The Race Card Hoists the Obama Administration on its Own Petard

/ Bumped up /

Leave it to Maureen Dowd to miss the forest for the trees in her argument that

“The Obama White House is too white.”

In Dowd’s latest NYT column, You’ll Never Believe What This White House Is Missing, she discusses the Shirley Sherrod incident, and writes that “unlike Bill Clinton, who never needed help fathoming Southern black culture,” the Obama white house just doesn’t get the “central African-American experience.”

Dowd contends the Obama administration had better shape up otherwise…

“…[T]his administration will keep tripping over race rather than inspiring on race.”

and

“We may not have a “nation of cowards” on race, as Attorney General Eric Holder contended, but we may have a West Wing of cowards on race.”

They are cowards. Period. Yet they use the Rovian tactic of blaming others for sins of which they themselves are guilty.

While Dowd understands that Barack Obama’s exotic background and upbringing in Hawaii may be a contributing factor to his seeming lack of understanding, she cannot admit that White House insensitivity on racial issues is due to much more than his being surrounded by “smart-ass white boys” as she puts it. The real problem stems from something far worse. His administration’s actions are governed by branding, political expediency and preserving Obama’s popularity.

When polling rather than conscience drives your actions, the Shirley Sherrod firing fiasco is the result.

Dowd then resorts to the typical “let’s attack FOX News for the hell of it” gambit:

“The West Wing white guys who pushed to ditch Shirley Sherrod before Glenn Beck could pounce…”

Dowd does not clarify what Glenn Beck “pouncing” actually meant – Glenn Beck pounced on the White House, not Sherrod. Beck felt they had unjustly fired her. But Dowd could not possibly admit that Beck took Sherrod’s side. Sherrod could not either from the looks of it and wanted to continue to paint FOX News as the bad guy when the network held off on covering the story until they got all the facts – unlike President Obama. Sherrod was forced to resign before FOX did any “pouncing.”

And what of the NAACP? They were the ones with the entire tape – why didn’t they speak on her behalf, if indeed they had the basis to do so?

Perhaps Andrew Breitbart was wrong to show the edited tape of Sherrod’s remarks. It is up to you to decide whether you believe he did so less to slam Sherrod and more to slam the audience at the NAACP dinner who reacted appreciatively to what he felt were reverse racist sentiments on her part.

Dowd also complains…

“At some level, [Obama] acts like the election was enough; he shouldn’t have to deal with race further. But he does.”

…“Who knew that the first black president would make it even harder on black people?” asked a top black Democratic official.

Um. I did. So did a lot of other folks on this blog.

In May of 2008, Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson penned a piece entitled The Card Clinton Is Playing – accusing Hillary Clinton of playing the race card to advance her candidacy while ignoring the fact that the Obama campaign had been playing that card daily and with impunity. I responded to Mr. Robinson’s accusations. In pertinent part, I wrote:

…The few like Tavis Smiley, who criticized Sen. Obama for skipping the State of the Black Union, and I believe [Senator Obama] also decided not to speak at MLK’s anniversary event, raise an interesting point. Senator Obama is, perhaps of necessity, courting the white vote and taking for granted the African American community who vote for him in droves. I believe, if he were to be elected, aside from the great symbolic value of having him in office, which I grant you is no small thing, the AA community may suffer because the white liberal elite in the party pushing to elect him will feel they’ve put a band aid over the racial divide in this country, while in actuality doing little to heal it.

Apparently Dowd agrees, complaining that Obama is “light years” behind Bush on developmental help to Africa and wouldn’t let Muslim women in head scarves appear behing him at a rally because Obama staffers were afraid he would be painted “as a radical/Muslim/socialist.” She accuses his staffers of insensitivity — as if Obama were somehow not involved in these decisions. Isn’t he the President?

Ms. Dowd – it is not “insensitivity.” It is Obama’s ‘you are a notch on my bedpost, I use you for my own purposes and otherwise you can get lost attitude.’ This White House is run by a bunch of arrogant frat boys. What do you expect?

Dowd also reported:

“I don’t think a single black person was consulted before Shirley Sherrod was fired — I mean c’mon, “ said Congressman James Clyburn of South Carolina. [snip]

“The president’s getting hurt real bad,” Clyburn told me. “He needs some black people around him.” He said Obama’s inner circle keeps “screwing up” on race.

A laughable comment to be sure. I don’t know whether President Obama needs “some black people around him” as much as he needs to grow some genuine leadership ability and the willingness to do his homework before making a judgment on an issue of which he knows nothing.

A disproportionately high number in the black community have been adversely affected by high unemployment, something NYT columnist Bob Herbert has pointed out many times. He too, is wondering why the President is “screwing up on race.”

Perhaps Rep. Clyburn and others are now regretting having played the race card on the Clintons during the primaries, who have done more for the African American community than Obama ever has.

President Obama had never in his career exhibited compassion or understanding of these issues, certainly not to the point of taking action on them. How did Dowd, Herbert, Robinson, Clyburn or anyone else assume he would be magically transformed once elected?

President Obama’s administration only uses the race card as a defensive tool and a shield against criticism of his inane policies and actions. That has officially backfired. It backfired in Massachusetts with his “the Cambridge police acted stupidly” remark, as it has once again with Shirley Sherrod.

More is required than different advisors.

The White House has a horrible habit of working reactively, resorting to a “don’t blame me — it’s the other guys fault” mantra. That is not genuine leadership, which, of course, has been the problem all along. Every time one of these incidents gets played out before the American people, it is further evidence that those in charge have not done their homework and cannot grow beyond making pathetic excuses for the same. Slowly but surely, the country is getting a glimpse into the real character of this administration.

Here comes another story to hoist Obama some more.

White House backed release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi

The US has tried to keep the letter secret, refusing to give permission to the Scottish authorities to publish it on the grounds it would prevent future “frank and open communications” with other governments.
In the letter, sent on August 12 last year to Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and justice officials, Mr LeBaron wrote that the US wanted Megrahi to remain imprisoned in view of the nature of the crime.
The note added: “Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose.”

The document, acquired by a well-placed US source, threatens to undermine US President Barack Obama’s claim last week that all Americans were “surprised, disappointed and angry” to learn of Megrahi’s release.”

Ani, great post!  This whole Sherrod situation somehow reminds me of the Dr. Seuss story about the Sneetches–the one in which everyone wanted a “star upon thars” until everyone had a “star upon thars.”  So then it was cool not to have a star….and around and around they go.

Is MoDo turning senile or something?  Or has she become a fiction writer?  I just seems to me that she never really bothered to check the timeline of events or look into the tape, excerpted or full-length, or watch video of Glen Beck–no research whatsoever.  She just wants to have a star upon hers so she can fit in with the Bros who say Obambi has too many white guys around him.

I do agree that he has some extremely idiotic white guys around him, that’s for sure.  But having more from from the NCAAP around him might, at this point, be just hurtful for his administration.

You’re absolutely right.  The problem is that the DNC foisted brand Obama onto the country.  You open a can of the Obama brand (can’t buy Pepsi because its logo looks too much like O’s), and nothing’s inside.

  • Patience

Good article Ani except I don’t agree that this administration only uses the race card defensively.  I believe it uses it offensively as well, mainly through surrogates in the media, people like Howard Dean, etc.  Since the Democrats’ prospects for the mid-terms look bleak, I suspect it’ll be played more and more as we approach November in order to rouse voters to show up at the polls.  It’s a desperate tactic that helped them in 2008.  Will it work this year?

As for Ms. Dowd, her pattern of blaming everyone but the POTUS continues.  It seems she’s afraid, very afraid, of being branded a racist.

  • Ani

Very good point, Patience.  But as they say the best defense is a good offense…so maybe we are in agreement after all!  :)

I was very disappointed in Sherrod.  She became a race baiting shill for Obama.  She doesn’t realize that the tactic won’t work now.  We have  been accused of racism ever since Obama started running because we questioned his tactics.  Sherrod was the victim of vicious racism and should not be playing the faux race card.  Why is she so invisible in all this?

  • oowawa

Ahem.  Well, the expression “hoisted on his own petard” inspired me to do some scholarly research.  And so I turned to my usual mentor, Wikipedia, and found that “The word petard comes from the Middle French peter, to break wind, from pet expulsion of intestinal gas, from Latin peditum, from neuter of peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind; akin to Greek bdein to break wind. (Merriam-Webster) Petard remains a French word meaning a firecracker today (in French slang, it means a handgun, or a joint).”

“And so, In medieval and Renaissance siege warfare, a common tactic was to dig a shallow trench close to the enemy gate, and then erect a small hoisting engine that would lift the lit petard out of the trench, swing it up, out, and over to the gate, where it would detonate and hopefully breach the gate. This procedure might go awry; the engineer lighting the bomb could be snagged in the ropes, lifted out with the petard, and consequently blown up”

Well, it seems like Monty Python should have filmed just such a sequence, but I could not locate it.  However, since “petard” derives from “peter,” to fart, (see the interesting discussion of the performer Le Petomane), I was able to find another video that serves to illustrate, metaphorically, being “hoisted on your own petard.”  This also illustrates what might befall a politician who falls into “liar liar pants on fire” prevarication.  (Please note that these are stupid white guys, so nothing racist is implied.)

Fox News or no Fox News. When did Fox News become the arbiter of who gets fired by the federal government?

They can’t have it both ways. The racists at Fox caused the firing but the federal government listened to said racists?

Fox did not fire this woman. Glenn Beck, love him or hate him, did not fire this woman. Of course unless the federal government is really working for the owner of Fox News.

If that’s true then nobody is in charge except Fox News.

I think  it is  a way to divert the attention from the fact that multiple LSM journalists actively engaged in selecting the current President.

Americans, at least most of the people that vote, don’t forgive or forget. I think they are hoping we’ll forget between now and November.

According to Sherrod ihe order to fire her came from the WH. Sh*t rolls down hill.

As I posted before, Breitbart effectively took the race card out of the bag of DNC dirty tricks and tore it into a thousand pieces.  No it wasn’t a pretty or clean job, but the message got through.  Rasmussen Reports: steady decline in Pres. Tracking Poll.  RCP upside down in aggregate poll three days in a row.  I keep thinking that the angels with dirty faces showed up to push the country off of the race dialogue and not a moment too soon!

Obama called Sherrod for damage control.  Not only did the WH get hoisted it may just remain there to rot.

So let me get this straight. Until Obama appoints more black people our government will cease to function effectively?

Kinda like the plantation owners said. If we don’t keep those blacks under our control and make sure they are where we want them (federal government/plantation) and teach them how to behave nothing will get done.  All of the abolishionists must be spinning  in their graves.

So Dowd et al. are basically saying that because Obama did not have a “black experience” growing up (she says he grew up in the “Hawaiian hood”??? I heard his grandma was a bank executive…), that he needs more black advisors.

It seems to me it’s just more attempts to make everything about race.  All kinds of people have been saying for so long that he doesn’t understand their experience.  People say he doesn’t understand what it’s like for women; that he doesn’t identify with America; that he doesn’t have any urgency about the oil spill and how it affects the animals, the environment, and the people’s lives in the south; and that he doesn’t understand the black experience.

But again, it’s all about race.

IMO, all these things are true.  I don’t think he is capable of understanding other people’s lives or experiences; I think all he is able to see is how things affect himself, and any historic speeches (TM) to the contrary are just contrived, manipulative PR he is reading off a teleprompter.  I think it all goes back to his narcissism.

I think the “winners” will be the voices that pull all these different kinds of detachment-from-the-public together.  The conversation needs to be about his deficiencies.  If they are able to once again make it all about race, it will get turned back around on the public again, instead of being about him.  IMO, he is not a public servant, and he is not an empathic person.

Yes, it seems like another life.  And, in a way, it was.

Someone posted (I think on NQ, but I’m not positive) a comic with a guy at a bar saying something like “I don’t consider myself nervous, I consider myself well-informed”.  I suppose it could be interpreted different ways, but it made me think of my own journey.

I used to only listen to left wing stuff, thinking it was just the objective truth, and I knew I was on the right side.  And, looking back, I realize I had definite opinions about things – but basically it was what I was told – because I wasn’t looking at both sides of issues.

Now I listen to both sides, and I don’t always know “the answer” right away.  I have to think more about things, and even then, sometimes I might stay in the grey.  I’m more skeptical now, and aware of how all journalism seems to have an agenda these days.

I think back to how much “easier” it was to parrot one side and feel like I understood everything.  It’s harder now to always know what is “right”.  But I’ll take the “nervous and well-informed” over the old “certain and informed-only-by-one-side” any day!

Didn’t stop Sherrod and Howard Dean and a host of others for blaming Beck anyway. Truth doesn’t matter, talking points and perception does.

But as Chris Wallace asked Howard Dean yesterday, if Oblahblah’s Administration is that frightened of Glenn Beck, whatever will they do about Iran? Seems a good question to me.

And every time they re-act to Beck in this hysterical way they empower him. If they’re so smart, why don’t they know that?

Obama hits road to restore ratings

    By Edward Luce in Washington
    July 25 2010
    TheFinancialTime.com

Barack Obama, US president, takes to the road this week on his “summer of recovery” drive amid concern that the White House has lost the political narrative over its handling of the economy, in spite of having taken strong steps to bring it back from the brink.

Mr Obama’s forays this week will include visits to Michigan plants of GM and Chrysler, both of which were kept alive by last year’s federal bail-out and are now adding jobs, and a trip to New Jersey to highlight the effects of last year’s $787bn stimulus.

Mr Obama’s trips follow an increasingly grim pattern of poll findings, which show deep-rooted scepticism among the US public about the effects of the stimulus and his approach to the economy in general.

According to a Pew Research poll last week, only 35 per cent of Democratic voters believe the stimulus “helped keep unemployment from getting worse”.

In spite of the ubiquitous billboards proclaiming infrastructure work funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, only 45 per cent of Democrats believe it has improved roads and bridges in their area.

More ominously for the White House, a majority of Americans believe the administration’s priorities have been skewed towards companies and the wealthy.

Fifty-three per cent said Washington’s economic policies have helped large banks “a great deal” and 31 per cent felt the wealthy had benefited similarly. This compares with only 7 per cent believing Mr Obama had helped the poor and 2 per cent that he had helped the middle classes “a great deal”.

Given that the large majority of Democrats agree with these statements, Mr Obama faces an even steeper hill than many had supposed in the build up to the mid-term elections in November.

    Obama Administration Intimidated
by Right on Race, Critics Say

    Original Article

    7/26/2010

The fallout from the Shirley Sherrod affair continued Sunday with a leading black commentator saying the Obama administration “has been intimidated by the far right wing,” and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich blaming the Obama administration’s “incompetence” in rushing to judgment on her for his initial description of her as a racist.

  • elizabethrc

Sometimes it’s just gratifying to sit back and watch the parade of events.
For a good laugh I read the NYT on line.  About the wrong-est peeps on the planet.  They blame Fox for having a slant?  Pot meet kettle.
Self-implode?  Coming soon to a theatre near you.
So far, the only thing I’ve heard or read about the Lockerbie outrage has come from Fox, the conservative media and Drudge.  I guess the MSM don’t think it’s something Americans would be upset about.

  • Sassy

In reading the links on another thread, the Scots pointed out that it would cost huge sums of money to provide security for Megrahi at the home in Scotland that is used by his family. I don’t think that would sit well with their citizens, especially now that this monster has escaped death.

  • Sassy

I did not like Dean at first sight and was mystified by his online extravaganza of fundraising.
I did not see any version of the tape released by Breitbart that did not contain Sherrod’s comments about the issue being poor blacks and poor whites.
Perhaps she was exposed unfairly by name, but if Vilsack is responsible for the conduct of his agency, that should also apply to his employees.
There has not been one shred of evidence to substantiate the spitting and n-word charges leveled at protestors in D.C. and yet thousands there were smeared, along with about a million of Tea Party members.

  • sowsear

I have noticed that when she is photographed, she is almost always shown with black persons. The main exceptions to that were when she hosted White House staff “Take your children to work Day” and then with an occasional white city or Gulf official.

All this Sherrod nonsense — and it is nonsense — just makes me want to stick a fork in my eye.  The story that dropped out of sight in and amongst all this was the NBPP story, barry’s ties to that org and his involvement with the decision at the DOJ.  They were just starting to unravel the WH’s involvement in who called off the dogs of justice against the Panther’s guys in PA.  Now that story’s just dropped off the edge of the earth — like so many others that were important to getting to the bottom of barry’s relations.  And which bill got signed into law last week?

Valerie Jerret and Anita Dunn must be having that second, leisurely cup of coffee over the headlines right about now.  They have succeeded in controlling the message.

    Obama: send Biden to Beck

    Washington Post,
    by Jonathan Capehart

    Original Article

    7/26/2010

The White House must break the near-crippling cycle of fear it seems to be caught in with FOX News. Sure, some Obama administration officials have slammed it as not really being a news organization that shouldn’t be taken seriously as such. But the folks running the Free World from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue quake at the mere hint that someone from the “We report, you decide” crowd on Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue is going to shank them. So here’s what they need to do to try to liberate themselves: send Vice President Biden to Glenn Beck….

  • tango

I heard today from Glen Becks mouth on his radio show, that Ms. Sherrod wasn’t ever booked to do Glen’s show.  The day after she resigned she was supposed to be on Megyn Kelly’s show but cancelled her appearance. Later that afternoon is the first time Glen even spoke about her and then he supported her.

  • tango

Do you think Obama will visit with Gov. Christie when he’s in NJ touting the sucessof the stimulus?  Nah, I don’t think so.  Obama would pee his pants being in the same space as someone actually qualified.

  • tango

Oh and here’s some more information about Ms. Sherrods husband.  Sure seems like he’s a racist too.  And something about the couple is troubling in regards to the money they won in the lawsuit, missing money, etc.

    The Unpresidential President

    Weekly Standard,
    by James W. Ceaser

    Original Article

    7/26/2010

From charisma to populism—this is the slippery slope down which Barack Obama has been sliding over the past two years. In June 2008, Obama the candidate described his nomination as “the moment when .  .  . our planet began to heal.” In June 2010, Obama the president promised his partisans he would find an “ass to kick.” With the peculiar magic of his presidential campaign now a faded memory, Obama is shoring up support by the cruder method of divisive appeals. Long before the current (already hugely extended) campaign season began, Obama made it a practice to target opposition symbols….

Shut up and eat shit Maureen Dowd. There is an article in this month’s Vanity Fair written by Maureen Dowd about her trip to Saudi Arabia. You would think she was trying to do her own version of Sex and City 2 rather than reporting on the horrific conditions women face in that country.

She brought along her own photographer. To photograph the archeological treasures of Saudi Arabia? No. To have herself photographed in alluring poses dressed in an abiya and a head scarf.

And she manages to get in a dig at Hillary Clinton too.

Yes, Obama has a shit load of karma to pay, and it’s been accumulating interest faster than a maxed out credit card.

There is a simple reason for Obama’s predicament: he never accomplished anything on his own. He was a firm believer in the typical fraud’s axiom “Get a reputation for getting up early, and you can sleep late the rest of your life.”

    Sherrod Story False

Shirley Sherrod’s story in her now famous speech about the lynching of a relative is not true. The veracity and credibility of the onetime Agriculture Department bureaucrat at the center of the explosive controversy between the NAACP and conservative media activist Andrew Breitbart is now directly under challenge. By nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court. All of them dead. But first, it’s important to say this. After Shirley Sherrod’s firing I wrote a column congratulating Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for removing her — based on a viewing of the now infamous edited Breitbart clip. I was wrong….

What has NO Quarter being saying along. How stupid are black Americans… How could you vote for this bastard, who on the face it all is not black… Obama is HALF back genetically and was fully raised WHITE with a Muslim heritage. Obama only came to claim his Americaness when he moved to Hawii from Asia. Then Obama decided to claim African Muslim name so he could get into Harvard under the legacy slot of his African dad, thus removing his Asian connection. Obama only become remotely interested in being identified as black or African American by marrying Michelle. Thus, Obama transformation to a black person came during the 2008 campaign. Thus, we now have a so called black president with ZERO black American exprience. Why does the stupid media keep calling Obama black? Beats me.

Yes, I think her statement when she said she was supposed to pull over and resign then and there because she would be on Glenn Beck was her way of saying that they wanted to foil Beck, thinking that he was working in tandem with Breitbart on the story.  They wanted Beck’s show, which they assumed would be about the racists in the NAACP to be undercut by their news of making her resign.  She was never going to be on Beck’s show–they just thought she would be.  I think it’s hilarious how Beck has them all “shook up.”  Maybe he’s Elvis in disguise.

They are going to Spain because they think it’s part of Mexico and they want to show Solidarity Forever!

Geography is not in the Obamas’ skill set. Remember how Michelle showed up on the beach during her “helping with the oil spill recovery” tour? She called the Gulf of Mexico a “national treasure.”

Yes, that’s right. The Gulf of Mexico is our national treasure and it belongs to us. And because Mexico is close to the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico belongs to us too. Got that straight?

Michelle is full of surprises. I didn’t think she knew her history, but she sure as hell does. She’s a big fan of TR’s “speak softly and carry a big stick” philosophy. She’s going to annex Cuba any time now.

The Atlantic Ocean (that big blue space on the map between Washington DC. and Europe) touches Spain. So Spain also belongs to us, according to Michelle’s cockamamie rules. I guess it’s acquisition by contamination.

Unidad en la huelga, no nos moveran!

Sing out, sister! Too bad the internets scrubbed the photos of Michelle during her revolutionary period when she wore a schmata on her head and looked menacing at the camera. Those were the days before she discovered the joys of living on the Gravy Train to Cadgeville.

One more nail in the clueless Democrat coffin.  I love that the Buycott is a success…AZ up in hotels, retail, etc.  If you need to order anything over the net, see if you can find an AZ source first.

Onward to the Supreme Court, please.  They will uphold it.

The illegals and LaRaza are going to overplay their hand.  If they go to AZ with massive demonstrations (the farmworkers from our county are supposedly going there with No ID) tomorrow, to bring law enforcement to a halt, they are going to be in for a surprize.  The backlash will be so loud in November they will be tripping over each other to get back to Me-He-Co.

    FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

…Federal authorities have argued that letting the Arizona law stand would create a patchwork of immigration laws nationwide that would needlessly complicate foreign relations. They said the law is disrupting U.S. relations with Mexico and other countries.

About 100 protesters in Mexico City who had gathered in front of the U.S. Embassy broke into cheers when they learned of Bolton’s ruling. They had been monitoring the news on a laptop computer.
“Migrants, hang on, the people are rising up!” they chanted.
Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinoza called the ruling “a first step in the right direction” and said staff at the five Mexican consulates in Arizona will work extra hours in coming weeks to educate migrants about the law.
“None of this is very surprising,” said Kevin R. Johnson, an immigration expert and the law school dean at University of California at Davis. “This is all very much within the constitutional mainstream.”
The federal government has exclusive powers over immigration to ensure a uniform national policy that aids in commerce and relations with other countries, Johnson said….”

What I heard tonight is they are not required to ask their status…but they can do so anyway.  And I also heard that they can get rid of the loittering laborers if they are a nuisance or blocking commerce.  They are going to find ways around a lot of this.
