It's interesting that after having a republican contolled congress for a dozen year and the presidency for 8, we saw nothing occur with the energy policy short of massive profits and price spikes at the pumps due to supply manipulation and speculation. No new drilling, now new nukes, zip.

I'm not a fan of the what is going down in Washington but Obama seems to be making some attempts at changing the status quo.

President approve $8.3 billion for two nuke plant in Georgia...

What Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called "a new direction" in energy policy amounted to an offshore political gerrymander in which the administration barred drilling near states where it remains unpopular -- California and New Jersey -- and allowed it in places where it has significant support, such as Virginia and parts of Alaska and the Southeast."

"A string of senators, including Alaska's Mark Begich (D) and Lisa Murkowski (R), Louisiana's Mary Landrieu (D), New Hampshire's Judd Gregg (R), and Virginia Democrats Mark Warner and James Webb, praised the strategy. They have urged the administration to use a climate bill to help boost domestic energy production, through expansion of oil and gas drilling and nuclear power, and Begich and Gregg said Wednesday's announcement made them more optimistic about a deal on the bill than they have been in months."

"Noting that Obama has also offered recent support for more nuclear production, Gregg said such moves show that the administration is "genuinely trying to approach the energy production issue in a multifaceted way and a realistic way, rather than listening to people on their left."
Landrieu concurred, saying that Obama is "sending as clear a signal as possible that he is willing to compromise in a way that will bring forth a great energy and climate bill, and he wants Republicans to be a part of it.""

Ken Salazar seems to be on the cusp of forcing an approval of the proposed CapeWind offshore wind farm soon. It looks like ther are getting ready to purchase the required wind turbines for it.

The simple point of it all is that in two of the highly touted sites, the Gulf of Mexico and the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. the U.S, Gelogical Surevy put the technically recoverable amount at each site at around 7 billion barrels each. Thats around 2 years of supply for the U.S. Great, let's go drill and get it. It will create some good jobs for two decades or so, but it is not going to solve our energy woes.

If we increased our vehicle gas mileage by 6 miles to the gallon tomorrow, in just over 2 decades that it will take to extract that 14 billion barrels contained in those two sites, we would have conserved 14 billion barrels.

So conservation, even with a dumb idea like tire pressure, pays big dividends.

The idea that the evil democrats are preventing the country from obtaining energy idependence is bull$hit.

HT Instapundit: The Obama Administration's new Energy Policy is a lot like Stage Magic.

I have to sort of admire the Obama administration, as their ability to misdirect, to get the media to look where they’re supposed to, is truly skillful.
Watch the other hand.

CM - I remember when Obama made the statement about inflating tires and the media immediately said it was a good thing. I, of course, could not believe a word Obama or the media said so I looked it up. While it does appear to be a good thing, aren't those numbers based on the fact that all cars on the road would have to be under-inflated. I believe the number I read was about one-quarter of the cars on the road actually have under-inflated tires or are not well-maintained. Therefore, I believe the 25 year forecast is a bit off, right?

The inflating the tire bit is a good idea whether we drill or not. Rasing Cafe milage standards is even bigger. Poorly inflated tire can rob up to 3.3% of your gas mileage..

Take ANWR. The U.S. Gelogical Survey put the aamount of technicall recoverable crude their at 7 billion barrels with a resonable confidence. Esimates are that it would take 20 to 25 years to extract all of it.

We curently use around 3.39 billion barrels of crude/year for our annual gasoline production. So if you could tap ANWR completely tomorrow, it would represent just over two years of the countries gasoline supply. In general we use around 7.3 billion barrels/year in the U.S. So ANWR is around 1 years supply for the country. If I recall the "big" find in th e Gulf is around the same amount.

So if average mileage was say 30 mi/gal.
If we increased gas mileage by 1 mile/gallon by keeping tires inflated and by keeping our cars well maintained , that would save 2.9 billion barrels over the 25 years. Up the increase to 3 miles to the gallon and it would save 7 billion barrels over ~21 years. Roughly what we would pump out of ANWR over that time.

OH! But you forgot, their leader told them, that they would take at least a year to study the ways they can magically drill for oil and not destroy the natural habitat.

That will be the defense line they use. He ALWAYS gives them a default clause. Always.

"think for yourself, and follow Hillary Clinton's lead."

What? How exactly is following somones lead thinking for ones self?

I know, in obot land where everyone following O'butthole's flips and flops is actually thinking for themself.

btw Hillary has said Fox is Fair and Balanced. If anything, she is following the peoples lead on Fox, not the other way around.
