How The Obama Campaign Bungled the Palin Phenomenon.

With the explosion of support that McCain is seeing in the last week, there can only be one explanation… Sarah Palin. She, at once, unified the evangelical base, small town America, and offered centrist and Independent women another option.

And it scared the bejesus out of the Obama campaign.

The total shock that the media and the Obama campaign clearly experienced at the naming of Palin as McCain’s VP pick showed their arrogance and close mindedness. She had been on McCain’s radar for months. As a matter of fact, even I, a relatively casual observer of the McCain VP search, knew that she was on the short list (and was rooting for her btw).

And so, without having paid attention to the crime fighting small town girl that loves her church and her guns, the media and the campaign surrogates had to start coming up with information from zero. They grasped at straws and started throwing out information without any real vetting or fact checking.

First were the vicious rumors about Trig not being Sarah’s baby, but her daughter’s. Then came the horrendous reports that Palin and/or her husband had committed adultry. And finally came the questions about what kind of a mother Palin would be if she were Vice President… an incredibly sexist sentiment and something that would never had been asked if she was a man.

All of these “reports and rumors” were echoed by Obama surrogates and repeated by campaign spokespeople, though not Obama himself.

Once they realized that the personal attacks were backfiring, the attacks on the “issues” began… only the attacks were far off the mark. First came the reports that she cut funding for Teen Pregnancy programs,  but a quick internet search showed that she actually increased it by 300%. Then came the reports that she cut funding for special needs children, but in actuality she had increased it by 200%.  And my personal favorites were the reports that she tried to get books banned from the library, which is patently ridiculous.   The”facts” were clearly flawed…  they had to find something else.

And then came the wedge issues…. They said she was anti-contraception, which is not true. Then they said she was anti-sex education, which is not true. And all of this was followed quickly by attacks on her religion (a religion shared by a good number of high ranking DNC and Obama Campaign officials mind you), nevermind the fact that she has never once shown any propensity to incorporate religion into any of her policy decisions, much less push for things like school prayer and having creationism taught in schools.

At the end, even Obama himself began to join in, calling her “the former mayor,” making fun of both the size of the town she was mayor of, and the size of the state she is now governor of… nevermind the fact that Biden, Dean, Sununu, Patrick, Kennedy and several other top North Eastern Democrats come from states with a similar population size to that of Alaska.

Diminishing the accomplishments of an impressive woman was not the smartest thing the Obama campaign could have done, especially considering the deep division in the Democratic party over the way Hillary Clinton was treated.  For many of the centrist democrats and Hillary supporters, the attacks on Palin were like the attacks on Hillary Clinton but in fast forward and on steroids.

The attacks were backfiring, but could Palin withstand the storm was the big question.

Palin exceeded all expectations, striking back with amazing strength and a smile that killed. Palin hit Obama hard, making fun of Obama’s claim to fame as a Community Organizer and attacking him on his experience, sending the Obama campaign reeling.

That one joke did 4 things…. It highlighted Obama’s inexperience, brought up the question about what a community organizer does exactly because most of America probably doesn’t know, it painted Obama as an urbanite that is out of touch with rural America, and it painted Obama as a rabblerouser and a trouble maker… a sort of 60’s era radical. None of these images are particularly appealing to rural and small town America.

Stupidly, the Obama fell into the trap and began to compare the experience level of Obama to Palin… an incredibly dumb move that both diminished Obama and bolstered Palin. Comparing the top of one ticket to the bottom of another is never a good idea. It only served to put a spotlight on the experience gap between McCain and Obama.

Now Obama must climb out of the hole that his campaign, the media and himself have created. The fact that Obama is anywhere from dead even to 10 points behind in all the national polls has served as a wake up call and thrown them into panic mode.  The media is on high alert and the narrative is slowly changing.

We shall see if Obama and his campaign keep insulting small town America and those who cling to God and their guns.

We shall see if they keep diminishing the accomplishments of women.

We shall see if they continue to make the same mistakes. Over and over.  And over.

    NOTE TO OBAMABUSHBOTS and UHBAMA!

THIS is what “throwing the kitchen sink” looks like, morons!

My God; made up lie after lie, and seeing what sticks.

How DARE they accuse Hillary of doing this against uhhhbama.

    DISGUSTING!

    • Hope Floats

Oh, yeah. The small town mayor digs met by attacking Obama’s experience as a community organizer was like this: he slapped her in public, and she kicked him in the balls and knocked out his teeth.

I like women with fight in them. Don’t come between a mama and her cub, either.

Did you hear Obama describing McCain as just another Bush? He said, “you can put LIPSTICK ON A PIG and it’s still a pig” I heard the crowd groan amidst the laughter and clapping…They know he’s really going to pay for that one.

Wow! Gravel is a non-partisan man of HONOR and a fighter. Those Obamabot hosts desparately tried to get him to smear Palin and he defended her brilliantly.

They tried to talk over him and he would not allow it.

There must be a place in the McCain administration for a maverick like Gravel.

You’ve gotta give credit where it’s due. Democrats can’t run the country to save theirr lives–but they sure know how to lose campaigns better than any other political party.

This campaign season is getting uglier by the second.

      • Perry Logan

Hey–no fair stealing my lines. ;-)

Let’s put it this way. Bill Clinton inherited the biggest surplus ever–given to him by Bush I.

After eight years, Clinton had turned that deficit into the biggest surplus in U.S. history.

Bush II then piddled away the Clinton surplus, leaving his successor with a bigger deficit than all previous American Presidents combined.

        Now THAT’S bad government!

        • tek

You mean Clinton inherited the biggest DEFICIT ever, not surplus.

        • Perry Logan

Eratum: Bill Clinton inherited the biggest deficit ever. Mr. Logan regrets the error.

        • tek

I hope Perry is not an Obamabot who is EXTOLLING the Clinton years! Did you not listen to your leader state that Bill Clinton didn’t do anything good and Ronald Reagan was the greatest 20th century pres?

If you people think Clinton was a great president, then you are the biggest hypocrites ever to trash Hillary and push her out of the contest.

  • Phlipper

Should you be supporting Palin? Yikes.

If you are a sane woman, who sees Hillary as the best candidate for president, Palin just doesn’t fit the bill.

There are plenty of lies spread about her, but there are also some awful truths. Please investigate her environmental and energy platforms. And her trying to ban the books is true.

You are defending a person who is a complete opposite of Hillary because you are mad at Obamabots (who I am mad at too – I hate them), but this is wholly different.

Let’s keep consistent with what we want. Hillary as Prez.

    • dixie

Country before party. Clinton has put party before country. No thank you.

      • destardi

Hillary is working within the party to change it. It’s the only way it’s going to happen; has she attacked Palin?

        No, she has not.

I’m a “progressive” in the sense that I don’t think the govt has ANY business tellnig women what to do with their bodies, (I’m a male), favoring any one religion above others, equal rights.

I’m an AMERICAN in that I believe in the 2nd Amendment without any question; the right to bear arms is a prerequisite to any free country. I think offshore drilling should be considered; I don’t think illegal aliens are good for the country at exponential rates (how many extra water bottles is that?!?) etc.

But really, uhbama is the worst kind of political trickery.

He’s an illusion, based on SHIT.

Hillary is a female statesman. There is no comparison.

I will be voting for McCain/Palin, because I trust McCain to be his own man; unlike bush. I have reservations about Palin’s beliefs, but from what I’ve read, she does not seek to enforce her personal faith on the rest of us.

I think she’s all about honesty and forthrightness, and I’ll take that in big piles at a time.

        • Irish1139

The object is to get rid of the leaders of the democratic party. Goodbye Dean, goodbye Brazille, goodbye Kerry, etc.

          • politicsIsdirty

I agree. The bottom line is to get rid of the current leaders of the Democratic party and put the Clintons back in power.

I miss Hillary and the way she speaks about the issues. However, the MSM never spoke positively about that. All they care is about how popular and charismatic Obama is. They never even mentioned his thin resume and his thin accomplishment.

A vote for McCain/Palin is a vote for the more exprienced person. Furthermore, it a vote to rid the Democratic party of its current leaders – Obama, Pelosi and Dean.

            vote for McCain/Palin.

        • FembotsForObama

          destardi,
          I think offshore drilling should be considered;

Me too, unfortunately, here’s why… we need OIL. China is consuming mass quantities of oil. we have big cars, SUVs and the like, which middle class Americans aren’t giving up too soon. few are tuning to hybrids. nearly all lawn equipment is now run on oil, nearly every snow removal device is run on oil. bikes are great, but I live in WI and we need vehicles during the winter.

If some were as so concerned about the environment as I hear about, then why aren’t they taking buses? and supporting light rail?

My spouse and I share one car, and alternate between walking and bus rides all to help the environment. And guess what? It is a real difficult thing to do! Even with the great bus service we have. And people think we are weird! Especially young people, who think we’re not cool.

I can’t tell you how many students drive to our local university alone in their cars! A free ride service, free bus pass, and bicycles are now an option, but still the majority drive, in their big ass cars. And there’s litter everywhere. Guess what, litter is bad for the environment! So maybe it would help if these kids would stop chucking their water bottles and Jimmie John wrappers out of the car windows and start hauling their fat asses on the free services they get. Start walking their talk. No wonder they choose to follow Obama!

    • Observer

It amazes me how people will use Hillary’s name to try to turn you against Palin.

      • roseeriter

Those democrats that use Hillary don’t realize that most women refuse to go back to their users and abusers and those that do need therapy.

Obama is Bush #3- a fraud, cocaine addict, no experience and a complete empty suit.

Hillary does not own my vote, I do. And Country first this time because Obamacrats are Misogynist, racist, sexist HYPOCRITS!!

A vote for Obama is a vote for a puppet.

        • dixie

Right on Rosee , Clinton does not own my vote either and I will not be her puppet just because she is being one for the Chicago thug.

          • K. Wynne

            dixie,

Don’t turn on Hillary. She stood in the arena all by herself and took everything they threw at her and then some.

She deserves our loyalty for staying in the campaign to the very end, despite the all out assault by the MSM, pundits and obama nuts, because by doing so, we were able to see just what a fraud obama truly is.

Hillary is doing what she has to do to keep from getting all the blame when obama loses.

Women owe Hillary big time, because choosing Sarah Palin was only possible because of Hillary’s heroic run.

Hillary will be back and we’ll be waiting for her.

            • elise

You are so right, K.Wynne. Those who suggest otherwise are not true Hillary supporters. I suspect most are Republicans who could lose the conditional support for McCain if they keep dragging Hillary into another fight.

    • KC

Sorry obot, but that train has left the station. A Palin victory means Obama and his thugs will be expelled from the DNC and Hillary will have been proven right. The Clintons will regain control and it WILL be Clinton vs. Palin in 2012 – we WILL have the first woman president in just four more years.

      • deke

Exactly right. Although I disagree with both McCain and Palin I respect their opinions and believe they are the kind of republicans that democrats can work with and achieve consensus. Obama on the other hand is just the continuation of the politics of personal destruction, he has not demonstrated an ability to be able to reach across party lines and build coalitions and is not respect by elected republicans. McCain on the other hand enjoys enormous respect among democrats and is constantly approached by democratic leaders to sign on their legislation which is why the hard core right does not trust him. Politically McCain’s positions are closer to the leader of the senate democrats than are Obama’s when he has a position.

    • Shiloh

The road to Hillary as President passes straight through McCain/Palin. And that’s that.

    • schmog

Banning books – debunked! Look it up on the net, or are you in the habit of just regurgitating everything Obama’s drones feed you?

    • Rev. Wright, can you fix my garlic nose?

And her trying to ban the books is true.

Why just because you say so?

Palin is a phenomenon, you do not get it. Women are mimicking her hairstyle and eyewear, in a complementary way. I merely stated that Obama has messed up really bad and that Palin is an impressive woman that hits back with style and grace.

And these “awful truths” are? I assume they are more credible than the much-discredited slur that Palin tried to ban books. SHE DID NOT. This is such a ludicrous attempt at character assassination that the list of books she allegedly wanted banned includes book that hadn’t even been published yet. Obama people are throwing everything at her hoping something will stick. It’s a despicable tactic and is only succeeding in driving more and more voters to McCain. A few more weeks of this and Obama will be fortunate if he wins Biden’s Delaware–because he won’t win much else.

    • Hope Floats

Yes, please investigate her energy policy. She negotiated a natural gas pipeline from Alaska through Canada to the lower 48 that will lead us to energy independence. She has taken on big oil. As governor, she has seen first hand how effective geothermal, solar and wind are as energy alternatives and how much it costs to get these programs running and how long to put them in place and see results. Please bring up energy.

    • Hope Floats

And if you men would just wear condoms, the Roe v. Wade issue wouldn’t be such a big deal. But gender equality is as big an issue as reproductive rights.

The book-banning thing is a lie. The Troopergate Chief of police was the librarian’s BF, and she wasn’t fired. No books were banned. The fake list had titles that weren’t even published yet while Palin was mayor.

      You suck balls.

Sorry Philliper, I wanted Hillary because she was authentic (until she went out to campaign for Obama), smart (scary smart), and loves her country. I don’t see any of that in Obama or Biden. What I see in McCain/Palin is authentic, smart (not so much as Hillary maybe, but smart enough to pick a woman as his VP and set this election on fire) and loves their country. All else can be set aside as I did not agree on all of her positions. I had confidence though that she would do what she thought was best for the country. From what I have learned about Obama, what he thinks is best for the country is scary…..

    • Ferd McBerfle

Let’s keep consistent with what we want. Hillary as Prez.

She isn’t the nominee and I doubt any NQer is going to vote for the plastic elastic candidate. Ergo, McCain/Palin is the only viable alternative and not a bad alternative, at that.

    • hilldemgoneindie

you are defending a person who is a complete opposite of Hillary because you are mad at Obamabots (who I am mad at too – I hate them), but this is wholly different.

      so?

i own my own vote. i only give it to honorable, patriotic americans. i do NOT give it to cheaters, phonies, misogynists and racists.

imo, hillary blew it with me. she needed to stand up against her party – the very party that stole the nomination from her. if she cannot stand up to them, can she really stand up to rogue countries or terrorists? i’m just sayin… and i was a HUGE hillary fan.

i may not agree with everything the mccain/palin believes in, but what we do agree on is how unqualified oblahma is to be potus. i’ve withstood nearly 8 years of the disasterous bush presidency – i have faith that mccain/palin are hands down 100% better than bush and THAT i can handle while the crooked dnc either dies or cleans house.

        Hill Dem,

One thing to consider before you rail against Hill giving an endorsement to ob now is that Bill is the head of the Democratic party as most recent President.

Hillary has staunch supporters who worked their hearts out for her among the rank and file of that party.

Her foundation of belief is their platform, UHC etc.

She has no choice, she must carry water for their messiah even though it was obvious she long knew he could not win the general and wasn’t Pres material.

She must FIX the party from within and she cannot do that until they lose of their own accord and then turn to the party faithful centrists to fix it – as they ALWAYS do after such mistakes.

She is a Dem senator from NY. How do you think she could win re-election to her seat if she had turned on Ob and the party?

Do you think she (and Bill)should have had a fit of rage and left the party and bashed it and joined McPalin along with Lieberman? Look how that worked out for Joe!

Nope, her hands were tied and she has to do as told.

But when this election process is over – the Clinton’s will have the floor for 4 years to tell it all and run Hillary in ’12. And you can bet when the republicans are done with BO there won’t be much left of him but small change.

Is it fair or good? No it isn’t. But Hillary has my unwavering support, then, now and always.

        Nobama, Nohow, Noway.

        Hillary 2012.

So if it is as O’Reilly says, each attack on Palin results in a vote for McCain, then Mac just got another one. To be honest this has so much irony, it can’t be made up. Well at least this prick put his photo up along with the name of his blog space “The Political Whore.”

    Defending Palin: The Estrogen Brigade!
September 9th, 2008 by Wayne Garcia in Presidential Politics

In response to a massive opp research effort by the Obama campaign, the McCain-Palin ticket today announced that a “Truth Squad” that will surround Gov. Sarah Palin with the truth ..

The major qualification for membership on the squad appears to be having a uterus; it is an all-female ring of justice, as listed in the campaign’s news release today. Nothing like playing the gender card. Or is it the national media that is playing the gender card? And what does the gender card look like, because I remember having a deck of nudie cards when I was in my formative years and wonder if it is still anything like that?

No. But, I think you just gave Mac a whole bunch of votes.

Say it aint so, Joe!! The Obama-Biden ticket has sunk to a new low!

    BREAKING NEWS ON JOE BIDEN

    September 9, 2008

Biden: Palin Would Be ‘Backward Step for Women’

Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) says that if Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) becomes the first female vice president it will be a “backward step for women.”

UPDATE: Republican National Committee spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson has a response:

“The only person taking a step backward is Joe Biden, whose appalling and arrogant statements are better suited for the back rooms of his old boys club. Sarah Palin’s nomination as the Republican vice presidential nominee is an historic opportunity to break the highest glass ceiling. While John McCain and Sarah Palin continue to press their message of change, Joe Biden should stop these sorts of old-style attacks.”

Now that is the way to hit back!

    • Duras

Joe Biden is as dumb as a bag of rocks.

      • Docelder

A lot of grown up people… especially around the Philly area recall the plagiarism thing where Biden admitted he plagiarized a law review article. That is the sort of character defining thing that middle America doesn’t forget so easily. Forgive… yes but they won’t forget.

        • karen for Clinton (sigh, McPalin now)

Two flaky fakes, that’s the Dem ticket of the century. There has never been a more repugnant pairing in my lifetime.

Biden couldn’t scrounge up any voters on his own.

BO picked Biden because he was the best remaining dem willing to be on the titanic twits ticket.

So many potential running mates turned him down.

    • JKIR

Well, Joe can just leave it to us gals to decide whether something is a step back for us. But, for that matter, we’re used to dancing backwards and in high heels so he can save his concern.

  • Duras

I think that Palin is undoubtedly a huge part of the surge in support for the GOP ticket. But I also think that a big part of it is McCain’s speech to the nation on Thursday night. It might not have had the rhetorical flourish of Obama’s “Sermon from Mt. Olympus”, but a great many people got the chance, for the first time, to hear McCain’s story without the media filter. I think that many Americans are responding positively to a guy who’s proven that he’s got balls the size of church bells, who’s a straight shooter, who isn’t afraid to spit in the eye of anyone, Democrat or Republican, if that’s what the situation calls for, and who unabashedly loves his country above all else.

    • http://www.governuts.us Agust304

I think you have a valid point. 90% of America is made up of normal people, not poli-addicts like us, and all the hero and background stories were new to them. And they liked it. And you have to admit the last 3 minutes of McCain’s speech, soring over the crowd noise “fight with me!” was memorable.

      • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

That last part of his speech wasn’t just memorable – it was amazing! And the stupid pundits keep trying to shove down our throats that every speech Obama gives is the next Gettysburg Address.

        • Duras

I honestly think that McCain may have won this election with the last 30 seconds of that speech. It was electrifying. Literally made me stand up and give a fist pump and a “HELL YEAH!!!” THAT’s the guy I want leading my country!

          • Postmaster

duras, my thoughts! When McCain was shouting fight with me, then said Stand Up Stand Up, I stood up and was shouting.

        • Ferd McBerfle

And the stupid pundits keep trying to shove down our throats that every speech Obama gives is the next Gettysburg Address.

Oblahblah does just that-blah, blah. His speeches are nothing more than lots (and lots and lots) of lofty-sounding words strung together to sound elegant and full of meaning. In reality, they are repetitive slogans and catch-phrases in the tradition of the sound bite and 30-second commercial. The very best speech writers use words sparingly. Oblahblah will never have a Gettysburg Address because he is no Lincoln.

      AMEN!!

  • Ani

The media is on high alert and the narrative is slowly changing.

We shall see if Obama and his campaign keep insulting small town America and those who cling to God and their guns.

We shall see if they keep diminishing the accomplishments of women.

We shall see if they continue to make the same mistakes. Over and over. And over

Change you can believe in — yeah, baby.

I don’t really see how they can change the narrative now — Obama and Axelrod have run the campaign of arrogance the entire year and loved every minute of it. They have reveled in insulting Hillary’s supporters. How are they suddenly going to change their stripes and pretend they don’t really have contempt for all the people they obviously have contempt for.

Even if such a thing were possible, at this late stage of the game, who will be fooled?

  • Luis

The MSM will try anything to stop the McCain-Palin ticket. Having supported Hillary because she would bring peace and prosperity to our country, I now support McCain because at least he will bring peace. Sen. Obama will do nothing but bring us to our knees. Think about it – he is Bush-lite. I have not seen this type of media slander since 2000 and 2004. They edit his videos, they feed him lines, this is just like Bush!

    • NYC OBAMA GIRL

Are you kidding? Do you have your head on backwards?? McCain is Bush lite!!!! Obama represents everything opposite of Bush! What the hell are you even talking about?
McCain wants to continue the war, voted against banning waterboarding (a favorite of Bush), and doesn’t know squat about economics!
Obama wants to approach things differently, and try to fix our damaged reputation in the world.
And HOW can you go from Hillary to McCain? Hillary and McCain are opposites! Go ahead, betray your party, and Your BELIEFS and vote McCain. Guess you don’t care about women’s rights, cause Palin sure doesn’t!

    Texas Hill Country,

Excellent posting. All original writing without references. I like that. I agree with your views. Except I would like to make your thread a little more interesting by adding the following:

    You said…

We shall see if… Hillary Clinton goes to bat for Obambi with the mission of helping him out with all of those deficiencies.

And We shall see if… other prominent Democratic feminine leaders also step up to the plate to shore his weaknesses.

That’s also what I would like to see… NOT.

I am usually a citation freak, but for clarity and smoothness of reading I decided to forego them in this article. I figured most of what I presented was already well known and did not need references anyway as they are pretty much common knowledge by now.

In the future you will be seeing some much more in depth and detailed articles with plenty of sources provided.

I am glad that you enjoyed the article. Hopefully, Larry, Susan and Nancy will be kind enough to keep having me back!

I am disgusted that the MSM are reporting rumors about Palin and they won’t even report the true negative facts about Obama. It should be a red flag to every American that the corporate owned media is protecting and cheerleading Obama. This guy is a crook to his core and so are the Democrats who support him.

    • Luis

Exactly, the corporation want this guy. He lied about FISA. Without him, the lies and coverup of the Bush administration could’ve been exposed with a federal law. Instead, Obama switched and supported this bill. Hillary voted against because this FISA is a travesty.

      • Wisewoman

Joe Biden his vp, also voted against FISA.

    • SHV

The Corporate Media have there own agenda…Obama is starting to bleed…when the media sharks pick up the smell, they will suddenly discover the “Real Obama” and it will be Chicago, Rezko and Ayers; day and night.

      • Ani

Well, that would be nice — won’t hold me breath.

But it’s a win/win for them in their view because they either get the corporate shill, Obama, elected or they get another Republican. Also OK with them. Although I don’t know if Sen. McCain is what they bargained for. That remains to be seen.

  • K. Wynne

    Duras,

McCain’s speech was inspiring towards the end when he said “stand up and fight with me”…however, I don’t think it would have had nearly the passion or the power, without the “Palin Effect”. McCain has been motivated and inspired by bringing Palin on to the ticket and it shows.

Face it, when Hillary left the campaign, it became dull and boring with just the men. When Palin came into the picture, she brought with her the same kind of vitality and freshness that Hillary brought to with her campaign.

Women in power are the change we’ve been waiting for!

    • Lark

Cristina is a goddess. But that’s Argentina.

    • Duras

  • dixie

Every time the Obama scum attacks Palin the republicans have a counter. Now it’s her church. But what about Obama’s church and Rev Wright and his affair with another woman?

    • Hope Floats

I wonder if this isn’t setting us up for The Return of Wright. He says he turned the other cheek, but let’s get some ads going anyway. Not just about him, but not ignoring him, either. Obama’s the one who thinks religion should be in bed with government, as long as it appears secular. Let’s see what kind of religion that would be.

      • Duras

Oh hell yes …. By all means, let’s DEFINITELY get into a discussion of each of the candidates religious practices and church affiliations!

Just like when the Dems were too stupid to see that if they tried to make an issue of Palin’s inexperience it would boomerang back on Obama, they seem to be intent on repeating the mistake by trying to paint Palin’s church as some kind of uber-fundamentalist freak show.

Jerimiah “God damn America!” Wright anyone?

When is the interview, by the way? I don’t want to miss it! (This is brilliant strategy on the part of McCain/Palin, to have her hold off on interviews so that we’re gunning to see the first one she does.)

Palin and McCain have great chemistry. The crowds relate to them. One sign at a McCain/Palin rally said “I am not bitter.”

Obama’s appearances are looking more and more funereal. He looks pissed off and tired.

    Quite a contrast.

    • Skiron

McCain sure would like there to be chemistry with Palin. Just check out the way he snuck numerous glances at her backside during that rally when he introduced her.

Plus, she’s the real deal and Americans love her. She’s here to stay.

    • Docelder

Well first McCain was “bush”… Now Palin is “bush”… In my opinion flagrantly wrong on both counts. They broke the mold after “bush”… maybe a factory recall. But more to the point… who is “The One”… who is he really? The inability to answer that one simple question definitively has put this entire series or events in motion.

    • Hope Floats

The bottom line is that over the past year several stations and reporters of the liberal media and the DNC have trashed women whether it be Hillary or Sarah Palin while the republicans have elevated women. John McCain had a great ad of respect for Hillary and has Palin, an accomplished woman governor on his ticket. I find this a difficult reality because I know many Dems respect women but the national message has been a sad reality of Dems against women none the less. I plan to vote for McCain/Palin. Obama should have not been so cocky as a rookie senator and allow the more qualified woman candidate to prevail. His ego and obvious need to dominate women would not let him.

  • cathnealon

BO’s education speech today was laughable. He talked about his programs and his focus on public schools. Okay, is he delusional. He went to private schools his whole life. Chicago’s inner city schools are a mess and his Annenberg challenge ripped off millions and millions of dollars instead of reforming the schools. I hope McCain and Palin start bringing this stuff up–everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie.

As president, Barack Obama would be a slave to the same teacher’s unions whose incompetence and monopoly on the primary and secondary education systems has proven to be such a dismal failure. This is why 80% of DC’s schoolchildren can’t read and yet the incompetent teachers and administratiors responsible for them can’t be fired for piss-poor performance.

With Obama in the White House, absolutely nothing will change re: primary and secondary education in this country, I don’t give a shit how “tough” he’s talking on the subject out on the campaign trail.

DNC has made things so depressing.
If we succeed, we have 4 more years of Rethugs.
If we lose, DNC ramps up the corruption that brought
it success. It will run over and devour its own voters
    until we stop it.

2012 is the only ray of hope in this dismal
    election year.

    • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

I am not depressed at all. I am very hopeful that McCain and Palin will win!

When this election started, I did not like McCain, but that was because I did not know much about him. As I have learned more about him (and seen how corrupt and inept Obama is in contrast), I have gained more and more respect for McCain. When McCain picked Palin, that clinched it for me. I truly believe that McCain and Palin will do a good job and we have nothing to fear in the next four years if they are elected.

And I am VERY GRATEFUL that, in the one year I have to vote against the Democrat, the Republican option is SO palatable. McCain is no Bush; Palin is no Cheney – we have good people on the Republican side this year, and thank heavens for that!

      • Skiron

“I truly believe that McCain and Palin will do a good job and we have nothing to fear in the next four years if they are elected.”

        This is snark, right?

        • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

          No, quite sincere.

        • Docelder

I also believe both of them to be good, honest, decent people. I believe they will do their best to deliver what they have promised. McCain is from an era that has almost passed us by. A time when a man’s word meant something… no, actually it meant everything. I believe what he said, and also believe he will feel obligated to carry through with what he has promised.

  • cdo

I believe ABC’s Palin interview will be shown this Thursday, and Friday.

      ouch!

    • Duras

OUCH!!! McCain’s team delivers a hard right uppercut to the jaw of the Obama campaign!

That one’s gonna leave a mark.

“Learning about sex before learning how to read.”

      Brutal.

    • karen for Clinton (sigh, McPalin now)

The babies won’t be can’t be punished with babies.

  • Faye

cdo, I sincerly hope you are right about the Palin interview on ABC. However I hope ABC is fair and does not edit out everything great that Palin says.

    • Skiron

Because I’m sure she’ll say a lot of GREAT things, right?
Like maybe how we should teach creationism along with evolution in our public schools.
And how our troops were sent to Iraq on a mission from God.
      Those types of great things.

      • Ferd McBerfle

Judging from the content of your post, I’d say you’re the missing link, which scientists have been looking for in the evolutionary ladder. So you can rest easy now about the Creationist wedge issue as it is now moot.

Old talking point, bot. Try to stay on topic.

        • Hope Floats

          HAHAHA.

The idea of the daughter of two elementary school teachers, one a science teacher, supporting creationism being taught is fucking stupid.

          • Ferd McBerfle

I agree. It is patently stupid. And even if it were the case, as a scientist I have no issue with teaching Creationism so long as it isn’t in a science class.

      • Fenelon spoke

She never said that creationism should be taught, nor has she tried too implement any such policy. She said that it would be o.k, if kids brought it up if it was discused. And what she said about the war was that she hoped that out troops were on God’s side. Nothing like stretching the truth there-Skiron. When does your Obama campaign work shift end?

        • Ferd McBerfle

Skiron has no use for facts in his line of work, trolling.

    • Docelder

I think… that as “The One” starts to fall and the tide of popular opinion goes against him… We will see the networks follow suit and begin to enter the feeding frenzy. I think… that part of his charm to the networks was his perceived charm from the people. As that wears thin… I think… things are going to go downhill really fast. Just my opinion.

      • Duras

Susan Estrich made that very comment a few weeks ago in one of her columns. She says that media adoration is very much a two-edged sword because if you hit a rough patch, they can turn on you in a second like a pack of wolves.

    • Postmaster

the McCain camp should also videotape it, if ABC tries to skew it, then McCain could show it himself on ad spots.

  • DanL

I don’t know how true this is yet cuz the numbers haven’t been released yet…but FOX NEWS is reporting..OBAMA only took in 17 MILLION in AUGUST..no wonder he’s pissed at his donators….LOL

    • karen for Clinton (sigh, McPalin now)

Last month they held back on delivering the figures and many said they included some of August’s money take into the July figures.

Now August has to borrow from September’s figures.

But sooner or later it will all catch up to him.

He missed out on the Nigerian money when he got caught.

What do you expect from a campaign run by political neophytes?

Great first post THC! Both cogent and comprehensive!

  • Peggy Sue

You know, a point that this essay underscores is the total unprepared status of the Dems when the Palin veep announcement was made. I’m not a shaker and mover within the Democratic Party, but I heard Palin’s name, knew she was on McCain’s list. Can’t say I knew that much about her, but if you’re trying to prepare for a General Election, how could the Dems act like McCain had pulled a bunny from his hat?

This nonsense about Palin not being vetted by the Republicans is pure BS. The Dems are simply trying to cover their own incompetency and arrogance: they thought this was going to be an easy, no-contest win. Barack was suppose to be coronated at the Dems convention, and then easily slide to the White House.

    Surprise!

If running such a “fine” campaign is on Obama’s presidential experience list, this oversight doesn’t say much.

And the Republicans haven’t even started throwing the mud yet.

It’s going to be a very interesting 8+ weeks!

  • Deb

    Game over…
Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin’s new “change” mantra.

“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

The crowd apparently took the “lipstick” line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: “lipstick.”

  • Athena The Warrior

The pig and fish line are not going over well with people. Even some of his more rational supporters thinks he crossed the line and will pay fot it.

  • Deb

I thought it was a hoax at first. Seriously.

Shep just played it on tv.

This is the beginning of the end..

    PEEK-A-BOO!!!

  • SJ

What the hell is Obama saying now how in heavens name can he make this statement of lipstick on a pig and old stink fish.

That is it, no one should vote for this fool, at least no woman should this man has a serious problem with strong, active, vibrant white woman, and no come can tell me other wise.

Obama could not stand Hillary’s success and now he is showing the same attitude about Palin, maybe if they were black like Oprah he would not mind them being around but he sure does not want any white woman that can show him up in any way in the picture…the man has a problem people.

  • Irene

I want the palintologists to HELP CLEAN UP THE SENATE AND CONGRESS. Beracuda and fighter can’t do it all without backup from both the house and senate. WE have got get dingy Harry and crapy Nancy. If we can get more Reps and Less Dems then Jealous Palosi is out on aaaaaas… With OOOObam and BBBBBBiiidee……n

  • Zelda Crunch

There’s another explanation. Sort of. It’s not only Sarah Palin but how she is the antidote for something people have grown increasingly wrathful of. Obama.

  • Tristan

I know! None of us are paid for our political analysis (I assume) and many people on this board were saying that it was highly likely that McCain would choose a woman VP to counter the fact that Obama did not choose Sen Clinton.

I personally think what’s doomed Obama’s campaign is just that there’s really nothing new anymore. In the primaries, Obama could run to the far left and come across as a “different” politician – assuming you think a black Howard Dean is all that different. Now in the general election he moves to the center and has pretty mainstream policy positions, including many stolen from the Republicans, and it just seems like “more of the same”. I can’t think of anything Obama is planning to do that’s really new and different.

Actually, you know it all started when he skipped and flipped – on public financing and FISA. That was the beginning of the beginning of the end.

  • JKIR

Very nice commentary, THC, I am so relieved that Palin was picked because she seems like a moderate even though the O campaign has tried their best to paint her as extreme right. I was really looking for an alternative to Obama to vote for but I had to make sure McCain wasn’t going to choose some really extreme right winger. If he had chosen Romney, eww, I don’t know if I could have voted for that ticket. McCain and Palin are very, very tempting. I wonder if others were like me, just waiting to make sure McCain didn’t pick someone they couldn’t live with?

  • http://www.missmalevolent.com Miss Malevolent

I’m a centrist…and let me tell you, Palin is no centrist…not by a long shot.

  • Alien

    WTF is a centrist. ?

is it like ‘Dead skunk in the middle of the road” ?
