Sen. Schumer Tells Pres. Obama to Use Military Base For Terror Trial

It was surprising to see Senator Schumer buck the President on his choice of location on the upcoming trial of terrorist Khalid Sheik Mohammad. Per the Daily News, Sen. Chuck Schumer had a tip for the White House Monday – go find a nice cow town to host the 9/11 terror trials.

“My advice to the President is, with a great deal of respect, take New York off your radar screen,” the state’s senior senator told reporters. “Find another location.”

The most logical place,” added Schumer, “is in some isolated military base that is completely far away from population centers and is self-contained.”

Schumer’s middle-of-nowhere, military-base criteria came a day after President Obama said he has “not ruled out” bringing the trial to Manhattan Federal Court – despite a taxpayer tab estimated at $1 billion over five years.

We had thought after the shocking election of Scott Brown to Teddy Kennedy’s old senate seat, the message would have been clear. For a strong Obama ally like Schumer to come out publically and say ‘do not have the trials here’ – since the President seems to be hemming and hawing on this – it is a pretty good sign that Schumer is feeling the heat in his own state.

Part of the backlash that swept Scott Brown into office involved his campaigning on stopping the terror trials from being held in NY. The exhorbitant costs and added security the trials would involve, and who would pick up the tab, were issues upsetting to many. Politico is reporting that other Democrats in Congress likewise are running away from civilian terror trials, which are polling as very unpopular with the American people.

I advocated for Martha Coakley in the MA election and believe she was irrevocably hurt by saying these trials should be held in New York, and by allying herself with the Obama Administration, allowing him to campaign for her. This seemed to indicate she would be the crucial 60th vote on Mr. Obama’s unfortunate health care bill, however reluctantly. This sealed her fate. But as we have seen, the herd mentality in both parties makes it near impossible to stand alone. Trapped between being ostracized by her own party or going along to get along, she became the casualty, and scapegoat, of the message voters wanted to send the President and Congress. Once again, a qualified woman was cast aside.

Sen. Schumer is reading the tea leaves, both from MA’s special election and his own poll numbers, which are on the decline. Understandably, he is looking to protect his own behind with voters. This is yet another situation where President Obama’s policies are becoming toxic to his fellow Democrats.

Insiders said Monday that while the White House has all but taken the city off the table, it doesn’t want to make it official until a new site is lined up. The search is believed to extend well into the hinterlands, such as Colorado and Kansas.

AG Holder proposed 4 different location in upstate NY to Schumer, all of which he nixed.

“I told him that I was familiar with all four and none of them would work,” Schumer told the Daily News.

Further,

Some believe the whole debate may be moot, given GOP legislation that would block the feds from spending any money to try Guantanamo detainees in civilian courts. It is picking up support from Democrats too, such as Staten Island Rep. Mike McMahon.

“The political landscape has changed dramatically on this,” said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.).

Mayor Bloomberg tried to stay out of the fray yesterday but reiterated that if the trial comes to New York, “We expect the federal government to pay for it.”

It appeared the Administration was going to backtrack on the NY trial location, yet by Senator Schumer choosing to draw a line in the sand publically, he indicates the American people’s voices are being heard. It will be curious to see who else is listening and what, if any, effect this will have on future policy.

What say you?

Where in Kansas – in Leavenworth? Gosh he’s throwing the treasured  home of his grandparents under the bus now.I guess Sebelius doesn’t care about that but Moran , running  to take over Dennis Moore’s seat and Brownback running for governor will.

  • EllenD

Oh heck. There must be a civilian court somewhere in this huge country that this could be held and where people aren’t afraid. The Feds should pay for any extra security. How about Alaska?

  • Hokma

I read that Obama is playing out the string on this and waiting for Congress/Senate to make the move to not authorize financing for the trial security – which will force Obama to go back to Gitmo and a military tribunal. It appears to be a foregone conclusion.

  • lark

    Good Americans don’t change.

  • FLDemFem

How cool is that!!? Schumer reads NQ, and gets ideas from it!!! I suggested Leavenworth as a site for the trial on this blog a while ago..the supermax prison to be precise. They have the military base nearby for security, and the prison should be easy to secure, given it’s already a supermax. If it’s good enough for John Gotti to die in, it’s good enough to try a terrorist.

  • FLDemFem

So once again, Obama is farming out his work. What a lazy toad he is!!

I supported Ms. Coakley financially during the primary eventhough I lived 1,500 miles from her state.  Her stated positions during the primary indicated that she might be a person with enough integrity to stand alone, if necessary.  When the pressure was applied she capitulated.  If she had taken a stand, she would have won but even with a loss she could have held her head high.  Hopefully her loss with provide a example to other Dem. political hopefulls that the old base is looking for politicians with integrity, (good luck with that)

Ah, ChuckE, the Dems’ “kingmaker” and one of my two NY Senators.  He’s runnin’ scared he’ll lose his seat.  Here’s a thought: The White House/Holder should get together with Robert Redford and combine the trials with the next Sundance Festival.  Great photo ops for movie stars and terrorists and some well-deserved peace and security in lower Manhattan.  Everybody wins!!!!!! Ya gotta love deese guys!

  • arabella trefoil

Very interesting. Chuck Shumer is one of my Senators. He is one of the oiliest sons of bitches I’ve ever encountered. His statement could mean a lot of things, especially since he’s such a weasel.

Taking it on face value, I’d say he’s scared. More tea leaves to interpret. But anything Shumer says has to be scrutinized with a lot of care. The guy is a a publicity hog for one thing. I don’t think you can cut a ribbon at a new senior citizens’ center or dedicicate a new parking garage in New York State without Chuck showing up and shoving everyone aside to grin at the cameras.

Old joke: Where’s the most dangerous place to be?

Between Chuck Shumer and a television camera.

It’s true. I’ve seen him in action myself.

This is so ludicrous.  Schumer acting patriotic?  What a stunner.  I wonder how much he has funneled off to Israel.   It is amazing how consistently phony the upper echelon of the D party is.  Think about it:  Obama, Axelrod, Dean, Reid, Pelousi, Schumer, Murtha…oh, that’s right, that mother is dead, but you get the picture.  How slimey can one get or appear?
    Schumerk, you’re the winner.

Unfortunately, yes. I’ve had dealings with him. If you ever attend a function with him, don’t shake his hand. It’s like clutching a fresh donut. You’ll leave grease spots on everything you touch until you’ve washed your hands with Dawn detergent.

  • Peggy Sue

This is a killing issue for the Dems in general and Obama specifically.  Personally, I have no problem with civilian trials per se but thought the NYC venue was unbelievably insensitive to New Yorkers.  And the price?  Good grief.  There’s no way you can justify that price tag.

My only hangup with civilian trials and the idea of showcasing the American justice system was the ludicrous public statements made by the AG and the President–they both said the evidence was overwhelming, that the whole crew would be found guilty and executed.

    And that showcases what exactly?

As for Schumer, he’s obviously feeling the public pressure on the issue and watching his approval polls slip.  But we’re suppose to be a country of Laws.  Not ruled by public opinion. Otherwise, we’d just pull out a rope and lynch the suckers. If the original idea was a sound one then Schumer and all the other Dems should be fighting like mad to debate the merits.

Instead, we have weasels who only respond to election data.  And btw, the Republicans are no better IMO.

    Depressing.

I agree. Las Vegas would be a fine site for the trial.  The forum should be the Treasure Island Casino.   This would be one way to recoup some of the business which has been lost thanks to  Obama’s foolish suggestion that people not blow their money on Las Vegas.

Arabella, next time you might try washing with Dawn detergent before you shake his hand. It was found to be a very good shark repellent by the Navy when they tested various things to see what they should put in liferafts and on life vests to repel sharks. Dawn worked best of all the things they tested.

I think that the Schumer “attack” is not much different than the Harry Reid blast against the pres on Las Viagra.  It helps the pres if letting them attack him helps them stay elected.  I wonder if and suppose that they both cleared their words with the WH before going out against the pres.

I think the idea that holding a trial in NYC is somehow a danger to anyone is without substance and a GOP misguided alarm.  It’s been done before.  Clinton and GW both tried extremists in the U.S. and there were no problems.  Why all the hand wringing? Criminals should be treated like criminals, nothing more and nothing less.  Our judicial system is what separates us from extremists and we should not shy away from our democratic principles that everyone must have his/her day in court.  The U.S. can handle any criminal, from Al Capone to Manson to extremists from other part of the world.

  • WestVirginia304

The hand ringing, Guest, is caused by the people who were involved in those decistions, under those administrations, to go civil who now say it was a bad idea that should not be repeated.  We should sort of decide to learn from the past and not repeat mistakes.

  • Anonymous

Did GW not try a terrorist that was part of 9/11 and everything was fine?  The Clinton administration also tried terrorists.  To believe that the U.S. does not have the warewithall to try these people in NYC is the same as saying that they are a powerful mutant from the X Men movie.  They are not.  It will be good for all Americans to see these terrorists in chains and powerless before a judge and a jury.

  • WestVirginia304

Good points Guest.  But the point I was tring to make was that we are still under attack and the people who put those other guys in jail are not sure they did the right thing.  They now think we should have held them and extracted information that would have prevented 09/11.  I am sorry if you and Larry Johnson do not agree with this thinking.  It is my thinking.  But I am not very smart.  I am just a voter type person.

I didn’t know that Dawn was a shark repellent. The things you learn on NQ.

Acually, I think they changed the formulation of Dawn liquid detergent. We don’t have an automatic dishwasher, so I wash a lot of dishes. I found Dawn liquid detergent to live up to its promise as a grease cutter. Very effective at getting grease off dishes and glasses, and you didn’t have to use much. I did notice that Dawn also pulled all the natural oils out of my hands. Maybe some customers did not like this feature.

I think the newer version of Dawn is less effective at cutting grease (much less, in my opinion) but it doesn’t irritate my hands. Plus you have to use more detergent.

I hope the Navy has addressed this issue, if I am correct about the reformulation. I would hate to see them use a less effective shark repellent. Navy SEALS totally rock!

All countries are merging into one world government. That is the desire of the U.S. due to its very difficult financial situation. The decision about where and how to try AKM has to do with how those types of trials affect the merging of the legal systems from all parts of the world.

We just have to accept that the best thing for us is to be like them. All in one and one in all – a three mosketeers world. That among many other reasons is why our Dept of State has this beautiful demonstration project of Haitian soverneignty going on for its own citizens in Haiti.

I think that has been the plan from day one, but Obama promised to close Gitmo. So he, in his usual passive agressive way, is hoping that the Congress will force him to use Gitmo.

Let me look at my copy of The Obama Playbook.

Yep. His obots are probably writing their talking points on the backs of their hands right now.

Big Obama: I was forced by the uncooperative Congress to hold the trial at Gitmo. New York wouldn’t cooperate.

That was before terrorists (oh, excuse me “extremists) hijacked two planes, drove them into the twin towers and incerated a couple of thousand people.

We New Yorkers are a little sensitive about that. We breathed in the ashes of dead for days. I lost 5 co-workers in the 9/11 attack, two of whom were on one of the planes.

Al Capone did not have associates who were capable of this kind of retaliation. Neither did Manson. Thousands of innocent people will be killed by terrosists, I mean extremists, who might decide to blow up buildings, or release toxic agents in New York City as a political statement. Also New York has a sizeable Jewish population, making it a “target rich” environment for terrorists who hate Jews.

    Where do you live, Guest?

The Musketeers were a group of swordsmen sworn to loyalty to the French king and who were among his personal guards. The Three Musketeers is a fictional tale by Dumas about three musketeers (Athos, Porthos, and Aramis) and their friend, D’Artagnan (who wants to be a musketeer), and how they thwart the French Cardinal and governmental minister Richelieu (sp.?) who is trying to kill or depose the king and take over France.

    Historical Context

Many of the characters who appear in The Three Musketeers were real people who are depicted reasonably accurately in the novel, although Dumas did take fictional liberties with their actions. King Louis XIII, Anne of Austria, and Cardinal Richelieu were important people during the period of the novel. Monsieur de Treville and Richelieu really were enemies — in fact, in 1642, de Treville was part of a plot to assassinate the Cardinal. Richelieu did have his own personal company of guards, who did have a fierce rivalry with the Musketeers. The tension between France and England, and the ensuing war in which the Guards and Musketeers fought, was an historical fact.

The tension between France and England, and the ensuing war in which the Guards and Musketeers fought, was an historical fact.

All countries are merging into one world government. That is the desire of the U.S. due to its worldwide financial system. The decision about where and how to try AKM has to do with how those types of trials affect the merging of the legal systems from all parts of the world. These people are also called International terrorist. New York City is preferrable because New York City is an international destination.

We just have to accept that the best thing for us is to be like them. All in one and one in all – a three mosketeers world. That among many other reasons is why our Dept of State has this beautiful demonstration project of Haitian soverneignty going on for its own citizens in Haiti. In Haiti you have an example of THE THREE MOSKETEER WORLD. You have the merging of the Haitian, U.S. and U.N. governments.

Wasn’t a lot of money spent to build a courtroom at Gitmo for just this purpose? Now they want to spend millions to hold the trials in civilian courts so that we can show the world the wonder of our system. Does the world give a crap?

And what kind of a system is it when the President, the Attorney General and the President’s douchebag mouthpiece, aka Gibbs, have all ready said that KSM will be executed? Will that impress the members of the world community that won’t even  extradite criminals because we have the death penalty and they don’t?

Only politicians could screw things up like this.

I am a firm believer that you do what you think is right because you think it’s right, not too impress someone else with what you are doing. But then I’m not a politician so I don’t approach everything as how it will “play”.

Chuck You Schumer’s Wall Street Donors Look For Revenge.
    http://www.newser.com/story/80495/schumers-wall-street-donors-look-for-revenge.html

Chuck Schumer is making enemies in high places among “his wealthiest and most powerful constituents,” writes Chris Smith. These Wall Street honchos have long poured money into Schumer’s campaign coffers, but now they think he’s not doing enough to protect them from regulation attempts. “Chuck says, ‘I’ve been there to help you,’ ” says one lobbyist. “Well, that’s when we were playing stickball. Now we’re in a cage match and he’s hiding under his desk.” Schumer’s critics—who accuse him of adopting a populist streak so he can be the next majority leader—have no hope of unseating him, but they can take revenge in other ways, writes Smith in New York magazine. That includes getting behind Harold Ford Jr. as he tries to oust Kirsten Gillibrand—”a virtual ward of Schumer’s”—from her Senate seat. “A lot of what’s fueling the Ford thing is Chuck’s donors, who are furious at him,” says a political consultant. “They feel he’s walked away from them.”

    Rahm Emanuel dropped the Chalupa?

Yeah, I for got about that.  That was when I was pulling for HRC.  He is such a snake.

Would you ever trust Sshumer with you wallet?

The Marine and the Professor…stop me if you’ve already heard it. Ha!
A former marine enrolled in a college course. One day his atheist professor stood in front of the class and said “okay God, if you exist, strike me down in the next 15 minutes.”
After 10 minutes, the professor looked up and said “I’m waiting.”
With that the marine walked to the front and cold-cocked the professor. He returned to his seat while the class sat in stunned silence.
The professor staggered to his feet and said “young man, why did you do that?”
The marine replied “God was busy, he sent me instead!”

But then Bambi couldn’t attend.  I want him where the danger is.

  • margaret

Sure, but only when he isn’t speaking at all!

  • oowawa

Yeah!  All the beautiful tall topless ladies with high headgear, Wayne Newton, plenty of alcohol, and the star attraction–KSM! KSM! KSM! on gigantic blinking neon billboards.  The outcome of the trial?  No matter!  What happens in Vegas
    stays in Vegas!

  • Docelder

Say that is true… O.K. then the decision of Bin Laden to attack NYC as the worlds financial center… was he really attacking that “financial center” or acting as a catalyst for this larger plan? Would he even know the difference? If not, this would make him a “useful idiot”. This plays into the 911 truthers claims. Wow, this has the makings of a great conspiracy novel turned into a miniseries. 8-)

  • Docelder

Think if he found a wallet he would call the owner? That is the question.

  • Sassy

Oops, I forgot. That one is for all the corpsemen!

  • Sassy

    Let’s do a real extravaganza!
Bring out those Greek Pillars, put BO and Holder in purple togas, and record the trial in Latin.

  • oowawa

“The Marine and the Professor…stop me if you’ve already heard it”

Hey Sassy–I tried to stop you, but I just kept right on reading! :-D

  • oowawa

Oh–I like it!  And don’t forget the white powdered wigs to give the proceedings some gravitas.  Thee One will look smashing in a white wig!

  • Sassy

    Hey oowawa!
Remember when giving the one-digit salute to write “up yours” on the BACK of your hand!
See we are getting very intellectual here!

  • Onofre’s arm

I’m sure he’d call the owner.

“Hey, I think I’ve got your wallet. You’ve got a nice looking family. I can tell you’re a generous person since you’ve indicated you’re an organ donor. Oh ya, your Visa card is due to expire next month, perhaps you could ask for a higher than $5,000 credit limit when you renew it; you may need to since I maxed it out. Also there was only $83 cash, if you want your wallet back, I’m sure you can come up with more cash, say $200, to compensate me for the trouble, and to demonstrate your gratitude that I didn’t give it to Reid.”

  • oowawa

Ah, I remember the 3 Mouseketeers well–Cubby, Darlene, and especially Annette–we all loved her so much.  Hmmmm . . . I seem to have forgotten how this connects to the topic . . .

  • oowawa

Just when I was making real headway in telling the difference between shit and Shinola, you spring this stunner on me.  “Up Yours” on the BACK of your hand!”  No wonder I was feeling so insulted all the time . . .

  • buzzlatte

NO, everyone liked Annette’s sweater.   8-)

  • bamaLV

why doesnt obama hold the trials in his hometown of mombassa?

  • bamaLV

and robert gibbs had the audacity to make fun of sarah palin for writing cliff notes on her hand. at least when she speaks off the cuff you dont hear “uhmm, er,,umm,.. uhh…umm” she doesnt need someone elses hand up her backside telling her what to say.

  • stodghie

  • stodghie

lord, please don’t those braying jacks select fort hood.

  • stodghie

west virginia, it won’t help! too little too late

  • bamaLV

anyone else think obama and holder saying the terrorists will be found guilty and executed was on purpose?   any decent lawyer could  call for a mistrial saying  the defendants were prejudged (by the president no less) and could not possibly get a fair trial.  since holder’s old law firm  was very involved in defending terrorists, seems  to me ,  he is still doing it, except hes now going thru the backdoor to accomplish it.

  • stodghie

guest, you bring to mind another quote from shakespere, “what fools these mortals be.”

  • stodghie

hmmi notice our trolls travel in pairs or in threes now. need protection from those ole meanies at nq huh.

  • bamaLV

we dont want no damn terrorists here in las vegas. let them hold the trials in D.C. or better yet in chicago. it can make up for them not getting the olympics.

  • stodghie

i also wonder if the israeli lobby will continue to support schummer.

There are a lot of theories out there why the AG and the President made the statements they made in public.  One of them rocks on the closing of Gitmo, the firm promise made during the campaign that turned into a misguided idea after the President took office.  If you can blame the Republicans for twisting your arm and making civilian trials look dangerous then it’s back to Guantanomo for military tribunals. The Dems had no other choice and the pressure from the Left is mitigated.  Or so the reasoning goes.

There are enough theories out there to make your head spin.  Who knows what’s true?  The public statements were either stupid [and I don't believe either of these men are dumb]. Or purposeful.

    To someone. Or some agenda.

  • bamaLV

maybe he can create some jobs by opening  a bobblehead doll factory featuring obama and meechele bobblehead dolls. each one comes with a free plastic helicopter (courtesy of the WH gift shop), a free dvd of all obamas hysterical (oops i mean historical) speeches, and a complete wardrobe of mechelles sofa fabric clothing (along with a few plastic belts) .  and if you order immediately, they will include a chris mathews, and keith olberman bobblehead doll(complete with spittle)and their pants down around their ankles.    but wait…if you order 2 or more bobblehead dolls, they will throw in a bobblehead jack-in the botox nancy pelosi (with eyes that try to blink 100 times a minute but never quite succeeds) and a  bobblehead dead man walking harry reid (complete with horns and tail).   all this can be yours for a mere 1.3 trillion dollars (plus tax and shipping).  who said americans arent industrious and innovative?

  • dead lark

It does. The funny thing is the U.S. is actually fighting to get the one world order spoken by Bush 1 many years ahead of Laden and Laden is only a disconnected element. Circumstances in the U.S. have changed dramatically and the world as such may not be interested anymore in a one world order a la U.S. would want to. More of a one world order with the U.S. maybe as an observer.

Things are changing for us fast. Now Toyota needs to recall 9 million automobiles because the U.S. drivers can’t deal with ‘so called’ defects. Everything is a crisis in our country. The world may decide to continue without us.
