Open Thread! Financial Crisis Disrupts Campaign [Update]

This thread is closed. Please go to the new post above, “Obama: Call me if you need me,” to continue this discussion.
………………………………….

This afternoon Senator John McCain announced he was halting his campaign, suspending ads, requesting delay in Friday’s debate, and returning to Washington tomorrow to help address the financial crisis in the Senate. Senator Obama has claimed “me too” but only in timing. He still wants to hold Friday’s debate as schedule. The unfolding events today are fast paced and will continue so during the next few hours. How they both response deserves close scrutiny.

Here is an open thread for your comments, news updates, and discussion. If you have news to share, please include a link and quotes or video. It will be interesting to see how the mainstream media and blogsphere handle this.

UPDATE: Below the fold is John McCain’s statement via YouTube:

And here’s the link to Memeorandum.com‘s coverage of the rush of news stories and blog posts on this breaking news story, and both candidates’ responses.

  • AliasJohnDoe

From what I understand, Obama called McCain to make a joint statement today. But Obama didn’t want to go to Washington and work, or cancel the debates.

McCain wanted to make a joint statement, go to Washington and work and solve the economic crisis we are in. McCain also thought it was a good idea to postpone the debates till the problem is solved.

McCain puts America first. Obama is in Me Me Me mode.

    • No way No Mccain

Uh nice try. Obama called McCain not the other way around. Of course you did not watch Obamas response. The debates do not need to be cancelled. If McCaiin can’t do two things at once we really are in trouble. The only thing they agreed on was issuing a joint statement.
McCain is down in the polls so why would he want a debate? McCain puts himself first. What a dweeb. Obama took questions McCain did not. Now who has something to hide?

      • obamaphobe

And of course, whatever “The One” says, you believe. McCain spokesperson said Obama left a message for McCain with no topic, and never spoke to him. Truthfully, I could care less what you believe. Action has to be taken, and Obama prefers to cram for a debate on a subject he knows very little about, then to save us all from financial ruin. McCain equals action…Obama equals talk.

        • Diana L. C.

Obama is curently being paid tax dollars to BE A SENATOR. Tha is his first job, especially for something like this.

Only idiots would understand it differently–or perhaps only Gen X and Gen Y slackers.

Harry Reid, damn his eyes, said it was just a publicity stunt on McCains part. I say that is not the John McCain we know.

He told McCain not to come to Washington, that he wasn’t needed or wanted. I just bet he doesn’t want him there. He wants to meet in secret with Nancy, to hatch some draconian scheme. Cover their asses too.

            • tek

that is simply outrageous. Who is Harry Reid to tell a senator he is not wanted in Washington.

            • obamaphobe

Reid told him the day before that it was critical that he be involved. Changing his tune today…whatever helps the Messiah I guess.

          • Ted Kennedy’s Swim Coach

Obama forgot he is being paid by our tax dollars to be a Senator. He would rather go to Hollywood fundraisers with Lindsay Lohan than serve his constituency.

He threw Lohan under the <a href =”http://madinthemiddle.blogspot.com/2008/09/welcome-to-underside-of-bus.html” bus.

        • Diana

Here! Here! Obama doesn’t want the debate delayed because he’s already studied that set of questions. Can’t use the same ones in a new debate it would show they used favoritism. Which when it comes out they’ll justify with McCain got the one’s from Saddleback, even though we know that is not the truth. Which means he’d have to study and come up with new answers. Amazing isn’t it? Obama has fallen on his face in every single debate. Just look at his debate against Keye’s it isn’t something new. It’s posted on Keye’s website. Plus, Keyes was carpetbagging and had 0 time to prepare for the debate. He has the questions, or he’d be agreeing with McCain let’s postpone. He “KNOWS” he fails at actual debates and it harms him every single time he has one. But all of a sudden he’s excited for a debate? Uh, yeah OK. I’m buying into that one.

      • fif

LOL! You obots are really twisted. Obama “took questions?” That’s a good one! Obama has been one of the most sequested candidates in history, rarely taking reporters questions. And let’s not forget: Obama is the one who refused to do 10+ Town Hall discussions WITH McCain around the country, because he couldn’t handle it. Without his teleprompter, he’s lost.

I heard some nitwit on the radio say, “McCain was scared to debate.” Yea, this is the fighter pilot who was shot down and survived beatings and torture for five years. He’s afraid of Obama! Your Kool Aid distortion is impenetrable.

        • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

Obama is the one who refused to do 10+ Town Hall discussions WITH McCain around the country, because he couldn’t handle it.

And now all of a sudden, debates are soooo important.

This ass clown has his priorities a little to far up his clown ass.

          • Diana L. C.

He may forget his memorized answers that Axelrod programmed him with if he has to wait too long.

          • stodghie

i get this picture in my mind of some skinny kid about to get a reall whooping. along comes some bruiser behind him and all the other kids scat. he stands there thinking he is all that and they are really scared of him. he talks big and the big bruiser just shakes his head. that’s obama! he runs from debates and then it’s “shoot, i was counting on that debate” all the while thinking thanks goodness that didn’t happen. obama is such a wanker.

          • http://insightanalytical.wordpress.com InsightAnalytical-GRL

This first debate is important for Obama…at Ole Miss, the audience probably will be giving him the cheers, and brush off McCain. And who knows who will show up outside the hall to protest…
The media would spin this like crazy to make it look like Obama ‘won’ no matter what happened.

I hope the McCain crowd go after Obama on “doing his job” in the Senate…you can see the ads coming on this one…
Obama also won’t be live at the Global Initiative…will be via satellite…he’s too busy campaigning or cramming…

I also hope McCain NAILS Harry Reid on the contradictory statements about being there…didn’t it apply to Obama, too??

If you can’t get this covered in the media….then make an ad!!!!

        • tzada

And this is his asinine statement.

23 Sept: CBS: Obama May Not Return to D.C. for Bailout Vote
(CLEARWATER BEACH, FLA.) – Although Barack Obama argues that the financial meltdown is an “emergency situation”, he said today that he may remain on the campaign trail, rather than returning to the Capitol, to vote on the $700 billion plan.
“Look if we get a consensus and everybody is popping champagne – then I will probably be going back to campaign with folks who are having a tough time in places like Ohio, and Michigan and Pennsylvania,” Obama said adding, “If this ends up being a close vote or a vote where the outcome is an open question then obviously this is a top priority.”..

      • http://nobho.blogspot.com/ Johnny at Work

Obama said he called McCain in the AM, but never actually spoke to him until McCain called him in the PM.

There was no conversation when Obama called in the AM. In the PM McCain told Obama he would announce going to Washington, suspending the campaign, and postpone the debate, and asked Obama to join him.

It was a good hour before Obama reacted, asleep again.

      • Less

Obama said he was on the phone with Paulson all day. Obvious lie. He was at a rally and Paulson was to busy to be chatting with Obama on his blackberry. Obama lies!!! Don’t fall for it fool.

        • csuzeq

So is that why Paulsen can’t get things moving better, because Obama keeps harrassing him and wasting his time?

Obama, if you don’t want to be of help then get out of the way. Stop bothering people and go wave to your adoring fans, what few are left.

      • wodiej

well I guess Obama can’t do two things at once either because he is not suspending his campaign no? I rest my case pea brain pod bot. Go do your goose stepping drills.

      • Duras

That is utterly idiotic. Why would Obama call McCain and suggest that they suspend their campaigning and then refuse to do so himself?

Are you really so stupid that you can’t figure out that it was McCain who called Obama?

        I guess maybe you are.

      • Postmaster

McCain can out-distance Obama any day of the week. Has everyone forgotten that these candidates are both senators and have a job to do? Debates are important, however, I would think that the country is more so. John McCain has more character than Obama could ever hope to have……

        • beebop

0bama was just on television. Bottomline is it is more important to run for POTUS than to solve this problem.

      • Cocky Wacko’s Mamma On the Stairs

So Oblockhead’s desires, and yours by proxy, are more important than the economy. Nice try, obamabothead, but no sale.

      • candymarl

I agree. Who called whom first is high-school. Obama is a Senator who wants to be President. But he can’t put aside that goal temporarily even though America is threatened with financial meltdown?

Also, some are calling McCain a coward for wanting to cancel the Friday debate to take care of the nation’s business. McCain has asked repeatedly for Town Hall meetings with Obama. Obama refused. Obama will only show up for scripted debates.

        • cocky whacko

The point is Obama tried to handle this out of the public eye and exercise some bi-partisan leadership. Instead, McCain decided to make a unilateral announcement and politicize the process. He has really pissed in the well here. This move will increase the partisanship and make it less likely that we get a deal. It is hard to know whether we are really facing a financial crisis, but if McCain thinks we are and he pulled this stunt, then I think it was one of the most irresponsible, selfish acts I have ever seen in politics. It just really hardens my belief that this guy is dangerous and should never be president.

          • beebop

You have probably been too busy studying for driver’s ed to understand the nuance of the situatio. But yesterday, the word was that the Democrats would not buy into any plan NOT ENDORSED BY JOHN MCCAIN and that he needed to make a decision post haste. Then you have people on the right measuring his entire career — past, present, future — on the strength of this one event. So. Let me ask you this … is his input important or not? And. Is anyone AT ALL clamoring for input from the junior senator from Illinois? Not that I heard ….

            • cocky whacko

I see you have read the McCain statement put out by his campaign. Good for you. The reason Democrats were saying that was it became clear McCain was not committing to any bill and was going to run a populist campaign against the Bush/Democratic Congress bailout of Wall Street. The Democrats did not want to play and said if the fate of the Country is at stake, we should work out a true bi-partisan bill. So, instead of working behind the scenes, like Obama, he decided to drop a political bomb on the negotiations. If this is really as important as some analysts say, then McCain has acted in a cowardly and cynical fashion. He has taken every opportunity to find some political political advantage at the expense of the public good.

      • SJ

What difference does it make who called who, if Obama is busy saying this is a national crisis then he should be in Washington trying to fix it, is that not the right thing to do at the moment?

      • DAB

Not wanting to debate because he is down in the polls doesn’t make any sense. He should actually want to debate in order to gain ground, so you argument is specious. I think that his response is typical McCain and seems genuine to me.

        • cocky whacko

He knew he could not win unless he changed the dynamic. You see him doing the same thing in picking Palin. In both cases, he we was very irresponsible. He did not care about the country, but only about winning the election.

      • BJinChicago

You are spinning this. McCain has asked Obama for a series of Townhall meetings and debates, but Obama would have none of it. McCain is putting duty first, something about which Obama hasn’t a clue. It looks to me like Obama has been really practicing the last few days and is afraid he will forget the answers he has been rehearsing (no telepropmpters).

Obama is being paid by the government to be in Congress, not run for President. McCain recognizes his primary job is bringing resolution to a devastating problem that not only hurts our finances but also our national security.

McCain took Obama’s “statement” and effort to grab the news cycle, and shoved it up his ass. Simply and decisively.

That’s why your boy wonder sounded a bit “testy” and whiney in his availability/break from cramming for the debate–he was PLAYED, and he knows it.

      • tek

You are so mistaken on so many points. McCain is down so he should WANT a debate. Obama is a miserable debater. Obama is trying to trivialize what is an unprecedented crisis in the lifetime of most Americans. He wants both of them to participate in the bailout debate to make sure Bush isn’t pulling a fast one over on the taxpayers. Obama wants to stay on the campaign trail where he has nothing to do but bow to applause.

And better learn to read. The first poster said Obama called McCain, so what’s you petty little point there?

      • hummingbirdv

Oh My. “if McCain can’t do two things at once…” you mean like talk and think at the same time without a teleprompter. Please, let’s not confuse the willingness to roll up your sleeves and FOCUS on a critical job as not being able to multitask.

The real problem is that Obambi hasn’t been in the Senate long enough to know how to be a real Senator and get some work done. John McCain doesn’t have that problem I applaud him for caring enough about the American people to put EVERYTHING on hold and handle this.

If Obambi cared anything about anything except himself he would do the same.

      • http://ohmyvalve.blogspot.com/ Shtuey

No Way No McCain; If Obama could do two things at once he would have convened the Subcommittee on European Affairs to examine NATO’s current role and position in Afghanistan. He admitted to being too busy running for President to do so…please shut your hole. Obama called McCain to make a “joint statement” because your asshat candidate can’t come up with one original policy or thought; that might make his head implode.

McCain on the other hand made a decisive choice to suspend his campaign, put the priorities of the American taxpayer above the election, demanded a postponing of the debate, and is returning to Washington to do the job he was elected to do. That is leadership.

Obama’s campaign is currently “formulating a response” to McCain’s statement. What’s so fucking hard about saying, “Okay Senator McCain, we’ll return to Washington to help the American people?” Obama and his campaign doesn’t care about us, they just care about how they can make it look like this campaign suspension was his idea, or is a stunt by McCain.

Obama has no solution to this crisis. He has nothing to bring to the table. It was very generous of Senator McCain to invite the Illinois man cub to join in the process nonetheless. Obama should now shut up, sit in the corner, and let the adults do their job.

I have no doubt that Senator McCain and his close friend Senator Clinton will bring the parties together and find a solution. Barry can bring the chips and dip.

      • notodisenfranchisement

had heard the McCain campaign emailed the Hugh Hewitt show and said that the Obama campaign lied – he did not call this morning.

      • varepub

Okay, Obama wants a statement (talk) McCain wants action. Let the games begin.

      • Country First

Obama said he made a call, but he did not get through to McCain.

Obama needs to get back to Washington. The debate is about foreign affairs, and it could be posponed for a week; but I’m sure Obama would like to have the stage all to himself.

I’d like to know who that debate commission is that would not delay the debate a week.

      • MJ

        1. McCain is only down in the polls that have questionable internals (i.e. polled more than 10% more Democrats than Republicans, etc.)

        2. Why would McCain NOT want to debate Obama, particularly in the area of foreign policy. McCain could talk circles around Obama on that issue.

Most likely, McCain was trying to be nice to Obama. He recognized that there was no way Obama could sit in an economic meeting for the next two days and also be completely ready to debate McCain on foreign policy. Obama is too focused on ME. He can’t now or EVER think about putting country first.

Here’s a great idea: McCain should send Palin in his place to debate Obama on Friday night. After all, a VP should be able to step in for the President when needed. Then Palin would beat the socks off Obama in the area of foreign policy!

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I see specific note that he didn’t talk to McCain and didn’t do more than make the initial call. McCain responded at 2:30 p.m. Fox has more on timing at:

I see some spinning already at http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com but they are not clear on talking points yet.

      • Firefly

McCain’s campaign person said that 0bama called at 8:30, but left no message as to the subject matter he wanted to discuss.

Kinda hard for bambi to argue that he made the “heroic” first move (or whatever childish “I should get the credit” game he’s trying to play) when he didn’t even give McCain any information about the purpose of his call.

How is Obama going to take credit for fixing the bailout if he’s out on the campaign trail instead of in Washington? I’m sure the media will do its best to spin it that way, but I think he made a stupid move by trying to minimize the importance of being in Washington and doing his job as U.S. Senator. I agree.
Sen Obama…since he has no REAL experience in foreign policy…was out in Florida Training/preparing for the debate on friday which was to focus on foreign policy.

Wow…think about it…time being spent for on the job training to look good during friday’s debate

      versus

going to Congress to see how he can help?

Both men are still Senators. They have Senator responsibilities.

There is MUCH discussion in Congress regarding the financial crisis that needs the attention of our elected Senators.

Was Sen Obama planning to vote ‘present’ or abstain from voting in case something came up in Congress dealing with the financial crisis that needed his input? Is he keeping up to date on the daily discussions in Congress on this issue?

Obama did a town hall solo in PA. Must not have gone over well as the MSM/Corporate media hasn’t crowed about it. In fact, if I hadn’t listened to local PA media on line I wouldn’t even have known it happened.

Obama keeps sending Biden to PA. Biden keeps talking about how his family were PA coal miners. Except the descendants of actual coal miners in PA keep disputing his account.

McCain asked that they both be faced with unscripted questions, in a Town Hall forum, from the public. That would be a good compare and contrast. Guess Obama didn’t want that.

Oh wow, that’s a fabulous idea. I never even considered the possibility. McCain could say he’s got big boy business to take care of, but if Obama really inists on a debate, he’ll send Sarah Palin to take care of his light work for him. I love it, LOL.

      • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I truly think that this would be a great move on McCain’s part. Get the offer out now, let Obama fume and either go with it or say no and return to Washington.

        • stodghie

mccain already owns it and obama’s been framed as a self invovled whiner.

    • lark

Great idea since you already know that she isn’t prepared. The only thing that can happen is that she is prepared and better prepared that Obambi.

    • Duras

I’d absolutely LOVE to see that! So would the McCain campaign.

    • http://ladyboomernyc.wordpress.com/ trixta

      Love it!

    • NoBamaNoWay

uh, you obviously don’t know what non-kool aid drinkers think about your boy’s “qualifications.” and he’s running for president, not vp.

    • candymarl

Obama doesn’t need prove he can outdo the VP. He needs to prove he can run the country.

If the best Obama can can is prove he’d make a better VP than Palin then why is he running for the top spot?

      • candymarl

        “can prove is”.

      • AliasJohnDoe

I’d like to see McCain make a statement, while he’s hard at work in Washington, suggesting Obama should debate Nader. On economic and foreign issues, Nader would wipe Obama off his shoes.

    • Leisa

Give her the same prep time and squad with access to all of Obama’s cheat sheets and you have a deal.

    • http://! Clinton Fan

Yeah, because the VICE PRESIDENTIAL candidate is apparently, in your thick head, “”"”EQUAL”"”" to the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

Hey, it’s your crew that whines about Palin not having sufficient national and foreign policy experience, after all…now you want to put them on an equal footing. It apparently makes YOU feel more comfortable, eh?

      Game, set, match.

      You lose.

      Go home.

    • beebop

Bring.It.On. He’d be so busy preening to make sure that the cameras were on him more than HER that he’d blow all the answers. It would be his undoing!!!

Who in the world would want Obama in Washington working on an economic crisis? Obama is the guy who couldn’t buy his house by himself, had to get Rezko to help him.

    • Shainzona

Oh, thanks so much for the belly laugh!!!!!

    • No way No Mccain

I don’t know. Who had his wife buy him,is it 7 or 9 houses? What does that have to do with the economy? Nothing.

      • Duras

But getting the bailout package right has EVERYTHING to do with the economy! Yet Obambi can’t be bothered to fly to Washington to do his f**king job. Getting his face on national TV on schedule is more important to him, I suppose.

Thankfully one of the candidates still remembers that he still has significant responsibilities as a sitting US Senator.

Don’t think that the American people won’t notice this.

      • Diana L. C.

She and he have many children–Many super rich people have these properties as investments or as properties to leave to children. There will be poor always, just as there will be people always. The fact that McCain did not know how to answer that question just means to me that he does not concern himself with Cindy’s money or with houses.

Give it a break! Why did he agree to the government funding limitations for campaign finances, then keep the agreement while O made many, many statements about how he was going to do that, but when HE found out he could get lobby pay-offs galore from places like Freedie Mac, Fannie M., Lehman, etc., etc., he went ahead an broke the agreement to use the federal campaing funds. He blows through money like crazy–outspending his openents. Hillary kept beating him in primaries to the end though he outspent her by huge amounts. He’s barely ahead on scewed polls, and he’s spending way, way more than McCain himself. If McCain wanted access to Cindy’s money, yes — he could outspend Obama. But he did the honorable thing and kept the agreement.

      • Ted Kennedy’s Swim Coach

        What did Joe Biden say?
Obama is not qualified to president.
His own VP says Obie’s not ready!

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Joe, please continue to drop your pearls of wisdom!

      • candymarl

You proved your own point. The McCain’s houses did not cause this economic crisis. This is a wide spread systemtic problem.

Perhaps Obama should give up his Rezko financed house and his rich supporters should sell theirs.

Obama’s Hollywood friends just held a thousand of dollars a plate fund raiser for his campaign. Perhaps they should have used that money to help bail out the economy.

Oh, and maybe Oprah could sell her private island.

      • http://! Clinton Fan

Cindy buys her own houses with her own money–she doesn’t need her husband to help her, and she doesn’t need to snuggle up with crooks to make a deal go through.

She’s RICH. Like Theresa Heinz Kerry.

        STINKING RICH.

        Get over it.

        If you can.

      • beebop

I don’t see John McCain’s name ANY WHERE NEAR the top of the list of big beneficiaries of Fannie hand outs. Sorry to tell you that Cindy McCain’s father’s hard work and risking $25K to make the fortune that is hers is admired by most Americans. Little socialist snots like you don’t appreciate it, but that is how America came to be great. Kind of like the Kennedy family … oh and when it comes to marrying money, Kerry did it too … her name is Theresa.

    • janicen

Great point! Why would we entrust the economy to a guy who has to get help from a now convicted felon in order to buy a house he could not afford?

    • gross

yeah and obama can bring his friends/advisers from fannie and countrywide to help!…oh wait…

The same behavior you decried when displayed by Bush supporters.

        http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/reid-mccain-to-support-bailout-2008-09-23.html

Reid specifically challenged McCain on Tuesday to take a position on the bailout package.

This man is one that needs to go when we clean house in Washington. What a conniving partisan clown doesn’t give one speck of thought to the average American.

        Go get ‘em John.

        • cocky whacko

Where did it say, he should come back to the Senate and suspend his campaign. The point of forcing him to take a position was that they knew he was going to cowardly not take a position and then use it as campaign issue. McCain is really unbelievable.

      • beebop

The details were on the news last night … ABC … All bull crap.

    • Lis

Old Harry Reid is still sick from that disfunctional family he grew up in. In his book he talks about how his daddy was a drunk & he watched his parents fight & finally joined in himself to fist fight with his daddy. He’s an old fool & needs to be voted out of office.

      • AliasJohnDoe

I bet Harry only “slap fights”.

    • Duras

Harry Reid is one of the most contemptable sacks of s**t on the face of the Earth. I wouldn’t believe him if he told me it was raining outside. He’d pimp out his own mother for a pack of cigarettes. The fact that he’s actually the Majority Leader in the US Senate really says a lot about the sorry state of today’s Democratic Party. He’s one of the turds that needs to be flushed.

    • Maverick

Reid and Nancy are the reason we are in this crisis and they have Hillary blaming the Repubs as her talking point.

They are first class thugs for doing nothing and now our government is failed!

      http://www.polticallydrunk.com says this:
Yet, despite criticism over the financial bailout, Democrats are pushing forward with their own $25 billion auto industry bailout that offers taxpayers no protection, no oversight, no hearings, no debate and no guarantee that the plan will work. They are looking for votes from Michigan? All this done behind closed doors with no guarantee! Pelosi needs to be impeached!
      read more:

Amid the onslaught of criticism over the proposed $700 bailout of financial firms this week, Democratic Leaders have been working behind closed doors to pass a $25 billion bailout of the auto industry. This week, both Democrats and Republicans have attacked the Treasury and Federal Reserves proposal for a financial bailout on the basis that the proposal offers no oversight and no taxpayer protections. This criticism follows similar attacks over the bailout of Lehman, AIG and Fannie and Freddie.
Yet, despite criticism over the financial bailout, Democrats are pushing forward with their own $25 billion auto industry bailout that offers taxpayers no protection, no oversight, no hearings, no debate and no guarantee that the plan will work.

The proposed bailout will commit $7 billion to offer $25 billion in bailout loans to automakers. Yet, with no plan put forth by automakers on how they will turn around sagging sales and no accountability mechanism in place, there is a large chance that taxpayers will eventually end up writing-off the debt.
On September 10th, Nancy Pelosi, when asked about the bailout stated, “”This is very, very important. It’s an important industry in our country. It’s about jobs. Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs.” But without hearings, debate, any demand of an industry recovery plan and no oversight, this bill is more likely about: Votes, Votes and more votes in Michigan.

    • NoBamaNoWay

the blind partisanship is indeed depressing.

    • candymarl

McCain is a sitting Senator. Reid can’t tell him what to do. They’re panicking because McCain just showed up Obama on the leadership issue again.

BTW is there a link or news source that backs this story? Disinformation works when nothing else does.

    • cynic

So, what do you figure John McCain is going to do? I mean, just showing up doesn’t actually mean anything, does it? Is he going to bring his profound knowledge of economics directly to bear on this problem?

Or will he be a means for Phil Gramm to have some input into the process?

      • McKatmoon

You do realize he is his party’s leader?

Running around to Europe, to claim foreign policy experience on a resume, or saying having a campaign qualifies one to be fiscally responsible, on a resume…Just because that’s how the do nothing democrats have chosen to behave for the last two years, doesn’t make it the status quo.

And what will O do with his profound speaking
abilities at a debate to help solve this problem; nothing as usual MIA.

Let’s make it simple, help solve a problem, confir with others, work together, contribute, show concern by action, or picking out what outfit you want to wear on TV.

The 110th has already broken the historical record for most roll-call votes, so it doesn’t wash to call them do nothing!

Another fun fact: the 109th worked from noon Tuesday to noon Thursday. They were the worst Congress ever. :)

      • No way No Mccain

Yes I agree. McCain is using this as a gimmick. Phil Gramm is running this economic campaign of McCains. As McCain said he knows nothing about the economy.Yes, Mr. Deregulator is running around with his hair on fire because he has no clue. At least Obama’s economic advisers were Clinton advisers. Not part of this greed and corrution on wall street. That is who makes up McCains campaign. A bunch of incompetent thugs. McCain will do anything to win even at the expense of the American people. Country first my ass.

I guess getting face time on national TV is more important, huh?

      • candymarl

McCain is howing his willoingess to work with his other Senators to solve the rpoblem.

McCain never said he had all of the answers. He said he was going to help work on the problem.

Of course they are here for us to toy with.

There are as many here as the day that Sarah Palin was announced as VP.

Try to put yourself into the mind (term usely used) of an Obot for a second. In their hearts they know that McCain’s pledge to the American people has hastened Obama’s demise. From this day forward Obie will traverse that well worn path that many Dem. Pres. candidates have travelled. Dukakis, Kerry, Mondale, and soon Obama are members of that club. It must be painful for them to watch their messiah go down in flames.

Painful to watch. I feel for them, truly.

Give me a break. This was a transparent effort on McCain’s behalf to score points with an empty gesture. As Governor Rendel from PA put it, “What, does he think the Senate will be convening at 9 pm on a Friday?” As *everyone* has observed, the presence of McCain and Obama would be inject partisan politics into the process and would be a massive distraction to the negotiations.

    • Seattle Moss

      Poor Jon,
      Not much to say!
McCain is a patriot..You can see it in his eyes

The American people are on to you.

    • Shiloh

That spin is failing. Good to see someone putting the job the have over the job they want.

    • Shainzona

The senate should be in session at 9 PM on Friday – and all through the week-end and all next week to DO SOMETHING.

An empty gesture? A senator doing the work of the senate? Sure makes BO’s 142 days “experience” in that body even more empty.

    • No way No Mccain

I agree Jon. McCain is nothing if not tranparent. Trying to look Presidential and instead comes off looking like he can’t do two things at once. That is just what we need another President who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. What did you expect, something different? From a republican?

      • mel

        Showing your ignorance again troll?

When in the middle of negotiations, you do not go into a public forum and allow the possible injection of the negotiations by the media!

        • No way No Mccain

What is there to negotiate? That you and I and every other American is going to fork out money we do not have to bail out the greed on wall street? So they can do it again?

Look, doing to things at the same time always, always proves and insures that both things are done poorly. The problems we are having are precisely because everyone is multitasking. To do things right you have to do one thing at a time. But then today, who cares about doing things right. No? When you can do it twenty times over and spend twenty times what’s required. False? Then why are high school graduates studying remedial algebra and taking simple algebra during their first year of college. The decay in our country is precisely linked to multitasking. Enjoying life and working hard at the same time.

        • Diana L. C.

Exactly why Senators at this point should forget the debates and concentrate on their real jobs.

Okay, what do you suggest McCain do? Continue obliviously like Obama and like Bush did back in 2001?! Seriously, what do you suggest is a better alternative? And, since the barn door is now open, how about suggesting what you think Obama should do at this point? Do you agree with his call and insistance on holding the debate as scheduled? Do you agree with his apparent comment to return to Washington only if needed for a close vote? Is this acceptable leadership to you?

I would appreciate substantive answers as this is a discussion thread and not a one-way conversation.

        Thanks!
        Matthew

        • blue

If I wanted Obama to win, I would urge him to immediately & forcefully present Hillary Clinton’s HOLC plan, rally behind it & threaten McCain with using the debate slot to broadcast Democrats getting behind it & tell him he’s happy to debate an empty chair.

If I wanted McCain – which he has already made great strides towards doing by being seen taking the initiative – to win this round, McCain would have to arrange taking credit for cutting the measure to its barest possible minimum, lower than the alt “plan.”

And since this little domestic Shock Doctriney plan has been on the books for some time apparently Wall Street & vested interests who own both of these parties have probably already factored this all in & will be able to comfortably adjust to whatever changes old Maverick McCain “forces” on them. Or he may outright reject it & get a general election’s worth of positive anti-Washington spin out of it.

It sure feels good to be an independent now. I am no longer dependent on my party to do my thinking for me, and it is so much easier to see the BS on both sides.

The Dems can not win with their current strategy, people are sick of that partisan game and it’s the majority Dems whom are playing it the loudest.

this is what BO said yesterday:

23 Sept: CBS: Obama May Not Return to D.C. for Bailout Vote
(CLEARWATER BEACH, FLA.) – Although Barack Obama argues that the financial meltdown is an “emergency situation”, he said today that he may remain on the campaign trail, rather than returning to the Capitol, to vote on the $700 billion plan.
“Look if we get a consensus and everybody is popping champagne – then I will probably be going back to campaign with folks who are having a tough time in places like Ohio, and Michigan and Pennsylvania,” Obama said adding, “If this ends up being a close vote or a vote where the outcome is an open question then obviously this is a top priority.”..
    http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/09/23/politics/fromtheroad/entry4472357.shtml

yet the media is already spinning that somehow BO is initiating all the concern.

the polls have been manipulated for months. they need to be called out. no doubt they wanted BO to be up prior to the debate in case McCain turned out the winner. then they could simply put them as tied again.

fraud will be the last resort for the BO campaign and they will perpetrate it with the connivance of the corpmedia.

A joint statement of support is a ploy. Going to washington to work suspending your campaign and taking ads down to prove this for real is leadership only mccain has shown.
The few big moments of this campaign have all been from McCain. America needs heroes as leaders. Not terrorist sympathisers and unsure unsteady flip-flopery when america needs us to come together in washington and restore confidence in the market.
Vote for real leadership that has a proven record of changing washington against enormous odds.

How would Obama remember the way to his office? He was only there for 143 days before breaking his promise to Tim Russert not to run for POTUS in his first term as a junior senator. He’s subsequently been parading around for what- 600 days campaigning?! And has the nerve to tout his “campaign experience” as “executive experience”- Oh, nevermind.

If I were the O team I would not let McCain grab the ball here. They think they are not playing into his hands- they are exactly wrong.

  • http://divinedem.blogspot.com/ Mary Ellen

It’s interesting that Chuck Schumer would say that politics shouldn’t be interjected into the talks on the bailout…ummmm, isn’t Schumer a politician? Isn’t Reid a politician? Then we find out that Reid said McCain should come back and join the talks, and now he says stay away. I think our Dems are having a personal identity crisis, not an economic one. Sheesh!

  • http://www.governuts.us Agust304

Obama saying he will stay “on his little stool” in Florida to prepare for the debate is his “Reading the Goat Story Moment.” The towers of finance are collapsing and he does not jump into action, saying if they need me to be in DC to do my job they will call me. Well the voters of Illinois called him in 2004 to go to DC to do his job. Now what?

    • Terry

Great point – Bush sat around and did what he was ALREADY SCHEDULED to do when America was hit on 9/11. Well, America has been hit again. But hey Obama, we know, you’ve got plans already. Don’t worry. Get some rest. Real leaders will take care of it for you. Hillary will give you a call when the Senate reaches an agreement. Nighty-night, sleep tight.

    • http://chriss chris

Obama needs to study. McCain doesn’t. McC can do both things because he is already prepared. I am glad he’s going to do the job he is being paid to do, especially with this crisis. Good for him and little BO is having a hard time acting like a grown-up again. He forgets what his job is because he never really did it. He is a US Senator hired by the people of Illinois to represent them especially in times of crisis. He was so happy at his nice Florida golf resort memorizing his answers. He actually said he doesn’t think he has to retunr unless the vote is close? Man that is a truly self-centered and foolish answer. This is the guy some people want to hire to have the lead job? What a crock. I can’t believe how he could be ahead in any polls. Just amazes me that people can keep making excuses for him. Can the people of Illinois get a do over or something? I’d be hopping mad if he was my Senator.

      • http://msnGodhelpusall Lee M

He would return if the vote was close.

Jeepers Creepers, doesn’t he think that the fact that he wants the most important job in the world should mean he should have some input in the discussions? A leader should lead, not just rubber stamp what others have decided. Is he afraid he might be asked some embarassing questions about how much money he received from Wall Street?

A senator is supposed to advise and consent, not “me too” after other people have done the advising.

DDO YOUR JOB, BARKY. IF YOU CAN’T STAND THE HEAT GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN.

Now all of a sudden debates are important to O’barky?

Obarky has been dodging McCain on Town Hall Debates for Months. Obarky shouted to the heavens during the primaries that he would debate John McCain “any time, any place. He agreed to Town Hall Debates, then disagreed and opted out.

Now, with a financial crisis needing leadership, O’barky want to retreat to a debate?

Why isn’t the press calling this asshole out on the hypocrisy? FOX News is not even calling him out.

McCain and Obama are Senators and in times of crisis, they should do their jobs. I respect McCain for taking the lead and going back to Washington to help in this crisis. I think Obama not agreeing to do the same, makes him look weak and ill prepared to be this country’s leader. He said in his announcement that the president should be able to multi-task…well, then let him multi-task from washington instead of spending more time, promoting his campaign and himself.

    • Elizabeth

Obama isn’t “multi-tasking.” He’s in lock down mode inside a Tampa hotel preparing for a debate on FOREIGN POLICY. Doing nothing whatsoever to address what is on the brain of 90% of Americans at this very crucial point in our financial future.

  • Shiloh

Step back and try to be objective. What are Obama’s alternatives? He can’t really expect JM to change his mind and not go. JM will say “if” it is settled then the debate can go on but not before. Then Obama has to follow him to DC and look weak, or stay away and cry fould and look even weaker. He’s between a rock and a hard place for sure. And he’s got to be asking himself – what if JM manages to score a victory in the next 2 days and I’m out here doing nothing?

Obama and Dodd stopped the McCain bill S190 that would have helped avert this crisis. Now Obama is off reading the goat book to the kiddies.

        • cynic

McCain joined as a co-sponsor of S.190 in May 2006.

The only problem is that S.190 was already a dead bill. It had failed to secure senatorial support and died in the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee in July 2005. It never got beyond committee level.

Barack Obama WAS NOT a member of the committee that killed off S.190. At the time, he was a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, the Veterans Affairs Committee, the Homeland Security Committe and the Health & Education Committee.

McCain’s sponsorship of the bill commenced after the bill had technically died.

Obama never opposed the bill in any fashion.

This is not “wasteful government spending”. Try to educate yourself a bit.

From a great article in WaPo today

The Treasury proposal will not be a bailout of Wall Street but a rescue of Main Street, as lending capacity and confidence is restored to our banks and the delicate balance between production and finance is given a chance to work its magic. Democratic Party earmarks mandating forbearance on home mortgage foreclosures will be critical as well. If this program is successful, however, it is obvious that the free market and Wild West capitalism of recent decades will be forever changed. Future economic textbooks are likely to teach that while capitalism is the most dynamic and productive system ever conceived, it is most efficient over the long term when there is another delicate balance — between private incentive and government oversight.

(CNN) – Rep. Alcee Hastings told an audience of Jewish Democrats Wednesday that they should be wary of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin because “anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks.”

“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday.

Meet Alcee Hastings, courtesy of Wiki:

“In 1981, Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence and a return of seized assets for 21 counts of racketeering by Frank and Thomas Romano, and of perjury in his testimony about the case. He was acquitted by a jury after his alleged co-conspirator, William Borders, refused to testify in court (resulting in a jail sentence for Borders).

In 1988, the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives took up the case, and Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury by a vote of 413-3. Voters to impeach included Democratic Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers and Charles Rangel. He was then convicted in 1989 by the United States Senate, becoming the sixth federal judge in the history of the United States to be removed from office by the Senate…”

Voters have eyes and ears, remember? Brains, too.

What a lame answer to McCain’s decision: Call me when you need me.

The 3 p.m. call came in. And Obama’s too busy campaigning and debating himself to answer.

This election could easily come down to this very moment. The man who is willing to take a bold stand and the other man, voting “present” as is his political habit.

Take a good look, America. Who looks Presidential?

It’s strikingly clear to me. Obama = fraud.

    • cynic

The guy “taking a bold stand” wasn’t actually invited back to participate in the bail-out process. He decided himself. Economic matters aren’t McCain’s strong suit. That’s common knowledge. His presence may politicize the discussion, if he insists on inserting himself into the process as a high-profile participant. It would be better if both McCain and Obama stayed out of the spotlight in Washington, continued their campaigns, stayed informed, and returned for a vote when the time comes.

      • Mr. X

This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard about this topic yet. Two senators running for President, where one of them will lead the country, should butt out of it? That’s what you’re saying? That makes no sense at all.

John McCain is a leader, Obama worked less than 150 days in the Senate before running for office! Obama isn’t a senator he is a parasite, he is just using the senate to become more powerful!!

      • Peggy Sue

John McCain doesn’t need an invitation or ask Harry Reid’s permission to come to DC and work in behalf of the present financial crisis/resolution. He’s a senator; it’s his job. He’s working for the American public. Obama? He works for himself.

BTW Cynic, for your information: yesterday Harry Reid said they could use everyone on board, including McCain. But when the statement turned against the favored one? His tune changed.

And this is why a lifelong Dem [myself] is voting for McCain/Palin ’08.

Despite what the, ahem, media is saying, I think Mac has the upper hand here. He’s being true to his campaign theme, Country First.

When presidents in the past dealt with crises, they dropped whatever they were doing, flew back to Washington, and took care of business. They did not remain where they were just to remain aloof and multitask.

This financial crisis is extremely serious and needs the full attention of our representatives in Congress. McCain is doing the right thing but as usual, may not get credit for it. He doesn’t care about that, he just wants to serve his country, just as he has always done.

You might not like him, but he is the president we have now and the office should be respected, as should the people of this country.

Put down the little goat book, Obama, and get to work.

  • IronMan

    FOX NEWS just reported:

McCain is suggesting the first Presidential debate be postponed until Wednesday, October 1, 2008, in St. Louis, MO, the date and location of the currently scheduled VP debate. And then have the VP debate the following week in Mississippi.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

    Country First!

    • 30yrdem-not any more

No they have spent millions getting ready for this on Friday…it won’t work….Form the way the MSM is spinning this it is going to hurt McCain.

      • meileen

I disagree. I think the media will spin it, yes, but I think there will be a backlash from the electorate. We do rule, and hopefully Obambi’s folly will shine through.

        • cocky whacko

According to SurveyUSA only 10% of public think the debate should be postponed. It looks like there is a backlash, against McCain’s transparent political stunt. Does anyone really believe that this was motivated by anything other than politics?

do you know how few voters watch the talking jerks on tv. it is VERY SMALL! the average voter doesn’t give a dang what msnbc thinks!

    • Duras

What the Obama people are hoping will happen is that if McCain doesn’t show up for this debate, then they will have a legitimate excuse for not rescheduling a debate on foreign affairs.

But this is a big miscalculation, IMHO. Being perceived as not being willing to put politics aside for the time being and come together for the good of the country is going to really hurt Obama.

  • mel

Obama proves his complete ignorance by still wanting the debates!

What is a major part of the debates? The economy!

How can you discuss the economy when major negotications are going on to resolve the ecenomic crisis? You can’t and don’t!

But someone with a brain needs to figure that out and we all know Obama is brainless and clueless!

You can’t discuss the economic crisis at the debate without muddling the issue so much that it will be impossible to pass any bill.

Two problems. 1.) Fridays’s debates is about foreign policy. 2.) If you don’t want to inject presidential politics into negotiations, then you should really hate McCain’s cynical ploy.

I also can’t stand their smearing every DemocratIC politician with their hateful invective. No side is “all bad.” That’s just stupid thinking.

Obama sucks as a candidate not because of his party, not because of his name, not because of his skin tone, not because of his father’s faith, and not even because of his batshit associations with that crazy minister and that FU church….his problem is that he is inexperienced, he lacks basic knowledge on everything from geography to history, he displays, routinely, VERY POOR JUDGMENT, he is condescending, snippy, at times angry, and more often, testy, he doesn’t take good advice, and he most definitely overestimates the import of the verbal crap he spews.

And as for those wingnuts, not only are they hellishly wedded to that speech impediment, they also quite obviously never, ever–not once–won a spelling bee. They didn’t even come in second, or third, or fifth, I suspect.

It seems like that flavor of angry, spitting hyper-partisanship is often accompanied by an inability to spell even simple words. It also makes them easy to spot, even if they aren’t talking about DemocratIC politicians!!

Biden has deep ties to Rezko accomplice
JOSEPH CARI | 30-year friend of VP pick guilty in kickback scheme
    August 25, 2008
    BY DAVE MCKINNEY Staff Reporter/dmckinney@suntimes.com
DENVER — No matter what help Barack Obama might get from Sen. Joseph Biden, his newly named vice presidential running mate won’t give Obama much cover on the Tony Rezko front. Biden has described himself as a 30-year friend of a key figure in the Rezko trial who’s pleaded guilty to a federal extortion charge in Chicago and is awaiting sentencing. Joseph Cari Jr. who took part in an $850,000 kickback scheme, was Joe Biden’s Midwest field director.
When the Delaware senator began contemplating his own 2008 presidential run, he initially was helped by Chicago lawyer Joseph Cari Jr., who also served as Biden’s Midwest field director in his failed 1988 bid for president.
In 2005, Cari admitted to taking part in an $850,000 kickback scheme that prosecutors say was part of a larger political fund-raising operation for Gov. Blagojevich overseen by Rezko, who was convicted in June of wide-ranging corruption involving state deals.
On the day Cari’s name first surfaced in the federal probe of the state Teachers Retirement System, the former finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee and for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was to have hosted a Biden fund-raiser in Chicago. Cari was a no-show at that July 25, 2005, event.
Offering Cari a vote of confidence at the time, Biden said, “All I know is Joe Cari is a friend, and he’s an honorable guy, but I don’t know anything beyond that.”
Biden took $2,000 in campaign contributions from Cari in the early and mid-1990s, federal campaign-finance records show. Two other donors whose names surfaced in the Rezko case — Chicago lawyers Myron “Mike” Cherry and Anthony Licata — donated to Biden’s U.S. Senate campaign, as well. Cherry has given Biden $5,900, while Licata gave $1,000. Neither Cherry nor Licata has been accused of any criminal wrongdoing.
Earlier this year, in a bid to distance Obama from Rezko, the Illinois senator’s campaign fund gave away to charity an amount equal to what had been contributed to the Democratic presidential hopeful by Cari, Cherry and Licata.
The Obama campaign downplayed the significance of Cari’s contributions to Biden, noting that Cari was a prolific donor to an array of other politicians, from Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) to Illinois’ other Democratic senator, Dick Durbin.
Still, an Obama spokesman said Biden would follow Obama’s lead and divest his campaign fund of any money from Cari.
“As the former national finance director for the DSCC and DNC, Mr. Cari was a fund-raiser for many prominent elected officials,” spokesman Ben LaBolt said. “If any contributions from Mr. Cari have not been returned or donated it is an oversight, and they will be immediately.”

      Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Biden has deep ties to Rezko?

That is insane. What are these people? They are all corrupt.

Here’s a challenge for those reading here that support Obama or do not agree with McCain’s actions today.

What do you suggest McCain do?
Continue obliviously like Obama now and like Bush did back in 2001?!

I and I’m sure others here would appreciate reading substantive answers as this is a discussion thread and not a one-way conversation.

    Thanks!
    Matthew

I was wondering when someone else would remember the goat.

      • Shiloh

I posted on that an hour and a half ago

    • Shiloh

McCain should say IF it is settled then the debate can go on but the delay of one of four debates cannot rise to the level of a national crisis, that’s absurd. Obama has chosen to attack McCain, call it a trick and say that leadership would be doing both things at once. I think that fails but we’ll see.

The media is in the tank for Obama on this of course. I think Obama is left arguing that senators who want to be president aren’t needed in the senate to lead! and that politics is more important that the economy! Both losers IMO.

Frankly I think Obama should fold on this, go to DC and try to look like as much a leader as JM. But I hope he doesn’t do that. I hope he sits back and whines.

    • SJ

Maybe some of them would like McCain to do as Obama is doing and say call me if you need me.

Obama is all over the place saying this is a mess, this is a crisis but yet he cant go to Washington to help fix it, so how much of a mess is it really in his eyes, or does he believe calling on the phone is good enough to fix this problem.

McCain on the other hand will be there in the thick of things he will not have to rely on second hand information he will be hands on, and what better way to get a feel and the jest of exactly what is needed than being up on the front line battling?

Seems to me Obama and his supporters all say 700bill is a lot of money, but they sure don’t seem to care who spends it, or exactly where it goes.

    • stodghie

      mccain, yes! obama, no!

  • PAwoman

Does Barack Obama have any experience with the economy? What is his experience? Or is campaigning for the next highest office his experience?

And what about Rezko and Reverend Wright? What about god damn America? And what about the special mortgage Obama received from his contributors? And what about the Rezko loan? What about Penny Pritzker?

  • IronMan

Obama is ready to talk, not ready to lead!

  • Raven

It is my feeling that both of these candidates should
proceed with the debate. They can answer the need
to attend any meeting with President Bush, and conference with the leadership in the Senate. It is
important for the nation to hear what they have to say on foreign policy and our crumbling economy. The
two issues are tied. What is being discussed in Washington is not a “bailout” as much as it is a “lifeline” for our economic future.
There is much at stake, not everyone has made their
choice. Many on this site have decided for Sen. McCain. I saw an increase the number of undecideds.
People are worried about their families. They’re just
trying to “make it”. They want to hear which of these
candidates is going to address their concerns.

    • meileen

Waiting 5 days to debate won’t screw the pooch. Working to fix this mess will help those worried families. It’s a postponement, not a cancelation. Had the O agreed to the town hall meeting style of debates McCain suggested, we would have our answers.

      • Shiloh

I think voters would love a chance to see the two attempt to lead instead of just talk. It doesn’t matter what we think, the decision has been made. Obama can follow or debate by himself.

  • jennie

How can we trust congress, who is at fault for this situation in the first place. Dodd, Reid, all those bastards decided not to regulate Fannie and Freddie and now they are screaming for oversight and a piece of the pie. If they politic this thing to dealth and earmark it, we will have a financial meltdown.
    Please.
I have worked as a trader for a long time, and the only thing that will kill the economy is doing nothing. By doing nothing you are allowing the street to decide for you what happens to the economy. The street doesn’t care about you or me or the economy. They want a direction to trade. If none is provided they will give a direction–down, down, down.
The Street is waiting for answers from Washington. They wont wait forever. The mbs is toxic waste, and someone needs to clean it up. No one has bigger pockets than Uncle Sam.

    • jennie

Furthermore, do you realize what will happen if the congress does not pass this?
The chairman of the federal reserve and the secretary of the treasury have said that if this bailout is not passed we will repeat the depression. Do you realize what this means to traders?
If the bailout is not passed, we will have a meltdown. Because it was framed and said this way, it will become true. That is the way that traders think. And just because you can short stocks doesn’t mean you can short equity futures…

      • Maverick

The mood of the day in Washington is panic and fear. Lawmakers in meetings with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke left ashen-faced when warned about the potential course of the U.S. economy absent a massive bailout. Those in the know keep hushed tones and insist “trust us,” while laymen—basically everyone in Congress and the press—fear the unspeakable catastrophe around the corner. Thanks Pelosi and Reid you do nothng thugs!!!

    • It’s Not Me

EXCUSE ME? I’m sorry, but DEREGULATION is the brainchild of the Republican Party. Though BOTH parties have benefited from lobbyist $$$$$$$$, the bright idea came from the damn Republican Party. Think Ronald Reagan and the airline industry. That’s worked out well, no? Reagan also deregulated the savings and loan institutions and I think we all know how THAT turned out. Nope….this freakin’ mess can be laid right at the feet of the republican party that has been hell-bent on undoing the New Deal since the day it was established. They are well on their way now.

Catch the last paragraph I posted down below. IT’S CHILLING! This was written on 1 November 1999! Last sentence:
The repetition of such events in the much larger banking and securities markets would be beyond the scope of any federal bailout

      WE ARE THERE!

      Read this:

      snip…
      Campaign of influence-buying

They had good reason, to be sure. The banking, insurance and brokerage industry lobbyists have combined their forces over the last five years to mount the best-financed campaign of influence-buying ever seen in Washington. In 1997 and 1998 alone, the three industries spent over $300 million on the effort: $58 million in campaign contributions to Democratic and Republican candidates, $87 million in “soft money” contributions to the Democratic and Republican parties, and $163 million on lobbying of elected officials.

The chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Texas Republican Phil Gramm, himself collected more than $1.5 million in cash from the three industries during the last five years: $496,610 from the insurance industry, $760,404 from the securities industry and $407,956 from banks.

During the final hours of negotiations between the House-Senate conference committee and White House and Treasury officials, dozens of well-heeled lobbyists crowded the corridors outside the room where the final deal-making was going on. Edward Yingling, chief lobbyist for the American Bankers Association, told the New York Times, “If I had to guess, I would say it’s probably the most heavily lobbied, most expensive issue” in a generation.

While Democratic and Republican congressmen and industry lobbyists claimed that deregulation would spark competition and improve services to consumers, the same claims have proven bogus in the case of telecommunications, airlines and other industries freed from federal regulations. Consumer groups noted that since the passage of a 1994 banking deregulation bill which permitted bank holding companies to operate in more than one state, both checking fees and ATM fees have risen sharply….snip

snip…And there is a much more recent experience than 1929 to serve as a cautionary tale. A financial deregulation bill was passed in the early 1980s under the Reagan administration, lifting many restrictions on the activities of savings and loan associations, which had previously been limited primarily to the home-loan market. The result was an orgy of speculation, profiteering and outright plundering of assets, culminating in collapse and the biggest financial bailout in US history, costing the federal government more than $500 billion. The repetition of such events in the much larger banking and securities markets would be beyond the scope of any federal bailout….snip

      http://www.wsws.org/articles/1999/nov1999/bank-n01.shtml

      • Maverick

Okay Obot. Whatever you say cut and paste.

      • katmandu

Actually, airline deregulation worked out very well. There have been a host of studies on it. And the bulk of the deregulation came during the Carter Administration. The Wikipedia citation is accurate — I know because I was somewhat involved in regulation at the time:

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Alfred E. Kahn, a professor of economics at Cornell University, to be chair of the CAB. A concerted push for the legislation had developed, drawing on leading economists, leading ‘think tanks’ in Washington, a civil society coalition advocating the reform (patterned on a coalition earlier developed for the truck-and-rail-reform efforts), the head of the regulatory agency, Senate leadership, the Carter Administration, and even some in the airline industry. This coalition swiftly gained legislative results in 1978.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_deregulation

The repeal of the Glass-Steagall act, an important ingredient in the current collapse (at least say experts) had bi-partisan backing. From Wiki:

The final bipartisan bill resolving the differences was passed in the Senate 90-8-1 and in the House: 362-57-15. Without forcing a veto vote, this bipartisan, veto proof legislation was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on November 12, 1999.

Berg Lawsuit. Obama sends motion to dismiss.

Looks like Obama doesn’t meet the requirments for POTUS. That motion to dismiss proves it………..

    http://www.q-audio.com/images/mtd.pdf

    • Docelder

So he wants it thrown out saying the court has no standing to rule, and that Berg has no standing to sue. Wouldn’t just giving the judge a copy of his birth certificate been a whole lot simpler? It would have ended this. And if that court has no standing to rule… then what court does? And if Berg has no standing as a citizen to sue… then who would? Or is any question of credentials of this candidate “off limits”?

    • Kal

The motion to dismiss does not prove that BO lacks the legal/constitutional qualification to hold the office of pres –

The legal test of whether a motion to dismiss will succeed is to look at the law on the assumption that the facts alleged in the complaint are true — and then, even if any dispute over facts is put aside, or presumed for the purposes of the motion to be resolved in favor of the complainant (Berg), there appears to be no good legal action, the case must be dismissed.

The legal grounds BO/DNC are claiming for the dismissal are that the court does not have jurisdiction over this matter, and that Berg has not shown how he would be injured if BO were not qualified to hold office. The McCain/Panama Canal case is cited as authority.

Personally I think those are dumb arguments, but judges tend to play it safe-ish. So if this is dismissed, Berg may have to appeal to get a better hearing. Or not! It’s all a roll of the dice!

Disenfranchising Republicans in Ohio…”Bamboozling You can Beleive In”

    http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080923/COL05/809230318/1055/NEWS%20target=

“And now she’s hassling Republicans who want to vote for John McCain.

Two Hamilton County voters have sued, accusing her of “the disenfranchisement of thousands of voters.”

The John McCain campaign sent out more than 1 million applications for absentee ballots to Republicans. Each had a line at the top next to a box: “I am a qualified elector.”

Brunner sent a memo telling county election officials to reject those applications for absentee ballots if the box was not checked. “Failure to check the box leaves both the applicant and the board of elections without verification that the applicant is a ‘qualified elector’,” she wrote.

But that’s contrary to state law and Brunner doesn’t have the authority, according to the lawsuit and an opinion from Hamilton County’s Republican Prosecutor Joe Deters.

Ohio law allows voters to request an absentee ballot on the back of a grocery sack if they want to, as long as they include their name, address, date of birth, signature and either a driver’s license number, last four Social Security numbers or a valid picture I.D.

There is nothing in the law about checking a box to verify a qualified voter. The voter’s signature is enough, because that’s what is checked to send ballots, said Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Greg Hartmann, who ran against Brunner in 2006 and is now county chairman for the McCain-Palin campaign. “It’s just bald partisanship,” he said. “She’s trying to disqualify likely McCain voters.”

Hey, Looks like Backtrack Obambi will be staying in Florida rehearsing, because at a press conference he just admitted,

“Obama: “If they need me, call me.”

Obama made a stunning gaffe in his press conference this afternoon, responding to McCain suspending his campaign and the economic crisis. Obama said, “If they [Congress] need me, call me.”

    • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

Looks like no-one needs him then. Good riddance!

Yes, and here’s another freudian slip by Democrats.

“Dems call McCain’s move a ‘stunt’” and Democratic Majority Leader Reid says “. We need leadership, not a campaign photo op,”

Yes Harry, only you would think it’s a photo op for John McCain to want to return to work from campaigning, to help try to solve this crisis. After all, a Democrat obviously must believe work and where they earn their pay would be the last place they should be. Thank YOU for clearing that up. And coming from the guy who stages a concert and speech in another country to try and consider that Foreign Policy Experience, it would be no wonder YOU and fellow Dem’s would think McCain actually trying to influce a resolve would be a photo op. LOL

You know, Harry Reid is endangering the possibility of a Democratic Majoirty in the Senate. He is nothing but political and spin.

Maybe it just be better for John McCain to go to that debate, so he could tell the millions watching how he predicted this 3 years ago and a year later again tried to get both his and Democrats to join his legislation and NONE rose to the challenge.

As they say, KARMA can be a bitch sometimes and payback is not just money being returned.

  • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

You can tell a lot about a man when he’s losing.

The debates were a sure-fire advantage McCain. Obama really sucks as a debater (and regrettably in other things as well–my world is not perfect). I was afraid McCain was going to tear Obama’s head off and shit down his neck during the debates. Fast forward to Hillary getting to stare at the figurehead the male headachy installed as President of the Senate for the next four years. Tough luck, Hillary, your friends at No Quarter revel in your humiliation.

    Things have changed, changed utterly
    A terrible beauty is borne.

The squadrons of chickens, having fed heartily on Voodoo Economics, are flying home to roost, Big Dog is on the warpath 24/7 and McCain’s numbers and those of the GOP are beginning to sag. McCain is that lone chicken at 12 o’clock high doing a Wrong Way Corrigan.

This isn’t the guy I remember.

    • obamaphobe

The fact that McCain would wants to postpone a debate with Obama in which he would rip him a new one should show you that he cares more about you than winning an election. He obviously isn’t concerning himself with what it looks like to everyone. It really wouldn’t matter what position he took, you and the liberal media will attack him. A lesser man would put politics first. Oh, that’s right, a lesser man did.

  • It’s Not Me

McCain is going to DC and will help solve this dilemma and still make it to the debate. THEN he can throw it in BO’s smug face. Who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, BO? SOME THINGS are just more important than campaigning and studying for a debate. BO is going to regret this. He’s so green. He doesn’t even know he’s been had.

    • Firefly

wrt WALKING AND CHEWING GUM AT THE SAME TIME:

Walking = helping fix the economy in congress

      Chewing gum = campaigning

So, McCain is WALKING (the walk) and 0bama is CHEWING THE GUM.

  • Shiloh

Obama: “These people are acting like I’m a senator. But I uh uh uh, what….. I am? Uh so uh well… hold on now uh…. DC is no place for a senator at this serious time. Yeah that’s it. If they need me they can call me.”

  • cynic

BTW, that story that McCain tried to take a stand for regulation in 2006 is total McCain campaign bullsh-t.

So is the tale that Obama stood in the way of such regulation.

The story has to do with S.190 of 2005, aka the “Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005″.

It was sponsored by Senator Chuck Hagel and co-sponsored by Sens. Dole and Sununu.

The bill was introduced in the Sentate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. It garnered no support and died in committe in July 2005. It never left the committee.

John McCain signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill in May 2006, after the bill was already technically dead. He did this for political reasons. He was already entertaining the idea of another presidential run, and wanted to enhance his reformer credentials. He therefore became an official co-sponsor of an already dead bill.

Obama had nothing whatsoever to do with S.190′s demise. Obama was not a member of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee in 2005. He was only in the Foreign Relations Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee, Homeland Security Committe and the Health & Education Committee.

So, McCain championed nothing promoting increased regulation, and Obama blocked nothing.

Those are the facts, like ‘em or not.

Hey, McCain loves us PUMAs he is still speaking at the CGI!!!!
Reid told him yest. that they needed His (McCain’s) leadership, that they couldn’t pass something without him… I think that was honest, I bet Obama called Reid on it so he changed his tune.
Just like Biden saying the computer ad was terrible until team Obama called him on it!
John McCain is needed, Democrats need bipartisans like McCain to pass something!

  • Feeling like a fool

I am always feeling like a fool because I don’t know what to believe. I always thought being a Senator was an important job, But two of the three Senators involved in the presidential race think you can do it by phone checks. If the job can be done by phone, maybe all the Congress people could stay home and do it by phone and save lots of taxpayer money. Or maybe only certain congressional leaders are important enough to need to be in Washington so does that mean we don’t need the rest of them? If not maybe we again can save some money. It is all so confusing.

This thread has a poster who thinks houses have nothing to do the current economic crisis? I guess it has been wasted effort to point out that the entire mess started with, no money down,no credit check mortgages being packaged in among good solid mortgages and than sold to

I guess all news goes in here right?

    SARAH PALIN LOVER REVEALED!

In a world exclusive The NATIONAL ENQUIRER names GOP VP Candidate Sarah Palin’s secret lover!

No less than three members of the man’s family including one by sworn affidavit have claimed that Sarah Palin engaged in an extramarital affair with husband Todd’s former business partner, Brad Hanson.

These sources have named Hanson as Palin’s secret love, and say their affair nearly wrecked both their marriages.

Hanson owned a snowmobile dealership with Palin’s husband Todd, who immediately dissolved the partnership after he heard stories about the affair, which occurred around 1996, according to the sources. At the time, Palin was mayor of Wasilla.

Palin has vehemently denied cheating on her husband, and Hanson insisted to The NATIONAL ENQUIRER that he was never romantically involved with the 44-year-old Republican vice presidential candidate.

However, Hanson family insider, Jim Burdett, has gone on the record and passed a rigorous polygraph test, revealing details of the affair to The NATIONAL ENQUIRER in a world exclusive interview.

Burdett is a former brother-in-law of Hanson’s estranged wife Carolyn’s brother, Craig Batton, and still speaks with many family members.

“I’ve known about Brad having had an affair for a long time, but it wasn’t until just recently that I learned his affair was with Sarah Palin,” Burdett told The NATIONAL ENQUIRER.

“Sarah was elected mayor of Wasilla, Brad became a city council member in the nearby town of Palmer, and they started an affair.

“Todd found out about the affair and was so mad he broke up their partnership at the snowmobile dealership,” Burdett claimed.

Another source, who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of repercussions, provided The NATIONAL ENQUIRER with a sworn affidavit attesting to the Palin-Hanson story.

“Todd was away on business a lot and Sarah felt lonely. Brad was a good listener, and Sarah talked to him at length. Eventually, she realized she was falling in love with him,” one insider divulged.

“When Todd got back from one of his trips, Sarah told him that she had begun to have feelings for Brad.”

Usually the one behind wants to have debates and other confrontational forums. And, in this case, Bobo must be really desperate since he does so poorly in them! Mac has put his back to the wall. No matter what BO does, he either looks weak for not coming to DC or weak for following Mac’s lead!

    • Shiloh

His other alternative is to look weak by pushing the spin that he is strong for being able to do both and McCain is weak for not being able to. In fact, that is exactly what he is doing. Makes no sense but he is giving it a shot.

  • educatedwhitewoman

Very clear on the news just now that Senate Republicans were opposed to the current bill – just as McCain said – it wasn’t going to pass. He’ll go to Washington, roll up his sleeves and see if he can get his colleagues to agree on a plan. It’s a big gamble, the kind a leader takes.

  • Pyromancer76

McCain is a DOER; Obama is a VERY SLOW THINKER. Imagine what the latter would look like on that Senate floor pretending alongside McCain and other long-time Senators that he should be a candidate for President. He would fall flat on his face. Have you seen him without a teleprompter?

This is one of the most severe crises this county has faced and we had better not give a blank check to the people who caused it. I am convinced that McCain — with Hillary’s help — will find a way to protect us, to keep the US financial solvent, and to punish the guilty. Do others believe like I am beginning to believe that anyone, anyone, anyone who cooks the books should get the death penalty?!?

So, first they need McCain’s leadership, according to Reid, but Obama doesn’t want to come so now he changes his tune. Is it any wonder that Congress has a lower approval rating than Pres. Bush?

What a bunch of spineless turds. I already sent Sen. Reid an email calling him a disgrace and that asking a Senator to not do their job is despicable. The candidates are still being paid to be Senators right? Translation: Let everyone else do the hard work of hammering out a compromise, twisting arms, making promises across the aisles, building coalitions. Once they have done all the work, I may show up to vote and grab some credit.

  • Really?

Suspending the campaign was a smart political move, likely one McCain never thought of until his advisors told him about it.

Not showing up for the debate, which amounts to a 2 hour break is just irresponsible for many reasons and will hurt him if he follows through.

    • Shiloh

OK lets hear the reasons why not delaying a debate a few days is more important than the economy.

      • Really?

McCain taking 2-6 hours off on Friday night is not going to cause the economy to collapse.

Try asking yourself why having the debate as schedule is more important, especially for the economy, than 2-6 hours in DC on a Friday night?

  • Docelder

How about this one… McCain and Hillary work together to bring about a consensus… each crediting the other and McCain offers her a cabinet position. The democratic party has abandoned her. McCain and the country could use the help. Good can still come from all of this… finding it may be our test.

    • Ferd McBerfle

That would be a win-win scenario for all involved, especially the electorate.

    • wodiej

I think it would be foolish for McCain to not give Hillary a cabinet position somewhere. She is so smart and could make more of a contribution and have a bigger impact than if she is just a Senator. She has leadership, she has the knowledge, she works across the aisles. Hope he does. When Bobo is leaving w his tail between his legs w still no resume, Hillary will be blazing trails. Perhaps a cabinet position is better suited for her than being President. We don’t know.

The next President will inherit this mess. It is extremely important that both these candidates be part of the solution since one of them will inherit it in less than 4 months. So Reid told McCain to come back and now says stay away. And Hollywood is rolling around naked in their money while the economy tanks. Democrats continue to look like a bunch of immoral, selfish, illogical morons. If the economy tanks people won’t be worried about going to the latest movie. Frankly, there is about one a year that I think is worth bothering with. So no moviegoers, no money for Hollywood. Maybe they can crawl out of their hole then to make a worthy contribution.

    • Docelder

I swear to God, lord please forgive me but this has to be said. I dont even care if this comment gets scrubbed. But I am so GD tired of people on these blogs on Taylor Marsh and Huffington post constantly saying we are going to be killed. WTF? What is the Democratic parties fixation with using “fear mongering” as a strategy? Do they fucking get the fact that this is our JOB and we HAVE to deploy? Its bad enough we leave our loved ones behind but its fucking cruel to constantly say we are going to DIE everytime something does not go Obama’s way!

Dont they understand family and friends are already stressed without having to listen to the MSM and blogs keep saying if “Mccain does this, the troops are going to die” if “Mccain does that we need to order coffins”. This one bastard on Taylor Marsh who I would love to snatch his ass bald actually stated that if he wins he was going to invest into a company that makes coffins and body bags. I am goddamn furious right now!

How the hell would they feel if someone was constantly saying that about someone they cared about? There fucking pathetic assholes that lack compassion. I swear if I was not banned on Taylors blog I would send her ass a message she would never forget. I cannot believe this is the same person from the primaries. I understand she stated she was for the Dem nominee whoever that may be. But one of her posters “lifetheroc” or some shit like that is on my shit list. If these bastards cant support the military and stand behind us then they can take there sorry good for nothing asses downrange and stand in front of us.

For 19 months I have put up with these unpatriotic its all about Obama fools as they get away with this shit. If they dont love this country somebody should ship there asses to another country. I have been treated better by the damn local nationals in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq than these Obama bots. I am tired of them constantly using scare tactics to gain support for Obama. Dont they know we can fucking READ!? They promote hatred. Obama inspires straight hatred. The Democratic party seems to not give a shit as long as they gain the White House. We never NEVER had this problem before Obama came on the scene. They make me sick. Literally sick. They have no idea what it’s like, they dont care as long as they get Obama.

We are not ornaments, something to be taken down and used to prove he should be in the white house. If he cant close the deal why the fuck do they have to use our deaths as a means to keep the people of this country in fear? Do they know what its like or have any idea to be on a convoy to Taji on black out drive no lights dark roads praying your ass dont run over an IED? Being Convoy Commander? Responsible for not only the soldiers in that convoy but the local nationals as well? Being the gunner? Wondering if you actually have what it in you to take someone elses life to protect not just your own but everyone elses? Or losing a soldier and having to write that letter to there family? Process the paperwork? Be in charge as a female to lead a convoy from A to B with local nationals in a country that dont give a shit about women, dont respect them and have to abide by there fucked up rules in there country because they happen to be on your convoy?

Or working in a warehouse where you have to order those body bags they love to bring up where some units actually get issued those body bags in question as part of there issue once they get to Kuwait before moving on to Baghdad.

I hope these idiots one day reap what they sow times ten.

    One-On-One With Sarah Palin

CBS) When CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Wednesday, she focused on the economy – but also addressed reports that the lobbying firm of Sen. John McCain’s campaign manager received payments from the controversial mortgage giant Freddie Mac until last month. Couric asked for her reaction to that.

Sarah Palin: My understanding is that Rick Davis recused himself from the dealings of the firm. I don’t know how long ago, a year or two ago that he’s not benefiting from that. And you know, I was – I would hope that’s not the case.

Katie Couric: But he still has a stake in the company so isn’t that a conflict of interest?

Palin: Again, my understanding is that he recused himself from the dealings with Freddie and Fannie, any lobbying efforts on his part there. And I would hope that’s the case because, as John McCain has been saying, and as I’ve on a much more local level been also rallying against is the undue influence of lobbyists in public policy decisions being made.

Next, Couric asked about the $700 billion government bailout of bad debt – and whether she supports it.

Palin: I’m all about the position that America is in and that we have to look at a $700 billion bailout. And as Sen. McCain has said unless this nearly trillion dollar bailout is what it may end up to be, unless there are amendments in Paulson’s proposal, really I don’t believe that Americans are going to support this and we will not support this. The interesting thing in the last couple of days that I have seen is that Americans are waiting to see what John McCain will do on this proposal. They’re not waiting to see what Barack Obama is going to do. Is he going to do this and see what way the political wind’s blowing? They’re waiting to see if John McCain will be able to see these amendments implemented in Paulson’s proposal.

Couric: Why do you say that? Why are they waiting for John McCain and not Barack Obama?

Palin: He’s got the track record of the leadership qualities and the pragmatism that’s needed at a crisis time like this.

Couric: But polls have shown that Sen. Obama has actually gotten a boost as a result of this latest crisis, with more people feeling that he can handle the situation better than John McCain.

Palin: I’m not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who’s more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who’s actually done it?

Couric: If this doesn’t pass, do you think there’s a risk of another Great Depression?

Palin: Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on. Not necessarily this, as it’s been proposed, has to pass or we’re going to find ourselves in another Great Depression. But, there has got to be action – bipartisan effort – Congress not pointing fingers at one another but finding the solution to this, taking action, and being serious about the reforms on Wall Street that are needed.

Couric: Would you support a moratorium on foreclosures to help average Americans keep their homes?

Palin: That’s something that John McCain and I have both been discussing – whether that … is part of the solution or not. You know, it’s going to be a multi-faceted solution that has to be found here.

Couric: So you haven’t decided whether you’ll support it or not?

    Palin: I have not.

Couric: What are the pros and cons of it do you think?

Palin: Oh, well, some decisions that have been made poorly should not be rewarded, of course.

    Couric: By consumers, you’re saying?

Palin: Consumers – and those who were predator lenders also. That’s, you know, that has to be considered also. But again, it’s got to be a comprehensive, long-term solution found … for this problem that America is facing today. As I say, we are getting into crisis mode here.

Couric: You’ve said, quote, “John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business.” Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?

Palin: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie – that, that’s paramount. That’s more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

Couric: But he’s been in Congress for 26 years. He’s been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

Palin: He’s also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he’s been talking about – the need to reform government.

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you’ve said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

Couric: I’m just going to ask you one more time – not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring them to you.

Katie did a terrible job. She asked Sarah Palin questions that she should be asking John McCain.
Of course, if she had been interviewing Obama, she would probably have been giggling and flustered.
Plese go there and comment. Not many yet, but the Obamafans are making fun of Palin. She needs our support.

That last answer is NOT good.

  • jangles

I think McCain should go to DC to work on a resolution. Send Sarah to MS. Friday night McCain should go to MS at the last moment for the debate. That would rattle obama’s cage.

    Hey, B.O., COUNTRY FIRST.
    I’m with McCain.

Take care of the country now, prep for a debate LATER.

    Soldier4Hillary,
Comments on Obot blogs are brainf**ts. If they weren’t spewing that smelly garbage, they’d be robbing liquor stores.

    McCain aide hits ‘desperate’ Reid

Brian Rogers brings the bipartisan comity:

While Senator McCain has suspended campaigning in order to return to Washington and lend his assistance to the negotiations now underway on Capitol Hill, Senator Reid has put out a statement informing McCain that his presence would ‘not be helpful.’ In fact, this is quite a reversal from yesterday, when Senator Reid told reporters ‘We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.’

Unfortunately, Senator Reid is putting partisan politics ahead of the business of the American people. But there should be no mistake: 24 hours ago Reid and his Democratic colleagues on the Hill couldn’t have been more desperate for Senator McCain’s help in resolving this crisis. Now they’ve got it.

  • Mandelay

Yes McCain is way down in the polls today (a reversal of his posiiton two weeks ago). Yes it’s not a good time to go into a debate when you’ve just experienced a quick reversal of fortune in the polls. That said, Mac has a great idea. All members of Congress should get there asses back to D.C. to roll up their sleeves, argue over the particulars, and pass a plan that will get meaningful, positive results. Mac is right to go back to D.C. and since there are two more debates, postponing/canceling one is not as important as the issue on the table. And Hillary should get her ass back to D.C., too. She’s supposed to be in Michigan, stumping for Obama. This economic issue is more important. Hills, get on a plane and go back to the Senate. And Obama, you with your history of voting “present” in the Illinois Senate. Get your ass back to D.C, too. You need to take “ownership” of whatever bi-partisan decision is made for the good of the country. This is not the time to abstain or say you were out of town. All elected asses back to D.C., pronto. You all work for us. Now get busy.
