Future President?

You may think we are devolving back to 2006 – 08 but pay close attention here. We go a little further back – The 1990s. We start with a young state senator who has a friendly relationship with a businessman who has funding ties in the Middle East. As state senator this aspiring politician arranges tax dollars to go to this businessman’s low income housing business. The properties are purchased but, instead of spending the rest of the tax money on fixing the dilapidated buildings, our money is parlayed and it brings the businessman into higher political circles. No. This is not what you think.

The businessman and his wife become known, by their tenants, however as slumlords. This slumlord cheers the state senator all the way to the U.S. Senate and now the slumlord is a subject drawing a lot of attention. If you are thinking Rezko and Obama then you are in the wrong part of the country.

The U.S. Senator in question is Bob Menendez from Union City, New Jersey. The slumlords? None other than Ground Zero Mosque Mastermind Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and his wife Daisy Khan. It appears that Sen. Menendez has accumulated the prerequisite background associations to be declared a Future President.

Location of the properties? Just across the river in New Jersey.

Excerpt from the NY Post: Mosque ‘slumlord’
NJ tenants rage at G. Zero imam.

Barillas ( a tenant ) said that bedbugs plague the building — but that when she tried to get building managers to respond, they claimed they didn’t have the money to hire an exterminator. Tenant Vilma Then chided Rauf as greedy. “All he likes is money,” she said. “Nothing ever gets fixed. I complain to the super, and all he says is that he has the same problem.”

Vilma Then said she lived at Rauf’s building around the corner until a fire forced her to move to 2206 Central Ave. She said her current situation is similar to her old digs, where she had a stove that was more like “a roach den.” She also complained that Rauf’s wife, Daisy Khan — who has been the imam’s spokesperson while he is touring overseas — “listens to what you have to say and writes things down and leaves — and nothing gets done.” “She gives nothing but false promises,” the resident said.

A much closer look at the Imam’s finances and dealings with NJ political figures is well covered the The Record newspaper of Hackensack:

Imam Feisal A. Rauf won support for his Hudson County projects from powerful politicians, among them Robert C. Janiszewski, the disgraced former county executive. He also was awarded grants from Union City when U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez was mayor. (In NJ you can be a mayor and in the state legislature at the same time.)

Union City’s Community Development Agency awarded three grants, totaling $384,000. Three years later, two of those buildings on Bergenline Avenue also received nearly $1.3 million in construction loans from Hudson County’s affordable-housing trust fund and $630,900 from the state with the proviso that the units be rented at “affordable” rates through 2017.

Rauf met with Menendez in late 1991 before applying for the state funds, and months later made a pitch to the mayor for $80,000 in city funds to help carry him until the loans came through, documents show.

And this zinger from a local person interviewed by Jewish World Review: Tenants don’t see imam as ‘healer’

“He can’t even repair the bells in the hallway. He doesn’t take care of his properties. But he’s going to take care of a mosque?”

Rezko. The Imam. Are there other “businessmen” with Middle Eastern ties lurking behind rising political establishments and officeholders in other cities and states around the U.S.? Pay attention to the little details and look closely into the background of candidate supporters. As if you – a concerned citizen – don’t already have enough to ponder about.

  • EllenD

I think I posted the rap sheet on the developer too. Great. Just great.

  • Diana

Thank you for this report. It shows the character of the man– and it isn’t good. It backs the moderate Muslims who spoke out against the proposed mosque site– those who said this man was causing trouble purposefully. I have respect for those moderate Muslims who spoke for being compassionate and respectful of those affected by the 911 tragedy. This man is causing untold damage for relations between Muslims who live all over the world and in America and the rest of the American population. The man is a low life.

  • felizarte

This is so sickening.  The country is more at risk than we ever thought.

  • Eastan McNeal

Yes. Diana.  If he shows this little respect for the hard working American tenants living in his buildings, then you may question his motives and feelings in all of his other dealings.  Slumlords are lowlife – period.

The endless pursuit of power and money is going to be our ultimate undoing. There certainly are more things to life than American’s seemingly constant preoccupation with avarice of the most malignant kind and power, in all its corrupt facets. Beck’s rally is making more and more sense now, come to think of it.

Ethics and morality have taken a backseat to if-it-feels-good-do-it sort of mentality that undermines civilization but is quite good at creating all sorts of division imaginable. I do believe the warning signs are there and we ignore them at our peril.

  • EllenD

Yes, Diana. How many of us would go to a church to be preached to by a Slum Landlord?

  • Eastan McNeal

Ferd.  Ethics and morality.  Right.  I can see a politician thinking:  Um.  I don’t want to ask where he got his seed money, but he will take me to diner and introduce me to other fundraisers and, if his project takes off, I can tell the voters I helped bring affordable housing to the area.  Never:  “Is this honestly a good use of taxpayer money?”

  • Patience

Whoa.  Some story.  Thanks for this Eastan.

Would it be naive of me to ask why the MSM hasn’t reported this in a big way?

  • Eastan McNeal

Does not fit their narative, Patience.  The only reason to oppose the Imam is to share our bigotted views.  He is perfect.  We are small minded and flawed for asking questions.

  • Patience

Hmmm.  Nice guy.  Thanks for this Ellen.

  • Eastan McNeal

    We type poorly, too.  Bigoted.

OMG talk about mind-blowing. UGH! It is like a re run of Rezko does this madness ever end!  Will Imam Feisal A. Rauf be sizing out the next POTUS than runs in 2012 too? I do not feel too good, it’s just too much to read.

  • Talk2ThePaw

It was devulged today that the developer owes over $225,000 in back taxes on the proposed mosque property.  But I am going out on a limb here saying that these taxes will be miracuously paid as soon as Rauf returns from his “state department tour of peace” or should I say his taxpayer funded fund raising adventure.

It was also said that this owing of back taxes violates the lease agreement he has with ConEd on this property.  And now NY’s comptroller is saying that he wants to help them with a tax funded no interest loan.  How deep are the pols involved in this mess?  If you or I were $225,000 behind in taxes you can be certain that ConEd would have taken legal measures already to void the lease.  And none of us with this man’s financials would be given a tax free loan from the city.

Now if someone has the time, we need to know how many fines were leveled at the slumload for not bringing the property up to code while it is or was being rented out. That will cost some $ as well, I can imagine there may be a trail of either unpaid fines, or fines dismissed. Anyone on that same city council approving the mosque involved in overseeing keeping buildings up to code to prevent tenants from living in conditions like these? Just a though; you know there is more than one cockroach involved. Should be public record for New Yorkers.

“Does the Mayor’s unshakable support have anything to do with The Bloomberg (company) becoming a ‘single provider of information that caters to the Islamic business market’? The Bloomberg five-year business plan calls for an Islamic finance portal via a Bloomberg hub at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).”

  • Onofre’s arm

Ferd you said a mouthful. Indeed self imposed morality is at the heart of a smoothly functioning America, and it was this individual pursuit of high ethics that was the main thrust of the Beck rally.

Around ten years ago there was an excellent article in “National Review” that made the fascinating point that there is a profound difference between Muslims and Christians. Muslims have a “shame” based culture, while Jews/Christians/and Westerners in general have a “guilt” based culture. Guilt, or a self conscience is an internal guide for most of us that generally directs our actions toward honesty, decency, and socially acceptable behavior. Even if we never get caught, most of us would be haunted with guilt if we did something dishonest or hurtful to our neighbors. Muslims, on the other hand, quite often engage in activities and behaviors that we consider to be unethical and hurtful, but if they get away with it, no problem. If they get caught or if they are brought down by their actions, then they become fair targets for shame. This explains why most Iraqis were not willing to topple Saddam. They knew he was a murdering scoundrel, and they realized that he rose to power through violent activities, BUT HE GOT AWAY WITH IT! HE WAS THE TOP DOG! Even though a majority of Iraqis may have despised Saddam, their cultural proclivities compelled them to somewhat admire Saddam for his ability to assume power, regardless of how brutal his methods were that got him there. “Yep, he’s an asshole, but you gotta hand it to him, he’s a successful asshole!”

This could help to explain the Raufs and Rezkos of the world. They have little sense of moral responsibility to provide decent living conditions for their tenants, they feel no guilt for the suffering they’ve caused, just so long as they can consider themselves to be wealthy and successful. It also explains much about Obama.

I wish I could find that article, maybe Breeze could work her forensic wonders.

  • Patience

As a proudly-fastidious landlady and former social worker, I have particular and intense disdain for slumlords.  To add insult to injury, it’s almost always the case that they benefit from one or more types of public funds, just as this imam has.

Where is the f-ing oversight?  I know from my days working with the poor that the government employs inspectors (probably lots of them) to check out properties that house Sec. 8 and other welfare recipients.  Yet some of the most egregiously offensive slumlords get away with abject neglect year after year after year.  They get quite wealthy in the process.

This proved to me a long time ago that government oversight is corrupt.

In addition, that an imam or any clergyman would take such advantage of poor people is absolutely despicable.  More and more, it seems this guy is simply on the take.

    Noogan,

I spent the entire day Sunday reading and studying Sharia Law from 2 different sources.

Not only is this whole mosque idea an insult to the families of 9/11. What I learned on Sunday is that Sharia Law is like the re-incarnation of Atilla the Hun and Kubla Khan and the invasions of the Barbarians.

WE did not allow the Mormons to practice bigamy, child marriages. Nor does USA law allow the buying and selling of woman as if they are cattle. I will not even get into the violence of Sharia.

I have no problem with the means Muslims use for prayer posturing, nor thheir fasting holidays. I am absolutely appalled by the complete horror of Shareia Law, which is as much a part of their so called “religion” as their proscribed prayer times.

Louisiana already has a law on their books prohibiting Sharia Law, and Oklahoma has a ballot question to prohibit Shaira there on their Novemeber ballot.

What is the reason for your comment, Nellie. You clearly didn’t even read the link I posted, or you’d know I didn’t say anything about Muslims. The link I posted was to something else. I’ve never supported Sharia; but I know that Sharia should not be conflated with every Muslim, too. Blanket presumptions about an entire religion are irrational stereotyping.

Do you love the violence of Christianity and Judaism, Nellie? Just asking, because the Old Testament is full of it. Some Jewish tracts which have recently been the source of an uproar in Israel advocate killing non-Jews and secular Jews. So, now, you’ve studied Sharia Law. Good for you.

But now you’ve somehow concluded all Muslims want to impose it, over and above our own Constitution. Not gonna happen. Most Muslims live here because they don’t want to live under Sharia!

You ought to be worried about the Constitution instead of “Sharia.” Both political parties in this country are MORE of a danger to you than Muslims.

There are extremists in other religions. Here’s a good example:

  • Noogan
  • Noogan

Nellie, I have to laugh at this comment. I don’t even know why you posted it, since I didn’t say anything about Muslims; the link I posted has nothing to do with Muslims or Sharia.

Most Muslims live here because they don’t want to live under Sharia. If Louisiana has passed laws prohibiting Sharia, good for them. Oklahoma, too.

But, the problem in this country isn’t Sharia; it’s the fact that successive governments/political parties/and Presidents and Congresses, have eroded our Constitution.

You should be appalled by Sharia Law. I am too. But I’m appalled as well at people who think all Muslims want Sharia; it simply isn’t true.

There are extremists in every religion, Nellie. To me, Evangelical Christians are pretty damn extreme. And, so are these Jewish Rabbis:

    Conversely, there are moderate Muslims:

The flimsiness of the Park51 Islamic center, even by the flimflam standards of New York real estate deals, has (reasonably) taken a back seat to the political and constitutional issues around the project.
Still, as Maggie and I wrote, it’s worth keeping an eye on the fact that this thing seems very unlikely to be built for the most mundane of reasons, and Asra Nomani today has some insight into the communal politics:
After tracking Sharif’s finances and talking to acquaintances about his rough-and-tumble business style, I now don’t think the mosque will be built at the location staked out near ground zero. According to people familiar with the mosque project, Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf and his wife, Daisy Khan, a community leader, were blindsided by the revelations about Sharif, making a partnership unlikely. Moreover, Sharif’s domineering personality troubles them because it doesn’t fit into the slow, methodical and even boring work of building a nonprofit.
I expect that Rauf and Khan will gracefully bow out of this project near ground zero, lead an interfaith community effort to build an Islamic center elsewhere and welcome Sharif and his family in the congregation with open arms. To me, that’s the best solution out of this political — and now PR — debacle. I’m also certain that somewhere in there the businessman in Sharif will see a profit.
