“Sour” voters reluctant to award Democrats for their legislative success are one of the reasons the party is trailing in the polls, according to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). But Senate leaders will keep trying to change that with a jobs-based September agenda, the Senate Democratic Conference vice chairman said Thursday. (Snip) “It’s the world we’re in. It’s a much more negative, critical world, and people are sour now,” he said. “The thing they’re most sour about is the future, not the present.”

The battle over plans to build a mosque near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York is fuelling a surge in anti-Muslim protests across the US, including opposition to new Islamic centres from California to Georgia. Religious leaders and civil rights activists warn that a tide of Islamophobia that has swept the country since the destruction of the twin towers is being heightened by political exploitation of the New York dispute before nationwide elections and is increasingly bound up with hostility to immigrants and other forms of racism.

Warwick, R.I. We’ve long known that our World War II veterans were dying at an alarming rate. Some estimates put the figure at 1,000 a day. With them go important personal stories that will no longer be told, along with photo albums, scrapbooks and mementos. But as Sunday’s 65th anniversary of VJ Day approaches, I’m happy to report that for all the talk about the dwindling numbers of “the Greatest Generation,” there are new generations stepping up to keep their memory alive. Namely, the veterans’ children and grandchildren….

President Obama says Islam has always been part of America, which raises the question, does the president know something about American history that we don’t? It has become customary for presidents to offer greetings to various religious communities on the occasion of their most holy days. Presidents Ford and Carter both issued Ramadan messages, as did Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush. The Ramadan greeting became intensely political during Mr. Bush’s tenure because he was seeking to dispel the charge that the war on terrorism was a crusade against Islam….
