Barack Obama’s Mission Accomplished Moment

Who knew? George W. Bush and Barack Obama apparently are twin brothers. Bush played politics with Iraq and Barack, not to be outdone, is following suit. We all remember the flight-suit clad George Bush strutting around the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln just before he proclaimed “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” in Iraq. There was no reason other than politics to do that speech. At the time the Democrats were shitting themselves. Bush looked and acted the role of Commander in Chief. The Dems were certain that the Republicans would trot out those manly images of George W. Bush during the 2004 election. They did not understand that the actual failure to accomplish the mission in Iraq left intact Sunni and Shia insurgents who were not content to go quietly into that sweet night. Hell no! They were going to fight. And fight they did.

We come now to Barack Obama. Although the White House insists this is not a “Mission Accomplished” moment, there is no other possible interpretation. Once Barack completes his speech tonight he will take full ownership of Iraq. This is likely to be seen with the benefit of hindsight as one of the dumbest moves of the Obama Presidency. Why?

Tonight’s event is all about domestic politics and does nothing to alter the reality on the ground in Iraq. We still have more than 50,000 troops on the ground. We can pretend that they are not soldiers. Hell, we can call them clowns and imagine that they are servicing birthday parties as testosterone ladened entertainers. While we are at it we can also delude ourselves into believing that farts smell like roses. But pretending, imagining and fantasizing does not change reality. George W. Bush pretended, at least for a while, there was no such thing as an insurgency in Iraq. Anyone care to comment on how that little fantasy turned out?

So now Barack creates a new fantasy–the non-combat soldiers. How long will he be able to keep that boatload of crap floating? Six months from now U.S. soldier will still be dying from attacks in Iraq. They only way those attacks will cease is when every single U.S. soldier or marine is finally withdrawn from Iraq. But can we really withdraw forces in a year if the sectarian violence is escalating and Iran comes to the aid of the Shia majority? The most likely scenario in my view is that we will scamper out of Iraq as Iran spreads its visible influence in Iraq. This will foster the world perception of the United States as weak. Last time the Iranians thoroughly humiliated an American President there was a guy by the name of Jimmy Carter wandering the halls of the White House. Looks like Barack is well on his way to surpassing the lowlights of Carter. Go get ‘em kid.

With the economy imploding (we’re on the eve of another collapse that is likely to dwarf the events of September 2008) Barack has nothing better to do then do an Oval office speech that changes nothing on the ground in Iraq. His speech will not compel nor inspire the Iraqis to name a new government. The Iraqis have squandered five months, why not just keep on doing nothing? His speech will not persuade the Sunni terrorists to lay down their weapons and end all attacks. Nope!! Oh, and his speech will not convince the IRANIANS to withdraw their intelligence officers that are posted throughout Iraq.

Barack might as well put on a codpiece and strut around tonight in a pilots garb. His speech will win him the same kind of long term adulation that George W. Bush achieved with his ill-conceived speech on the Abraham Lincoln. The image of that speech came to haunt George W. The same is likely to happen to Barack Obama.

I don’t know who first uttered the advice, “Declare victory and get out,” but that appears to be the present strategy.  The force left behind are relabeled as “non-combatants.”  That Thee One guy, he sure is clever!

I don’t know who first uttered the advice, “Declare victory and get out,” but that appears to be the present strategy.  The force left behind are relabeled as “non-combatants,” so they don’t count.  That Thee One guy, he sure is clever!

Now you know, oowawa, you can’t have 85K guys coming home looking for jobs now, can you?

  • Retired

I have a solution.  Since Afghanistan has produced a recomendation for a “Heroic Restraint” medal, perhaps this phase of the Iraq War could spawn an “Iraq Noncombatant Service” award.  The Latin inscription on this award should be “Ego eram illic quoque.”

  • Tony Stark

Obama is really George Bush Sr’s secret love child and long lost brother to Dubya, which is why we are all in an ever deepening sinkhole adjacent to a septic tank. The American people chose disregard Hillary’s advice when she said that it took a Clinton to clean up after a Bush, and by golly, she was right!

    Great suggestions.

There must be something in the DC water.  A victory speech on Iraq makes as much sense as Biden, Dean and Brazilla [I'm listening to her now], insisting that Dems will retain the House and Senate.  Despite all the legislative “victories” Obama has patted himself on the back for [because we all know how people just lo-o-ove the healthcare reform/deform bill], there’s not a whole lot POTUS can crow about from the Oval Office.

He’s obviously not willing to touch the economy or the scourge of joblessness with a ten foot pole.  Can’t brag about Afghanistan yet [but I'm sure that's next year's address], so we all get to pretend what a good idea the Iraq adventure was, how it was worth the blood and treasure, and how combat is over [even though the extremists haven't received the message].  Come to think of it, maybe that’s the reason: he’s telegraphing the info to the guys still setting car bombs in Iraq that we’re standing down.  So, they can blow our brains out.

    POTUS is one smart cookie.

Tell me this is a bad dream.

    ========================
And THAT is the 64K question. The better part of Iraq is a combat zone in one way or another; there are no front lines, no rear, and no rest for those who must maintain vigilance. Whoever is writing his bullshit for him his teleprompter (Favreau) needs a good thumping for being an utter fool.

The man (O) cannot even take care of are own borders, there are car bombs, mass killings and today 8 people were killed in Cancun and that country is miles from the United States.  I fear the Cartels are beginning to learn there tactics from the Iraqi and Afghan insurgents

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Now that you mention it, Tony, they do bear a resemblance to each other.  Hmmmm…. :)

Excellent post, Larry – I said from the get-go that Obama was Bush III, not McCain, and damn if he has not demonstrated that reality time and time again (FISA, Faith based initiatives, and so much more, including this).

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Ah, so Brazille is still out there spewing her nonsense?  I have NEVER understood how that woman made it so far considering she hsa been wrong abt SO much.  It’s like a weather person – they are happy if they get it right 50-50, but Donna isn’t even doing THAT well, is she?  What a nightmare…

Yep, mission accomplished II. Bush III. It’s about time the Obamas camped in Yellowstone Park. They could eat beans and jerky and wear plaid shirts and cowboy hats all posing together for the TV while they “rough it” and pretend to care about the plight of regular Americans.

I just listened to Krauthammer. He doesn’t agree that BO needs to give recognition to W in his speech. The fact that it’s the deadline Bush set; retaining Sec Gates and Gen Patreus speak for itself. He also said the proper thing would be a joint presentation–POTUS and president of Iraq.

The only news media that is telling the story containing some truth, is the Army Times:

Combat brigades in Iraq under different name

7 Advise and Assist Brigades, made up of troops from BCTs, still in Iraq By Kate Brannen – Staff writer
    Posted : Saturday Aug 21, 2010 16:10:59 EDT

As the final convoy of the Army’s 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Lewis, Wash., entered Kuwait early Thursday, a different Stryker brigade remained in Iraq.
Soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division are deployed in Iraq as members of an Advise and Assist Brigade, the Army’s designation for brigades selected to conduct security force assistance.
So while the “last full U.S. combat brigade” have left Iraq, just under 50,000 soldiers from specially trained heavy, infantry and Stryker brigades will stay, as well as two combat aviation brigades.
    (snip)
The Army selected brigade combat teams as the unit upon which to build advisory brigades partly because they would be able to retain their inherent capability to conduct offensive and defensive operations, according to the Army’s security force assistance field manual, which came out in May 2009. This way, the brigade can shift the bulk of its operational focus from security force assistance to combat operations if necessary.
To prepare for their mission in Iraq, heavy, infantry and Stryker brigades receive specialized training that can include city management courses, civil affairs training and border patrol classes.
    (snip)

    http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/08/dn-brigades-stay-under-different-name-081910/

So they make a combat soldier sleep through a “City Management” course and when he goes back to the baracks,he is an “Assist and Training Soldier”.  And I thought that Bush/Cheney had perfected the “Big Lie”…Compared to Obama, they were rank amatuer liars.

    Barack the neocon

    New York Post,
    by John Podhoretz

    Original Article

Last night, President Obama did something amazing. He delivered — dare I say it? — a rather neoconservative speech, in the sense that neoconservatism has argued for aggressive American involvement in the world both for the world’s sake and for the sake of extending American freedoms in order to enhance and preserve American security. Perhaps Obama did not even realize it, but when he said that “as the leader of the free world, America will do more than just defeat on the battlefield those who offer hatred and destruction — we will also lead….

  • kenoshamarge

Every President must praise the men and women who do the fighting that the government sends them to do. No President would last long that did not. It’s a given that any presidential speech will offer such praise.

I suspect that Oblahblah’s feelings about the men and women in the military is much like Lawrence O’Donnell when he said something about the reason they join up because they haven’t got anything better to do. That’s JMO and it could be wrong.

What I don’t understand is what the purpose of this speech was. What did he think to gain? Is he so accustomed by now to having the media kowtow every time he opens his yap that he thought he would give a speech and everyone would feel a “tingle” and declare it the best speech ever? If so, he was wrong. Even Fred Kaplan at Slate called it muddled and the best obamamedia sycophant Eugene Robinson could come up with was the he projected “gravitas”.

What Obama has accomplished by declaring an end to combat in that part of the Middle East is cutting off combat pay and other combat related benefiets for all the military personel that are still being shot at and killed. That is how he shows his gratitude for all the sacrifices made by our American Armed Forces.

No, it is not true.  Our soldiers in Iraq still get “Combat Pay”

  • skeeter

Don’t you mean other options in Obama’s choice of words?

Just because Obama has declared “an end of combat” that doesn’t make it so. Have you heard or read anything from the opposition to the American Armed Forces saying that they are laying down their arms? NO! Or have you seen or heard of a treaty declaring an end of combat? As Mr Johnson stated ”there is still 50,000 American troops in Iraq and until every single troop has left Iraq, the enemy will still be shooting at them”. Does that sound like the end of combat? Unless of course Obama means to imply those 50,000 Americans will not be allowed to defend themselves.  Anything Obama does doesn’t surprise me though.

    Here it is:

“Iraq (land and airspace) is included in the list of designated hostile fire or imminent danger pay areas (effective since Sep 17, 1990),” said Defense Department spokeswoman Eileen Lainez in an e-mail. “These pays are based upon a location’s designation as a combat zone or direct support area. Therefore, the pays won’t change Sept. 1.”

Sorry Skeeter, my question was for Larry Johnson.

Larry, what do you think our other options are in Iraq?

    >>> I don’t know who first uttered the advice, “Declare victory and get out,” but that appears to be the present strategy.

Sen. George Aiken of Vermont, concerning VietNam.

Obama should have welcomed the soldiers home and thanked them for the service to their country; he could have reviewed the troops as CIC instead of speachifying from the Oval office.

This president is totally out of tune in the empathy dept. It’s a good thing that the country isn’t acting like him; that GWB actually took the time to greet some of the soldiers coming home.  Obama has of course, expressed his opposition to the Iraq war before his election.  But now, he is president of the country.  By his actions, Obama is embodying the attitude of the country back when the Vietnam vets came home “in defeat.”

And why would you advocate such treatment for bears and wolves? What have Yellowstone denizens done to YOU to merit cruelty?

NOT to mention the probable uptick in Bigfoot/Sasquatch sightings in the area.

We used to call this, “VietNamization.”

more likely the  drug cartels are as aware as we are, of obamas lack of interest in the border (and america as a whole) and are stepping it up. every single thing he has done thus far has been so anti-american it hard to comprehend how many people were fooled by his B/S.

  • bamaLV

all those wasted trillions of tax payer money that obaME gave to his cronies would have been better spent (and probably cheaper too) if he just sent every citizen say $150,000. (since its our money to begin with)  we’d see how fast the economy would improve.  people could pay off or down their mortgages, start spending again and turn the economy around.  it seems like such an easy solution but then obame wouldnt be able to spread it around to his friends and keep the rest of us down and out and looking for handouts.

since the eagle is an american symbol, maybe it was trying to jump out the window.

    Surfered,
I don’t think we have many good options.  Also depends on what our ultimate strategic goal is.  If we want to contain Iran then we should probably step up covert support tot he Sunnis.  Problem with that is we end up funding terrorism by the very same folks (at least ideologically) who want to attack us.  I don’t believe occupying Iraq is an option.  We could take a shot at cultivating the moderate Shias and using them to drive a wedge in Iran.

But the wonderful thought about campling in Yellowsone is that there are many bears and bears eat people. There have been reports of maulings over the years.

Great post on the realities in Iraq.  After reading the end of the piece I realized why Obama plays so much golf-he needs those lovely little white spheres to stuff his codpiece.  Thanks for the laugh in a serious post.

Well, that should help the steel industry. You can replace the lead in shotgun shells with bbs, works great. And a steel bullet will kill just as well as a lead one. It can even be configured to mushroom on impact, like the lead ones. So even if they outlaw lead in an attempt to deprive the American public of its ammunition, there are lots of metals one can make bullets out of..lots and lots.

  • Fred

    Well said Larry.
Having been in Iraq, I am inclined to say that Iran’s influence among every day Shia is overrated. Iraq’s Shia are Arabs and many of them remember the Iran-Iraq war.

Though wouldn’t you agree that the radicals in Tehran are still a preferrable option to the Wahhabis?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

great sobering article on iraq, larry. thanks for the imagery at the end of the article – it provides a little humor to an otherwise unsettling reality.
