More Terrorism Bullshit

Let the turf battle begin. FBI is going full monty to seize control of the investigation into the failed car fire in NYC and is busy leaking info that there is an international angle. Mind you I write, “failed car fire.” If you want to believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny and that this contraption was a “car bomb” then have at it. In my experience a bomb must have the means and likelihood of exploding. The mess in the Nissan SUV was not even a good incendiary. C’mon, it ain’t that tough to set gasoline on fire. Propane? Open the tank and strike a match (or even a small spark). But the brain surgeon who assembled this Rube Goldberg collection could not even figure that out.

At what point will we as a people rediscover our backbone? Gauging our collective overblown reaction to the non-explosion in NYC’s Time Square we have become a quivering mass of jello. Listening to Charles Krauthammer tonight, for example, who was ranting about terrorism and the need for military measures, etc., makes you wonder how we ever won the Cold War against a real enemy that possessed robust, deadly military capabilities. If Charles had exhibited the same attitude towards the Soviets he would have had no bladder control and would have been sitting in an etermal pool of urine. That’s what you do when you piss yourself out of fear.

I have no doubt that there are extremist muslims who would love to kill Americans and destroy our cities. If desire equaled capability then we would be toast. But thankfully we do not live in that nightmare of a fantasy world. We inhabit a real world where the ability to shoot a gun or build a bomb requires training by people who are knowledgeable and qualified to teach such skills. What should we be learning about the capabilities of the various radical Islamic groups?

They are not very good. Why? Because the policy of killing and capturing these folks has been pretty effective. Not just the U.S. Countries like Yemen and Saudi Arabia and Jordan have stepped up to the plate and gone after the radicals. When you eliminate senior cadre and experienced operatives you weaken the ability of the group or organization to conduct offensive operations. It is no surprise that the Christmas underwwear bomber could only manage to torch his pubes and his balls. Improvised explosives, especially in the hands of amateurs, are not easy or simple. They can be damn dangerous to those who do not know what they are doing.

The botched plot in NYC is even more telling. Let’s assume that the instructions can from overseas. We had a willing soul willing to drive the vehicle to Times Square (but apparently not committed enough to crank the thing off while sitting in the vehicle). I don’t know if this was an aspiring jihadist or jilted boyfriend. Regardless, the individual did not even have enough knowledge to understand that the contraption assembled in the back of the Nissan would not explode.

One more pet peeve. Krauthammer was wearing his ass prominently on his smug mug, complaining that the special High Value Interrogation team had not been activated. Chuckie, that team exists for overseas operations. It is not a domestic capability. The Republicans continue to stir the pot about treating terrorism as a law enforcement matter. Well boys and girls, here’s the cold hard facts–the NYPD and the FBI are light years better than any military organization in the world in investigating an incident like this. The military is a blunt instrument (even the much touted special ops units like Delta and the SEALs). Can we at least appreciate that we have a legal system and police capability quite competent to handle the threat at hand? Or do we want to become Cuba or the former Soviet Union and militarize everything and, in the process, surrender our civil rights and legal constraints on executive power? I’m with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington on this.

Finally! Someone who knows what they’re talking about. Oh, Carol…

  • AC

I still believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy but that was not a bomb.

  • BuzzLatte

Once a member of my family had a moronic moment and over-filled a propane tank that was in the back of a truck.  It was hot out and all of a sudden propane was shooting sky-high out of the bleed off or safety valve.

I couldn’t interest the police or the fire department into coming and checking things out.  They told me to just park the truck in the shade.  They assured me that there wouldn’t be any Hollywood firebomb or destruction and that it would take alot more to blow anything up.

    I believe Larry.

  • Rosa

but we can now talk about more than the oil disaster.

There you go, trying to be part of the “reality” community.  Well AC, well played.  Very well played.

American Who Recently Visited Pakistan Eyed in Times Square Bomb Plot
The person is a naturalized American citizen who was in Pakistan for several months and returned to the United States recently, investigative sources told Fox News
As far as I am aware they never stated they were SE Asian or Pakistani origin they stated the person had visited Pakistan.

I remember that from Mythbusters. Their crew had to heat the propane tank for some minutes over an extremely powerful gas burner to get it to explode…

This was a bunch of stuff thrown together that was supposed to look like a bomb.lol

  • TeakWoodKite

So the guy got the design for this on which website? I am sure there was a bullet point that said “make sure to leave the “fertilizer” in the bags it came in.

While it goes without saying, I am glad that no ones plans where curtailed, I am curious what the turf wars are about, that Mr. Johnson alluded to. Why?

    “can’t we just get along?”
Fear sucks. as for destruction in times square, try News Years eve after the ball drops. Or a cetian book that was popular in the 60′s.
But then again, just walking down the 14th street subway staircase, can just as risky as waiting in an alley across from Ayersold place waiting for the sun to rise.

  • Clara

One of the women reporters on Fox mentioned the Asian link.  Can’t recall if it was Judith Miller or Catherine Herridge (sp).  I was incorrect with the Pakistani origin.  You’re correct in saying it was reported that this person visited Pakistan for several months.

And by the way, how is it that that fool can visit the white house after his bomb making past? And those killed people.

  • Yttik

I hope people are finding some humor in all this. If it were true that some foreign entity had hired an American to do their dirty work, it’s funny to  think they managed to find the only guy in the country incapable of blowing up a BBQ. He must be a city boy, because out here in the county I think having accidents with propane is a recreational sport.

I doubt very seriously that we have all the details of exactly what was in that SUV.  It was smoking.  It might have been on fire.  Ultimately, if there was garbage or anything else that could have burned, the SUV could have burned.  And, it could have potentially been a diversion or a test.

Why don’t we wait for all of the facts?  And personally, having been the victim of an illegal act, in the long run it isn’t really important to me who handles the crime scene as long as it gets handled properly – I’m not interested in the ego of the turf wars.

    >:o

  • Patience

While the media may be hyping this story I don’t know anyone in real life who’s shaking in their boots.  Times Square was packed with people tonight when a live shot was shown on the evening news.

I generally like Krauthammer but if Larry’s characterization of his comments are accurate then I think he’s way off base on this one.  As well, I have a hard time imagining that this lamely-executed incident (jeez, the valves of the propane tanks weren’t even opened) was a test for a bigger and better attempt yet to come.  But it’s certainly stolen some of the limelight from the oil spill story.  Hmmm…

  • insanelysane

Larry, as usual…you can dice & slice it  for the rest of us.
     I agree.
I’m with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and you on this.

BTW…where are our patriots and our statemen?

Isn’t any gas in a container a potential “missile” when it is heated?

    *DONT_KNOW*

  • Larry Johnson

Yes.  But that’s not a bomb.

  • jwrjr

Not only that, but the Propane tank never actually exploded.  It burst violently, to be sure.  But not only was there no flame from the tank, it actually blew out the flame from the burner.

  • jwrjr

Not unless there is a relatively small weak spot on the tank.  Without that it just blows the tank apart.

  • Onofre’s arm

Carol, if a completely filled cylinder of oxygen or other similar gas has it’s top busted off, it can become a very dangerous, although very random, projectile. That’s why they are normally very well secured.

And off course, any pressurized tank of gas will explode under the right circumstances, and make the container, or parts of it, dangerous projectiles.

Whoever threw all of these elements together in that vehicle must have been relying more on prayer, than physics or chemistry, to get their desired results. Even the ammonium nitrate, (fertilizer) if it was there, would not have done much without having some fuel oil mixed in with it, and even if it had, it takes a very powerful type of detonation to set it off, otherwise it just burns.

The news says that the wrong fertilizer was used.

Sounds like someone went MacGyver with some stuff they had in their garage.

Gasoline is not going to make much of a boom. If the SUV was filled with gasoline or propane vapors it would blow out windows, but not much else.

But still not good for bystanders.

The propane tank pressure relief valve would vent excess pressure if the tank were heated, but that would just make the fire bigger, and would not make an explosion.

Commercial fertilizer, ammonium nitrate, would make a decent boom, but apparently you can’t make a fertilizer bomb with Miracle Grow. Different nitrogen compound.

I imagine buying large quantities of Ammonium Nitrate should raise a flag unless you are a farmer.

AN has other uses and can be bought in small quantities. I would not mess with it for an unintended use. I kind of like my limbs attached to my body.

  • jwrjr

“I imagine buying large quantities of Ammonium Nitrate should raise a flag unless you are a farmer.”  Ever since Kansas City it does, even if you are a farmer.
That SUV was either the work of an incompetent “terrorist”, a terrorist wannabe, or somebody making a joke in extremely bad taste.  And until the “authorities” know for sure they must assume the worst.

  • Peggy Sue

Well, I’m ready to close down and just heard this Bozo was picked up at JFK, trying to fly to Dubai.  He’s an American citizen of Pakistani descent. I give the authorities credit.  At least they picked him up quickly.  Now maybe the facts behind the attempt will come out. Whatever it was.

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

I am also with TJ and GW on a limited use of Federal and Military power.

BTW, the US, and every state, county, (parish), city, town, township and whatever else we call local government, are all part of the National Incident Management System, NIMS.

NIMS goes into action whether it’s a Poo Fire Bomb in Times Square, or a flood in Tennessee.

Every incident is handled at the local level, and fed up the chain (like the military chain of command) as needed and requested by the locals.

I don’t know that the FBI would automatically have authority unless the target was a Federal jurisdiction like a bank or the Geo W Bridge.

So the Poo Fire Vehicle in Times Square would be investigated by NYPD, State Police, and FBI if requested by the State IMS.

NIMS is a function that government actually performs very well (Katrina excepted).

Hopefully NIMS will work for the failed arson attempt and the turf battle won’t get too political.

  • EllenD

I just read that it was a fertilizer that couldn’t be used for explosives. This terrorist is batting 1000.

  • EllenD

    Miracle Grow???!!!

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

Ellen – Accoring to the media, NYPD says the perp used the wrong kind of fertilzer for making a bomb. I assume he must have used Miracle Grow or a  similar product.

    Pretty funny.

Larry is right that the collective IQ of the Radical Islamists has suffered a huge decline due to the elimination of high value operatives.

But, that is no reason for us to be less vigilant or to weaken our stand for a non-nuclear Iran.

Hillary Clinton is providing the tough talk, but Obama is going for “containment” of a nuclear Iran. Containment will never work.

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

What happened in Kansas City? Do you mean Oklahoma City?

  • POdVet

Wrong kind of fertilizer huh. I can hear it now. (next fear monger reports) He actually wanted to make a dirty bomb…thats why he used cow manure instead of nitrogen!

  • sasabedave

After carrying a badge and a gun for 39 years, first as a Detroit Police officer and then retiring as a Federal agent after 24 years, I have come to learn that FBI stands fot Fu**ing Big Idiot.  This a a turf war. The FBI couldn.t find their ass with both hands, federal agencies are awarded budget dollars on what kind of bullshit they can take credit for. I am quite sure that the NYPD can do a great job of  investigating the incident and bringing those resopnsible to justice.  FBI, go pick up your suits at the dry cleaners !!

  • Bob

Good post Larry. They have made an arrest in the case. There may very well be an international angel to this. May be a little more to it than you think. However, I agree the bomb was pretty much amateur hour. I just cannot stand politicians and commentators who turn the terrorism threat into a BS political issue.

35 year NYPD bomb squad veteran Kevin Barry has a somewhat different take – NYC was lucky. http://tinyurl.com/2a4dud8

The propane-fueled flames wouldn’t have brought down any buildings and would have lasted only a few seconds, but with flames shooting as high as 30 feet, the toll on people nearby would have been devastating, Barry said.
The fireball would have caused horrific lung damage and fried the hair and faces of anyone within a 50-yard radius.
“It could burn the throat and then cause death. It’s a difficult thing to deal with,” Barry said.
“We came within a millisecond,” added Barry, who put in 35 years with the NYPD, the last 20 years on the bomb squad. “Because had that detonator functioned correctly, we would have had a huge explosion.”

  • Docelder

Our saving grace is that these terrorists have for the most part been inept in both design and in execution. 911 is the exception. 911 was just dumbass luck on their part.

  • jwrjr

    Thanks for the correction.

  • Sassy

    Your right oowawa!
He, his wife and children become citizens, and he leaves the country to get better news coverage about his new home.
Unlike Larry, I enjoyed Krauthammer’s comments last evening, especially the line about “bad electrician”!

  • Ladydawnelle

perhaps the “morons” were trying only to “change the subject” and instill a bit more fear (than already exists) in the city and get us off the oil spill or any number of other things that Barry has failed at lately!  (healthcare, iran,n korea, etc)

  • Linda Anselmi

Great post Larry.  I kind of like having civil rights and the rule of law.   And George and Thomas are good company.

  • Docelder

Honestly, we ought to be cncerned with the porous border with Mexico. The flow of undocumented people would be a vector to spread a biological style attack. The easiest way to inject smallpox into the US would be to seed it in Nuevo Laredo and Juarez. The rest would take care of itself as we have no control right now over the flow of illegals to and from the border with Mexico. On the contrary, we seem to subvert our own laws that we do have.

  • oowawa

This statement makes me very nervous, Doc–like, “I know this road like the back of my hand.”  Even the losers get lucky sometimes, and we dare not take comfort in their poor track record or in evidence of their ineptitude.

  • oowawa

Smallpox?  Isn’t that stuff highly secured?  This is interesting.  What do you think, as a Doctor, is the main thing to worry about in the way of biological agents? (I’m always looking for something new to keep me awake at nights.)

  • Tricia

I apprecaited this–a good counterpoint to what I see on TV.

  • Onofre’s arm

Gee oowawa, you could lie awake worrying about MDR-TB (multiple drug resistant tuberculosis). It would be improper and insensitive of you to ask the person who just coughed up a huge quantity of green phlegm on your arm, where they are from. The  ridiculous fear of contracting a highly contagious disease from an illegal who was never properly medically screened, is a sure sign of your hateful RACISM!!!

And worrying about the illegals with hepatitis working in the back of your favorite restaurant, would be further proof of your ignorant racist mindset.

  • mary2

Great column here and I believe it 100%.  It was a fear-mongering tactic. But why scare poor New Yorkers out of their minds again?  Who would profit from this fearmongering explosion?

Gosh, I will have to watch President Eisenhower’s 1961 speech (before JFK’s inaugaration) where he warned against the Military-Industrial complex and its dangers.

The taxpayers have spent over a $Trillion bucks supporting 900 bases all over the world and billions for the failed (wrong war, Dubya!) War in Iraq that created 6 million refugees, a million and a half of them widows working now as prostitutes in “nightclubs” for fat princes of the Gulf in Syria, Jordan, Emirates, etc.!

Now we have Obama’s New Vietnam AfPak and he’s destroying civilians by drones, inlcuding kids, daily plus the ultra-moron Telempropter Prez has created 3.5 millions (according to the State Dept.) refugees…

How long is the world going to be fooled by all this BULLSHIT?  Shame on Obumma

All true, good on the money side of the business.  I will add for your consideration that anything dramatic that happens in NYC, or Manhattan particularly, gets overhyped in the national tv media.  If this happened in St. Louis, same coverage?  I think no.

Where’s John Belushi when we need him?

The whole affair appears to have been scripted by the writing staff of Saturday Night Live back in its Golden Age. All it needs is a spot on “Weekend Update” and an Emily Litella treatment.

Fortunately, America is beset by enemies who, except for those who got extremely lucky on 9/11, can’t tell the Positive from the Negative, recap a bottle of Four Roses without cross-threading it and largely are unable to resolve the differences between shit and Shinola.

The Mad Bomber of Manhattan (NOT!) should be cruelly and unusually punished in the following fashion:

After his sentencing, but before being sent to Club Cameljockey, he should be force to run the length of any major thoroughfare in Manhattan…Fifth Avenue would be nice…buck-assed naked, save for appropriate footwear.

Businesses in Manhattan should be encouraged to grant half a day off to employees, per Jury Duty rules, and encouraged to witness this event.

Chris Matthews got into such a tizzy about Republicans criticizing Barack Obama on his terror policy that he flew off the handle, on Thursday’s Hardball, as he yelled at his GOP guest:

“What’s your problem with the guy? Why do you keep bitching?!”

During a segment with regular panelists, Democratic strategist Steve McMahon and Republican strategist Todd Harris, the MSNBC host directed, what seemed to be a pent-up frustration about the GOP at Harris, for his party’s questioning of “one of the smartest presidents we’ve ever had.”

Rep. Andre Carson: Tea Party Protesters Are ‘One of the Largest Threats to our Internal Security’

    by Larry O’Connor
    <!– Article Start –>
As our readers have already learned, Rep. Andre Carson gathered Capitol Hill reporters around him and told the tale of racial slurs and menacing crowds on the verge of hurling rocks at the congressmen.  Our first few videos showed the congressmen coming out of the Cannon Office Building, walking down the steps and into Independence Avenue from various angles.  None of those videos revealed the racial hatred Rep. Carson conveyed to reporters that day and none of the videos showed a mob rushing or in any way impeding the congressmen.
When Rep. Carson gathered reporters around him to spread the myth of racial slurs being hurled “fifteen times” he painted the protesters not just as racists, but as a terrorist threat.  We know this, because Kerry Picket of the Washington Times recorded Rep. Carson as he explained it all to eager reporters.
