The End of Afghanistan UPDATE

We’re done in Afghanistan and so is General Stan McChrystal. McChrystal, who has been on the frontlines of combatting Islamic extremists since 2003 when he was put in charge of the Joint Special Operations Command, has self-destructed with the help of Rolling Stone Magazine. McChrystal’s problem? He’s not a politician and spoke candidly about his political masters to a journalist. That’s a no-no if you want to stay in your job.

UPDATE–Having read the article, “The Runaway General,” it is clear that this is a hit piece on McChrystal and, most importantly of all, McChrystal did not, REPEAT DID NOT, trash Obama or anyone in direct conversation with the journalist. Instead, all of the unsavory quotes come second and third hand and are filtered through people on McChrystal’s staff. McChrystal’s only lapse in judgment was allowing the Rolling Stone reporter access to his staff and allowing his staff to talk to the man. Nonetheless, this ends up tarnishing McChrystal. The members of his staff should be ashamed of themselves. They failed their Boss and walked him into an ambush.

Here’s the nuts and bolts of what’s going on:

The top U.S. war commander in Afghanistan is being called to the White House for a meeting with President Obama after issuing an apology Tuesday for an interview in which he took shots at top administration officials and his staff described the president as unprepared for their first one-on-one encounter.

In the article in this week’s issue of Rolling Stone, Gen. Stanley McChrystal also said he felt betrayed and blind-sided by his diplomatic partner, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry.

McChrystal’s comments are reverberating through Washington and the Pentagon after the magazine depicted him as a lone wolf on the outs with many important figures in the Obama administration.

It characterized him as unable to convince some of his own soldiers that his strategy can win the nation’s longest-running war and dejected that the president didn’t know about his commendable military record.

In Kabul on Tuesday, McChrystal issued a statement saying: “I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened.”

McChrystal has been called to the White House Situation Room on Wednesday to explain his comments to the magazine directly to the president, a senior administration official told Fox News. Normally, he would appear on a conference call for a regular strategy session.

The general was making a flurry of calls and decisions in the wake of the article’s publication. Fox News has learned that he fired the press aide, Duncan Boothby, who booked the interview. McChrystal also called Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen late Monday to apologize. Mullen told the general he was deeply disappointed, according to a senior military official at the Pentagon.

He has since spoken with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, both of whom were described as attention-seekers by an aide in the article. Kerry said afterward that he has “enormous respect” for the general, while a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai reportedly said Karzai “strongly supports” McChrystal and his strategy.

McChrystal is expected to reach Washington early Wednesday.

The article says that although McChrystal voted for Obama, the two failed to connect from the start. Obama called McChrystal on the carpet last fall for speaking too bluntly about his desire for more troops.

“I found that time painful,” McChrystal said in the article, on newsstands Friday. “I was selling an unsellable position.”

It quoted an adviser to McChrystal dismissing the early meeting with Obama as a “10-minute photo op.”

“Obama clearly didn’t know anything about him, who he was. The boss was pretty disappointed,” the adviser told the magazine.

Gee, Obama clueless about his military chiefs? How can that be (SUPER SNARK)?

You can read the full article here. (You also should take a look at Ed Morrissey’s piece at Hot Air).

McChrystal’s chain of command goes through David Petraeus. While Barack is ostensibly Commander-in-Chief, Petraeus is McChrystal’s immediate boss and should be disciplining his ass for this article. But that’s not going to happen. McChrystal is now a political football and will have to make some decisions. Is he going to pretend that he did not believe what he is reported as saying in the Rolling Stone article? If he does then the thing that has made McChrystal unique–a man of great integrity–will be tarnished.

The real damage here is that this distraction will ultimately make it impossible to sustain our effort in Afghanistan. I know there has been a lot of hand wringing about the continued war in Afghanistan and suggestions that we are losing. But I don’t think that’s true. In the past we always faced a late Spring/Summer offensive by the Taliban. That’s not the case this year (even though our casualties are up). The violence is confined largely to southeastern Afghanistan. We are not in danger of a military defeat.

Yet the reason we are fighting in Afghanistan has become muddled, at least in the minds of the American people. I was working last week at Fort Bragg and in conversations with two good friends, who are retired senior military officers, heard them voice the same concern, i.e., “what the hell are we doing in Afghanistan?”

Politically? That’s another problem. Stan McChrystal understood that we could not kill our way to a political settlement and proposed a strategy based on training and equipping Afghani’s to do the fighting and creating some space where the various Afghan tribes and factions could sort things out. Although we like to pretend there is a single, malevolent enemy, that is not the case. There is no equivalent of Nazi Germany lurking in the Hindu Kush. We are not able to impose a government on Afghanistan that is politically palatable to the American people. And tribes that derive their income from growing heroin poppies will continue to proliferate. We are fighting a gang war with religious overtones. There is no simple, easy, quick fix. And you can’t sell a war like that to the American people.

McChrystal is now damaged goods and this is his swan song in the Army. He has been a unique commander, almost monk like. He has made enormous personal sacrifice and led his troops from the front. He is the opposite of the political star fucker that characterizes the careers of many generals. I am sad to see his career end like this. Worst of all I think it will ultimately hurt us as a country and Afghanistan will once again become a safehaven for Islamic extremists.

  • Katmoon

Larry, now I am very nervous, why would they order more troops in, soonly? Trying to be careful here.

  • No Longer an American

I can’t wait untill this clown is out of the white house.  But I have the sneaking suspicion he will arrange it so that he’s in it for life

Afghanistan will once again become a safehaven for Islamic extremists.

LJ, While I very much respect McChrystal’s sacrifice and efforts, are you saying he is irreplaceable or he will be replaced with a less than qualified person or the current strategy he is driving has it’s prtrators to the poitn it will be changed?

Personally, if he does get his walking papers, I hope he speaks out in retirement.
A guy like that will never go quietly into the night unless he is toes up.

This is odd that he has done this twice….and I am damn sure he knows better….what could motivate him so? mmmm

  • hm

McChrystal has exposed Obama’s (and his admin) vulnerabilities and will pay the price for it. But may be not. The more important lesson here is for Obama to shape up. Everybody wants a piece of Afghanistan esp. if it is a success but who is leading it to become successful. Wanted CiC who knws a thing or two about winning.

  • sowsear

Why haven’t we heard anymore about the armada which went through the Suez towards…..?   Is that aimed only at Iran?
Will someone replace McChrystal immediately, and if so, who?

And don’t forget who was chair of the Senate committee overseeing Afghanistan, and never held ONE meeting during his 2-yr. tenure: Barack!
By that particular lack of action, alone, he has contributed to the lack of safety and support for our troops in that region..IMHO.

  • sandi78

Isn’t it amaing how quickly Ozero can act when he’s been insulted? Could his skin be any thinner? Could he be any more clueless?

I hope McChrystal resigns, because his career is surely over, but then we’re in an even worse place than we are now in Afghanistan. Maybe Oero could go over there and try doing what McChrystal does every day.

Or maybe he could just stay in his (Oval) office and be a president.

  • sowsear

What really killed McChrystal is the remark of his aide, assumed to have come from McChrystal, that the previous meeting with BO was a “10 min. photo-op” That is exactly what many of us thought too…
I don’t think BO will learn anything from this encounter, and McChrystal will have wasted everything, but I think the General’s making a “mistake” twice means he meant to say it and he meant to get out of his situation. no matter what.

  • hm

I can’t imagine him not knowing what he is doing, esp. the second time. Either he is vain and has his ego hurt or he thinks he ought to be the whistle blower for the good of something. I think he is trying to wake us up to something, like things can be better if only…and falling on his sword?

  • ~~JustMe~~

It does seem odd this is the second time McChrystal has been summoned in front of the president. A commander with an impeccable record and everything goes pear shaped since “O” came to office. Makes one wonder if one of our top commanders expresses his thoughts as many have what is really happening at the top. I understand there is protocol to follow but this again shows a great deal of uncertainty of any form of confidence towards the Whitehouse.

Militarily there is no doubt the West can win in Afghanistan. But I doubt we have the political will to do it.

We can’t win weith the rediculous deadlines and timetables and telegraphing strategy that are the mainsay of Obama & Co.

As in Vietnam, we lack the political will to continue a presence in this part of the world. But unlike Vietnam this part of the world poses a very big direct threat to the US and the West.

And if Afghanistan falls again to the Taliban that will further embolden them and the jihadists threatening Russia and China.

The immediate troubling factor in Afghanistan is that resupply of fowrard bases has been given to private contractors. These contractors a paying megam millions PER WEEK to the TALIBAN for “protection” so the convoys are not attacked while enroute to resupply US Bases.

US Tax Dollars are going to the Taliban for protection of these private contractors.

Who the fucks bright idea was that? This is privitization of government and military run seriously amuck.

The convoys need to be militay and they should be escorted by military.
But that would take additional troop presence which we know Obama & Co will never do.

So instead they are paying and supporting the Taliban so the Taliban can continue to fight the US Military.

What moron could think paying the enemy to resupply the field is a good idea?

  • Docelder

This whole Presidency is nothing more than a series of ten minute photo ops fitted in around golf, date nights and the ongoing world wide apology tour.  Wind him up like a childs see-n-say toy and watch him talk the talking points.

  • helenk

I don’t know why but ever since I first read this story all I could think about was Billy Mitchell. Why is it that when a military commander tells the truth their career is ruined? The phony that unfortunatly has the title of commander in chief is useless and would hurt the country before he would help her.

I have great respect for Gen. McCrystal. Having respect for him I cannot believe that he didn’t know what he was doing. Especially after having been called on the “carpet” once before.

I try desperately not to believe that sometimes things are not just what they seem. A simply slip of the tongue or a man who is honest simply being honest. But McCrystal didn’t get to be a General without learning how to be somewhat “political” when he had to be. Thus I think he didn’t “want” to be.

I believe there is more to this. Perhaps I’m wrong.

One thing I “know” and that is that you don’t replace a man of McCrystal’s caliber easily. Unless all you’re looking for is a yes-man. Then the replacement is like changing a finely tuned machine for a jack-in-the box.

  • ~~JustMe~~

Obama to “Shape up” how many lessons/chances does a country give to the man who was ready on day one? His own words! We are in such a vulnerable time and we are still waiting for the CIC to shape up? It needs to stop.

  • Docelder

It turned into a Vietnam, but only because the media wanted it to be another Vietnam. Then only because the media has way too much influence. Then only because the media is really a large corporate interest and corporations rule the roost. The thing is a bunch of good people died for no damn good reason if Afghanistan is Vietnamized. Not that anybody in charge gives a rat’s ass.

As Yogi Berra said,  “A leopard don’t change his stripes.’’ , and Obama isn’t ever going to become a workaholic.

McChrystal should have stepped down after they told him the rules of engagement. Who in their right mind would not call in air strikes or Artillery when our troops are in danger? “He is the opposite of the political star fucker that characterizes the careers of many generals.”

I certainly agree with that. Promotion through the ranks from colonel and above is based more on political finese than military smarts and leadership. That McCrystal represents the latter, he earns my respect.

If Obama had a brain (he doesn’t) he would realize he needs a guy like McCrystal telling him the way it is, and not painting a picture of rainbows and unicorns.

Didn’t Obama say during the campaign that he would not surround himself with yes men? (bullshit)

But we know the world Obama lives in.

  • HARP

McCrystal should immediately send this message to Barry:

    “….what could motivate him so?”

He’s a soldier’s General, not a political General. He’s motivated by concern for his troops more than getting another star.

To someone like McChrystal, Obama is a mysterious animal that is only motivated by selfishly personal reasons. McChrystal would never hesitate to sacrifice his personal concerns in favor of the concerns for his men and his country. I’m sure that meeting his exact opposite in Obama may have flummoxed him, and I can only imagine the level of frustration he must have felt knowing that the POTUS  doesn’t give a rat’s ass about this country or it’s servicemen. The disgusting and petty semantic trick of officially calling this war an “Overseas Contingency Operation” is a perfect illustration of the Obama Regime’s cavalier attitude toward a campaign where Americans are losing their lives almost daily. It must have been very difficult for McChrystal to inspire and motivate his forces when they’re getting signals that the POTUS considers them all political cannon fodder.

So much for “I will listen to my commanders on the ground” and not take the political road.

  • Craig Della Penna

I thnk Sowsear and several others are pretty close to the mark here: McChrystal is not dumb and he had the opportunity to review the interview tapes and object if he wanted to – RS made that very clear.
He chose not to alter anything, this tells me that he believes his position is untenable both personally and with respect to the Afghanistan campaign.
If he is the kind of man LJ says he is, then a couple of things must have been true before the interview was conducted: he must believe that his advice to the President is not being considered because the President no longer trusts him and he must also believe that staying in command of the Afghan campaign will be detrimental to the campaign itself and dangerous for the troops under his command.
If that is the case, then he would know that he is nothing but a political football and goat-in-waiting for the WH crew to parade out whenever they feel the need. Obama will never let him resign, he’s much too useful as PR fodder, so he is doing the only honorable thing he can do: he is forcing the CiC to fire him while at the same time he gets to tell truth to power… no wonder BO(zo) is furious.

  • honestlawyermostly

Larry, thank you for this post and the linked articles.  As much as I do not like Obama, I think he must fire General McChrystal and do so immediately.  Civilian control of the US military is bedrock.  If we allow any military commander to speak out in public against the Commander in Chief or his policies, no matter how valid that criticism may be, we are taking the first step on a very slippery slope.

  • sowsear

I would think that all Congresspersons and senators are “scutinized’ when they are elected and/or when they are appointed to such a chairmanship….

Of course the rules of engagement came from higher up that would be the Commander in Chief’s job in other administration. He likes to remind everyone every chance he gets. I won! I’m the President then start acting like one.  Unfortunately for us I think we’ve already seen his best moves and abilities as a leader

  • felizarte

Perhaps he does not want to be the general who lost the war in Afghanistan.  McChrystal’s removal puts the responsibility squarely on Obama; to move forward or retreat/withdraw.

If BP calls Obama that, Obama will just summon them for a beer summit.

If Obama has not asked McChrystal for his preference in beers, you know it is not going to go well for McChrystal. Which means it will not go well for the US military, which means it will not go well for the US.

I was surprised to hear Kerry’s comments this morning (after he spoke with the General).  It sounded like Kerry was trying to save the situation … I think he used the words that everyone should “step back” as the war (and winning it) should be the priority.  Do you think his comments will have any effect?  Obama has an opportunity to put this on track and have the necessary relationship with the General.  I don’t have much hope he will, but he does have the opportunity, it seems.

This marks the third time that Rolling Stone Magazine has published a major piece of investigative journalism that has been a big embarrassment to the Obama regime (Goldman Sachs expose, Gulf oil spill disaster, and now this).  What a surprise for this obot-oriented publication!  And this used to be a rock-and-roll magazine!  The major news publications (Time, New York Times, etc.) should hang their heads in shame.  I suppose when the truth about Thee One’s birth is finally exposed, it will first appear in Rolling Stone.

I feel no pity for McChrystal.

The military has been far to influencial over the last 9-10 years regarding U.S. foreign policy. We need to take back the hammer looking for a nail.

Many like McChrystal cannot let it go. They got us into these messes and cannot deal with us cutting bait and getting out.

The military budget this year will be near $700 billion. That is what is killing this country. That is above the $350 billion pre-9-11 number and almost 50% of the entire world’s military spending. The U.S. military budget is completely out of proportion to the threats this country faces.

If this means no further escalation of the Afghan war then good. It is a waste of time. And if it becomes a “safe haven” again we will deal with it, but there are already many safe havens around the world. Afghanstan is nothing special.

By the way I think it is a long shot that McChrystal get fired.

Did we ever.  Unfortunately, I think it is imperative for Obama to fire McChrystal precisely because Obama is such a weak, unfocused President.  If McCain were President, he could allow his generals some leeway because there would never be any doubt about who was in charge.  Obama is an empty suit and as such creates the greatest opportunity (and temptation) for the military to overstep its bounds.  With every day that passes, there is yet another glaring illustration of how disastrous the last Presidential election really was.

But that’s the problem, honestlawyer.  The quotes (with the exception of two) come from McChrystal’s aides…not the man himself.  Where has McChrystal actually “spoken out in public against the CIC or his policies”?

Stan McChrystal’s biggest mistake was not something he said.  It was giving the RS reporter access to his aides.  That’s a far cry from insubordination.

And speaking of that access, wouldn’t McChrystal have to clear the RS project with Petraeus or Gates or someone higher up?

  • Katmoon

I agree that he probably needs to fire him, but I think it will not make him look any stronger, just more intolerant of truth telling. As far as the troops go, I don’t see any move on their part of trying to overstep as a whole, perhaps everyone is simply exhausted from endless rotations for the last 8 years, in and out of war, that is being supported on the backs of only about 200,000 Americans and their families.

Creeper, creeper, creeper. You just don’t get it do you? You see we have to reform immigration first.

You need to forget about the suffering people of the Gulf region.

You also need to forget a about the trafficking, mudering, raping, and kidnapping going on as a result of said trafficking.

You also need to forget about police officers and their families being threatened in AZ.

Once you forget about all of that life is good.
    Really. Trust me.

Remember Afghan citizens had no access to news.  You could have dropped a bomb all over the place, and they wouldn’t have known about it.  That is clearly why the American “Taliban” should not be in prison.  He had no idea the American’s had invaded.  I see it as a PR ploy.  The man was clearly not interested in fighting the Americans.

They should have infiltrated with Special Forces quietly in the dead of night, offered them a Dish Network and take OBL out.  And, if Dan Rather had been any kind of a patriot, he would have taken the opportunity to jump and strangle Hussein (no, no, the other Hussein).

My husband said the same thing this morning: you don’t get to McCrystal’s level by being stupid.  I suspect there’s more than meets the public’s eye on this.  But I was fascinated by the comments on that first meeting in DC–that it was nothing more than a photo-op and that the CIC was woefully unprepared.  Remember this was after weeks of stalling on whether the President would or would not send additional troops.  The reason given?  They were studying the situation, inside out. Aind Obama didn’t know anything about the General he’d chosen for the mission?

What a complete fraud! I’ve never been a fan of either of these wars but if you decide to do it, you do it to win.  Otherwise get the hell out.  And there’s no way you can win if everyone’s on a different team. After nine years and trillions of dollars and spent lives what exactly have we accomplished? I couldn’t tell you.

This is just one more disaster for Obama to screw up.

One would think that a higher up would have cleared the “profile” piece but no one has suggested that yet.  My take on this is not so much what McChrystal is quoted as having said personally, but in what he allowed his staff to say when he knew there was a reporter present.  Assuming the article is accurate (big assumption, possibly), it left little doubt in my mind that the staff was speaking the thoughts and beliefs of “the Boss”, obviously with the permission of the Boss.  I feel badly for McChrystal just as I would any other accomplished professional whose career is damaged if not destroyed by an instance of poor judgment.  I also think this was a hit piece by RS, both in tone and substance.  But I still think that Obama must assert control immediately and, to me, that means firing McChrystal.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A federal judge in New Orleans has blocked a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling projects that was imposed in response to the massive Gulf oil spill.

Several companies that ferry people and supplies and provide other services to offshore drilling rigs had asked U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in New Orleans to overturn the moratorium.
President Barack Obama’s administration has halted the approval of any new permits for deepwater drilling and suspended drilling at 33 exploratory wells in the Gulf.
Feldman says in his ruling that the Interior Department failed to provide adequate reasoning for the moratorium. He says it seems to assume that because one rig failed, all companies and rigs doing deepwater drilling pose an imminent danger.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

Obama was asked about that, once, and his answer was that he was “too busy” to hold a meeting of the committee. Given that he only voted 1/3 as many times as Hillary, it begs the question, busy doing what?? The answer to that is in his Senate travel schedule. Off to Kenya several times, one trip was to campaign for his cousin Odinga, which is a violation of the Logan Act and also a violation of the visa terms. Kenya registered an official protest over Obama’s actions. The penalty for violating the Logan Act is up to three years in prison. Violation of the Logan Act is a felony. Applicable text below:
§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments. Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

So we have an unindicted, unconvicted felon in the White House.

Perhaps that is a reason for his inept performance, no one can tell him anything that is classified. Yeah, that’s it. Not that he is uncaring, incurious, inept, ignorant and inefficient. Must be that he can’t be given the right information because he is a huge security risk!! Uhuh, that’s it for sure.

  • Craig Della Penna

Pure speculation on my part but it looks like a ‘kabuki’ play. Everybody knows the dance and they all play along.
If he was allowed to resign, that would validate his policy objections and place the responsibility (where it belongs) squarely at Obama’s feet. BO(zo) can’t have that so I would guess that McC already tried to resign and was refused.
Then he used the RS interview gambit to make statements that must result in his dismissal for insubordination (that’s why Obama was furious – McC trumped his play).
So now they’re at the end game: McC issues apologizes to all and sundry but it’s ‘too late’ for that and his resignation is now ‘regretfully’ accepted or BO(zo) – still angry that he was outmanuvered – decides that McC must be fired to uphold the authority of civilian control of the military.

  • sowsear

I wouldn’t put it past this administration to have put out the ban knowing that it wouldn’t hold up…After all BO owes something to the oil industry and their past and future $$$upport . The ban might have made some environmentalists think he was on their side.

McArthur wanted to nuke China during the Korean war, and he said so publicly. That is a big difference from Gen. • honestlawyermostly

The wind is blowing on the house of cards and it’s getting stronger.  As sowsear said, the McChrystal problem most likely is the result of Obama’s detachment from his generals– too busy playing golf and partying.  Even though I think McChrystal should be fired, there is no way that Obama comes out of this well.  The wind picked up with the federal court’s ruling setting aside the moratorium which most likely will be upheld on appeal.  Obama chose sides in this one– the environmentalist over the economic survival of the “small people” on the Gulf coast– and rather than emergency inspections of all rigs so the production (and jobs) could continue, he shut everything down.  Bad judgment thrown back in his face.  The really strong winds will blow when and if a federal court upholds the Arizona law as constitutional.  Obama again chose sides– his theories of constitutional law (and pandering for Latino votes) against the safety and economies of the border states.  These are three major screwups: war, the economy and law and order.  Added to the existing groundswell of doubt about his competence overall, I think we may be witnessing the beginning of the fall of the house of cards.

Mexico just filed a lawsuit against the State of Arizona about the enforcement of the illegal aliens crossing into the United States.  Isn’t that just a ‘kick in the ass’ for AZ – now they will have assholder & comparable ass from Mexico suing one of the 50 states of the United States of American for enforcing a federal law that has been on the books in the US for over 70 years & the AZ law is stricter than the federal law.  WTF is going on?  Our citizens are being killed by aliens, they have overrun our borders, American citizens are barred from National Parks becuz of illegals – WTF????????????????????

This is malfeasance & is a criminal offense by the CIC – his duty is to protect American citizens and protect our borders – if he is not following the law – isn’t that impeachable?  Please??????????????????

  • FLDemFem

If the AZ law is un-constitutional then so is the Federal Law which is less specific about the circumstances in which someone must show their green card. The Federal Law says that anyone with a green card must show it to any law enforcement officer on demand, at any time. There is no proviso describing circunstances under which that demand can be made as there is in the AZ law which says that the demand can only be made in conjunction with another legal violation, be it traffic or other misdemeanor/criminal activity. The Feds say law enforcement officers can ask for the green card just because they want to, the AZ law says that the law enforcement officers must have a reason to ask for it, such proving the guys in the car that was pulled over for a broken tail light, or pulled in for disturbing the peace on a Sat. night are legal residents, etc.

I wonder if this is a sneak attack on the Federal Immigration Laws by the administration. If the AZ law is un-constitutional then the Federal Law must be as well. Unless they think they can trump states’ rights with the law suit. Either way, I don’t trust these people.

Having read the article it is clear that this is a hit piece on McChrystal”

Yep, although the article makes the O regime look weak, it is also a mostly unflattering look at McChrystal, which is immediately evident by the title: “The Runaway General.”  This title implies that the General is a loose cannon on deck and is out of the control of the chain of command.  Moreover, unless it is Al Capp speaking of Jubilation T. Cornpone, the implication that a general would be a “runaway” implies retreat and cowardice.  An ugly title!

“in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States”

I am no fan of Obama, but he had to be subverting US policy in order for this statute to apply. What was the US policy that Obama was subverting?

Did the official position of the US support Odinga’s opponent? If so this law may apply. If the US did not have an interest in the outcome of the election Obama is safe on this one.

Just read that MEXICO has filed a suit against ARIZONA to block the immigration law.  They say it is injurious to their citizens who want to “work and visit Arizona.”  Never would have happened before Bush.  We must get Obama out of office before there is nothing left of U. S. law and the Constitution.

  • honestlawyermostly

FlDemFem– you may be right.  My assumption was that Obama will go after the Arizona law on preemption grounds which would not implicate the validity of the federal statute, but if the administration makes a broader attack– void for vagueness/ due process, etc. — it truly would be a sneak attack.  Aside from preemption, though, I’m not sure of the federal government’s standing to challenge the statute.  I plead ignorance.

  • No Longer Banned in Beantown

I do not agree whatsover with any of the recommendations I have seen in regards to this. I find it astounding how quick everyone is to jump onto the “career over” narrative or Afghanistan is a failure meme. Even more, those who talk about the relationship in regards to how the military/civilian relationship should be upheld. Funny. The thing is, these people don’t give a flying fuck about said relationship. If they did, half of the things they do, that DON’T get put out would never happen.

Get real. Or better yet, let’s keep it real. When it was put out that we were not going to get a damn dime for Afghanistan. Not a fucking sound. Nothing. Nada. I don’t see anyone talking about that. Tell me, how the fuck do you complete a mission that you have to beg for every goddamn dime because everything you do is dictated by those who screech the loudest? Because no one wants to acknowledge even to themselves that everything is dictated by job security, theirs, instead of national security, the mission or anything else. Everyone sure has recommendations on what should be done. When in all actuality no one would have batted a fucking eye that WE HAVE NO GODDAMN MONEY TO FUCKING DO THE MISSION OVER THERE.

I am sure eventually we can always start rubbing two fucking sticks together and use sling shots to win the war. Since it’s apparent we wont win it with the support of the people in this country because they are too busy paying attention to the bullshit instead of looking at is actually their.

Throw in the little homilies like the way to beat terrorism is to redefine it so that it no longer exists.

Obama can do what Reagan did and call them “Freedom Fighters”. Then get the US troops out while arming the Freedom Fighters to the teeth and watch them kill each other.

That worked until Bin Laden came calling.

McChrystal’s team does not need to be motivated. The political ass wipes need motivation. They only way they get properly motivated is if Obama publically states that McChrystal was right, and was right that Obama’s staff is riddled with dorks.

If they did, half of the things they do, that DON’T get put out, would never happen.

Get real. Or better yet, let’s keep it real. When it was put out that we were not going to get a damn dime for Afghanistan. Not a fucking sound. Please, by all means, tell me which of our so called independant news outlets have reported this little fact? Why is that? Why is it they have not reported that we are not getting jack shit? Nothing. Nada.

I don’t see anyone talking about that. Tell me, how the fuck do you complete a mission that you have to beg for every goddamn dime because everything you do is dictated by those who screech the loudest?

Can you honestly tell me that before today anyone has even bothered to concern themselves with what is happening over there? Amazing. Everyone is sitting on their high horses WHILE THEIR FUCKING COUNTRIES MILITARY WITH SOLDIERS DOWNRANGE WILL DO WITHOUT!

Well, if this is indeed an ambush on McChrystal then I wonder if the setup wasn’t to get Obama out of an ugly no-win situation politically.  Maybe Craig’s idea is intuitive–we’re watching more Kabuki theater with a press agent in on the attack [setting up the interview], with frustrated and loose-lipped aides and finally a way to explain away a war that isn’t going well–blame McChrystal and make him the fall guy, insubordinate and out of control.

Mexico should read its own immigration laws and be glad we don’t automatically jail the illegals for two years and send them home much worse for wear like they do. They should also be told that it is not in their purview to dictate how this country, or any of its states, pass and enforce laws. They should enforce their own laws against drug and human trafficking before they file suit to let the traffickers into the US. Which is basically what they are doing. We should file suit right back, for damages caused by their allowing drug traffickers into the US. Figure out what their oil revenue is for a decade and set that as the damages figure. They will have to bust the drug cartels to get the money, or give us all their oil wells for a while. That would work for me..hehehe.

  • goldengrahme

Hmmm…I’ll take the ‘sword’ answer.  The military is not a democracy and the hard truth is hard to come by.  The young man recently arrested for exposing the US military’s questionable behavior in which several peaceful Iraqis were killed–including a journalist for a news outlet–risked his career and his health (given the black side of military ops), to get the truth into the public domain.  IMO, he is a hero.  Gen McChrystal is to be commended; his attitudes were expressed by way of his staff, but are certainly the consensus of most men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan.  To think otherwise is to delude ourselves.

It is up to the Amercian people to run with these events; we can sit on our hands and accept the unacceptible or back up whistleblowers–whether they expose runaway industry or run-amok military.

It’s not too late for Hillary.  It is exactly the time for her IMO.  Washington is like a place with constant rain.  An effective leader would have to be good at “slipping through the raindrops” to keep from getting soaked.  Bill and Hillary were such leaders.  Hillary’s mistake during the campaign were two important policies she enunciated which earned her the enmity of big business:  (1) vowing to look closely at all no-bid contracts; (2) discouraging outsourcing of jobs.  They are real economic solutions for the country.  But those adversely affected by such policies believed she would deliver on those promises and they could not let that happen.

  • Mandelay

I read the Rolling Stone article, too and got a creepy feeling about it.  Larry’s update on this story is soooo on the money, I fear.  The will of the people, the security of the country, they mean nothing when media and media manipulators continue to carry out their agendas.  Indeed, the members of the General’s staff should be ashamed of themselves.  And what about the soldiers over there?  Don’t they mean anything to anyone, anymore?

    Obama’s real McChrystal problem:
    Afghanistan plan in trouble

    Politico,
    by Glenn Thrush

    Original Article

    6/22/2010

Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s MacArthur Moment was more than an embarrassment for the White House – it was a reminder of just how badly Barack Obama’s “good war” in Afghanistan is going. The challenge facing Obama in responding to his loose-lipped Afghan commander has an obvious parallel in Harry Truman’s firing of Douglas MacArthur at the height of the Korean War. But it may actually be more comparable to a more chronic presidential leadership crisis — Abraham Lincoln’s dilemma during the Civil War, when he was forced to repeatedly reshuffle his general staff in the face of vacillating public opinion….

  • Military

Come on Larry. Frank and his collegues could not wait to invade Iraq. They clearly put together a ridiculous plan that had no exit. They worked hand in hand with Bush/Cheney and Rumsfled. There are more Neocons in the military then anywhere else. Any general that stood up that said Iraq was a bad idea was run out of the military. Without the support of the military, Iraq would have never happened. They were eager to go to war and use all their equipment and training and no one for a second thought of the consequences.

As for Afghanistan, there may have been valid initial reasons to target Al qaeda and the Taliban, but they had no reason to occupy. They had it right at the beginning by making this a CIA/intelligence operation, but then the military got involved in pushing for a military solution.

We may never know the extent of how much the military pushed to get us into both of these wars, but I would bet it was signficant.

There is nothing wrong with a more reasonable civilian leadership to take the power and the strategy back from the military. And if McChrystal and others cannot deal with that, then too bad. Fuck them.

The military needs to be cut down to size. They are destroying this country with their budget and their wars. If the Democrats have to take some heat from the military then again so be it.

I don’t think McChrystal’s article was premeditated. I believe McChrystal is simply a great leader with the courage to speak his convictions. While he did not speak them directly to Rolling Stone, his staff knew his convictions well and repeated them.

The Miltary from McChrystal down probably share those convictions.

But if I were a sneaky, scum-sucking, spineless, scamming swindler, that is how I would do it. Go in the back door, get a similar law declared un-constitutional and then discover, to my complete amazement that the Federal Law, which is harsher and which I have ignored and not read, is also un-constitutional.  Then I would chastize Congress for passing it in the first place..what, you guys don”t have any Constitutional lawyers on your staffs to check stuff like that?? Tsk, tsk, tsk. Then I would send down my version of an immigration law, tell them that I, the Constitutional Scholar, have vetted it and demand they pass it as is. The law will be so full of loop holes favoring the illegals that it will look like a macrame hanger for planters. Then I would add Immigration Reform to my list of “accomplishments”. Re-election will be a snap with all those new voters that love me for making them “instant Americans”.

Anyone want to bet that is what is coming down the political pike??

I just read the entire article.  This is not only a hit job on McChrystal but the entire military effort.  Now I’m more convinced the piece is is a deliberate attempt to get the civilian leadership off the hook: McChrystal has gone rogue and could we have known?

Notice even in the article that as late as May, Obama and his henchmen were praising McChrystal and the war effort, clapping backs, offering congrats and talking about the “bright lights of Kabul.” And Larry’s right, the insulting, inflammatory quotes come from third party sources–aides have reportedly said, sources close to McChrystal’s team, etc., etc.  Certainly, wouldn’t hold up in court.

These people are weasels, who only care about their own asses. And, of course, soldier4Hillary is right: Afghanistan and the whole AfPak mission has been off the radar for months and months.  We should be asking ourselves why?

I know that Obama knows Jack about the military let alone Afghanistan, but no General can criticize his Commander in public and use the media  to sound off. If he was fed up with Obama, he should have tedered his resignation with the president who no matter what- is Commander In Chief.  This is insubordination and could be subject to court martial, but that won’t happen. McChrystal will either be allowed to resign, or as the case with General Doulas Mc Arthur, he will be fired.

He has a great record, but is a very hard wired guy.  This was monumentally stupid. And of all the media, The Rolling Stone hanging around showed incredibly poor judgement. He has to go.

    Mexico asks court to
    reject Ariz. immigration law

    Associated Press,
    by Staff

    Original Article

    6/22/2010

Mexico is asking a federal court in Arizona to declare the state’s new immigration law unconstitutional. Lawyers for Mexico on Tuesday submitted a legal brief in support of a lawsuit challenging the law. The law generally requires police investigating another incident or crime to ask people about their immigration status if there’s a “reasonable suspicion” they’re in the country illegally. It also makes being in Arizona illegally a misdemeanor, and it prohibits seeking day-labor work along the state’s streets. Mexico says its interest in having consistent relations with the United States shouldn’t be frustrated by one U.S. state.

Gotcha journalism is not a secret. A General in command of Afghanistan allowing off the record remarks and his staff to sound off with Rolling Stone shows terrible judgement.

I might even agree with McChrystal, but what he permitted was incredibly stupid and incorrect on all counts.

Even if Mc C was right, he was wrong.

Chain of Command is extremely clear. Whether we lilke a President or not, the President is Commander In Chief. Even Mc C’s staff being permitted to get close to media is stupid. The General is smart enough, or should be to know what we all know.  The Press are vipers and will do almost anything to get a story especially one like this.

A well disciplined staff and a disciplined General would not allow Rolling Stone within 50 feet of them. He has to go.

Gotcha journalism is no excuse as Mc C was responsible for contolling  his staff’s exposure to the media, and actually is responsible for allowing the entire sad episode.

  • Ferd Berfle

Creeper. I understand your concern. However, as I understand it, he was only blamed because of the actions of those he commanded and not because he ordered it. It was correct to include him but there is no evidence he actually even knew about it. In the military, whether you know or not, you get some of the blame. So while I agree with you, I also disagree with you, which is giving me a headache.

Mos, Obama, Sr. was already married with one wife and a child with another on the way when he met Ann Dunham in Hawaii. Since he was legally married under British law, his marriage to Dunham was invalid. Therefore any issue of that marriage is illegitimate.

I don’t know about that, but having a son who has worked with McChrystal, I have nothing but the utmost respect for him, well except the fact that he voted for the POS CIC. That right there was STUPID! My son has nothing but good things to say about McChrystal and he has worked with him in Iraq and Afghanistan. And I know they were having some major disagreements with the ROE, which everyone claims was McChrystal, but not the way it is implemented now.

I agree with you Military. I do not think either of us or the millions of other Americans who agree with these opinions are stupid, ignorant assholes either. stupid is as stupid does. McChrstal’s aide said the president knew nothing about him. The president said the article called into question the general’s judgement. Am I wrong or did Obama appoint him to this position? Was that a mistake in judgement? Who will replace him, I wonder, if Obama accepts his resignation? During the primaries and general election, Obama said many times this is a war the US must win yet he knew nothing about the man he appointed and refused to give him what he asked for in order to win? OMG I hate war and this seems endless.

    =============================
And THAT is why I not only know but understand in a much deeper sense that you not only served but did so with distinction. You get it, candymarl. While I believe in the subordination of the military to civilian control, there are times when, even in a rigid organization such as the military, orders go awry. You cannot at the same time expect subordinates to take initiative and then tell them not to react. It simply does not work. I really believe that this was a hatchet job focused on the subordinates because a seasoned General would not have spoken out of turn in such a manner. I could be wrong and perhaps McChrystal has had enough–but I rather doubt it. He didn’t get where he is by having loose lips. Mofreover, he might actually be protecting those proteges he thinks worthy of his own censure.

    Spot on, candymarl.

Ferd——that chip ain’t goin’ nowhere. It’s here to stay.

  • sandi78

I don’t think he’s good enough for that. Martin Sheen will beat him every time!

  • goldengrahme

Under normal circumstances I might agree with the idea that our military must submit to the chain of command beginning in the White House regardless of how absurd the orders.  Certainly no military would be viable without loyalty and obeyance.

But, as evidenced in Vietnam, the mission is untenable, the reason foggy.  Why are we in the MIddle East?  Oil? We have plenty on our own continent.  So there must be another cause.  I, personally, do not buy terrorism containment.  Al Q’aeda is a CIA invention; Bin Laden, a CIA asset used to thwart USSR intervention before the Iron Curtain fell.

Didn’t Zbig Brezynsky state he was responsible for luring the Soviets into Afghanistan, which signaled the fall of their empire?  His book was entitled “The Grand Chess Board,” if memory serves, and detailed his and probably PNAC’s, designs on furthering Western
influence in South Central Asia and the Middle East.

I am no authority on anything and state this as an opinion based on what I have read; but it isn’t rocket science.  Connect the dots.  It’s all a big game to some self-important cretins; they could care less about the little people.  Obama wanted our troops to buy health insurance to cover the costs of medical problems or injuries incurred in battle.  That is the most stricking example of just how convoluted the thinking and disconnected the leadership regarding reality.

How long must we accept this skewed, inverted logic?

I think Gen McChrystal and others are figuring it out.  Lives for oil is no longer a moral or strategic position.

  • Cindy

FlDemFem—-then you’re not far from Micanopy. Lucky you! We LOVE that little town.

  • Ferd Berfle

OMG I hate war and this seems endless.OMG I hate war and this seems endless.
    ================================
It is only endless because politics inserted itself in this and the previous administration. Military personnel want to do the job and get it done in the least amount of time possible with the fewest casualties. I know that all too well. Never, ever blame the military. They are only following the orders of whatever bozo the electorate has decided to put in office.

  • sowsear

But he’ll fire up the Teleprompter anyway…

  • Ferd Berfle

After reading LJ’s update and the links, I think that this was indeed a hatchet job meant to divert attention away from our drive-by POTUS. McChrystal has been at this a long time and may be getting frustrated with the political nonsense accompanying the Afghanistan war. He has probably told his subordinates and aides how he feels, if only because perhaps he needs to let off some steam now and again as any human being would. A wannabe journnalist comes to town, as it were, and the General is ordered to speak to this person and allow his staff to also be interviewed. You have the scenario. The fucker from RS is going to make a small fortune by casting these honorable soldiers in a very bad light. True patriot, those at RS. Yeah, right.

    From Hot Air:
Only one in Obama’s administration gets much respect — and you’ll be surprised who receives it:
Part of the problem is structural: The Defense Department budget exceeds $600 billion a year, while the State Department receives only $50 billion. But part of the problem is personal: In private, Team McChrystal likes to talk shit about many of Obama’s top people on the diplomatic side. One aide calls Jim Jones, a retired four-star general and veteran of the Cold War, a “clown” who remains “stuck in 1985.” Politicians like McCain and Kerry, says another aide, “turn up, have a meeting with Karzai, criticize him at the airport press conference, then get back for the Sunday talk shows. Frankly, it’s not very helpful.” Only Hillary Clinton receives good reviews from McChrystal’s inner circle. “Hillary had Stan’s back during the strategic review,” says an adviser. “She said, ‘If Stan wants it, give him what he needs.’ ”

Montgomery and Patton were great warriors, but they listened to the chain of command. When Patton wanted to take his troops and fight the Russians, he said, “Tell Ike that all he has to do is give the orders, and we will march up and take out those Commie bastards!!” or words to that effect. Note the words, “all he has to do is give the orders“. Montgomery was arrogant and sure of himself, didn’t like to do things except his way, but when ordered not to, he obeyed orders, bitching and moaning the whole time, privately to the higher-ups, not in public. McArthur was ordered by President Truman himself to stop making public policy pronouncements and refused to do so. So Truman fired him, and rightly so. There is a big difference between asking for politically impossible orders(Patton) and complaining to the chain of command that your plan would have been better(Montgomery) and flat out disobeying a direct order from the Commander in Chief in time of war(Korean War). A very big difference.

If you still have it, you might consider building a ferrocement home, similar to this one. Ferrocement homes are hurricane, tornado and earthquake proof if shaped correctly. Here is one of the foremost architects using ferrocement technique in his buildings, Javier Senosiain. Check out his organic works..fabulous. I am posting a couple of pics of one of his houses below. This is what I am going to build, something similar to the Organic House on the web site, when the economy gets a bit better. HLM, I am one up on you, I read “The Prince”, by Machiavelli at age 12 and understood it. I now understand it much better, having re-read it as an adult. I was a diplomatic brat, and I got to see a lot of the practices described in “The Prince” up close while they were going on. Grown-ups forget that children read too, and have very big ears which hear and understand things they hear when passing peanuts and hors d’ouvres at diplomatic parties. My favorite French King is Louis XI, known as the Spider King for weaving webs that others got caught in before they realized the web was there. Rumor has it that Machiavelli was partly inspired by Louis XI even though his patronage required that he say it was wholly inspired by various Italian Dukes and Princes, such as Ludovico Medici, and such. Those guys knew how to play politics, deadly serious politics. I use what I learned from them to try to see around the corner regarding Obama’s plans for the US. It has worked rather well so far. Sort of tells you what sort of people we are dealing with, doesn’t it??

FlDemFem– I concede that reading The Prince twice– and understanding it– especially at the age of 12, trumps my sneaky, scum-sucking, and scamming swindler talents.  When I was 12, instead of learning the ways of the political world, I was fishing in the canals a few hundred miles south and east of you (WPB).  I cannot imagine how fascinating it must have been to grow up in a diplomat family.  And yes, I agree that Machiavelli should be required reading.

Obama doesn’t seem too comfortable with the troops..see how much distance he maintains from them in pics at two different events below. And if he is not giving the military the support it needs and deserves, could there be another agenda in his folder?? He did say in his book “Audacity of Hope”, written when he was a US Senator and not holding committee meetings on Afghanistan, that “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Is he doing just that by hobbling the military who are, horrors, killing Muslims?? Can’t think of an uglier political direction than dead, can you?

  • goldengrahme

From what I can figure out, the Afghan War and Iraq invasion was to secure bases in that area and build an oil pipeline from the oil rich
Caucuses ‘Stans’ countries and send it down to India for shipment to wherever.  This way, we can control the ever-needed flow of oil, i.e.,
energy–with control being the operative word.

The world runs on oil, money and drugs.

  • Armymom

Well, China got the oil in Iraq, given to them by Democratic senators by bidding process. The US didn’t even bid on them, or wasn’t allowed, I will have to find my story. Had it saved on my old computer and it died. Karzai has said that Japan gets first dibs on the loot in Afghanistan. With Russian controlling most of the oil over there, I would say it would be a good idea to have some oil to bargan with, with other countries. Russia has cut off supply several times as a way of making the countries tow the line. And as far as the bases go, we’ve built bases in Japan, Germany, S. Korea and I don’t believe we got any oil from there either. Like I said, I believed the hype before, I don’t anymore. but it sounds good coming from the code pink people to sell their BS.

He met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zabari (sp?) when he went to Bagdad in July, ’08.  The NY Post reported from Zabari that barry was there to talk privately with Iraqi officials about delaying the U.S. troop draw-down.  The only domestic coverage it appeared to get were comments from the McCain campaign.  A jr. senator presidential candidate (not even a nominee yet) telling the Iraqis that the U.S. was there illegally…until he remembered we were there under U.N. mandates.  He was in Kenya stumping for a communist/socialist.  And he was there under a diplomatic visa as a representative of the U.S. government.  I figured if that didn’t bring him low, nothing would.  And nothing has.  What is going on with this guy?

Obama doesn’t seem to realize that to do foreign policy right, you have go be very well grounded in world history. Obama doesn’t know anyone’s history but his own.

That was one of my first thoughts when across the other side of the world he could have settled it through the chain of command or even over the phone with the CiC. So what is it then? Forced or voluntary resignation? Or intent to humiliate him? Not sure.

It’s sad though. I would lay a gamble that the majority of intelligent americans agree with the General’s assessment.

Perhaps McChrystal wanted out of the mess in Afghanistan and purposely set the stage by allowing the reporter to hear what his aides were saying about Obama’s crew and the war. He must have known it would be publicized and Obama would have no other choice but to fire him.  I can’t belive McChrystal is so stupid he would have participated in these conversations before a reporter and felt the reporter would treat these damning comments as confidential!
