“Oh, Andy. How Could You?”

I don’t know about you, but I grew up watching “The Andy Griffith Show.” Griffith was a fellow Tar Heel, after all. His show imparted words of wisdom on a regular basis. My 7- and 10-year-old nieces still watch his show on TV Land (along with the “Lucille Ball Show”).

Yes, the show routinely poked gentle fun at small-town America, allowing us to laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously. And who could forget what a great parent Sheriff Taylor was, often disciplining young Opie for mistakes made by sending him to his room so he could “think about that thar thing.” Oh, yes. A great show, especially for someone growing up in the South.

Heck, we joke even now that we live in Mayberry since we are on an island with not even ONE stoplight. I kid you not. The UPS man’s sister-in-law was my physical therapist, and the postal carrier who retired to rescue animals, would tell me about her vacations. People talk to one another here. Just like Mayberry.

So, imagine my disappointment when I saw the following ad put out by the Obama White House:

As Aunt Bea would say, “Oh, Andy, how could you?”

She’s not the only one. FactCheck.Org also has a problem with it, as this article by Brooks Jackson indicates, “Mayberry Misleads On Medicare.” It’s a sad day for Mayberry, and the country, when the straight-shooting, plain talking “sheriff” is neither one. “Oh, Andy” indeed.

You can read it all here, but here are some of the salient points:

[snip] So how can the Obama administration claim that “guaranteed Medicare benefits will remain the same”? The answer is that the term “guaranteed” is a weasel word — a qualifier that sucks the meaning out of a phrase in the way that weasels supposedly suck the contents out of an egg. It may sound to the casual listener as though this ad is saying that the benefits of all Medicare recipients are guaranteed to stay the same — and that may well be the way the ad’s sponsors wish listeners to hear it. But what the administration is really saying is that only those benefits that are guaranteed in law will remain the same.

There’s even a section in the new law (section 3601) that says: “Nothing in the provisions of, or amendments made by, this Act shall result in a reduction of guaranteed benefits under title XVIII of the Social Security Act” (the title that establishes the Medicare program). Section 3602 says even Medicare Advantage recipients won’t suffer any reduction of “any benefits guaranteed by law.”

But here’s the catch: The extra benefits generally offered by Medicare Advantage plans aren’t guaranteed by law. They are offered by private insurance companies as inducements. The companies have been able to offer somewhat more generous packages than traditional, fee-for-service Medicare because the system pays them as much as 40 percent more per patient than it pays for traditional Medicare, according to the chief actuary. The average in 2009 was about 14 percent more, according to the most recent analysis by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, issued in February. But the new law generally eliminates the extra payments in the coming years. Foster, the chief actuary, estimates that federal spending for Medicare Advantage will be reduced by $145 billion over the law’s first decade.[snip]

Wow. So, it seems ol’ Andy wasn’t quite telling the truth after all, especially when you add in this Wall Street Journal article referenced by Brooks Jackson, “Health Law Augurs Transfer of Funds From Old To Young,” by Janet Adamy. Check out this particular tidbit:

[snip] “I’m sure that some of those additional benefits have been nice,” Nancy-Ann DeParle, who runs the White House’s Office of Health Reform, says of Medicare Advantage plans. “But I think what we have to look at here is what’s fair and what’s important for the strength of the Medicare program long term.”

Stuart Butler, a vice president at the conservative Heritage Foundation, says the White House is misrepresenting the benefits that accrue from Medicare payment cuts. “It uses it to create a new entitlement for a separate group of people rather than strengthening” the program, he says. Moreover, such cuts alone don’t pay for the law.

The law will spend $938 billion over a decade, mostly to expand coverage to lower-income Americans. To finance that, there will be $455 billion coming from cuts in government payments to health-care providers that serve patients on Medicare and two other federal programs. The hardest hit—to the tune of $136 billion—will be private insurance companies that run Medicare Advantage plans. [snip]

Oh, you won’t believe what all is in that article. I suggest you read the rest. It ain’t pretty, but I think the headline already made that point clear. Especially if you are older, that is.

As for the new ad, I’d say that Andy has some “‘splaining to do,” as Ricky Ricardo used to say. After lying to his fellow senior citizens, he needs to go to his room and “think about that thar thing,” and not come down until he understands how wrong lying is. Don’t you think?

  • EllenD

    I’m amused.
Many years ago, we were supposed to do a film with Andy Griffith. The world around Hollywood was that he used the N word frequently and abused his black costars.
    Ironic indeed.

  • Sassy

Andy has stayed too long at the fair. The disputes with Don Knotts and others in the cast left me believing Andy was afflicted with greed.
Most seniors understand their Medicare plans, and they know that cuts for the benefit of others come at their expense.
We no longer allow any mail from AARP into our home…it is dumped in the outside container!

  • EllenD

Ah, Amy, if you want a hero, Jimmy Stewart was as nice a person as they come.

  • Peggy Sue

I happened to catch this ad last night on TV and had the same reaction, Amy.  How far Mayberry has fallen!

It worries me, particularly for my in-laws, who are not wealthy, who are in their 80s now and suffering from the various ailments 80+ people face.  They depend on their Medicaire and Medicaire Advantage package to cover their ever-increasing medical expenditures.  And, of course, all these ads and speeches to sell the “fabulous” healthcare reform legislation stinks to high heaven. If it was so great, so utterly reformed, the American people would be cheering in the streets.

But they’re not.  Sacrificing coverage to seniors, who have paid their dues, is immoral.  But then, what else is new?

  • Khan Krum

I knew people that went to school with him in Chapel Hill.  He (and they, for that matter) have always been commies.

  • Olivia1998

If this new Health care reform was so great maybe they would have allowed the Congress and the Senate to read it before they voted on it.  Won’t that have been a great idea?
Look what happened last summer when  “you just don’t what’s good for you folks” got a chance to peek at some of it.  The truth came out Didn’t it?

  • CindyWhiteBaguetteW/OliveOilForDipping

Rev. Amy—-The news about Andy made me so mad that I wanted to yell: “Citizens arrest! Citizens arrest!”

(or more like “Citizeeans arreyest! Citizeeans arreyest!” That’s Gomer-style  :) )

Thanks, dear Rev, for the post!  And welcome back.

  • Retired

Andy cut a deal with Obama to be exempted from the dealth panels.  Pretty good deal, actually, considering his age.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

    Thanks, EllenD!

And I am disturbed to hear that abt Andy.  Seriously.  Wow.  Yep, Jimmy Stewart is looking better and better…

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Oh, Olivia – you know that Nancy said we would learn abt it AFTER it became law!  I mean, c’mon, what could POSSIBLY be wrong with that?!?!  Ahem…

Peggy Sue, you said it.  Obama acts like he did the seniors a favor by cutting back on their Medicare, then giving them a one-time check for $250.  Well, that’s just jake, unless their meds cost that, and more, each and every month.  So, they get to pick and choose just which meds they can afford.

Yeah, Andy probably doesn’t have to worry abt such things, but he should go without his supper tonight, too – like many other seniors have to do (especially with plans like this coming down the pike…

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Thanks, Cindy!  Good to be back.

And you said it all.  Or rather, Gomer will:

  • Tamara Cracker

  • Sassy

Let’s not forget that we are still in the game on healthcare reform.
Virginia’s Attorney General was not drummed out of the courtroom, so opposition continues.
Unlike the Arizona lawsuit where the judge ruled on different sections, the entire healthcare legislation falls if deemed unconstitutional.
States are using different approaches, but the Supreme Court may stop this administration’s plan in it’s tracks!

Go to your room, Andy and think on it for a spell.

  • WhatNow

Is Andy Griffith suppose to relate to the older generation? What’s the demographics that he’s suppose to influence?

He reminds me of all of the older stars, peddling something  and hoping people will remember them.

It’s hard to watch them now peddling worthless innovations. Pathetic.

  • EWard

Amen to the other posts!  I was mad as hell when I saw Andy’s lying a@@@…..

Do the math – we will have 30 million people added to HC but with same number of doctors.  It’s called rationing Andy.  There is a big difference between health care and the quality of coverage.

  • MBC

Missed you RRRA!  I work with the sick, disabled and elderly to get access to life-sustaining therapies and have not yet fathomed the impact these cuts will have on patients getting services.  Medicare reimbursement cuts to hospitals, MDs and other healthcare providers will leave only those with real insurance access to services and eventually this will dry up too.  The certain delays in claims payment to these providers will only serve to reduce the number of providers financially able to remain in business.  It’s going to get really ugly and I am heartsick for my country.

  • oowawa

Well Gollll-ee!  Remember in No Time For Sergeants when he made the toilet seats all stand at attention?  Remember on his comedy LP when he dropped his “big orange drank?”  Remember all the nice things he did for the folks in Mayberry . . . ?

This world just keeps on getting bitterer and bitterer (and there’s an ugly sneering word made up special for the Age of Obama) when you can’t even count on Andy Griffith anymore . . .

  • oowawa

Well, maybe if us old farts didn’t fart so much, the ice floes wouldn’t melt quite so fast . . .

  • Daisy Mae

I can’t get this ditty out of my head.  It’s sooo how I feel these days, thanks to the bobos, the AZ issues, hc issues, mosque in NYC, to mention a very few issues.

  • oowawa

Well, Ferd, you’re still gregarious with all those animals you’ve got hanging around the homestead!

But I know what you mean.  Hermit–Recluse-Troglodyte–”Old rockin’ chair’s got me–Cane by my side.”  Not to mention the shotgun.  Seems to me Andy Griffith’s father was like that in No Time For Sergeants . . .

  • oowawa

    “Andy, how could you?”

“Now, Aunt Bea, it’s not what you think.  You know, Opie’s all grown up now, and he’s a big Hollywood director, and he tells me that nice young fellow in the White House is just as honest as the day is long and he’ll do right by us.  So don’t you fret none, Aunt Bea.  Your medical insurance will be safe with Mr. Obama, you can count on it.  We can trust him.”

  • EWard

    MBC

You are right about providers going out of business.  This forces us into government run HC which gives them the power to ration.

    This sucks!

    Another perspective:

My father’s cardiologist took him off a medication two years ago that he had been on for nearly 15 years.  The Doc made a passing remark as to the trend that they medicate 100 people to actually help 1.  In other words, we have all been used physically, emotionally, and monitarily by the medical and insurance companies.

Within two weeks my dad started feeling much better than he had the previous 15 years!  When we reported back, the doc said he figured that was what we would say.  As to whether my dad ever needed the medication in the first place, the doc sidestepped answering that question.

My physician told me twenty years ago that the medical/pharmaceutical industries were pushing new drugs and tests with questionable side effects to make money.

My children’s father survived colon cancer, as well, so my kids have their colonoscopies every 5 years and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let their lives be in jeopardy by a truly stupid and largely uncaring government.  I’ll do whatever I have to to get their tests paid for, if it comes to that.  These are peoples’ lives they’re playing with.

Cunningham said in a Tuesday phone interview with TAS.

“They were frightened and they were angry and they wanted us to find some kind of relief for them from what the federal government was proposing.”

In response, she got together with other state legislators….

Yep, and now that he’s POTUS, aren’t we paying to keep his records sealed?

And after they said “no” one of their braindead Senators, that would be Claire McCaskill said “Message Received” and then to show that it might have been received but not understood, she said the following:

    “
“I certainly noticed the vote on Prop C, the healthcare law, and message received,” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) said.

McCaskill, however, makes the point that people “don’t realize” how beneficial the “mandate” for health care will be. “A lot of noise about the mandate that people have gotten so focused on that they don’t realize that there’s going to be more access and affordability and more choices,” she said.

See folks, nothing wrong with the health bill, just you ignorant peasants that don’t know what’s good for you. Lucky for McCaskill she doesn’t have to face the voters until 2012. I’m sure she thinks they will have forgotten all about this by then. And sadly, she may be right.

    RE: Andy Griffith

He’s an ACTOR. It’s his job to stand in front of the lights and say lines written for him. That the lines are/were written to influence, rather than amuse the public is just how it is.

Once upon a time he was funny, if you enjoyed the lampooning of hillbillies and rednecks.

    Now, he’s just a punchline.
