We’re Number Eleven! We’re Number Eleven! Woohoo! *Open Thread*

Well, at least according to Newsweek, that is. Yes, the brain trust at Newsweek have decided that the US ranks eleventh in the world.

Why? Well, I bet you can guess if you think about it for a minute. Give up? This headline by Brent Baker at Newsbusters will make it clear, “Newsweek Ranks U.S. the 11th ‘Best Country’ – Bush’s Fault, Obama Can Stem The Tide.” Yep, it’s all Bush’s fault, but Obama the Messiah can right this listing ship:

Newsweek, recently sold for one dollar by the Washington Post Company but still in its hands, ranked the United States 11th, just behind Denmark, in this week’s “The Best Countries in the World” cover story which put Finland at #1, followed by Switzerland and Sweden. There’s hope for improvement, however, thanks to George W. Bush’s departure from the White House and Barack Obama’s arrival. Michael Hirsh explained the beyond the top ten rank:

America hasn’t recovered from the serious blows to its stature delivered by nearly a decade of policy debacles. As Obama never tires of reminding the American public…he inherited a Herculean task: the Augean-stable-size mess left behind by George W. Bush.

The August 23 & 30 two-week edition cover story package certainly reflected Obama’s policy agenda. A sidebar (apparently not online) on the nations with the best health care, which put Japan at the top, touted fourth-best Spain where “universal coverage is a constitutionally guaranteed right, and there are no out-of-pocket expenses aside from some prescription drugs.” The U.S. wasn’t even one of the top ten countries listed (the full list online has the U.S. at #26 in health, tied with the Czech Republic and Chile and behind Slovenia.) [snip] (Click here to read the rest.)

Blech. Seriously, these people need to put down the Hopium pipe, and you know they’re on it. How else to explain selling a magazine for a BUCK? I mean, I know things are tight right now, but c’mon! Ahem.

Perhaps it would interest the authors of this piece to learn that Bush is actually more popular in some major “frontline” districts than their Revered One. It seems those areas are ones of great concern to Democrats since they currently hold the seats there. Oops!

But back to being Number 11 – woohoo, celebrate, woot, woot! I’ll let Stephen Colbert have the last word on this (again), and Newsweek, too:

And this dreck by Barker is a perfect example of why Newsweek went bellyup.  You can’t call this journalism or anything closely resembling a balanced piece.  This is Obama propaganda.  It’s the same thing we read during the 2008 primary and GE.  Who could forget the Evan Thomas quote?  Evan Thomas, the Assistant Managing Editor of the noble Newsweek enterprise crooned to Charlie Rose [in reference to Obama]: “He’s almost a god.”

I rest my case.  They were lucky to get a dollar.

OMG.  Really, are they gonna try to run the election on that same dribble.

  • Peggy Sue

People on both sides of this issue need to step back and cool off. Sorry, but I suspect the flames are deliberately being fanned because of the upcoming elections.  For the Left it’s a rallying point for righteous indignation, serving as a smoke screen to all the failed policy decisions and serious problems facing the country.  For the Right, it’s a way of reminding us of the raw wounds of 9/11 and to suggest that anyone left of center is somehow traitorous, not a real American.

It’s ugly, all of it. And it won’t end well unless cool heads prevail.  Here’s hoping that Governor Paterson and Archbishop Dolan can dial back the anger and reach some sort of compromise.

“The State Department is maintaining a “counter-misinformation” page on an America.gov blog that attempts to “debunk a conspiracy theory” that President  Obama was not born in the United States, as if the topic were equivalent to believing space aliens visit Earth in flying saucers.
However, in the attempt to debunk the Obama birth-certificate controversy, the State Department author confirmed Obama was a dual citizen of the U.K. and the U.S. from 1961 to 1963 and a dual citizen of Kenya and the U.S. from 1963 to 1982, because his father was a Kenyan citizen when Obama was born in 1961.

Leventhal’s entry on “The Obama Birth Controversy” at America.gov reads remarkably like the comparable entry at the Obama 2008 presidential campaign website, “Fight the Smears,” suggesting the State Department is merely repeating Obama campaign argumentation in a partisan fashion, rather than conducting an even-handed and original inquiry into the Obama eligibility controversy.”

It’s obvious what the message really is.  “Oh please stay with Mohamed’s messanger Obama.  he will save us and be number one again.  but if you bad infidels vote conservative in November.  Allah will punish you and the great Obama will not be your Caliphate.”

  • Noogan

“Compromise?” No, it’s not “compromise.” It is now capitulating to hate and threats of more hate. I don’t support a “compromise” any longer. Now, I support the mosque being built at the old Burlington Coat Factory location.

Yes, it’s ugly, “all of it.” But, there is only one thing which should guide us, since it’s all “ugly.” That one thing is “the law.” We are a nation of laws, not men; or so they say. Given that, I will just have to amend my former opposition, and stand by the Constitution and the law, which gives these people the right to build that mosque on that location.

If people who are victims of 9/11 are offended, I can only respond to them: Living well is the best revenge. Don’t let your hate for those who perpetrated the atrocity rule your life.

The “left” is not something I’m part of, so I don’t care what their arguments are. The simple fact is that the locality has ruled, according to the law; the mosque/cultural center has every right to build there; Constitutionally, they’ve got every right to build there. I’m just going to support the Constitution in this issue now. All of the rest is just noise.

  • candymarl red bone cracker

I just don’t get it.  From the left: If we don’t allow the mosque to be built the terrorists will get us.

From the Right: If we don’t invade Iraq the terrorists will get us.

    Same argument different playing fields.

I don’t think the government gets it. People will be and have been hurt if a compromise is not reached.  This is the time when a real President would step up to the plate to try to bring the country together in common cause. I guess unless it’s a beer summit it’s above Obama’s paygrade.

  • Onofre’s arm

It’s interesting to note that the first Islamic country on the list is Kuwait, at #40, and except for Japan and South Korea, the top 19 are all Judeo/Christian based countries. How strange.

  • candymarl red bone cracker

I’m sorry but I think this is deliberate. The race card is played out so how to rally the base?  New deck new card.  The “if you don’t build one damn mosque you hate all Muslims card”.  Why this mosque and why now? Distract from the lousy economy, the hits from the healthcare bill, the fear and uncertainty in the business sector.  Let’s also not think about the ecological disaster in the Gulf. Last but not least the horrible state of unemployment in the black community.

This is out and out treason in my book.

OBAMA HAULS ARIZONA BEFORE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

    http://www.aipnews.com
    August 24, 2010
    Ben Johnson, Floyd Reports

Apparently Barack Obama is not content to make a federal case out of his immigration feud with Arizona; he just made it an international one.
The president’s first-ever report on U.S. human rights to the UN Human Rights Council contains a rich vein of offensive material. So far, one aspect has not been reported: our petty president used the situation to bash Arizona’s immigration law — and possibly transfer jurisdiction over the law from Arizona to the UN. Throughout the report, which sounds like an Obama campaign speech, the president discusses “the original flaw” of the U.S. Constitution, America’s tolerance for slavery, and his version of our long and despicable history of discriminating against and oppressing minorities, women, homosexuals, and the handicapped. After each complaint, he addresses how he is delivering us from ourselves, patting himself on the back for such initiatives as ending “torture,” promoting Affirmative Action, and passing health care legislation.
In his section on “Values and Immigration,” he praised the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to provide better medical care for detainees and increase “Alternatives To Detention” (e.g., letting them go). Then he turned to the one state that has had the temerity to stand in his way of fundamentally transforming the American electorate:
A recent Arizona law, S.B. 1070, has generated significant attention and debate at home and around the world. The issue is being addressed in a court action that argues that the federal government has the authority to set and enforce immigration law. That action is ongoing; parts of the law are currently enjoined.

    “… dual citizen of the U.K. and the U.S. from 1961 to 1963 …”

    -

On Obama’s command, Attorney General Eric Holder has sued the State of Arizona for passing a law that he criticized without reading, and which merely upholds federal law. (He gave sanctuary cities a pass.) He now threatens an additional lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio for “racial profiling” when arresting illegal immigrants near the Mexican border.
Obama’s turns his skirmish with Jan Brewer from a states rights dispute into an international human rights cause. It also places Arizona’s law in the hands of the United Nations.
The national report is but the first step of the international government’s review process. On November 5, the United States will be examined by a troika of UN bureaucrats from France, Japan, and Cameroon (an oppressive nation which is a member of the Organization of Islamic Conference). This trio will consider three items: Obama’s self-flagellating report, reports written about America by UN tribunals or international governing bodies, and testimony from NGOs with a pronounced anti-American bias. It will also consider “voluntary pledges and commitments made by the State,” such as suspending an Arizona state law.
Then the French, Japanese, and Cameroon diplomats will draw up a plan of action for the United States to implement.
Nations are re-examined every four years. The Human Rights Council looks for voluntary compliance. However, its website asserts, “The Human Rights Council will decide on the measures it would need to take in case of persistent non-cooperation by a State with the” World Body.
When the Left cannot win at the ballot box (virtually every time), it overrules the people in the courts. Now that Obama is not sure he can prevail in the courts, he has overruled the American people by hauling Arizona and the two-thirds of Americans who support its law before the United Nations.

We are not just a nation of laws, we are also a nation of common courtesy, respect, and good manners. Did you advocate for Fred Phelp’s right to express his religious freedom with his hateful anti-gay signs and protests of military funerals?

Skinheads have a Constitutional right to march their hatred down my street, people have a Constitutional right to burn a flag, people have the right to all sorts of things under the First amendment, but I also have the right to register my disgust and to fight them every step of the way.

By the way, have you found out yet whether women can enter through the front door of this mosque or must they go around back and pray in segregation so as not to contaminate the rest of the congregation?

How to Win the Clash of Civilizations
President Obama, in his own way, is a One Worlder. In his 2009 Cairo speech, he called for a new era of understanding between America and the Muslim world. It would be a world based on “mutual respect, and . . . upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles.”

Our civilization is not indestructible: It needs to be actively defended. This was perhaps Huntington’s most important insight. The first step towards winning this clash of civilizations is to understand how the other side is waging it—and to rid ourselves of the One World illusion.

  • arabella trefoil

Come on, Obama! Newsweek gave you a head start. I know you get the United States down to at least #25. Maybe even more.

I see that Nubbins or Noggins or whatever his name is refuses to go away. We are a rule of laws. That includes

    Zoning Laws

I have already bored my fellow No Quarterites to tears with my knowledge, and hard-won experience of dealing with the nitty-gritting of planning commissions, boards of architectural review, landmark commissions, tree ordinances, environmental impact statements, etc. Depending upon local laws, a developer must go through the legal processes including public hearings and impact studies before anything can be built. It takes a long time. Decisions can be appealed. Citizens have input.

Weather you are putting in a swimming pool, a new driveway, or building a hospital, you must submit to the rule of law.

And no, this is not NIMBYism. At one hearing I attended the developer wanted a zoning variance so that he could put six McMansions on three cul-de-sacs. Someone in the audience (an ordinary citizen) pointed out the the cul-de-sacs were too small to allow firetrucks access. So back to the drawing board for the developer. The planning commission failed to notice this flaw in the design. That’s why we still have public hearings.

Because ordinary citizens often spot important deficiencies that are overlooked.

This has nothing, nada, zero to do with freedom to practice religion. Although should a developer try to harrass, intimidate or silince a citizen by using a SLAPP suit to shut her up, that is a threat to the First Ammendmet right to freedom of speech.

So before people get all high and mighty about building this mosque, remember there are going to be lots of hearings, court cases etc. before one stone gets laid. And most likely the issues will be about traffic studies, easements, and handicap accesss. And the passionate liberals who are yelling and screaming about building this mosque will have fallen by the wayside by then. Because spending night after night attending public hearings, taking notes, and gathering information is a real drag. Not to mention a crimp on your social life.

OOOkkaaay! Not exactly what I had in mind but to quote that classic movie Babe: “It’ll do pig it’ll do.”

  • Yttik

I think this is deliberate, too. You get the Left all riled up about the threat of racism against Muslims, and that wave of self rightiousness will hopefully carry them to the polls for the midterms.

That’s how they roll, the Dems need to feel all puffed up and indignant about their superiority against the rest of the stupid, racist, bitter, little folks. It’s almost like an adrenilin rush for them. Meanwhile, they really care nothing about the groups they allegedly rush to protect, they just want to get their self rightiousness high so they can feel all superior for a few minutes.

  • CindyWhiteBaguettew/OliveOilforDipping

oowawa—-That a fantastic  video!! Thanks, kiddo!

  • Peggy Sue

Noogan, I agree that the developers have every legal right to build there.  But anyone with common sense should have known that this project would have sparked controversy and anger.  The developers could have layed the groundwork for “their bridge of understanding” with an outreach long before this.  And the politicians and financial wizards in NYC could have worked with far more earnestness and speed to rebuild at the 9/11 site.  That gaping, empty space is itself an affront, a national disgrace.

And yes, compromise.  That’s what people do when they’re rational and want to settle an ugly dispute. As I said before, accommodation is not a dirty word. It means neither side will get everything they demand.  But this tug of war needs to end because it’s not only ugly, it’s dangerous. Whichever way it goes, the issue is not the be all and end all of the serious problems facing the country.

So, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. Personally, I think the politics entering this mess is dispicable, from both sides.

As to the US being number 11, I apologize to the British for this, but those people need to go study British military history. Anybody who believes America is a mean country hasn’t done very good research. Seriously, the British way was to invade, annihilate, and colonize the crap out of a country, harvesting all the resources as the spoils of war. That’s why all through history, war has been extremely profitable. Along comes the US where wars actually cost us money! It’s maddening for the citizens here, many who would prefer a more isolationist approach, but one thing that makes the US unique is the way we rebuild and assist others all over the world. Sure we’re imperfect, but we’ve always made an effort not to annihilate, colonize and harvest the spoils of war. And we’re the first on the ground in natural disasters and we’ve paid out billions in reparations.

A recent example in the news is Haiti, not an American problem, actually the blame lies with the French who just gave them the finger regarding their request for any sort of reparations. Study other countries and how they have behaved all through history, all over the world, and you gain a better appreciation for the US, even with all her imperfections.

Oh yah, you know the 80 something bodies found in Mexico that are supposed to be the result of drug war killings, well the latest is they are probably from Guatemala, El Salvador, and other Central and South American countries.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_drug_war_mexico

So let me get this straight.  Illegal aliens living or traveling in Mexico are massacred by drug cartels and/or Mexican citizens. Obviously illegal aliens in Mexico aren’t safe at all.  But who gets lectured? The Arizona government by the Mexican government for the way they treat illegal aliens by expecting them to provide proof of citizenship when stopped for some law violation.  Hmm, rich how they think America is the racist and intolerable and unfair country to illegals.

We are not just a nation of laws, we are also a nation of common courtesy, respect, and good manners.

Would that it were still true, yttik.  However if you missed the video yesterday of the Lefties and old hippies advocating for the Mosque and their “Muslim brothers and sisters” you’d have to re-think that.  I’ve never seen such lack of civility or respect for opposing views.  They really looked as if they wanted to kill the guy with the video who challenged the Indian Muslim and his trashing of Israel as “racist”.  Very ugly people and while watching them, I thought we might be seeing the beginnings of storm troopers.

I noted yesterday that if Fred Phelps (couldn’t remember his last name, thanks) tried to set up his church in the center of The Castro, he’d be stopped in a second; he’d never get a license…or a lease.  And I’d back that too.  He is an odious bigot and has no business there.  Go wherever…not there.  He wouldn’t only affect gays but the general peace of the population.

Been watching Greta’s updates this week on the violence in Mexico–extremely depressing.  Arizona has human rights issues, who knew?  I’ll have to tell my relatives and friends who live there to emigrate.  And my sig other needs to quickly sell the house he bought on a short sale at an even lower price and get out of there before he’s abused.

It would surprise me if Ms. Ronstadt is not on the Leftie side as well…considering her long time relationship with Jerry.  Bo Diddley?  Not so sure.  He always struck me as really loving the USA dispite obvious racism encountered on the road.  He seemed to rise above it all in his creativity.

And as I mentioned elsewhere–the guy cussing him is worried about the protestors causing more violence against the U.S.  So what?  Most mulims are peaceful or muslims are violent?  Which is it?  Still feels to me that these people DO think this mosque will “protect” that area of NY from being bombed AGAIN for the third time.

Here’s a suggestion for people who want to get involved, but don’t want to run for office: sit on a commission, board, etc. for your local government. The members of the Mainstream Media always saw the attacks as the defining moment of the much-hated Bush Presidency. Elaine, Obama appointed Susan Rice personally with no input from Hillary.  Susan Rice never liked Hillary; it was obvious from her commets about Hillary during the primaries, for which Rice had to apologize later.  When the adm. cannot say that Hillary said, or did, they simply say, the State Department.  It is worth noting that Hillary hasn’t said anything about the mosque at all.  To me that is saying a lot for her.

I don’t see the problem here. Death threats?  Threats not against a  certain group of people are meaningless.  That 82 y/o holocaust survivor? What the heck does he know? I mean protesting the placement of a building is exactly the same as rounding people up, putting them on trains, running them through showers and shoving them into gas chambers where they all died.

Not only that  but I have touched bullet holes in stone walls where people were lined up, shot to death by Nazis.  That  means nothing as well.

So exactly where are these internment camps where Muslims are being rounded up and gassed located?  I’d like to know and I would try my best to stop this horror. If it were happening. Cuz you know it’s the same as protesting a location of a building for personal, emotional, historic, or sentimental reasons.

NY Muslim project spurs support coalition

    Wed, Aug 25 2010
    By Michelle Nichols
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Muslim, Jewish, Christian and civic groups formed a coalition on Wednesday to back a plan for a Muslim center near the site of the World Trade Center attacks in New York that has sparked heated national debate.
The cultural center and mosque face fierce opposition from conservative politicians and people who consider its location insensitive to families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11 attacks by al Qaeda militants in 2001.
But the newly formed New York Neighbors for American Values, made up of more than 40 religious and civic groups, said the debate was creating fear and division and that it would fight for U.S. constitutional freedoms to be upheld.
“We were not attacked by the Muslim world,” said Donna O’Connor, spokeswoman for September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, whose pregnant daughter was killed in the World Trade Center attacks. “We 100 percent fully support the Islamic cultural center in New York City.”

  • Noogan

New York (CNN) – A coalition of at least 40 religious and civic organizations Wednesday announced the creation of an alliance to show support for the Islamic community center and mosque proposed to be built near New York’s ground zero. The group has launched a website — nyneighbors.org — and announced a candlelight vigil to be held at the site of the proposed center on the eve of the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attack.Members of the coalition gathered at a municipal building in Manhattan to announce the group’s creation.Talat Hamdani, whose son was killed in the attack, told CNN on Wednesday, “The issue is not about location. It is about our rights as Americans.”"All those people who died that day … they were murdered for being Americans. We should honor those people who were murdered that day by living up to America’s core values,” Hamdani said.

Ron Paul issued a statement today excoriating conservative opponents of Park51 for violating their alleged belief in religious freedom and property rights, and added:

In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.
They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. . . Defending the controversial use of property should be no more difficult than defending the 1st Amendment principle of defending controversial speech. But many conservatives and liberals do not want to diminish the hatred for Islam — the driving emotion that keeps us in the wars in the Middle East and Central Asia. . . .
The outcry over the building of the mosque, near ground zero, implies that Islam alone was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. According to those who are condemning the building of the mosque, the nineteen suicide terrorists on 9/11 spoke for all Muslims. . . . . This is all about hate and Islamaphobia.

It is indeed “about hate and Islamaphobia,” and that is the driving, enabling force behind so many of America’s most controversial and destructive policies.

  • Noogan

The only way to stop the rot is for President Obama to consider for a moment what is good for the United States rather than for his political party’s hold on power.  He should act like a true statesman instead of a used car salesman.  If he is uncertain how to do that there are a number of good nineteenth century political biographies that he can read up on to learn the ropes.  He must stand up before the American people and state simply and unequivocally that Washington opposes any new military action in the Middle East and that the United States is not threatened by Iran and will take no part in any military action directed against it.  He might add that the US will further consider anyone staging such an attack as an aggressor nation and will immediately break off relations before demanding a UN Security Council vote to condemn the action.  Will that happen?  Fat chance.

The process of settlement is a “Civilization-Jihadist Process” with all the word means. The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions. Without this level of understanding, we are not up to this challenge and have not prepared ourselves for Jihad yet.”

Too bad this much attention wasn’t given when the Sundance Lodge was vandalized: then again these are just Native Americans.
    Source:
    http://newsok.com/battle-over-sun-dance-heats-up/article/1871477

Before it was forbidden the annual Sun Dance was held by many American Native tribes, practically all of the Plains Indian tribes. It was performed in the summer, usually in late July or early August, after the buffalo hunts. The Christian missionaries along with the federal government sought to prohibit the dance after seeing of the practices that were executed in the ceremony, especially the piercing of the young men’s chests. This to them was brutal torture because they failed to comprehend the spiritual significance of the practices and the dance. Some of the practices were banned in Canada in 1880 and the dance in the United States in 1904.
The Native American tribes who practiced sun dance were:
The Arapaho, Arikara, Asbinboine, Cheyenne, Crow, Gros, Ventre, Hidutsa, Sioux, Plains Cree, Plains Ojibway, Sarasi, Omaha, Ponca, Ute, Shoshone, Kiowa, and Blackfoot tribes. Their rituals varied from tribe to tribe.
The sun dance was outlawed in the latter part of the nineteenth century, partly because certain tribes inflicted self-torture as part of the ceremony, which settlers found gruesome, and partially as part of a grand attempt to westernize Indians by forbidding them to engage in their ceremonies and speak their language. The Sun Dance is again legal through the passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978*, which President Jimmy Carter signed into law. This legislation granted the American Natives the right to practice their traditional religious ceremonies.
