I have a friend that works on oil rigs. He has done so for years. He emailed me to pass along a statement written by a friend of his involved in deep well drilling as well. And while we’re both Ohio State friends and his friend is an LSU person, (wink) I said I would post it on every site I could. It is a long read, but a wonderfull read. Please keep it going.

I am dependent on Ultra-Deepwater Drilling for my income. The shutdown of Ultra-Deepwater Drilling is an unfair attack on the petroleum industry. British Petroleum Americas (B.P.) failure to perform their drilling operation in a safe manner is your issue. We as an industry are aware of the many B.P. failures on the Transocean Deepwater Horizon.  The 11 Men that lost their lives are our brothers.  Unsafe well practices by B.P. must be investigated. The root cause is a failure to resolve a poor primary cement job.  B.P. had knowledge that the primary cement job had failed; their continued operation was unsafe.  As the operator the men on the Deepwater Horizon trusted that B.P. would work safe.  Federal government shares cause for allowing B.P. to continue to operate in the United States. B.P. has numerous safety failures and violation of Federal and industry standards.
As Ultra-Deepwater Drillers we demand safety at our work sites. Exploration Drilling is dangerous work. Each day we confront danger by using safe work practices. These work practices are a standard for our industry that we as workers demand.  Government only steps in when they can make profit from our labor. Government safety standards require bribes by corporate raiders who also steal our labor.
When we die in helicopters there are no memorials. When we burn to death there is no green peace outrage. If we drown in frigid waters there is no Presidential visit with our families. When we lose a leg, arm, hand or foot government does not shut down for a single second. Media does not visit men that cannot stand straight because of failed backs from the heavy lifting required in our jobs. We shut down operations when someone is hurt.  We perform safety stand downs to prove our work can continue forward safely. We pre task each operation to ensure safety.  We observe each other as a natural part of our work to keep each other safe. Government does not keep me or my workmates safe we do it because we care about each other. We know what a wife goes through when a husband is lost. We have raised children of lost work mates. We are brothers. We are Teams of men that provide oil and gas to America.

Trust that we will not stand-by idle as you destroy our work. We are not some union wimps that rely on government assistance. You keep us out of work for 6 months; watch the power that will join the Tea Party Movement. We are men that shaped and built this industry with blood and sweat. We will engineer a massive shut down of your permit to wreck lives. Someone should investigate who is making profit on this spill. Check the ties to the Obama Administration. One word- NALCO

This moron does know that it was HIS administration’s appointees that gave BP a pass on safety violations, and even gave them a safety award in spite of hundreds of cites for violations?? And if he had gone to Congress, I am sure one of them would have pointed out the 1990 Oil Pollution Act, which pretty much says that the government can call in whatever equipment they need and charge the cost to the company that caused the spill/leak/gusher. And the taxpayer doesn’t foot the bill, so there  would be no “wasteful government spending”. Other than his salary, of course.

My friend is a very hard worker, has worked wells for over 20 years and is gone months at a time. His life has been in danger a few times on these rigs. But like he said, he wouldn’t give it up for the world.

The fact that ABC News aired this shallow utterance from this shallow little man tonight causes me to think that, like the W.H. posting it, they, too, saw something complimentary, commendatory, and comforting in it – I can’t imagine ABC would have aired the “can’t suck it up with a straw” clip if they had even an inkling how thoroughly repulsed the likes of us here at NQ would be hearing it. I believe they thought they were doing a good thing for BO, helping him out after a bad couple weeks, stroking his ego, kissing his boo-boo and making him feel all better. Instead, we witnessed, yet again, the sad, sad smallness of this man.

I can’t suck it up with a straw?  That is a snarky comment.  It is insulting to speak that way to locals who are losing their livelihoods as a result of this crisis and watching their beaches covered with sludge.  It is a sarcastic comment and passive aggressive –as if to say “what else would you like me to do — suck it up with a straw?”

If Hillary, McCain, Bush, or anyone else other than Obama made an insensitive comment like this, I suspect you would take issue with it, too.

There is no need for you to feel bad about posting something the President of the United States said. Plenty of reason for him and his dimwitted supporters to feel bad that he said it. Evidently the White House is clueless about how this makes him sound if they posted it on their website.

As a scientist, I am getting really weary of political hacks playing fast and loose with scientific data and using and abusing the scientific community. This applies to Al Gore, Karl Rove, That One, and anyone else completely functionally ignorant in science who insists on pontificating on the matter. For the last time: Sound science cannot be spun.

Yeah Creeper, they have no limit to the number of excuses they can make nor the number of people to whom they can shift the blame. “Yes we can” is really “We have a cool slogan but nary a clue”. - A marine biologist says new estimates for the amount of oil spilling out of a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico may quadruple the harmful effects on the environment.

Researchers say new figures for the blown-out well show the amount of oil gushing out may have been up to twice as much as previously thought.

That could mean 42 million gallons to more than 100 million gallons of oil have already fouled the Gulf’s fragile waters.

Paul Montagna, who is a marine biologist at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, says the more oil spewing from the leaking well means it can travel over a larger distance.

He told The Associated Press on Friday that the effects of the oil spill will likely be seen for at least a decade – and perhaps longer.

Blaming BP instead of blaming the federal judges who ALWAYS rule in their favor while lining their pockets with BP profits, makes as much sense as blaming a bully who beats-up smaller kids and steals their lunch money, instead of blaming the bully’s parents who encouraged the bully.

Morton also said that within six months, his agency would begin a medical classification system to help detainees with their healthcare needs.

The two leaders spoke by phone for 30 minutes Saturday to soothe trans-Atlantic tensions over the huge spill. Obama has sharpened his attacks on BP PLC as the company struggles to stop oil gushing from its ruptured deepsea well. Cameron is under pressure to get Obama to tone down the criticism fearing it will hurt the millions of British retirees that hold BP stock.
