Obama said he would consider raising the top rate on capital gains, but only for people making over 250,000. The same is true for small business owners. If you are in the top personal income tax rate your taxes will go up, but only for those with high incomes. The estate tax also only affects people who have very large estates. In any case, most of these taxes sunset at the end of 2010 and will go back to pre-Bush levels. That includes tax cuts for middle class families . Any changes will have to be negotiated by the President and Congress. They are going up unless someone changes it. Tax cuts for middle class families are more likely to be protected under an Obama administration.

You can bet the Obama campaign will downplay her meetings and continue to vaunt his similar cram for exams meetings during his last trip abroad. Women are always questioned about their experience and assumed to have less ability than their male counterparts. It is this assumption about ability that Sarah Palin is dealing with. When pundits talk about Sarah Palin’s “lack of experience,” what they really mean is that because she is a woman (“An Alaska Beauty Queen”, as Juan Williams and Allen Colmes so eloquently, independently and sexistly put it the other night) she lacks ability. You have to get a hell of a lot of experience to make up for that assumed lack of ability if you are a woman. When the pundits talk about Obama’s experience level, what they are talking about is his assumed ability level because he is male. The best way to determine who’s running a head in a particular state is to take all the polls together as a group. Based on that measurement, Obama has a slight lead in Colorado … not adjusted for the Bradley Effect, of course. And in a state like Colorado which is overwhelmingly white, the Bradley Effect will be significant.

on 60 minutes this week obama ‘refined’ his statement about taxing $250,000 and up.. I think he said that $150,000 to $250,000 will be taxed but not as much as $250,000. In terms of raising estate taxes.. my family will leave a certain amount that many would consider a lot.. I know I do, but I have 5 siblings, so it won’t be all that much when it gets to me.. that original amount will be taxed at a high rate, if I understand this correctly.

As far as the estate tax goes, I don’t see why people should not pay taxes on money they inherit. However, there should be a large exemption. Obama would have a 7 million dollar exemption for married couples. That seems reasonable to me, especially since most people inherit capital gains and never pay taxes on those gains.

How the Democrats Created the Financial Crisis: Kevin Hassett

Commentary by Kevin Hassett

Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) — The financial crisis of the past year has provided a number of surprising twists and turns, and from Bear Stearns Cos. to American International Group Inc., ambiguity has been a big part of the story.

Why did Bear Stearns fail, and how does that relate to AIG? It all seems so complex.

But really, it isn’t. Enough cards on this table have been turned over that the story is now clear. The economic history books will describe this episode in simple and understandable terms: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac exploded, and many bystanders were injured in the blast, some fatally.

Fannie and Freddie did this by becoming a key enabler of the mortgage crisis. They fueled Wall Street’s efforts to securitize subprime loans by becoming the primary customer of all AAA-rated subprime-mortgage pools. In addition, they held an enormous portfolio of mortgages themselves.

In the times that Fannie and Freddie couldn’t make the market, they became the market. Over the years, it added up to an enormous obligation. As of last June, Fannie alone owned or guaranteed more than $388 billion in high-risk mortgage investments. Their large presence created an environment within which even mortgage-backed securities assembled by others could find a ready home.

The problem was that the trillions of dollars in play were only low-risk investments if real estate prices continued to rise. Once they began to fall, the entire house of cards came down with them.

Turning Point

Take away Fannie and Freddie, or regulate them more wisely, and it’s hard to imagine how these highly liquid markets would ever have emerged. This whole mess would never have happened.

It is easy to identify the historical turning point that marked the beginning of the end.

Back in 2005, Fannie and Freddie were, after years of dominating Washington, on the ropes. They were enmeshed in accounting scandals that led to turnover at the top. At one telling moment in late 2004, captured in an article by my American Enterprise Institute colleague Peter Wallison, the Securities and Exchange Comiission’s chief accountant told disgraced Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines that Fannie’s position on the relevant accounting issue was not even “on the page” of allowable interpretations.

Then legislative momentum emerged for an attempt to create a “world-class regulator” that would oversee the pair more like banks, imposing strict requirements on their ability to take excessive risks. Politicians who previously had associated themselves proudly with the two accounting miscreants were less eager to be associated with them. The time was ripe.

Greenspan’s Warning

The clear gravity of the situation pushed the legislation forward. Some might say the current mess couldn’t be foreseen, yet in 2005 Alan Greenspan told Congress how urgent it was for it to act in the clearest possible terms: If Fannie and Freddie “continue to grow, continue to have the low capital that they have, continue to engage in the dynamic hedging of their portfolios, which they need to do for interest rate risk aversion, they potentially create ever-growing potential systemic risk down the road,” he said. “We are placing the total financial system of the future at a substantial risk.”

What happened next was extraordinary. For the first time in history, a serious Fannie and Freddie reform bill was passed by the Senate Banking Committee. The bill gave a regulator power to crack down, and would have required the companies to eliminate their investments in risky assets.

Different World

If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, a blizzard of terrible mortgage paper fluttered out of the Fannie and Freddie clouds, burying many of our oldest and most venerable institutions. Without their checkbooks keeping the market liquid and buying up excess supply, the market would likely have not existed.

But the bill didn’t become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it on a party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a partisan issue. Republicans, tied in knots by the tight Democratic opposition, couldn’t even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

That such a reckless political stand could have been taken by the Democrats was obscene even then. Wallison wrote at the time: “It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the profit. The Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio limitations could not possibly do so if their constituents understood what they were doing.”

Mounds of Materials

Now that the collapse has occurred, the roadblock built by Senate Democrats in 2005 is unforgivable. Many who opposed the bill doubtlessly did so for honorable reasons. Fannie and Freddie provided mounds of materials defending their practices. Perhaps some found their propaganda convincing.

But we now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd, have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the years.

Throughout his political career, Obama has gotten more than $125,000 in campaign contributions from employees and political action committees of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, second only to Dodd, the Senate Banking Committee chairman, who received more than $165,000.

Clinton, the 12th-ranked recipient of Fannie and Freddie PAC and employee contributions, has received more than $75,000 from the two enterprises and their employees. The private profit found its way back to the senators who killed the fix.

There has been a lot of talk about who is to blame for this crisis. A look back at the story of 2005 makes the answer pretty clear.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that’s worth keeping in mind while Democrats point fingers between now and Nov. 4: Senator John McCain was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would have averted this mess.

I think you are confusing individual and family income. The cap rate is $102,000 in 2008 and Obama said he might not start the increase until 250,000. Also, the rate would only be 6.2% because medicare at 1.45% is already taxed. Tell me about McCain’s plan to take away health deductibility.

That is the same percentage who said so in June, when Clinton ended her bid and urged her backers to line up behind the Democratic senator from Illinois.

Clinton backers’ reluctance to support Obama helps explain why he is having a tougher time solidifying partisan supporters than McCain. Overall, 74 percent of Democrats say they will vote for Obama, compared to 87 percent of Republicans behind the Arizona senator. About nine in 10 Clinton supporters are Democrats.

The problem that supporters of Clinton, the New York senator, have with Obama seems to flow from their measure of him as a candidate, not from issues. From establishing a timeline for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq to abortion to canceling tax cuts on the rich, their views of the importance of issues are virtually identical to Democrats in general.

Yet they find Obama less likable, honest, experienced and inspiring than Democrats overall do, and have a better view of McCain. And while majorities of Clinton supporters say Obama shares their values and understands ordinary Americans, they’re less likely to say so than Democrats overall.

The count you give is if FL and MI are fully counted. So, even in the best case scenario, Hillary still was behind. I am a member on some forums where I write and speak to veterans. McCain the Mc-Bushniki clone doesn’t seem to set well for them, if you knew anything about what these guys and gals felt about the current situation with the economy and the war in Iraq and the possibility with more wars down the line , it might open your eyes to the abuse and suffering they have suffered under this current administration. They are quite discouraged with things as they are. Many have not been given the proper health care, many have committed suicide, many have been denied the benefits they earned and they also object to the war in Iraq and how it has played out. Bush has shown hostility toward our troops , slashed into programs for them ,claiming they are too expensive. Many suffer from PTSD ,brain injury and are even suicidal, many are homeless on the street, I read an estimated 250,000 up to a million. Ok folks, what is your beef here? if you vote for McCain just because you are bitter about Hillary not be elected, I know I wanted her to get elected too. But Palin is pretty much a part of the religious right crowd. It’s not even funny. Think about these men and women who have been left out of the system and how much they had sacrificed for their country.Put yourself in their shoes. Many are disillusioned , as a part of stop loss they are being sent back to Iraq in spite of injuries and mental problems such as PTSD , and brain injuries and other injuries. For once listen to their voices. Vote for McCain and Bush polices then. He voted with Bush and estimated 90-95 % of the time this year. Think about the economic crises now. What do you really want , think carefully ,your vote will make an impact on the lives of others and shape foreign policies and domestic policies to come. By the way, my dad was a vet in Korea , and Vietnam, he also was apart of the security of this country which was pretty much top secret. I didn’t even know what he really did , other than being in the army. I really didn’t find out til later when he died. My brother was also in the military.
