It was considered peasant food in Italy, just like broccoli rabe and polenta which all of a sudden became trendy. (Imagine our surprise when we saw food network chefs showcasing the same food that my folks ate because they were poor!) Anyway one of the best pizzas I had was in Italy: arugula, truffle and asiago cheese. And it wasn't an upscale place, just a regular lunchtime pizzeria.
