With regard to the pig comment, yes he used and old saying to his advantage, knowing 1. it would get attention 2. already had clips of McCain and others saying the same thing. 3. He knew his audience would catch the double meaning against Sarah as her recent lipstick comment still on people’s minds and he knew he could defend himself with the old saying,
so he got his attention, had his cake and ate it too.

He is way to clever/smart not to haved intentionally planned to work that into the conversation. He even halfway covered his head in shame as he KNEW WHAT HE WAS SAYING would be taken the way it was despite his defense of old saying. Pretty slick.
