There are two angles to this.

1. People of the ‘world’ understandably have an interest in what happens in the US. Not because they’re inclined to be this way but because the US has a bad and nasty habit in interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries.

The list of interventions the US governments are guilty of is nearly endless. There is nothing to debate here. All countries build alliances but the US seem to think they can patrol the world. All according to, for example, William Kristol. They seem to think other people want the misery the people in the US have, that this is somehow something other people attain to. What utter rubbish.

2. The people of the world do not see things under the same microscope as people back home in the US who follow political campaigns very closely. Moreover: most ‘people of the world’ are hamstrung by linguistic issues: they simply don’t understand ‘English’ well enough to follow what’s going on.

OK, there are more than two issues. I lied.

3. The ‘media of the world’ are selective. News about political developments in the US might reach the first page but it’s hardly ever the top story. And the time devoted to such news is severely limited. It’s prioritised away for other ‘local’ stories such as Sally’s cat that ran up into a tree so the fire department had to rescue it – PICTURES.

4. Journalists are cheap today. We all know the US MSM are a bag of shit but there’s the same trouble in other countries. There are any number of European tabloids for example that do nothing but check the Daily Mail, TMZ, and the National Enquirer all day long and publish stupid 200 word ‘blog’ articles about what they find – and they attempt to pass it off as ‘journalism’, as ‘reporting’.

5. Resources to cover US political elections are limited. Of a huge number of staff perhaps only two or one are given time to check up on what happens in the US. These people keep watching the clock. For at 5:00 PM they get to go home. They don’t try to make an effort and they are absolutely not about ‘investigative journalism’.

And so forth. It’s perfectly understandable, the above BBC story, considering the way the US MSM have been in the tank for Obama all along. Because that’s what they hear and read – and consequently that’s what they pass on to their readers.

Consider the ordinary grunt, holding down a 9-5 job, sitting on the commuter train in the evening, holding the evening tabloid, waiting to get home. Sitting in a train thousands of miles from Kentucky, Dayton, Minneapolis. It’s been a hard day at work; dinner awaits as does its preparation. As does dealing with the kids. As does thinking about whether there’s anything good on the TV. Or if tonight’s the night for a new ‘joyride’. Do you think these people are going to get involved in researching the real truth about this campaign?

That being said: the BBC are known to swim in funny tanks at times. And so I would immediately suspect this whole BBC poll thing was something Axelrod somehow engineered.

That being said: do not tell people outside the US this election is the business only of the people of the US and to fuck off. It’s a planet – a global village – and the US won’t ‘fuck off’ when it comes to doing a lot worse than merely expressing an opinion about someone else’s election campaign.

These people express opinions; people in the US vote to drop bombs.

No, the allocation of Electoral Votes is the same as 2004.

The writer might be assuming that Iowa (7) and New Mexico (5) are in the bag for Zerobama, bringing his “starting” number 264.

A week ago, I would have more or less agreed with this, especially regarding Iowa, but looking at the latest polling trends, I don’t think Barry can count on any 2004 swing states as sure things.

I remembered the US had to bail Europe out in WWII when one of their own went berserk. Post war Europe has a long history of incubating terrorist organizations (think Red Brigade who kidnapped and murdered Aldo Moro).
