If you have to have just one of these traits, competence should always trump charisma. That is what a mature society would choose, anyway. Unfortunately opinion in our country is shaped by a bunch of media folks who are the epitome of arrested development and are emotionally stuck in high school, sucking up to the bullies and kool kids and dissing the serious students.
