We came and went overseas multiple times, as I remember one could not stay out of US more than a year in order to keep our residency. For years the only thing we had to do was fill out a simple form each year and hand it in at the Post Office. Eventually, even that was phased out. We keep the old cards nostalgically, sometimes looking at our youthful mugs! We were always amazed at how simple and non invasive the whole process was. Nobody ever treated us any differently as permanent residents, and how showing a card one should be proud to carry can be called discriminatory is totally beyond my comprehension!   My husband and I had green cards for years, during which time he became a prof in a medical school. I'm an employer and talk about getting screwed from all sides!! I can't hire anybody without documenting, with 3 pieces of ID,  that they are legally entitled to work in this country.If I don't have that paperwork on file, I can be fined and even jailed. However, if I request that documentation, I'm discriminating and can be sued. So the only real solution is to....stop hiring people. That's okay because with Obamacare fines looming over my head as well as increases in unemployment taxes, I'm reluctant to hire anyway. Suing the University is really bizarre.
