Why Do the Lobbyists Love Obama?

I find it strange that the mythology of Barack Obama includes the meme that he eschews that nasty lobbyist money and is a man above politics. But if you look at the facts of who is giving him money a disturbing picture emerges–he is loved by lobbyists. Don’t take my word for it, do the research yourself. It is easy.

Let’s start with the top ten Lobbying firms in Washington. You can find them here. They are:

Patton Bogg
Cassidy & Associates
Akin Gump
Van Scoyoc
Williams and Jensen
Hogan & Hartson
Ernst & Young
Barbour, Griffith and Rogers
Quinn Gillepsie & Associates
PMA Group

The data covers activity since 1990. John McCain has been in the Senate for the last 18 years and he received a total of $221,754 from these firms and their employees. That works out to an average of $12,319.67 per year. Barack Obama has only been around for four years but he has already received more money than John McCain–$259,022.00.
That works out to a tidy sum of $64,755.50. Why is Barack Obama, the supposed bane of the lobbyists, getting five times as much money per year as John McCain?

We can look at this another way. Open Secrets also lists lobbying firms by the “Heavy Hitters.” Open Secrets lists the top 100 firms who have given money to politicians since 1989. So we have 19 years of data. Here are the top ten firms:

Top 10 Donors:

American Fedn of State, County & Municipal Employees $39,632,103
AT&T Inc $39,502,961
National Assn of Realtors $32,879,706
Goldman Sachs $29,322,212
American Assn for Justice $29,160,889
Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers $28,480,884
National Education Assn $28,153,159
Laborers Union $26,708,339
Service Employees International Union $26,562,163
Carpenters & Joiners Union $25,745,082

Here’s the screenshot of the top twenty money givers.

all-time-heavy-hitters2-22.jpg

Let’s focus on the most recent election cycle–2007 thru 31 July 2008–and compare what Barack Obama has received with what John McCain, the alleged Washington insider, has collected.

Donor Barack Obama John McCain
AT&T $123,256.00 $168,613.00
Goldman Sachs $632,330.00 $198,045.00
National Education Assoc $20,980.00 $0.00
SEIU $22,300.00 $0.00
American Medical Assn $6,350.00 $0.00
Citigroup $389,949.00 $259,701.00
TOTAL $1,195,165.00 $626,359.00

Got that? Mr. Obama, the man who claims he does not take money from lobbyists took almost twice as much money from the top 15 lobbying firms (the real big dogs of Washington) than John McCain. Who stinketh the most?

When you run your campaign as the self-righteous savior of “new politics” and savage anyone who takes “lobbyist” money then why in the hell are you one of the top recipients. Particularly telling with the collapse of Wall Street is the $632,330.00 Obama pocketed from Goldman Sachs.

Maybe McCain is not ready to be President. His campaign seems incapable of making this very simple, very basic argument to expose the hypocrisy of Obama. But if Obama is elected do not kid yourself that he is something “new.” His audacity is that he has convinced most Americans he is not doing what he is doing. He is bought and paid for by the top lobbyists. Don’t kid yourself.

Politics. How I wish I never cared ! Why get involved with something so full of corruption , so competitive, so unpredictable, so dangerous ? A sport between two unorganized organizations who bitterly detest each other’s rules, unwilling to compromise, only one side wins, the other side never loses graciously

. In the end, there is still no winner. Why get involved in a game where nobody wins ?

This election has been beyond corrupt , unpredictable !!!

The Republican Party blemished by a viral hatred towards President Bush, the nominee was almost certain to lose.

The Democrat Party chose an unknown, radical left wing liberal who is unsuitable to work in the White House’s kitchen yet alone be our American President .

The right wing wants the country to be run their way.

The left wing wants the country to be run their way.

The right fears the left agenda.

The left fears the right agenda.

Never a compromise between the two.

Just a bunch of grumpy, arguing ,immature, power hungry men and women

Who are suppose to represent the people that voted them into their jobs .

Nothing gets done, everything is chaotic , nobody is happy .

Why get involved in politics? Why bother ? Why care ?

Personally this election year has driven me close to insanity yet I can’t enough .

It is a ‘Gotcha game’, scoring points ….winning the day .

I am so angry at the left for subjecting our country to Barrack Hussein Obama .

Just typing out his name is a major clue that this man is wrong for our country.

He gave his flock a good speech and that was the beginning of their saviors coronation.

He was the chosen one , he could do no wrong, if he had committed murder they still would have backed him . The MSM backed him also and from that moment the media wars began to erupt .

Barack Hussein Osama’s past and present deeds and judgment went unquestioned .

His relationship with terrorist and radical American hating associates were ignored .

This man sat in a church that spew hatred against white people and America for 20 years .

The media does not care, nope, he is their guy no matter what .

How dare they push this monster on America . How dare they assume American’s are just suppose to sit back ,do nothing, say nothing and accept him as our President. They make me sick, there is nothing I detest more than a breathing liberal .

In my heart this evil man cannot win, my heart tells me that the American people will be sensible and do what is right on election day and vote for a man who loves America, John McCain . My heart tells me the people in this wonderful country will not fall for the nonsense , lying words this Barack Hussein Obama has spewed for over a year. Somehow the people of America have to be more intelligent that this man would like to believe they are .My heart cannot imagine him being our President . My mind tells me a mistake could very well be made ,that the American people are being played for fools .That the people in this country never bothered to research Barack Hussein Obama to find out who he is and where he has been and what he will do to our country . Be very afraid American’s. This man is not what America needs.

Along with John McCain is his Vice Presidential choice, Sarah Palin who became a bright star in the Republican party offering a freshness and innocent portrait of unique style and passion . Together John McCain and Sarah Palin can change the way politics is played in Washington ,DC .

Please do not vote for Barack Hussein Obama , please vote for John McCain, a true American hero who loves America and will do everything to make all the wrongs right again, to fix what is broke ,to mend the mistakes, the ills and untouched . Please do not elect Barack Hussein Obama who will weaken our military and turn a blind eye to future terrorist attacks on our homeland . Our country is at risk , Islamic Jihad is alive and well and they are planning to harm us again, they will destroy us if they can . They have not given up ,they will never walk away from their evil mission to attack America sadistically and viciously .

Please vote for John McCain who understands this evil and dangerous threat to our country and who will react with force to keep the terrorist from destroying our country and everything we stand for .

I hope, wish and pray that on election day morning before every thinking and caring and reasonably intelligent American goes to cast their vote that they will do the right thing and vote for John McCain.

  • C.S.

Is he, or is he not, in control of his presidential campaign?

And if he is not, then who is?

Let him put his money where his mouth is and return all the money from lobbyists even if it means giving up that circle 0 jet. And while he is at it, he can return from his remedial debate classes and put in an appearance at his real job in the Senate and pretend to do the work of the People while John and Hillary take care of this economic crisis.

  • benny

A real and concerned move of McCain will ofcourse be named a political move. ask yourself, in history how many presidential nominees have done this? McCain really cares. period. that ofcourse makes the obots head burst. can’t help it. lol.

  • Jules

What will we do with a President Obama? Well I imagine we will all be socialists or worse….oh how hysterical. You will be in trouble too unless you are a welfare recipient. But once Obama breaks the back of the entire country on the verge of recession with his double capital gains tax, tax on dead people’s grieving families, corporate taxes, and a 28% tax for the sale of primary residences, there might be nothing left to pay for welfare. Hmmm, wonder how all that calculates out…the middle class ‘may’ have to pay $1000 less per year in taxes vs. all the taxes mentioned above. Oh but maybe the math doesn’t matter to you…just simple little unimportant facts. Or maybe you’re just a better “Patriot” who loves paying his taxes:)

  • dixie

Beats me but if you say so. :) But I thought Larry was talking about lobbyists. But Obama can’t debate McCain on foriegn relations. Or probabely anything else for that matter?

  • luvtruth

  • samb

Obama can not agree with McCain his ego would never allow it. It’s always about Obama always.

  • Jules

And when he looks like an idiot, he can’t call his opponent a cheater like he did last time.

Here’s how I see the solo debate going:

    1) Obama jacks himself off
    2) The commentator jacks him off
    3) The MSM all jack him and themselves off while replaying all the jack offs
    4) Obama declared winner (running unopposed as usual)
    5) Later Obama gets a BJ in the back of a limo by a gay dude with some crack

They never really needed McCain for all that anyway.

Sen John McCain has stopped playing politics for the amount of time it takes to serve the best interest of Americans.

it is his job as a Senator and he is going to his place of work to do what he was hired to do.

his long and reputable record of being able to bring both sides of the aisle together to accomplish the job is so far beyond anything mr obama would even know how to begin to do.

McCain took the lead and the obama cartel is yet again caught with it’s drawers down. so of course they must spin it ten ways from sunday that Mac is “politicking”. how the bobo must have scrambled to get his party and harry reid to make a statement that both candidates stay out of washington.

of course, McCain does not take orders from reid, as well he should not, and will head down tomorrow,

the bobo’s press conference was riddled with misleading half truths and face saving slogans….but the egg on his face was quite apparent to me.

i’m getting to actually like McCain ,and look forward to what he will be able to accomplish as POTUS. he is certainly not another g. bush. not even close.

Obama’s audacity is that he has the (audacity) “balls” to:
    1. tell you that he is doing one thing when he actually is doing another while holding a straight face and looking you in the eye.
    2. Accuse you of doing something you are not while he is doing that very same thing, e.g. playing the race card against the Clintons while accusing them of doing it.
He does all of this successfully because he thinks he is smarter than anyone and can get away with it and because he holds people in contempt.
He has insulated himself with bullshit that no one seems to be able to break through. He is a phony with a lot of money sent to him by white Americans, mainly.
I am an AA female Hillary supporter and I tell you white Americans you must stop him. He would be a nightmare for the country.

None of the Obots I know believe he takes money from lobbyists or Lehman Bros etc. You’re right, Larry, McCain needs an ad about this since the msm won’t do their jobs.

After the Keating 5 scandal McCain actually did change some of his standards about earmarks etc.

Nader is right–there’s too much money in politics. I am hoping if McCain wins he will continue working with Russ Feingold to get money out of Washington. We’re the only country in the world that runs campaigns as long as we do and lets so much money into our government.

After voting for and working for Dems my whole life I now see they are just as corrupt as the Repubs — it’s so depressing.

  • bayareavoter

And Larry, back to your question–WHY do lobbyists and Wall Street love BO? What do you think the answer is?

  • tzada

This is one of the stupidest….

23 Sept: CBS: Obama May Not Return to D.C. for Bailout Vote
(CLEARWATER BEACH, FLA.) – Although Barack Obama argues that the financial meltdown is an “emergency situation”, he said today that he may remain on the campaign trail, rather than returning to the Capitol, to vote on the $700 billion plan.
“Look if we get a consensus and everybody is popping champagne – then I will probably be going back to campaign with folks who are having a tough time in places like Ohio, and Michigan and Pennsylvania,” Obama said adding, “If this ends up being a close vote or a vote where the outcome is an open question then obviously this is a top priority.”..

  • Jules

So I have an irate kindred soul out there. Good to know!

  • Amy Crunch

I think it’s more what they want from him. The article was about what had been contributed – not solicited. Contributed. They prolly figured he had a good chance. Maybe they talked to Dean, Brazile, and Pelosi. Also it’s pretty obvious Obama is a player. The Exelon stink is a perfect example. Some poor people get wind of nuclear outages near their home. They raise a stink. Obama of course gets on the bandwagon and loudly proclaims he’s going to clean up the industry. Then he sits back and waits.

And Tom Ayers – or someone close to him – gives Obama a call. And then the games begin.

The big lobbyists and other influence peddlers don’t mind paying money – it’s a game and they all know it. And politicians who know how to play the game and take the grease – those are people you trust. And Obama is the slimiest of all and so certainly can be trusted.

Perhaps that’s why: Obama’s a player. They know they’ll get a good ROI.

  • tzada

Think about this….. Nancy and Harry Reid and a couple of others were in a secret meeting about the budget.( I thought secret meetings like that were illegal?) Any ole how, one of the things they were planning on doing is giving the big three automakers a 500,000 million (maybe billion?) infusion. Can you say vote buying?

  • bayareavoter

Boortz on Fox was actually saying if you bail out mortgages and banks for $700 billion then automakers and other corps will want the same. So where does it stop?

I obviously don’t want to see the total collapse of the economy but we didn’t just decide one day to buy a big house. We saved our down payment and bought a condo; then we sold it and put a larger down payment on a cottage, then waited thru the 5 years in the late ’80s when the market stalled; then sold it and put a down payment on the house we have now with a sizable mortgage.

Here in CA our house is still worth a lot more than when we bought it 10 yrs ago and Barky wants to tax my profit 28% (now the first $500,000 of profit is tax free) when I sell it for my retirement.

So his benefactors in Lehman Bros and other banks didn’t do anything for regular middle and upper middle class working people like us.

And you believe what Hannity says??? That guy is the most evil, racist, narrow-minded hacks in this country. He should be banned from TV, radio and even walking down the street. He isn’t even smart – a total loser hick from nowheresville. and he is SO SCARED the Democrat is going to win, old pillsbury doughboy won’t know what hit him and will have no one to attack anymore.

Why are lobbyists so attracted to Obama?

Obama said he would go back to washington to vote if the bill is ready in congress. guess what, leaders of the House told mccain it would be better if he didn’t come to washington…he hasn’t been to a vote in ages (he has the WORST voting record of any senator-even after 19 years) and they told him he wouldn’t be helpful now.

this is a total political ploy for mccain to change the dialogue as he saw the polls and knows he is cooked. nothing more.
its 2008 now, these people communicate every day by phone, internet, email…oh, i forgot, McCain can’t use a keyboard without Cindy’s fingers.

don’t need to be in washington…he and Obama are NOT on the committee structuring this bailout – they have nothing to offer other than their conditions and yeah or ney.

  • WildChild

so what you’re saying is that BOBO won’t be there to work on the bill…

    But McCain will.

The Schadenfreude overdose will happen when the GOP POTUS asks Bill Clinton to restore Americans’ faith in the economic system in his press appearance tonight.

The same way Bill Clinton had to give America a boost to its prestige with Tsunami relief efforts.

The GOP is cancer to the economy.

So sad that the Democrats put a guy embroiled in the scandal from campaign donors atop its ticket.

The world awaits word from Bill Clinton. So does America.

  • waldenpond

It was to be foreign policy, but Obama was going to do economic policy. Palin has pushed energy (domestic issue) as a security issue. Obama was most likely going to copy her position tying certain economic issues to security.

Obama needs a debate now (controlled of course by his moderator.) McCain is stronger on foreign policy and would have done better. Obama wanted to push foreign policy out of this debate to economic issues NOW while the economy is the issue. There would never be a debate on foreign policy if Obama got his way. Obama wants the subject matter of the debate to be the economy BEFORE a vote ever takes place. If this is resolved without him…. his input was never needed. The Dems demanded McCain’s leadership and input yesterday… today they got what they asked for.

New important expose on Obama~What’s behind the lobbyists! This book needs your support go to Amazon, buy multiples

Barack H. Obama: The Unauthorized Biography, by Webster G. Tarpley

is a massive, devastating exposé of the influences behind the candidate. Obama, a classic existentialist anti-hero, a creature of the Ford Foundation, is utterly without principles – perfect for a career in the most corrupt turf in the USA, the Chicago political machine. Fraud and graft reach dizzying heights – his close cronies, the felons Al-Samarrae, Auchi and Rezko, have stolen countless millions. Obama and his guru Zbigniew Brzezinski will take us to the cleaners like we’ve never been before. Webster Tarpley, author of the Unauthorized Biography of George H.W. Bush provides analysis like no other, which is invaluable at this time of crisis. Stop the threat posed by Obama and those who control him.

If they oversampled 3 to 1 and still only got up 9 points (and assuming the MOE is +/- 2), they are not really in very good shape.

Doesn’t this love for Obama by big lobbyists suggest he’s not a Marxist-socialist, as some of the more rightward PUMAs say?

    Why, yes it does.

  • R2D2

“I will probably be going back to campaign with folks who are having a tough time in places like Ohio, and Michigan and Pennsylvania,”

You see, holding a rally helps those people who are having a tough time. Whereas doing a job Obama was elected to do, is not necessary because others will do the lifting for him.

On what basis do you conclude that folks here oppose Obama because he is black? While there may be an exception or two–often quickly banned–that is not the reason a vast majority do not support Obama.

I’ve been spending far too much time myself reading posts and comments. I’d rank the reasons loosely as follows:

    1. Rejection of Obama and his supporter’s hate, sexism, and misogyny.

    2. Obama’s rudeness to Hillary Clinton

    3. Obama’s lies (especially those about his associations with the likes of terrorist Ayers, racist and American preachers like Wright, and so forth)

    4. Obama’s lack of experience

I’d say there is some definite trepidation on the issue of abortion that does give people pause.

Anyway, there are VERY few people that offer any indication that race has any role in their decision.

Stupidity does not have a color. Personally I don’t like Obama’s color right now, the yellow of a coward.Anyone wants to spew racist crap here is so far off base, with that meme of yelling racist in a crowded theater. Idiots. We don’t want Obama(or some of us don’t) because he is a an inexperienced moron. Maybe we can take a quick poll; why aren’t you voting for Obama?.

  • Ferd McBerfle

I was wrong. It became clear to me that most of the dead-enders here are not against Obama because they support Clinton, but because he is black. At least have the guts and the fortitude to own up to the real reasons behind your dislike of Obama.

Well, obamabot, this “dead-ender’s” position is that he is unfit and unqualified to be POTUS. I don’t care if he’s purple polka-dot. This isn’t an issue of color, you ignorant race-baiter; it is an issue of competence and fitness for office. He is neither. So take your sophomoric talking points to HuffPo, where they love your sort of hogwash.

Hey Chris!!….Since you suggest that we here are racist, allow me to make your day….Barack can kiss my hairy black bean bag….That’s right, I’m a black, Uncle Tom, racist!!!

Ah! Larry Ernst & Young are connected to Penny Pritzker and the failed Superior Bank. Ernst & Young did some clever accounting for the Superior Bk that the Pritzkers owned. They were sued by the FDIC and apid quite a bit. While Ernst& Young paid the Pritzkers made lots of money from suit filed by FDIC….interesting to see if there is a connection between Obama Ernst & Young and Obama!

Oh yeah, I forgot… Obama’s accomplishments as an activist is a joke–and certainly a GIANT JOKE since he’s citing it as a major qualification to be President of the United States and the leader of the free world. In his own memoirs, he said he accomplished little as a “community activist”.

As for his legal career… He is no Thurgood Marshall—NOT BY A [DELETED] LONG SHOT. For the eight long years during which he worked as a “civil rights lawyer”, he never argued a single case. No, he was really just a low level bureaucrat, doing research and writing up paper work.

    Castor Troy,

Congrats, you’re one of the less than 5% who see Obama for what he truly is, i.e. about 95% of African Americans are voting for him, including legions of otherwise staunch black republicans.

To me, a black republican is like a feminist republican: A total oxymoron. No offense if you are one. :-/

There are a lot of issues for which I think blacks clearly see the light better–MUCH BETTER than whites, such as their overwhelming opposition to the Iraq war in 2002. I can think of dozens of other examples both historical and current.

This is of course true of ALL groups: No matter what group you belong too, be the classification by race, gender, age, school, club, religion, political party, political ideology, sports team affiliation, etc., there’s always a sore spot or two for which you cannot see straight, where you “project” your feelings and are simply incapable of being objective.

For African Americans, one such sore spot is when a black person cries “I’m the victim of white racism!” Because African Americans do suffer from so many forms of racism, both “soft” (non verbal) and “hard” (racial profiling, harder time for the same crime, etc.), as a group, they’re simply incapable of of being objective, e.g. OJ, Michael Jackson, Marion Berry, Halle Berry, Kwame Kilpatrick, etc., and of course the great Barack Obama. It’s so disturbing how often high profile black celebrities and politicians play the race card when they get into trouble. They do it because it works–or at the very least, it changes the subject to some degree and garners them sympathy from the people they are preying upon.

You mean, those folks who are “bitter” and clinging to their guns and religion, ’cause they’re having a tough time? Those folks? What’s he gonna do, bowl with them?
