Wow!!

Preliminary transcript of Governor Palin’s interview with Charlie Gibson is out and there is big trouble for Barack Obiden. Charlie goes right after her on the experience question. Check this out:

GIBSON: Governor, let me start by asking you a question that I asked John McCain about you, and it is really the central question. Can you look the country in the eye and say “I have the experience and I have the ability to be not just vice president, but perhaps president of the United States of America?”

PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we’ll be ready. I’m ready.

GIBSON: And you didn’t say to yourself, “Am I experienced enough? Am I ready? Do I know enough about international affairs? Do I — will I feel comfortable enough on the national stage to do this?”

PALIN: I didn’t hesitate, no.

GIBSON: Didn’t that take some hubris?

PALIN: I — I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can’t blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can’t blink. So I didn’t blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

Now, contrast that with this mess from Joe Biden yesterday:

Not only is Hillary first rate, she is more qualified than Biden or Obama to be President or Vice President. But Barack failed that test. He failed to choose the best person to help him win. But look at McCain’s choice–Governor Palin exhibits poise, command, and resolve. And also humility. This woman is really something and her performance tonight on ABC will only fuel the flames of her popularity.

And then she said this:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side. That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world and that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights that I believe are God-given, Charlie, and I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, in my world view, is a grand — the grand plan.

GIBSON: But then are you sending your son on a task that is from God?

PALIN: I don’t know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

This woman has a gift, pure and simple.

    Electoral college comfort?

    One thing one hears all the time is that Democrats shouldn’t be worried by the national polls, because it’s the electoral college that matters, and Obama is solidly ahead there.

    Um, no.

    First of all, electoral college counts based on the most recent polls are close. Real Clear Politics currently shows Obama 217, McCain 189, 132 tossups. That’s essentially a dead heat.

    Dudes, my source at ABC news tells me that there’s a deal in the works to dump Biden and replace him with Hillary. Evidently Biden will cite some “medical” condition and step aside. Anyone else heard this? Will it work? Will people buy it?

    According to fivethirtyeight.com, if the vote was today, McCain wins popular vote by 1% and wins electoral college by a slim margin.
    They do very comprehensive poll analysis.

    I just read that the interview will be held in three parts. The first will be excerpts at 5:30 PST and then tomorrow on Good Morning America will be a little bit, and then I think the same thing as GMA on the World News. The full interview will run tomorrow (Friday) on 20/20.

    I read they’re doing it that way so that if the public thinks Gibson comes across as too harsh or too soft on Palin they can fine tune the rest of it.

    They wouldn’t dare, and if they did — it wouldn’t work. Everyone knows that it wouldn’t be a medical condition and it would only highlight the lack of judgment and decision making ability of BHO. The problem is also widespread among Democrats, not just because of BHO. Generic congressional numbers are closing and party id gap is closing as well. If Hill jumped on board, she would be going down with the sinking ship.

    The Democrats were only focus on making sure Barack Obama was the primary winner. MOst of us knew Hillary was the best person to win in the General election. Now we see that Obama is dropping in the polls and we wonder why the top demcorats deserted her side so fast in the primaries and endorsed Obama.

    The Dems ran a race for the primaries only. The GOP ran a race for the best person to win in the GE.

    It’s early yet, but I think we may be seeing the emergence of the U.S. equivalent of Margaret Thatcher. I’ve always said that if Margaret Thatcher had been an American, I would have voted for her without hesitation. I’m hoping that Sarah Palin ultimately proves to have the same kind of grit that “The Iron Lady” had.

    I agree. She does seem to have a gift for politics. It’s enough to give you hope in the political system again. This sounds like the interviews and articles I’ve been reading. Yes, she has some positions that are not the liberal positions–she is a Republican–but she does not seem like a person who has lost sight of the fact that in this country it’s unconstitutional to force your personal opinion and beliefs on other Americans. She is impressive. No wonder the corrupt Democrats are panicked.

    If Obama had a brain he’d ignore McCain’s campaign spots and start talking about what his positions are, what he’s going to do for the country, but I think he can’t because he doesn’t know squat. He’s the worst sort of Manchurian Candidate.

    Have you ever looked up the word monger? It refers to a person promoting something undesirable or discreditable. Hence, if you believe the Iraq War to be undesirable or discreditable, warmongering would be a proper description of the enthusiastic promotion of that war.

    George W. Bush, for example, was warmongering when he promoted the invasion of Iraq and convinced the American people that that particular was was in the national interest. He was also consciously lying through his damn hat, but that is a separate issue.

    I was over at TL. Someone said that the after lunch press meet was uncomfortable… Clinton said he will be going out to campaign after his global initiative is over and Obama said he’s going to put him to work. If they had something going, I think their relationship would have changed, but I haven’t seen the press meet yet.

    Conspiracy? They are still uncomfortable as Obama is holding back on dumping Biden and Bill won’t go out until Clinton is on the ticket. bwahaha.

    Strange as it may seem to those who supported Clinton and now support McCain, yes, I not only voted for Clinton (in California) but I donated slightly over $1,000 to her campaign. I think she is remarkable! And I can’t wait to see what she does with the rest of her political career. Of course, in the blogosphere, most of us are anonymous.     to smear Gov. Palin as some religious whack job is to smear Thomas Jefferson himself. IMHO, Gov. Palin cherishes the history and ideals of why this country exists and its uniqueness among all others in that these basic rights are vested in the people to whom the government is accountable and not, as in the Civil Law countries of Europe, vested in the government to be given and taken away as government sees fit. Even in the other Common Law countries of the UK Commonwealth, these rights are vested in the Crown, as set forth in the Magna Carta, to be dispensed to the subjects as the Crown sees fit.

    I saw the interview; I think they are showing a little more later this evening. I thought she handles her self very well. She didn’t know what the “Bush plan” was, but as a VP I don’t expect her to know the answer to very question. She was confident, she was informatived and this is no “brainless Barbi” as some would like to paint her. I think it’s obvious that Charlie Gibson is not in favor as VP, but that would be true of the entire U.S. mainstream Media.

    Not all of us are that excited to vote for either Obama or McCain. Please remember to allow room for disension. Maintaining a certain respectful tone in debate is a good thing, imo.

She didn’t knock it out of the park, and she had a few lines that will come back to haunt here, notably that Russia’s attach of Georgia was unprovoked, she seemed unsteady when asked if she believed in the Bush Doctrine (and then he smarmily schooled her on it), and then the Israel question.

She was all hunched over, her face in profile, her hair like a schoolgirl’s. Maybe they set up the interview in such a way that Sarah could not appear to be emasculating Charlie. She was articulate but I think she dodged the question, “is the war a task from God”. Sarah, I hope you were just getting warmed up. I want McCain to win!

    The only ones who have come close were Charlie and George Stephanopoulos during the debate, and the pseudo-tough interview by O’Reilly. O’Reilly tried to hit him hard, but O’Reilly is so wrapped up in O’Reilly that it could have been done more seriously. As I have said elsewhere on this blog, Obama tried to co-opt O’Reilly, and he seemed somewhat vulnerable to having the really cool kid (BHO) talk to him.

    So in a word, NO! No one has seriously interviews Obama with hard follow-ups or with skepticism of his platitudes and BS.

    Perhaps reading the NATO Treaty — and how it has evolved over the decades — might clarify. There’s a good article on Wikipedia to start … and more info all over the Internet. Bottom line: if we cannot honor our agreements with out allies, how can we expect to have any allies? Do we allow Russia to “march into” any country it wants to annex while we watch, like they did in 1939? When a big power behaves in this manner, unchecked, war is sure to follow. Nip it in the bud, diplomacy, economic pressures, etc. Russia is pressuring the European allies with the threat of cutting off oil, the oil they need to keep from freezing this winter. What do the allies do? Do they say “OK, Putin, if you let us stay warm this winter, you can have Georgia. OK, not enough? You can have Ukraine. Not enough? OK, take what you need and reconstitute the Soviet Union.” And when does it stop? War might very well be in our future. We don’t want to provoke it but we don’t want to let Russia swallow up sovereign nations while we wring our hands hand hope for the best. Palin said that war should be the last option — but it is an option. It better be a serious option or we’ll be singing, dancing and talking ourselves blue n the face, giving slide shows at the U.N., unless we make it clear that the behavior of Hitler and Stalin have no place in this world.

A person being interviewed one-on-one in the same room as the interviewer is always taped at an angle and never looking straight into the camera. If the interview is via remote then the person being interviewed looks straight into the camera.

    Re the ABC interview: Gibson’s body language oozed condescension and the dislike in his voice was palpable. The interrogation he attempted was designed to do nothing more than trip Gov. Palin as hard and as fast as he could. “Is Iran an existential threat to Israel?” Existential??? “What is the Bush doctrine?” (I the great Charles Gibson know but you, you silly female hockey mom, surely don’t.) I thought she came through it with head held high and colors flying. I also think he brought another few hundred thousand Hillary voters into the Republican fold. I hope we see a side by side video of Gibson interviewing Obama and Palin. The differences should be a revelation.

    I was referring to the nasty comments I read when Larry was covering a story about Obama having gay sex with a man who later showed up murdered. That man was a musician or choral member in the Jeremiah Wright church. I objected to the videos (in Spanish) that supposedly substantiated those suspicions and were being touted by another commenter, but those videos actually deflated the rumors. Larry quickly dropped the story.

    As a gay person myself, I suppose I am a bit more sensitive to veiled slurs about homosexuals than some straight folks might be. I found that story baseless and a waste of much needed ammo against Obama at that point when Hillary was still fighting. And I found the comments section rife with dismissive, anti-gay comments about gay men.

    On other stories I’ve found some of the comments racist. But no, I don’t think at all that anyone who is uncomfortable voting for Obama is feeling that way because they are racist. His inexperience on the international and national stage is reason enough to be discomfited.

    After much agonizing, I have finally decided to vote for Obama over McCain. I certainly respect others who choose the opposite path.

We have replaced a tyrant who kept sectarian peace at the point of a gun with an occuying American army that keeps the peace at the point of a gun. Except now it’s costing us $10 billion a month, and now the military foil against Iran is us instead of Saddam. McCain’s plan for a final victory there is as short on details as his economic recovery plan for the United States.

    Bush isn’t a strawman either. He created the entire mess, which he will now pass on to the next president. He hopes to pass it on to someone who thinks about it the same way he did.

    I have not seen the interview yet but have read the transcript twice. Governor Palin comes across as incredibly competent and level-headed. Aside from the disaster Obama is becoming and the shame Biden must feel to be tied to him on the same ticket, I’m sure Biden clearly sees he’s outclassed by Palin. No wonder he’s commenting that Clinton would have been a better VP choice.

    Yes, her answers were cut off, but that’s normal. What I noticed, however, was that the editing of the interview was very choppy, which made the segment look unprofessional. It’s obvious that they had to rush to get the thing on the air. There was one visible jump cut, which is a major no-no, and some b-roll of troops was awkwardly inserted for a too short period when she was talking about her son going to Iraq. I’m sure that some hands will be smacked at ABC over this.

    Obama should have chosen Hillary Clinton as his running partner, but now it is too late and the damage is done. Many Clinton supporters are moving into the McCain/Palin column. I suppose that insulting Hillary Clinton and her supporters was not as good an idea as was originally thought?

    Even today’s luncheon between Obama and Bill Clinton was obviously not wholly successful as we can all see that Bill Clinton told Obama that he would be available to work for his campaign as soon as he is finished with his own business—sometime in the next month. LOL the only people who won’t see that as a slam on Obama are the oafs who thought that Obama was not referencing Gov. Palin when he made his now infamous “Palin Is a Pig in Listick Speech”.

    There was a fascinating discussion at the Washington Post chat today with the reporter who covered yesterday’s Palin-McCain visit to Fairfax VA. Marc Fisher, the reporter, is pretty moderate. He had some startling things to say:

    Marc Fisher: Obviously a rally like yesterday’s draws mostly hard-core supporters. But I was surprised by how many people I spoke to — especially women — who had been anywhere from lukewarm to actively antagonistic to McCain before the Palin pick. And there were many independents and Democrats (funny how so many people continue to call themselves Democrats and when I ask them when they last voted for a Dem for president, they have to reach back to Carter or McGovern) as well, including quite a few people who had been surprised to find themselves leaning to or supporting Hillary Clinton and now are fascinated by Palin.

    Separately, I spent a chunk of time in some western Fairfax neighborhoods talking to random voters, quite a few of whom were in the process of making the Hillary to Palin switch, and that informed my thinking about the whole larger Palin phenomenon.

    But if you had been with me at the rally, you would have taken a step back as you heard women who created their own businesses and who very much believe that women get a raw deal in this society arguing that Palin’s story is their story, and that Palin’s trumpeting of her ability to balance family and work is every bit as important a feminist statement as Hillary Clinton’s talk about cracking up the glass ceiling.

    But how can such women be for someone who is anti-abortion and a social conservative and so on? In most of my conversations with the Clinton-to-Palin switchers, their conclusion — quite reasonably given the last three decades of American history — is that abortion is largely a dead issue, that with an enormous percentage of Americans in support of at least some form of abortion rights, and with 20 years of Reagan/Bush/Bush presidencies essentially just paying lip service to their fundamentalist Christian base on the issue of abortion, the right seems fixed. Maybe they’re wrong, but that’s their reading of the situation. And they are, as I’ve said here several times, driven far more by personality and character than by issues.

    I ran into very few reflexive McCain-Palin supporters at yesterday’s rally — of course, there are dyed in the wool Republicans who were there because that’s their party and they believe in its principles or have spent their lives working for its candidates. But far more frequently, my conversations were with people who were taking this choice very seriously, and who really dislike Bush and the war, and who had surprised themselves by being very much attracted to either Hillary Clinton or Obama back last spring, but who have been moving over to the R side, either because they fear that only the Republicans will protect us from terrorism — an issue on which the Democrats still don’t make an emotionally convincing case — or because they see something that connects in Sarah Palin.

    These comments by Fisher seem like very bad news for Obama. And it is typical of what my wife and I, both of whom gave money to Clinton, feel about McCain and Palin now. We’re edging toward them, and we’re definitely not voting for Obama.

    These “satellite states” and occupied nations had been free. The country of my grandparents had just begun to build after it had finally wrested its freedom in 1918.

    20 years later my entire family was split into the groups mentioned above. They did not want to leave but had to. They were the price that was paid for the freedom and relative peace of the Western European Nations and the US. When what was left of my family was finally permitted to come to the US, after having spent much time in DP camps whose Allied overseers sold these peoples food and any packages they received on the black market, one of them was immediately drafted into the army as a flight surgeon, without having US citizenship. He gave the army more than 20 years.

    And those countries know, after having gained their freedom mostly on their own, beginning with Lithuania’s resistance, and the Baltics Singing revolution, and having paid for that freedom with their blood (check out the January events in Lithuania in 1991) that that freedom is so fragile. They know that no one will defend them. That no one will stand up to Russia and Putin. They are resigned and cynical, knowing that their only strategic importance lies in becoming missile centers for NATO.

    Its a good thing, that unlike you who considers these people unworthy, many who escaped with nothing, and lost so much, did not let their bitterness and anger get the best of them. They contributed to this country, defended this their adopted homeland, and its people through times of peace and war. And they cared about others who were not connected to them, did not have to be important to them, and in fact may have caused them greater loss-members of my family are listed at Yad Vashem.

    Russia knows full well that it cannot engage in a thermonuclear war without hurting itself and its people immensely. The Russian character is more Asian than European and they value strength and “manliness”. Why do you think Putin is such a hero? Why Russian teens swoon for him? He is strong and that is what they respect. They would just love Obama as president, not only because he has shared their political philosophy for decades, but because he is weak and apologetic for his country. Putin does not share the “peace and negotiations” philosophy. Thus without a balance of power there will be no peace in Europe or elsewhere. Putting a strong leader at the helm that has experience may not be what Russia wants, but it is what Russia will respect, as will other nations. And it may just be enough to prevent further occupations and wars.

    With everyone rattling their sabres, including N. Korea possibly again, a tried and true, strong leader is needed. Obama is not it. Hillary could have been it, with an equally strong VP because she is tough and respected. Between McCain and Obama, McCain is the better choice.

    I lived in Berlin for many years and could see the wall from my window including someone getting shot by the East German guards while trying to climb the wall. I visited several countries behind the “Iron Curtain” on an academic travel. Everything was controlled- as in Animal Fram, some people were more equal than others. Loyalty to the party gave you everything. Just turn in a few people to the KGB for interrogation and torture. Just turn your face away when one prty one candidate elections took place an 99% of the people voted for that one party one candidate.

    Kids from the schools we visited were not allowed to talk to us. One night we said them looking in the windows of the hotel and went outside to meet them. You’ve got oranges?? they said. We understood then that aside from no freedom, there was little on their food plates otehr than potatoes etc. They invited us to a sort of club. When the spies came in (students ho worked for the party and reported anything said not in line with the party line) we had to shut up. I will never forget what they told us about their lives, how much they wanted to get out, and the look on their faces when we emptied our pockets of oranges.

    It was a risky thing to do, but I was young and wanted so much to learn the truth for myself.I did. Freedom comes at a very high price.

And that I don’t imagine getting to vote for Clinton or any other woman for general election presidency any time soon? It sucks. For me, McCain/Palin sucks more. My extended family is voting all over the map in this election. Nobody is enthusiastic about their choices.

    A lot of these young voters have no sense of history – zero, zip, nada. History began for them at the Clinton impeachment trial, and ends with the current Bush regime.

    But idealogically, they align with the Shia in Iraq, and always have, even under Saddam.

With regard to the Russia/not provoked; I think you could argue whether or not there was provocation for them to cross an internationally recognized boundary to defend Russia. There was probably provocation for them to be pissed but not sure that was provocation for a military assault on the scale that followed. Georgia did not cross into Russia.

It is very easy for OPEC or Chavez to hold that oil over our heads as oil gets scarcer and scarcer….it will become a game of the have and have nots. The haves will play the game to see which country will pay them the most money….in hopes of bankrupting that country ie USA.

    I wish people would learn to understand the fact that energy is the weakest part of our national security. I am certainly impressed with Palin’s stand on Georgia. It is time to bring that country into the fold. Let’s stop leaving them out in the cold. Russia is a meanie….and under Putin/Mevedev they are a danger as is I ran….

    My take on the inteview:

    The video showed a well composed Palin who did her best with a condescending arrogant Gibson. Gibson was probably trying to make peace with the Obamans with this interview.

    The transcript shows an intelligent woman who refuses to be put in a corner. She answered the questions intelligently. Given the McCain campaigns desire to separate themselves from Bush, Gibson’s question seemed to be a ploy to try to tie her to Bush in some way (you know, the Obama mantra McCain=Bush). She worked to hold him off and succeeded even at the end. She did not fall into the trap at first about the Bush doctrine (I believe she knows it well), relegating it to a short answer “HIS World View” emphasis on “his”. But Gibson kept pressing. She still tried to keep it general and separate from her. Finally after more pressure from Gibson she gave the consimmate political answer: all options are on the table. She never once said something directly against Bush or for Bush. Well done.

    I don’t know about you guys but the version I saw was horrible because the voice did not match the video. It was off and it looked like when you watch those spaghetti westerns when they’re in a different language and the lips don’t move with is being said.

    Due to that problem the answers were really choppy so the real interview seemed like Charlie wasn’t really there and she was answering questions from a remote location. It was a very weird experience.

    Yes, the side angle shots of her back instead of on her face I think were contrived. She shouldn’t have agreed to go with ABC because they haven’t exactly been in her corner either and I think they did a bad, choppy editing job.

    I agree. McCain is far more articulate and personable than Obama generally is in an interview. I am getting to like the guy more and more.

    As for Sarah, I thought that she did really well for her first time out even though foreign policy is not her forte. I simply ask why did Gibson start with that particular subject? Seems like a setup to me. I do believe that the Press is trying to destroy this woman as soon as possible though and that she will have to be super human in order to survive.

    I watched the interview and she has her own style of answering questions. Charlie Gibson tried to pin her down on the question of whether the US has every right to invade or bomb Pakistan.. She danced around and did not answer directly but the gist of her answer was that she agrees with the Bush doctrine of preemptive strike.. We have every right to strike at anyone before they even strike us…Tough talk and delivered like a politician.

    While I do not agree with this policy, she is emphatic and did not miss a beat in giving answers to Charlie Gibson. Typical politician talk.

    What is impressive is that she was not rattled not like Obama when he appeared at the Saddle Back Mountain interview. She did not stutter just like Obama does.. whose statement is calculating and measured.

    Again, it did not mean that I agree with her.. Just saying that she is a politician through and through and also a smart politician.

She knew what she was talking about, she was decisive, clear, straight forward, NO BS, she did NOT once circumvent any question….Biden…be careful…she’ll tear you apart…Gibson, I noted what you tried to do but it is your job..I respect that Sir…but you must also admit and be honest PLEASE….she gets a Gold Medal.

    She really didn’t seem presidential. She answered the questions in a confident, straightforward way, without any ahs, ums, uhs, you knows or other stammering gibberish. :-)

    Seriously, I thought she did very, very well. On a scale from 1 to 10, I’d give her about a 9.

    She handled the loaded “God’s will” questions extremely well. She untwisted her words that Gibson and the Liberal loons had been twisting for days, without compromising what she believes and sounded very reasonable and strong in her faith.

    The only real “slip-up” was not knowing what the “Bush Doctrine” is.

    I thought she did a great job stating her position about whether we have the right to preemptive strikes, and didn’t let Gibson pin her down to a straight and overly simplistic yes or no.

    I am nitpickng, but IMO, she really would have knocked the ball out of the park, if she turned it into a hypothetical like, “Well, if we had airtight intelligence that Osama Bin Laden was there and his group was about to unlease a nuclear attack, of coruse. But if we only had vague rumors, of vague threats, course not.”

    Also, she really should work on pronouncing “new-clee-ur” not newclur”. I know the pronunciation does not reflect on her intelligence, but some might see it that way, and more important it will remind people of Bush.

    Her steadfast answer about not second guessing what Israel needs to do to defend itself against Iran was impressive as well.

    Overall, she handled a lot of VERY tough questions, with tough followups, extremely well.

    Neither Biden or especially Obama could stand up half as well to that type of grilling. There were no softballs at all.

    Wow, I’ve never had the delicious pleasure of being called an Obot or a Kos Obot for that matter! That made me smile.

    No, I’m Hillary supporter through and through, probably always will be. (And ruefully poorer in the pocketbook for it!) :-) But even Hillary has decided to work for Obama. Her decision (whatever her motivations) had a big effect on me, as did McCain’s positions on just about every issue.

    I respect Palin for her accomplishments thusfar, but again, it’s her actions in office and her beliefs about gays and lesbians, women’s bodies when pregnant, what to do with oil surplus monies — all things I disagree with her on– that further my distance from McCain.

    I guess we all have to make own peace and vote for whomever we feel is less dangerous to our country or just less dangerous to ourselves. Rightly or wrongly, I feel vulnerable to the religous right that provides the Republican base. For instance, this November in California, Prop. 8 will ban gay marriage by amending the state constitution. That type of thing is some of what informs my decision not to vote for McCain/Palin, even though I find both appealing as people.

    Not voting for me would be just ducking the issue. I certainly respect people’s views here that Obama is dangerous, that the election was stolen, etc. I just don’t happen to weight the same set of facts in the same way. I think that happens a lot with people, even when they agree on the same facts.

    Lastly, and I apologize for the long-windedness here, I am not leaving this blog. Though I usually only read, I will still occasionally comment.

    Obama is aging before our eyes, and this is only as a presidential candidate, not president. Tonight on the presidential forum he sounded like an overqualified social do gooder. Nothing wrong with that but his inability to close the deal arises from his lack of clarity, his indecisveness, and ultimately his lack of convincing arguments. This man does not have what it takes to be a leader, Palin does. And let’s remember, because Obama seems to forget, she’s only running for VP.

    Again, I agree with you. I have been appalled at what “feminist” friends of mine have said about Palin — like how having five children — one pregnant teen and another Down-syndrome baby disqualifies her from truly commiting herself to the veep job. Absolute bullshit, of course. I told my mother so, but more nicely. :-)

    Told her that in the VP job any person would have more salary, resources, and staff to help with all that comes with caring for a special needs baby. Plus husband could probably be a huge help in caring for the child. I haven’t heard that argument anywhere — perhaps it’s not politically wise, but I think it’s true.

    No, what’s wrong with Palin is her political positions. If a person agrees with her or simply thinks that her positions on certain issues are not deal-breakers, then vote for her. But, if you believe as I do, that restricting abortion, reluctantly approving state benefits to unmarried partners, shooting animals from helicopters, distributing oil money directly to constituents rather than building long-term programs like public education with that money, or going for lots of federal earmarks while furthering the myth of Western individualism/libertarianism are the wrong positions, then don’t vote for her.

    I wish the pols and the so-called feminists would get down to business about Palin. The stuff so far from them has been disgraceful.

I will not vote a person with 143 days of senate experience a part time state senator, who when he was not voting “present”, was out and about ripping poor people off and getting kickbacks.

    I voted for McCain in the 2000 primaries. I will vote for McCain this year, but not because Hillary is not in the race. It will be because, McCain, in spite of his “frailties” he has demonstrated a commitment to this country where BO has done the opposite.

    Mitchell, said (I paraphrase) “sometimes you have to blink, that is how diplomacy works.”

    What would the world be like if FDR or Harry Truman blinked during WWII?

    She was very, very good, not perfect, but very, very good. No excuses needed!

    It really puzzles me when Obama stammers and stutters and gives weak answers in an interview (Saddleback was a classic example, but he is like that in every interview I’ve seen), and Obamabots heap nothing but lavish praise on him.

    They make comments like, “The pauses and ums and uhs really made him look thoughtful!”

    No, they make him look tenative, unprepared and a bit slow witted.

    I have never seen Obama perform anywher near as well as Palin did tonight,in an interview. A teleprompter aide speech, certainly, but never in an interview, debate or any format where he is forced to speak without a script.

They are both women and everyone knows a woman who is governor at the age of fourty four has to be “power hungry and conniving”. What is a man of the same age and same position called? A talented politician. Go back in history to the 90s and look at some of the comments by the far right about Hillary and she has grown into a stronger person because of it.

    Your replies to everyone on this blog with whom you disagree are very disrespectful, full of invective and name-calling. Why is that?

    You remind me of a typical road rage driver — lots of obscene gestures and a complete lack of comprehension as to why other drivers might be doing the seemingly stupid things they are doing. Everybody outside your armored vehicle is an idiot, and you feel strangely at liberty to insult them.

    Were you face to face on a sidewalk, you probably would find a way to moderate your anger, to be polite and work things out. Otherwise you’d eventually end up in jail or on the wrong end of a punch or something worse. You know, 4 out of San Francisco’s 100 or so homicides last year were road rage related?

    So while you conduct yourself in this manner in an online space, a far less volatile place than the street, you are mistaken to think that it is okay to behave as you do. We should treat one another with the same respect, or at least courtesy, as we would in face to face encounters. I find commenters like you to be cowards in real life. Get a grip on your anger.

    Do you honestly believe that BO is more ready than Palin? If any journalist had the temerity to question him as Gibson did Palin, we’d be hearing his whining all over the airways. Also, where exactly had BO traveled as an adult? Pakistan? For what? African to visit his relatives and support his radical cousin? Oh, yeah. And the World Tour this summer. Just no visit to the troops. Does this experience make him ready?

    You don’t see the double standard?

    Before the Palin pick, LJ’s main problem with Obama (as well as the GOP’s main talking point) was his inexperience and how dangerous things would be if he were in charge.

    Now that Palin has energized the base, they have co-opted Obama’s message and are now pretending that they can bring change to Washington. (You have to really drinking the Kool-Aid to believe this.)

    But what about Palin and her complete inexperience? Alaska being near Russia is laughable.

    As for LJ, c’mon man, you’re better than this blog. Wake up.

    I love how everything is receiving new definitions and interpretations in this election. Racist, sexist, lipstick on pigs and now “a task that is from God” means “let us pray that we are on God’s side.”

    I can’t keep up with all the new definitions and interpretations. I hope someone is going to publish a dictionary.

    I’m no Senator Biden fan, but I don’t think he would try to make that stretch. Senator Obama probably wouldn’t even try.

    Governor Palin isn’t standing by her words. I’ve been standing off to the side of her bandwagon, researching, considering and mulling. Yesterday she didn’t do well into turning me into a lipstick sign waving Palin supporter. We’ll see if she does better tonight.
