Play the Salary Game!

Obama has a new attack ad. He says McCain doesn’t support paying women as much as men for equal work.

Remember this article from the Seattle Post Intelligencer? The one about how Obama pays women less than McCain?

Read the rest ->

Obama’s commitment to federally mandated pay equity stretches from the Rockies to Wall Street and beyond. And yet it seems to have eluded his Senate office. Compensation figures for his legislative staff reveal that Obama pays women just 83 cents for every dollar his men make.

A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. “We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible,” its website explains. Parsing LegiStorm’s official data, gleaned from the Secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body.

The most recent statistics are for the half-year from Oct. 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last Feb. 29, extrapolating up to six months’ service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year’s worth of Senate employees’ paychecks should look.

Based on these calculations, Obama’s 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama’s average male employee earned $54,397.

Obama’s 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average.

Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Obama’s highest-compensated ranks. Among Obama’s five best-paid advisors, only one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women.

Again, on average, Obama’s female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama’s campaign website condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama’s rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain on this issue.

Obama responded Aug. 31 to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s Republican vice-presidential nomination. Palin “seems like a very engaging person,” Obama told voters in Toledo, Ohio. “But I’ve got to say, she’s opposed — like John McCain is — to equal pay for equal work. That doesn’t make much sense to me.”

————
On average, according to these data, women in John McCain’s office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart — while adding $10,726 to her annual income — by leaving Barack Obama’s office and going to work for John McCain.

How could this be?

One explanation could be that women compose a majority of McCain’s highest-paid aides. Among his top-five best-compensated staffers, three are women. Of his 20-highest-salaried employees, 13 are women. The Republican presidential nominee relies on women — much more than men — for advice at the highest, and thus, best-paid levels.

Purplepeoplevote covered this some time ago, as did HotAir.

Here’s the originating website, Legistorm, that details Congressional staffer pay and names.

Obama staff
McCain staff

Here’s a task for you. I’ve put the most recent names and salaries of both candidates’ staff below. I used the publicly available data and did not alter it other than to organize by gender.

Notes on this file:

  • I did the best I could to separate out men and women staffers – but you know how names can be mistaken.
  • In this file, I noted in bold those staffers making above $30,000. I could have used any number, but I arbitrarily chose $30,000.
  • I averaged salaries for all men and all women for both candidates.
  • I also averaged salaries for those above $30,000.
  • Please note pay seems to be for the start and end dates indicated. Nice work if you can get it!!
  • Also note, these are Congressional staffers, not campaign staff.

This is not meant to be comprehensive, but a “quick and dirty” look. I’m counting on NQ posters to provide more nuance! Are you ready players! Let’s play!!!

Where does Obama get his info from?

      Why does he thinks this?

    • Paul3triple

it is also absurd because frankly it is not the governments job to tell company’s what to pay.
And also, the comment of education and training is out of context.
Plus, as noted McCain pays his women staffers more than men.
Also, that 77 cents is an average of all wages from all jobs. The equal pay line is a democratic rallying theme to trick women.

This is very stupid on Obama’s side. Mcain can just counter that what’s in theis article proving Hypocracy

    • http://www.progressive.org/mag_reed0508 Beowulf

Obama has definitely opened himself up for a giant counter-attack on this issue. McCain can effectively nitpick this one to death, nullifying what would normally be a policy advantage. Yet another issue turns into an another “ugly frog”.

it is also absurd because frankly it is not the governments job to tell company’s what to pay.

During the primaries, Obama made government regulation of CEO compensation of publicly traded companies a component of his platform.

    • JML

This could be a devastating ad if McCain does not counter-attack ASAP.

I guess I have to be honest and ask why, if McCain actually walks the walk re fair pay of his own staffers, why in fact DID he oppose a Fair Pay Act?

      Can anyone answer this question?

He is a liar and his campiagn lies. The media won’t call him on it, so it doesn’t matter. We are all being fucked with by the media. The media had become nothing more than a propaganda mob for their own special interests.

    • tminu

He believes, I think, that federal involvement in trying to find equal labor attributes to entirely different jobs, not jobs with the same title or within the same organization, is fraught with impossibilities. For example, equating a donut fryer with a taxi cab driver, based on education, labor stress, might make sense on paper, but one job might be more in demand than the other with fluctuations…it’s kind of ridiculous.

There are laws currently that state that the same job title within the same organization cannot have gender discrepant pay.

    • cocky whacko

This is idiotic and changes the subject. You have no idea who was available and who each choose to hire. In any case, what does this have to do with the Lilly Ledbetter Act? Why won’t McCain stand up to corporations for fair pay? Obama sticks to the issues and Mccain’s side makes personal attacks. I guess that is why Obama is pulling ahead in the polls.

    • beverly leslie

From my understanding he didn’t actually vote on the bill. He was not in the Senate the day of the vote.

I see that the Obama campign is making is big play for the vote of those “bitter aging Hillary supporters.” I know all I need to know about how Obama paid his female staff less, how he gave Hillary the finger, literally brushed her off, called professional newswomen sweeties and had “99 problems but the bitch aint one of them” at a rally to EVER vote for Obama.

      P.S. I didn’t support Hillary, nor am I a “low information” voter.

Are these garbage adds being played in swing states? Or just on youtube to be picked up by MSM trolls?

Bambam is scary. This guy is a lying sack o’ crap that is trying to divide and conquer–scare women by some lies about equal pay for equal work. I can tell you, this ad was crafted to respond to former Hillary supporters by trying to say that mccain is anti-woman.

      Ummm…not working, Obama!

    • Kal

These are important points. Canadian legislation re equal pay for work of equal value certainly created a lot of administrative and compliance complexities. However, it accomplished some good before being yanked by conservatives who took over.

The key point, however, is that BO himself does not practice equality, and that McC does. That is the point that ought to be hammered home in ads.

    • jennie

BTW, shitbama tried to do the same thing to hispanics with Limbaugh comments taken out of context.
      Rush responds in the wsj:

      http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122178554189155003.html

same old story. Obama thinks women and hispanics are too stupid to use google and catch him in his lies. The “great uniter” my ass. Thank god for this website.

Is this the Lilly Ledbetter legislation? Perhaps I’m missing something but I thought that McCain was listed as “Not Voting” on the legislation (the question to invoke cloture to end debate and hold a vote–the cloture did not carry). Here is what I found: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR02831:@@@X
Can others fill me in if this is incorrect?

Tell me one thing besides being corrupt that he’s been consistent on?

How about the troll pay scale? Obama’s gotta have some good numbers there. Let’s compare male and female troll wages:

      Obama:
      Male trolls: (number males)(hourly wage) = y
      Female trolls: (number females)(hourly wage) = x
      Total payroll = x+y
      etc.

      McCain:
      Male trolls: (0)x (hourly wage) = 0
      Female trolls: (0) x (hourly wage) = 0
      Total payroll = $0.00
      etc.

If Obama has even one paid female troll, he beats McCain! Because McCain has zero trolls.

Makes more sense on an Excel spreadsheet, but you get the idea. Eat sh!t and die, PUMAs. Obama beats McCain’s numbers if you take troll payroll into account.

Make sense to you? Bet an obot will pick this “logic” up and run with it.

      Excellent point.

Please hit back at Obama and all of his supporter’s on this age discrimination. Talk about insulting your community organizers and then Obama is insulting older people.

My mother lost her job due to age and feels that she is discriminated against about age during interviews. This hurts her when she sees it happening at the highest level of office.

She is so tired of hearing in the news that Obama is being discriminated against due to his race while Obama gets away with discriminating against McCain’s age by saying he’s too old and about to die and why should we elect him for the job of the Presidency? Do you know how this is affecting older citizens?

Last time I checked you can’t discriminated against race, sex or age etc….
Obama is discriminating against McCain and I hope that every older person gets out there and votes against Obama and his age discrimination.

    • jennie

Is your Head in the effing sand?

Obama tried to link limbaugh and mccain in his ad “dos caras”. Which was a total lie.

He said that mccain did not use a computer and was out of touch in another add. Blatent ageism. Mccain can’t type for long period of time due to his injuries.

“Stick to the issues”…Obama has no issues, no agenda, no track record to comment on. This guy is an empty suit.

Yes, the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is what people generally mean when they say McCain is “against equal pay for women”.

The Act has little to do with “fair pay for women”, it mostly clarifies the statute of limitations for backpay based on “discrimination”.

It is sort of like saying “Dont ask, dont tell” is pro-gay. It guess it is if you dont actually use your brain for thinking purposes.

Actually paying women as much as men for the same job does more than Ledbetter ever will.

    • fif

I also read that there was a technical reason McCain did not support the equal pay bill. Anyone have info on that?

    • jennie

This is off topic but awesome…

Biden loses the official catholic vote.

      http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/gerald_warner/blog/2008/09/19/joe_biden_loses_barack_obama_the_catholic_vote

Archbishop Chaput of Denver had already announced Biden should not receive communion because of his pro-abortion views. Defiantly, Biden took communion in his home parish in Delaware in late August. On September 2 the Bishop of Scranton, Pennsylvania (a crucial swing state) banned him from communion in his diocese. That is effective excommunication. Then came the crucial provocation. On NBC’s Meet the Press programme on September 7 Biden grossly misrepresented the Catholic Church’s teaching on abortion and audaciously cited St Thomas Aquinas in his own cause.

Guys I hope you don’t think I am a “concern troll,” but I am extremely worried with the recent econ crisis and the polls coming out today. McCain has to win at least MI or PA. I don’t know I just feel Repubs need to fire their missiles NOW. The idea of arrogant Obama as President frightens me so much. I can’t imagine the coverage of him if he wins – it will be four or eight years of hell. He has to be stopped now BEFORE he gets into power cause if he is such a thug now he will turn the American governmnt into a mafia state.

    • Americafirst

This shows start and end pay period for all. However, it does not show how long any of these people worked for the campaigns. Does that play a part in their salaries – raises etc. What about seniority? Perhaps Obama is underpaying, but the table does not address these issues. And the equal pay bill is a separate issue

Also the Ledbetter v. Goodyear court case that sparked this bill is very important! A woman who is told that if she discusses salary will be fired is supposed to recognize that she is being paid at a rate lower than her male counterpart within 90 days of the ORIGINAL raise or her claim is no longer valid. That goes against all prior court rulings, because the SCOTUS is backing the corporate interests. An individual used to be able to make a claim after every paycheck, because each check was a new act of discrimination.

    • cocky whacko

No one explained why McCain is against the Lilly Ledbetter Act. That was the point of his ad. Do you agree with McCain on this issue.

    • cocky whacko

How is that the major point? I am more interested in the law than in the hiring practices of one person.

    • Donna Brazile hating on coocoo wacko

      Hey Coo coo,

Please ask BO why you don’t make as much money as your more attractive counterparts! He’s discriminating against you — or are you to wacko to notice it?

      Stop the hate, coo coo!

    • HC

In rejecting Ledbetter’s appeal in Ledbetter v Goodyear, the Supreme Court said that “she could have, and should have, sued” when the pay decisions were made, instead of waiting beyond the 180-day statutory charging period.

Not 90 days. Not forever. 6 months.

      Here is the decision:

      http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/search/display.html?terms=ledbetter&url=/supct/html/05-1074.ZS.html

The “Ledbetter Fair Pay Act” being batted around by congress seeks to increase the 6 months.

Here is the Act as it stood prior to rejection:

      http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:h.r.02831:

It doesn’t say a thing about paying women less.

The only “low information” voters are the ones who vote for Obama. The voters who go and find out about the issues (rather than being spoon-fed toxic nonsense) are the ones who will vote for anybody other than Obama.

If I remember correctly, there was a provision which allowed retroactive lawsuits.

    • Tuppence 411

Well I watched the news and read the newspapers at the time; it was because it opened the door to retroactive lawsuits.

    • PamFlorida

The first line of the ad got to me:
“Today many women work to help support their families.”
Today MOST women have to work because one salary is not enough to support a family. It’s not a choice anymore.
Single women with children constitute over 75% of the poorest families in the country.

    • cocky whacko

Without clarifying the statute of limitations, the act has no teeth. This allows companies to get away with paying men more for the same job. McCain has a chance to choose fair pay over corporate interests and he chose corporate interests. How is the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act similar to “Don’t Ask, don’t tell?”

    • cocky whacko

She didn’t know about being paid less until after the 180 days of the first act of discrimination. As I understand it, the Court’s interpretation was not what Congress intended. In any case, the way the Court interpreted the statute makes it impossible to sue for discrimination. Employers have very little to fear and I more likely to discriminate the way the Court interpreted the law. What is the point of having a statute barring discrimination if there are no consequences for violating the law.

    • NoBamaNoWay

truth is, democrats are nothing but talk. it’s like bill clinton said, it’s all about delivering, and obama not going to deliver squat, except to Chicagify the rest of the country. no thanks.

    • bemused

Sometimes these acts to provide “fair play” are too full of philosophical problems. What is fair? What is equal? There can be too many variables to consider: we have men vs. women, but we also have level of training and job content to compare. For instance, “Staff Assistant” is a popular title, but are all these staff assistants equal in workload and responsibility? Who gets to snoop in the workplace to make sure things are equal? What’s to prevent someone gaming the system by giving some favored person a nicer title so their higher salary is justified? It’s a terrible can of worms.
