The battle over plans to build a mosque near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York is fuelling a surge in anti-Muslim protests across the US, including opposition to new Islamic centres from California to Georgia. Religious leaders and civil rights activists warn that a tide of Islamophobia that has swept the country since the destruction of the twin towers is being heightened by political exploitation of the New York dispute before nationwide elections and is increasingly bound up with hostility to immigrants and other forms of racism.

With them go important personal stories that will no longer be told, along with photo albums, scrapbooks and mementos. President Obama says Islam has always been part of America, which raises the question, does the president know something about American history that we don't? It has become customary for presidents to offer greetings to various religious communities on the occasion of their most holy days. Presidents Ford and Carter both issued Ramadan messages, as did Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush. The Ramadan greeting became intensely political during Mr. Bush's tenure because he was seeking to dispel the charge that the war on terrorism was a crusade against Islam....

Their assets are in a blind trust, so that they don't know, allegedly, how the money is invested. That is supposed to keep the president from influencing the value of his portfolio through legislation or other actions. He can spend money of his own, he just can't say how his investments are set up for the duration of his term.

The political parties and candidates should realize that the only contribution they should be asking for is a citizen's vote. That and not the money spent is what gets them into office. Yes, I know, campaigns..but these days you can do it on a shoestring, given the internet and other almost free venues. So if the candidates and parties concentrate on doing right by the citizens of this country, they will get the votes to continue to do so. That is what they should be doing, not collecting money to bullshit in more places on their campaigns.
