Only In South Carolina?

Recently, South Carolina has been in the news for our “wacky” politics, especially amid allegations of impropriety on behalf of Rep. Nikki Haley. Haley is now in a runoff for Republican candidate for Governor by two men, one of whom worked for her competitor. Despite these allegations, and an upcoming run-off (June 22nd), she is widely expected to win.

But the one about whom you may NOT have heard is the Democratic nominee for US Senate, set to face Senator Jim DeMint. I guess with this story, we really do have to accept and acknowledge that we have some whacked out politics in this state. This is a good one.

So, here’s the thing. Okay. The guy who won, Alvin Greene, raised not one dime, had no campaign website, and STILL beat a 4 time state official for the shot to go against Senator DeMint. There is just one tiny little problem with him, though, as this article highlights, S.C. Dems Ask Senate Nominee To Withdraw After Felony Charge. Oh, oops:

Less than 24 hours after Alvin Greene’s surprise win in the South Carolina Democratic Senate primary, the state party has asked him to withdraw from the race because of a pending felony charge.

“Today I spoke with Alvin Greene, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, and asked him to withdraw from the race,” Carol Fowler, chairwoman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, said in a statement.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Greene is facing felony charges for displaying pornographic pictures to a University of South Carolina student.

Fowler said she didn’t take her decision “lightly.”

“I believe strongly that the Democratic voters of this state have the right to select our nominee,” she said.

“But this new information about Mr. Greene would certainly have affected the decisions of many of those voters.”

The party said that as of Wednesday afternoon it had not received a response from Greene.

I don’t know about you, but for me, it begs the question: how did Greene even get on the ballot? Great that Fowler is stepping in now, but, seriously – how did he even get on the ballot? I hope someone knows, because he ain’t talking:

The candidate could not be reached for comment. He declined to comment on the charges to the AP.

Greene posted bond after his arrest in November for showing the obscene Internet photos to the young woman, according to the report. Though Greene has yet to enter a plea or be indicted, if convicted, he could be imprisoned for up to five years.

In an earlier interview with The Ballot Box, Greene declined to comment about his pending charges, but admitted he was surprised with the results of Tuesday’s vote. At the time of the interview, the party had not called for his resignation.

He said his chances against Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) were good because “this is a dire time in South Carolina and the U.S.”

Greene stunned observers Tuesday when he won the nomination. He raised no money and put up no campaign website but beat former four-term state lawmaker Vic Rawl 59 percent to 41. (Eden Stiffman)

I suppose one could look at this as knowing about his crime BEFORE he got into office, so it would not be a big surprise to anyone…Ahem. Seriously, though, why did people give this man a vote when they knew so little about him? That is just a tad problematic.

Oh, these wacky, wacky South Cackalackians, right? Right. Still, I’d sure like to know how the hell he even got on the ballot. Maybe Carol Fowler can answer that question for us.

    LOL: Clyburn opines:

“House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) articulated the suspicion of many South Carolina Democrats this morning by suggesting that the state’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary victor Alvin Greene was a “plant.” Greene, who is unemployed and lives with his mother, was the come-from-nowhere winner Tuesday after paying $10,400 to register as a candidate and then seemingly disappearing from view . . . “

  • Cindy

Oh, Rev. Amy—-My gosh–that is indeed wacky! But do not fear……..as long as there’s my native state, Louisiana, y’all will never get the “wackiest state in the Union” prize.
To wit: Louisiana bumper sticker when Klansman David Duke was running against felon Edwin Edwards in the gubernatorial race:
    “Vote For the Crook–It’s Important!”

  • oowawa

Article in Newsweek mentions that Greene was a veteran, but cites ABC that he was “kicked out of the Army.”

  • ~~JustMe~~

Sounds like this guy fits in really well with the rest of the people in government who like to bend the rules. Pay to Play. 5 minutes of fame, rip off the American voter ask for a refund and walk away! I guess the taxpayers will get stuck with any outstanding bills that need paying. What’s new?

  • sowsear

Someone must have voted for him..unless they use the Chicago method of counting ballots.
    Or the Uncle Donald method…
Do you remember how Donald Duck used to divide up stuff with his nephews? One for Donald, one for Huey, one for Donald, one for Dewey, one for Donald, one for Louie, one for Donald…

  • sowsear

  • oowawa

I wonder how much it is going to cost the Democratic Party to get Greene to withdraw from the race . . .

  • susiepuma

Seems to me that this guy will fit in right well with the rest of the crooks currently occupying prominent positions in DC – turbotax timmy?, rangel? oh the list just goes on and on ……………………….. birds of a feather ya know

  • lorac

Besides the question of how did officials allow him on the ballot, there is the question of why did people vote for him.  The guy didn’t campaign, didn’t present his ideas.

Once again, people voted for an unknown candidate.

  • POdVet

I see many are trying to claim he was a plant by the GOP. But based on the votes cast I don’t buy that at all. I’d like to know if SEIU endorsed Rawl or Greene!

  • Yttik

Okay, I think this is some hilarious stuff! It’s just too funny that he didn’t even really run and he got selected anyway.

I’m not defending him, I’m not even interested in excusing his behavior, but I do want more details about this alleged, still uncharged felony. Was he a teacher? There’s something they’re not telling us in this story because as sleezy as it is, men don’t get arrested for showing pornography to women and they sure don’t get charged with a felony. He had to have been stalking her or she was his student, something to explain these charges.

  • oowawa

Yep–someone did vote for him–over 100,000 people–59% of the vote.

  • sowsear

That’s the first thing my husband said…he’s negotiating. If he is a Republican plant, however, he’s already under contract…

  • ~~JustMe~~

He turned up with his long form birth certificate the $10,400 to register and was good to go! What more can we ask for? ;)

  • sowsear

In NYS to get on a ballot, you have to have a certain number of people sign your petition…seems like a good idea.

  • oowawa

He had his long form birth certificate? That’s more than we can ask for!

  • oowawa

I think that he planted himself.  Every dog has his day, and even the losers get lucky sometimes.  Now he can cash in his lottery ticket . . .

  • Michelle from the Resistance

His campaign slogan is “Let’s get South Carolina back to work.”

So simple yet so effective. “The best script you’ll ever read” has never worked in my endeavors. I wish Hollywood was in SC.

  • Cindy

oowawa—money is NEVER a problem in the Democratic party. He could name his price……..just ask our esteemed pricey President,
     ”The $Price$ of Peace”

  • Onofre’s arm

Ummm, are y’all playing a joke on me? Where’s the hidden camera? Or are y’all just waiting for someone politically incorrect like me to point out that the guy is BLACK! HELLO! All a Democrat candidate in SC needs in his resume is proof of high melanin content in his skin to get an automatic majority of votes.

Come on now, you guys are busted, the prank is revealed.

  • jwrjr

Maybe the voters of SC recognize the difference between “felony charge” (which there is) and “felony indictment” (which there is not)?

  • sowsear

I read that he was a college graduate…but kicked out of the army, unemployed, stealth candidate, charged with a felony…doesn’t add up. His long form birth certificate must have been signed by someone big in Hawaii… or maybe in Kenya…

  • ~~JustMe~~

I was rubbing it in LOL I have no idea if he had it or not. However, I find this is more than bizarre I really find it pretty scary what goes on running for office. The system, leaves the door wide open for this type of incident to take place! No wonder where in the shape we are in. Mind-blowing!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

ROTFLMAO – you got me there, Cindy!  You’re right – LA is definitely the winner of that title.

But besides SC, you have IL and all of the shenanigans going on there (Blago trial anyone?), so LA better watch out.  There’s some major wackiness afoot!

  • Yttik

This is all I can find:

Records indicate Greene showed photos to a woman and talked about going to her room at a university dorm.

    http://motherjones.com/mojo/2010/06/ap-alvin-greene-facing-felony-charge

Uh, that’s sleezy, but still not a felony. Where’s the details?

  • sowsear

Is it any different than  BO’s latest methods for stacking the ballots?

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Oh good grief.  I so, so wish Clyburn would be retired, especially since he is my Congressman.  He of the Pork Club, giving prime projects to family members…

A plant.  Okay.  So, how does that explain the big win exactly?

  • Cindy

Onofre—-Unfortunately, Mr. Allen Funt is no longer with us…so it’s not a joke!

  • susiepuma

O/T – Holy shit – the Mexican army is now massed at our border in Texas – here comes the next war – what the hell is going on now?

Fuck holder and his fuckin’ ‘bond’ between the US and Mexico – there’s no bond – just illegal aliens sneaking over the open border

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

See, that’s what I’m saying.  We don’t even have to wait for him to actually get into office, and then have his misdeeds exposed.  We already know.  Whee!!!!

Lorac, that’s my question, too – why in the world did anyone vote for this guy?  Kinda makes you rethink that whole “one person, one vote” – oh, wait – the DNC already did that, too, in 2008…

  • POdVet

He was charged with Obscenity. South Carolina still has sodomy laws on the books even though they are unenforceable. Oral sex is illegal in SC also. Stupid yes, and a law I violated several times when I was stationed there…But still on the books.

  • Yttik

It is kind of funny. This guy is more of an empty suit then the President was. They’re calling him the “Mystery Man of SC.”

Why did you vote for Alvin Greene? Alvin Greene who?? I was just filling in little boxes on my ballot and I liked the way his name sounded.

  • sowsear

But where did he get more than $10K? Supposedly illegal if he didn’t use his own money.

  • oowawa

Well, we were trying to sidestep that observation, Oa, as we do not want to be labeled as R-worders.  However, the pics I posted do suggest a difference in complexion . . .

And yes, Oa, we were waiting for someone “politically incorrect” like you to come along . . .

They had more info on Fox news about the 15 y/o Mexican teen killed earlier by the border patrol.  Remember it was said that he was a kid playing games by jumping across the border and jumping back, no big deal?  The news said he was wanted here for human and drug smuggling, and that he has been deported 5 times.

15 years old and deported 5 times already??  That’s proof right there we need to secure our borders if a teenager has managed to make it to America 5 times already.  I see that illegal aliens in Arizona are fleeing the state ahead of the new law being implemented:

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-06-08-immigration_N.htm

I guess that means it’s working.  Also, the Houston Chronicle did a story yesterday about the changes some detention centers are going to make that hold illegal immigrants to make their life better.  Here are some of the proposed changes:

    •  Eliminating lockdowns and lights-out for low-risk detainees.
    •  Allowing visitors to stay as long as they like in a 12-hour period.
    •  Providing a unit manger so detainees have someone to report problems to other than the guard.
    •  Allowing low-risk detainees to wear their own clothing or other non-penal attire.
    •  Providing e-mail access and Internet-based free phone service.

Oh yes, bingo, dance classes, tutoring, computer training, outdoor recreation and weekend continental breakfasts too.

“Rosenberg said some of the changes, like new flower baskets, may seem small, but they will combine with the bigger changes to make a difference in the daily lives of detainees. “Taken together they will go some way to making this system less penal,” she said.”

Oh yah right, because we wouldn’t want LAW BREAKERS to actually have to suffer for breaking the law.

Rev. Amy, thanks for the post.  It made me laugh and today I need that.  Allow me to try and return the favor.  In Texas we have our own strange brand of politics.  Our longest serving State Treasurer was– drum roll please– Jesse James (1941-1977).

Then there was Reagan Brown, known for his “racial insensitivity”, who tried to redeem his image.  At a campaign speech (unfortunately on videotape) he decided to pay tribute to George Washington Carver.  Intending to say, “that great Black educator”, he slipped on the last word and said– another drum roll please–  “that great Black ni—-”.  The next day his press secretary responded to the furor by explaining that ”he had the flu.”

Jesse James and Reagan Brown were elected and re-elected repeatedly.

I just listened to Greene interviewed by Shep Smith.  Incredible.  The man can’t complete a full sentence without stumbling, mumbling and stepping all over his own words.  He refused to speak about the felony charge and his explanation about his military career–honorably discharged but involuntary–didn’t even make sense beyond the last few words “government needs to be changed.”

What???  This man is running for the US Senate?  And got tons of votes?  I’m sorry, Amy.  I know South Carolina is your home.  But you’re going to take the prize from New Jersey [my native state] for sleazy politics if this keeps up.  8-)

I think that, particularly this year, there are a lot of people who will vote for an unknown over any professional politician.  I could see this happening quite easily. susie, Didn’t she also get into trouble when she said Sarah Palin was chosen to run for VP simply because she didn’t have an abortion?  Her office phone number was posted online and I called (VM box was full for a while) and left her a scathing message; I believe she later apologized but I might be wrong about that…maybe a backhanded apology.

I just saw the Democrat’s candidate on Fox…usually don’t stay for Sheppard but wanted to see what Greene had to say.  He did say he went around the state and met with the public.  This is another example of how the Dims vet their candidates and I would bet that the public he met were in Black meetings…churches?  When these racists have a choice they are going to vote for the Black man.  Witness the idiot, Hank Johnson, in GA who was very afraid Guam would tip over.  My cousin says he will never be voted out by his district because he follows orders…compared him to Pelousy’s job security in SF.  Truly sad.

Editor Tina Brown Slams Female GOP
    Primary Winners: These ‘Wingnuts’

Former New Yorker editor Tina Brown appeared on Thursday’s Good Morning America to deride the mostly Republican women who won primaries on Tuesday as “wingnuts” and to sneer that they represent a “blow to feminism.” GMA’s “Morning Mix” segment featured Brown and journalist Catherine Crier, part of a panel that usually includes reporters agreeing with each other over liberal talking points. After Stephanopoulos recited the numerous women who won nominations on June 8, the current Daily Beast editor dismissed, “…The only trouble with this one is, it almost feels as if all these women winning are kind of a

Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (leaders of women’s suffrage) were all Republicans as well as Sandra Day O’conner (first female supreme court justice).

These were the trail blazers and quite possibly “wingnuts” back in the day.

Conservative women are strong, articulate, study the issues, don’t ride other’s coat tails, love their country and feel compelled to make the community better not by a government program, but by the sweat of their own brow.

I refuse to let someone’s narrow view define what a modern woman should be. How intolerant and small of the so called progressives.

There is more to this than meets the eye and also LESS.

The felony charge is related to an alleged incident where Greene was in the Univerisy of South Carolina (the other USC) computer lab.

From Fox News: “Camille McCoy, a chemistry student from Sumerville, reportedly told police that a man, whom she later identified as Greene, approached her on Nov. 12 in an on-campus computer lab at the University of South Carolina and showed her dozens of pornographic images from a computer.”

“Then he just looked at me and said, ‘Let’s just go back to your room now,’” McCoy told Charleston, S.C. television station WSCS.

Yes that is illegal in SC, but not most other states.

The list of SC Obsenity laws are here: http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t16c015.htm Scroll down for the list.

He won the Senate primary because:
He did not run a campaign, but neither did his opponent.
His opponent was a little known former state assemblyman, and unknown outside his former district.
Appearing first alphabetically on the ballot, Alvin Green chalked many more votes than Vic Rawl. (Poly Sci 101)

He lives with his Father, and apparently had the 10 large saved up – very plausible.

South Carolina prohibits convicted felons from running for state office, but not for federal office (he has not been convicted of anything).

If he does not drop out (the dem party cannot force him out) the U.S. House or Senate can vote to expel or not seat him if he wins election in November. How likely is that? He fits right in with those alleged morals.

Alvin Green is not a total dummy. He has a Political Science degree from USC.

He was discharged from the Army after a 13 year career. He had not completed the final 6 months of his obligation, but was honerably discharged.

“The Army did not disclose the reason for his discharge because of Privacy Act rules. It confirmed that Greene was awarded several service medals and ribbons, including an Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon.”

If I were this young man I would hire an attorney to get the young woman to drop the charges, or have them reduced, depending on what actually occured. Offer restitution, community service, and plea the case down to a wrist slap at most. The Dems will fight that. That may be difficult because of the politics involved.

I do not think he should drop out of the race, and the Law is on his side. Unless there is more that is unknown today. I doubt it, because the Democrats are relentlessly trying to dig up dirt.

Face it, the Democrats are not bothered that Alvin Green may be a sleezy guy. What bothers them is that he is not their sleezy guy.

    RRRA:

Another essay of yours that makes me want to grab someone and shake them back into this plane of existence. Why on earth would anyone vote for someone so obviously lacking in even the most basic of skills–the ability to communicate clearly. Repetetive phrases taken from memory and spoken merely to “convince” the electorate of one’s adequacy are not arguments but chants. If this is what we have to look forward to in future election cycles, then we are truly adrift without boat or paddle. Wow.

  • Docelder

I think they thought they had heard the name before. A lot of companies do stuff like that when branding… name something so that people think they have heard of it before… without stepping on somebody else’s marks of course. For example when FedEX started up, they named if “federal” express implying some officiality without saying so as they were competing on some level with the post office. I still think people read “Al Green” and thought they had heard of him before. Actually campaigning would have hurt him as people would realize he isn’t the one they were thinking of. I still think it’s a test balloon. I look for more of these in “low information” voter districts.

  • ~~JustMe~~

BTW did you all hear the American that was on trial in Italy for murder, some guy has come forward to say it was his brother that killed the girl?

  • Ferd Berfle

In thinking about our elections and the boneheads we always seem to be forced to choose between, I am stunned that this country has moved far away from competence as any sort of criterion for continued employement (in any capacity). Multinational corporations don’t care; the government doesn’t care; and apparently, the electorate in this country doesn’t care. My father, who was a right-of-way Attorney, worked for the state of Oklahoma for 37 years to 1978. Every year he was re-evaluated in terms of his performance FOR the position he served in. He had to prove he was on top of his game or he was out. His supervisor had the same test as did his peers. Continued employment was based on the ability to actually perform the job and not on irrelevant items such as whether or not he played golf with the other “boys”.

Even in the company I work for, which is a great company, has problems with performance evaluations for their workers, particularly since it does do about 30% of its bookings for the government and has to meet a lot of insubstantial requirements to continue work. The evaluations become completely nebulous as irrelevant items such as “performs work safely” is a prime criterion. Let’s see, I didn’t injure myself at any time during the year so why even look at such nonsense unless I did? The data is already there–move on to the skills brought to the position or the attention to detail or the ability to perform in a stressful environment. Nope, safety is paramount because it places my job equal on a par with any other in the company, even when such considerations have no bearing on my position.

We’re looking at the wrong attributes and making decisions on them.

  • Ferd Berfle

I look for more of these in “low information” voter districts.

Brigham Young University Law Review, 2003 by Andrea Steinacker, on Felony disenfranchisement laws :

State law regarding whether a convicted felon can run for office varies widely. However, the states can be grouped according to essential characteristics.
    1. States that do not deny the right to hold office
Some states essentially do not bar convicted felons from running for office. For example, New York disenfranchises inmates and parolees, but the law does not pose any requirement that a candidate have a clean criminal record. Kansas law allows for forfeiture of public office upon conviction but does not explicitly preclude convicted felons from running. Other states included in this category are Vermont, Oregon, Tennessee, and Massachusetts.
    2. States that automatically restore the right to hold office
Three states simply require that the person’s sentence be completed before running for office. Hawaii law states, “A person sentenced for a felony, from the time of the person’s sentence until the person’s final discharge, may not . . . [b]ecome a candidate for or hold public office.” The other two states that automatically restore the right to hold office once a person’s sentence is completed are Montana and North Dakota. These states essentially grant a convicted felon the right to run for office immediately upon completion of the sentence.
    3. States that only restore the right to hold office after restoration of civil rights
Eleven states require that in order to run for office, a felon must have received a pardon or otherwise have had his civil rights restored. For example, the Florida constitution states, “No person convicted of a felony . . . shall be qualified to vote or hold office until restoration of civil rights . . . .” Other states in this category include Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin. Procedures for having civil rights restored vary from state to state.
    4. States that link qualification for office to voter qualifications
Seventeen states and the District of Columbia link the right to run for office directly to the right to vote. Thus, if the right to vote is automatically restored, so is the right to run for office. Maine, for example, requires the candidate to be a registered voter, but since inmates can vote, no one convicted of a felony is barred from running for office. Some states, on the other hand, do not automatically restore the right to vote. Arizona requires a candidate to be a qualified elector (voter), and a convicted felon in Arizona must go through certain procedures to have his right to vote restored. Other states linking qualification for office to voter qualifications include Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. In these states, the right to run for public office depends on whether the convicted felon is restored the right to vote.
    5. States with a waiting period
Five states add additional time requirements. Georgia, for example, requires a felon to have his civil rights restored and ten years to pass since the completion of the sentence. South Carolina law states that a felon cannot run for office until pardoned or until fifteen years after the completion of the sentence. Louisiana and Oklahoma have similar provisions. In Rhode Island, a felon cannot run for office until three years after the completion of the sentence, including probation and parole.
    6. States that deny convicted felons the right to hold office
Five states simply deny convicted felons the right to hold office. These states include Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. These states do not provide restoration of the right to hold office even if the right to vote is restored.
    7. Other states
The final three states do not fall into any of the above categories. New Hampshire and West Virginia only deny the right to hold office to those convicted of bribery or treason in obtaining office. South Dakota law is the most unique; it pertains only to a potential candidate who has been convicted of an “infamous crime,” and that convict merely needs to have “accounted for and paid over, according to law, all such moneys due from him.”

Oh, yeah, and the “supports diversity” evaluation. I always reply that I support diversity in all its forms so long as the diversity is competent. Incompetent diversity is still only incompetence ignored.

OMG, I just realized that the Horizon support team got their form letter from a “Mad Libs” book.

I hope Sen. DeMint is up to the challenge. :-P

What’s wrong with a Green “plant”?
    ==============
Nothing so long as the candidate possesses an IQ greater than that of any other fellow member of the plant kingdom. Greene doesn’t.

  • getfitnow

Talking about Mr. Greene or That One or both?

  • jbjd

R3A, wordpress is down; plus, my post was delayed several hours because workers were fixing the floor from the flood; but you will LOVE this post.  Tease:  CAROL FOWLER is CRYING “FOUL” in SOUTH CAROLINA (so Why Can’t I Stop Smiling?)  This Alvin Greene guy is ‘right out of central casting.’

How did he get elected? He seems to have the people’s welfare in mind.

Yes, I am sure he never brought that sledge hammer to build a shed. My God, what the border patrol have to deal with daily!! Not Good.

  • sowsear

We won’t be sure for awhile, but that guy in GA worried that Guam is going to tip over may have the edge here.

  • sowsear

Al’s degree is in Political Science…that’s about right, wouldn’t you say?

  • Docelder

Maybe they met at Harvard. 8-)

  • sowsear

Are you near the rising water, Cindy and Susiepuma?

  • Docelder

There’s your Captain Kickass. Barky is the sidekicker.

  • Scdemo

Set Up! We all know it.  Vic Rawl is a career civil servant and we would be better off with a pragmatistic than a ideolog, also somebody call your friends at lexington medical center and ask what Nimrata’s (yes that’s her real name)  nick name was around there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark

“how did Greene even get on the ballot?”

How did Obama get on the ballot?  20 years in Wright’s racist black liberation theology church should disqualify anyone.

Oh, I forgot, this is sooooo historic.

  • Docelder

I know, but being smart has gone out of style for these politicians. They don’t write the laws now… lobbyists do. They just have to vote. For democrats it’s easy, they are told how to vote. They just show up, get paid and it’s all good. No work required and the benefits are out of this world. Why not?

  • Mark

This could not be in a better state unless it were Arizona.  The libs have been trashing, hating, and boycotting the state of Arizonia.  Then the moronic libs turned to South Carolina to unleash their hate.  This embarrassment should muzzle the libs bigoted mouths about South Carolina.

While the libs hold every third world nutjob county in high esteem they have been picking apart the people of the US and their states.  The libs may start WW III, these morons are dumb enough to do it.

  • sowsear

Mr. Greene is a college graduate, I’ll have you know.

  • Mark

How the hell does one interview this guy without laughing?  I give that reporter a lot of credit, I almost busted my gut.

And the libs have the audacity to call Sarah Palin stupid.    This supports the conclusion that the libs are dolts.

  • sowsear

No, probably started out together at Columbia..roommates. That’s why no one remembers them.

  • sowsear

Or maybe they thought he was the basketball coach at Coastal Carolina, Alvin Greene.
    Ohooo, that Alvin Greene.

  • Onofre’s arm

I suppose it could be worse. He could have been speaking Gullah, good luck trying to understand THAT language.

  • ~~JustMe~~

    Sounds intersting!

  • Lorie

People need do a little more investigation before voting for a candidate. WTF. NO ONE knew of his background?????

Here’s the REAL Al Green – pne of my favorite artists in high school and college.  Unfortunately I heard him about 10 years ago on NPR, and he sounded like a boxer who had had his head beaten too many times…. sad…

  • BuzzLatte

You mean Carol Fowler of the didn’t really properly submit Obama’s name for the SC ballot episode, Carol Fowler?

So that Kathy Whatever had to validate and sign the cert. papers, Carol Fowler?

    MmmmmMmmmMmmMmmmMmmm

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

I heard back from NOAA. They said they would pass along my suggestion to BP.

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

I think this guy is legit. I listened to him speak, and he is obviously uncomfortable and not polished in front of a camera. But, he gives it his best OTJ learning shot.

I did not hear a lot of umms and aahhhs and stuh stuh stuh stuttering like another person whose on camera presence we are familiar with.

    this from Newsweek:
Voters casting their lot in favor of someone they’ve never heard of is actually fairly common in low-key races, political scientists say, and the race to compete against a strong and well-funded Republican incumbent like DeMint qualifies as low-key. It’s also not as rare as one might think for obscure candidates to spend little to no money on their campaigns. Casino pit boss Robert Tingle spent so little in his doomed 2008 challenge to Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed that he’s not even listed in the Federal Election Commission’s campaign-finance database. “Almost every year there are one or two Senate challengers who raise no money,” says Alan Abramowitz, professor of political science at Emory University.

Greene is a rarity but not unheard of. His win speaks more about the weakness of his opponent.

He is just a regular guy and sounds like one. If I were him I’d go back to the Alma Mater and try to get help with being in front of the camera. Polish the campaign platform, issues and talking points. But keep it real simple so it is easy to get out in front of the camera.

Most of us would sound like bumbling fools in front of a Camera for the first time too.

He’s a total Newbie. If it were not for his porn indiscression Alvin Greene could be refreshing.

  • Cindy

lorac—you’re so funny!  yeah, he’s a good ‘un!

Kathy Hensley.  And she’s in there!

  • Onofre’s arm

If name recognition was the reason for Greene’s victory, then Vic Rawl should have changed his name to Lou Rawls and made it a REAL contest.

  • Cindy

Onofre—you may be on to something there…. and conversely, perhaps Marvin Gaye’s last name is what kept him from ever considering a serious bid for the White House.
(I heard that thru the grapevine)

Lou Rawls is dead.  And before he died, he was arrested for domestic abuse.

Hi Rev. Amy. This is so bizarre. I hope someone will be able to give an update? There are so many things no making any sense except it’s clear there is a con of some sort. My admiration for your writing is undimished, but the comments (some) are unnerving given the lack of compassion. Showing the photo of a dead 15yr followed by pathetic attempts at wit makes me wonder if group think has infected those who post here. Excuse the reference, but this is not the NQ I knew and loved. And are there any hystorians here with some knowledge of TX history who would be willing to point out Texas was actually part of Mexico until Manifest Destiny became the policy of the day. Santa Anna won his victory at the Alamo and paid dearly at San Jacinto in no less brutal fashion. TX history books tell the story of Francisco “Pancho” Villa, and while it’s true the US government put a price on his head, it was only after the US refused to live up to it’s agreement to support his revolution he began to rob banks in Texas. He wanted the same freedom for his county we want for ours and turned to find a knife in his back. Most of the undocument worker are here to escape poverty Americans can’t begin to undertand. The drug  traffic is something apart and should not be loaded onto the backs of people who only want the bare necessities for the survival of their families. TY for the article. I needed  the laugh and very courious about the details. Thank you, Elise

  • getfitnow

I’ve seen 3 clips of Mr. Greene, and what’s eery beside his election is the man’s expression NEVER changes! Not an ounce of animation. It’s unbelievable—like his election ;) !

  • getfitnow

An “undocumented worker” who can’t prove who he is and is here LEGALLY, is breaking the law.

BTW, if I show up at work and there’s a security rule of flashing ID for entry, I’m undocumented. If I’m a foreigner (and for any reason) breech a country’s immigration laws, I’m an ILLEGAL ALIEN. >:o

  • glennmcgahee

This is no problem. Clyburn is probably on the phone with oBAMA deciding what job in the Administration to offer Greene.

  • PssttCmere

If anyone knows about underhandedness, it would be Clyburn!!!

“Say What You Will….It Feels So Good”

  • Trixta

Absolutely, oowawa!  He’s a plant of some kind.

  • Trixta

I think his win needs to be scrutinized for fraud, etc.  – but then that would be “racist”, of course!

  • Trixta

    Or did they ….?

  • Trixta

Come on, SusiePuma.  Many Americans of Mexican descent — and  Mexican nationals even — have fought and died for this country (e.g my cousin [a US citizen] was one of the first to die in Viet Nam.) Yes, we do have a serious border problem especially now that we have dwindling resources, etc,  but there are many Americans (myself included) who have family ties in Mexico. BTW,  When 9/11 occurred, Mexico supported the US and grieved with us (Mexicans also died in 9/11).

  • MG

The real dangerous border to cross in order to get into the US for ANY South Americans (Guatemalans, Salvadorians, etc…) is the Mexican Border!!!
What we haven’t heard of is how many women were raped and robbed..men beaten up and robbed, or how many people have disappeared for being illegal in Mexico.  Los Federales are feared by the mexicans and those trying to cross into Mexico to get to the US.
As one Guatamalan said I preferred to be caught by the US border Patrol then the Federales because I know I will survive!
Now there a nasty tidbit the Mexicans will not even think of discussing out loud!

  • FranSC

Amy, I have been on vacation and realize this piece is probably such history by now that even YOU may not see it.  I was quite interested in this!  I am also quite suspicious of Clyburn desperately trying to disassociate himself from this Green guy.  Given Clyburn’s history with 0bama fraud, no one should be surprised if Clyburn isn’t in on this.  While I do not want to wrongly accuse someone, Clyburn brought up “the plant” idea as if he knows this will be discovered sooner rather than later and he just wants to be outfront with it.

Just ask yourself this:  Who in SC would want more than Rep Clyburn to defeat Senator Demint??  No one!  There is no way that can be done without voter machine fraud which DOES exist.  Bottom line – if I were one of the investigators, I would not let up on this until I knew for sure how much Rep James Clyburn pushed this candidate behind the scenes like he did 0bama.
