In Massachusetts, Ed O’Reilly Works To Defeat John Kerry

Whether or not Ed O’Reilly, criminal defense attorney, former lobsterman, fireman and all-around salt of the earth, can defeat the arrogant, elitist Junior Senator John Kerry in this Tuesday’s primary, I have to take a moment to make some noise on behalf of this man. I deeply appreciate his effort. Apparently, I’m not the only one who does.

Despite Kerry’s literally running away from having any debates with O’Reilly – I guess John thinks he’s too good to have to explain himself to his constituents after 24 years in the Senate – several papers have come out to endorse O’Reilly and encourage everyone possible not to accept Kerry’s win as a fait accompli, and get to the polls on Tuesday.

Surely, I can think of no better way to send shockwaves through the Democratic Party – particularly to Pelosi, Dean, Brazile, Reid et al; i.e., the wackos who are currently holding the Party hostage, than to tell John Kerry his days in the Senate are numbered.

Last month, I wrote a piece John Kerry Proves the DNC Cannot Pick a Winner. Please take a look if you missed it the first time, so you can better see why I have little use for John Kerry these days.

The Editorial Board of The Boston Herald, a paper which has time and time again connected with the working people of Massachusetts, endorsed Ed O’Reilly in Friday’s edition:

There is a reason 24-year-incumbent Sen. John Kerry has an opponent in this Tuesday’s Democratic primary, and frankly it has little to do with the war in Iraq and Kerry’s convoluted and frequently tortured stand on it.

O’Reilly is an engaging populist with a down-home touch…he has worked hard to build the kind of bridges with communities and local officials that Kerry has for too long neglected. When was the last time (or the first time) John Kerry attended the Leominster Stroll or visited a firehouse or a ham and bean supper in the Berkshires? We will say what so many people in Massachusetts have whispered for so very long: John Kerry needs to pay far more attention to the people who have sent him to Washington year after year than he has in the past. And if voters want to send him that message by casting a vote for Ed O’Reilly – well, we can’t disagree.

The Belmont Citizen Herald has this to say:

Gloucester attorney Ed O’Reilly is to be commended for attempting a left-flank challenge in the U.S. Senate race. He has earned your vote for having the guts and integrity to stick his neck out and run …

As well, what difference does seniority make when you’re flat out wrong? Voters should also be incensed by the arrogance of power shown by the incumbent who was too busy partying on Nantucket this summer while everyone in the real world has had to deal with pinched pocketbooks and an unstable world. All the silly handshaking events around the state don’t make up for being so out of touch at such a critical time in our nation’s history.

WBZ’s Jon Keller, a Belmont resident, should also be thanked for figuring out a way to corner the incumbent for 20 minutes to answer a few questions in a Sunday morning debate last week. But it was all too little, too late.

There are many other blog sites and smaller papers getting the word out on Mr. O’Reilly. Among other complaints, John Kerry’s blatant disregard of the will of the voters in the MA presidential primary, who chose Hillary Clinton by a large margin, and his in your face support of Senator Obama has angered many. And there are plenty out there aching for payback. More important, many constituents are voicing their displeasure at his out-of-touch, out-of-reach behavior.

I had the opportunity to have several email exchanges with Ed myself and was so pleased he took the time to write and tell me about himself. His frank communication and down-to-earth demeanor impressed me and I believe that is precisely the type of person we need in the Senate. Obviously, John Kerry and his band of elitist brothers – and sisters, like Claire McCaskill, for example, really have no understanding of a broad spectrum of the needs, agenda, or outrage of a good part of the Democratic base, or disaffected voters of any Party. Why would we want them representing us on a state or national level?

Lawyers Weekly asks, “Who Is Ed O’Reilly?”

The product of a large, politically active family, O’Reilly likes to remind people that he had to make his own way in the world. “I was born into a housing project,” he says. “I was just a regular kid; I went to Watertown public schools; I put myself through college. That’s the big difference between me and Kerry. The big difference is that I know what it’s like to work for a living.”

Prof. Heidi Li Feldman, co-founder of the wonderful Denver Group likewise became interested in Ed’s campaign and reached out to him. Ms. Feldman is a courageous and whip-smart woman for whom I have a great deal of respect. She sat down for a lunch with Ed O’Reilly and her impressions upon meeting him convinced her to likewise offer up her endorsement:

[A]ny legitimate Democratic candidate, especially one who understands and embraces the idea of genuinely universal health care and the mechanics of what has to be done to achieve it, deserved whatever podium I could provide, particularly if the candidate was running against a well-heeled, very powerful opponent such as John Kerry.

My sense of Ed is that he judges people based on intuition, honed by years of criminal law practice. He is also a true raconteur …. But like all truly good storytellers, his stories have a point: He made me understand what it is like to run against a Goliath of an opponent; what made him lose faith in Kerry, how he felt that Kerry’s inattention to Massachusetts had become excessive.

Ed has no pretensions, no airs. He would be a true progressive in the U.S. Senate.

Best of all, let’s hear the words of Ed’s own campaign:

Instead of a bag full of wind, wouldn’t it be nice to have a breath of fresh air?

I couldn’t have said it better.

Note from Ed’s Campaign Staff:
You can really help make Ed our next U.S. Senator by volunteering at the polls on Tuesday or by doing visibilities this weekend. Just a couple of hours of your time can make a huge difference! Please call Rebecca Kennedy at 617 924-2008.

  • jnm594

I will hope and pray that he wins!

    • NoTrollZone

tis a trivial point but Ed actually looks like a young kennedy. Not an old Kennedy like the liquor stretched bag that is Teddy. But a young, idealistic, let’s get American moving, Kennedy.
Also the contact is a “Rebecca Kennedy.”
      could be portents…

      • Susan

The first time I saw him, I immediately thought of Joe Kennedy, also. Hopefully that will work in his favor – and hopefully enough people saw him during what seems like a mini-news blackout here in MA – you would barely notice Kerry even has a challenger (as he would have preferred, going by his undemocratic try to keep Ed off the MA ballot), the way the press ignores it.

        GO ED!

  • workingclass artist

TRIUMPH OF THE WORKINGCLASS POLITICANS….Would’nt that be something ?
Good Article Ani… Maybe this could be a trend ?

    • Jackie

Wow wouldn’t he be a good addition to Hillary in the Senate–he sounds a lot like Sarah Palin as well.

They would make a formidable team.

  • Shainzona

    Rise. Ed. Rise.

  • Paul3triple

We should make calls for O’rielly if we can. If he wins that would send a huge blow to democrats.
Kerry was one of O’bags first supporters.
That would scare them shitless, Obama is a liberal in the mold of Kerry and Carter.
McCain/Palin are running on a conservative populist message, I hope this guy beats kerry.
It would be great to see that loser gone.

I’ll be voting for Ed this upcoming week. I just want to say, it’s not about getting even for Clinton – although that adds a little spice to the sauce. Ed Reilly is a REAL populist. His platform is rock solid old style Democrat. I have for years voted for Kennedy and Kerry and I do it because they are good men. But so is Reilly. I happen to think Reilly has a lot of good FRESH ideas. Reilly reprensents the Democratic Party I grew up with – the party that was for the working class. He doesn’t have the intellectual purity that seems to be the demand of the Chicago DNC. Reilly actually cares about working people.

    • Steve1

Ellen, I hope the Dems in Ma. truely reflect upon this vote. If we want to send a message to the elites, to Soetoro, we need to knock Kerry out! If our women Dems want respect than I encourage all Dems to vote for Ed. The party must realize that it aint business as usual.

    • Ani

      Ellen,

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is great to have a testimonial from someone who is actually in MA.

I am really glad to hear your feelings about him echo Heidi’s and my initial impressions.

      Go Ed!!

    • Shainzona

Any polls out showing how well Ed is doing?

    • http://mccaindemocrats.wordpress.com/ 30yrdem-not any more

That is what we need to build our party back.

Thank you for voting for a good man.

I feel like I should say more to thank you. You are helping build a strong new Democratic Party!!!

  • catdancer

Fine article, Ani. Thanks. As a born and bred Vineyarder, I know from John Kerry. He is all wind. Please, remind me again what Kerry and Kennedy have done in the last fifteen or twenty years for America and the citizens of Massachusetts? Not too much, except for empty rhetoric and much posturing.

Since both Kerry & Kennedy supported Bambam…against the overwhelming wishes of the Mass electorate who VOTED for Hillary, they both need slapping down.

I want Ed. Let Kerry drink Heinz. Go Ed!

How refreshing it this election helps the Democrats get back to their loving American roots and what make them Democrats….care of the working class.

This election may also in fact bring the Republican party back to its roots. It has become corrupt.
Sarah is a breath of fresh air.

God Willing and God Bless America this election could set our country on the right cause with the leaders we need for the coming battles. There will be many.

In Feb ’08 I started watching and listening to Hillary. I’m a VET and would be called in foreign policy a NEOCON. I came to the conclusion Hillary could answer the call at 3am. I was not alone in this view. I looked at her and said “shit she has backbone” and is better than Bill!

The MSM and DNC worked to destroy her. I will never forget that. Now they are doing the samething to another woman….Sarah Palin.

Well, the tide is moving in the right way but so much horrible nasty garbage will be thrown at her in the next 50 days…so be it. Can we recapture our colleges from the radicals….probably not. They went far left in the 60′s and are gone as is Hollywood and the MSM. The Clinton 3rd way worked.

    Oh the clock is ticking!

    • Darryl

You touched on the truth here. The wave of corruption swept right through the republican party and is now running throught the Democrats.

  • Tuppence 411

I will be at the Democratic Primary with bells on, bright and early Tuesday morning, voting AGAINST Kerry. The main reason I haven’t changed my party affilation to unenrolled. I want the DNC to see how many registered Democrats voted against Kerry.

To show you how worried they are about Ed, they are even attacking his brother. His brother is FBI. Very respected, attained almost hero status over his work breaking the hold of Organized Crime in Western MA. He now works out of CT, but he is being charged with ethical violations- some 1939 Hatch Act- for endorsing his brother and attending the state convention.

    • Susan

      Tuppence,

In MA you can register unenrolled, and choose which ballot you want on election day – republican or democratic. I have been registered as unenrolled since 2000 and I vote in all the democratic primaries.

        • AMERICAN SAWBUCK

I too am from MA and became an independent in the spring. I will vote for Ed..I received a call from a very nice young woman asking me to vote for Kerry. I said no and told her why. That Hillary won by 12 points here but Kerry did not feel he should support the voices and votes of MA. I therefore could not support him…She agreed with me and said she had been a Hillary supporter too and understood my plight…I do not think she is voting for Kerry either. She had no passion at all for him..God willing he will be defeated and a real populist will win…Ed seems like a good person. Kerry is a fop.

          • Ani

Thank you for your post. Actually, I think Hillary took the MA primary by 15 pts.

Kerry’s actions are all the more ridiculous. But that is nothing new.

Earlier this year, I sent O’Reilly a donation, so I get his newsletter email.
You know, if everyone here sent the man $5.00, the volume of donations could make news for him. It would open some eyes.
    Send Ed $5.00
Anyway, Here’s what I received today from his campaign::

Sunday at 10:30 PM–See the Debate on TV 38 WSBK TV
The one and only debate between Ed O’Reilly and John Kerry can be seen tomorrow night, Sunday at 10:30 pm on TV 38, WSBK-TV.

Please take the time to watch the debate! It is well worth your time!

As you know, John Kerry has refused to have any more debates with Ed. After viewing the debate, you will see why more debates are essential to the Democratic Process and also, why John Kerry has refused to partake in more dialogue. John Kerry’s debating career goes all the way back to his high school days in New Hampshire. This was Ed’s first debate.

John Kerry continues to use millions of dollars on one way advertising and direct mail as this campaign approaches the Primary on September 16th. This is approach is an affront to the voters of Massachusetts.

“The United States Senate seat from Massachusetts can not be bought and this campaign has, from day one, been a referendum on democracy. It is truly shameful that John Kerry has ducked debates” Ed O’Reilly said, yesterday.

Cable TV subscribers, please note that Channel 38 will probably be carried under a different channel number depending upon your cable TV company.

I just read about him this past week and finding out that Kerry has an opponent.

This IS such GREAT news and I wish Ed the BEST OF LUCK.

So, again, it was Kerry looking to save his own ARS when he chose Backtrack Barry to endorse over Hillary Clinton, using his same failed strategy that cost the Presidency in 04.

WIN ED WIN, WIN ED WIN
    Give Massachusetts representation again!

(I haven’t worked on a campaign for a while, it jusst jumped out)

Such a weasel. He even blamed voters of Ohio for his loss.

Kinda’ coincidental, but I was living in Ohio when 04 was upon us (greater Cinci). I know first hand how that election and Ohio went. I stood outdoor in the cold and rain all day for that idiot. I couldn’t even stay up when I got home for final results, I passed out early.

ANYHOO, he couldn’t have conceded any earlier and that was after promising to count every vote. He wouldn’t rise to the challenge when it was clear the machines and votes were skewed. I was making calls to voters from my own home to track actual votes for precincts. Kerry stayed quite.

Then coincidentally I moved out to New Mexico in 06. Kerry made a stop here in 07 pimping his book (late as usual) and someone yelled from the audience and Kerry replied “oh, don’t get me started”. “Let me thank you all for your work for me in 04, too bad I couldn’t have gotten you all to move to Ohio”. I yelled out “OH NO, HE DID NOT JUST GO THERE. My hubby started in and I had to pull him back. LOl

    Kerry is such a weasel.

Not well-known I don’t think is that there is a Republican woman running against Pelosi. Her claim to fame is being a designer. Still, better than Cindy Sheehan. Point is that it’s possible most people think Pelosi’s only competition is Cindy, but there is hope. Very small hope probably, but this is the year of “anything can happen” if you ask me.

I’m in Illinois. I get to send this guy money http://www.sauerbergforussenate.com/stand.aspx

For many years Republicans accused Democrats of being elitists.

I didn’t believe it because, well, they were Republicans.

But the snobishness, meaness, and a down right dismissal of the problems and suffering of everyday Americans by the Democratic leadership and Obama surrogates is chilling.

Gas is over four dollars where I live and is supposed to go over five dollars. A gentleman from Florida says it’s already over five dollars in some places.

If you can find a station where I live that isn’t out of gas, good luck. Gas lines are forming.

Obama’s racial rhetoric is DOA because people of all colors are hurting.

People want solutions and a call for togetherness. Not the politics of “let’s play the victim”.

In my area of the country Obama is tanking badly.
Hope and change doesn’t provide gas to get to and from work. Hillary and McCain proposed, not a solution, but at least temporary relief.

Even FDR didn’t fix the Depression overnight. But he was smart enough to know people needed temporary relief. The kind of thing Obama dismissed.

This is the person and party John Kerry is supporting. Bad move Senator.

  • Jim S

True story: I was out on Nantucket last year and Kerry cut the line at an ice cream parlor. The guy he cuts in front of said to him “excuse me, there’s a line”. Kerry asked “do you know who I am?” and the guy said “yes, and if you don’t get to the back of the line, you’ll know who I am”. Kerry stared at him for about 5 seconds, turned, and walked out of the store.

    Loved it.

    • Ani

I love this, too! Thanks for sharing this here.

John Kerry’s behavior this year makes me ashamed I ever canvassed for that man in 2004. I never cared for Kerry, but of course, wanted to un-elect George Bush. Still, I was blindsided by Kerry’s arrogant, clueless behavior in re Obama.

      • Bellevue_NW_Voter

Me, too, Ani. I spent more hours volunteering for Kerry’s campaign than I had for any others before it. For the first time in my life, I doorbelled as well as did office work, because I wanted Bush out and Kerry seemed (forgive me) “likeable enough” to make that happen with enough support behind him.

      • snosandy

I even stuck up for Kerry overseas. I was living in Malaysia at the time and was in a hotel gift shop. The Muslim woman behind the counter recognized me from my several stays at the hotel and asked if I liked John Kerry. I said yes, and she said “is it true that if John Kerry is elected President, the first thing he will do is bomb Yemen?” That blew me away! I said “no way, absolutely not.” I had no idea the kind of rumors that get started overseas about our elections.

    • fluffy bunny

I read back in 2004 about his doing that all the time. You’d think the coverage would have embarrassed him into changing that behavior at least.

Doesn’t he know more than anyone, he should avoid dairy?

Of the many disappointments during this election cycle, one of the biggest was Kerry’s early endorsement of Obama. In 2004 I had strongly supported his run, only to be devastated not only by the loss itself, but his cowardice in not following through on his “all votes will be counted” promise.

    Good luck, O’Reilly!

There are no new developments in the United States Senate race in Massachusetts – incumbent John Kerry is still the clear frontrunner. This month, the former Presidential candidate leads GOP challenger Jeff Beatty 56% to 29%. When “leaners” are included, Kerry leads 59% to 32%.

I am searching for more polls…still no luck.

Mr. Mike1. Thanks for reminding me about the fact John Kerry’s family took that “Kerry” Irish name to conceal their ethnic identity. I know it’s done all the time, but I think it’s so deceitful to disavow your true heritage for some perceived material gain down the road by assuming a different name. And how much more meaningful for yourself, and your religion or race, if you make strides and achievements in spite of a name you may feel pigeon holes you or holds you back.

I am voting for Ed on Tuesday !!

LOL this thread just shows this is a blog of Republican masquerading as Hil supporters. You have all been outed.

    • Ani

I wonder if you realize what a disrespectful thing that is to say?

Not that there is anything wrong with being a Republican, but your ignorant comment indicates that you think Democrats of good conscience should have no problem voting for Obama. That is ridiculous.

This is the most secretive, disingenuous, dissembling politician I have come across in a long time. He is a complete fiction. His flip flopping and paper thin record, his missed votes and present votes and willingness to throw anyone or any policy under the bus without a moment’s hesitation and his horrid tactics — playing the race card at every turn — these are not examples of strong leadership. I would not trust the country in his hands.

This is the Presidency we are talking about.

I have to request an absentee ballot on Monday so I can vote for O’Reilly. I had hoped to be out doing visibility for O’Reilly on election day, but am housebound recovering from surgery. Hopefully it is not too late to request the ballot! I’ve been too ill to request it before now…

    Go O’Reilly!!

  • Margaret

Senator Kerry is going to win on Tuesday. Mr. O’Reilly is not ready for prime time. He has run on nothing but smearing Kerry had has gone after the voters who have “issues” or sour grapes against Kerry. Fortunately, there aren’t enough of the likes of all of you to be able to undo all the good Senator Kerry has done or to make a dent in his popularity. Senator Kerry is a good honest and hard working politician- always striving to do what is right for this country and the people. He may have money, but that doesn’t mean he can not understand or relate to the needs of the poor and working class. Most of our great leaders have been rich, including Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Jackson, Roosevelt, Kennedy and on and on.
Senator Kerry will return to the senate as a strong leader for Massachuesetts and this country and with God’s help we will have a new progressive presidident- President Obama. And, this country will benefit from the leadership of both men. We will all move forward and the petty voices of mocking and hatred by a few will be drowned out by the voice who speak of change and those who really want to unite this country, raise it above the slim and make her great again.

Ya sure right… I live in MA and my whole family’s voting for O’Reilly…

It’s Obama who’s not ready for prime time, dear.

      O’Reilly 08

  • Lipstick LaPig

    Time for Change!
    Kerry is all ego.

  • Margaret

You family is entitled to vote for whomever they want, but I Senator Kerry is going to win this one. Mass.voters aren’t going to be foolish enough to lose a good senator who has clout, power and experience that can really benefit your state. O’Reilly offers nothing and judging from your name I would say you harbor sour grapes because Senator Kerry chose to support Senator Obama instead of Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is tied to the past our party needs to move forward. The Clinton’s had their time in the sun. They still will share a spot in our party, but their time of control and domanance is over.

Oh please… Obot… sour grapes… that’s so lame… spare me your not so bright point of view on Kerry… you know nothing about the people of MA. I would never vote for Obama or Kerry which is based on solid reasons and not sour grapes… Close the door on your way out, will you… thanks, dear

ps… looks like Mr Obama’s NOT turning red states blue as he said he would. Moreover he’s turning blue states into red…. HAHAHAHA…

Poll in Massachusetts shows McCain gaining on Obama, with the margin down to single digits.

      good nite obot…
