OffShore Drilling? Bring It On!

I caught this commentary earlier, and thought it seemed like perfect Friday night fare. And it is so in keeping with the “shrug of the shoulder” mentality of Obama’s supporters whenever he does a major flip or flop, and he has done plenty. And he did another big one just this week on Offshore Drilling. So, when I saw this piece, Rick Horowitz: Obama Says “Offshore It!” We’re All For It!, I just had to share it with you.

But first, remember this?

Oh, yeah. See if any of this sounds familiar from the mouths of Obamaphiles:

Have we mentioned lately how much we like offshore drilling? Lots more than you might have remembered — that’s how much all of us here at All Things Obama like offshore drilling. If we haven’t managed to work our positive feelings about offshore drilling into the conversation over the past few months (or even the past few years), we hope you’ll forgive us. It must have just slipped our mind, with all the excitement about Barack Obama running for the White House, and then actually winning the White House. There were so many other exciting Barack Obama topics to talk about, we just never got around to sharing our feelings about this one particular issue.

These are our feelings: We think it’s a swell idea. To be perfectly honest about it, if you’d asked us about offshore drilling a couple of years ago — or even a couple of days ago — we probably wouldn’t have been able to put our positive feelings into words. At least, not into words that most people would have heard as truly positive. The words that most likely would have stood out — to most people, anyway — would have been the words about oil spills, or the hazards to precious wildlife, or the risk of polluting beautiful beaches, or even the threat of permanent environmental damage. And we probably would have said a few words that sounded particularly churlish about the kind of energy policy you get when you put two former energy execs — those would have been George Bush and Dick Cheney, of course — in charge of things. Of course Bush and Cheney want to drill, we might have said. They always want to drill. Anyway, that’s how most people would have interpreted our comments a couple of years ago — or even a couple of days ago. Which is why we’re taking this opportunity to clarify our thinking. To let you know that deep down inside, we’re really OK with offshore drilling — even expanded offshore drilling — and that we’ve been really OK with it since at least Wednesday afternoon, which just happens to be when we heard that Barack Obama was OK with it.

Ohmygosh – how much does this sound JUST like the Obots with whom we have to contend on a daily basis?? They way they can twist themselves up trying to defend Obama’s most recent “change” would lead one to believe they work in a pretzel factory, or should, if they were still hiring, that is. There’s more twisting to be done:

Were we caught off guard when the president made his announcement? Maybe a little bit. Some of us here at All Things Obama had somehow been under the impression that the president had a somewhat different view of the matter, and that his view on expanded offshore drilling could best be summed up as follows: No way. No how. Accordingly, some of us had adopted a quite similar view, and we were only too happy to point out the many dangers, and the minimal benefits, that expanded offshore drilling would produce.

But once the president clarified his thinking — that is, once the president announced on Wednesday that he wanted to go ahead with expanded offshore drilling — we were only too happy to point out what a wonderful thing this would be. We’re also happy to point out how carefully nuanced and deeply reasoned the president’s decision was — not to mention how judicious it was, and even how politically savvy it was. All in all, in fact, we have no hesitation in saying that Barack Obama made exactly the right decision, for exactly the right reasons, and that we’re totally on board — unless, of course, he should decide to change his mind, in which case that will be exactly the right decision, for exactly the right reasons. We await further instructions (emphasis mine). (Rick Horowitz is a syndicated columnist. You can write to him at rickhoro@execpc.com)

“We await further instructions.” Ahahahahaha!! You KNOW that’s true! They all come here saying the exact same thing on a given topic, and no matter how many facts are laid out in black and white, they refuse to acknowledge it. They can’t, you see, because their instructions are VERY clear. No matter how convoluted an Obama position is, they MUST defend it no matter what.

Oh, dear – this cracked me up. I just had to share it with you. Talk about this, or whatever else is on your minds!

  • Freedom Fighter

That clip was from 2 years ago. In 2 years things have changed. We now have better technology to find and drill for oil, it may not take the 10 years as was originally thought. Also, with oil prices rising again, I think most Americans will welcome the relief.

  • Mark

This is the same moron who accused us of driving on flat tires and if we were only smart enough to inflate our tires then we would not need to drill for oil.  This jerk has been inflating himself with hot air.

Get this clown off the stage, he is an embarrassment to the entire country.

  • HARP

Right you are FF. Obama had a better plan. The contortions you Bots put yourselves into, trying to explain this clown are really quite amusing. Please keep it up.

  • ces

Nah, he just needs more gas for the big ol’ bus he keeps throwin’ his friends under…

  • Diana L. C.

    RRRA,

You know when you’re hooked up to the matrix all that has to happen to change all the units’ minds is to send it streaming through the wires.  There is no individual thinking there in the Obamanation Matrix.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

    ROTFLMAO – good one, Diana!!

  • Armymom

All I can say is hahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhaha

I still have my “Obama tire gauge”, for souvenir purposes ya know. lol

I think we should drill everywhere.  North, South, East, West, drill now! See when gas prices went up under GWB and his minions drillling was offered as a solution it was evil, evil I tell you!

Now, it’s a good idea to lower prices for suffering Americans.

Also, war is good, protests are bad, and all that happen to disagree are racists.

    Welcome to 1984.

  • Cindy

Rev. Amy—  Thanks for the latest in the Obama soap opera. I call it “He Said/He Said” since he has declared war on himself, apparently.
Well, I’ll tell ya. Hubby and I like think we’re environmentalists, but the way my beloved West Texas is ‘going green” is so depressing to me.
Those godawful 21st century new-fangled windmills have ruined the vistas out there…. a real mood-alternator.
Call me old-fashioned, but give me an old-fangled pumpjack any day over those gigantic ugly things. One of my grandfathers had a sheep ranch out there 50 years ago. That’s where and when I learned to love West Texas…..the vistas, the sunsets, the ranchers, the open sky…..you could look for miles and see nothin but mesas and tumbleweed and other western amenities. It was so therapeutic!
I guess I wouldn’t mind the windmills quite as much if I thought that the Kennedys, the Obamas, the John Kerrys,  etc, would like having one of those huge steel monsters in their backyards to look at everyday! Ha! Oh, and by the way…they are not even made in USA!! Don’t ya just love it?? >:o

  • Cindy

Excuse me…”mood alternator“???? What the hell is that? I meant to say mood-altering!!! I have no “spell check” and/ or “brain check” as you can tell

  • Cindy

    yaaaaahooooo!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

I dunno, Cindy, I kinda liked your new term!  :)

Windmills are something we are looking into in our state, too.  You know, those coastal winds are mighty good for generating electricity (and I think they will be futher out at sea).

Anyway, you are right abt the rich and famous not wanting to look at them.

  • Docelder

FF, it never was going to take 10 years to get at the oil. Nanzi said it would, but that is preposterous. Wells take a few months to drill an individual well and then the well either produces or is capped off. Exploration takes time, but a lot of exploration has already been done. They know where the oil is. Maybe 10 years to develop a whole field, but not to get production. Every barrel we don’t import is going to help.

  • ~~JustMe~~

“We were only too happy to point out what a wonderful thing this would be”

Well, you know this fit in real well at Wednesday night party night back at the house!

To lighten the mood no less on Friday night :)

The oil supplies throughout the United States is very well mapped out and documented.  They explored for oil around the Great Salt Lake in the 1920′s…

  • Buzzlatte

The oil supplies are very well documented throughout the United States. Sometimes it’s the cost to get it out of the ground that prevents an oil field from being opened up ie: around the Great Salt Lake.

  • Buzzlatte

Oh do share where you got your knowledge of the leaps in technology that have radically changed the oil drilling and exploration industry, FF. The media seems to have missed it.

  • Buzzlatte

And FF is a shining example of the bots from the Obamanation Matrix!

  • Freedom Fighter

You have to do the designs and have it get past the regulatory committees and also community review boards. There will possibily be lawsuits from concerned citizens before any ground can be broken. All of that gets factored in, and you will probably get oil in about 10 years.

  • jwrjr

In a rather odd sort of way – “In 2 years things have changed.”, FF is right.  Instead of believing Obama’s promises, the people here are no longer seeing them for the lies that they were and are.  And more than a few who do not visit here are experiencing the same enlightenment.

  • jwrjr

The problem is that, according to what I read in the local newspaper, drilling will lower gas prices only a few cents/gallon.

  • Cindy

Rev. Amy— Oh absolutely, I can see y’all’s advantage to having them out a bit and catching those coastal winds.
But the biggest drawback for many here is that tourism in West Texas depends heavily on aesthetics. And that has been ruined in so many areas. It’s not that there are one or two wind turbines here and there.. No, there may be 20 or more lined up on one mesa, and 20 or so on the next mesa, and those suckers are about 200 to 300 feet tall and noisy.  But out in the ocean? That would be perfect for them, in my opinion.
Thanks for the discussion tonight, Rev Amy!

  • jwrjr

Sorry – my mistake.  People are seeing Ozero’s promises for the lies that they were and are.

  • sybilll

FFS, we all know Obama embracing drilling for oil is a ruse, and that even a hint of exploration will not occur before 2012, the way he has it framed.  I just wonder if you ever tire of getting your talking points scripted to suit the day’s happenings, or if you ever have an original thought?
And, the reply to FFS, in lieu of FF is intentional.  No apologies this time.  FFS is an acronym that applies, IMO.

  • jwrjr

We watch Fox News because we think for ourselves and don’t let Gibbs/Axelrove/Obama tell us what to think.  Try it sometime.

  • devilish
  • lorac

Yes, I remember Galt.  He did come back, but just for a short while.  I don’t know where he went!

  • sybilll

FFS, so now you are concerned about Hillary?   Shockingly, I find your concern for Hillary slightly less than admirable.

I still have my “Obama Energy Policy” guage also.

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

Who’s the bigger moron Obama or the idiots that fall for his bullshit?

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

Obama’s new policy “opens” exploration and drilling in areas that were already approved, and where the federal government already sold leases. But the policy closes exploration and drilling in areas where oil is known to exist and would be less costly to extract, such as Alaska.

“Had the administration done nothing, a lease plan was already set to take effect that would have opened vast expanses of the Outer Continental Shelf, drastically increasing our nation’s ability to tap into our domestic energy supply.”

“think for yourself, and follow Hillary Clinton’s lead.”

What? How exactly is following somones lead thinking for ones self?

I know, in obot land where everyone following O’butthole’s flips and flops is actually thinking for themself.

btw Hillary has said Fox is Fair and Balanced. If anything, she is following the peoples lead on Fox, not the other way around.

  • Touchet

OH!  But you forgot, their leader told them, that they would take at least a year to study the ways they can magically drill for oil and not destroy the natural habitat.

That will be the defense line they use.  He ALWAYS gives them a default clause.  Always.

  • ~~JustMe~~

No Cindy, never heard it by Art Garfunkel will need to check that out!

  • ~~JustMe~~

Hey FF, Greta is the one in the media who I give the most credit on Hillary, she gives her the time and space the SOS so rightly deserves. Wake up!!

  • CentralMass

I’m curious what location and wells?

  • CentralMass

The inflating the tire bit is a good idea whether we drill or not. Rasing Cafe milage standards is even bigger. Poorly inflated tire can rob up to 3.3% of your gas mileage..

Take ANWR. The U.S. Gelogical Survey put the aamount of technicall recoverable crude their at 7 billion barrels with a resonable confidence. Esimates are that it would take 20 to 25 years to extract all of it.

We curently use around 3.39 billion barrels of crude/year for our annual gasoline production. So if you could tap ANWR completely tomorrow, it would represent just over two years of the countries gasoline supply. In general we use around 7.3 billion barrels/year in the U.S. So ANWR is around 1 years supply for the country. If I recall the “big” find in th e Gulf is around the same amount.

So if average mileage was say 30 mi/gal.
If we increased gas mileage by 1 mile/gallon by keeping tires inflated and by keeping our cars well maintained , that would save 2.9 billion barrels over the 25 years. Up the increase to 3 miles to the gallon and it would save 7 billion barrels over ~21 years. Roughly  what we would pump out of ANWR over that time.

    .

  • Cindy

    JustMe–Here ’tis!

  • TermLimits

CM – I remember when Obama made the statement about inflating tires and the media immediately said it was a good thing.  I, of course, could not believe a word Obama or the media said so I looked it up.  While it does appear to be a good thing, aren’t those numbers based on the fact that all cars on the road would have to be under-inflated.  I believe the number I read was about one-quarter of the cars on the road actually have under-inflated tires or are not well-maintained.  Therefore, I believe the 25 year forecast is a bit off, right?

  • Buzzlatte

We get it.  FF is nonfunctional without some sort of a leader.

HT Instapundit: The Obama Administration’s new Energy Policy is a lot like Stage Magic.

I have to sort of admire the Obama administration, as their ability to misdirect, to get the media to look where they’re supposed to, is truly skillful.
    Watch the other hand.
    http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/obamas-stage-magic/?singlepage=true

  • CentralMass

The simple point of it all is that in two of the highly touted sites, the Gulf of Mexico and the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. the U.S, Gelogical Surevy  put the technically recoverable amount at each site at around 7 billion barrels each. Thats around 2 years of supply for the U.S.  Great, let’s go drill and get it. It will create some good jobs for two decades or so, but it is not going to solve our energy woes.

If we increased our vehicle gas mileage by 6 miles to the gallon tomorrow, in just over 2 decades that it will take to extract that 14 billion barrels contained in those two sites, we would have conserved 14 billion barrels.

So conservation, even with a dumb idea like tire pressure, pays big dividends.

The idea that the evil democrats are preventing the country from obtaining energy idependence is bull$hit.

  • CentralMass

It’s interesting that after having a republican contolled congress for a dozen  year and the presidency for 8, we saw nothing occur with the energy policy short of massive profits and price spikes at the pumps due to supply manipulation and speculation. No new drilling, now new nukes, zip.

I’m not a fan of the what is going down in Washington but Obama seems to be making some attempts at changing the status quo.

President approve $8.3 billion for two nuke plant in Georgia…
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/17/business/energy-environment/17nukes.html

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/31/AR2010033100024.html
What Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called “a new direction” in energy policy amounted to an offshore political gerrymander in which the administration barred drilling near states where it remains unpopular — California and New Jersey — and allowed it in places where it has significant support, such as Virginia and parts of Alaska and the Southeast.”

“A string of senators, including Alaska’s Mark Begich (D) and Lisa Murkowski (R), Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu (D), New Hampshire’s Judd Gregg (R), and Virginia Democrats Mark Warner and James Webb, praised the strategy. They have urged the administration to use a climate bill to help boost domestic energy production, through expansion of oil and gas drilling and nuclear power, and Begich and Gregg said Wednesday’s announcement made them more optimistic about a deal on the bill than they have been in months.”

“Noting that Obama has also offered recent support for more nuclear production, Gregg said such moves show that the administration is “genuinely trying to approach the energy production issue in a multifaceted way and a realistic way, rather than listening to people on their left.”
Landrieu concurred, saying that Obama is “sending as clear a signal as possible that he is willing to compromise in a way that will bring forth a great energy and climate bill, and he wants Republicans to be a part of it.”"

Ken Salazar seems to be on the cusp of forcing an approval of the proposed CapeWind offshore wind farm soon. It looks like ther are getting ready to purchase the required wind turbines for it.
