Obama “Helps” Reid?

Uh, not exactly. Unless Obama is trying to “help” Senate Majority Leader Reid retire. Many of us would be happy as clams with that, including me. Even when I still had on my rose-colored yellow dog Democratic glasses, I was very disappointed in Reid’s “leadership.” That disappointment has only continued to grow for me.

Apparently, I am not the only one, though I’m not the one who counts. It’s the people who are actually in Reid’s state who matter at this juncture. And they are none too happy with him, either. Even a visit from The One didn’t help him, as this article makes clear, POLL: Obama’s Visit Just Bounced Off Reid; Poll shows senator gained little ground in re-election battle. Oh, dear. That doesn’t bode well, does it? Short answer, no. But here’s the particulars of just how much Obama did not help the senator in his re-election bid:

During his whirlwind visit to Las Vegas two weeks ago, President Barack Obama mentioned U.S. Sen. Harry Reid by name four dozen times, gave him a big hug and talked him up as if he was a long-lost brother.

In remarks that could not have been more laudatory, Obama repeatedly characterized the veteran Democratic leader as a man “made of very strong stuff” who was making the right decisions for the state back in the nation’s capital.

But as Reid faces an uphill path to win re-election to a fifth Senate term, Obama’s enthusiastic endorsement does not appear to have improved the Senate majority leader’s standing among constituents, according to a new poll conducted for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Reid got no bounce from Obama’s visit on Feb. 19, when the president spoke highly of him at Green Valley High School and to business leaders at CityCenter, polling indicates.

A larger percentage of voters surveyed (17 percent) said they would be less likely to vote for Reid following the president’s visit than said they would be more likely to vote for him (7 percent). Seventy-five percent said Obama’s visit would have no effect on how they vote.

“Reid was not helped, and Obama was not any more popular than he was before he came to the state,” said Brad Coker, managing director at Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

Obama’s day in Vegas “did not have much of an effect” on Reid’s re-election chances, notably among independent voters, Coker said.

Um, I’m no mathematician, but I do know basic arithmetic: 17 – 7 = 10, so I’m not real sure about Coker’s conclusion that Obama’s visit “did not have much of an effect” on Reid’s behalf. Seems like Obama’s visit had QUITE the effect, just not the kind Reid probably wanted. Coker continued:

“The independents hold the key to Reid, and for Reid there is no sign he is cracking them right now,” he said.

Mason-Dixon researchers spoke over the phone with 625 likely Nevada voters Monday through Wednesday. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A political boost for Reid “wasn’t the intent of the visit,” Reid spokesman Jon Summers said.

“Senator Reid asked the president to come to Nevada to talk about jobs and the economy and in doing so they announced $100 million to help Nevadans who are underwater in their homes,” Summers said.

Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me. That’s how they are going to try and spin this? They really do think we are a bunch of A-Number 1 Morons, don’t they? Naturally, this had absolutely zip to do with Reid’s continued struggles for re-election, not the best impression when the Senate Majority Leader is having such a hard time in his own state. Surely he can count on a little, tiny bounce by a visit from the president – not:

Regarding Obama’s trip to Las Vegas, the president’s lack of a coattail for Reid to ride says as much about Nevadans’ ambivalence toward the president as it does about the senator, Coker said.

Reid’s renewed focus on passing jobs bills in the Senate continues to be overshadowed in voters’ minds by Obama’s association with the unpopular health care debate, including Thursday’s daylong health summit , Coker said.

“It would be to Obama and Reid’s advantage to get off health care and get onto issues that people want them to work on,” Coker said.

But Obama’s visit served several purposes for Reid that wouldn’t turn up in the numbers, at least not yet, said Mark Peplowski, a political science professor at the College of Southern Nevada.

One purpose is to excite the Democratic base, particularly younger voters and occasional voters who went with Obama in 2008 and need to be re-energized.

“Pollsters now are talking with inveterate voters, but Obama and Reid are looking long term at nine months from now because Harry doesn’t have a primary race,” Peplowski said.

David Damore, a UNLV professor, said Reid’s ability to put Obama together with business leaders, as he did at a fundraiser and again at CityCenter, shows power brokers, including Republican ones, that he can continue to deliver.

That might cement Reid’s support later among people who otherwise might think about contributing to his Republican challenger, Damore said. (Contact Stephens Media Bureau Chief Steve Tetreault at stetreault@reviewjournal.com or 202-783-1760.)

Yeah, let’s just see how well that goes over with the regular people of Nevada. They seem to see both Obama and Reid pretty clearly, don’t they? Make sure to check out the comments of the people who live in that state following the article. Hooey, there are some folks who are hot under the collar.

Or maybe they just don’t cotton to Obama telling people NOT to come to Las Vegas – TWICE, and waste their money there.

Ahem. Well, we keep trying to tell them that JOBS are what we need, something that will pay the mortgage, pay our utility bills, enable us to buy gas to get to work, and cash to put food on the table. We do not need some half-baked plan full of pork that will constitute 1/6th of the economy and will cost us money we don’t have – personally, and as a country, just to massage the ego of “That One.”

Yep, those coattails of Obama’s ain’t what they used to be – oh, wait, they never were (just ask Cornine, Deeds, or Coakley). Maybe it’s time for our “representatives” in Washington to figure out they are there to do OUR work, not whatever the man in the White House demands. If not, more of them, hopefully like Reid, will be looking for jobs themselves.

Hey, here’s a thought – Obama, why don’t you go “help” Pelosi, too? Since she seems to have forgotten her job description, to represent the people and not you, Obama, she could do with retirement. Rather, WE could do with her retirement.

Who else should Obama go “help”?

  • Hokma

Of course the fact that Obama single-handidly stifled tourism in Vegas – twice – does not help Reid either.

Interestingly, in Pennsylvania, where Obama has not gone, the latest Quinnipeac poll placed Specter ahead of his democratic primary opponent as well as the potential GOP candidate. Not long ago Specter was behind both.

That can all change if Obama comes for a visit to ole Arlen.

  • Tricia

Dang, Joe Sestak is one of the few Democrats I really still like!

  • mortuus lark

    Hillary “Helps” Bachelet?

  • CarlaforHillary

Once again, Obama visting Nevada on Reid’s behalf just shows the arrongance and blindness of this administration of what is really going on.  Or…maybe Obama really does want Reid to lose, since Reid has done nothing to help Obama.  Obama can’t blame his woes on Reid, but if a republican wins, Obama can blame them, and say it is them ruining the country, his hands are tied, etc..I don’t think it will work but the Obama administration is in a desperate situtation. They don’t realize that they should just leave the Reid situation alone, and stop trying to manipulate what is going to happen because Obama will muck it up no matter what happens.  I totally agree with everything you said RRA. Thanks for the post.

  • EllenD

Of course the fact that Obama single-handidly stifled tourism in Vegas – twice – does not help Reid either.

Yeah. Nevadans don’t appreciate you attacking Las Vegas with tourism  being the #1 industry and so many out of work.

I guess Obama thought people would be scattering rose petals. He’s lucky they didn’t throw rotten tomatoes at him.

  • Docelder

Obama never helps anybody but Obama. So, Obama must need to be seen “helping”. At any rate, the thrill is gone. Obama is a net negative. If he were really “The One” we would have seen it by now. Reid would do better if he and Obama staged a fight. Makes for better Kabuki.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Indeed, the Las Vegas mayor said abt Obama, “he’s not welcome in my city.”  Wooey, that’s quite a statement!

I guess not everyone is blinded by Obama’s bright light…

Obama should “help” Nancy Pelosi. I want to see her campaigning with Obama in her district. Nancy should say “My first priority is to pass Obama’s health care legislation, I am willing to lose the election. Yes, that’s what I said. I am willing for my rival to win. We must all make big sacrifices for the country. My sacrifice is losing.”

Obama: “Ideas are bigger than people. Passing my health care bill is more important that any one local race. If some folks lose their seats this fall, we are willing to accept the losses, even deadly losses even painful losses. Even Nancy’s loss.”

I want to hear Obama use the words “lose” and “lost” more times in a speach that the words “I” “me” and “my.”

Yep, hit the husting and whip up the crowd by promising to lose elections. That’s the help I want Obama to give.

  • arabella trefoil

She can be fat, and she can drink and smoke too. She just has to be able to sing.

We need BO’s help in NY, too.

I missed the reporting on this visit, but I was wondering:  Did Barack speak in his apparently optional “Negro dialect” when praising Reid during the visit?  Perhaps that, some tap dancing, and sharing a few smokes and beers at the local tavern with the boys who cling to guns and religion might have boosted Reid’s ratings a bit.

    Or maybe not.

My money is on “Bill Clinton” being sent out to campaign for the morons.

I think they’re talking about “stepping down” from his Chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee.

  • Diana L. C.

    RRRA,

I am having trouble getting past the first quoted line from the Journal article at the beginning of your post:

“During his whirlwind visit to Las Vegas two weeks ago, President Barack Obama mentioned U.S. Sen. Harry Reid by name four dozen times, gave him a big hug and talked him up as if he was a long-lost brother.”

Now which branch of his family would Reid fit into:  the Dunham branch, the Soetoro branch, the Obama branch, the Frank Marshall Davis branch?  Is there something ELSE we should know about Obama among all the other things we STILL don’t know?

    Just asking……..

Good luck charming the younger crowd and cementing those “younger voters and occasional voters” while ignoring us “inveterate” voters.  My prediction is that the American Idol thing won’t work for those younger voters.  They’ll think he “so yesterday” as they go flocking to the new idol, or–more likely–ignore politics again as they often did when it will no longer be something “in” and “cool” to do.

And this quotation from the article also left me scratching my head:

“David Damore, a UNLV professor, said Reid’s ability to put Obama together with business leaders, as he did at a fund raiser and again at CityCenter, shows power brokers, including Republican ones, that he can continue to deliver.”

Ummm……I thought Obama was a liberal Democrat who was for the little people and not those nasty “power brokers” and especially not those evil “Republican ones.”

Obama never fails to confuse me.

  • candymarl

I want Obama to campaign non-stop for Reid and every other weasel Democrat up for re-election. I have their best interests at heart.  I’m rooting for them!

    Trust me. Really. 8-)

  • Diana L. C.

I forgot to add, that I trust if O could talk to me personally, he would “make this perfectly clear.”

    BREAKING NEWS

Charlie Rangel giving up powerful Ways and Means chairmanshipBy Adam Fogle | March 2nd, 2010 | 0 comments Share
<img src=”http://www.palmettoscoop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/charlierangel.jpg” title=”charlierangel” alt=”charlierangel”/>House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charlie Rangel on Capitol Hill in Washington, Feb. 25, 2010 (AP Photo)

EMBATTLED DEMOCRAT CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE ETHICS VIOLATIONS

Embattled Congressional Democrat Charlie Rangel says he will step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee amid a torrent of corruption charges.

NBC News reported that Rangel, 79, could “give up the gavel” as soon as Tuesday night, just days after an ethics panel accused him of accepting Caribbean trips from a corporation in violation of House rules.

The Caribbean trip was the least of 20-term Democrat’s ethics problems. More than two years worth of investigations have yielded allegations that Rangel improperly used his office to raise money for a college center named after him and that he failed to pay taxes on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic, among other things.

Republicans had been in the process of rolling out a resolution to remove Rangel as chairman — something that could have gained enough Democrat support to pass.

The final blow came Tuesday afternoon when Congressman Artur Davis, a member of both the Ways and Means Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus, called on Rangel to “do the right thing and step aside.” Davis was the 14th Democrat to publicly call for Rangel’s resignation.

Michigan Democratic Rep. Sander Levin is expected to temporarily take over the committee, which has jurisdiction over all taxation, tariffs and other revenue-raising measures, until a permanent replacement is chosen.

Yes – I am sure it does.  I saw earlier today that Des were starting to ally themselves with Reps in asking Rangle to step down from the chairmanship.  The ethics thing is a bit of a sticky wicket.

And that isn’t even TOUCHING any of his tax fraud issues.

Not even. Just say that if this story gets legs that the flow of aid to Haiti will necessarily stop until it is resolved. The people would be home the next day. So, it either isn’t a priority, or the administration likes the idea of Christian “do gooders” sitting in a third world jail.

In the comments for an article regarding Obama’s visit to Las Vegas, one of the commentors referred to him as “the Obamatross”. Timmy, I am not a super-smart person, but here’s what I think.

The corporate interests want control of our lives. No, I am not paranoid. If an interest group controls your money (your financial situation) they control you. Sounds a bit right-wing, eh?

Now, let’s all get really confused. The left wing of the Democratic Party wants to control our lives. Because top down management is so much more efficient. Because the people are too stupid to know what is good for them. The best thing to do is control our lives … for our own good. Sounds a bit left wing. Hmm.

The media control our money. They have to keep the people watching TV and buying the crap they advertise. The advertisers must be kept happy. That means you’ll hear whatever crap the media wants you to hear. That means that your local 5:00 or 6:00 news will be all happy talk and sensational stories (blonde eaten by shark!)
It’s all to distract you. Sounds a bit 1984-ish. Oh.

The Democrats, seething after years of being shit on by Bush, wanted to be able to do the same thing. They wanted to control the message. They wanted victory at any price. The old reptilian brain kicks in. Sounds like blind revenge rage. Ugh.

Obama wants our money. Hell, he wants anybody’s money. All he wants to do is line his pockets and live a lush life. Power is nice too. To have power he needs to pay off the pyramid scam he and his Chicago cromies set up. You know how pyramid scams are. You need a perpetual flow of money to keep them going. Obama is hollow at heart. He has no core and no values. He’d pimp out his mother for a few bucks. Sounds like a narcissist. Ouch.

You have the perfect storm of people who want money and power and (for a variety of reasons) want to control YOU. And thus we have Obama. There is no accurate label for Obama. He’s more of a fascist maybe? Doesn’t matter what you call him. I have a nose, and I can tell you he and his posse stink.

Obama is bad for you, bad for me, and bad for America.

I think that the reason that many people typical of society as a whole and the reason that society as a whole has made the issue of Silsby and Charisa unjustified incarceration a non-issue is that these are two unmarried women – one middle age good Christian woman, divorced and the other is an overweight woman – and both were dealing in rescuing Black children from a Black country, in a Black country.

In other words the YUK factor is

    Middle age women

Divorced (that is without a husband or male family to claim them)

    Fat

    Christian

    Black children

    Black country

Sum of all the above: Yuk and/or racism and bigotry.

I agree – there were a lot of things the Reps did we didn’t want/like, but some of them, like the Patriot Act, the DEMS have renewed, except with no sunsets.

And the Reps didn’t have a supermajority like the Dems had, which means some Dems voted for them, too.

Bottom line, they seem to be flip sides of the same coin, but some are worse than others, and should be handed their hats.  IMHO, that is.

  • Murray

    Question:

How does the DNC work in Nevada?  Will Reid get the “Pledged Delegates” vote, no matter the vote of the people?

  • Murray

Remeber the Patriot Act?  What rock have you been under?  Obama just last week signed a ONE-YEAR EXTENSION OF THE PATRIOT ACT.

  • bayareavoter

Murray, No, I have not been under a rock. I’m completely aware that they just renewed the Patriot Act and that Obama has continued signing statements that he decried during the campaign, etc.

I’m just saying that just because the Dems are a totally despicable disappointment does not mean the Rs are any better…and in many regards they are worse.

i actually think McCain with a Dem House and Senate might have been ideal.

I agree with RRRAmy and Ralph Nader that they are all the same! But throwing Botox Nancy out (I’d love to see that) to have her replaced with Boehner is equally repulsive!

(is he a mind reader now?) who does he think put obama in office?  even if 100% of AA’s voted for him, thats only 14% of the population. that means 39% were white or others. this racist crap has to stop. if we were all racists, hillary clinton would now be president instead of this POS.       unless thats the plan. incite the AA’s so they will come out and vote again but i think many of them have also wised up to this snake oil salesmen. just take a look at all the folks lined up at the unemployment offices..85% AA.s.so what exactly has he done for them?
