“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

As no one can really say how this will unfold politically, it simply provides more evidence that McCain’s “brass balls” (as you put it) cause him to make rash, untested decisions that may or may not harm institutions such as his party or this country.

Well, my grandmother, an ardent Catholic who said the rosary every day, married my grandfather at the age of 16. My first cousin, who has a Master’s Degree, had 3 kids by the time she was 18. (On a scale of 1 to 10, she was about a 9.8)

Now if they wanted to cover this up, the Palins could have gotten the morning after pill, or the RU486 pill, and nobody would have been the wiser. But they believe abortion is killing (I do not, but it still makes me queasy). Kids do this.

I think the only people who should feel comfortable commenting on this is those who never had pre-marital sexual relations, or those parents who are absolutely sure that their teenagers have not either. What percentage of the population do you suppose that is?

Actually it is not that big of a deal. She is 17. Palin married her husband when she was 24 but they knew each other as high school sweathearts. Under Alaska law like other states, you can marry another person probably when you are 15 or older. It is called emanicipated minor.

Strangely,this draws another parallel to Obama’s ‘biography’.Obama’s own mother was very young and unmarried when he was conceived.

John Edwards was the first voice we have had in the democratic party since, I don’t know, Roosevelt, that spoke to the plight of the poor and the workers of this country. We let the right kick us in the teeth over his girlfriend, just like we did over Clinton, and he did not speak at the convention. I’m already reading stuff from the disciples of the one that Palin can’t be vp when she has so much famly stuff on her plate. Seems to me JFK had a child while president. Obviously the message that may or not come from team O is that only men can balance career and family. While that would make me puke, I almost hope they do it. Life is not always fair. Sometimes women and families have to make tough choices. I have no doubt many Americans can relate to what the Palin family is experiencing. The VP is an opportunity for Mrs. Palin that cannot be taken lightly- as it does not come along every day. Despite the challenges that will undoubtedly lie ahead, Sarah Palin seems to have a grounded “can do” attitude with a very supportive husband and extended family. The Democrats should know- there are all types of families in America. They better be careful should they start criticizing the Palins with regard to this personal family matter. I hope you aren’t the parent of teenagers. You are asking for trouble if you think that being a stay-at-home, involved mom keeps kids from getting pregnant. It may reduce the risk, but it is no guarantee. I grew up in the fifties when almost everyone’s mom stayed home yet a couple of girls from really nice families ended up pregnant (this was a small town). There were several others that I know for sure had unprotected sex at least a couple of times. In fact I know one of their moms who thought like you and her daughter was more at risk than most.

Do we know for sure that Palin told McCain about this? If not that could be a problem, unless she did not know until now, which is not out of the realm of possibilities.

The only criticism of her that I think has some validity is that she answered a questionnaire when running for governor where she said she approved of abstinence only education, and not explicit sex ed. The evidence is clear that only the latter works. So maybe if she had tried this her daughter would not be pregnant, but even that is no guarantee.

They don’t want school officials to teach their children about these sensitive issues. They want to have these conversations with their children in private at home away from other children where both the child and parent are free to speak their minds, ask open questions, and give detailed answers.

Sex education in school is not designed for the individual student’s needs, concerns, or fears. Children are not free to ask questions because they fear they’ll be made fun of by other children. Teachers cannot give personal advice that might apply to the individual child’s needs.

I didn’t have a daughter, but do have a son and we had talked to him about the conseqences of having sex before marriage. He and his girlfriend lived through a very trying time when she thought she was pregnant, marriage plans were being discussed when she got the tests results that she was not. We all had discussed the options available and they were choosing to get married. So, it can happen even if you have a son.

My sister became pregnant when she was 15. She had the baby, but due to the pressures of the times (late 60s) she gave the child up for adoption. She and the boy got married when they were 18. They have 3 wonderful children of their own. They have been married for 38 years. He is a network administrator for a company that runs the main-frames for most ATMs on the East Coast. She is a part-time instructor at a community college. Hardly the image of “white-trash”. I commend the Palins for welcoming this grandchild into their family. They are making the right decision. I’m still voting for McCain/Palin but this news really makes me nervous. I really hope this doesn’t cost McCain the election. Not sure how long Palin knew her daughter was pregnant but I wish they would have encouraged her to get married BEFORE telling the press she was pregnant. Since that obviously didn’t happen the only thing I can hope for is that Bristol gets married by the end of the month, so this is no longer brought up.
I do agree with whoever said if the Repubs have the “whitey” tape they should be putting it out now. I know many here don’t think this pregnancy will be a problem but I think it’s best if it gets out of the spotlight ASAP. The only way to do that is to put something out there about Obama.

This is a problem. No, it won’t cost the election because Obama really can’t make fun of 17 year old unwed moms (like his mom), but it does cast a doubt on our value system.

While it is fine to say we support the girl in keeping the baby (who had nothing to do with this), we should examine the situation that got her there so it doesn’t become an example for others that underage and unsafe sex is OK.

Did mom and dad think that sending kids to church automatically makes them moral? This child was screwing around behind her parents back while they were working. Mom has the highest position in the state, didn’t she once think of mom’s career?

The sad part is how those who support McCain at any cost attack you with the same tactics Obama Kool Aide drinkers attack those who don’t follow their line of garbage.

If we don’t recognize this as a moral failing, but one that can be an example to others of what not to do, maybe we can all get past this.

Another famous person who had a teenage pregnancy and carried the baby to term only to have him live only two weeks comes to mind: Oprah Winfrey. I don’t expect her to throw stones because she’s not that kind of person. I just mention it to put the whole subject into perspective. Teenage pregnancy is not an indicator in any way of a person’s potential or character, nor is it a reflection of a person’s upbringing, as evidenced by a lot of the comments preceding mine. This election cycle has been like watching a reality show–so much drama: from Jeremiah Wright to John Edwards to Bristol Palin. In all my 61 years I’ve not seen anything like it. I’m glad that there are blogs where all of us can see each others comments, good or bad, from each of our particular views. It helps to share by commenting or just reading the comments.

Although identified only as Frank in Mr Obama’s memoir Dreams from My Father, it has now been established that he was Frank Marshall Davis, a radical activist and journalist who had been suspected of being a member of the Communist Party in the 1950s.

Mr Davis moved to Honolulu from Chicago in 1948 with his second wife Helen Canfield, a white socialite, at the suggestion of his friend the actor Paul Robeson, who advised them that there would be more tolerance of a mixed race couple in Hawaii than on the American mainland.

A bohemian libertine who drank heavily and loved jazz, he became friends with Stanley Dunham, Mr Obama’s maternal grandfather in the 1960s. Mr Davis died in 1987 at the age of 81, five years before Mr Dunham.

“He knew Stan real well,” said Dawna Weatherly-Williams, a close friend of Mr Davis “They’d play Scrabble and drink and crack jokes and crack jokes and argue. Frank always won and he was always very braggadocio about it too. It was all jocular. They didn’t get polluted drunk. And Frank never really did drugs, though he and Stan would smoke pot together.”

While his mother was in Indonesia during part of his teenage years, Mr Obama lived with his white grandparents. Mrs Weatherly-Williams said that the poet was first introduced to the future Democratic presidential candidate in 1970 at the age of 10.

“Stan had been promising to bring Barry by because we all had that in common – Frank’s kids were half-white, Stan’s grandson was half-black and my son was half-black. We all had that in common and we all really enjoyed it. We got a real kick out of reality.”

Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obama’s half-sister, told the Associated Press recently that her grandfather had seen Mr Davis was “a point of connection, a bridge if you will, to the larger African-American experience for my brother”.

In his memoir, Mr Obama recounts how he visited Mr Davis on several occasions, apparently at junctures when he was grappling with racial issues, to seek his counsel. At one point in 1979 Mr Davis described university as “an advanced degree in compromise” that was designed to keep blacks in their place.

Mr Obama quoted him as saying: “Leaving your race at the door. Leaving your people behind. Understand something, boy. You’re not going to college to get educated. You’re going there to get trained.”

He added that “they’ll tank on your chain and let you know that you may be a well-trained, well-paid nigger, but you’re a nigger just the same.”

It has also been established that Mr Davis, who divorced in 1970, was the author of a hard-core pornographic autobiography published in San Diego in 1968 by Greenleaf Classics under the pseudonym Bob Greene.

In a surviving portion of an autobiographical manuscript, Mr Davis confirms that he was the author of Sex Rebel: Black after a reader had noticed the “similarities in style and phraseology” between the pornographic work and his poetry.

“I could not then truthfully deny that this book, which came out in 1968 as a Greenleaf Classic, was mine.” In the introduction to Sex Rebel, Mr Davis (writing as Greene) explains that although he has “changed names and identities…all incidents I have described have been taken from actual experiences”.

He stated that “under certain circumstances I am bisexual” and that he was “ a voyeur and an exhibitionist” who was “occasionally mildly interested in sado-masochism”, adding: “I have often wished I had two penises to enjoy simultaneously the double – but different – sensations of oral and genital copulation.”

The book, which closely tracks Mr Davis’s life in Chicago and Hawaii and the fact that his first wife was black and his second white, describes in lurid detail a series of shockingly sordid sexual encounters, often involving group sex.

One chapter concerns the seduction by Mr Davis and his first wife of a 13-year-old girl called Anne. Mr Davis wrote that it was the girl who had suggested he had sex with her. “I’m not one to go in for Lolitas. Usually I’d rather not bed a babe under 20.

“But there are exceptions. I didn’t want to disappoint the trusting child. At her still-impressionistic age, a rejection might be traumatic, could even cripple her sexually for life.”

I’m a Republican and was raised going to Church every Sunday (even on vacation) and choir practice every Tuesday night.

Trust me, Christians kiss before they are 17 and many families end up with at least one teen pregnancy from their children.

My best friend is an Episcopal Priest’s daughter who had an abortion with one man, got pregnant and planned a wedding, lost that baby but still got married. She is now the mother of a 19 year old still married to the same husband. She has been a wonderful mother.

When I was growing up abortion was illegal, pre-marital pregnancies were still something to be ashamed of (and daughters FORCED to put their babies up for adoption – never allowed to be able to choose to keep them) but thankfully that thinking was starting to go the way of the DoDo bird, and sex was far from openly discusssed like it is now. And that changed! And I’m grateful for that.

Children are not a punishment, EVER. They are a blessing and Pro-Choice definitely means Choice whether to keep the baby or not. I am happy Bristol has decided to keep her baby! Pro-Choice encompasses also keeping a baby or willingly putting it up for adoption, not just having an abortion.

America has come along way since in the last 50+ years. We don’t have the same taboos, so Bristol’s pregnancy should be a non-issue today, but unfortunately some if not all of Obama’s supporters seem to think it’s still the Middle Ages. Happily, that’s not the case!!! We old Democrats should be proud of that fact, most of us fought for women’s rights enjoyed by these young kids today.

The Palin family is facing the same issues the rest of us working parents face. That makes her more human. And I respect them for that even more.

Yes, there are parents who would even today disown their pregnant daughters or force them to give up their babies, and those families are usually the ones where some type of intervention should be taking place anyway. Birth control has been known to fail. It’s never been 100% effective, more like 99%. Even women who are on birth control have gotten pregnant. It’s a fact of life. I won’t touch abstinence only, because before abstinence only my own mother was preaching it! She was a good woman but there was no talk about birth control from her. That was a no-no subject as was talking about sex.

There must have been some real pain in this for them and they are trying to do the most loving thing. That is hard for every family. If the distinction is made that evolution is a scientific theory and creationism or intelligent design are “beliefs” which are not science since they are not about systematic inquiry and proof, then I think ok. Epistemology is a valid area of inquiry and learning.

At 17, you’re in a holding pattern waiting to become legal. Americans have created a society where teens are openly sexually active. What? You think birth control is going to take care of everything? Birth control often fails. And some girls want to become moms as soon as they can. I personally don’t recommend it, but at 17 going on 18, there’s not a whole lot a parent can do in this permissive climate with a girl who longing for a baby and not interested in school and career.

This is where feminism failed. It failed to take into account the natural urges of females and males and instead was determined to push an agenda based on the wonders of the modern independent working women. Some women just want to be moms, have a husband and live a family centered life.

I am from Alaska. We live in the same town as Palin’s family. You guys have no idea what new information will be surfacing soon about Governor Palin. We like the family but they have a lot of skeletons in their closet. The McCain people are here now trying to find out everything and trying to intimidate people not to talk. I am a young woman, a few years older than Bristol, and I’ve recently moved to the state of Alaska. I think it is the obligation of parents to support their children in such matters, and though it may have not been ideal timing, I hope that Bristol is happy with her decision…its a little too late to not be happy about it!

However, her mother, Sarah Palin has made statements that if her daughters ever became pregnant as minors (in the state of Alaska you need parent permission to get an abortion if you are under 18) even in the case of rape, she would choose life and not sign for any abortion.

I admire women who have children in difficult circumstances, but I do not believe their is shame in seeking a different path for yourself. Children are wonderful and human life should be treasured, but it is also a very personal and permanent matter, that I hope Bristol chose for herself. Bristol is 17 years old, and I hope the decision to have her child was not forced by her mother.

There is just a lot of hypocrisy in the idea, that a child is not old enough to decide NOT to be a parent, therefor we must force them to do the right thing and BECOME a parent…I love babies, and hope to have one someday myself, however I know that when I was a teenager my mother would never have FORCED that bravery on me. I hope this was Bristol’s own decision. I also hope that she was involved in the conversations and decision making process of her family entering the national spotlight at this fragile time.

In this country, there are many different political views, none with absolute truth. It is important to respect the views of others when holding executive office. That would entail that you respect the opinion of your daughter. I’ve also believed that involving the abolishment of abortion in politics comes to close to violating the separation of church and state. There are many different types of families, circumstances, and lives. The truth of the matter is, that whether its a choice you would make or not, abortion has been a constant in various human cultures throughout time. Be it through herbs or ancient practices, there have been women who have controlled their reproduction in the endless and various circumstances that inevitably arise in populations of human beings, for thousands of years. There are Chinese records of royal concubines who have had abortions. Ancient Japanese, southeast Asian, Greek, and Egyptian records all show the social acceptance of abortions in dangerous health and poor situational pregnancies. This is not a dark part of history, it was just the first records shown. The aspect that has not changed about it, is that it is a personal and often secretive thing…probably not often involving the opinions of men and their knowledge of its occurrence.

To conclude, I hope that BRISTOL decided to carry this baby, in the bravery and sacrifices it will entail.

I am a 46 year old and have a 17 year old daughter, smart and with bright future. She will be graduating and going to college next year. Having a teenager is a challenge, it is never a smooth ride. You want the best for them and hope that they make the right choice in life. I teach her abstinence and the danger of transmitted desease out there. I also told her that if she gets pregnant, I will never be ashamed of her and I will love her and the baby. This does not mean that I want her to go out there and get pregnant or have sex. Alyssa, I also believe comprehensive sex education should be offered in public schools as an optional class. It is not something which should be required against the wishes of parents. There is a paradox in your comment IMO. Who are the people who produce the movies you have referenced and why do they push the envelope so far to attract children? These aren’t aimed at adults. At least, most adults prefer something more cerebral. I have always considered myself a liberal, but there are days I am thankful my children are grown and worry about my granddaughters. I am a 46 year old and have a 17 year old daughter, smart and with bright future. She will be graduating and going to college next year. Having a teenager is a challenge, it is never a smooth ride.

You want the best for them and hope that they make the right choice in life. I teach her abstinence and the danger of transmitted desease out there.

I also told her that if she gets pregnant, I will never be ashamed of her and I will love her and the baby. This does not mean that I want her to go out there and get pregnant or have sex. Babies are god gifts to us. I am happy for the Palins.

Whats to judge? The palins seem to be very normal down to earth real americans facing many of the same real challanges we all face as americans and families daily.

I hate to break the news to the Obama’s but “have you seen the price of arugula” is not what we discuss at our dinner table either.

Sarah Palin may not espouse every view that i do as a no-longer-democrat, but she has conviction, integrity and a down to earth demeaner and honesty that makes me very comfortable with her as McCain’s choice.
