Obama: Call me if you need me. [Update on Meeting with Bush]

Obama made a stunning gaffe in his press conference this afternoon. Responding to McCain suspending his campaign to address the economic crisis, Obama said that if they [Congress] need me, they’ll call me.

Yes, Obama wants to continue with his campaigning and the upcoming debate rather than show leadership and fulfill his role as Senator. In what has to be the quote of the day, if not the election, Obama said:

“Apparently, this was something that, you know, he was more decisive about…”—Barack Obama speaking about John McCain action to stop campaigning.

Wow! There could be no further contrast in leadership between these two men. McCain rolls up his sleeves and says ‘let’s get something done.’ And Obama says ‘call me if you need me.’

Update: Bush will meet with both candidates Thursday …

Yes, Obama went on to explain:

“I believe that we should continue to have the debate,” he said. “I think that it makes sense for us to present ourselves before the American people, to talk about the nature of the problems that we’re having in our financial system, to talk about how it relates to our global standing in the world, what implications it has for our national security, how it relates to critical questions, like the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“We’ve both got big planes. We’ve painted our slogans on the sides of them. They can get us from Washington, D.C., to Mississippi fairly quickly.”—Barack Obama as quoted by Shailagh Murray in the Washington Post.

When given an opportunity to serve his nation in a time of severe crisis, Barrack Obama decided that his own personal gain was more important.

Stunning!

Sen. Lindsey Graham just made a great set of remarks to Fox News’s “America’s Election HQ” host:

“We don’t want a debate! We want a solution. We’ve got 40 days to debate. We’ve been begging this guy to debate us for six months now. What we need is for the Congress to answer the call of Secretary Paulson and Ben Bernanke and Warren Buffett and every other smart person to not allow a financial PEARL HARBOR to happen.”

Host: Senator Obama has suggested that a president needs to be able to do a number of things at the same time …. like have a debate for example and be able to have his finger on the pulse of what is going on in Washington. Is he right about that?

Sen. Graham: I would think that if the president were overseas right now and talking to a foreign leader, they would get on a plane and come back home because the country is experiencing a financial crisis. If either one of these people were president, and they were overseas talking about some foreign policy matter, I hope they would have the good judgment to jump on a plane and come back to the United States and call an emergency session of the Congressional leaders to avoid what Warren Buffett calls a ‘financial Pearl Harbor’. That to me is what we need to do.

We have 40 days left to debate. We may not have but a few days left to protect American savings and financial institutions from collapse, and after the two days you’ve seen here in Congress of nothing but posturing, we’re running out of time.

UPDATE via CNN’s Political Ticker at 8:21 p.m. ET:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Bush has asked both Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama to join him for a meeting at the White House Thursday afternoon to discuss the economic bailout plan, a White House officials said.

“The President called Sen. Obama tonight around 7:30 pm,” said Dana Perino, White House press secretary. “The president has invited the bicameral and bipartisan leadership, and the two senators running for president, to the White House tomorrow to work on driving to a bipartisan and timely solution.”

Obama’s campaign said in a statement that he has accepted the invitation. …

Oh my!! They are now reporting that the stock market will crash if a bill isn’t passed by Friday. This is a serious matter that needs to be dealt with now!!!! WHERE ARE YOU NOBAMA? STILL MEMORIZING FOR THE DEBATE? I hate Obama. I really don’t care what happens to him as long as he doesn’t step foot in the Oval Office.

I hope this shows the American people once and for all. Obama just runs for office — he does not govern.

The leader of the free world needs to be able to chew gum and walk at the same time. Too challenging for McCain? Has he not yet heard of the Blackberry? The telephone? Though the real reason, as ABC is reporting, is to delay this debate to next Thursday thereby delaying the VP debate. Isn’t Sarah ready yet?

      • jrterrier

right. if you are going to commit a trillion dollars of taxpayer money, what we need is a senator that will make the decision based on blackberry messages sent to him by his aides. Obama continues to prove that he is W in DEM clothes.

Please. Who in the Senate follows him? The Conservatives despise him for his past “sins” of not toeing the right-wing line all the time. They’re the ones who need to be brought along. He should send his economic adviser, Phil Gramm, instead. Oh, I forget, it was Phil Gramm’s deregulation plan — pushed primarily by McCain — that got us into this.
Trust me, nobody under 60 understands his resistance to the modern world of communications. He’s just showboating, throwing a Hail Mary pass as Krauthammer said tonight on Fox. Even Fox!

the bill you speak of, was passed by over 90 of the senators. it was signed into law by Bill Clinton. It was bipartisan bill. So, don’t blame McCain. And this crisis can be put at the feet of FannieMae/Freddie Mac, which was 100% supported by DEMS.

It was Barney Frank leading the Dems against the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005 co-sponsored by McCain that got us into this mess. The huge growth in the subprime and Alt-A loan portfolios of Fannie and Freddie could not have occurred, and the scale of the financial meltdown would have been substantially less. Deregulation actually made possible bank acquisition of Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch, saving billions in likely resolution costs for taxpayers. McCain knows what he is doing. He has the support of conservatives in Congress, as he has sided with them on most issues; his 100% ACU rating is evidence of that. We pay him to be in Congress, and his first responsibility to voters is to be in the midst of the crisis, not phoning in his 2 cents from his Blackberry. God, you people are annoying.

          • Steven Mather

Too many partisans are willing to post lies or half-truths as a way of scoring points. Rose is posting lies and half-truths as a way to smear McCain.

It is a matter of public record that McCain was aware of the problems at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac and that he was thwarted in his attempt to address these problems by Democrats and Republicans. It is also a matter of record that Obama has received much more in donations from the troubled companies than McCain, even though McCain has been in the Senate forever and Obama is new.

That McCain is a Republican who tends against regulation is true, but it is a lie to say he is for the current regulatory situation or responsible for the mess.

We should judge people on what they actually do and say. With so many lies and half-truths floated about by supporters of both campaigns, how are Americans to make an honestly-informed decision? Frankly, it is unpatriotic to taint a person’s choice for president by knowingly lying or distorting the facts about the candidates. If we don’t know the truth, the freedom to choose loses its’ meaning.

            SM

            • McKatmoon

The congress had more than one chance to address this problem in the last 2 years; all of them of them are responsible, everyone should be back in Washington right now. The buyers who just had to have that European trip thanks to taking out a second mortgage are responsible, the only ones who don’t have a damned thing to do with this, are honest people, who made their payments, not looking for more than just doing right by the loans they took out.

However, there are several different ideas on the solution and Congress – of which Barry is a part – needs to deal with it. They can’t deal with it from the campaign trail. Good grief, this will impact everyone in this country, and nations all over the world. Do you get that? Do you get what the problem even is? Are you in grade school?

Rose… bottom line it was DEMS that encouraged the gigantic growth of sub-prime…they were thinking…more americans in houses

The Repukes were thinking…GREAT, we’ll bundle the subprimes with the good loans and sell them to OTHER INVESTORS (like pension plans, mutual funds, etc) and make a butt load of money

McCain has raised issues about this…but since both parties were feeding at the trough…neither Republican nor Democrats have done anything about this.

People who paid attention KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME for over 4 years… as soon as the housing bubble burst and those ARMs came due.

We cannot let the failure spread. If cash flow disappears, so does the capital to stay up stay up with growth. And in a global economy…there will be someone else to do the work even if Americans can’t do it. That leads to job loss, poverty and ultimately to a very serious contraction.

The only thing the Congress is debating is how much they can end up stiffing the American taxpayer for, while their wealthy friends walk of thier gazillions.

I think I’d like the new POTUS to be INVOLVED in that decision. Who are they going to protect… their friends or the avg joe?

Action and inaction certainly speaks volumes at this point about who is really interested in looking out of our interests. Ultimately, we’ll have to see what McCain is in support of… and Barry… well, he’s just going to keep voting present because the most import thing to him is to win his next election cycle…the only legacy of his entire political career.

The action seeks an injunction preventing the senator from continuing his candidacy and a court order enjoining the DNC from nominating him next week, all on grounds that Sen. Obama is constitutionally ineligible to run for and hold the office of President of the United States.
“I filed this action at this time,” Berg stated, “to avoid the obvious problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these issues after Obama is nominated

Re: the MSM spin for Obama. While checking out ABC’s site to find out about their stunning news that Obo is suddenly ahead by 11 based on the perception that McCain is responsible for the banking meltdown while Obo will fix it (I don’t know where they get these ideas…ahem.) buried in the ABC New story was the fact that McCain is basically the deal maker on this bailout. Should he decide to vote against it, it won’t pass. Obviously, the stakes are high and he’s negotiating whether he will support the bailout. So, he needs to be in Washington.

    • Mountain Girl

oh right, he is so scared of Obambi he just created this financial crisis for personal gain…pathetic.

Troll. Filthy Obama troll. Debate that.

    • Jess Terr

yeah, and that’s why NObama wouldn’t show up to the many many townhall meetings McCain urged NO to do MONTHS ago. NObama is upset that his Cliff notes will have to be re-memorized thus, leaving less time to COMMUNITY ORGANIZE the election fraud.
NObama, NOshow to get the job done.
      NObama. NOt ready to lead.

      COUNTRY FIRST!!!

    • mcpalin hill

John — Its Obama who’s the coward. He is afraid to lead. What a fraud he is. McCain would wipe the floor with Obama on Foreign Policy. But right now saving this nation’s economy is more important. McCain doesn’t pretend he’s a Messiah like Obama. He is just a principled man who was born to lead.

    • Latina

      Hey JMC IS A C:

The only coward is your Bambi baby. On this one, he won’t even vote PRESENT, for then to say… I did not vote fot it. Too much ego, too much smooth talk. You Obullish trolls better learn some HISTORY. Mc Cain has been subjected to more pain than all of us toguether, and called a hero even by your bluffer Messiah.

Obummer DIDN’T WANT TO FURTHER DEBATE HILLARY -his OWN party – after he was chewed up and spit out by her (Hillary)! That last debate he did with her SCARED HIM SH@TLESS! He’s now refused ANY townhall meetings with McCain and just agreed (through much pressure) to do 3 debates. If this debate doesn’t happen on Friday, he – Obummer – is scared to death that he’ll FORGET EVERYTHING HE MEMORIZED FROM HIS notes and aides on WHAT to say in the debates – and HOW to answer the questions.

      Obummer is SCARED!

Yet his lead in the polls continues to grow…

He disgusts me!! He has a great opportunity to show us what he is made of in congress, and he just wants to continue the campaign. What will he say if he is elected and war breaks out? Call me if you need me! Ill be at the ranch!!

      • Steve_in_KC

Actually, his lead is heading downward this week again. It’s still a dead heat tie, within the margin of error. But technically, BO has lost a few points this week in most polls.

Im hoping that once this bailout package is finally passed, and the debates occur, McCain can improve and win in the end.

        • Darryl

This happens every weekend. If they conduct a poll on the weekend all of sudden obama is up. Why is that? Because kids are answering their phones and lying that they can vote.

      • Kathy

This is what kills me. His poll lead grows because people think he can better solve the economic crisis better. Are you kidding me? Has anyone looked at Chicago? McCain came out looking like a leader today. He’s ready to get to work. Obama wants to issue a joint statement. Actions/words. Sound familiar? And all Obama really cared about was being sure everyone knew he called McCain first! O ended up looking like a baby.

kathy — In the Gallop Poll they admit to overpolling black voters and under polling whites. Also, Gallop used registered voters instead of likely voters. In short they are in Obama’s pocket and that poll is an out and out lie. Obama and McCain are in a statistical dead heat in the tracking polls.

      • brooklynlou

The pollsters never let you see the raw numbers, only the weighted results. The polls are nothing more than manufactured narrative.

        • mcpalin hill

brooklyn lou — you got it.

      • Peggy Sue

Give it a few days, Cynic. This was a stunning move for John McCain and only proves he has what it takes. While Obama muses on multi-tasking, McCain goes to Washington–to do the job he was elected to do. Ever see Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Yes, it’s romantic. But people desperately want a leader who is willing to put it on the line, do the right thing and the hell with personal/political consequences.

That’s not something Barack Obama has a clue about. He’s the professional “campaigner.”

Let’s see what the American public thinks about the doer vs. the talker.

      • mcpalin hill

cynic — Gallop weighted their polls numbers to favor Black Voters over White Voters. Obama isn’t leading — they are tied.

      • Hope Floats! Flush Twice!

It didn’t look like it’s grown in the past two days. It looks like you’ve never seen a big one before. It explains why you support Obama and his vibrating phone.

  • http://villamedia.wordpress.com/ RepublicanChick

He said it earlier to his fellow Senators. Senator Joe Lieberman stated that in a call into Sean Hannity’s show earlier today.

Thank you for posting this Matthew.

Obama has told the American people for months that he was “change we could believe in”, but what he did today was punted. In essence, he voted “present” on another important issue involving the American people.

    • Amy Crunch

This whole ‘present’ thing is bullshit you know. It should be changed to ‘absent’.

      • http://villamedia.wordpress.com/ RepublicanChick

Well, there is an “absent” choice, but when voting you’re given the choice to vote “no”, “yes”, or “present”.

If he doesn’t get his rear end to DC, then by all means you are correct. However, if Obama is true to form–he’ll let the rest of the Senate come up with a workable economic package and then Obama will swoop in to vote.

You don’t think the Wonder Child would actually put forth the effort or time to work on behalf America, do you? :-)

The way the MSM is reporting this situation, America is getting a wake up call not only to the bias of the MSM for Obama, but also the MSM’s attitude towards their own money, after spending millions to set up for the friday night debate.

  • untilthelastdogdies

As usual, this is not the narrative that the MSM is pursuing.

They prefer to focus on his “multi-tasking” statement.

The smirky “call me if you need me” attitude isn’t being reported. Typical.

    • Amy Crunch

Yes. This is tantamount to the 03:00 AM call. But they’re all part of the government and all should be contributing.

Obama is making a huge mistake, as usual. He said, “call me if you need me” and thinks that if he shows up after it’s too late or at the last minute, he can get the credit for “saving the day”. Obama is nothing but a lazy ass frat boy who wants everyone else to do the work for him. I wonder how many “What Obama meant” statements will come out of his surrogates? The remark he made about waiting for the champagne cork to pop was so insensitive to those who are about to lose their homes and business’. They don’t care about champagne, even after this bill is passed, they are still going to be up to their necks in debt.

    • Amy Crunch

The remark he made about waiting for the champagne cork to pop

    • mcpalin hill

    • jbjd

President Bush just announced he invited both BO and JMc, and Congressional leaders to the White House, tomorrow, to discuss the problem and work out a solution. Both men have agreed to attend.

  • http://www.lostinspacetv.com/ The Robot

Obama looked his true self today: weak – a man of inaction. You know what, don’t hold your breath waiting for that call. We don’t need your sorry ass. We need real leaders like Mac and Hillary.

    • Phil Murphy

Is McCain on the Banking Committee? Can he call constituents from anywhere in the world. Can he fly back for votes? That’s all Reid wanted him for – make yourself available by at least keeping in touch with Washington.

McCain has no background in banking. He got his money from Daddy and now Mommy. He had a hard time in the Grocery Store ( near the cheese), and he admitted he is not good on the economy.

So what do you expect him to do? Talk about firing people? Make a speech?

      • beebop

As a taxpayer and someone watching her investments tank, I expect him to do what he is PAID to do … and that is find solutions for Americans. Why do you HATE AMERICA?

        • Karina

To beebop: With all due respect, I, too, am a taxpayer, with a tanking 401(K), and two small children that I cannot imagine being able to send to college in ten years. I imagine my opinion on the cancellation of the debates is different from yours. How on earth does that mean i “HATE AMERICA.”

And my opinion is this: Both candidates need to be in front of the electorate, debating and telling us what they are going to do about the economy, because if you think this mess is gonna be cleaned up over the weekend, you really need to educate yourself.

I’m an undecided, btw. I will tell you one thing really bothering me, though. Why is McCain still attending Clinton’s Global Initiative Conference tomorrow, given that he’s comparing this crises to 9/11? So, he can show up at the big wig conference, but can’t keep his date with the voters/taxpayers (who will probably be paying for this mess?) Just askin’

          • mcpalin hill

karina — what is more important? Allowing this country to go into a Depression or debating Foreign Policy. I am sad at how stupid some Americans can be.

          • WildChild

Wouldn’t a better plan be to do something now rather then wait until late January to be sworn and and then start acting?

          • Postmaster

2 candidates standing up in a debate, telling us what they would do about the economy does NOT compare to going back to Washington and actually working toward a solution.

        • Phil Murphy

Beebop – My investments are less but haven’t tanked. Check out LPL. They dont sell product, but only act as good stewards. I lost ( on paper ) about 5% over the past week. I have not done good in the past year and a half, but when the economy comes back, so will our portfolio.

The secret is diversification. And not operating in a panic – which is easier said than done. I trust my folks, but its still hard over the past year.

          Good luck with the investments.

      • Annie Oakley

According to George Stephanopoulis at ABC, McCain may hold the key to the vote. The Ds are afraid that the Rs might decide to make the base happy and vote against bailing out these undeserving a-holes who created this crisis.

There’s pressure from Wallow St. to get her done pronto. The dems are afraid they’ll vote for it and the Reps will pull a Lucy on the football. It’s all riding on McCain. Bummer for you, huh?

  • Phil Murphy

It was clear to me that the Senate Banking committee is the braintrust, and the people who will clearly put together the majority of bill-details that need to come together.

The idea of McCain coming to Washington, when he has flip flopped on the very causes, and with his calling for the firing of Cox, clearly showed that he was out of touch with the important details.

Obama is not braintrust on this either. Both can help by phone to rally support to for a concensus, and both should leave open the option of flying back immediately should they need to to make important votes.

I worked in San Francisco but spent about three months a year in New Orleans. During that time, we had surveys by the Department of Health Services in California. At any point, my wife, and my staff knew that I would fly back if needed, and I made myself available 24/7.

So its clear to most sensible people that McCain can make himself available, and prove to the American People on Friday that he can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Again, the economy and the banking industry are not his strong suit. He can do what all the other senators are doing and make time available to discuss, and to vote when they need to.

    • jangles

Obama on the economic crisis—looks like Katrina to me. If you think that you are some kind of a leader/hero because you stay off doing your thing and, oh by the way, call me if you need me. Forget it. You are not recognized as a leader. The people around you just know they can get things done more effectively if you are not there.

NObama. NO WAY NO HOW NOT NOW NOT EVER

So glad I left the democratic party, what a laughingstock.

    • Deep Truths

Maybe McCain wants to do more than just vote. Maybe he wants to be in on the committee meetings, immerse himself in the details because, more than likely, he will be the next president. Just maybe.

    • Hope Floats! Flush Twice!

It was clear to me that the Senate Banking committee is the braintrust

Oh, yeah. Sen. Chris “Countrywide VIP ” Dodd is on this. Everyone else can just phone in their vote.

      • TeakwoodKite

How is the 30 billion Bears and Stern thing working for that brain trust now?

You think that was not a red flag? Hwat did Dodd do…he let his buddies walk.

The thing that amazes me is that McCain raised this issue in 2005. And now that McCain is putting it out there and Obama is offering the Rumsfield Screw driver and calling it doing something, all I hear is noise from the Dems.

You can play this two ways for McCain,
He is doing a purely a political move or he is old enough to remember the Great Depression and truely believes that this is a FUBAR turtle on a fence.

No matter how you choose to play it it is one one angle. ME.

You can talk about it or you can DO something about it.

If you look beyond any political motive for McCain suspending his campaign, it comes down to what the candidates priorities are.

The way the cookie crumbles for Obama and the debate that was… is bad for Obama any way you slice it. Why?

Many people want to hear this debate, and while it is important to hear what ideas the candidates have, it is more important to have a say in what happens, especially if you are going to be in charge of this mess as POTUS.

BO doesn’t get it. He thinks the DNC leadership has his back. NOT.

Respectfully, Phil Murphy, this is not a time to be on standby. This is a time of life and death for the economy. Both Senators accepted it on their speech.

Voting for ANYONE is better than not voting, and voting for Obama over a candidate that chose a stealth candidate for VP, that no one is allowed to speak with is very disconcerting.

          • Postmaster

The media, specifically MSNBC,CNN,Abc,nbc, brought this on themselves. Instead of treating Palin with the respect she deserves as a Governor, they immediate;y started with their sexism crap, trashing her, trashing her children. What about Charlie Gibson and the STARK difference in the questions asked Obama? I would shun that bunch of sorry excuses too.

McCain gambled on this cynical political ploy and lost. McCain will be seen as a desperate coward to scared to debate Senator Obama.

The American public isn’t buying it. They want the debate to proceed as scheduled. They see this as a cynical political ploy exactly for what is it. McCain/Palin is doomed.

        • Darryl

Would you like me to post article from just a couple of months ago where Obama was saying debates weren’t important and they had had enough of them.

        • Peggy Sue

Oh yes, Freedom Fighter. We certainly want to watch a debate while our savings go out the window, our credit ratings are zilched and our quality of life is bought and sold to the highest bidder.

Have you lost your mind? The very quality of our lives, the fate of the nation is being decided in the next few days.

In this case words are simply empty words. I have children. I’m not looking to strap them with debt that will bury us all with neither oversight nor responsibility. I’m not willing to sit by while the the Left Wing pads this bill with bad car loans and credit card debt and unpaid school loans.

PAY YOUR OWN WAY!!! Take frigging responsibility for Christ’s sake: financial institutions, speculators and individual personal craziness [otherwise known as entitlements].

Obama can debate himself into eternity for all I care. He might do a better job that way.

If McCain is willing to take the risk to suspend a Presidential election to do the right thing then I say: this man has my vote!

        • Jillie

that’s why bo refused to debate hillary and then refused to debate mccain.

Yes feedom fighter, Americans are not buying it, not because of the ridiculous contention written on the web site you mentioned, but because money is running short!!!!!,We have no money. Banks are bankrupt, our economy is in the virge of crashing…. We have to take trillions on loan to the foreign lenders to keep afloat, we may wake up next Monday in the worst depression, and you want THIS FRIDAY to hear them??? Money talks, bullshit walks!!!
We can have the debate anytime before election. But this emergency operation has to be now or the patient might die.
Listen… Go to U tube and you can listen a month time of their speeches, put them toguether and you have your little debate and calm down your temper tantrum.

    • KC

Bullshit. McCain is willing to lead and make decisions. Obama hides in Florida and wants to talk as the country melts down.

      • Freedom Fighter

McCain is ducking the debate because he isn’t as intelligent and as articulate as Senator Obama. America will see McCain as a political coward and a light weight.

        • Seattle Moss

After Bush’s speech tonight you will be quaking in your boots at the magnitude of this crisis.
McCain did the right thing for the country and all attention from now till Monday will be on rescuing this country form another great depression.

          • tampagurl

I’m listening to Bush now and you’re right Seattle, We’re in big trouble. Obama doesn’t take anything seriously. God help us if he is elected.

        • WildChild

or they like most of us, the country will see McCain doing his job and BOBO (and his supporters) whining and crying because BOBO didn’t get to deliver his lines.

        • Ferd McBerfle

So a debate is more important than our economy. You show your true allegiance and it isn’t to your fellow American.

Shut up you half-witted obamabot. There isn’t a single person on this site aside from you that actually cares about what you are told to think.

        • KC

LOL. The obot thinks his leader is “intelligent and articulate.” Tell me, obot, if Obama is so smart, why did it take him 20 years to figure out his pastor was an anti-American racist?

Obama is simply hiding in Florida because he doesn’t know how to lead and is not smart enough to know what to do. He’s just upset because if they postpone the debate, he’ll have to memorize all those lines all over again.

        • Newly Independent

          McCain is ducking the debate…

          Liar.

McCain wants to POSTPONE the debate so that he can return temporarily to his job as a U.S. Senator to fix a FAR MORE SERIOUS situation. Just like ANY true leader would do.

The Obamabrats everywhere – especially the MSM – are just angry and extremely pissed that they won’t be able to stage another dog-and-pony show in Obama’s favor. Once again, McCain has turned Obama’s silly games completely upside down!

They couldn’t stage their phony Obama shows in real town-hall meetings. Which is why that coward Obama ran from every single town hall meeting that he himself proposed to McCain just after the primaries. The silly MSM and the rest of Obama’s scummy backers know that the ONLY way they can try to make Obama look “presidential” is to prop his phony ass up on TV.

Carrying on with a debate in the middle of an unprecended, SERIOUS national financial crisis = old politics.

Temporarily suspending your own campaign to focus first on an unprecended, SERIOUS national financial crisis = the REAL change America needs in leadership.

          John McCain –
          COUNTRY FIRST.

        • Dan

Excuse me, but wasn’t it Obama who originally agreed to do 10 “town hall” debates with McCain three months ago and then backed out?

Hasn’t it been McCain who’s been calling for debates for the past three months but has been met with either lame excuses or dead silence from the Obama campaign?

And if McCain was really interested in “ducking” a debate with Obama, wouldn’t he be calling for the debate to be cancelled outright, rather than just postponed?

FF, you really are a complete idiot.

You people are hilarious. Here is the full quote from above: “`I thought this was something he was mulling over, apparently this was something he was more decisive about in his own mind,” Obama said at a hastily arranged news conference in Clearwater, Florida.”

The point was McCain and Obama were discussing how they should handle a joint statement and McCain misled Obama about his intentions and issued a unilateral statement.

I suppose it would have to be. McCain is an elected politician on his way back to Washington to do the political job his voters elected him to do. What a concept.

          • Newly Independent

            Really.

Obama ran from debates and town hall meetings against McCain all during the summer.

Obama ran from Hillary too. During the primaries, remember?

NOW all of a sudden we’re supposed to believe that Obama’s interested in debating the issues???

            LMAO!!!

Why is Obama afraid to temporarily suspend his campaign like McCain’s doing to help in this serious financial crisis?

Is it because Obama’s afraid that he will forget all of the last-minute studying on foreign policy he’s been cramming in? Afraid to forget his one-liners?

Or is the reason more sinister?

Is Obama afraid for the entire country to see his incompetence as a U.S. Senator?

Or worse – is it that Obama doesn’t want America to see him side with the very Wall Street financial institutions that are responsible for this extremely serious financial crisis? The same institutions that are backing his presidential campaign?

            • WildChild

yeah, really. McCain is a senator and he’s going back to do what senators are paid to do. America is in trouble. I doubt that McCain gave BOBO a second thought when the made the decision to go back.

        • Freedom Fighter

It was a despicable act on McCain’s part to pull a political gimmick during one of the most severe economic crisis in American history. John McCain should be ashamed of himself. • http://mybluecountry.googlepages.com/whattheobamademocratsaresayingposter Linda

You know, when I saw Free Republic report that yesterday, I was saying no way.

But then Obama announced today that he is very happy with his choice for VP and then all those familiar words of not being able to disown his typical white Grand mother or his reverend or unconditional support for Filibuster FISA came to mind and I just thought that sounded like the prelude to Obama throwing Biden under the bus. LOL

But no way could he do that now, or even Hillary accept, they would lose any respect possible.

As poor a judgement as it was, Backtrack Obambi made his choice. He chose poorly, but he chose. lol

      won’t happen.

    • ritamary

Fox is reporting it as an internet rumor. And Bill Clinton said on The View that Hillary does not want to be vice president.

      • sowsear

But, he said, she’d do whatever the Party asked her to do. I personally think that was agreed upon the day that BO met Bill last week (or so ago).I think their internal polls show a problem and people are telling BO he needs HRC to win. I do believe that Biden will be sick, very sick, in a short while. Dems spoke of their own Oct. surprise.
More Dems will vote for BO if Hill runs with him, so we should be speaking against that, just in case.
I have said many times (borrowed that phrase from you know who)that I will not vote for BO even if JC runs with him and has a note from The Blessed Mother.

        • Postmaster

If Biden tries to bow out with a medical issue, he’ll shoot himself in the foot as a Senator as well. Logic will dictate that if he is seriously ill he won’t be able to do his job as Senator either.

    • http://deleted YES HRC

My dream is that Biden drops out and BO can’t find anyone else who’ll say yes. Bet that’s never happened before. No veep. Po’ bama.

    • http://! Clinton Fan

Well, that’s a bit problematic, since President Clinton just went on the VIEW and said “She’d have done it –reluctantly–if she had been asked, but it wasn’t what she wanted–she doesn’t really want that job, she’s a US senator and can make a bigger impact in that job.”

      Or words to that effect.

If Biden leaves, maybe “Countrywide Chris” Dodd with his old-ass self and his too-young kids by his trophy wife will hop into the breach.

  • jangles

If Obama is so good at multi-tasking why is he taking off all these days to prep for a “political debate”? But not the country’s biggest economic crisis in 80 years? May I ask please, do we necessarily want our president to be multi-tasking in the eye of an economic melt-down and multi-tasking with “politics as usual”? I think McCain clearly framed his statement on this as a request to Obama to join him in a bi-partisan way. By rejecting McCain’s invitation, who turns the event into partisan politics?

I can’t begin to tell you how much Obambi becoming POTUS scares me. I found my husband dead unexpectedly in July. I couldn’t imagine staying in our home so I moved to my daughter’s families home. I have a house on the market that needs to be sold. They live in a town that depends upon fa military weapons testing area or it’s survival. Needless to say I NEED McCain/Palin to win. Otherwise I may HAVE to move to another country with my family for survival.

    • Firefly

Oh my God – what you have been through, Talk2The Paw – I can’t even imagine. I’m so terribly sorry.

I’m still not convinced regular people are going to benefit from a $700 billion Wall Street bail-out.

I’ve listened to the testimony for the last few days and I’m still not sure just whose asses they’re actually concerned about saving. They say it’s my own. Really? How, exactly, is that?

And I’m not clear about where we’re going to get all that money, if Congress decides to give it to them. We’re running a killer deficit already.

Maybe Bush will explain it all in an hour or so.

    • Seattle Moss

Regular people will benefit if people like me can continue to get loans to modernize and expand my companies plant production.
Without capital companies fold and workers get laid off. Families suffer and jobs go away.

    • Karina

I know what you mean. Aren’t we the taxpayers (and our kids, and grandkids) going to be responsible? Someone’s gotta pay someday. Where is the $700 mil coming from? And, maybe I’m too stupid to understand, buy why do we bail out these investment banks that were unwilling in so many cases to renegotiate mortgages so that people could stay in their homes? And now we’re supposed to bail them out?

This whole thing is absolute despicable and I blame BOTH parties.

      • Mr.Murder

109th Congress had a GOP Preznit. Best look that way before you assign blame. Bush has been an obstructionist ever since Dems regained Congress.

What’s wrong with the so call high information Obot?

The tanking of AIG send a shock wave to the world’s financial market that’s make investor panic and gave green light to speculators. The govt was going to let small firms fold without lifting a finger, but this is too much a risk to ignore.

Short sell and sell off is running other financial company that’s in good shape to the ground, risk a lot of them going belly up. It’s never the rich who will suffer in a back market because they generally only invest no more than 50% of their asset in the market. It’s the average American’s retirement fund and 401K that will take the biggest hit, since they don’t generally have other savings.

What’s worst is the fact that those money leaving the market will go to oil, gold and other commodity speculation(people have to invest it somewhere). Didn’t you see the oil price up 16% in just one day? That’s inflation for you.

The tanking of financial company around the globe will dry up credit for companies big and small(as most corporation need credit for their operation) when the number of banks drop. There you will see record number of company out of business. And those able to get credit will be paying high interest. That translate to Huge job lost. It’s also worst for the housing market and more foreclosure as a result. The govt will also pay more interest on it’s debt and that means high debt.

High inflation, high interest, high unemployment and govt in default is very likely if the world financial market don’t regain it’s confidence. It’s those who live pay check to pay check that will hurt the most. Great depression is possible.

The reason this is needed to be done soon is the fact that the short selling of stock will resume soon and the investor are losing confident. If this last a couple weeks longer, you can relive the great depression again(unemployment, interest and inflation all in the high teens).

Now, does it make sense for everyone in the congress to haul ass back to DC to make it happen?

BTW, don’t bring up the part of not going back a week ago, because it was possible that a [plan was going to work out. The congress now is stalling, and the standard barer in both party should get their butt there to make a deal work, period.

  • KXT

I don’t think Obama will be of any help in the Senate. He is use to voting PRSENT when difficult decisions have to be made. Let John McCain handle this. Yesterday, Harry Reid was practicaly begging Mcain to come back and show some leadership. Well John McCain will get those dems and republs to pass an amended bill. Let them not sleep until a bill is agreed upon!!!!!! Make them work Johnny.

I am not interested inany OFreign Policy debate. We need a debate to be about the economy or just postpone it. Let Obama show up to the debate by himself while CNN has split view of John mcCain working in the senate.

    My 401K better be safe.

    Sen. Lindsey Graham just said:

If either one of these people [McCain or Obama] were president, and they were overseas talking about some foreign policy matter, I hope they would have the good judgment to jump on a plane and come back to the United States and call an emergency session of the Congressional leaders to avoid what Warren Buffett calls a ‘financial Pearl Harbor’.

    =============================================
Tonight the president will urge congress to work hard, fast and with the interest of the country to agree on a national financial rescue measure.

I hope he strongly urges every single sitting congressman and senator to: “Drop what you are doing in your campaigns and show up tomorrow morning in DC, because your country needs you here doing the job the citizens hired you to do.”

I hope he follows that plea with this: “Any member of the house or senate who does not report to work tomorrow morning with the conviction that they will stay until this emergency crisis is resolved should just go ahead resign from office now, because I will then convene congress by executive order, based the power and duty bestowed upon the president, by Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution. I will declare this crisis an ‘extraordinary occasion’ , and I will only adjourn them to such time as I think proper.”

The president has the power to Order Congress to Convene.

    U.S. Constitution:Article II – Executive Department. Section 3.
    ..he [the presiden] may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper;

If the president, in his 9pm ET address this evening, does not make that threat I suggest that everyone contact the Whitehouse tomorrow and demand that he use his power to Order all those deadbeat congressmen and senators back to work – Now!

    • http://www.governuts.us Agust304

So much for Obama being a “Leader”. He’s doing the senatorial equivalent of voting “Present”. He says he’ll show up if the vote is “close”. That way he doesn’t have to vote. So if things fail he can say he didn’t “Vote” for the bill. If things succeed he can say he “supported” the bill.

Typical Barack Obama. Run away from controversial issues and provide no leadership whatsoever.

During the efforts on immigration reforms they said Obama never contributed anything.

I’ll say it again: Obama is an empty suit who is being given a path to the White House based solely on race.

If you put a bunch of people in a room to try and solve a problem does anyone really think Obama’s advice would be sought? He would sit there like a potted plant. Everything Obama says comes from his 300 plus advisors and he is just spouting off their advice.

    “Johnson to lead Obama briefing

“Former Fannie Mae chairman Jim Johnson was dumped from Obama’s vice presidential search team, but he’s still playing a behind-the-scenes role on the campaign.

“Former Senator Tom Daschle, a top Obama backer, emailed a select list this afternoon that he and Johnson would be leading a briefing intended largely for Clinton’s campaign brain trust next month.

“Jim Johnson and I have scheduled another informal breakfast discussion and update on the campaign early next month,” he wrote to a list including Senator John Kerry, James Carville, and Richard Holbrooke, as well as Clinton’s former top campaign aides, including Howard Wolfson, Geoff Garin, and Harold Ickes.

“Johnson’s involvement comes at a moment when political association with the failed mortgage giants is particularly toxic. He was already the subject of a McCain ad attacking Obama.

“The October third breakfast is also a mark of the continuing effort to bring the ex-Clintonites into the Obama fold.”

Yup… he’s doing more than one thing at a time. Clothes. Shoes. Lighting. Debate Preparation. And poor McCain, he decides to do only one thing at a time … help save the U.S. finnancial/banking/economic systems. Obama, Obama, what did we do to deserve you?

Matthew, you nailed it. If there was ever an “in your face” distinction between these two candidates, it was this afternoon’s reaction to the financial meltdown and bailout debate.

That 3 p.m. call came today. McCain responded decisively; Obama is too busy campaigning and cramming for the debates.

This could be the deciding moment of the campaign: the man of action vs the man of cautious hesitation and soaring rhetoric.

        • Monet

Dick Morris’ take is Senator McCain will arm wrestle the Republicans into an agreement by stating if they don’t, the White House is lost on November 4th. But if they do come to an agreement with the Democrats, the White House will be well within their reach. Mr. Morris seemed to believe that Senator McCain holds the cards and is the one that can get Congress to come to an agreement on the bail out and save the economy. He seemed to think Senator McCain will have a triumph under his belt by the end of the weekend that will carry him to victory in November. And well, Senator Obama may have nailed a few too many nails into his coffin today with his plan to keep multi-tasking through the financial crisis.

I didn’t hear all of Mr. Morris’ comments, I was channel surfing and came in on the tail end of what he had to say. I think Mr. Morris may be right. Senator McCain is well respected in Congress – unlike Senator Obama who needs Speaker Pelosi to twist arms for him. Senator McCain’s arm twisting may produce results. Hopefully, the result will be a plan that does more good than harm.

    • Peggy Sue

How gracious of Obama to appear at the White House.

      What a circus!

      • requiredreading

I think that one reason Oblahblah’s camp decided on their idiotic “multi-tasking” approach to the McCain bombshell today is precisely because they know damn well that a) Obama has no bipartisan credentials in the Senate and b) he’s alienated even some members of his own party there. Whatever you say about McCain, it’s clear to all (e.g., the complimentary statements of Hillary and Biden) that he has the respect of his colleagues in the Senate. After BO’s pitiful record there (claiming to be on a committee he’s not a member of; not holding a single hearing on Afghanistan on the f.p. committee he was a member of), of course he’s looking for every excuse not to have to go back for something as inconsequential as saving the U.S. economy.

When Buffet and the Japanese banking industry are poaring billions into our financial institutions to shore up the ones on the verge of collapsing, President Bush’s plan is to write a check for $700 billion with no concrete plan of how it’s going to be spent, no plan for oversight, leave it to the next administration to figure it all out and nearly every financial expert says our economy is days away from collapsing – Senator Obama says this is a crisis that can be multi-tasked?

Thank goodness FDR didn’t feel that way when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and JFK didn’t take that view when the Soviets were moving missiles to Cuba. I know this is just a money crisis, not war. Why would Senator Obama care about money when he has friends willing to spend half a million or more of their own money to buy him a house?

We’ve had a multi-tasking president for the past eight years. Of course, President Bush was busy reading to children when planes were flying into buildings and driving his pick-up around his ranch when people were dying in attics in New Orleans. We’ve seen the results of multi-tasking during a crisis.

Senator McCain needs another energizing boost so we aren’t sentenced to Bush44 in the disguise Senator Obama. Hopefully Senator McCain has found his boost that isn’t as shaky as a popular running mate and his return to DC will have a positive impact on Congress this week while Senator Obama is approving campaign ads, flying around to the purple states giving the stump speech we can all recite in our sleep and practicing for the debate.

As Senator Graham said, right now my priority isn’t a debate. It’s knowing when I pay my electric bill online next week – my bank can fulfill my directive and transfer the funds. When I use my credit card on Friday for dinner, the credit card industry hasn’t failed half way through my salad. My priorities are knowing the funds in my banking accounts are safe, my credit is safe, my investment portfolio isn’t going to become useless and my mortgage isn’t at risk. I want a leader who not only is going to assure me I’m not going to be devastated financially, he’s going to work to create a plan that will resolve this crisis, correct the problems for the future, protect people who are in danger of going into foreclosure and limit costs to me, the tax payer.

If Senator Obama thinks my top priority is listening to his pithy comments on Friday evening, watching his campaign ads and hearing sound bites from his daily stump stops this week, he’s more out of touch with middle American than he claims Senator McCain is.

Senator McCain is gaining more respect from me today. Even if he has no idea how much middle America is hurting, at least he’s willing to risk his campaign and career aspirations to return to Washington and jump into the mess. Senator Obama, well he knows he has no influence in Congress without Speaker Pelosi’s arm twisting, has no idea how to vote and it’s useless for him to show up. So he’ll just keep campaigning, he’s good at that.

  • hadenough

obama press conference yesterday on what obama calls the “crisis on Wall Street” where obama layout his four principles on what the deal should. This is the third time a reporter is trying to get obama to say if he will vote against the bill if it does not meet his four principles:

Q Senator, just to be very clear on these four principles that you outlined that deal specifically with this bill, if the legislation does not address all four of those principles in a way that you deem adequate, will you vote against the legislation?

SEN. OBAMA: If the plan that emerges does not address the principles that I’ve discussed, then I will strongly recommend to Secretary Paulson that we go back to the drawing board and find an approach that does address them. And — and the — and — and again, this goes back to my earlier point, Sheila (sp), which is, this is not one of those circumstances where the president can come out and simply say, “You do it my way, or nothing’s going to happen.”

We should be working in a bipartisan fashion to figure out how to get us out of this mess, but what the American people and taxpayers rightly expect is that there is going to be accountability…
    http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/09/barack_obama_sept_23_press_con.html

And for the third time the obama fog machine gives no answer. obama refuses to stand by his own four principles. Words mean something? Not so much to obama.

He does say “We should be working in a bipartisan fashion.” At least now we know what he means by bipartisan: Call me if you need me.

  • Sassy

Senator McCain will return to D.C. and confere with the Republican leadership, especially Senator Shelby, co-chair of the banking committee.
We have no way, at this point, to know how the vote is swinging. The whole thing is in disarray! The vote will not be strickly along party lines!
Another day will suffice for a debate…first things first!
The best solution will probably need to evolve over time, but there needs to be some restoration of confidence and sanity!
McCain can deliver…I have seen him in action on the Senate floor!

    • Peggy Sue

Maybe they’ll just bring an Obama cardboard cut out into the Oval Office [with a voice chip, of course].

Then he can say, “Present,” over and over again.

Obama doesn’t want to go to Washington , there may be decisions to make and now the people are on to him he can’t vote PRESENT anymore so what is he to do?

While sewing up a cut on the hand of a 75 year old west Texas rancher, the doctor struck up a conversation. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be the next President.

The old rancher said, “Well ya know somethin’ son, Obama is what we used to call… a ‘post turtle’.” Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was. The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s called a ‘post turtle’.”

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. “You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there in the first place !!”‘

Did you guys see the joint statement by Obama and McCain over at Greta Wire…..Tell me Im not the only one that is wondering why a Joint Statement ends with comments only from Obama.

    http://gretawire.foxnews.com/2008/09/24/the-joint-statement/#comments
“Joint Statement of Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain

The American people are facing a moment of economic crisis. No matter how this began, we all have a responsibility to work through it and restore confidence in our economy. The jobs, savings, and prosperity of the American people are at stake.

Now is a time to come together – Democrats and Republicans – in a spirit of cooperation for the sake of the American people. The plan that has been submitted to Congress by the Bush Administration is flawed, but the effort to protect the American economy must not fail.

This is a time to rise above politics for the good of the country. We cannot risk an economic catastrophe. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

Speaking for himself, Senator Obama outlined the following principles that he calls on Senator McCain to support:

I believe that several core principles should guide this legislation.

First, there must be oversight. We should not hand over a blank check to the discretion of one man. We support an independent, bipartisan board to ensure accountability and complete transparency.

Second, we need to protect taxpayers. There should be a path for taxpayers to recover their money, and to turn a profit if Wall Street prospers.

Third, no Wall Street executive should profit from taxpayer”

    • 30yrdem-not any more

McCain had already said this yesterday about oversight, taxpayers and about the executives not getting big money….I heard him say it…

      • katmandu

You’re right — there was this blowback from the right and the left about McCain’s $400,000 a year limit plan on exec salaries being unrealistic. And then Obama basically repeated it, saying the bad CEO boys shouldn’t get a penny from the taxpayers (whatever that means — but then fine points are not Bozoama’s strength).

Hey — Biden’s handlers are restricting press access to him, too. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/23/bidens-team-restricting-p_n_128747.html Great. The country in crisis and we have people who can’t be trusted to talk to the press.

      • kinthenorthwest

So this is a Very Very Strange Joint Statement.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Johnson_to_lead_Obama_briefing.html

    Johnson to lead Obama briefing

Former Fannie Mae chairman Jim Johnson was dumped from Obama’s vice presidential search team, but he’s still playing a behind-the-scenes role on the campaign.

Former Senator Tom Daschle, a top Obama backer, emailed a select list this afternoon that he and Johnson would be leading a briefing intended largely for Clinton’s campaign brain trust next month.

Johnson’s involvement comes at a moment when political association with the failed mortgage giants is particularly toxic. He was already the subject of a McCain ad attacking Obama.

I don’t think I need to comment on this one.

How in god’s name could Obama be ahead by 9 points in the polls? He is helpless without his enterage of Harvardites. McCain is the true leader- country first. Obama is ME first. When will America wake up in realizing that the president is the Commander and Chief of the military. Obama and the military? Please. He is a joke. MCain is a war hero. There is some question about the polls–overpolling groups, looking at registered vs. likely voters, and so forth. I sure wouldn’t give them more than a glancing look.

      • SJ

Some of these polls are not to be taken seriously when CBS, ABC, FOX or even the media have these online polls if you are on the chat sites the link goes up telling people there is a poll about Obama go vote for him, or there is one for Palin go vote against her.

This goes on all the time, some come back to the site and say how they voted making fun of it, encouraging all their buddies to go vote also, to which side they want to push the percentages up.

Also person from all over the world can vote on these online polls so am surprised that the media should take them as solid proof as to how one candidate is doing or not.

McCain, Palin win at Wal-Mart, Obama takes StarbucksPhoenix Business Journal – by Mike Sunnucks

John McCain holds a 46 percent to 44 percent lead over presidential rival Barack Obama in a new poll of voters in 14 battleground states.

That reverses a 3-point lead for Obama in the same poll in August and comes despite national surveys showing Obama with a slight lead.

McCain and running mate Sarah Palin fare better with Wal-Mart shoppers and older voters — women in particular — in the poll, while Obama enjoys support from Starbucks customers, younger voters and women with college degrees.

The National Public Radio/Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research poll surveyed 800 voters on Sept. 18 and 20 in Minnesota, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Missouri.

      The poll also found:

      • McCain with a 53 percent to 41 percent lead over Obama among swing state voters 55 and older and Obama with 59 percent to 28 percent advantage with women ages 18 to 34.

      • McCain with a 56 percent to 35 percent edge among independents 50 and older and Obama with 40 percent to 33 percent lead among independents 18 to 49.

      • Starbucks customers favor Obama 52 percent to 39 percent, while Wal-Mart shoppers go with McCain 58 percent versus 33 percent for Obama.

The NPR poll also showed Palin more popular with older women — including Wal-Mart consumers — than with younger woman.

Independent Ralph Nader got 3 percent in the September poll.

A compilation of several national polls by Real Clear Politics gives Obama a 48 percent to 44 percent lead over McCain.

Somebody else would know more about this than me, but I’ve read that the ABC poll was skewed on purpose – waaaaay overpolling democrats and adding almost 200 more AAs than the sample warranted.

Basically, it’s propaganda on the part of the media polling firms to try to produce a self-fulfilling prophecy that says “0bama’s winning.”

Answer: Some pollsters sample more heavily for registered Democrats that actual registration numbers would warrant.

Colmes just said on Fox that 90% of the American public wants to see this debate…HUH?? What poll is this? The economy is on the brink of death and we’re supposed to believe that Americans want to sit in front of their tv watching these two talk about foreign policy? Bullshit!

OMG I did not realize this. Talk about playing politics.

“Lawmakers, who were scheduled to recess for the year on Sept. 26, did not welcome the pressure to hurry and make a decision within a week of when the bailout proposal was first presented to them. Given that the negotiations are still going on, it’s very possible both the House and Senate will meet next week to vote on the bill.”

They had no intention of passing something. The Democrats wanted the CRASH hoping it would help them politically. No wonder Reid is so pissy about McCain coming to Washingotn to fix this. They didn’t want to fix it. If they intended on fixing it before Friday’s break FOR THE YEAR, THEY WOULDN”T BE COMPLAINING ABOUT McCAIN COMING TO HELP FIND SOLUTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES.

    DEMOCRATS SUCK.

Crisis: Russia/Georgia – Obama was body surfing in Hawaii – never came home – made 3 statements before he got it right.

Crisis: Total economic collapse – they can call me if they need me while he is in a hotel in Florida.

God help us if Obama is elected – this guy is one lazy SOB – nothing interrupts his leisure time in sunny places.

I am not sure if he understands what the Presidency is all about.

He will be on vacation more than in the White House – call me if you need me.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/McCains_proposal.html?showall

Good Politico summary of the fallout from today, with some news:

CNN reports that McCain’s campaign is proposing swapping the planned Friday debate for next Thursday’s vice presidential debate if, and only if, there isn’t a bailout deal reached by Friday.

There was already a reasonable chance that a deal would be reached by Friday; now, if it is, McCain can declare victory and head to Mississippi, having retaken some of the initiative.

    • incredulous

      Uh, what did McCain do?

You do understand that McCain hasn’t done a d-mn thing, right? Other than canceling a debate? He hasn’t had any input. The particulars were ironed out over the last couple of days in John’s absence.

You do understand that the “Paulson Plan” is actually the Bush Plan?

  • jbjd

This afternoon, Senator McCain announced he was suspending his political campaign due to the financial situation, and asking President Bush to convene a leadership meeting with the candidates and Congressional leaders. He also asked Senator Obama to postpone the Friday night foreign policy debate.

Afterward, Senator Obama announced he disagreed the debate should be postponed – remember, he’d been practicing for this for the past 2 days, and would continue his preparation tomorrow – and admonished his opponent, Presidents need to be able to do two things at once. He also proposed anyone who needed him to work out this mess could call.

Tonight, President Bush announced he had convened a meeting tomorrow with both Senator McCain and Senator Obama; and members of the Congressional leadership, to work out a deal to shore up the financial sector.

CLINTON: I WON’T ‘DUMP’ ON MCCAIN TICKET

    http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/24/clinton-i-wont-dump-on-mccain-ticket/

Former President Bill Clinton says if Democrats want someone to dump on John McCain, he’s not the guy.

Some members of his party have been complaining that Clinton has not been enthusiastic enough in his support for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, who defeated Clinton’s wife in the primary campaign, and heaping too much praise on McCain.

But Clinton told CNN’s “Larry King Live” on Wednesday that he doesn’t thinking “dumping” on McCain or his running mate, Sarah Palin, is a winning strategy. He said undecided voters aren’t interested in attacks but solutions for the problems they face.

“I just don’t believe that getting up here and hyperventilating about Gov. Palin, or Sen. McCain for that matter, is a productive use of a former president’s time and is not a vote-getter,” he said, adding that he admires McCain even though he disagrees with several of his positions.

Clinton said he and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, gave vigorous endorsements to Obama at the national convention last month and that Hillary Clinton has traveled extensively on Obama’s behalf. That includes a tour of Michigan on Saturday.

“I think you can argue that she has done more than all other runner-ups have in the Democratic Party in 40 years,” the former president said. “We have been quite clear on this. We’re not party-wreckers, and we believe that the country needs to take a different course.”

There’s enough blame in this to go around. Bill Clinton’s administration did push for loans to low income and minorities by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Bill had good intentions and wanted those people to be able to have houses without down payments and low rates. The Republicans pushed for deregulation for businesses because the red tape in those businesses were causing long delays and all kinds of extra costs and cutting into profits. John McCain saw the problem in 2005 and tried to get a bill passed to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but no one in Congress did a thing! Why? Because they are all in bed with corporate America standing there with their hands out getting paid off – yes, Republicans and Democrats. They don’t want to get off the money (gravy) train!

I think John McCain will put a stop to that or at least will try – Barack is right in the middle of it. All you Obamabots – take a look at where he stands on getting money from these organizations – number 2 in all of Congress after only 145 days.

    • Zelda Crunch

Bill Clinton’s administration did push for loans to low income and minorities by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

But the people he put in charge double-crossed him. They pocketed perhaps a hundred million together. And one of them is a top dog with the Obama campaign today. How cute.

    • Perry Logan

No way. It’s the Republicans fault. It’s time the Republicans learned to take responsibility for their failures, which go on forever.

When the Democrats screw up, everyone says “the Democrats screwed up.”

When the Republicans screw up, everyone says “both parties screwed up.”

This is because Democrats have very little spine in defending their own. On the contrary, they more often attack their own people when they are attacked by Republicans. As I say, no spine.

Let’s just admit the Republicans had control over all three branches of government from 2000-2006. They shut the Democrats out and did it their way, and that’s why the nation is on its knees in every respect. They therefore have no one else to blame.

I’m sure that if things had somehow gone well under George W. Bush, the Republicans would be hogging all the credit. ;)

I’m sick of the Republicans spreading the manure of their failures onto the Democrats. They’ve been getting away with this scam for decades.

IF Congress doesn’t pull their heads out and figure out what to do with this mess that started from the bad mortgage assets………then our economy is going to spin out of control.

It’s interesting how Obama would RATHER debate political rhetoric instead of putting out fires. This is where experience comes into play. McCain knows damn well that if something is not done right away……several will suffer. But nooooooooooo….Obama doesn’t know the difference between a crisis situation and a political “debate” than can start again after the crisis is being dealt with.

Obama is a complete [DELETED]. Part of this mess comes from the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae debacle……say….isn’t Raine’s the Obama economic advisor? Didn’t that Raines guy take 25 million from the hybrid gov’t entity?

[ADMINISTRATOR: Comment removed for inappropriate comment.]

    • SJ

Obama’s main focus is winning the election he does not give a shit if the entire financial sector tanks in the morning, he just wants to be President.

Mc Cain on the other hand is more in tune with fixing this mess because it is a serious problem that will have far reaching complications not only for the USA but for the entire world markets.

Anyone sensible person would think this would take precedence over an election race what good would it be for anyone to become President and the country is facing financial ruin with thousands on the bread line?

I am amazed at some that just don’t seem to get what we are facing and prefer to score points on what Obama is doing or saying Mc Cain in running.

Maybe Americans really need to face massive unemployment where you have to line up for a daily ration to know how important this issue is and to hell with a debate which am sure is going to bore anyone to death .

  • suz

I am glad one of the senators had the leadership to be where he should be. Of course I can’t blame nobama for not wanting to go at first. After all he did receive $525,000 from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Also, one of his top advisior Jim Johnson was the CEO at Fannie, Freddie, and Lehmans Bros. Another top advisior Franklin Raines was fired for accounting irregularities and recieved the golden parachute deal–$90 million when he left. Then we have his National Finance Chair Penny Pritzker, she was the Chair of the bankrupt subprime lender Superior Bank of Chicago paying $450 million in fines to avoid criminal prosecution. These are more of his fine friends.

Obama has NOTHING to add to the discussion. No expertise at all. Plus he doesn’t want to have a hand in anything that can come back to bite him in the ass later. This is not what a leader does. A leader doesn’t just vote “Present”…or in this case “NOT EVEN PRESENT”

  • LisaB

The Senate is supposed to be a deliberative body. THey are supposed to talk, debate and hash things out. The work of the Senate is not merely to cast a vote but to engage in the discussion and represent your constituents in that discussion.

The discussion is the point and the vote can be done by a free pair of hands. Well, that is, if they know which button to push. Obama has said in the past he used the wrong button on votes in IL.

Obama should BE there to participate in the debate, not just wait by the phone – unless he intends to vote “not present.”

  • cynic
