He Sold His Soul, And Now He’s Retiring

Yep, that’s right, after Bart Stupak and his gang of 11 wrangled over $3.5 Billion for their votes on Obamacare, Stupak has decided to end his career in Congress. You know, as if he hadn’t already done that with his vote, and selling out.

Here are the details:

Rep. Bart Stupak To Retire After Last-Second Deal On Healthcare

Rep. Bart Stupak is expected to announce his retirement Friday, weeks after his critical role in healthcare’s passage.

Stupak, the centrist Michigan Democrat who crafted a last-second deal on abortion that allowed President Barack Obama’s healthcare bill to pass the house and become law, will say during a press conference this morning that he won’t pursue reelection this fall.

Stupak has been wrestling with whether to retire for weeks, and the brutal healthcare fight certainly played a role in his decision.

Stupak told The Hill that fighting the healthcare bill had been “a living hell” a little more than a week before the bill was approved by the House.

Telephone lines to his office were jammed, and he and his wife received nasty calls at home.

“All the phones are unplugged at our house — tired of the obscene calls and threats. She won’t watch TV,” Stupak said during the interview. “People saying they’re going to spit on you and all this. That’s just not fun.”

Bear in mind, this was BEFORE he voted yes on the bill. Just to be clear. Then there was the “Yes” vote:

Things didn’t get easier for Stupak after he reached a deal with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democrats that allowed his group of anti-abortion rights centrist Democrats to vote for the healthcare bill.

After the bill was approved, Stupak gave the Democrats argument on the House floor against a GOP motion to kill the bill.

A Republican lawmaker, Rep. Randy Neugebauer (Texas), shouted “baby killer” as Stupak was speaking. Neugebauer later apologized and said he was referring to the bill and had said it was a baby killer.

Stupak, first elected in 1992, opposed the Senate-approved healthcare bill under consideration by the House because he believed it would not prevent federal funds from subsidizing insurance plans that would cover abortion services. He and a small bloc of fellow Democrats said they would not vote for the bill unless it was changed.

To win Stupak and his core group over, Obama issued an executive order that said the healthcare bill would not change existing law preventing federal funds from going to abortion services.

Several anti-abortion rights groups said that was not enough, and accused Stupak of selling out.

Abortion rights supporters were also irked by the executive order decision.

Well, it was a win for Obamacare, not for Americans, and these backroom deals continue to feed the anger about the bill’s passage. Stupak’s retiring won’t change that. Or maybe it’s because he knew he couldn’t win again:

Stupak had drawn challengers in this cycle, and fueled speculation that he might retire earlier this week by saying that he’d consult with his family before deciding to run for office again. Stupak’s wife had reported receiving death threats in the wake of his healthcare vote.

The congressman also suffered a personal tragedy in 2000 when his 17-year-old son killed himself the morning after his prom. Stupak subsequently held a hearing on Accutane, a prescription drug used by his son to treat acne that can have have adverse psychological effects, including suicide attempts. Restrictions on the use of the drug were tightened by the Federal Drug Administration in the wake of the hearing.

Stupake’s decision to retire adds another difficult seat to defend for Democrats already facing a tough election environment.

Stupak’s district includes much of northern Michigan, including the state’s Upper Peninsula, a rural area that is seen as Republican-leaning. Republicans will hope to pick up the seat, though The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reports that Charlevoix County Commissioner Connie Saltonstall is the leading Democrat to fill Stupak’s spot in the race.

Obama won 50 percent of the presidential vote in Stupak’s district in 2008, compared to 48 percent for GOP candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.).

That is a tragic story about his son, though I am not sure why his son’s death 10 years ago would affect his running for re-election NOW. Clearly, he has stood for re-election since that time. And again, while he received threats post-vote, he also received them pre-vote. Not that there is any justification for anyone being threatened, but it is important to keep the facts from being revised.

And maybe Stupak knew he didn’t have much of a chance at re-election not just because of his soul-selling for money vote, but because the DNC ain’t what it used to be. Indeed, according to Gallup, the “Democratic Party Image Drops To A New Low.” But, but, but, wait – didn’t Obama HAND PICK the new DNC chair?? Yet:

Americans’ favorable rating of the Democratic Party dropped to 41% in a late March USA Today/Gallup poll, the lowest point in the 18-year history of this measure. Favorable impressions of the Republican Party are now at 42%, thus closing the gap between the two parties’ images that has prevailed for the past four years.

Oh dear. I can’t wait to see how The One’s minions are going to try and scramble on THIS one. It isn’t Rasmussen (which has been pretty consistently correct, though that hasn’t stopped Obama’s supporters from trying to belittle it as “Conservative”). Nope – this is Gallup:

Gallup last measured party images in late August/early September of last year. At that point, the Democratic Party enjoyed an 11-point favorable image advantage over the Republican Party. Now, the favorable ratings of the two parties are essentially tied.

The images of the two major parties have particular significance in a midterm election year. For example, the favorable rating of the Democratic Party exceeded that of the Republican Party by 52% to 37% just prior to the 2006 midterm elections, in which the Democrats gained 31 House seats.

Americans’ current 41% favorable rating of the Democratic Party is five points lower than the party’s previous low, recorded twice in 2005.

By contrast, the Republican Party’s image reached its all-time low of 31% in December 1998 — just after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton. The Republicans’ current rating is improved from a pair of 34% ratings Gallup measured in late 2008 and in May 2009.

I hope Stupak is proud of his career, and his accomplishments. I don’t know how someone lives with themselves after making such a big deal out of a moral conviction, to then cave for earmarks, but that’s just me. I wish him and his family well.

All I can say is, 2010 is shaping up to be mighty interesting, isn’t it?

    Another great article Amy :-D

RRRA  Another great article….When I saw the news this money I was actually thinking many of the same things.

I have a feeling Stupak is very much through in Michigan politically ..His approval polls are lower than low….Many Michigan citizens are through with people who spout words that mean nothing..

I can’t help but wonder  what Democratic appointment probably lays ahead for him…..I imagine one that does not require Congressional approval…

He’d be smart not to accept any position from the Obama administration.  He will have to decide if he is the beginning of the end of the corruption or just another example of the Dem corruption.

Too bad he wasn’t wise enough to bend to the will of the people.

  • carol haka

    God Bless America!

They are dropping like the maggots they are after they completely gourged themselves on the carcus that was America.

To hell with all of them.

    >:o

  • confused American

I’m wondering if there has ever been a year when this many elected DC politicians retired or decided not to run…

Trying to think of the count but isn’t it over a dozen already and we still have about 6 months to the election…

  • HARP

Lets not forget what he said last year.

  • wodiej

    thanks for article RRA..

it’s going to be a “bloodbath” in November for the Democratic party if there are any left after they all slink back under their rocks before then.

  • Freedom Fighter

Wow, you’d rather deny women’s funding for abortion? Talk about hating women? What ever happened to “we the people”?

    [shakes head in disgust]

  • carol haka

This afternoon I was having chest pains and thought I was going to have to take some Xanax for stress.  This idiot is really upsetting me.  As you all know, I don’t have a job and have too much time on my hands.

Well, then it dawned on me that I was going to have to get an attorney to sue Obama for wrongful death!

That put a smile on my face, and now I feel fine.

    >:o :-D >:o

  • John/johnwsmart.com

another dandy of a post. the “people were so mean to me” excuse does not wash with me. These people are making choices that affect our lives. They chose the job. The government went out of its way to ignore and debase those who opposed this crock of a bill – hearing this man whine is pathetic. Get over it, Bart. You wanted the job. The job is about big tough issues and this is still a republic. Grow up. You sold your soul, Bart S. and running back home because of some crazy phone calls and some anger – REAL anger – won’t get you your soul back.

  • sowsear

I really did laugh outloud :-D

  • John/johnwsmart.com

    It’s 19 in congress.

  • sowsear

I’m old and retired and have too much time on my hands…I don’t have any Xanax to take….

  • carol haka

It might have to turn out to be a “class action” lawsuit!

    :-D

  • oowawa

Wow Carol–those itsy bitsy nitro tabs are literally a lifesaver–especially in this day and age . . .

  • oowawa

“we the people” became “we the sheeple” and started worshipping at the altar of Obama . . . (shakes head in disgust, spits)

  • Steve1

Exactly!  Barry Soetoro has some cushy, well-paid tax  dollar job lined up for Stupak!  I have no respect for that asshole!  The people have wised-up to these hypocrites!

  • sowsear

    My husband takes those…as a defense…

  • oowawa

5 And the devil led him into a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And he said to him: To you will I give all this power and the glory of them. Luke, chapter 4

  • Objective Analysis

Well at least he did not cry today when he resigned OR DID HE?  I did not watch the coward.

  • sowsear

BO is going to have to come up with a bunch of new cushy jobs for those he promised…

  • confused American

He was voted in for his views on certain issues by his constituents.  His constituents did not want this and he still voted yes…

I for one do not like abortion personally…but to me it is a pesonal issue…

It being a pesonal issue I do feel that many are right. Those who oppose it should not be paying for someone’s else’s abortion except under certain exceptions…

I do feel that abortion is too often being used as a Birth Control method in a society that has way more than enough good people out there willing to adopt, along with paying for expenses.

That being sad  — What Stupak did to his constituents was wrong..

What many of the Democratic Congressmen did to their constiuents was wrong…They are supposed to listen to the people who voted them in, not to bribery.

  • Buzzlatte

I bet we would have a huge class action if we could sue him for just pissing us off!  LOL!

I have to agree that Bart Supak’s picture is on the Wall of Shame next to Benedict Arnold’s.

He did indeed sell his soul but perhaps there’s a beauty in all of this. The dems are dropping like flies. Did you say 19?

We have started listening to the old radio classics (“The Shadow” etc) on satelite radio, more and more when we’re in the car. It helps. Also I listen to all 1940′s music on satellite radio at home—-Anyway, that helps us.

Another great post, Rev. Amy— And didn’t you just know that’s what that jacka-napes Stupak was going to do?

Well, we had the “Leave Britney Alone” video,

Here’s the “Leave Obama Alone” version (bring Kleenex):

I have to start studying accounting soon.  If that doesn’t kill me nothing will.  I will have to turn it off then.

    OT

I took a picture from the road and sent it to my son of the old Cowboy Stadium.  They are going to blow it up tomorrow.

It will be a sad day.

My good girlfriend and flight attendent buddy was one of the original Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders on the famous poster that out sold the famous Farrah Fawcett poster.  She got fired at Frontier for calling in sick for her trip during the SuperBowl in New Orleans.  It was Denver/Dallas and the cameraman showed her on tv all night.  But Tex Schram (?) called and got her job back for her.

She used to babysit my son after she quit, and I was still flying.  I also cut her long, long, long hair to shoulder length on an overnight trip in Utah.  Men hated me all over America.

She loved Ryan sooooooooo much.  She had 2 girls and when she finally had a boy, she named him Michael Ryan.  Unfortunately, Michael was killed by a car hitting him while he was out skate boarding with a friend when he was 12.

I only saw one game in the stadium, and it was a state high school football game that the neighbors made me go to.

Lots of memories. The new stadium is beautiful.

    :-D

  • sowsear

I just couldn’t bring myself to watch any of those….

  • Cindy

carol—I knew about the new stadium….but can’t believe they’re blowing up the oldie! The passing of an era.

  • Buzzlatte

Yeah, unfortunately this happened.  Probably the truth lies with the parents.  Adoption agencies have been less than above board before.  One of their spiels has been that with a enough love, clean clothes, good food, and hugs any behavioral problems could be resolved.  They gloss over intellectual potentials and behavior issues.  I’ve dealt with a couple unhappy matches where intellectual and behavioral problems had adoptive parents angry with the child and the system.  It’s not easily remedied.

Unfortunately sometimes all the loving in the world can’t resolve behavioral issues.  I wonder if the parents got any sort of clinical help or classes to deal with the child.

  • confused American

Sow me either — My mute button is already pretty worn out due to overuse when they broadcast another Obama speech….

  • Cindy

oowawa—- oh my god—that last one is priceless. I laughed so hard! Sorry, I was supposed to be crying, I know.
My machine is sooooo slow, therefore can’t watch all of ‘em at one sitting.( Still living in the Druids Age, as far as computers)
thanks for the laughs—-who IS that guy??!!

  • sowsear

My son and his wife adopted a baby from China…were advised against Russia mainly because of alcohol syndrome. Many want Russian children because “they look like us”
It is also a problem adopting an older child. Who knows what has happened over those years.

  • sowsear

I thought they said kaput ist kaput.

  • sowsear

Carol, Tell me again why you are taking accounting if you hate the whole idea. Are accounting jobs the only ones available in your area?

  • jbjd

Bl, it was at 14 further upthread.  Now, you say 19.  Hopefully, by the time I reach the bottom, the number will be closer to (how many D’s are in the House?)…

  • carol haka

I’ve been very successful in one area of sales in banking that needed no accounting or credit evaluation skills.  That is over.

To be anything other than a personal banker – yuck – I need to be able to have underwriting expertise.  My Finance Degree is 30 years old next month.  I have no idea which end is up in that area now.  I never used it.

So, I am going to do a program at community college, most can be done on the internet, that is designed for people that already have a Bachelor’s degree and take only the accounting courses necessary for you to be able to sit for the CPA exam.  It’s a total of 30 hours, and I only need 21.  Good part is you get certified to different levels throughout the program.

Then, I will qualify to work in Treasury or Commercial.  That’s were the really big money and freedom is at in banking.  I have been able to work from home most of my career and sitting in a cubicle on a time clock is not for me.

Here’s hoping I’ve won the lotto tonight.

    :-D

You’re welcome, Cindy.  IMHO, all of these are hysterically funny.  It seems to be an ongoing art form on You Tube.

And speaking of the New Testament—here’s another apropos quote for this Stupak post:

Yes, fetal alcohol syndrome or whatever it’s called now pretty much swiss cheeses the brain.  What comes out as behavioral symptoms is a smorgasboard of developmental delays and disabilities.

I worked with 3 year olds that were hospitalized with serious behavioral issues like stabbing people in the back with scissors!  Age 3!

Had others that wouldn’t progress much beyond a 2nd grade level of understanding.  Sad, sad, sad.

    Sad story, sowsear.

American adoptees come with their full share of problems, too.  Childless friends took a four-year-old as a foster child last year, intending to adopt him.  They’re in their fifties, married late and were thrilled that they would have a child after all.  It was a disaster.  This child had so many problems (all unmentioned by child welfare authorities) that my friend, who possesses a BA in special education, could not handle him and had to give him up.  She said caseworkers told her virtually nothing about the boy’s background.  She was flying blind.  Nothing she did seemed to work.  He kicked, hit, screamed and swore and threatened to kill them.  They finally reached the point where they were actually afraid of him.

The truth is, sometimes love just ain’t enough.

  • Sassy

Thank you Amy for the current Stupak situation. I had not known about his son’s death, but thought Representative Stupak was sincere about his beliefs.
We have many controversial, divisive political issues, but anyone who takes a pro-life stance should not yield on that point.
Stupak garnered 60% and higher of the votes in his district, and was rumored to be pulling 30% after these votes.
I wonder if his conscience is clear.

But on the other hand, you should never turn your back on a coward or you may wind up like Jesse James, who turned his back on “that dirty little coward,” Robert Ford.

  • sowsear

“laden with irony”, they say. One person on passenger list did not make the flight….

This term “centrist” seems to mean “political opportunist”.

Since when is it considered good and moral to compromise on your principles so as to advance some political agenda?

    I am over these “centrists”.

Goodbye Stupak – take Reid, Specter and Nelson with ya!

I’m afraid Tiger’s karma is going to eventually cause him to be reincarnated as a lonely underwater walrus . . .

  • Docelder

Somebody is hopefully checking on the person who missed the plane and whether their bags made it onto that plane without them.

I saw something the other day that said drugs for pedophiles/sex offenders are still in the bill.

The Prime Minister who was defeated last year by the now dead President is still alive and responding to Putin as his counterpart.

  • oowawa

Well that’s just excellent!  I call that rhetorical judo–using the opponent’s own verbal momentum to throw him down on his face.

Severely OT but thousands expected to honor woman Cherokee Leader…

The dead president’s twin brother is the leader of the opposition…

    Wow–this sounds like a melodramatic novel . . .

Just found these great cartoons:  Sarah vs. Obama

    :-D

Good article Amy–I have a hunch the clue was in Stupak’s “not fun” comment.  There comes a time when you just don’t do what you don’t absolutely have to do if ding it it is ugly and no fun.

Lol those comparison cartoons were awesome Carol , thanks for sharing.

Bart Stupak is a tough call.  On the one hand, he’s an anti-choice pig.  On the other, his cave-in finally allowed passage of life-giving legislation that will aid millions of women across this country.  I’m glad he’s leaving, but I also appreciate his critical vote.  His last-minute deal with the White House was just an empty order ratifying the status quo.

  • Docelder

Life giving. That is some funny stuff. So insurance companies give life now? So next time you get sick take it up with a health insurance salesman.

  • AnnieCarmel

Gasp!  Why, why, you don’t believe he’d get a job….representing the health care industry do you?

    What a POS.

  • confused American

Sowsear —All one has to do is take a look at Obama’s Czars to see all the new cushy  jobs he has already made up….

I know there was  one politician who was already promised one for not running.  Since he spilled the beans on that one its probably not going to happen anymore.

  • graywolf

    “Centrist Democrat”:
    What an oxymoron.
    ROFLMAO.
There are only far-left and Marxist Democrats.

  • Jackie

People without health insurance avoid getting preventive care because they cannot afford full cost.  People without preventive care end up with long term illnesses they could have treated earlier if they’d had insurancec.  They then die sooner.  Therefore, this legislation is life-giving.  Not so hard to understand.

    Don’t forget Pelosi….

I agree, CA – I think Stupak is done in MI and is just trying to make sure he doesn’t end his career in defeat.

And thanks, y’all- I appreciate it!

  • politicsisdirty

It is unfortunate that when having to chose between the teachings of the Christian religion and the Democratic party, Stupak chose the Democratic party.

He should have prayed hard before making the decision. It is awful that a man thought that he can save his soul by voting against God’s teachings.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Spare us the sanctimony.  Women who require abortions through rape and incest have had abortions provided for them with federal funds for years.

At some point, people bear RESPONSIBLITY for their own actions.  Use birth control, get the morning after pill if a pregnancy is even a possiblity.  Condoms are readily avaialble, and even FREE at a number of places.

Accountability is not a bad thing, you know.  It’s what grown ups do.   Like Hillary, I believe abortions should be safe, legal, and RARE.

Thanks, John – and great comment by you and everyone else in this thread!
