TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iranian authorities have suspended the execution by stoning of a woman convicted of adultery, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, after weeks of condemnation from around the world.
"The verdict regarding the extramarital affairs has stopped and it's being reviewed," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Iran's state-run English-language Press TV.
The statement came a day after European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso called the stoning sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani "barbaric beyond words," the latest in a string of criticisms by foreign powers.

September 08, 2010Why burn the entire Koran?Stu Tarlowe
It seems to me that the church in Gainesville planning to burn Korans on 9/11 is making a big mistake. They have been denounced as stupid, insensitive, and crude, and these criticisms are correct. But if one accepts that it is OK to destroy holy texts (the US destroyed Holy Bibles in Afghanistan, after all), and the demonstrators want to make a point, they should confine themselves to burning only those parts of the Koran that are hateful to other religions or to infidels in general, or those chapters that instruct how infidels are worthy only of being converted, enslaved or killed.
They could burn just those pages that command all Muslims to wage jihad, killing the infidel wherever he can be found, by whatever means available, in order to further Islam's goal of world domination. Or the parts that order Muslims to kill any fellow Muslim who renounces Islam.
Oh, and they could also burn those parts of the Koran which dictate a particular hatred for Jews, calling them pigs and monkeys. And the parts that tell how, if a Jew is hiding behind a tree or a rock, the tree or rock should say, "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me; come and kill him!"
And of course, they could burn only the parts of the Koran on which the most brutal aspects of Sharia law are based, like the stoning to death of women accused of adultery, or the "honor killings" of women by their own families.
And they could burn those parts of the Koran that instruct how women are to be treated like property, and how they can be beaten by their husbands, and how women's bodies should be mutilated, and how a man can have multiple wives, some of them, like Mohammed's, as young as 9 years old.
But there is certainly no need to burn all those many parts of the Most Holy Koran that promote peace and happiness, and that preach respect and tolerance for the other religions of the world, and coexistence with those other religions. There's no need to burn those many parts of the Koran which describe a loving, forgiving god who inspires his worshippers to go forth and spread his love among their neighbors and the rest of the world.
There is no need to burn the all the parts of the Koran that exhort Muslims to respect the sensitivities of others, and to cherish life. Those parts of the Koran should certainly be spared from the flames.

Breeze, there were reports of an investigation into Mr. Manchin's use of state money for work at the governor's mansion. Voters may have become suspicious...maybe just in time to weed out another weasel.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank, an independent federal agency, loaned more than $1 billion to the Mexican state oil company PEMEX in 2009 to support the company’s oil drilling in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The bank has another $1 billion in loans in the pipeline for 2010, unless Congress objects. PEMEX was the Export-Import Bank’s largest borrower in 2009 and has borrowed $8.3 billion from the U.S. federal government since 1998. I joyfully bring you a glowing report as I wrap up my tour across America 2010, where nightly, all summer long, I have been privileged to meet with great, hardworking and hard-playing American families from every imaginable walk of life in 68 cities. I share with you a powerful, united message of unstoppable good will, decency, indefatigable, positive spirit and a herculean work ethic that is absolutely dedicated to bringing America back from this embarrassing brink of unaccountable upside-down government gone mad. Former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson on Tuesday compared President Barack Obama’s treatment of the American people to a dog urinating on a fire hydrant. In what could prove a sleeper race with national implications, some West Virginia Democrats say they are seeing signs that the state's Senate race could be turning into an unexpectedly tough and expensive battle. (Snip) A late July poll showed Mr. Manchin outpacing Mr. Raese 51 percent to 35 percent, but a Rasmussen survey of 500 "likely voters" taken a little more than month later found the governor's lead had shrunk to 6 percentage points, shocking many who hadn't considered that the Byrd seat could go to anyone but another well-known Democrat.

President Obama certainly has it ruff these days. With his approval ratings plummeting and both the House and the Senate trending Republican, he must feel like he's been put in the doghouse. Even members of his own party are attacking him; Chris Matthews, his designated chew toy, has even come out against the beloved teleprompter. (Snip) The only person who has ever likened President Obama to a dog is President Obama, who once declared that he was a "mutt" and a member of a "mongrel people." Obama's language brings to mind uncomfortable comparisons with Old Yeller, who was "an ugly,

In the heat of the Ground Zero mosque debate, New York public high schools are pushing a test that slams the history of Christianity while exalting the spread of Islam. Some NY teachers were so upset when reading the Regents exam on Global History and Geography that they have complained to the press and even leaked their teacher’s guide on the test. [snip] Though the school board chose a pro-Islam writer with Esposito, they clearly did not choose a pro-Christianity historian in Charles Gibson.
