[Update: McCain Statement Below the Fold] Via CNN breaking news: “John McCain suspends campaigning to work on economy, requests postponing Friday debate; asks Obama do the same.”

CNN says, “Effective tomorrow morning, McCain is returning to Washington” to try to work out a decision on the financial crisis.

Gloria Borger says that she talked to a high-level official in the Obama campaign who says Obama called McCain this morning to suggest the two candidates would work together on a joint statement. She asked the Obama campaign if they will suspend their campaign, and she was told, “No.” She also asked if the debate will be postponed, and was told no.

UPDATE:

John McCain’s Remarks on the Economic Crisis
New York, NY
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

  • jrterrier

i was wondering whether anyone would do this. this is the right thing to do.

    • http://democratsforrealchange.info Dr. Bobbi Anne white

this was a genius move by McCain. I mean Obama practicing for a debate! when he’s supposed to be in court in Pa answering Philip J. Berg’s complaint? who looks like an amateur now/

      • Dr. Kate

Excellent. The old strategist/warrior strikes again.

The MSM headlines today: economic crisis boosts Obama…now let’s see who has the stones to do something about it.

My guess is that HRC and McCain collaborate to do the right thing.

Ah yes, the lawsuit. Berg is on “no obama radio” tonite, I believe.

If Obama cannot produce the papers, he is finished.

        • Justin

If you think that Hillary Clinton and John McCain are remotely similar in their policy prescriptions for this crisis you have lost it. Hillary is proposing the Home Owner’s Loan Corp idea; McCain just keeps throwing random mavericky-sounding ideas against the wall to see what sticks.

          • Leisa

Justin, yo have not paid attention at all. This was last Friday.

            http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/09/19/mccains-remarks-on-financial-markets/

First, to deal with the immediate crisis, I will lead in the creation of the Mortgage and Financial Institutions trust — the MFI. The underlying principle of the MFI or any approach considered by Congress should be to keep people in their homes and safe guard the life savings of all Americans by protecting our financial system and capital markets. This trust will work with the private sector and regulators to identify institutions that are weak and fix them before they become insolvent. The MFI is an early intervention program to help financial institutions avoid bankruptcy, expensive bailouts and damage to their customers. This will get the Treasury and other financial regulatory authorities in a proactive position instead of reacting in a crisis mode to one situation after another.

The MFI will restore investor and market confidence, build sound financial institutions, assist troubled institutions and protect our financial system while minimizing taxpayer exposure. This is an important step, but it is not enough. I will also take the additional actions needed to make sure a crisis like this is never allowed to build and break over the American people again.

Second, I will propose and sign into law reforms to prevent financial firms from concealing their bad practices. An inexcusable lack of financial transparency allowed Wall Street firms to engage in reckless behavior that padded their profits and fattened executive bonuses when times were good, but now imperil the financial security of millions of Americans when their bets turned sour.

So much of the damage to our economy could have been avoided if these practices had been exposed to the light of day. Americans have a right to know when their jobs, pensions, IRAs, investments, and our whole economy are being put at risk by the recklessness of Wall Street. And under my reforms for the financial sector, that fundamental right will be protected.

Third, we need regulatory clarity. The lack of transparency in our financial markets went unnoticed by the regulatory agencies scattered throughout Washington charged with protecting the common good. We’ve got the SEC, the FDIC, the CFTC, the SIPC, the OCC, the Fed. At best, this confusing assortment of regulators and institutions was egregiously lax in carrying out their responsibilities. At worst, they engaged in the old Washington game of guarding their bureaucratic turf, instead of safeguarding the public interest and protecting investors.

Many in the financial services industry also either forgot or neglected their duty to act ethically and honorably. This shortcoming was aided and abetted by the creation of financial instruments that allowed lenders to escape any responsibility for the risk of their loans. In the past, lenders had to pay a price if they made a bad loan. Today, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac worked with Wall Street to bundle together all these dicey subprime loans and then pushed them off on investors who didn’t have the tools of transparency needed to assess or even understand the risk.

The current system promotes confusion, encourages bureaucratic infighting and creates incentives for financial firms to cut corners. We need to enhance regulatory clarity by holding the same financial activity to one regulatory standard. We don’t need a dozen federal agencies doing the job badly — we need the best federal agencies to do the job right.

Fourth, we must ensure that consumers and investors are protected. Our regulatory system must protect consumers and investors by punishing individuals who engage in fraud, break contracts, or lie to customers — like the predatory lenders who know you can’t afford an adjustable rate mortgage, but mislead you into signing one. These actions are criminal and the people who commit them should be behind bars. And corporate governance rules will be reformed so that shareholders have a clear say in determining the pay of CEOs and other senior executives. On my watch, the consequences for corporate abuse will not be more enrichment, but more likely an indictment.

Fifth, in cases where failing companies seek taxpayer bailouts, the Treasury Department will follow consistent policies in deciding whether to guarantee loans. It must have well developed remedies for a financial crisis. With billions of dollars in public money at stake, it will not do to keep making it up as we go along.

Finally, the Federal Reserve should get back to its core business of responsibly managing our money supply and inflation. It needs to get out of the business of bailouts. The Fed needs to return to protecting the purchasing power of the dollar. A strong dollar will reduce energy and food prices. It will stimulate sustainable economic growth and get this economy moving again.

These are proactive first steps, and it will take congress working together to solve this mess.

I know Mcain will work in a bipartisan way to solve this, he has a track record of doing just that. Your O does not.

      • Creature of Chicago

It’s 3:40 Eastern time, does he have til the close of business day or til midnight to respond to the suit?

I can’t even believe they didn’t file a motion to dismiss the day after they were served.

        • Pamela

There is already a response that just came out on Citizen Wells website. The Obama camp and the DNC both filed “Motions to dismiss”, as expected. However, I am no lawyer so I don’t know what that means in terms of what happens next. Anyone?

          • just me
            • Hispana

              Thank you.

            • vinnie

It goes back to, why not just show the document and let this dog die. Why file a motion to dismiss or go through the motion if there’s nothing to hide.

          • Andy

Next up this gets thrown out of court. Citizens don’t have jurisdictional standing to challenge ballot eligibility, following a substantial history of case law. It’s the same thing that happened with the suit challenging McCain’s eligibility due to the fact that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone — the judge found that the plaintiff had no standing to sue.

Sorry, Berg has no legal leg to stand on here.

            • jbjd

Citizens do have the right to challenge standing; only, not this citizen, at this time, in this court. (I said when this case was filed, it will be dismissed for lack of standing; ripeness; and jurisdiction.) Citizens of the individual states can file challenges with the appropriate state authority, usually the Secretary of State, charging that the candidate is ineligible under state ballot requirements to be on the ballot. For example, to be on the state ballot for a federal office such as POTUS, the S of S might have promulgated a rule requiring that the candidate satisfies the requirements of the office. However, the period of challenge to the general election ballot has expired in most states. However, some states allow challenges up to the date of the general election.

          • obamaphobe

Wouldn’t it have settled everything if they would have just provided proof of eligibility? Filing a Motion to Dismiss just confirms to me that he has something to hide.

          • Kal

That means that they timed the filing of the motions to dismiss for the last minute in order to delay the whole proceeding as much as possible, and hopefully (from their perspective) until well after the election.

Puts the judge in a tight spot, because such motions don’t usually get heard on an expedited basis.

But of course we can hope these ones will move quickly.

        • Papoose

MEchelle and Drop Dead Gorgeous are in SW Philly today…but no one knows where the big Zip is…I am sure that Joe Biden is in a corner taproom nearby.

      • Jules

I am totally for McCain, but I don’t know if this will play out well. I understand & support the move, but it doesn’t sound like the debate is going to be postponed at this point. What if Obama shows up by himself and gets the stage to himself while McCain looks like a no-show? I don’t know if people in general will understand this and that scares me.

        • cleffnote

There’s no way this can’t help McCain. If Obama shows up for the debates it makes him look like he doesn’t care about fixing the economy.

        • McKatmoon

I would rather have my president as a no show for some damned debate, than a no show for our economy.

          • Jules

God I hope you two are right and good sense prevails. I am just wondering what kind of drive by the MSM is going to do.

            • athena

I agree – Obama looks like an ass. McCain – COUNTRY FIRST. McCain looks like the leader here. Obama looks like a deer caught in the headlights.

              • beebop

It looks just as bad as going to Hollywood for a fundraiser when the economy is heading into the dumper. Average Americans WILL GET IT.

                • 30yrdem-not any more

Not when all the alphabet networks are twisting the facts…ABC edited her video…awhile back NBC did the same to Bush…they are picking our president.,,remember most Americans get their news from alphabet soup..

        • vinnie

McCain will show up, and he will say something about why he wants to suggested a postponement. Barry is probably kicking himself for not thinking of it first. It’s gonna look bad for barry if he starts to trip over his answers and stutter like a fool he is. People are gonna be like “you shoulda postponed”.

          • Chicago Joe

Mc Cain can do the foreign policy debate in his sleep. He actually knows this stuff, unlike Barry, who needs to cram.

      • Diana L. C.

I’ve been waiting for news all day about court. What’s the next step if he doesn’t show? How long can he pospone this?

      • Jess Terr

NObama has to follow yet again.
The American voter won’t miss this visual.
McCain suspends campaign, Everyone waits for NObama to show some fake concern and FOLLOW mccain.
        NObama. NOt ready to lead.

        Country First!!!

    • http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/06/21/lesson-for-the-day-pumas-can-sneak-up-on-you/#more-3176 Rose

HA! Financial Wizard McCain to the rescue! Just scared at the way the polls have been going, afraid he’ll mess up at the debate, trying to look heroic or maybe he’s bored stiff explaining who’s who at the UN (and what it is) to Ms. Palin.

      • VMorris

The poll samplings are bullshit as they are skewed to include people who are more likely to vote for The One anyway.

Bawak O’Chicken was too much of a coward to agree to joint town hall meetings and only would do 3 debates. Too bad that a national financial crisis came along to interrupt his plans.

      • ohio

I’d say that McCain is going back to do the job he actually was hired to do. I know it’s too much to ask of Barky, since he’s just using it as a stepping stone. Obama doesn’t know how to work and he has a bunch of them campaigning for him.I’ll take the leader McCain.

    • Goodbye Repugs

McBusgh has effectively said the Country needs Obama and has suspended his campaign, if only the had the good grace to continue this past November.

      • Duras

Get lost, you brainless idiot. McCain is doing what any responsible legislator would do in this kind of situation: Putting the interests of his country before the interests of himself and his party.

Too bad Barack Obama can’t do the same.

  • http://libland Audacity of Hype

Not surprise Obama won’t go back to the Senate to work, he hasn’t done much there since he was elected why do any work now that the country is in one of the worst crises of the last quarter century. Now he can vote “not present.”

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

Actually Obama will go back and claim credit for anything his colleagues in the senate do.

      • ginaswo still says no Uhhbama

he is like the ‘sidler’ from the Seinfeld episode

    • lark

Everyone hates him now in the Senate anyways. Watch how close he’s going to work with Hillary. He probably will grab her papers from her hand and write his name on the top margin and say, “Here’s my proposal everybody” “Hillary, where’s yours?”

      • arabella trefoil

        lolol!

    • joseyJ

Obama and work?? in the same sentence?
      LOL
Obama has spent his political career playing it safe and campaigning for the next highest office.
Even his opposition to Iraq War funding in 2003 was “just words” since he began funding the war as soon as he entered the Senate.

Please God, save us from this con.

  • http://libland Audacity of Hype

    correction – surprised -

  • Athena The Warrior

    You’re move Barky.

  • http://! Clinton Fan

If McCain is in DC, there won’t BE any debate, even if Obama shows up.

I think Obama has no choice but to go along.

McCain will be speaking at the CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE tomorrow, and then heading to DC.

He’s saying get to work and FIX this mess, and delay–not cancel–the debate.

He wants the legislation written before the markets open on Monday.

    • Creature of Chicago

Holy crap, what’s 0bama going to do with his cliff notes? He’ll never be able to retain all that cramming til the postponed date…

      • arabella trefoil

He’s scrubbing the ball point pen notes off the back of his hand this very minute.

      • Jess Terr

I think that’s part of the sub text. NObama can’t study enough to debate fellow American… let alone foreign enemies. (No, obama, UK is an ally…)
NObama is caught with his pants down, and no t.p.
McCain, the crafty old guy, has NObama by the, well, what Jesse Jackson wanted to cut off.

      • just me

        LOL Creature of Chicago…

have to laugh this GE process is crazy

    • Rob in Chicago

If Obama doesn’t agree to go back to Washington and to postpone the debate, I can see Obama attending the debate with an empty chair labled “McCain”, and trying to score political points by calling McCain a coward, too afraid to debate, or too old and forgetful, that he forgot the debate was scheduled for Friday. I really hope that he tries to pull that crap, as he will have his ass handed to him by an outraged American public if he does. But maybe I give the American public too much credit here, especially if the MSM back Obama, and parrot his swiftboat allegations.

      • Creature of Chicago

I can’t see any of the footage cause I’m at work.

McCain asked 0zero to postpone the debate, but since Zero doesn’t want to, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen as planned. Mac just gave Zer0 the opportunity to do the right thing.

If the debate proceeds as planned then Zero-boy will look twice as stupid, because it shows that John – the adult in the room – can deal with a crisis AND participate in a campaign event.

      • jpatelis

LOL that visual was too much for me. If he did do that then McCain could attend all his townhall meetings with an empty suit in the chair next to him.

    • Creature of Chicago

      Partial text of McCain statement:

  • Perry Logan

    Thank you, John.

And just think–Obama might have to do some actual work for a change. ;-)

  • Shiloh

I can understand why Obama would not want voters watching the two of them working to get something done in the Senate and comparing their effectiveness.

    • Diana

I can’t. I’m sorry. I think this is the perfect opportunity for BOTH of them to show the American people they can put aside their differences to work together for the betterment of the American people. If it were Hillary she’d be standing right there in Washington with John working together for the people and putting aside their differences to think of us. During a time when we need ADULTS in office, not children. Who the hell cares right now if you’re a Democrat or Republican this is about America and the American people, show us you can work together to solve this problem. That’s real “change” and “hope” for this country.

      • Jackie

As a point of fact Hillary and John will get right to America’s work. They will compare their ideas and make the best decisions for America. Their strong voices for the American People will help to calm the partisan nonsense we have heard so far this week.

Obama will try to look smart and puke out sound bites. John & Hillary will try to fix our financial system.

        • Diana

I agree! I am so sick of the tin foil hats on both sides and this partisan BS. We’re the ones that suffer because of it; not them. I’m sick of people on both sides saying, “It’s Democrats fault! It’ Republican’s fault! No it’s NOT, it’s the failure of BOTH to work together. It’s like watching an episode of the Simpson’s. Bart, “Not my fault, nobody saw me do it. Can’t prove anything.”

They’re not CHILDREN in Washington, these are the people we trust/put our confidence in to work together FOR ALL AMERICANS. When they go to Washington they don’t just represent the Democrats or the Republicans in their state. They represent BOTH and all other parties. They represent EVERY single citizen in their state. They’re supposed to be ADULTS. The United States is not some playground where we play let’s see who can be the bigger bully.

It’s both parties fault. It’s OUR fault as well for allowing them to drive a wedge between us for so long. For allowing them to place our identity/who we are on a political party. My party has never defined who I am as a person totally. Nor would I want it too. For placing blinders on and looking the other way when there are problems in our parties. I’ve never thought the problems we face in this country that go unsolved are because of one party or the other. I’ve blamed both sides. It’s time for ALL parties to work together for the American People. For this Country.

      • Boxer Mum 06

Agreed, and she wouldn’t be causing a pissing match on who called who first and who had the idea first.

Barry is now (surprise) taking credit for the recommendations and saying they were all his and McCain is on board with Barry’s recommendations.

Guess Barry is now an expert on economics.

We all have dealt with people like him in the past – I don’t know about you guys but I couldn’t stand idiots that had to jump on someone else’s idea and claim it for their own.

Is this what we want in a President? No wonder Gordon Brown loves him – he will make all the comments and Barry will steal them for his own. He is a parrot.

        • athena

I heard that “McCAin has adopted my plans” Never mind that McCain came out first with his plan while Obama “waited” for the administrations comment. I just want to shake the black off that man. Or shake the skinny off him or the stupid off him. Whatever works.

    • Mr. Natural

Obama’s done basically nothing in the Senate.

      He’s got no mojo.

That’s why he hasn’t tried to lead on a single important issue, like FISA.

      - It would reveal him for the powerless put-up-job he really is.

    • just me

does he know how to get to the Senate?

  • Ginger

They will issue a joint statement, meanwhile the MSM seems a tad upset that they already had their tickets and the hall is decorated….they seem put out. Shows what they think is important.

  • Athena The Warrior

Shame on me. I meant your move Barky.

  • LizfromFL

Everyone would be watching him, he would actually have to make a decision. He would look around and see what everyone else was doing before he decided. He would get his staff to do a poll and ask people whether they would still like him if he voted a certain way.

  • Jackie

I am so pleased that McCain puts the county first. I hope his voice in the Senate CHamber will ring srong with Hillary’s. The Dems in control are trying to make the crisis last so it help Obama. We have to stabalize the banking system becaue this will effect the world’s eceonomy not just ours.

Hey,just wanted an historical perspective. has any other presidential nominee ever suspended his campaign for some time? or is this a brand new move by the maverick? just wanted a bit of history to it, thats all. cos it shocked the hell out of me. :-)

    • Shiloh

I can’t quote when but I’m sure it has been done for a funeral or such but not a national emergency. I wouldn’t call it “some time” it’s only a matter of days, less than a week.

  • Shiloh

Apparently Obama has already said no, but that puts him in a pinch. If he continues to campaign he looks callous and if he also goes to DC he looks like a follower not a leader. I predict team Obama will call this a campaign ploy and the media will chime in. Let’s see what the people think. McCain’s line should be “if I can’t put my job as a senior senator first how can I ask people to vote me as their president?”

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

Where do you see this NO? Please share link(s) and especially video!

McCain is screwing with his head. Obama has been cramming all week for the debate exhausting himself, then McCain switches and throws him off his game making his prep work for naught. This is strategy to keep him jumping and off balance. And McCain presents himself as the great statesman of the Senate. Cynical and brilliant strategy which might work.

    • Boxer Mum 06

It’s like calling a time out with less than a minute to go in a game and the kicker needed to sink the field goal.

McCain is a leader! I think we just witnessed how he will run the country and more so, how he will dicate foreign policy. His terms.

      • McKatmoon

See that Willey, cagey thing that lives inside MCCain, that kept him alive during his horrible years as a POW, is one smart cookie, who adapts and goes with the correct priority in the moment. O, will be nuts over having his “Plans” ruined. He has no spontaneity or ability to act in the moment. He will roar his terrible roars, and cry his terrible cries, but McCain has already said, “Enough, be still”…..Voila, living proof, as we write.

Yep, and now McCain will be the leader on the economy and defense. Smart, smart move.

      • requiredreading

I agree — I’m even getting beyond “sort of okay” to feeling very good about voting Republican for the first time in my life. The critics will say that McCain’s move is only political strategy; I don’t buy it, because it fits in with his history of reaching across the aisle for bipartisan efforts and with his statement that he rather lose an election than lose a war. I don’t have any links but I have been switching MSM channels – one reported that the Obama camp said that there is no reason to cancel the debate and suspend the campaigns; another one reported that Obama will follow McCain’s lead (after saying that Obama took the first step. Flip. Flop.

Another ‘waaah’ response from Obama. McCain says he’s going back to work and they need to postpone the debate.

Reporters are swamping the O camp with requests… is he going back to work? O’s response?… but, but, but waaaahhhh… (Bill Burton) we called him first and, and, and, and waaaah he called back and said yes, he would issue a joint ‘let’s all work together, wishes and dreams’ statement about the crisis…. (I am not surprised to know that O wanted to do nothing more than give a speech nor that they would try to manipulate the situation to pretend they were out in front when he refused to take any position last week.)

I feel like I’m back in the primary with that rather sad response.

  • ziggy

Suspend the presidential debates?! You have got to be kidding me!

There has never been an election when clarifying for the American people exactly where each candidate stands on specific policy issues has been more critical.

    • Mike J.

That may be true, but what do presidential debates have to do with clarifying policy issues? They are usually an exchange of canned, pre-vetted, suitably vague policy statements, not a real insight into what they will actually do.

      • MessyMarcy

Exactly right! What we need to see is them at work trying to solve this problem, not at a debate running their mouths with pre-packaged sound bites. Obama has a problem with this concept because he does not have a clue how to deal with this or any other of the many problems facing the country. If he did indeed call McCain this morning, it was probably just to ask to copy JMcC’s homework.

    • Jackie

THe need to get this economy is far more important than a debate on Friday. All McCain wants to do is delay it so that the work of the people is done.

      What a concept.

    • http://libland Audacity of Hype

It is far more important to take care of this financial mess than to have ego TV air time for either candidate.

      • bethtopaz

Now I’m seeing on Fox News that Obama saying it’s important to have a debate during this crisis.

If it was all that damn important to debate, why hasn’t he taken up McCain on having weekly Townhall Meetings?

    • McHope

Suspend not cancel, short sighted one.

I suppose this goes along with the fact that Obama never shows up to work, never wants to be bothered and your willingness to accept that behavior.

Aside from that, do you have a grasp of where Obama stands on specific policy issues overall after nearly 2 years of his flip flopping? Most people don’t, including his VP. What makes you think that will change in an hour long debate?

    • Mr. X

By suspending his campaign and delaying the debate, it makes it 100% clear where McCain stands on the issues. Only Obama will have a problem with this.

      • Rob in Chicago

Really, I can’t believe that any O-Bots would be foolish enough to come to this site and say that the debates are more important, but now we have EXHIBIT “A”: ZIGGY !!

Since when is campaigning/fund raising more important than this country? Or in representing and protecting the very people you want to trust and put their confidence in you?

      • TexasBuckeye

Apparently, Obama thinks campaigning is just as important. He’s speaking to the country now.

He says “If I can be helpful, I’m prepared to be anywhere I need to be.” and “We both have big planes with our slogans on them, they can get us from Mississippi to Washington pretty quickly if that becomes necessary.”

If he can be helpful? It seems he can’t and isnt.
If it becomes necessary? If? becomes?

HOWS THAT FOR PRESIDENTIAL DECISION-MAKING SKILLS?

What an incompetent putz. There isn’t a bigger idiot on this planet.

    • Darryl

They can clarify it by putting in their two sense and helping to bring about a solution by doing the job they were originally elected to do. In the meantime you may learn something about how congress works. That is where the real solutions are made, not in the white house.

Its a perfect way to show what they are made of.

    • George Smathers

There has never been an election when clarifying for the American people exactly where each candidate stands on specific policy issues has been more critical.

Going to do the job voters of this country entrusted to put our elected officials in Congress to steer us through the biggest financial crisis not only this country, but the global economy has faced since the late 1920′s, before TV was even demonstrated as a laboratory prototype and Hoover and not FDR was president, or continuing to play politics and making speeches gives me that critical clarification of where the candidates stand on specific policy issues.

    • Jess Terr

waaaaaaaaaaaah…. look at the actions, moron.

Of course, Gov. Palin can presumably still remain on the trail, which means that the damage to his campaign would not be all that great. For Obama to reciprocate it would mean leaving his campaigning in the hands of…Joe Biden.

  • http://panmetron.blogspot.com PanMetron

Drudge has a little, probably not more than you’ve all heard:
MCCAIN SUSPENDS CAMPAIGN TO FOCUS ON ECONOMY; WANTS DEBATE DELAY

Brilliant move for McCain on several counts.

#1, he can actually lead in the Senate and do what Cheney failed to do: quell a Republican revolt.

#2, Obama is the indecisive follower, McCain the decisive leader. Obama has no choice but to follow McCain’s lead, but unlike McCain Obama doesn’t actually have anything important to -do- in the Senate.

#3, McCain throws Obama off his game. Obama was in his isolation pod “preparing” for the debate for 3 days, now that’s interrupted. Anytime you can control the rhythm and interrupt your opponent’s plan, you get inside their head a little.

Great move, both as a leader and as a candidate – the best McCain has made since he picked Palin.

    • cynic

Just when I was thinking no republican political move could be more calculating and cynical than the selection of Sarah Palin…

      • Mr. X

This whole mess is just too convenient for Obama. The power brokers let McCain win the Republican nomination because they consider him expendable and a “loose cannon.”

But whatever John McCain is, he is unquestionably patriotic in the best sense of the word and he is unpredictable.

It is the right move for these candidates to focus on the economy now. It is another super move by McCain to take the lead in doing so. McCain’s decision is another indication of superior judgement by an old, YES OLD, warhorse who is not going to be outflanked.

    • Perry Logan

Another possibility is that a group of Democrats got sick of watching Republicans win elections through cheating, and being called geniuses for doing so, and decided to use the Republicans’ own tools against them.

If the Democrats are really playing hardball, I’m worried. They’re sure to be much better at it than the Republicans ever were. We might not see another Republican President for 50 years…

Yet McCain will go forward for his country and Obama will slither into DC with his slime trail visible to all but the MSM.

just scored another point with what has been out there for either candidate to do — cancel campaigning and getting back to D.C. to do the job he’s got. Now, a couple of days ago when I simply noted here that McCain had scored a similar strategic point, I got blistered for it.
This used to be a good blog for discourse about strategy and tactics, not cheerleading or “hate.”

You THINK he scored a point (none / 0) (#42)
by Big Tent Democrat on Wed Sep 24, 2008 at 02:03:38 PM EST

I think it looks like a stunt.
You have been predicting doom for Obama for a while now.

No doubt you think McCain has been winning the past few weeks. Mark Halperin and you are on the same page.

    Meanwhile, the polls say otherwise.

In many ways, you resemble Jeralyn in her conviction that Palinpoalooza is bringing McCain down. Just in reverse.

Always good to how the oppo thinks. That kool-aide has a nasty, angry side effect too.

    • Leisa

Cream City was one of my favorites over there. Smart and balanced commentary reliably came from him or her.

I hardly recognized the place by the remarks you posted. Why is it Obama supporters get so ugly? It is chilling.

  • http://anvp.typepad.com/soldier4hillary/ soldier4hillary

Okay can someone explain something to me if there able? I am listening to CNN and I dont know the womans name but she was attempting to explain why Mccain is suspending his campaign. She stated that the reason was “dire” and that it could affect people getting money out of the banks, benefits etc etc. Here is the question if anyone knows or can tell me where to get the info.

In the military we have this savings program that you can put money into. I have been putting into it for the last ten years. Does anyone know if the current financial situation will affect this?

    • Jackie

No Your military saving plan is secure. It is not backed by these banks but directly by the government. It has absolutley nothing to do with Wall Street bad loans at all.

      Thank-you for serving.

      • TorchWood

        Seconded.

    • Postmaster

soldier4hillary: is it FERS? Federal Employee Retirement System?

      • Jackie

the Military Savings Plan is different from FERS but it is safe. It was never invested in Investment Banks.

It is secured by the US government. You will not loose your money.

  • benny

Folks, there is no comparison here. McCain is truly presidential material. To make a decision like this takes resolve unheard of. McCain has constantly surprised me. He is truly for his country. He cares a damn about the presidency, if the current economic probs are not sorted out. wow, what chutpah!!! We got ourselves a real president, folks.

  • blue

    “Now it begins.”

    No one could have predicted.

  • wheelz

    WOW!!!! What a LEADER!!!!
    John McCain is COUNTRY FIRST.
This must be the guy we elect for America’s sake.

  • vinnie

I thought I read somewhere today that McCain was talking Romney and other CEOs about their thoughts on the economy. I think it’s a good move. I don’t think Americans give a sh*t about the debate this week given that doom and gloom is hovering over wall street.

  • typewriterstreaming

Breaking off Drudge – Obama insists debate will go on.
    wow.

    • http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=PALIN Mary Cusack

He paid a lot of money for those debate classes. dosesn’t want them to go to waste

    • VMorris

Fine. Barky can go debate himself. After all, he’s taken both sides on every major issue.

      • meileen

“Now that’s a debate I’d like to have, anytime, anyplace.”

      • Creature of Chicago

        What a dumbass.

If the debate happens as planned, McCain will be able to work into his presentation the efforts he made to resolve the bleedin’ crisis. You just know he’ll take a jab at his “esteemed opponent” preparing for his face time rather than addressing what 0zero himself called our era’s Great Depression.

And 0bie will be standing there with nothing but his wee-wee in his hand.

      • Annie Oakley

        LOL! Bothways Barack!

    • Ginger

      He’ll be all alone.

    • Dr. Kate

wow. and like the “man in the arena”, McCain will come into the debate having saved the economy (ok, exaggerating) and taxpayers’s money…and beat barkys ass like it was high school.

the other option of course is that barky debates himself…you know, pro fisa, con fisa…there is a lot of material there! :-)

  • IronMan

God Speed John McCain! Brilliant decision!

    Country First!

  • NewHampster

I heard rumors that McCain controls the voting majority on the upcoming vote.

    Awesome

    • waldenpond

He does. The Dems told Obama not to take a position and the Dems are in public saying they need to know where McCain stands. They can’t get anything without McCain.

I believe McCain will support a top-down bailout instead of a bottom up re-financing. I will be disappointed in any politician that supports a top down bailout but I live in CA which is going blue so my vote isn’t relevant for the GE.

  • pal3

    The “October’s Suprise” is coming…

  • arabella trefoil

Biden and Hillary should go back to DC as well.

Sarah Palin can stay on the campaign trail because she is not in the Senate.

  • ziggy

I guess now McCain won’t have to explain during a public debate exactly what he meant a couple of weeks ago when he insisted that the fundamentals of the American economy are sound

    • http://libland Audacity of Hype

Well now Ziggy, I’m one of the fundamentals he was talking about because I’m earning a paycheck, putting it in the bank, paying my mortgage and my bills …. I’m a fundamental…….

      get it?

      • McHope

And the debate is on Foreign Policy.

    • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

The fundamentals of the US Economy are not sound… If you are a SOCIALIST.

Maybe you should go to Webster and check the meaning of fundamental.

“one of the minimum constituents without which a thing or a system would not be what it is”

      • matchles

There is far more that is fundamental to the US economy than just the workforce and “American Ingenuity”. Much of this financial crisis happened because fundamental parts of our economy failed by any definition. You may want to figure out what would be included as a fundamental before your Red Scare Tourette’s acts up again.

        COMMIE… excuse me.

        • Creature of Chicago

The Gross Domestic Product has not decreased since 1991. And even then it was a very small decline.

According to the spreadsheet, the GDP increased by 2% in 2007, last year for which figures are available.

    • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

By “fundamentals” he meant the workers of America and their ingenuity, but I guess you like taking things out of context when it suits you.

      • Obama FTW

It’s cute you believed that :)

        • Jackie

          the fundamentals

          Unemployment Rate

          Prime Rate

          Rate of Inflation

          Rate of Job Creation

          GDP Growth

OK, the rate of unemployment is 1.5% off what is considered “full employment”. THe Prime Rate is low.
THe Rate of inflation is running at 3.7% (not exactly horrible)
THere are still more jobs being created than lost for the year.
THe GDP is growing at a slow rate but it is still positive. Get your fucking facts straight.

The Wall Street issues are bad–no doubt–but they are not the core of the economy–this has more to do with keeping the monitary system sound around the world.

  • For Impartial Journalism

On Fox – The McCain statement was announced and about 20 minutes later Major Garrett received the message from Bill Burton saying Obama had called Mccain first.

I think this is BS. Burton had to do a CYA move. The fact that the statement from Burton didn’t come until 20 minutes after McCain’s statement leads me to believe that Obama didn’t really call McCain first.

Of course, Obama will spin this . . .

  • just me

      Funny!

  • Darryl

The Obama camp will try to make it seem that he is chickening out. Then they will hypocritically call on him to talk about the issues.

The irony is that he is actually DOING something about the issues. The Irony will be lost on those whom support Obama. Why? Because they aren’t interested in issues. They like how Obama talks. They are voting for Obama because hes a smooth talking Black man. Thats it.

McCain needs to burn the midnight oil. I suspect he will show up for the debate and in the mean time debate in senate.

This will take the thunder out of Obama’s “chicken” statement and a make McCain look better.

    • George Smathers

This is exactly what I was thinking. Barky will be standing at his podium at the debate looking at his watch, be in full theatrical makeup and wearing a clean pressed suit, and then in comes McCain, with tie loosened, shirt unbuttoned at the top, sleeves rolled up, jacket thrown over the shoulder and says “Sorry I’m late, I just had to clean up a financial crisis in the Senate on my way over here while my esteemed colleague the junior senator from the proud State of Illinois spent the day in the makeup room getting ready to preen for the cameras. Now, first question, please.”

  • JP49

Bravo Senator McCain. Of course Senator McCain called it right, he has to be our next president. Obama needs to go back to whereever he crawled out from.

  • typewriterstreaming

every single Democrat for Obama in my office is going CRAZY. They are calling McCain a coward.
I am trying to recall why I was a member of this party.

    • Darryl

That shows you that they aren’t interested in figuring out what is wrong with america. They are voting for an Icon.

I suspect McCain will get media in senate and also show up to the bate calling Obama’s foul. Watch.

McCain will make Obama seem like he over reacted.

    • beebop

You were a member of the Old Democratic Party. Sigh. Either it was different or it took this incompetent coward to expose the real Democratic Party. I am praying it was the former.

  • lark

Everyone hates him now in the Senate anyways. Watch how close he’s going to work with Hillary. He probably will grab her papers from her hand and write his name on the top margin and say, “Here’s my proposal everybody” “Hillary, where’s yours?”

    • Mr. X

You’ve just summed up EXACTLY who Obama is.

  • JP49

Obamabots are the dumbest of any people I have ever had the displeasure of encountering.

  • Steve1

Soetoro AKA Obama, “Hey John I’m to busy running for president. Pracing around all across America. Too busy, can’t bother with that little old crisis.” Typical Soeotoro action! If this phoney dude wins-this is what we can expect. Hey why doesn’t he just produce his original Birth Certificate-why file a motion to dismiss?????What’s the problem?

    • Creature of Chicago

      VERY good point.

The question could have been settled once and for all.

      • Dr. Kate

and, he will be busted. Unless his motion for dismissal contains all the papers, the Judge cannot dismiss it.

        obama will argue minutae– the date for depostions is wrong (spt 31); elements of the case are wrong (maybe his name on the ill state bar);

judge cannot dismiss until the papers are produced. And the DNC and FEC will also need to fork up the documents.

        he is stuck. October surprise?

        • Creature of Chicago

          Dr. Kate -

          WHAT?

I didn’t know he was required to produce the documents in any case.

Holy Cannoli, thank you for that tidbit!

Then can the authenticity of the docs be challenged, for instance if they look digitally created or altered?

  • John Smith

I was socked when I read the head line and at first I thought it was a joke. This election is one of the craziest elections I have ever seen. It is a true roller coaster but I guess the problem is bigger then people think. The idiots on capital hill are giving speeches and pointing out how it is not their fault that this happened. It is perfect for McCain to go in there and get his thing done. Of course Obama will not follow suit. They will do the same thing as they will always do. Play politics.

Obama wants the debate to go on as planned. He thinks they can work on the economic crisis and debate, too. I would think he would be relieved that the debate could be postponed, because John McCain will surely expose Obama for the inept loser he really is.

Obama sites his qualification for being president is that exact thing- campaigning.
That’s all he has done or wants to do-throw himself parties.

THAT would be PERFECT!!!! Palin would wipe his whiny skinny butt all over the floor! obama might even break down and cry!!!! Stamp his feet!!!!

  • Shiloh

I’m not surprised at the Obama response. He had to try to triangulate it somehow. He couldn’t say yes and he couldn’t say no, so he is trying to say yes but. McCain’s answer should be that if a bill is passed tomorrow fine, the debate can go on, but if not he will be in DC working on what is most important.

  • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

What needs to be done in addition to the monetary rescue, is institute regulations to prevent a future mess.

A massive fraud was perpetrated by the management of all the financials that these subprime loans and other poorly secured debt were strong.

I look forward to the FBI investigation and jailtime for all including the CEO’s of Fannie and Freddie.

It is every bit as evil as what took place at ENRON, but on a much larger scale, and enabled by our own congressional banking committee.

    • Shiloh

Yes but everyone knows Fannie and Freddie have been in democratic party control all along.

      • Dr. Kate

yes, and that spells trouble for the dems, they don’t want this highlighted so they can continue it. Now tell me again who is Bush’s third term?

  • fif

This is quite a Top Gun move by the ole fighter pilot. He really does have a maverick spirit. Poor late to the show Obama will be uhmmming and uhhhhing for 3 days before he decides how to respond. Age is nothing–who’s got the younger spirit here?

Obama doesn’t want to postpone the debate–he’s spent days holed up prepping. Meanwhile, McCain is at the UN, meeting with Clinton’s Global Climate Initiative and campaigning. Again, who’s the younger, sharper guy?

  • http://democratsforrealchange.info Dr. Bobbi Anne white

Obama wants to do both at the same time. However, Obama was never doing anything in the Senate anyways.

Go to CNN and vote in their poll about whether or not this was a good move by McCain. It’s on the front page and I’m sure the Obots will overrun the results.

    • notodisenfranchisement

well, you know, let them overrun the results because they’ll look like idiots – yeah, a Friday night debate is soooooo much more important than our country.

      • Rob in Chicago

As I just voted at the CNN website, “a political gimmic” was at 69% while “an effort to help the ecomony” was at only 26%. Either large segments of this country’s population have gone insane, or the O-Bots have gamed the CNN poll, most likely a combination of the two. How sad. :(

  • pal3

Obama should go on vacation. He would be in the way…

    • notodisenfranchisement

oh, i so wish that BO had decided to prepare for his debate in the Virgin Islands…he would’ve been caught with his trunks down.

      • Rob in Chicago

STOP THAT!! My keyboard is not vomit proof.

  • Shiloh

The position Obama has been forced into is that this is not such a big deal and both can be done at the same time. OK just leave the debate contingent upon the progress congress makes. Maybe Obama will want a definite timetable for withdrawal from DC!

    • McHope

Oh but it IS a big deal and Obama has been beating that drum louder than anyone so he could place blame on McCain.
Chicken little did nothing to help but went on day after day attacking McCain on the economy. Then after seeing McCain took action and presented a plan, he copied it and said it was his own.
McCain’s website has statements released by each candidate that are dated. It is clear beyond a doubt that Obama’s words and proposals mimicked MCCain’s.
Now this crisis is not deserving of anyone’s full attention?
And again I ask, why on Earth would Obama push to debate McCain on Foreign Policy????????

  • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

If a lunatic was on the loose and harming himself and others in his way, we would shuttle him off to the hotel happy for a long stay.

The same needs to done with the management and ops policies of the financial institutions.

  • ziggy

Just what sort of dangerous message does McCain’s political dodge telegraph to extremely nervous Wall Street investors?

It’s a political ploy that isn’t without a serious immediate risk. It could easily heighten fears and precipitate a disasterous market reaction.

Investor psychology is a tremendously unpredictable market factor at the moment. John is gambling with far more than an election. You call that sort of political risk-taking leadership?

    • Mr. Natural

Beats sitting on his laurels, like Obama’s doing.

    • Shiloh

I see. Senators wanting to set aside their ambitions to work in the senate for the good of the country is risky. Right. Try and sell that.

      • ziggy

I’ll tell you what’s being sold: The idea of issuing a $700 billion blank check to the same guys that got us into this mess to begin with, and the idea that we’ve got to get the whole deal done by Friday.

McCain just took the bait. Now he’s also selling the idea that immediate, ill-considered action is imperative.

What’s this need for immediate action without careful deliberation?

My guess is that the Bush administration doesn’t want this scheme to be looked at too carefully. They don’t want Congress or voters to have time to think.

        • Karma

How can McCain deliberate if he isn’t at the discussion?

McCain has already stated he didn’t want to give them a blank check, so it is clear that he is thinking about the plan.

        • Creature of Chicago

Debating the bill is part of the deliberation process.

That’s what Congress has been doing all this week. It’s all on the congressional record or even on C-Span for chrissake, nobody’s trying to hide anything.

The reason he wants the whole deal done by Friday is that the markets are still nervous in case you haven’t noticed.

Some of us have ACTUAL money invested…

          just sayin’

          • Ted Kennedy’s Swim Coach

Yep. McCain supporters have jobs, save our money, invest our money.

Obama supporters don’t care about the economy. They want to make sure that they get the next welfare check and sponge off the government handouts.

    • meileen

      HUH?!

      WHAT?

No wonder Obama supporters are hated.

    • typewriterstreaming

One great reason for both of them to go up there is both sides are stalling to make sure they are siding with their candidate. Barky doesn’t want to go because he can’t bring his Teleprompter.

    • fif

His “political dodge” is “dangerous?” What are you smoking? How does postponing one debate and the campaign for 3 days affect world markets?

      Get your priorities straight.

      • ziggy

Why the rush to hand a $700 billion blank check over to Paulson by the end of the week? McCain just endorsed that degree of urgency.

What aren’t they telling us? Somebody is about to turn back into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight?

Maybe some big, highly influential players who made some very bad bets are going to lose a lot of money, and maybe their game is going to be exposed in the process?

There’s something we’re not supposed to find out about here.

I prefer Congress take their time. They should familiarize themselves with the game and the stakes and the players before doing a damn thing. I can forego that new car loan or that new home mortgage for a month or two while they check things out.

        • Postmaster

Ziggy, just to let you know…Obama IS A SENATOR! He is paid to work as a Senator, but I can understand how you would miss that as he has been a PROFESSIONAL CANDIDATE for the past 8 years. Get a life Ziggy, not everyone is like Obama who has an ulterior motive for everything he does.

          • ziggy

So, I take it that means you know what the urgency is, and why McCain believes it’s important to do something as quickly as possible?

Someone should explain this to the American people. Maybe that’s what John plans to do.

BTW, Obama has been on the job in the Senate a lot more than John McCain, if the comparitive number of votes they’ve cast is any indication.

John tops the list for missed Senate votes.

I can see why Obama thinks he can handle both debate and a meeting in Washington at the same time. After all, he thinks he’s God and could be everywhere at the same time. The man is so arrogant.

I hope McCain comes out as a leader in this, while Obama comes off as a self-centered politician.
McCain is stepping up in the interest of the country, Obama is not a leader.

  • Ginger

    Obama: statement proposed

    McCain: action first, talk later

McCain end-runs around the Speechifier and makes him put up or shut up, in front of the world.
Better decide if your a Senator or a Presidential Candidate, Barry.
Will he answer the lawsuit and remain a Senator, if he is even qualified to be one? Or will he go for broke and act like any sort of leader and go to work? Sounds like Barry will be crying all the way to whick ever he chooses.

The best of all possible scenarios: Barry votes on the “plan” they agree to, several police officers show up soon after, and arrest him on a warrant for failure to appear in court charges…..
    Oh, please, please, please.

I think it’s a great move by McCain to go back to DC and work on the details of this FINANCIAL DIASTER.

This vote might be the vote of our lifetime, so why not spend the time where the need is CRITICAL.

McCain has my vote! …and the deal cut here with this bill, will be significant for our lifetime.

  • benny

We have a warrior in McCain. no longer do I see him as an old, dignified dude. I see him as a natural born leader. A fighter-pilot, ready and bold enough to take on any obstacles. We got our president, folks.

    • standard

in lieu of our real president, who was run over roughshod by dnc.

  • 30yrdem-not any more

I thought they should have went off the trail Friday but the UN thing and all…They are still waiting to here more from Obama…If I were them I would say listen we are tired of waiting for your many responses…they get one ..report it say we are awaiting to here from Obama AGAIN!

I am glad McCain stepped forward first. That is what leaders do.

  • Read my lipstick

I think Barky should go ahead and have the debate anyway. He can debate himself on all of the issues that he has been flip flopping on.

    • notodisenfranchisement

someone earlier said they should send Palin to debate Barky…maybe they can talk about the Bridge to Nowhere…

then, I thought, if the campaign is suspended that means Palin can’t campaign either, debate or not.

      • Mr. X

No, Palin in a governor. The other three are senators. Palin has no requirement to suspend her VP campaign.

        • Shiloh

No it is a joint campaign and it is suspended, period.

    • fif

      LOL! Good one.

He could also fail to decide on anything.

      What do you think?

Well, I don’t know, what do you think?

      Let’s ask Hillary.

  • fif

I just voted in the CNN poll and it’s 70% “political gimmick.” The Obots must have their panties in a bunch over this move. LOL! They get so freaked out by real leadership, not recognizing bold initiatives from their candidate, the Ambivalent Plagiarism King.

    • Creature of Chicago

I think CNN is a “political gimmick”.

      So there.

      ;-)

    • Darryl

You can hack those polls easy. Online polls are completely unreliable.

Polls must be random and forced upon people to be acurate.

  • moi61537

There are times when doing the right thing is more important. McCain is showing his “Profile in Courage” and living up to the campaign slogan: Country First. Oddly, Obama is living up to one of McCain’s commercials: Obama first.

  • Shiloh

Look, Obama was trending up fast in polls and they wanted that momentum to continue. Crisis for America is good for the Obama campaign so naturally they want more of it not less. What McCain has done threatens to derail the Obama momentum and that is all Obama is thinking about.

    • moi61537

Maybe so, but it could also be that McCain really does put his country first and takes his job, as a Senator, seriously.

      • thenana2

Look at it this way the problem does not get solved, what kind of country will we have?

McCain has done the right thing.

        One can debate anytime.

  • Above My Pay Grade

I think this is both the right thing to do and a good move politically. It puts 0bama on the spot. If he continues to campaign and does not go to D.C. he will look like he does not care or does not know what to do (both are true of course).

If Barry does go to D.C. it will appear that McCain is the leader and Zerobama is the neophyte follower and “not ready to lead”.

If Barry insists on going on with the debate, McCain should send Governor Palin in his place. If Barry refuses to debate her, it will look like he is afraid to debate a “dumb”, “cute”, “unqualified” “girl” from Alaska.

If she holds her own, (and I think she would) it would be a HUGE victory for McCain/Palin. Even if she didn’t do great, she would have a built in excuse that she had no time to prepare.

  • http://me414.wordpress.com/ Divine Democrat

Obama just called it “political tricks”.

    • Shiloh

Excellent. Very high backfire potential right there.

    • Firefly

For obama, “political tricks” means “Waaaa waaaa waaaa – (stamping feet) no fair! – I was gonna do the same thing as McCain – as soon as I could manage to get 100 advisers together and we could think of it.”

    • beebop

Well, if there is anyone alive in politics today who knows a political trick when they see one it is certainly barack insane zeromama.

  • Shiloh

CNN knows how their polls will go and that one was designed to get the ball rolling on “political gimmick.” Let’s see if the people think it is a political gimmick for their leaders to set ambition aside and lead. If that is political gimmickry then we are in real trouble.

  • standard

    it’s called leadership.
    Obama will follow suit, right?

  • typewriterstreaming

From Politico: “Reid: McCain return ‘would not be helpful’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in a statement that would be unlikely to go out without the Obama campaign’s approval, dismisses McCain’s suspension:

This is a critical time for our country. While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis.

I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op.

If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”
Harry Reid is an Obama dirt bag

    • VMorris

Like Harry Reid has accomplished anything of note as the leader of the Senate. If Harry says it, I guarantee the exact opposite is true.

    • wodiej

Reid is an incompetent boob…he wouldn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. Dem congress hasn’t done shit the past 2 years and he thinks they can handle this? LOL….RIGHT.

    • Above My Pay Grade

This from Reid, the moron who said the other day of the mortgage meltdown that in Congress, “No one knows what to do.”

Since Harry doesn’t know what to do and Barry obviosuly doesn’t know what to do, I am thankful that John McCain is suspending his campaign to get a solution done!

    • jpatelis

      Unbelievable!!!

Just heard Obama talking and saying I have been in touch with Reid, Pelosi and others and he basically said call me if I you think I am needed.

Slam dunk in favor of team McCain.

    • Urban Hillbilly

McCain is a United States Senator! For crying out loud, where does Reid get off? I, for one, appreciate McCain going to work on this. I am smart enough to judge whether it is a photo op or not.

Let Hillary be Senate Majority Leader…please, oh please, oh please…

    • Boxer Mum 06

I guess that is what took Obama so long to make a statement. He had to make sure it was in sync with Reid’s speech. It was almost identical.

Hannity is having a great laugh over the “if you need me, call me and I’ll be there” line.

What a joke! The economy is in turmoil and a major crisis which of course if partisan now and what does Obama do? Make it a playground game.

    • beebop

Wait a minute. Yesterday it was a “no-go” without John McCain’s buy-in. So now that he wants to be a part of the process, he’s not helpful??????

Do they even remember what they said?

Good God almighty. I may have to vote against Sherrod Brown on principles alone.

  • Shiloh

Going to DC and being watched and compared in action to McCain scares the hell out of Obama. he won’t do it and we’ll just have to see whether he can get away with that or whether he is shooting himself in the foot. Great theatre. I wish I didn’t care so much.

  • VMorris

    Obama is an asshat.

  • McKatmoon

There is already a backlash being reported on FOx, by people writing in wanting to know why the debate is more important than getting the economy hammered out. The O campaign has said they can do both, and they were the ones to ask McCain first; MCCain is also suspending all ads. The o campaign says it is only a two hour flight, why can’t MCCain do it. This is really making people whom are concerned about the economy, pissed.
I mean didn’t McCain offer several town hall style debates, prior to this one and Obama couldn’t be bothered? Also, the money being lost setting up for this debate, and according the the National Debate Foundation(or whatever their name is)they are going ahead with it ..yadda, yadda yadda, they do this for the people.
Sorry no sell, get the f-ing economy in a place where we don’t have a sellout worry over the weekend folks, is it that hard to fogure out what the real priority is? Obama looks like an idiot more than he ever has.

    • Above My Pay Grade

McCain should immediately offer to send Sarah Palin in his place to debate Barry. It is a no lose situation. If she flops, oh well…she is only the VP and had no time to prepare.

If she does well, Barry is humiliated by the “unqualified” “small town mayor”.

If Barry refuses to debate her he looks like the small, scared little man he is. He will meet with Chavez or Ahmadinejad without preconditions, but he is afraid of a Hockey Mom?

      • Firefly

Barky – the first crap out of his mouth: “I talked to McCain.” “I initiated the call.” “Me me me me me!”

It doesn’t get more childish or more “politics as usual” than that, barky!

    • Boxer Mum 06

The o campaign says it is only a two hour flight, why can’t MCCain do it.

Doesn’t this sound like his first take on Iran? It’s only a small country, not like the Soviet Union.

This guy has no sense on how to measure real concerns and problems.

Half the country could be on fire and he would say, oh I’m busy doing such and such, it’s only 1/2 the country. Figure it out among yourselves and call me if you need a referee.

  • wodiej

I’m glad McCain is getting back to the Senate. Once again, Obama has to think about it awhile before he can figure out what to do…..uh, I, ummm, ah…

McCain needs to go in there and make sure this bill does not benefit any of those effing CEO’s. Now something coming up on Fox about it benefitting illegals!

  • http://me414.wordpress.com/ Divine Democrat

So, what Reid is saying is that they need leadership at this time and Obama’s not a leader? Interesting.

    • typewriterstreaming

      ha! great point.

  • Diana L. C.

Just as I was losing hope because I felt that somehow the financial situation would hurt McCain more than O, McCain did what he usually chooses to do–Do what he feels is right!

I don’t care if you’re religious or not. Maybe you just believe in the Beach Boys. Let’s all send “good vibrations” McCain’s way.

    • wodiej

      Amen…done!

  • Shiloh

Wow, the two positions sure have crystallized rapidly. A. The crisis is important and this is the time for leaders to lead not politic vs B. It isn’t necessary, it’s just a McCain gimmick, there’s nothing either of them can do to be helpful. let’s see how people come down on that. It will probably determine the election.

  • Darryl

McCain needs to issue a response to Obama: “If you want to do both, then why aren’t you in senate now?”

  • McKatmoon

At his rate Obama is going to talk everyone to death, before election day.Gee, talk about the problem or go to your job and try to help fix the problem ..oh what to do what to do. Good God.

  • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I see McCain has even ordered all ads pulled for the moment. From Politico:

    McCain taking ads down

Aiming to prove how serious he is about addressing the financial crisis, John McCain has instructed his staff to take all his campaign commercials off the air, a spokesman tells Politico.

“As John McCain said, now is the time to put partisanship aside and come together to do the work that the American people expect,” said Tucker Bounds.

McCain aides are now in the process of contacting TV station across the country to get their ads taken down, according to Bounds.

Asked how long they would go dark, Bounds only said: “We’re taking our guidance from Sen. McCain on that.”

    • Darryl

God this so great. McCain is handing Obama the ball to prove his worth. Obama can’t do it. LOL this is so great!

    • George Smathers

Going back to the Senate to do his job in a time of grave crisis to the US and global economy is the best ad for McCain I can think of. It speaks volumes as to character, motivation and intelligence, more so than any 30 second prime time spot could.

  • http://me414.wordpress.com/ Divine Democrat

We all know what Obama would do now if he got one of those 3:00 am phone calls….hang up, because he needs his beauty sleep for his photo-ops.

    • csuzeq

Obama wouldn’t even answer that 3 AM call. He’ll let it go to voicemail.

  • matchles

Boy if this is how McCain runs a campaign, I can’t wait to see how he governs. Isn’t multitasking part of the president’s job description?

“Hold on, I can’t deal with education right now, we have a war going on. I can’t be bothered with immigration issues, there is an energy crisis going on. Forget energy for a moment, we have a problem with the deficit”.

Will somebody please give this guy a piece of gum and see if he can chew it and walk at the same time?

    • moi61537

      What a patriot you are.

      • matchles

        I am

        • Mr. X

So if people are losing their homes, you’d continue to paint it? It’s called priorities, and Obama doesn’t have them.

          • matchles

Please tell me ONE thing this bailout does to help people who are having their houses foreclosed. The only way those losing their houses will get any help is if the Dems are allowed to get some of Obama’s proposal in the bill.

            • beebop

Sorry sweetie. I don’t give a good g-damned about people who bought houses with nothing down … and couldn’t afford them. Aw. Call me old fashioned. No one FORCES YOU TO BUY A HOUSE.

              • Creature of Chicago

How can you debate this issue with someone who never had to reconcile a budget? Who never heard of a sub-prime loan until their local 0borg e-mailed them the talking points?

That’s exactly right, no one forces you to buy a house, but the greedy realtors and mortgage brokers sure enough used buyers’ fear and greed to get them to sign impossible loans. And yes, some of these buyers thought they were going to fund their retirement by flipping the house to the next sucker. Oh well they played a game of real estate musical chairs, and the music stopped before they could cash out.

        • Duras

          You’re also an idiot.

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

So, you suggest a Hoover-esque approach wherein, like Obama is suggesting, just keep campaigning and debating while Congress and the President struggle with the economic crisis that whoever wins will be stuck with?! Somewhat like the house is burning but lets keep watching the football game on tv. Pretty stupid don’t you think?

      • matchles

No, I’m suggesting what I said. That he do both at the same time. It was McCain who acknowledged that he hadn’t even raid the governments 3 page bailout proposal.

        http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=97180&catid=45

What work is he going to do? He doesn’t have a proposal of his own, he isn’t on the committee, all he is going to do is vote on the bill, something Obama has been flying back to do the whole campaign.

        • rapp

Obama or Mccain have not been to Congress to read it. They both only know the basics of it. Mccain has stated his position numerous times and Obama took some of them after he stated it. Read up or watch videos.

    • http://me414.wordpress.com/ Divine Democrat

Oh boy, the Obamabots are in full swing. Is Obama paying you guys double time for breaking news trolling?

Don’t forget, matchies, it was Obama who said that he can’t hold onto a piece of paper, he needs someone to give it to him a few minutes before he needs it because he’s so disorganized that he’d lose it. Just sayin’……………

      • matchles

Oh boy do I wish. What do I do to get paid to stir you guys up?

Oh yes, saying that he misplaces papers and is disorganized is akin to McCain saying he can’t do two things at once. You go ahead and keep on this line or argument it may be fruitful for you.

    • Darryl

Why don’t you stick to the issue: The economy. What is Obama doing for the economy.

      All you have is smears.

      • matchles

Well he’s had this to say on the crisis so far.

        http://discuss.epluribusmedia.net/node/2647

His 7 points are far more than McCain has had to say on the topic considering McCain hasn’t even read the proposed bailout.

        • Above My Pay Grade

Did Franklin Delano Raines write that for him, or was it Jim Johnson, or Penny Pretzker maybe?

Go away troll, you are in over your head almost as deep your candidate is.

    • VMorris

Debates are just words. Actions speak louder than words. Obama is full of words, and empty on actions.

Does this guy every do his duty as a Senator? Ooops. Dumb question. Barky has been too busy running for POTUS to do his job.

    • Ginger

When your house is on fire do you decide what color you’ll paint the walls after you do repairs or do you put the fire out?

Sounds like John already has the hose pulled out, turned on and is not only putting out the fire, he’s calling the fire department for back up.

      • wodiej

        HA…..Great analogy!! Right on sister!

      • matchles

Yeah that analogy has been used already. The problem with analogies is they only extend so far.

But the bailout as it stands is putting out the fire only to relight the candle inside. While Obama’s plan (scroll up, it is linked there) is put the fire out and install a fire alarm so it doesn’t happen again.

As for your analogy, why can’t you put the fire out while deciding how you rebuild? As I said in the OP it is called multitasking.

    • McKatmoon

A debate is really, not that important, considering the over exposure of particularly, the Den, and the length of time this election has gone on. As I said on an earlier thread, it has consumed our “news” and the information and thus the ability of the American people to stay informed and involved. This convoluted drivel we have been subjected to for almost two years has taken it’s toll, on what is important and what isn’t. A an hour debate, is just not on my list of most needed information at this point. I would like to see a plan and place and some strength given to our market before the weekend. It’s called, national security, Matchles. You know a country can be lost by losing it’s financial market.

      • matchles

A plan can be put in place AND the debate and campaigns can continue. What is McCain going to do? Bang the gavel at the reverse auction? He isn’t writing a proposal. It is easy to go back to vote from ANYWHERE in the country. Saying both campaigns should drop everything and go “work” on this crisis is myopic.

    • Firefly

OMG – I hope barky comes out and says EXACTLY what you just said, bot – pissy, jealous, petulant, angry, all-politics-all-the-time LOSER!

      • matchles

He said it a little more politely than I did. It’s probably your skewed view that makes my comments seem so pissy and jealous. Too bad not everyone in the country sees things like you do as evident of the latest polls. McCain down 9 points nationally? Ouch…

    • Above My Pay Grade

      Go away Obamabot troll!

McCain is putting his COUNTRY first. Barry Zerobama as ALWAYS is putting HIMSELF first.

Multitasking has its place, but when you have a catastrophic economic crisis on one hand and a political campaign on the other, you put aside the campaign and FOCUS on the crisis. That is, if you are a PATRIOT like John McCain and not a self serving anti-American piece of dirt like 0bama.

      • matchles

Got any “I Like Ike” or “Where’s the Beef” tag lines you wanna throw out. You sound like a walking talking point (an unfortunate rhyme, I apologize).

    • notodisenfranchisement

let’s see McCain offered to do more than 10 townhall style debates – I guess Barky couldn’t multi-task for those..

      • McHope

        LOL, right.
Personally, I think McCain should go to Washington, get the job done, get on that plane and proceed to hand Barry’s butt to him in the FOREIGN POLICY debate.
One other thing this situation does is raise the expectations of Obama in that debate now that he is hanging his carrer on it.

      • matchles

McCain claims his strength is town-hall debates. Strategically why would you allow your opponent to only do debates in his preferred style?

    • matchles

That all you guys had? I would think you’d have some better arguments than that. Well I bid you adieu. That was sad, you guys got owned. Go ahead and get your last words in now. You can do so with the satisfaction that I won’t be reading it and responding, helping you feel like you’ve won the argument.

Until then, watch the news, all three networks see to be saying this was a bad move on McCain’s part. A few days ago it may have worked but now it looks like a reaction to the polls.

      • Ginger

Here’s your hat…..don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

This the most incredible election cycle I’ve ever witnessed. If any other politician pulled this, he/she would immediately be accused of pandering [I'm sure the Obamatrons will say just that]. But this is vintage McCain. For good or bad, he will make the bold moves and take the bull by the horns. I’m glad there’s still someone out there willing to a make a sacrifice and take a risk, which could clearly be against his own political interests.

Dare I say: McCain looks positively Presidential!

    • Obama FTW

Dare all you like, you’ve already managed to convince yourself McCain has a chance.

Bold move my ass. McCain took one look at the mass of negatives today and chickened out.

McCain hasn’t cast ONE VOTE since April 8, why the sudden change of heart now? Flip-flop!

            • Creature of Chicago

Someday when you grow up, you will be able to recognize a true leader.

Senator McCain is currently displaying leadership at a time when our country needs it. There’s nothing funny about this.

A significant percentage of the working public is invested in 401k’s through their employer. These citizens will be able to recognize the difference between leadership and an empty Chicago Machine-tailored suit.

But if this financial crisis “bemuses and amuses” you, it is certainly your prerogative to feel that way. As it is your prerogative to throw your support behind Senator Cipher, junior (D), IL.

      • McHope

Obama never could multi task. Let him eat his waffles sweetie.

And the sudden change of heart is based on the fact that there is a large crisis to face right now and he is needed in the Senate to do his job due to the lack of resolution at this point.
How one sided can you be?
Is there nothing that transcends the all consuming Barack for you?
You are in fact implying to hell with the country, hurray for Barack.
        Ass backwards.

      • destardi

Multitasking is speaking on the phone, while you’re driving.

Hmm…let’s see how presidential Obama’s words are going to be in the ads following this move by McCain. All the O-bots are freaking out. Calling McCain a “chicken.” If I’m not mistaken, Hillary challenged Obama to SEVERAL debates which he declined, and McCain challenged Obama to TEN townhall debates which he promptly declined.

The only chicken I see then, is Obama. Faced with the prospect of doing a hostile townhall setting in which he would be divorced from his teleprompter, he refused.

So Fox sasys Barry says no – debate goes on.
    What a freak.

    • VMorris

So what if McCain is a no show? Mr. Unity insists on doing it his way.

Is Obama going to fly back to Washington to vote and then go to the debate or is he going to stay where he is and continue cramming?

  • God & Gun Clinging Country Boy

Not Presidential….Obama talking about the crisis.

  • educatedwhitewoman

I don’t believe that McCain did this as a cynical ploy. I will never forget him standing behind the surge and walking through the airport carrying his own luggage. The nation was screaming that all was lost in Iraq and he said he would rather lose an election than a war. Country first.

  • McKatmoon

What should be obvious to everyone, it doesn’t take a bombing for our country to be in crisis, they come from all venues, and this is a big one, the financial imbalance, possible loss of stock and security, being sold out to foreign interests. If it gets stuck in partisan land, we will suffer for a long time. O and the lock step bots may want to discover that crises, require action. You don’t put a fire out by yelling” hey fire, go out”! You call the fire department, the professionals and you do your best to stave off the flames with the buckets of water, and the hose.
Shades of Nero, this O campaign.

    UPDATE from McCain…
    …WOOHOO….excellent statement.

  • Shiloh

McCain should say – fine, I’ll decide Fri whether to return for the debate. Obama can come to DC or do whatever he wants. Keep taking actions and it leaves Obama stewing.

Obama doesn’t want to go to DC because he’s in the middle of a children’s book about a goat.

  • Rah-Rah

Haven’t posted before… have to say:

McCain puts country first – again – and for Obama it’s a big CHECK and MATE.

Obama is out of his league.

  • Patrick

As I watch the polls slide towards Obama, I wonder what is wrong with those who cannot see the forest for the trees? What is it that allows a person to fully put their own selfish needs in front of a greater good?

We all, at one point in our lives or another, do things out of self-love. None of us are perfect. But a vote for Obama at this point in our nation’s history is almost an unconsionable act of narcisism. “He promised me money in forms of income redistribution!” (Even though he never follows through on any promises). “I want to be part of a movement!” “I want to not be a racist so the media loves me!”

All the reasons, all so obvsiously wrong, so false and so patently disturbing on a HUMAN level. And there’s John McCain, once again saying “To hell with this, my country is falling apart around me and I’m supposed to go to Mississippi to debate a neophyte on foreign affairs? I think NOT.” “But John, it’s your strong suit, your STRONG SUIT, you’ll clobber him in this one, everyone knows it, you can regain your footing in the polls!”

    “So.

    What.”

John McCain, as always, COUNTRY FIRST.

    Take care,
    Patrick

    • ziggy

What is it that allows a person to fully put their own selfish needs in front of a greater good?

Ask the guys on Wall Street that the taxpayers are supposed to hand over $700 billion to by the end of the week, based soley upon their insistance that doing so is necessary.

Ask the republicans who deregulated the financial industries.

      • http://divinedem.blogspot.com/ Mary Ellen

Ask the Democrat majority in the House who ignored McCain while he tried to pass legislation to put a stop to this speeding train. Just sayin’….

        • NoBama08!

          To be quite (Barney) Frank!

        • ziggy

What specific legislation are we referring to? What happened to it?

      • Patrick

I’d rather ask the people to blind to see the many character flaws that riddle the humanity of Obama. That is a MORE important question in regards to the future. Again, the narcisist deflects, expects something for nothing, and puts his head in the sand. Enjoy the bitter taste.

I agree, dee4hill. I McCain will be the real “agent of change” in Washington. He’ll serve his four years and then Hillary will serve her eight and all’s well that ends well. We’ll have to see what we got after 2020. Shit, it will be 2020 when Hillary finishes up and the vision of this country will surely be so much clearer! :)

The debate is important because so many people have never seen the two debate at all. But what is going on with the banks is more important to me…the banks effects us all, all won’t watch the debates.

Obama’s proposed to cancel the foreign policy debate scheduled for Friday!? Of course! He’s scared for people to find out he’s nothing but an empty suit. He’s been studying all week and he probably still has no idea what’s going on in the world! Poor Bwak!
What? Oh, it was McCain’s idea to cancel the debate. Um… This proves that McCain has more integrity and patriotism in his little finger than Bwak has in his whole lazy body! Obama just wants to parade around in front of cameras while McCain wants to lead and find a solution to the problem. Bwak is toast! Country first!

As an aside, does it strike terror in the heart of anyone else that the bailout proposal is only 3 pages???

It scares the living sh_t out of me.

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I too was very surprised to here that Paulson went begging for a blank check with just three pages of detail. Sounds like Obama in his audacity or arrogance.

      • VMorris

Exactly. To paraphrase Paulson, when confronted about adding something to stop the million dollar severance bonuses, in effect he said he didn’t want to add anything that would make Wall Street balk at accepting the bailout…

EXCUSE ME? As far as I am concerned, Wall Street is in no position to negotiate. They want each tax payer to fork over $2300 to bail them out without any strings, without taking any responsibility for the mess they created. What are their options? Are they threatening to sell out to other countries for the bailout if we don’t write them a blank check?

God forbid the CEOs who fucked up lose out on an obscene severance bonus!

With the severity of the issue at hand and the pivotal role McCain and obama play, it is right for them to go work like they are getting paid to.
As the man i want as next president i am very proud mccain once again put his country first over petty ambitions to have a hand and lend a critical voice to this plan for our economy.
    Leadership matters.
    McCain has it in spades.

Plus, the debate is on foriegn policy, the same debate obama’s campaign said is a huge advantage for mccain.
So oboys cut the bullspit. McCain offered to have debate or townhall meetin every week.
mccain delays to ensure our markets do not collapse. obama refuses to do meetings because he is a wuss

  • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

Obama is pulling his senatorial equivalent of voting “Present”. He’s not showing up for the vote unless the vote is “close”. That way he can say he didn’t vote for it if things go wrong and he can say he ‘supported’ it if things go right. It’s an old trick that only the SLIMIEST of politicians pull. And Obama is no exception when it comes to being SLIMEY.

He’s also letting everybody else do the work. Again.

    • 30yrdem-not any more

Yup, if his vote isn’t needed he won’t vote so if there is a mistake made no blame goes to him…that is how he has always done it. He has a problem this time..All of America is watching.

I don’t want a bunch of stuff added to this…that is just going to cost us more….

The benefits will eventually trickle down to the people footing the bill.

  • Deep Truths

The idiot just lost this race. McCain sees that there is deadlock, hesitancy, doubt on the members in Washington about the bailout. John wants to get there to oversee it and be part of the solution. Obiwan – who suddenly has an interests in debates when he refused 10 town hall debates – wants to debate instead of showing leadership when its desparately needed RIGHT NOW.

    Check an Checkmate.

    • Obama FTW

Do you double as a whirling dervish?

McCain hasn’t cast a single vote since April 8. Not one. Not even for the GI Bill.

McCain is scared. Did he even give a press conference after he raised the white flag?

      • moi61537

Raised the white flag by someone who was tortured and starved for 5 years. You gotta to be kidding.

        • Obama FTW

          Noun. Verb. POW.

          Thanks for the reminder!

    • Can you see the irony?

So John is finally going to cast a Senate vote?

It’ll be interesting to see exactly what he’s willing to vote YEA on. The Bush administration has put forward a proposal for governmental intervention into the workings of the free market that’s farther to the left than anything any democrat has ever proposed.

      • Duras

Gee, maybe that’s why McCain thinks it’s more important for him to be in Washington right now than mugging for the TV cameras in Mississippi?

        • Obama FTW

Why now? This crisis began last week, why didn’t he go back to help then? Doesn’t he trust the President (George W Bush, just in case McCain had forgotten), Paulson, Bernanke et al to get the job done in his absence?

They managed to pass the GI Bill without his help/hindrance.

Of all Senators, John McCain has been the most absent. There have been 643 votes taken in the current Senate session: McCain has missed 412 of them. McCain has not voted in the Senate since April 8th. Since March, he has missed 109 of the last 110 votes.

    • obamaphobe

However, on the most critical of issues that affect us all, Obama is absent.

But you’re not disputing McCain’s leave of absence?

  • waldenpond

Obama on. I’m not listening, just reading the ticker at the bottom, ‘he called first’ and ‘no mortgage reform’ in this legislation, ‘debate should go on as planned’ ‘pres going to have to deal w/more than one thing at a time’ (that one is bad, but I’m sure the extreme Obama sites will think that is wonderful, just as they would think O was smart to go back to work) Just what is it Obamacrats would think important enough to go back to work for?

  • benny

Is Obama gonna go to the debates and bark to himself? I guess so. I’m sure that he loves to hear himself speak. Maybe Rev. Wright will give him some inspiration and passion.

  • mimi

0bama wants the economic crisis to continue.

    That’s why the powers-that-be manipulated/expedited it.

The longer Americans teeter on the edge, the more people will think it’s best to vote for him.

And as usual, the msm is complicit in this.

  • DancingOpossum

Filing a Motion to Dismiss just confirms to me that he has something to hide.

Wrong, filing a motion to dismiss is just the normal course of action when you believe that a case filed against you has no standing and/or no merit. It means you don’t have to waste time and money answering going to court for something that has no basis.

Many MANY reasons to oppose Obama, but the birth certificate thing is a really nutty one and it will be good if the dismissal of the court case puts it to rest so real issues can get attention.

    • obamaphobe

The issue would be put to rest with legitimate documents proving eligibility. It would prove that the lawsuit has no basis. Then, yes, we could move on. Until then, LIMBO.

  • Ginger

Will Barry debate himself and actually come to a position on anything or will he just stand there and cry that no one showed up to hear how cool he said the stuff he practiced for 2 days.

Why does he want to debate foreign policy and ignore American crisis that is occurring now? Is he brain damaged or just plain stupid?

  • Duras

Now we see the difference between a true statesman in John McCain and a shamelessly ambitious politician in Barack Obama.

The US government is on the verge of sticking the US taxpayers with responsibility for as much as $700 billion dollars, and rather than be in Washington to represent the interests of his constituents and do the job he was supposedly elected to do, Barack Obama apparently thinks that getting some face time for himself on national TV is more important.

“A new kind of politics” my ass.

    • Obama FTW

“In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to become president. I was sixty-two years old when I made the decision, and I thought it was my one shot at the prize.”

  • Peggy Sue

This was Obama’s 3 p.m. call. And he failed miserably. I’m listening to the One’s press conference now. He’s basically saying: call me if you need me. Hah! Sorry the multi-tasking argument doesn’t work. Setting priorities is more important to me. When the house is burning down you don’t continue to talk on the phone. Who is this guy????

Incredible. If this performance and lack of leadership doesn’t wake people up, then maybe David Axelrod is right about voters being braindead: feed them anything and they’ll slurp it up gladly.

So where are we now? Obama debates himself?

    Perfect!

    • Obama FTW

The multi-tasking argument does work. If McCain can’t even do two things at once in a campaign, he can’t do it as president.

What did McCain say in his press conference? I missed it and want to make sure I know all the facts.

  • benny

A very brave move by McCain. In my view, a game-changer. no other presendtial candidate has ever done this.

    • Obama FTW

You may be right, I can’t think of another presidential campaign that’s blown every possible chance since the convention. McCain sure proved me wrong on that score!

  • http://www.sugarnspice.typepad.com Sugar

Now, the media will do all they can to spin this to infinity, but the American people are not stupid. How can the media offer story after story about how much of a crisis we are in and then say that this is a gimmick from McCain? lol Old John Boy has them going crazy. He won’t be the only one with a grey head after this is all done because he has them worried now.

    • Urban Hillbilly

Good point. The viewing audience will have to square the contradiction. Is it a crisis or not? And, then, they will have to figure who they want to be President in time of crisis.

Is McCain doing an end-around with the press?

Man, I can’t believe the arrogance of Obama and his people. His response to McCain’s proposal was essentially …

That ain’t gonna play well in Peoria. While McCain is putting his campaign on hold because his country needs all hands on deck in Washington, Barack Obama intends to go on with business as usual.

Purely from a political standpoint, this is a winner for McCain.

  • Postmaster

Wow, did I read that right? Harry Reid issued a statement saying Obama and McCain aren’t needed, nothing they can do? WooHooo this guy gives a whole new meaning to the word stupid. • Mr. X

I think the debate will go on. I think McCain will work something out before the debate and will arrive just in time. That would leave the entire subject of the economy in McCain’s hands with Obama having no reply. McCain can just say that when his country needed him, Obama was a no show.

  • OhVoter

    Obama’s statement:

“If you need me call me” and I “The One” will give you some WORDS of encouragement. What more does the country need than our “joint STATEMENT?” WORDS from “The One” will solve everything. well didn’t they want to draft Winnie the Pooh as Secretary of State?

It’ll be the Loony Toon Cabinet.

McCain should know Obama is going to lie and twist things to make him look bad…Looks like Reid wanted McCain yesterday now he calls McCain and says stay away…

  • Deelee

I know how to get Obama back to Washington (if he can remember the way). Just tell him that McCain can’t make it and he’ll have to debate Sarah.

  • Peggy Sue

Color me stupid, Mimi. But I still think the American populace can think on its feet. We don’t need to have the MSM to tell us that McCain’s position and decision is bold and demonstrates leadership. The hell with the political consequences when the risk to the entire country is so huge.

McCain has said repeatedly that he’d rather lose an election than lose a war. A financial war is underway in DC right now that will affect all of us, every single citizen, possibly for generations.

I admire this move. It’s bold and risky, primarily for John McCain’s political future. But he’s willing to take it.

This is the sort of man we need at the helm, right now, in this particular moment in American history.

I can’t help but feel that HRC would have done exactly the same.

The choice has narrowed, but in my mind, it is very clear. There are political animals and then there are leaders. Obama is the former; McCain the latter.

  • VMorris

Right now, I don’t give a crap about whatever votes McCain did or did not show up for before. This one is crucial, probably one of the most important in my lifetime.

    McCain = 1 Obama = Below Zero

The jury is out on how the undecided vote will see this. They are the only ones in question since we know the decideds will feel their candidate is right.

    • Duras

The undecided voters will see this as on candidate taking the situation seriously and fulfilling his responsibilities as an elected official while the other one apparently thinks business-as-usual is A-OK.

This will be a big winner for McCain. Mark it down.

  • Paul3triple

McCain just swung the mo back in his favor.
Obama said call me if you need me.
Well, McCain did call him and they DO need him.
Mccain obama and biden are 3% of the senate.
If something does not get done the market will continue to freefall into collapse and EVERYONE is going to have a rough time.
I do not agree with the plan currently on the table, but a PLAN must be enacted.
I think they should suspend the capital gains tax, pass an energy bill as well.
The markets need somewhere to go business is stagnant because there is nothing to invest in.
Energy independance would create a market boom much like the tech boom.
Among other things. Alot of stuff needs done. Suspending the cap-tax and cutting the corporate rate would accelerate growth and increase capital in the markets quickly.

  • Liberty Belle not for Obama

Obama is total B.S.! Saying the President needs to do more than one thing at a time – and yet, Obama himself was holed up in Tampa, FL, not campaigning, but preparing for the damned debate on foreign policy, to be held over at the U of Mississippi – Ole Miss. In other words, focusing on the debate about foreign policy, NOT the financial bail-out.

Excuse me – Who was only focused on one thing at a time, and not the crisis at hand?

Before I heard any of this news today, I wondered how Obama was going to vote on the Bail-out Package being proposed. After all, he couldn’t vote “Present” this time if he was “Absent”. I.e., it bothered me that the debate “just had to go on” before the campaign moratorium became news.

Insinuation: John McCain can’t handle doing more than one thing at a time because he’s too old. Bull puckey!

    What a hypocrite!

  • Brendy

Obummer will not go to D.C. to help with the financial crisis NOR will he dare to vote one way or the other. He’s waiting for the rest of the politicians to figure out this mess and however it turns out, Obummer can then say – if it’s a disaster, he can claim “Oh, if I had been there, I would’ve voted againt it”, or if it’s a success, Obummer will then say “Yes, had I been there I would have voted ‘yes’, also”. Obummer is a GREAT Monday Morning quarterback!

What gets me is, Obummer and McCain are STILL Senators – that’s how they’re getting paid, that’s their job so why won’t Obummer REPORT TO WORK???

  • Deep Truths

Okay, send Governor Palin. McCain has experience and legislative skills in Washington that are need to ensure the financial crisis is addressed.

BRILLIANT. Obama wants a debate, send Sarah ’cause John’s busy saving the country. McCain’s spokesperson says that its 99% chance that John will miss the debate. That stupid Debate Committe says the debate is still on. Wow. Good theatre here. Economy is dire straight crisis. John to Washington – Barack to U. of Mississippi by his lonesome.

Wait 24 hours for the reverse from Obama.

so much for bipartisanship and not trying to politicize an event.

How sad, look at what Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid had the nerve to say in responding to McCain’s call. Sure, he thinks McCain should stay away from Washington. Who’s politicizing this crisis Dirty Harry?

McCain also urged that organizers of Friday’s presidential debate at the University of Mississippi to postpone the event.

“I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself,” McCain told reporters in New York. “It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.” Watch McCain’s announcement »

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a statement saying the presidential debate should go on and that McCain’s negotions should not be a “photo op.”

“It would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy,” the statement said. “We need leadership, not a campaign photo op.”

“If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now,” he added.

  • IronMan

    Lindsey Graham,speaking now on FOX:

The future of our economy is more important than a debate on friday night. We can have the foreign policy debate next week. John McCain will be in Washington to help find a solution to this crisis.

At the end of the day, what we need is people in Washington that can get something done. Senator McCain wants to suspend his campaign, come back to Washington.

John McCain has been trying to debate Senator Obama for months, for months. What we want to do now is help protect America from a financial crisis.

We’ve been begging Obama to debate us for six months. What we need is to answer the call with action and not allow a financial Pearl Harbor to happen.

The country is experiencing a financial crisis.

We have 40 days left to debate. We may not have but a few days left to protect the American people from this financial crisis.

    Quick Summary.

  • MoniQue

O poor little baby Obama wrapped in his little blue blanket, he worked so hard on his cheat-sheets for the “debate.” Gosh and all that “training” on how to speak without a teleprompter. Now, he’ll have to start all over again.

    Cry me a river.

NoBAMA, NoWay, NoTime, Not in this lifetime.

  • McHope

Just now on FOX Senator Graham I think it was made some excellent points.
When asked about the need for a President to multitask ( the criticism hurled at McCain by Obama), he pointed out:

.McCain has been begging Obama to debate for months and he’s refused.
.There are still 40 days left to debate, this crisis will escalate in the next few days.
.And the best comparison of all, he pointed out that if either of these men were President and over seas with a Foriegn Leader he would hope they would have the good judgement to come home and address this crisis that Warren Buffet has called the economic Pearl Harbor.

  • wodiej

What is the BIG HAIRY ASS DEAL w delaying this debate anyway?? McCain said a plan needs to be hashed out by Monday latest. They could have the debate early next week. Obama doesn’t know what to do about the crisis so he can’t help so he is just pretending that the debate is more important.

Obama hasn’t done the right thing his entire life. I doubt if he even knows what that is-just like his supporters. He has rounded up all of the arrogant, vulgar, immoral people he can find and brainwashed them w “hope and change”. Seeing as how Obama has no qualifications or experience to even know what to do in any given crisis, he nailed people that were easy pickings. The smart people are supporting McCain and Palin.

  • John House

“Suspending campaigning” is different from “suspending a campaign”. So I don’t know why this is a big deal, other than to make Obamatronic heads explode yet again, LOL.

  • tfitz

If the debate goes on, and it’s not with McCain. I won’t be watching it.

  • EyesOpen

The real debate in the country is actually happening in Washington DC over this baillout. If there is a no show finger to be pointed on Friday, it will be Barack’s absence on Capital Hill. Recylcling the cowardly ‘present’ vote by the Junior Senator from Illinois.

  • Less

A Cause Greater Than Self…McCain is a man of his word.

  • http://democratsforrealchange.info Dr. Bobbi Anne white

There are a lot of things going on in the equation right now, and it’s not just an economic problem. Russian warships are in the Caribbean and Ahmadinijad is in the UN saying that this is the end of the American Empire. These are warning signs, that Obama is totally oblivious to as he crams for the debate Friday night. Maybe he can find an honor student there to debate.

  • Wisewoman

Obama is the most self serving person I have ever seen. I tell you people he is the Bush III in this campaign.
