Sleaze

It is time for Barack Obama and his operatives to wipe away all the streaks and smoke stains dulling the surfaces of the anointed one’s many mirrors. I quote an article CNN published yesterday at approximately 3:25pm EST:
Sen. Barack Obama’s spokesman [Bill Burton] on Saturday accused Sen. John McCain of “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”
This comment followed fast on the heels of this pronouncement uttered by an ostensibly indignant Barack Obama at a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday:
“As a consequence, what they’re going to spend the next seven, eight weeks doing is trying to distract you.
“They’re going to talk about pigs, and they’re going to talk about lipstick; they’re going to talk about Paris Hilton, they’re going to talk about Britney Spears. They will try to distort my record, and they will try to undermine your trust in what the Democrats intend to do.”
Complaints about reports of his disparagingly sexist description of Sarah Palin; complaints about factual interpretations of his paltry legislative record; complaints about sensationalism and distractions; unfounded and untenable accusations of unprecedented sleaze: if Obama bothered to wipe away the screen of disavowal sullying his warped hall of mirrors, he would realize he and his campaign are here engaging in cynical and aggressive acts of projection. For it is Obama and not McCain who has been waging “the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential history.”

This list of the sleaze, distractions and distortions deployed by the Obama campaign during the Democratic primary and the general election can be expanded ad infinitum. Perhaps Obama should not stare at a clean mirror, for if he did it would crack under the pressure of his compulsively repeated disavowals and projections. Besides, since when is referring to a sitting US Senator and war hero as a merchant of sleaze and lies so much positive campaigning? Is this not yet another example of Obama’s political sleaze?
I guess we should simply add Obama’s sanctimonious display of feigned outrage in Manchester, New Hampshire, to the list I compile above. Launching a negative campaign against supposed negative campaigning, engaging in what some would call a negative metacampaign, is, after all, unctuous politics par excellence. And Barack “Depends on What Your Definition of Lobbyist Is” Obama is, to be sure, a paragon of unctuousness.
