Senators Blocked Clinton, But Will They Block Obama?

Recently, I had a post aboutSenator Robert C. Byrd, and his opposition to using Reconciliation to pass Healthcare. Recently, he seemed to leave the door open for Reconciliation in a recent letter to the Charleston (WVA) Daily Mail. Given his inimitable performance on the Senate Floor during Bill Clinton’s presidency on this very issue, his seeming change is rather staggering. Or is that hypocritical?? Decide for yourself:

Those are some forceful words from Senator Byrd. What did President Clinton do? Clinton acknowledged that Senator Byrd was correct, and dropped the pursuit of Reconciliation to pass Healthcare back in the 1990′s.

My question to Senator Byrd is: why are you not arguing in the exact same manner against Obama’s desire to use this process for the EXACT SAME REASON???

How about Senator Kent Conrad, D-North Dakota on Reconciliation? This was Senator Conrad on the floor of the Senate recalling the debate over President Clinton’s consideration of Reconciliation for Healthcare:

And now? Oh, you know what’s coming. Now Conrad has signaled he is willing to use this budgetary procedure to pass Obama’s exceedingly flawed (and not even completely written) Healthcare bill.

I might add, he was that upset in 2001 over a $138 Billion dollar initiative? Ahahahahah, isn’t that just precious? Especially considering Obama and the Democrats racked up $223 Billion in DEBT just this past month alone!! In just ONE month they have spent more $90 billion MORE than Bill Clinton’s Healthcare Initiative. Wow, Senator Conrad, way to really stick to your budgetary guns there.

No wonder Democrats are referred to as the “Tax and Spend” Party. I used to take offense at that, but they are earning that label in a big way now.

And then, there is Obama as a US Senator on how we cannot use Reconciliation. Yo knew it was coming. Oh, make sure to check out the date when he is talking about getting a bill to his desk to his sign:

Did you catch that? September of 2007 he was already claiming the presidency. Talk about hubris. Now? You know that, too. Obama wants to use it. In the following video from the Blair Street Summit, Obama’s essentially saying we are a bunch of dumbasses who don’t care how Congress does its job:

Here’s a newsflash for you, Obama – we DO pay attention to how things get done in Washington, or not, and how much you all are listening to us or not. You most definitely are NOT.

Just to digress for a moment, I just wonder why in the world this man wanted this position so much that he was willing to lie, cheat and steal to get it when he CLEARLY has such little regard for the people whom he is SUPPOSED to be serving. Must be those perks he mentioned in the first video because it isn’t any respect he has for us.

And talk about HYPOCRISY. Byrd, Conrad, and Obama are poster boys for it in their flipflop about Reconciliation to shove this extremely expensive, pork laden, Big Pharma gifting, increased insurance premium making, Medicare curring healthcare bill down our throats.

Obama wants to “get ‘er done” before he leaves next week, another false deadline.

To that end, the House Democrats have locked themselves away in their “transparent” attempt to come to some agreement about this bill so they can try and meet Obama’s time frame.

So glad they are spending SO Much time on this when 462,000 people have filed for unemployment this WEEK. The numbers were expected to be lower.

In my own state, the front page news included that unemployment in South Carolina has hit another record high:

Employers cut 27,700 positions throughout the month, including seasonal jobs in tourism and retail, as the jobless rate reached 12.6 percent, the state Employment Security Commission said Wednesday.

South Carolina’s unemployed population — a total of 273,455 residents — is the biggest on record.

Compare that number with the data recorded several years ago and a grim picture emerges. That figure, for example, never topped 100,000 people in 2000. Throughout 2005, the number averaged 140,000.

“It gives us a sense of how many jobs the economy needs to create in order

to put a majority of people back to work,” said economist Don Schunk of Coastal Carolina University. “More so than the unemployment rate, (that number) tells us how far we have to go before we return to some sense of normalcy.”

The preliminary January rate eclipsed the previous record set in December. That number originally came in at 12.6 percent, but it was revised downward to 12.4 percent last week, based on more current information.

So, yes, Congress, by all means, cancel all of your other meetings like you did today (Thursday), continue to focus all of your time and energy on a healthcare bill we have been telling you for months we do not want, while we continue to lose our jobs, our homes, and our faith in you.

November cannot come soon enough.

  • Robert

    Enough of this crap already!

    We need jobs!

I can barely afford to feed my family now!  But wait it’s OK because Obama is going to give me free healthcare…………What a crock

  • candymarl

I’m talking to a friend in another state. I can tell you he has a large family and knows a lot of people. These are African Americans and they are not happy with Obama and many of them voted for him.

It isn’t just right wing racists that are upset as the  MSM would have you believe.

  • AC

He’s overcompensating from when he was The Grand Dragon

  • warehouse553

I completely agree. He has tremendous white guilt from his days as a klansman!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

No indeed it isn’t just “right wing racists,” candymarl.  I am guessing that description doesn’t match many of us here!  :)

Interesting that they are AA’s and not happy, but I imagine many in that community are not pleased…

And Robert, you are so right, we need jobs.  Bear in mind that here in SC, we just got a huge contract with Boeing, but that cannot possibly make up for the 27,000 lost in Jan.  Wow.

  • Yttik

I don’t mean to be impolite, but has anybody seen Sen Byrd lately??? I’m starting to wonder if congress isn’t playing Weekend at Bernies and keeping him tucked in a closet somewhere.

  • Diana L. C.

This is really the first time I have worried that something serious may occur if Congress an/or the WH went against the obvious will of the majority.  Before, I would be angry about something passing, but then would sit back and deal with it, as did most Americans,  I want it NOT to pass because I don’t want more trouble in our country–which I am afraid will occur.  I do not believe this time people will be willing to simply sit back and deal with it.

candymarl, I come from a large extended Caucasian family.  We’ve always been pretty divided in terms of political opinion.  We’ve had to just agree not to talk politics.  This is the first time ever that we don’t have to agree not to talk politics because we all agree–the people in Washington, this administration, and Wall Street are out of their minds.

I noticed a political cartoon this morning with Obama mocking people for not wanting health care reform, as insurance costs are rising.  It just struck me this way:  they are rising so drastically now so that the insurance companies that made deals with the WH can make their money now before everything else happens: if the bill (whatever it turns out to be) passes or if it doesn’t.  This is the best time to raise rates for them.

And, RRRA, our Denver paper also had a front-page story about how unemployment rates were higher than expected.

candymarl, I live part time in Berkeley, CA. Need I say more! However, there are definate signs that the worm is turning. For a few months now anti-Obama signage is popping up and staying up. It started with that joker poster. I bought Going Rogue at a black owned bookstore in Berkeley. There were many stores here that wouldn’t even carry it. Last week I read an editorial in a local black newspaper. The writer was basically telling readers the Tea Party people have genuine grievances and not to dismiss them out of hand at right-wing racists.

I wonder if it’s guilt or whether he’s just going with the flow now that we’re into political correctness (sometimes, that is).

    Interesting article.  Hmmm.

But then again, why worry abt those pesky rules now, getfitnow?  Obama already said that we mo-rons out here don’t care how laws get made, just as long as they get them passed.

Isn’t it ironic that this alleged Constitutional Scholar continues to demonstrate such callous disregard for that document?

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Hey, Diana – well, according to Dr. Angell, the ins. companies, the ones Obama is demonizing in his speeches, stand to come out pretty darn well with this bill as written.  You know, the bill Nancy thinks we should e willing to get passed BEFORE we know what’s in it.

Sorry to hear abt your area, too – if only we had a body that actually had time to do something abt it…Ahem.

  • oowawa

Well, I hope they’re keeping him tuned up and ready for action:

Byrd has been President pro tempore of the United States Senate since 2007,[6] a position that puts him third in the line of presidential succession, behind Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

You are right about the anti-Obama/anti-Govt stuff popping up. There was a huge sign that I drove by every day promoting the Recovery Act road work being done.

The morning after the State of the Union speech in big white spray painted writing were the words “Stop Spending” … this is in an upper middle class white neighborhood but where many progressive liberals live as evident by their “health reform now” yard signs.

The next day, the Recovery Act sign was down and has not to be seen again. I thought to myself … hhmm, how much did that sign cost to manufacture and not is thrown in a pile of heap to of course be recycled into a new sign using proper carbon considerations.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

If there was, I think they would have tried with Strom Thurmond, don’t you?  :)

Who votes for people like Ms. Conyers?

Is there any wonder now why there are so many issues in Detroit and/or Michigan?

    …”Baby”

  • Juliezzz

Nope!  Not gona happen.  The senate parliamentarian said that Obama has to sign the origianal version of the healthcare bill into law before they can act on reconciliation.  In other words, the people opposed to the bill would have vote for it and then cross their fingers that it would be changed after it was already law.  There just isn’t that much faith and trust between the various branches.

    Dead in the water!

  • candymarl

Good thing too, because being broken and unenemployed, you’ll need that free insurance to treat your familys malnutrition. But wait!!! I quote Obama from his 896th speech on health care yesterday:

“All new insurance plans would be required to provide free preventive care to their customers.”

Therefore, can’t malnutrition be avoided by eating a nutritious well balanced and calorie sufficient diet? If so, then Obama has just promised you the your insurance company will give you FREE FOOD if you take his preventive care remark at face value.

This is just a personal story about my life right now.  I have always been one to repair an appliance if it broke down right away, order the part and my husband would replace it, if he could or have someone come in and do it, but if that same part went out more than once in a six month period, then that was it, I would replace the appliance it with a new one.  Well, since the whole HC debate has been on the table, I have fixed my Refrig 3 times to keep it running until I know what’s to come.  I have the money, the credit to go buy whatever I want, but I refuse to spend any money right now bc the future is so unknown, so I am babying my Refrig until I know what is really going to happen to the USA.  I have never replaced the same part three times in a refrig or anything else, it’s an older refrig bc I tend to keep things until they fall apart bc I don’t waste my savings and I refuse to use my credit cards bc of the uncertain interest variables they keep remaining us of in the mailings they are sending to us.  So, if I have to,  I will start buying ice instead of fixing that ice maker one more time until I know no HC and NO MORE MANCHILDNCHIEF!  I am afraid to buy a Refrig, how sad is that, I just can’t seem to take the money out of savings for something that is not an emergency while these liars sit in nice chairs, nice cars, nice homes and determine my future.  My pissed off point of the day!  BTW, Byrd is dealing with facing death and guilt over his old opinions of other races, so he is seeing the grave and trying to make it to heaven by doing whatever manchildnchief wants.  If he knew his bible, he would know all he had to do was ask for forgiveness and mean it,  instead of leaving this country wounded beyond repair like my damn refrig.  Sorry that my post is so long, but I am really mad today!!!

Amy, how would you suggest that the White House produce jobs? Through a massive stimulus bill, perhaps? But everyone here hated the first stimulus bill, didn’t you?

As for health care: how can you with a straight face oppose this bill and call yourself a progressive, especially after the CBO scoring of the Senate version confirmed that it can be expected to REDUCE the federal deficit by more than $100 billion?

Your position here is sheer madness. If we don’t get this bill, we will lose any chance to reform health care for years to come. We cannot wait. In your heart you surely must know this.

SeriouslySickofObama, I loved your story.  I always used to fix things too.  In the “olden days” (say, 40 years ago), it was possible to repair things.  Parts were available.  Nowadays, more and more things are designed to throw away if anything goes wrong.  Some things cannot even be disassembled.  I was an electronics technician in the military and after, and was used to fixing stuff.  For a humbling experience: try to repair a computer printer.  You sound like a really good person, the “salt of the earth” as the expression goes.  But there you are, clinging to your old fridge and your bible and your decent ways.  What in the world has become of our country?

I can’t help thinking that, the health insurance bill was rushed through the first time because people supporting the legislation sensed the public wasn’t overly enthusiastic but was convinced, like pulling a bandaid off of a scab, the faster the deed was done, the sooner it would be forgotten.  They had no idea that public outrage would be so swift or so massive.  (Or, using this post as an example, so well informed.)  Now, the passage of a bill depends not on whether the people want it – we don’t – but on the cost/benefit analysis of factors such as, how will BO punish/reward me for my vote; and will my family and I survive financially without this job?

To beginwith this bill is the biggest corporate giveaway in history. No public option doe not allow anyone to buy insurance except through privately owned corporate insurance. As for drugs, Obama made his deal with BigPharma and not only cannot we import drugs, or see generics enter market sooner, the 80 billion over ten years he agreed to from pharma is chicken feed. Pharma makes over 77 billion  in profits ea year. The deal? No advertising against the Obamacare from industry if he strikes these deals. Which he did. The public option died a year ago by the president’s hand.

I am mandated [forced] to buy this scheme or get punished by a fine from IRS. Drug prices are already climbing and insurance premiums are soaring. Considering the abysmal manner Obama’s mortgage resolution has failed, can you imagine how this will be administered?

Aside from many other sickly items the worst of all is the Stupak which allows the Catholic Council Of Bishops to dictate women’s reproductive futures. Catholic Stupak wants all women already limited from receiving abortions in federally funded prigrams by the Hyde amendment, to go several steps further. It seals the fate of any woman from even paying for an abortion with her own money.

This hit on the weakest among us andchipping away at RoevWade is unsupportable and an abomination. Women fought for decades for equal protection, self determination, and reproductive freedom.

So now the Democrats want women to suck it up as “we MUST get something, anything through”.  This vile cave in for political cover and for an enormously flawed bill that transfers all american’s wealth to corporations is immoral and unconscionable.

The lack of leadership shown by the democrats and the WHouse has been staggering.  Obama has wasted a year trying to get bi-partisanship on this bill?  This is not governing,

This is do or die time for those who aspire to move the United States closer to the European system of quasi-socialist goverment.  If those who now hold the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives can just get this plan signed into law, they believe that permanent change towards government centralization and dependency and redistribution of wealth  will have occured and that it won’t really matter what happens after that.  The will of the people is really irrelvant to those dedicated to make this change, who see this as an historic juncture for which they are responsible.

Thus the ridiculous statements of Democratic leaders, and the deparate, fundamentally dishonest, and ironically-named ”Slaughter Solution.”  What difference do any of these relatively small betrayals make when you;re on the brink of bringing down America, a country and an ideal that you believe to be universally despised throughout the world and that you, yourself, personally despise?

If you would like a glimpse of the future of America if the current crowd in power gets its way, take a look at Argentina in the last century.  Around 1900, it had an economic structure that was almost comparable to our own at that time.  Now, after 100 plus years of “social progress” and forced wealth redistirbution administered by both the left and the right, it is an economic and political basket case.

It could happen here, if we let it happen.

Byrd likes reconcilliation NOW. When Clinton’s healthcare was trying to pass through reconcilliation he and Conrad were dead set against reconcilliation. N0w Conrad wants it too.

We have a worse than awful congress. We have a dysfunctional and tone deaf WHouse that has dealt backroom and dealt us out of decent affordable public option healthcare.  Oamacare is corporatecare.

  • Onofre’s arm

I got mine too. In 1980 I was an enumerator for the census. When I interviewed people, I first informed them that I was required by law to write down WHATEVER I was told, even if I knew better. It was in my small college town so many of my friends ended up being interviewed by me. I told my friend Joe about the policy so he claimed he was an Eskimo (I knew he wasn’t) and I had to write that down. Word got out. So anytime I ended up interviewing a friend, they claimed they were an Eskimo. There’s a small southern college town with a remarkably high percentage of Eskimos, I wonder if the town qualifies for government subsidized mukluks and snow mobiles.

Seriously sick, it’s a census, not an expose, you don’t need to give out any information you feel uncomfortable about. Of course, I’m just an Eskimo, what the hell do I know……………..snow?

Just saw a Dagwood Bumstead cartoon in which the daughter was telling her brother it couldn’t be true.  Then the brother took her in to talk with Dagwood, and he confirmed what the brother said:  There used to be a time when people repaired their televisions.

I try to have things repaired too because I just hate all the town dumps and the waste.

Who is speaking for Byrd? The Obamamedia are of course not demanding to know his whereabouts, his capacities.

Cindy I just went back up to read posts that have been added and want to know what the song was that you, oowawa, onefre’s arm, etc were laughing over around 7:20 on.

  • Docelder

My letter made me think… how do they know what breed we are really? What if I put 5% Eskimo? or 5% Black? How would they know? And if I did put that, would that mean when my kids get college age they could get in with lower test scores? It’s worth a try, so long as you can’t get sent to federal prison for it. Then again… say we all said we were 5% Eskimo and 5% Black. How could it be disproven? DNA tests? If a few million were organized and everybody did it, how could they possibly check everybody? Then someone would have to prove intent to lie. Who is to say we don’t all have 5% Eskimo of 5% Black in us somewhere. Who is to say? The whole race game could be cloward-piven’ed in a single swoop. Just a random thought.

    Here’s a clue:

Cut taxes on payroll – people have money to purchase something, the store stays open, employees get paid, products move, wholesalers and manufacturers get paid – they have money to spend – restaurants, dry cleaners stay open, sales tax income increases, the states and counties and cities can pay their employees, keep schools and government running, ………………, more people have jobs and can pay more in taxes to reduce the deficit.

Now, where I used the word “payroll” above, insert the words income, corporations, small business ………

You are an idiot and boring!

As the National Journal’s CongressDaily and Washington Examiner have reported, Slaughter has cooked up a way to avoid a House floor vote on the Senate’s version of the overhaul. How? By passing a rule declaring the Senate bill already passed in the House. Apparently, all the Rules Committee chairwoman is waiting for is a budgetary scoring from the Congressional Budget Office.

This morning on Morning Joe, Lawrence O’Donnell pretty much eviscerated the argument that Democrats can even pass this thing AT ALL–and he said that the Democrat’s “group-think” argument that they have to pass SOMETHING, and that it will be GOOD for Demcrats once they pass a health care bill [and people know what's in it!] when 53% of the public OPPOSE this bill.

O’Donnell, who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to legislative and parliamentary procedure, says the Dems can’t do what they’re saying they’re going to do, which is “amend” a bill which hasn’t been signed into law–which is what Dems are promising to do for liberal dems, if they vote yes.

The interesting thing to me is that there is a majority of Senators pledging to vote yes if there’s a public option in the billl–and the White House is IGNORING THAT, to push a bill without one.

    A WTF moment indeed!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Hey, Teak – I did see that Slaughter is looking at doing that.  Wow – we have a real stand up bunch of people, don’t we??

Here’s the thing – Byrd had it RIGHT in the video above.  This is a SERIOUS issue, and it demands true debate, serious consideration, not being shoved through benefitting this or that state or corp.  WHY can we not do that?

Because it is ALL abt Obama’s ego, damn the country, apparently…

    Thanks Just Me!

  • Noogan

You know, when you have to break the rules to pass a health care bill that 53% of the public oppose, you’re DESPERATE in the extreme. This is where Obama has led the Democratic Party; just exactly the path down which G.W. Bush led the GOP during the past decade.

BOTH parties, gave up all pretense of ethics, of principles, and of accountability to the American people, to follow these stupid men, and engaged in the worst hypocrisies, corruption and criminality imaginable. Meet the new “boss” same as the old “boss.”

Sickening. Slaughter’s shameful and unethical behavior shows how low the Democrats have sunk in this pathetic debacle, which should never have been the focus in the first place, when the economy is in such danger.

I couldn’t possibly be more disgusted by this administration.

Morning Bell: Obamacare at Any Cost

Yesterday was particularly tough for the President’s plan. First, the White House underwhelmed the Democratic Caucus [6] in a presentation of the new (still unwritten) reconciliation bill. Then, the Senate Parliamentarian killed the Democrats favored procedural path for passage [7] by signaling he would rule that President Obama must sign the original Senate bill into law before the Senate could act on the President’s new reconciliation package. Finally, the Associated Press [8] reported that House leaders have abandoned all hope of finding language to satisfy Rep. Bart Stupak’s (D-MI) concerns that the Senate bill funds abortion. By the end of the day, the leftist firedoglake site had dropped its count [9] of committed House Democrats for passage to 189 (Speaker Pelosi needs 216 for passage).

Politico reports that despite the Parliamentarian’s initial verbal ruling, they will press on with their Slaughter Rule plan to pass the Senate bill without voting on it. NRO’s Yuval Levin quips [16]: “Democratic leaders should be asking themselves just how they have gotten to the point that their strategy is to amend a law that doesn’t exist yet by passing a bill without voting on it.”

Well, we had a telephon, but since we lived in the country, we had a party line, with about four families on the line.  One old geezer wanted naps all the time, so he took his phone off the hook so it wouldn’t ring, and then we all lost our telephone connection.

I am sure all the high school kids might commit suicide today if they had to endure that and if they couldn’t constantly be texting and calling (with separate ringtones for each person on their list).

  • sowsear

    sowsear,
I’m not very knowledgeable on this but it’s been my understanding that the Vice Presidents’ only duty in the Senate is to break a tie.

  • sowsear

When I was little, all lines were party lines. The number would be 123J or 123W to distinguish which family you wanted to talk to. All calls were put through by the operator at a main switchboard. Often the operator and others on the line would listen in; often there would be a line hogger on for hours just chit-chatting away. Sometimes you would have to interrupt and say you had an emergency. Sometimes they would let you on. You always knew when school was out, because the kids would get on and ask non-sensical questions and then hang up.
Party lines could be 4, 8, or maybe even 16 in the country. In 1982 when wefirst had a line at our camp, it was 8 parties. We never could get on that d…line.

  • bayareavoter

RRRAmy–great post. Many great comments, too.

i called my senators and rep yesterday to say I was a lifelong Dem who was against this bill. Probably a rarity from here in Marin County.

  • sowsear

When I was a kid, almost all lines were party lines, mostly 4. Only the rich could afford a private line. Numbers would be 123J , 123W, etc. depending on which family it belonged to. All calls went through an operator at the main switchboard, and she and others on your line would often listen in. Some lines had a hogger who would talk for hours so you couldn’t reach the operator. Sometimes you would have to break into the conversation and say you had an emergency.
You always knew when school was out because the kids would call and ask non-sensical questions and then hang up.
When we first had a phone at our camp in 1982, it was an 8 party line and we could never get on that d… line. If you wanted a private line, you had to pay to have the line strung from the main road to your camp. Could be quite a distance.
Now we have a different problem. We have a Verizon cell phone, which is in the same area code for both our house and our camp. At camp we are often charged roaming charges because Verizon has their tower in Canada. We now call them and they take the charges off, but at first they gave us and others a hard time and insisted that we pay. If you live anywhere near Lake Ontario or the Cannadian border, you have trouble.

One Christmas we had three things go wrong. Luckily our kids were home and could help us replace the toilet, at least.
