Let me offer a defense of Dan Rather. Anybody can say something that turns out to be racially insensitive. Clearly, if Rather were focusing on the fact that he was talking about a black man, the comment would have been offensive per se. But maybe Dan, like a lot of us, are not obsessed by the fact that OUR president is black. It could well have just been another one of those down home “Ratherisms” that he could have just as easily used on Nancy Pelosi.

I’m more offended by the moderator who Rather appeared with, Chris Mathews, who sees Obama as a black president rather than as a president. Between Rather and Mathews, I’ll take Rather.
