Mosque Rallies And Other News Of The Day

There are some doozies in the news this morning. But first, in case you missed it, there was a big rally near Ground Zero on Sunday. Protesters and supporters of the mosque/cultural center plans to be built in that area showed up to make their voices heard. Clearly, this issue is not going away anytime soon:

You know, when I saw the CNN report, I just knew that CNN was under-reporting the numbers of those opposed to the mosque being built near Ground Zero. And CNN made it seem as if there were a couple hundred protesters on BOTH sides. I knew they were full of crap:

[snip] Hundreds of critics and supporters of the proposed center in New York showed up despite an overcast and drizzly sky to express their views amid the national debate over the facility.

Police estimated that supporters of the center numbered up to 250, and critics numbered about 450 during the demonstration. [snip]

Uh huh. Nothing like inflating the numbers on one side, and deflating them on the other. Oh, you just gotta love the LMSM (Lame Mainstream Media). Or not.

By the way, if you think for one second Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf did not know that the landing gear from one of the planes flew into that building, and the relevance of it being so close to Ground Zero, you are sadly mistaken. That is why he picked that location, and why Muslims started coming to that building to pray. At least according to this December 8, 2009 NY Times article, “Muslim Prayers And Renewal Near Ground Zero“:

[snip]But for months now, out of the public eye, an iron gate rises every Friday afternoon, and with the outside rumblings of construction at ground zero as a backdrop, hundreds of Muslims crowd inside, facing Mecca in prayer and listening to their imam read in Arabic from the Koran.

The building has no sign that hints at its use as a Muslim prayer space, but these modest beginnings point to a far grander vision: an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors.

The location was precisely a key selling point for the group of Muslims who bought the building in July. A presence so close to the World Trade Center, “where a piece of the wreckage fell,” said Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the cleric leading the project, “sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11.” [snip] (Click here to read the rest.)

Nope, that site was no accident. It was chosen PRECISELY because it is close to Ground Zero, and because part of the landing gear fell.

Again, to those who keep acting like this is just some random site and those opposed to it are off our rockers, here’s the proof. From Imam Rauf’s own mouth. Satisfied yet? Yeah, that’s about what I expected – no amount of facts will matter. Whatever.

And then there is this story. It is no secret that California has been struggling mightily with its budget and deficits. That makes the following story even more disturbing than it would be otherwise:

Have these people lost their minds? Marble? In a public high school? While they are having to cut back on Education? That is just nuts.

Okay, one more, if you can stand it. This is the former head of the DNC, failed presidential candidate, and former governor, Howard Dean, giving advice to the Obama camp. Wait until you hear it. There is a bonus discussion about an organization funding Republicans:

Oh. My. Gosh. A bit of advice, Governor Dean – put down the Hopium pipe. You have had way too much…

And George Soros doesn’t hide behind an organization? Really? Huh. Is there an organization he funds that supports Democrats that has his name in it? If so, lemme know.

There ya go – a few stories of the day. Feel free to talk about these, or any other, stories.

Rev Amy, you are so right on about the lame stream media. I was at the  ground zero  rally, against the megamosque,  yesterday.  I was so  energized by the huge crowd and the speakers. I   have no idea how to count heads at  such an event,  but I   am sure  450 or 500  way underrepresents   the numbers  of the anti gz mosque  folks.  There was a small crowd of about 50 people standing on a corner  who were  in the opposite camp.  I   was disgusted when I later saw news reports equating  the groups, describing them as ” dueling rallies.”   Truth in reporting is  definitely a lost art these days.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Thank you for that eye-witness corroboration, spsuzee.  I appreciate that!  I knew, just from the photos, that one number I saw (around 200) couldn’t possibly be right.  And I wondered if the numbers were abt even for the two rallies – that’s how the two articles I read made it seem (the CNN one, and I believe it was an AP one).  Typical.

    So, how WAS the rally?

  • MG

Here’s the info on Imam:  http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/  How he truly sees the West!  He Claims that America has Islamic blood on their hands.. What about the Islamic’s bloody hands with the killing of their own people, and people who worship G-d as they Please.
What about their intolerance to those who think or pray differently.  They do not hold truth because they have none!

  • Talk2ThePaw

Fox’s man on the ground at the demonstrations said thousands in protest against and about 75 protestors in favor.  Doocy interviewed people on both sides so he was in the middle of it all and I choose to believe his numbers over the lmsm.

  • SWPAnnA

In a country that elected an unknown whose lapdog 4th Estate protected, propped him up and produced his iconic image, the awakening has rendered the Media utterly unworthy of trust.  People who watch the news at all do so now for amusement only.  This was a payday in that category, because, of course, we all know better now.

I watched it on FoxNews most of yesterday.

    RRAmy,

I feel that this is a very important subject, on many levels.  I also feel that
it will be a long time until this dies down…..

Is it OK with you if I link each thread to the last?

It will make it easier to track down sources, IMHO.

  • Armymom

Of course they picked the site, which is exactly the problem according to most of America. What is it now about 70% against this mosque? I say let them build it when women are no longer stoned to death, when they drive, and not wear those barbaric dresses. No more honor killings and treating women as second class citizens or chattel. And when a church can be built in Mecca. Otherwises they can “f’k off” and frankly I don’t give a damn what someone wants to call me or my thoughts, they too can f’k off. No mosque or Islamic “YMCA” at that site.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

    Certainly, Breeze.  Thanks for asking!

And yes, I think it is important, too.

Btw, there is a new Rasmussan poll out abt the whole issue.  Seems a lot more people are following this issue now, and most of them are opposed to the mosque being built there.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Thanks, Talk – that’s what I understood from him, too.

MG, I am waiting for some more corroboration on those tapes.  They certainly seem authentic, and they certainly expose Rauf as being FAR from a moderate.  Thanks for the link!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

    Dang, Armymom, preach it!  :-D

And yes, of course they picked it, but people like Jon Stewart, Charlie Rangel, Obama, all act like it is idiocy to act like it is too close, and completely negate that part of one of the jets landed in that building, too.  To read in the NY Times, that Rauf was VERY much aware of that is telling indeed.

GREAT comment, Armymom (and how’s your son doing?).

  • kafir

America is at a critical pivot now!

If the  mosque is allowed to be built at ground zero in New York City- the no:1 hub of Economy in America- it symbolizes the beginning of end of free enterprise of America.

This victory by Islam at Ground Zero epitomizes the hundreds and thousand of mosques can no longer be stopped from being built across the lands all over the United States!

The Ground Zero mosque must be killed absolutely! It’s non-negotiable!

Thursday during the 1 p.m. hour, CNN’s “Newsroom,” this exchange took place between CNN reporter Ali Velshi andTime Magazine’s deputy international editor Bobby Ghosh: VELSHI: The name Cordoba- some people are associating it with Muslim rule and bloody battles, when, in fact, Cordoba was one of the finest times in relations between the major religions. GHOSH: Exactly right- in interfaith discourse- VELSHI: Yeah- GHOSH: And the great mosque of Cordoba that people are talking about and that Newt Gingrich was talking about- the man who built it, the Muslim prince who built it, bought it from a Christian group….

  • Hokma

The number of protestors opposing was in the thousands. It was interesting that one pro-Obama New York newspaper I read would not publish the number. But they did publish the number for the people who were for the mosque. They said about 150. That is exactly twice as much as what you said. I’ll bet your number was correct.

  • Armymom

He’s doing very well RRRA. It’s good to have him home, but I know he has to go back at some point in time.

And yes, this mosque makes me mad and people who claim there are “moderate muslims” are like those who claim they can fix a pedophile. The list could go on, such as killing gays, vice police, if you’re not a “muslim” you either convert, die, or pay a “tax”. Years ago, when I was single raising 3 kids, I sold Life Accident and Health insurance. I worked for a company, well known and their manager was from Iran, along with most of the males in the office. Of course I was the only woman. It was hell. When I met their wives, it was like seeing women who were dead in the eyes, if you know what I mean. They were “lifeless” and fearful. Their husbands spoke to them in their language and you could see them jump with fear. I was treated very badly as an employee and later, after I quit, found out the only reason I was hired was to make them look “tolerant”. I have no use for that religion at all. And no, I don’t give a tinker’s ass what anyone thinks about that. I’ve been around them and wouldn’t do it voluntarily again for anything in this world.

Where was the media`s concern for religion back in 1999 when the museum in New York displayed the Virgin Mary covered in dung.

  • Olivia1998

It was Peter Ducy (Sorry if his name is spelled wrong he’s Steve’s son) Peter said 1,000 to 2,000 against and about 75 to 100 for.  After his reporting the numbers started to change and today I heard a Fox reporter say 500 against and 200 for.  How do they do this and live with themselves?  I think the White House calls them.

  • Armymom

It’s always been the norm to ridicule Christians or anything about them. Of course, they don’t have to worry about being killed for mocking Christianity like they do Islam. You see cartoons and pictures being displayed mocking Jesus, but hey, if you do that to Mohamoooood, then you take the risk of being killed as an infidel. Well, I’m an infidel and I won’t follow a murderous, pedophile who drank like a fish and call him a prohet. My Christ died for me and  my sins, in Islam, you have to kill yourself (martyr) for theirs.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

And yes RRRA, it was very FRUSTRATING. When they wanted to talk about you, they would not speak English. You could hear the snickers, the looks. The rally was  exhillarating. Despite a steady drizzle, folks were upbeat  and very reverential toward the imposing view of  the  hallowed ground  and the memory of those who fell there. There were many who held aloft photos of loved ones they lost on 9/11. I  was surrounded by patriots from all across the country,  including NY  firefighters, first responders, construction workers. There was a large group of bikers who  rode from Schenksville, Pa to the Pentagon, and then to Ground Zero. There were chants of ” Obama must go”  and anger  directed at Mayor Bloomberg. But I saw the crowd as mostly positive, definitely non-violent. When Daniel Rodriguez sang God Bless America,  every voice raised with his, loud and clear. I am so glad I went.

Is Imam Rauf Going to Be
    Another Reverend Wright?

    National Review,
    by Victor Davis Hanson

    Original Article

    8/23/2010

Self-described Sufi moderate Imam Rauf may prove to be an Islamic version of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. With Wright, the Left kept insisting that outrage over his racist and anti-American remarks was driven by right-wing racism, and for a while, the narrative worked — hence Obama’s pre-under-the-bus assertion that he “could no more disown Reverend Wright than” etc. But then Wright committed the mortal sin of insulting the elite media right at their embryo, at the D.C. National Press Club.

    So too Imam Rauf.

He has a vast record of quackery — the latest tidbit is his 2005 contorted assertion that Westerners have more innocent Muslim blood on their hands than does al-Qaeda (e.g., “We tend to forget, in the West, that the United States has more Muslim blood on its hands than al Qaida has on its hands of innocent non-Muslims”), presumably because between 1991 and 2003 America tried to stop Saddam’s aggressions and WMD program through non-violent sanctions.

Given Rauf’s long paper trail and bad habit of talking in different personas to different audiences, much more will drip out each day, as was the case with Wright’s DVDs and occasional outbursts.

And that might necessitate a correction of Obama’s grandstanding, disingenuous remarks to his iftar Muslim audience, in which the president deliberately conflated legal right with ethical and moral sensibility and earned a standing ovation for his distortion.

Perhaps with two or three more disclosures from Imam Rauf’s corpus of speeches, we will hear a stronger walk-back from the president — something analogous to

“The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago.”

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

I should add, abt the NY Times article, one of the writers, Sharaf Mowjood, turns out to be a former lobbyist for American Islamic Relations, which supports the mosque.  So that should tell you even more abt the intent – that one of the writers was very biased, according to this article.

    New York Daily News,
    by Richard Sisk

    Original Article

    8/23/2010

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf used his taxpayer-funded Mideast tour yesterday to praise President Obama’s qualified support for the mosque near Ground Zero. “I am grateful to President Barack Obama and all those who expressed support for our project,” Abdul Rauf said at a dinner for student leaders in the Gulf state of Bahrain. the Gulf Daily News in Bahrain reported. Obama fueled the debate over the mosque with a White House speech defending the right to build the project, but hedged by saying he wouldn’t comment on the “wisdom” of its location….

This question is the topic of this essay, and will include appearances by the Founding Fathers and favorite writer Locke, versus Karl Marx and Mohammad….

Great reporting, Rev. Amy! Thank you.

I have a thought and a question…..The Obama administration and their leftie sycophants have berated and scolded and judged all of us who think the mosque at Ground Zero is a sickening idea.
And yet, if anyone of us says that we believe Obama is Muslim, we are ALSO berated, judged, attacked, etc. So, why is  that??!! I thought the liberals think that Muslims are wonderful citizens who need our support and understanding, right??…Yet, if you conjecture that Obama is a Muslim, they act like you’ve called him the n-word!! Imprimis, A Publication of Hillsdale College  July/Aug 2010, volume 39, number 7/8
Stockholm to Copenhafen    “…For the first time ever the US is participating in the Universal Peri
otic Review–a United Nations initiative in which member countries investigate their own nation’s human rights abuses. The State Dept has held ten “listening sessions” around the US during which an alphabet soup of left-wing groups aired their numerous grievances. These complaints are to be included in a report that the US will submit to the United Nations Human Rights Council. It will be evaluated by such paragons of human rights as Burkina Faso, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, China & Cuba.

When President Obama spoke before the United Nations General Assembly in Sept 2009 he declared that a world order that elevates one country or group of countries over others is bound to fail.  So he’s changing that order. If his domestic policy  priority is the redistribution of wealth, his foreign policy priority seems to be the redistribution of power.”…

I’m probably the only person to comment on the Ambassador Hotel school in California.
This is being distorted and being touted like CA decided to build this fancy school despite the big financial crash. Actually, this has been underway and being financed in one shape or another for years and years.

The problem is that the Ambassador Hotel was considered (like Ground Zero) a historical site because of the assassination of Robert Kennedy. A lot of people felt very strongly about preserving it as-is in his honor.
But it seemed like a waste to have these enormous grounds not being used so it was proposed to incorporate the memorial into a school.
Of course, once you do that, you can’t make it a shack because it would be disrespectful (and people from other states would be horrified), and with California property taxes doing well in the boom years, it all seemed to come together.
Except now it is finished, we are in the middle of this depression.

This is nothing like Bell which is the story of greedy local politicians. This is simply unfortunate timing for a well intentioned building.

Why, because he is the Manchurian Jihadist.  They do not want him outed as a full fledged Muslim.  Yet, he has never been baptised as a Christian.  He believes the sweetest sound in the world is the Call To Prayer.  He cannot find a church anywhere in the DC area even though there are many multi-racial and black churches there.  He did not attend church in Hawaii on Christmas Day or anytime during the “vacation” he and Mobutt spent there over the holidays. It is, as we all know by now, perfectly okay for a Muslim to lie to infidels such as the American citizenry.  As long as he has not been baptised as a Christian he is okay.  If he was not known to them as a true Muslim they would certainly have to have him killed as he was by the Koran born a Muslim.

Then she should shut the hell up.

I think the headscarf situation is a provocation for political purposes. I wonder what mosque she is a member of and what her imam has been telling her to do. Anyone want to bet there is a connection to the imam trying to set up the Ground Zero mosque in NYC??

Hi y’all. Been a while since I’ve been here. Used to hang around during the primaries and pres elections. The oldies may still remember me. :-D Nowadays, too busy to comment but always check on NQ atleast once a week. A lot happening with this crazy GZM.

  • Ferd Premium Saltine Berfle

I remember you, benny. Do continue to come back and perhaps make a comment once in a while.

  • benny

Hey ferd, good to see you. Love your comments on NQ. Especially when you beat up the trolls. You have made me lol many a time.

Just want to weigh in on this GZM. I’ve been following this story for sometime now. For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been working in an asian country. Just saw an article today by a powerful political commentator out here. He brings up new questions about this so called mosque. And since hes no crazy right winger or bigot, just presents the facts. Excerpts:

“While these issues have been commented upon, insufficient space has been devoted to the selected name for the mosque and cultural centre proposed to be built two blocks from the site of the World Trade Centre. Being promoted by a Muslim group called the Cordoba Initiative, the building was initially given the working title of Cordoba House. It was subsequently clarified that the larger campus would be known as Park51, and Cordoba House would instead be the flagship “centre for multi-faith dialogue and engagement” within Park51.”

“What is the significance of the name? Cordoba is a city in southern Spain. Between the 8th and 11th centuries, it was the capital of Al Andalus, as the Arabs knew the Iberian Peninsula, and seat of the strongest Moorish kingdom in Spain.”

“Jews and Christians paid a poll tax. The Great Mosque of Cordoba was an architectural marvel, but constructed on the ruins of an ancient church. Eulogius, the Bishop of Cordoba, was beheaded and his body thrown to the dogs. Today, he is remembered as a Christian saint.”

“What has all this got to with New York 2010? Frankly, that is the puzzling question. To laypeople in the West, the Moorish rule of Spain was simply occupation and colonisation by an alien people.”

“There is one other disquieting note. The re-conquest of Al Andalus is one of the stated goals of al-Qaeda and among the reasons it says it executed the 9/11 attacks. For both an Islamist terror group and an Islam-West peace mission to claim inspiration from the same medieval symbol of Islamic triumphalism is decidedly curious. It doesn’t help perceptions of contemporary Islamic (or Arab) religio-political leaderships being over-obsessed with the past and unmindful of 21st century concerns. It is one thing to be insensitive; it is quite another to not even realise you are being insensitive.

Daisy Khan doesn’t speak for any woman with one tiny bit of self-respect. Islam does not allow women equal rights. I admit to loathing the very idea of a “religion” that makes chattels out of women.

They have a right to build where they want to build providing all laws and regulations are followed. The women that belong to that “religion” have a right to allow themselves to be subjugated to their male/masters. And I have the right to think them unworthy of the American citizenship that so many fought and died to make something very special. Women in this country fought and suffered for the rights they have. And we have yet to achieve our full measure of equality.

The likes of Daisy Khan make me sick. The same women that were appalled at Sarah Palin being a “conservative” don’t seem to have a bit of trouble fawning over and supporting these barbarians who have made the subjegation of women a large part of their religion. They see nothing wrong in our being appalled that they would build their temple, where women are not allowed in the front door to worship beside me, at our gates.

We are not the bigots in this issue, the left that hates conservatives and Christians are.

Michelle Obama made dusk visit to Great Mosque of Granada during Spanish trip

Other than referring to it in passing,  there has been no media coverage about Michelle Obama’s dusk visit to the Great Mosque at Granada.  Prayer times at the mosque on Aug. 5 were 6:09 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
While Michelle Obama was roundly criticized as a spendthrift American Marie Antoinette during her visit to Spain, was she on official Mosque business for her husband?
Were messages exchanged between Michelle Obama and the principals of the Great Mosque at Granada on August 5, 2010?

Why is Rauf’s wife telling the American people that this argument about where the mosque is placed is really all about hating muslims while her husband, who is making the “mosque world tour ’10″ (on taxpayer’s dime) is supposedly trying to build bridges?  It is said that she will be joining him at some point on this junket (also at taxpayer’s expense).  So, which message will the muslim world be hearing?  His or hers?  This is just one account from American Thinker:

“”We are deeply concerned, because this is like a metastasized antisemitism,” said Daisy Khan, who is spearheading the project with her husband, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf. “It’s beyond Islamophobia. It’s hate of Muslims.”
Ms. Khan, appearing on ABC News’s “This Week” on Sunday, vowed to push ahead with plans to build a 15-story complex two blocks from the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in lower Manhattan, saying there was “too much at stake.”

Before heading to work I watch the first segment of MSNBC Morning Joe and the rest is DVR. Ever single show begins and ends with a warped single-minded view of the Ground Zero mosque situation.

The NBC “news” organization is committed to single strategy of creating a red herring of religious freedom and intentionally ignoring all other issues.

Not one has this show talked about the many statements by this Iman. Instead they create this distorted image of him as a moderate Muslim. He is anything but that. Not once have they discussed how this mosque is being funded. Not once have they asked why it must be in that location since no Muslims live there. Not once have they spoken to the families who lost loved ones and oppose this mosque to ask why they oppose its location. And not once have they focused on the religious freedom of the people who did lose loved one and whose remains were never found – making the blocks srrounding Ground Zero their final resting place.

Religious freedom does have its limits. An Iman cannot preach sedition or plan attacks inside a mosque as has been done before in the New York metro area. Religious freedom also includes showing tolerance towards others which this Iman has never shown and instead demands tolerance – just like Sharia laws commands.

Armymom:  Well, this is really going to p*** you off!  The official name of the YMCA is now just “The Y”.  If you google “YMCA”, the third hit is their site with this intro:  “The YMCA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body …”
However, if you go to the site, you cannot find this information.  Instead what you see is something that looks and feels like ACORN’s global community social programming propaganda.  Bait and switch?  Boy, I don’t know.  The “Y” is where we all took our first swimming lessons, right?

Rep. Paul’s remarks about property rights remind me of the days about 25 years ago when I flirted with the Libertarian Party.  Libertarians oppose zoning per se.  Give that some thought and consider the implications for neighborhoods, homeowners, etc., if there were no zoning laws.

While I sometimes agree with him about war issues, I think he’s being dogmatic about property rights when it comes to the monumentally-proportioned mosque/cultural center near GZ.

  • oowawa

I tried writing a version of these thoughts yesterday, but it came out sounding too pedantic, so I deleted it.

This “mosque,” for everybody concerned is a symbolic place.  I define “symbol” as a thing that has become charged with feelings, thoughts, and associations of all sorts.  A sentimental object, a family bible for instance, is such a symbol, as is the American flag and the swastika.  This situation is a war over “symbols,” in the way I have defined it.  I think we need to know that various factions perceive the symbolism of this event differently, because the associations they see in these places are different.

1–First of all, everybody recognizes that we have an existing symbolic place whose significance can not be denied: the site of the destroyed twin towers.  For most, it is a site that constellates grief and anger.  For some militant jihadists, it is a site that says things like “Down with the Great Satan,” “God is great,” “Islam will prevail,” and “We won a Big One for Allah, infidel scum!”

2–The proposed new “Cordoba” mosque or celebration point or whatever, will infringe upon the “sacred space” of the existing symbolic site, and will by its proximity modify the focus of energy on that place.  This new architectural symbol will constellate very different feelings for different groups.

3–I’ll concede that there are Moslems who want the wounds created by 9-11 to go away, and for these the Cordoba House may focus feelings of universal brotherhood and conciliation.  For many other Moslems, however, the mosque will be a Victory Shrine mocking the destroyed twin towers, and the feelings focussed will be celebratory and evil.

4–For those who grieve over national and personal losses on 9-11, the mosque will focus feelings of continued hatred of Islam extremists and possibly towards Islam in general.  The site will also constellate resentment towards the governing powers who allowed such a pollution of Ground Zero.

5–There are liberal factions who will see the mosque as a symbol, a focussing point, of their own magnanimity and tolerance–a structure that sings Kumbaya and testifies to their own feelings of universal all-embracing brotherhood and a celebration of how tolerant and forgiving we are as a people . . .

6–In any case, it can hardly be argued that the mosque is an attempt to modify the symbolic meaning of an existing symbol, the site of the twin towers, with another architectural symbol that has contradictory associations to a whole lot of people.  We are contesting the impact that a proposed symbol will have on an existing emotionally charged symbol.  It is much more than a zoning issue . . . We are arguing the meaning of symbols . . .

IMHO, building the mosque in that location is a big symbolic mistake.

Ron Paul is a pure libertarian who is consistent in his belief that a person is free to do whatever they wish as long as it is not a crime. So if a neighbor walked their dog everyday and made on your front lawn they were free to do so since it does not break any laws.

Ron Paul is also opposed to all foreign wars and interventions which leads to a belief that we should not be getting involved in Middle East affairs at all which means we should have no conflict with Muslim organizations overseas. He is a true isolationist.

The immigrationis reform and this issue is bringing forth a common ground on which most Americans, no matter the politics, can stand. This is a good thing, imo.

  • Yttik

Speaking of symbolism, yesterday on the news I watched a truck go through with some steel beams from 911. They brought them here all the way to the west coast to use in building a memorial to the 911 victims. What was impressive was the depth of emotion people showed, they were lining the streets and bridges, crying, waving flags. People lined up just to put their hands on the steel and to say prayers. 911 is a hugely emotional issue and to this day it remains unresolved, people have not had closure, the wounds are still fresh.

Anyway, it’s in really bad taste for people to try and build a mosque at that location. This isn’t about rights or freedom, it’s about having some respect for the pain of others. And it’s also really disrespectful to try and dismiss people as racist and bigots, simply because they want their grief to be acknowledged and respected.

I agree that perhaps the intentions were good–but EWard’s suggestion that we all start facing reality is also important.  But I would disagree that it’s only teachers who make a difference.  While we definitely need to have more teachers who are intent on teaching and not just on earning a paycheck and retirement, and who know and love their subjects, it’s a combination of lots of things:  an economy that clearly gives proof to kids that having an education is important for their futures; parents who teach about the self-respect one acqures by KNOWING things and by making use to the fullest of of their abilitities that other creatures don’t have; and a combination of families, neighbors, businesses, government agencies, etc. that firmly expects punishment to be meted out to children who vandalize schools, disrupt others’ education, and generally act like jerks.

I do hope the memory of RFK is powerful enough to keep a building this costly from becoming something that is a waste of time and effort for those who intended only good.

When I advised the school newspaper in our district of 20 high schools–all with pretty large student populations (1,000 to 1,500 avaerage), one of my reporters happened to overhear our head custodian griping about the cost of having to clean up some graffiti that was discovered in the athletic hall.  She used that as her story suggestion when we were planning the next issue.

When he agreed to talk with her, it opened a can of worms.  The principal really didn’t want us to run with the story, but we did as in our state she didn’t have prior right of approval.  And the student did an amazing job of gathering statistics from all the district high schools–with my help, as the main office tried to deny her the right of access to those figures.  We ran a story that won an award in the state high school journalism conference that showed the costs and provided a breakout for each high school. It was NOT a pretty picture, and we were not anything like Los Angeles.   The thing that upset me was that our district has NICE buildings, nothing like this. $600,000 building  We were mostly middle class, working class.  But the district, rather than actepting some unfavorable publicity about the cost of vandalism and making it known had been trying to keep it under the radar, always just budgetin in large amounts for cleaning it up–as if that is just what happens.

And perhaps it IS just what happens to schools—But it should not be accepted so casually in my opinion.  I used to wish that I could send lots of kids from the U.S. each year to real thrid world countries where being able to attend a school is a major deal for kids.  Our kids are often just too spoiled and don’t realize how spoiled they are.

  • Diana L. C. Hazelut Nut Thin Cracker

Seymour, I didn’t find your comments at all upsetting.  I think they were some of the best on the thread.  I completely understand one’s feelings and frustrations getting the better of you.  But you were absolutely spot on with your comments.

  • EllenD

I get it EWard. I don’t think anyone wanted to see this as a huge expenditure for education (you may remember they had to deal with toxic waste that they found too).
But in LA this is the closest we have to a historical memorial.
If we keep insulting our American heroes memory by not building memorials to them because t is too expensive then we will have nothing.

I quite agree with you about the &%$#@ LA School District which is why I voted for the valley to secede and I will certainly honor your opinion about the other schools.

But as far as I’m concerned  there AREN’T ENOUGH memorials to Americans who made a difference in this country so I’m going to bat for this one.

  • Seymour

Reverend Amy, outstanding material! Your articles are thought provoking to say the least coupled with high density opinion and emotive responses! Outstanding! I don’t remember an issue that generated, as well it should, the dialogue you have received on this that we all learn from. Quality subjects with quality responses and that obviously includes the pros and cons of the subject matter. I don’t get on the site as much as I would like due to work but as you can tell when I do my cup runneth over.

As to the LAUSD 5 billion lbs. Gorilla. This is happening all over California. There is a small town in San Bernardino County called Moreno Valley. They have USD Administrative Offices that are completely off the hook. Hand laid mosaic, exterior columns, grand entry ways, fountains and I mean royalty ornate. I noticed also that they have taken the picture of this building off their website because the torches are beginning to burn bright in this desert city. When is a child’s education going to become the priority here? When are teachers going to begin thinking of their profession in the singular sense of why they became teachers in the first place? 1 in 3 new California teachers will tell you sure its the kids education but, it’s the salary, overtime plus benefits that attracted them and I cant blame them if our State continues to offer such employment packages. I don’t see where this is paying off for the kids or the taxpayer in any way and the simple truth is, it isn’t and everyone here and from all states have already and will continue to bail this beautiful but now miserable State out of bad policy but know this, the policy will not change when that policy is rewarded as in this last $26 billion bailout. I can’t believe people don’t see this as the temporary panacea it is as apposed to a needed correction in course! The wooden school houses I attended growing up sufficed very nicely and those that wanted the education got it. I could have cared less if snuck a cigarette on a rock or a polished marble floor LOL.

Also, if parents actually reviewed the book curriculum these kids are learning from there would be hell to pay excuse my vernacular. I knew growing up a lot of my generation was lazy by way of the greatest generation wanting us all to have what they didn’t’ which was passed down compounding to the next generations. Parents just don’t take the time to even peruse the books their kids are learning from but as a foster parent Uncle, I have and it makes my blood boil.

    Peace…….Seymour

Yes, RRRA – it ended up over the top because of cleanup of toxic waste and the subsequent dive in the ecomony.
But it is part of our history. At least they preserved it. LA would have been forever tarred if they had torn it down and made the site a condo.

I don’t think there are enough American monuments and memorials – especially now. How the heck is the World Trade Center memorial doing BTW?

  • ~~JustMe~~

You are correct Diana; Seymour’s comments covered everything we see happening today! The great thing here at NQ, we can learn so much from each other if we are prepared to look, listen and learn! If by doing this many more wake up from their “O” infused stupor can only be good for the stability in the U.S.A!

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Thanks so much, Seymour.  I enjoy your comments, too.

Good grief abt the other venues there.  That is just mind boggling.

I appreciate EllenD’s concerns abt memorials to Robert Kennedy, and other good people, but it still seems like a rather extravagant gesture for someone who stood for human rights and justice, like the center that bears his name.

Not that I don’t think memorials shouldn’t be built – of course they should, but common sense is an important component as well, especially when one wants to honor how the man lived his life.

  • bamaLV

daisy khan called those of us opposed to the mosque “islamaphobes”  how many crimes were committed on muslims after 9/11?  or after fort hood? or after any of the other atrocities muslims have committed on americans?. none that i know of.  im getting sick and tired of being called names by those who have committed crimes against humanity (and that includes our faux president.).if they are such tolerant people, then why cant they be tolerant of the feelings of most americans? so they need a place to “worship”? well there are over 100 mosques in ny. let them go there.

  • bamaLV

well maybe we should give them just a small dose of their own medicine. at the next anti- mosque rally everyone should bring a picture of what they think mohammed looks like . the muslims hate that.     also pictures of those “72 virgins” they think they will meet in whatever they call heaven. maybe a picture of 72 ugly men.  im sure folks can come up with some good ideas of their own.  what can the muslims do…put out a fatwah on all americans?  oops sorry they have already done that.

  • bamaLV

i absolutely agree.   if obama is a muslim (and i truly believe he is) then why is he ashamed to admit it.? he has slipped up on numerous occasions about his being a muslim.  if they are such wonderful peace loving  people, why would he be so loathe to admit it?

did he hold a WH dinner for jews during passover or hanakaH ?  or for christians during easter or christmas? or for the holidays for budhists, protestants, or any other religion?   i dont think so.  he cancelled the National  day of prayer.    had pictures or statues of   jesus covered over at  some of his speeches and he rarely has the american flag behind him when he speaks. . he only kow tows to  muslims. and people wonder why so many think he’s a closet muslim?

R3A:  I was being too rhetorical in my question, I think.  What Khan is saying goes to the heart of the questions unasked of her Imam husband.  One has to imagine that, at the very least, they talk on the phone from time-to-time.  I don’t think her comments about muslim-hating Americans and the laying down of the mosque builder’s PR strategy was Khan going rogue.  I believe this is another brick in the wall to getting their mosque there despite the sincere objections of reasonable people AND their means of hijacking the message to make any objections appear unreasonable.   All objections — whether over the GZM or anything the Dems have cooked up — are being shouted over by the media.  It feels like a house of mirrors, psychotic.

I was just reading this morning about another site, the Christian Chautauqua Institution in western New York.  This article has an oppositional bias, but the other articles I read on it are just as biased in its support.  I guess it’s hard to not have an opinion either way.

What I am curious about is the timing of these and other mosque building plans going into 2011, the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  Is it tinfoil hat time or is there something to the rush for the appearance of Islamist expansion in the west in time for the anniversary?

i knew there was more to her trip to spain this summer. was she bringing some of those billions her husband hasnt spent yet, to his muslim friends to pay for this  mosque , so we would think it came from overseas when its actually american taxpayers money that will be paying for it?  this seems just like something the obamas would do.

daisy khan should be careful what she says lest it become a  self fullfilling profacy.  when we start rounding up the muslims and sending them to death camps..then and only then can she compare it to anti-semitism.  until then she needs to shut her mouth.  im goddamned tired of being called names  by the true bigots.  its been overplayed and needs to  stop.

i dont know much about the muslim religion but im curious.  do they believe in redistrbution of wealth? (or does this not apply to muslims)  will they also be forced to buy health insurance or pay a fine?   whats the crime rate in muslim communities?  so i dont know much about their religion but i do know that though not all muslims are murderers, all the murderers on 9/11 were muslims.  AND LETS NEVER FORGET HOW THEY DANCED AND CHEERED IN THE STREETS ON 9/11!!

  • FLDemFem

I had an idea today. Not the only one, but a fairly good one on how to stop the mosque. How about the 9/11 families sue the Cordoba project, and the imam personally, for intentional infliction of emotional distress. If people can get big payouts for getting hassled at work, then why wouldn’t people whose family members had been slaughtered by these people’s co-religionists get one. I think suing for $200 million would be good. Let’s see if the imam can raise the money in the Middle East for the payout as easily as he can raise the money for the mosque. I wouldn’t even mind the State Dept. funding his travel for that purpose.

I am not a fan of RFK.  However, I remember RFK was all about helping the poor and oppressed.  Bankrupting a school district to build a memorial in his name sends a horrible message not only to his supporters but the people of Los Angeles.

This memorial while built with the best intentions has become symbolic of how school districts are misusing public funds.  It’s not only happening in Los Angeles but all over the nation.

bamaLV, imagine what would have happened to Christians in a Muslim country had an extremist group of Christians killed that many Muslims through an act of terrorism. They would have been slaughtered out of hand. With the local Muslim government cheering them on, probably. And there is a mosque within two blocks of the proposed site of the Ground Zero mosque. Not too far to walk, even in NYC.

NEW YORK – Supporters of a Greek Orthodox church destroyed on Sept. 11 say officials willing to speak out about a planned community center and mosque near ground zero have been silent on efforts to get the church rebuilt. But the World Trade Center site’s owner says a deal to help rebuild St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was offered and rejected, after years of negotiations, over money and other issues.Though the projects are not related, supporters — including George Pataki, New York’s governor at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks — have questioned why public officials have not addressed….

Over the recent Fourth of July weekend, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) interviewed attendees of the 47th annual Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) convention about their experiences in dealing with ”Islamophobia.” Shortly afterwards, on July 6, CAIR called on the FBI to investigate an act of arson at a Georgia mosque, saying that hate crimes were increasing because of a ”vocal minority in our society promoting anti-Muslim bigotry.” The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) referred to it as one of the ”incidents of Islamophobia [that] are on the rise in this country.” However, police later arrested a….

We should coin a new phrase, “offensive victimhood,” for a trait which actually began 1,400 years ago. The first Islamic terror attack occurred in 623 when Muhammad’s raiders attacked a Quraysh caravan at Nakhlah during a sacred month when such raids were prohibited. Booty and hostages were captured, and one Quraysh was killed. After demurring over this serious violation of local custom, Muhammad finally claimed the stolen goods and ransom money, declaring, “They ask you about the sacred month. Say: ‘To fight in this month is a grave offence; but to debar others from the path of Allah, to deny Him, and to expel His worshippers from the Holy Mosque, is far more grave in His sight. Idolatry is worse than carnage.’ ” (Surah 2:217) Of course, the men in the caravan had done nothing to oppose Islam, Muhammad, or his followers. The victimhood was just an excuse for their aggression. This repeats with almost every terror attack right up to today. (See Ibn Ishaq, page 287 and al-Tabari, Vol. VII, pages 18-23) ”

If American hijackers had bombed Saudi Arabia, would Chrisitians be allowed to build a church near the attack?  Others have said this before but this issue is about dehumanizing and delegitimizing our voices to subvert to an all powerful government while we lose our individual liberties.

This will be short and to the point. Of course there should be no mosque built in New York City near the site we call simply Ground Zero — the place where once stood two towering buildings filled with life and people and commerce. All disappeared at the hands of some fanatically driven Muslims nine years ago and now it’s just an empty place called Ground Zero. WH: No further comment

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — The White House says President Barack Obama will have no further comment on the mosque near Ground Zero in New York and the administration will not get involved in talks about relocating the controversial facility. Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton was asked about the issue Tuesday at a White House press briefing. He replied, “No, and no” to the questions of whether Obama would weigh in further, or whether the White House would have a role in discussions about moving the mosque.

“this issue is about dehumanizing and delegitimizing our voices to subvert to an all powerful government while we lose our individual liberties”

Extremely well said. At its very core this country was founded on a very simple principle. Every founder believed that the greatest danger to us was a stronger and stronger central government. The reason is that they believed in self-reliance and self-determination. The more power a government attains the less freedom individuals have.

For whatever reason the majority of the press have strongly believed in a strong central government as do liberals. They have no historical success to support their stance so they distort the truth, deny information, and even invent myths.

If you are Muslim you can opt out of the Obamacare health care reform laws with no penaltiesMarch 26th, 2010 http://www.examiner.com

Isn’t this nice. If you are of the Muslim religion, you don’t have to give all the new Obamacare healthcare reform regulations and penalties another thought. Because the concept of being compelled to participate in such a healthcare program offends Islamic sensibilities, Muslims are specifically exempt.

As a matter of fact if you are Amish, American Indian or a Chistian Scientist you do not need to participate or pay the taxes associated with healthcare reform. That means not having to be forced to buy healthcare insurance, not paying the taxes or the penalties if you don’t get it. Nice!

Here is what the regulations say:

     EXEMPTIONS FROM INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS.

—In the case of an individual who is seeking an exemption certificate under section 1311(d)(4)(H) from any requirement or penalty imposed by section 5000A, the following information:

In the case of an individual seeking exemption based on the individual’s status as a

member of an exempt religious sect or division, as a member of a health care sharing ministry, as an Indian,

or as an individual eligible for a hardship exemption, such information as the Secretary shall prescribe.”

    Senate Bill, H.R. 3590, pages 273-274

There are several reasons why an individual could claim exemption, being a member of a religion that does not believe in insurance is one of them. Islam is one of those religions. Muslims believe that health insurance is “haraam”, or forbidden; because they liken the ambiguity and probability of insurance to gambling. This belief excludes them from any of the requirements, mandates, or penalties set forth in the bill. More…

This means that if you are Christian and abortion is against your religion tough luck.

If you are Jewish tough luck as well.

We wonder why these certain groups get a free ride. We also wonder why the largest religious block in North and South America the Christians are discriminated against like this. Very odd indeed.

There is a lot of food for thought here and a lot of ways to object to this healthcare bill isn’t there.

This year, the Obama administration will spend nearly $6 million to restore 63 historic and cultural sites, including mosques and minarets, in 55 nations, according to State Department documents. (Snip) The contributions include $76,135 for the 16th century Grand Mosque in Tongxin, China, and $67,500 for the 18th century Golden Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan. An additional $62,169 will be spent on restoring a 19th century
