Ok, I got home just in time to see McCain introduce his VP pick. Obama and Biden are SCREWED!

This solidifies my decision to vote McCain.

And it is not just because there is a woman on his ticket. It is because John McCain selected a woman. He put his presidency on the line, he put his faith in a woman. He considers a woman a worthy running mate. And he showed respect for those 18 million Hillary supporters, and he showed that he listened to the women in America, and that he values what we have to say.

Unlike Obama.

Obama made a very big mistake in not selecting Hillary. (although I did not want her on that sinking ship) Obama made a very big mistake telling Hillary supporters to get over it. He made a very big mistake in not reaching out to us. He made a HUGE mistake in never trying to control the vile attacks towards Hillary supporters, from his supporters. And he made a huge mistake in never speaking out to control the attacks on Hillary during the primaries. And his wife made a big mistake when she was asked if she would support Hillary, should she be the nominee. And they made a HUGE mistake when they tried to paint the Clintons as racists. And they screwed up when they tried to threaten us with Roe v Wade.

They are going to have a very hard time going after Sarah Palin, especially on her pro-life stance. You can’t attack a woman who stands by her convictions.

John McCain shook things up, and selected a new kind of candidate, a candidate who will bring change, and who is truly from outside of Washington.

Obama selected Biden, a guy who has been in DC for 35 years. Obama went safe, and mainstream. What kind of change is that?

I am very excited to getting to know her, as a candidate and a person. From what I have read and heard so far, I like.

I am sad, that Hillary is not where she should be. She should be on the Dem ticket – heading the ticket, but on it either way. She truly did break the glass ceiling, but, sadly for her, and her supporters, it is Sarah Palin that will be walking through it.

But, if all goes well – McCain/Palin will win, and Hillary will become Majority Leader, and the most powerful person in the Senate. And maybe then, we truly will have a non-partisan government that will work together, and get things done!

Way to go McCain!

And thank you Hillary Clinton, for enduring all that you have, in these past 18 months, and your whole political life, really, for breaking that glass ceiling, and putting a woman in the White House, one way or another. You truly are an inspiration, a fighter and a hero. And you will never be forgotten.

p.s. Is it just me, or is everyone excited to see Tine Fey on SNL, as Sarah Palin?

When Jesse Jackson won approx. 465 delegates, he got every one of those votes recorded for history at the convention.

When Hillary won 1,920 delgates, she got less than 20% of them recorded for history at the convention. BO was too afraid to even let the realities of her historic accomplishment be recorded on the roll call. After all this time, and on the day after the 88th anniversary of women’s gaining the vote in the US, the best he could agree to was to let his party record a mere token vote for Hillary.

I remember in high school covering various cultural beliefs about the beginning of humanity, in a mythology class. Multiple ancient cultures have great flood stories too. In science, it was only evolution but they did mention that some people believed in creation, then back to evolution and Darwin.

At the federal level this is really a moot point and should not be an issue at all since school districts are controlled at the local level by locally elected Boards of Education. No matter what Plain believes it will make no difference.

States also have some control through their state educational standards. If individuals want their children to know about creationism they can send their children to a private school or home school them. For me creationism is not a make or break issue for who gets my support. I only have one goal this year.I am only dedicated to making sure Obama and the DNC lose this year.

I learned about those creation myths in college, and yes they could be taught in a science course…only as a historical reference of where we’ve come from to our current post quantum mechanics knowledge.

I’m often concerned that the left have become too afixed to their positions…like a sort of left wing conservatism that must preserve its identity by its own catch phrases like the right wing clings to its god and country.

There are rules to these processes, and as Pelosi said, the rules were suspended for unanimous consent. They could not even acknowledge, on the convention record, that she won almost as many pledged delegates as he did.

As a former special education teacher, children like Palin’s son grow up, go to school and are often very socialble and affectionate children. There are many mothers/parents who could benefit from better health insurance to provide the care that children with special needs often require. I don’t think this is the case with the Palins. My thought is this: Why is there only a one spot for women in politics? Think about it, if McCain/Palin do shatter the glass ceiling and people get to see a woman VP in action, doesn’t that make it more likely for a woman to become potus? I think Palin paving the way for Presidency will be a blessing for women to come, no doubt.

The bottom line is: Obama spit on the face of Hillary Clinton supporters, while McCain demonstrated that he hears the nation and what is taking place. If McCain/Palin get elected in 2008 and really are “more of the same”, then the country will be even MORE ready for change in 2012 than it is now, thus helping Hillary’s chances. If they ‘rule’ for 8 years, the natural yin-yang of party alternation will also help her.

If Obama/Biden are elected in 2008 and they’re good, then they are in for 8 years and we’ve never had > 8 years of Dem ‘rule’ so she’d have an uphill battle to follow them. If they’re bad then they’re out in 4 years but the country won’t want a Dem to replace them.

I am a chosen one. My 42 year old Down Syndrome angel is in her downward side to life and won’t be with me much longer but she has given me 42 years of complete joy.

She broke many barrier’s such as being the first DS to be allowed to go to Montesorri Preschool where she fit in perfectly with the other children. She was one of the first to be in educable mentally handicap program where she learned to read and write and was able to address the school board one evening asking to save the Special Ed center for those special individuals who couldn’t quite make it in the mainstream as she had. She was mainstreamed in typing class and learned to type. She showed them and I am so proud of her.

But her short 42 years of life is coming to its conclusion as is the case with many lovely down syndrome children in mid-life. But hey many parents loose “normal” children for various reasons and I have had the glory of being her mother for 42 long years. I was the lucky one.

So NO one better preach to me about Roe Vs Wade.
It was my decision to keep this precious child and yes there have been challenges but I was up to the task and was one of Kansas’s most vocal advocate in the early years paving the way for those down’s angels yet to be born in our educational system. No regrets EVER!!!!!

Go Governor Palin. Nothing you are about to face will be as rewarding as raising that delightful family but I am glad that you are going to try. What a week…crying on Wednesday when Hillary performed the last act of the DNC play. Crying today when Sarah Palin was confirmed to be McCain’s VP choice. Tonight I did not let nasty words against McCain’s choice bother me. He made a brilliant move, on many levels. He reached out to Hillary supporters (and women in general), he defied the prevailing wisdom of party and pundits. At the same time he managed to rally his naysayers within the Republican party. A stunning decision. And the pundits and Dem partisans can say what they want about the qualifications of a governor to be (a heartbeat away from) president…we’ve elected them often: Reagan, Carter, Bush, and Clinton for starters.

I have no reservations about the bottom of the McCain ticket (unlike the top of the Biden ticket).

McCain’s 92 y/o mother flew to Europe a couple of years ago on her own and when she got to France and tried to rent a car, she was told she was too old so she just bought one instead. She had a great trip and I believe I remember that she traveled around for a couple of months wherever the notion took her. She’s elegant and smart and looks about 15 years younger, wrinkles and all. When people mention his age, he usually refers them to her. Maybe you should suspend judgement about age.

There isn’t an overall position, just a respect(we try) for your right to vote for whomever you choose. Yes many Hillary supporters here, and many Republicans, Democrats and Independents, and a lot of trolls.
People who have actual discussion, disagree often, and then there are some who come just to troll and insult, and as you will see(by some of the troll comments) that doesn’t go over well. We aren’t great at taking sexist, racist remarks, no matter who they are thrown at. I would also add it appears many of us here either are voting Indep or McCain or not voting, but that is only an observation. Issues are talked about, and it is interesting to note, many here are not one issue voters, so we have a wide range of people, with many, many thoughts and opinions.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton’s former communications director, said Palin could peel away some votes from Obama and Biden. “Both campaigns seemed to have decided that Hillary Clinton’s 18 million voters represent a key swing bloc in this election — both Barack Obama’s speech and John McCain’s pick were at least partially aimed at them,” Wolfson said in an e-mail. “The fact that Palin is pro-life and pro-gun will be a block for many of Senator Clinton’s supporters — but not all. I went to the store after hearing it was Palin and in the parking lot a man was on a cell phone saying “he will pick up all Hillary’s supporters now” I couldn’t tell if he was glad or mad.. he was shouting.
This choice made me so happy. Even though I am a democrat, I am a mother of 3 and from a small town. I hate Roe. vs. Wade being hung over my head and debated by men!! Roe vs. wade for me personally means little, I am fixed just like the cat! Roe vs. Wade for me is about protecting women’s rights… we shouldn’t lose our right to live because we are pregnant forced to die and leave our other children motherless, or be forced to have a child due to rape… but Babies do have rights, too. They shouldn’t be left to die after a botched abortion and shouldn’t be carelessly aborted because someone accidentally got pregnant and is having her 4th abortion! Obviously, that person needs to be on birth control!
Anyway, a woman (one with children) will be better on these issues than a man ANYDAY! Most women become more conservative when they have children. I still hold lots of my way left views but feel like I have been forced to really think about issues this year… what I really think about things, not just going with the party.
Just supporting Hillary made me change alittle. She brought me back to reality, I had been a move on nut.

I just had breakfast with my best friends daughter that just graduated from a top NY university..we read the NY papers at breakfast and we were both in such Joy over reading about this incredible woman..we were giddy with Joy..

Now never in my life have i ever voted for a republican..but right now i have joy over thinking i will cast my vote for McCain and Palin.

And i have pride in some of these young people..some are smart enough to “get it”

All Palin says is, teachers should tell children religion has ‘proven’ their religion a falsity. Any sound depiction of judeo-christian belief, in all its grand diversity, would acknowledge than many (if not most) of its traditions recognize Genesis as an allegory, a story, told from the perspective of a deity, not a literal description of how (and over how long) man arose on this Earth.

The problem is that there are too many antireligious teachers who regularly use scientific instruction as a pretext to suggest that evolution belies judeo-christian belief, a simplicity without context, poisoning many young minds.

When teachers do that, it’s an intrusion of the classroom into religion, surely as serious a wrong as the intrusion of religion into the classroom.

taboobie, no I wouldn’t vote for Hillary if she was the candidate for VP with Nobama, because I don’t like the self-proclamed ‘american idol’ at all. I’ve been a registered democrat up until yesterday. I’ve decided to go Republican this time, no matter who the candidate for VP would be. I am not a feminist either. Luckily, I’ve never needed to fight for my rights as a human being. Regarding abortion, I think it is time women take responsibility for their acts and avoid getting pregnant if they are not ready to become mothers, so they won’t have to get an abortion. McCain is planning to look into allowing women to have abortions in special cases. That’s good enough for me.

let me preface this with saying the media’s treatment of hillary clinton during the primary was shameful and only went to show how far we are from a truly free society.

but…

what attracted you to hillary clinton in the first place? her voting record as a senator? her work as first lady? her leadership in redefining women’s roles in america? her gender?

when i cast a vote it is not for the person, but the values they represent. i would be equally happy voting for a woman, a man, a caucasian or an african american as long as i feel they will represent my values well.

i believe in women’s rights, i believe in peace, i believe in healthcare, i believe in gun control, i believe in a woman’s right to choose, i believe in equal pay. i suspect many of you share these beliefs. i know obama will support these values, and i know mccain will undermine them. his choice of pallin is a pathetic attempt to court hillary democrats by using their frustration with the primary to vote against their interests. i always thought we were smarter than that. if you don’t want to vote for obama because of the primary, fine, just please don’t vote for mccain. it is a vote against your values.

There are fundamental character decency that should be considered before the issues you address. Many ruthless dictators believed in the things you identify but I never support them because of their underlying lack of human decency by the way they treat people who disagree with them.

Obama, Obama’s New Democratic Party and many of his supporters lack human decency. This was clear during the primary (e.g., the way they treated Hillary and her supporters) and it’s surfacing again with the way Palin as a woman is being portrayed and responded to. This is a significant character flaw.

You have to ask yourself: Underneath it all, what types of personalities would treat people the way Obama and many of his supporters treated Hillary and her supporters, and are now treating Palin?

Do you condone this thug behavior? Do you want to reward this behavior?

If you vote for Obama, you are supporting this behavior and the sexist treatment of women. You then have to question your fundamental ethics.

PS: There is a democratic congress. When McCain becomes President, he will have to work with a different political party. This helps with checks and balances, which is what this government was founded on.

i do not consider obama’s behavior or his supporters thuggish in any respect. so he didn’t respond to flagrant sexism in the cable media, hillary didn’t respond to the flagrant racism directed at him. in national politics the gloves come off and if you’re going to win, you cannot play nice. you can, however conduct your campaign with decency and respect, which i believe both dem candidates did even in a pitched battle like it was.

i think that obama is a good and decent man who happens to feel the same way i do about many issues facing this country. therefore he’s got my vote.

i am curious which ruthless dictators advanced women’s rights. i do not remember any off the top of my head.

also, i’m not buying the checks and balances argument. that’s just saying we should have a conservative branch of the govenment for the sake of conservatism. as a liberal, i oppose this.

Speaking as someone who preferred Clinton to Obama, I think that voting as a result of emotional upset or impressions, rather than rational thought, is a mistake (e.g. Reagan, W). I don’t like some of what Obama (and/or his staff) has done this past year, but a vote for McCain/Palin is a vote for ignorance, further destruction of the environment, bellicosity in dealing with other nations, economic crises, and a further erosion of civil liberties.
