I am not blaming us for what happened, as we did the best we could against Communism and Saddam was an ally of convenience regarding our national security interests at the time. So were Josef Stalin, Tito, and Mao.

That and we took down Nazi Germany and Japan because they threatened our national security and declared war on us.

But if we are going to engage in interventions for purely humanitarian reasons, my point stands.

If the Balkans, why not Burma or North Korea? I think North Korea takes the cake regarding oppression and consistent human rights abuses.

It was the US government that placed Saddam in power and supplied him during the Iraq/Iran war. He was our buddy during his atrocities until he wasn’t useful anymore. Geopolitics at its best or worse.

Pol pot killed millions. Stalin killed millions. Mao killed millions. Did we prevent all of these deaths? No. So much for world policing. We stopped Germany and Japan many still call FDR a dictator for doing so.

We are but one country allies and all.  To blame us for every atrocity committed anywhere is specious. 

But there’s an old saying: It could be worse.

Think about it. It’ll come to you.

Here’s the deal:  As long as they get a response they hang around for more.  That’s their pavlovian pay off.  Like the hamster who’s learned to press the button for food.  And the analogy doesn’t end there, does it?  Arguing with a troll is like trying to argue with a hamster whose only job is to keep pressing the button.  I don’t think the hamster much cares what your well thought-out response or word choice is — it’s only goal is to get the pay off.  Deprive them of that and there’s no point in trying to press the button anymore, is there?
