“The Democrats’ Glass Ceiling”

Looks like William Kristol is trying to get something started. This brief piece in the Weekly Standard notes that despite getting 18 million votes, Hillary isn’t accorded any respect (yeah, we know).
So Hillary Clinton gets about 18 million votes in 2008, and isn’t even considered for–she apparently isn’t even given the courtesy of being consulted–the vice presidential pick. Joe Biden manages to persuade a few thousand (if that) Iowans to support him. And Barack Obama selects Biden? Normally, if the VP pick came from that year’s presidential field, it’s the runner-up (Kerry-Edwards in 2004, Reagan-Bush in 1980, Stevenson-Kefauver in 1956). (Lyndon Johnson in 1960 hadn’t entered the primaries.) And Biden wasn’t even the third most successful candidate this year (hi, John Edwards!), or fourth (Bill Richardson, I suppose), or fifth (Dennis Kucinich!).

Kristol notes that Hillary and Biden have roughly the same experience in terms of foreign policy. He also notes that Hillary is a stronger populist. He thinks either could perform the required attack-dog duties.
Then Kristol has a suggestion:
A modest suggestion to my justifiably outraged Democratic friends: Hillary’s name should be placed in nomination not for the presidency (Obama won that more or less fair and square)–but for the vice presidency. It would be an interesting roll call vote.
The title of the piece? “The Democrats’ Glass Ceiling.”
Yeah, I know it’s William Kristol, and I know he’s taking potshots at the Democrats. But the party’s brought that on itself.
Obama’s donors aren’t doing much to help Clinton retire her debt either, contrary to his promise (surprise). According to the LA Times, Clinton’s supporters have donated millions to Obama while his donors have given her a paltry 400K.
If Democratic Party unity can be measured in dollars, then the party has a ways to go.
Barack Obama’s financial backers have given Hillary Rodham Clinton about $430,000 in the two months since he exhorted them to help pay off her campaign debt, which includes nearly $11 million in unpaid bills to vendors and consultants.
Clinton donors, however, have given Obama more than $3 million in the same period, a Times review of their campaign finance reports shows.
You know, I keep waiting on Obama to come through on ANYTHING. Usually, you don’t find out if a promise is worthless until AFTER the election. Obama is sparing us the breathless anticipation, I guess.
