Bush Invites Obama Back to Washington

Obama was left standing alone today, like a petulant kid, refusing to return to DC, ignoring the financial crisis, and insisting on McCain debating him Friday. Now, after a call from President Bush, he’s agreed to drag himself to Washington tomorrow to attend a meeting at the White House with McCain and Congressional leaders.

“A few moments ago, President Bush called Senator Obama and asked him to attend a meeting in Washington tomorrow, which he agreed to do. Senator Obama has been working all week with leaders in Congress, Secretary Paulsen, and Chairman Bernanke to improve this proposal, and he has said that he will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution. He strongly believes the debate should go forward on Friday so that the American people can hear from their next President about how he will lead America forward at this defining moment for our country,” said Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton. [emphasis added]

Senator Obama, what exactly have you done this week to qualify your campaign to say:

Senator Obama has been working all week with leaders in Congress, Secretary Paulsen, and Chairman Bernanke to improve this proposal, and he has said that he will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution.

My guess: Nothing.

    • Anne

So is that how he would handle a 3:00 AM call?

      • Elle

Obama didn’t answer the call because he didn’t know it was 3am. :-)

    • Monet

I figured if they called, Senator Obama would answer with a text message at 3 am. But the poor guy has now been summoned to DC by the Oval Office, a request he can’t turn down.

Congress has been in a stand off for a week. The Democrats holding firm, the Republicans and White House holding firm. Nothing can be passed without the Republicans voting with the Democrats.

From Senator Obama’s point of view, showing up in DC isn’t going to help him. He’s better to stay away from that fray. Which he is good at doing, he does his very best to never vote on anything controversial. Speaker Pelosi doesn’t appear willing to go with President Bush’s plan and if she isn’t willing to twist the Democratic arms in Congress to get them to vote with the Republicans, Senator Obama isn’t going to have much impact at arm twisting. There aren’t too many Democrats running for office in this country at the moment who would be willing to help Senator Obama cross the street. He’s done nothing to help the candidates down ticket.

If Senator McCain rides into DC on his white horse, knocks some sense into the Republicans, gets them to vote for a bill that has more of what the Democrats want and it makes sense to the American public, he comes out a victor. That is if the economy waits until November 5th to finally crash.

I can see why Senator Obama wants to remain in Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, etc. Anything he attempts on his own to get a bill passed will be ineffectual and he’ll have to rely on Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid to make it happen.

Senator McCain has had some lucky breaks this campaign. He managed to turn Hurricane Gustav into a positive for the Republican convention and he might be able to do it again with the Wall Street mess. Every crisis has given him an opportunity to show his leadership abilities and his country first mantra, while Senator Obama has had to sit aside and wait to see how the wind is blowing. Senator McCain has been dealt some good hands in the card game, hopefully he doesn’t blow it.

      • just me

Not to worry, though. If the primaries are any indicator, McCain will get the First question on every issue so Barky can do his Sponge Act.

      • mcpalin hill

Uppity Obama is not a multi tasker. He spent 3 days cramming for the Foreign Policy debate and this financial crisis which could lead to a Depression should not stop him from Debating. After all he might just forget what he learned if they wait until next week.

This new FoxNews poll shows Johnny Mac with a Goldwaterian 39%. The map in November is going to be as blue in ’64. Virtually no one other than the people on this board think the debate should be cancelled. Even George Will says that John McCain lacks the temperament to be President.

This place reminds me of when someone posted a NAMBLA board on a forum I frequent. These people were so out of the mainstream, and only talked to people that thought the way they thought, that they began to think that it was normal, and not, you know, completely sick.

For me, it’s a protest vote to keep a crooked Democrat out of the White House.

Like most Americans, I have a low opinion of Republicans and expect very little from John and Sarah. But this is a case of country over party.

    • Ferd McBerfle

      Shut up, Stuttering Alphabet Troll.

    • TeakwoodKite

“intelligentsia” ? There is a word right out of the socialist lexicon.

      OT last thread to Mr. Murder;

It is a crime for sure.

What is amusing is that the Republican leadership on the Hill were not given a heads up.

What is an MO worthy of some consideration is that BOTH party’s knew this was coming months ago.

NQ discussed it 14 months ago. And now they are all in a dither and digging their Prada’s into the carpet of the senate and house floor.

  • Mr. Natural

Obama has a long history of placing his personal ambition ahead of anything else. He as much as admitted that during his February 26 Cleveland debate with Senator Clinton.

  • lark

If you listen closely to the McCain’s statement then you will see that everything, every single word McCain said, came to be and happened. The statement is a fulfilled prophesy. And to me that’s really very impressive.

    • Monet

It’s not all that impressive when you’re holding four aces in your hand. McCain has the aces.

Bush has a bail out plan, as most of his plans it’s ill thought out and doesn’t have a snow ball’s chance in hell of actually working. Republicans in Congress don’t like to bail out companies and really don’t want to be blamed for spending $700 billion of money we don’t have.

The Democrats want some oversight, bye bye to golden parachutes, etc.

For a week, nothing has happened. The markets all over the world have flipped flopped. Financially everything is grinding to a stop. Something must be done.

Who can persuade the Republicans to relent on a few points? The guy at the top of the ticket who strong arms them, insisting unless they give into the Democrats on at least part of what they want, none of them are going to be working in DC in January, unless they become lobbyists.

McCain is in the driver’s seat right now, even President Bush is giving into him. McCain should have a bill signed and delivered before the weekend is over. If his luck holds out until November 5th, the economy won’t crash before then and he’ll get the million or so swing votes that put him into the White House.

      • athy

        Monet,
No matter who you choose to support for President during this election, take a look at Ralph Nader bailout proposed plan.

Whether or not you agree with it, his plan is excellent as a point of reference for comparison.

Ralph Nader to Congress: Put the Brakes on “Carte Blanche” Bailout:
“Haste Makes Waste” with Goliath of Panic Legislation.”
“Taxpayers are being asked to foot the bill for corporate malfeasance.”

An excerpt from his press release today:

“Independent presidential candidate and longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader said today that he opposes giving Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson — heralded as King Henry on the cover of Newsweek — what amounts to a blank check for $700 billion with nothing more than a promise to keep the U.S. financial system from imploding. Nader said that any bailout should have strict accountability, conflict-of-interest, regulatory, and oversight rules attached, including a cap on executive compensation and stock warrants for the rescuing taxpayers.

Ralph Nader, whose vigilance for consumers dates back to 1965, issued the following statement this afternoon, urging Congress to slow down, “Haste makes waste.”

“Over the years, every time Congress acted in haste, it was an unsuccessful boondoggle, from the $3 billion synthetic fuels legislation of 1980 to the 2002 Iraq War Resolution.

“The proposed $700 billion blank check is the Goliath of domestic panic legislation.

“It’s a triple whammy on the American people as taxpayers, consumers and workers.

“Without public hearings, without civil justice safeguards, accountability and Congressional oversight, without comprehensive regulation and shareholder governance, this three-page bill could be the mother of terrible unintended consequences. For example, what if it is the wrong kind of bailout?”

“Something has to be done, says Nader, but not in secrecy and not without a Constitutional brace of protections for the American people added to the bill, including appropriate sunset provisions.”

        Read the rest:

        http://www.votenader.org/media/2008/09/24/meltdownbailout/

        • Monet

I think Mr. Nader in on the right track. Unfortunately, I don’t think such a bill would pass, at least not this week. But who knows, two weeks ago I wouldn’t have thought Senator McCain would have suspended his campaign with six weeks to go until the election.

I haven’t had a chance to read Mr. Nader’s plan, but from your outline it sounds similar to Senator Clinton’s.

I’m also wondering if loaning the money would be better than buying the securities. But I don’t think there is one expert who could answer that question.

  • DaddysDarlin

He always has to sing his own praises, even when they are flat out lies. Obama is the consummate liar, unless the American people know otherwise they believe this lie.
Dear God, please make sure there are enough savvy Americans that will get out and vote for McCain to insure this asshole never gets near the presidency.
Why doesnt the MSM do or say anything to refute these bogus claims?

    • lark

Why doesnt the MSM do or say anything to refute these bogus claims?

Because they believe that they will continue to make money or more money when the problems get bigger and bigger and when more people are unemployed they become TV and media consumers.

Because when Oblahblah wins they’ll have fodder to write books and books and make money and money. Like Hillary.

BIDEN DROPPING OUT? RUMOR THRIVES ON INTERNET

    http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/24/biden-dropping-out-rumor-thrives-on-internet/

It’s almost certainly just a case of the telephone game gone high-tech, but there’s an Internet rumor surging through inboxes and discussion boards that Joe Biden will drop out as Barack Obama’s running mate after his Oct. 2 debate with Sarah Palin — and that he’ll be replaced by Hillary Clinton on the Democratic presidential ticket.

The story line goes as follows: John McCain’s selection of Palin has generated so much interest in the Republican ticket that Obama needs to make a radical move to regain momentum. So in the days after the vice presidential candidates debate in Missouri, Biden will bow out, citing “health problems” (Biden underwent surgery in 1988 to repair two brain aneurysms). Enter Clinton.

Furthermore, the story goes, any damage the gaffe-prone Biden does during the debate will be erased by his abrupt exit.

It sounds like a job for Fight the Smears, the Web site the Obama campaign set up to quash damaging Internet rumors. But Fight the Smears hasn’t touched this one, perhaps out of fear that it would only further a wild rumor. The Obama campaign has not commented on it, other than to say that Biden’s medical records will be released soon.

I don’t get why Obama is so eager to debate. He’s not exactly good at it you know. He can’t speak without a teleprompter and he really feared Hillary and canceled I dunno how many debates already. Where does he suddenly get this confidence from? Or is it easy to say ‘I wanna debate’ once he knows there won’t be a debate?

    Something’s up.

Who’s supposed to lead this debate anyway?

    • Ferd McBerfle

Or is it easy to say ‘I wanna debate’ once he knows there won’t be a debate?

That’s it, exactly. Next week, he’ll be back to the “I’m too busy to do it ” mantra.

      • lusitania

I was thinking that the reason Barry is so reluctant to reschedule the debate is because another time might interfere with all the fundraising events he has planned. another example of Barry thinking only of himself. He is still a US Senator isn’t he? Dope.

        • teapolo

He was given the questions and has memorized the answers. Going to Washington interferes with rehearsal time…

    • lark

Why? Because he already trial ballooned every McCain position as his own and Biden this morning appropriated the entire McCain’s political career and ascribed to Obama. He is eager to go throw them in McCain’s face and see if he will get red furious in the debate and gets mad. That’s why.

He must have the questions for the debate

  • Seattle Moss

The process of writing this bill is going to take the rest of this week. The Gingrich fiscal republicans are going to hold out until Friday and then make a deal brokered by McCain with Bush and Congress.
This is a major play for McCain as the markets will be up close to 500+ points on Monday.
The rest of the week McCain will claim victory while Obama will always be viewed as missing the mark by being present and playing politics.

  • Liberty Belle not for Obama

FYI – Greta about to discuss “The Hillary Factor” in determining the outcome of the election.

Hillary campaigns for Obama, yet same % of supporters don’t want him as in June.

  • McKatmoon

From the article listed above Now that’s a whole new look on getting votes, I have never seen before.

Last week, Senator Barack Obama’s campaign filed a lawsuit in federal court, seeking to prohibit the Michigan Republican Party from using foreclosure lists to single out and challenge voters. The state Republican Party has denied having any such plans.

Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, sent a letter last week along with a dozen other Democratic senators to Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey asking him to ensure that voters facing foreclosure are not harassed or intimidated at polling places.

In Ohio, liberal-leaning groups are planning to help people in foreclosure and families who are homeless to vote by using a five- to seven-day window starting Sept. 30 when state residents are permitted to register and cast an early ballot simultaneously. The Republican Party has filed a lawsuit in state court to block registering and voting on the same day, arguing that state law forbids it.

    • candymarl

Now they’re worried about counting votes in Michigan?

Are the Dems sure they don’t want these people to vote just so they can give the votes to someone not on the ballot?

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

Interesting. I think I read elsewhere this week that there are half a million homes now in foreclosure?

      • lark

Is it that these people can potentially vote twice? Once where they live now and once where they used to live.

      • McKatmoon

Yep, those voter fraud scoundrels are working hard, this is the weekend o camps and acorn buddy system at work.

    • mcpalin hill

McKatmoon Obama is never too busy to cheat. I think people who have become suddenly homeless have more important things to do — than early voting. God Obama is the worst kind of thug.

I hope the Republicans win. I think Oz is missing its Wizard. I wish Obama would run in one of the other countries where he’s a citizen.

      • McKatmoon

I know, look at this mess, and that sob knew, knew knew, and all he gave a rats a$$ about was votes; not much different than trying to delay the troops draw down, until after the election, not too hard to see the connection is it.

He’s eager to debate because he’s been cramming for it like crazy these past two days and if the debate isn’t held on Friday as scheduled, then he’ll forget it all, just like any college student who’s ever crammed for an exam in a course where they’ve missed half the classes during the semester.

John McCain doesn’t need to worry about cramming for a debate on foreign policy. That’s one of the benefits of experience.

    • Firefly

I also think barky said he wanted the debate to go on Friday so he could wag his pointy finger at McCain and say, “You bwoke your pwomise – you bwoke the woolz – so I win!”

Man I feel so sorry for this country and the direction I see in heading in just because Obama and his associates need to win at any cost, so they will mortgage our children s future on their political ambitions.

ANd really, what are they going to tell the rest of us who were responsible, when they bail out those who damn well knew they shouldn’t get a house beyond their means, or get a 2nd mortgage, because they just had to go to Europe. They will get a bail out at a lower interest rate, than those who qualified for fixed loans because they worked hard and saved and paid their bills. Socialism, facism.

This is Obama statement back in July 23 2008, Obama is part of this problem people!!

I’m heartened that the President has decided to support this bipartisan bill that will help ensure that mortgages remain affordable for American families and to prevent hundreds of thousands home foreclosures.

In the months since this housing package was announced, nearly a million additional families have faced foreclosure, and our economy has continued to deteriorate. We cannot wait for a million more foreclosures before taking additional action to help struggling families and strengthen our economy.

That’s why I’ve also proposed a second stimulus of at least $50 billion with energy rebates for families struggling with high gas prices, relief for states facing budget cuts, and additional measures to protect homeowners from foreclosure.

    MACAIN VIEW

Of major political figures, only Senator McCain stood alone, not only saying that “Americans should be outraged at the latest sweetheart deal in Washington,” but calling to eliminate these companies’ special status. We now have two clear snapshots of these men as the leaders they would be. Or not.

Russia invades Georgia. McCain comes out immediately with a strong response. Obama mumbles and fumbles, takes three swipes before he mimics McCain’s response. He was on vacation.

The country is in a financial meltdown. McCain suspends his campaign to go to Washington and do the job he was elected to do. Obama talks about multi-tasking and wants to continue with the political campaign. “Call me when you need me.”

The comparison is stark, even shocking. Only the blind or braindead could refuse to admit the difference.

We need a leader, not a poseur.

    McCain/Palin ’08

    • incredulous

Russia moved into Georgia after Georgia invaded South Ossetia and killed a few thousand people–including UN authorized Russian peacekeepers. The Republic of Georgia got their butts kicked. They asked for it. McCain flat-out lied about unfolding events to the American people. That’s not my kind of leader.

Legislation McCain himself supported and voted in favor of led to the financial mess he’s now hoping to take some credit for fixing. He did nothing to fix it. For that matter, it probably isn’t fixed. What we’ve got is a parting shot from Bush–a scheme to buy bad private paper with public money, that will add up to $700 billion more to his other accumulated fiscal damages.

I doubt if that’s something Obama would be eager to take credit for. McCain is desperate to take credit for something. We’ll probably be hearing how McCain “saved the economy” for a while.

      • McHope

Really? Because Obama and Biden both called the President of Georgia in support- after Obama’s taking a stance on the stance he took before he was perfectly clear he would take a stance.

The financial crisis? McCain acted, Obama froze. He released multiple statements on why he had no plan at all. The confidence he inspires is unbelievable, if you are a moron.

          The scene:

And I’m suppose to think about this when I pull that lever in November?

        Don’t think so!

        McCain/Palin ’08

        • PJ

I think a president SHOULD be able to multi-task even in the middle of a major crisis.

Like George Bush was able to read “My Pet Goat” AND deal with the 9/11 crisis!

          Oh wait…

      • Dan

        This is TOTAL bullshit!

Georgia moved it’s troops into South Ossetia to reestablish its authority after months of trouble-making there by Russian-sponsored provocateurs. It was precisely what Russia hoped they would do because it gave them the justification they needed to invade and annex South Ossetia and Abkhazia for themselves, knowing full well that fools like you would buy their BS story. Russia provoked this confrontation from the very beginning. Anyone who seriously believes otherwise is a blithering idiot.

As for the mortgage mess, McCain was one of only a handful of sentors who tried to introduce legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The leigslation was blocked by Democrats. Meanwhile, Barack Obama was raking in over $1 million in campaign cash from the likes of Fannie Mae, Lehman, Goldman Sachs, and Bear Stearns, more than content to look the other way while disaster loomed.

Try getting your facts straight next time, dickhead.

      • Carol

Incredulous send us your facts regarding the legislation McCain supported and voted for that got us into this mess.

I think the reason Obama does not want the debate to be postponed is because he has memorized the questions and practiced his answers. Now if the debate is delayed, newer more up to date questions may be asked and Obama may not have the time to make a more polished answer if he only has a VERY short time to practice his answer. Yeah, I’m accusing the MSM of giving Obama the answers ahead of time.

    • http://JohnMcCain.com Chockablock “Hillawee can you change my diapy pwease?” Opampers

Well, you know, Oblahblah dwells in a cone of invincible ignorance. He needs a leg up on the competition.

  • VRWC – Emergency Dept.

I’m so effin’ sorry that Bush once sat for seven minutes to keep from alarming children and to let the Secret Service make sure that exit routes were secure, or whatever. Sorry? Effin’ not.

Obama seems to have been willing to let a lot more than seven minutes pass before he stands up and moves, as a U.S. Senator, to deal with a national crisis.

If Obama insists on going ahead with the debate anyway and turning it into a one-man townhall, then the McCain campaign should announce that it is sending Palin – not asking Obama whether it’s okay, but just sending her. If Obama doesn’t like that, then let Obama flee the podium, let said poodle pant all the way back home to Mayor Daley and stink up that corruption king’s already stinking rugs. I’m in a foul mood, worried about the economy and all, so I’ll add that somebody should tell Obama that Daley has a certain relative shaped just like a fire hydrant.

Or Obama can announce that Joe Biden will debate in his stead or, if Biden is busy working on the financial crisis, if not on whatever beverage it is that’s making Biden so daffy these days, then have someone else do it – like Mayor Daley! Or who else?

    You know who.

Imagine the Clintons laughing their heads off if Obama asks HRC to do it. Sorry, Hillary’s busy in the Senate with the financial crisis – and do you really want Bill to step in for you, Obama? There’s priceless, and then there’s effin’ priceless.

    • http://JohnMcCain.com Chockablock “Hillawee can you change my diapy pwease?” Opampers

Mac should send Larry Sinclair in his stead to the debate. That will make poodle butt Opampers flee the podium for sure!

  • SJ

Well I hope people wake up and see it really as putting country first, because lets be honest here the giving home mortgages to minorities with risky lending practices, in an effort to increase home ownership among minority borrowers has contributed to some of these financial problems.

Lets not forget this is Obama’s main base so if he can get a bail out for them, this will mean votes for him then he can play their savior all the way to the WH, Obama is lukewarm on this because he wants the bail out it works in his favor for the win, he is not interested in country that will see about itself after the election.

    • McKatmoon

That is what I am saying, his base, is being insured their home by means of making special compensations for voting, whether they have a current address or not. His campaign already sent lawyers to work on this is Michigan next week. Giving how he is acting on really repairing the problem, it shows, he only cares about the votes, nothing more.

    • Anne

He already has these votes. Nothing will change here.

    • Brendy

OT – but I can hardly believe my eyes.

CNN actually reported that Biden and Obama helped keep the Bridge to Nowhere.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/23/biden.earmarks/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

    They actually say:

DEWEY BEACH, Delaware (CNN) — Although Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden routinely mocks his Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for her onetime support of the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere,” Biden and his running mate voted to keep the project alive twice.

Both Biden and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama voted to kill a Senate amendment that would have diverted federal funding for the bridge to repair a Louisiana span badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Senate records show.

And both voted for the final transportation bill that included the $223 million earmark for the Alaska project.

An amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, would have stripped the money appropriated to connect the Alaskan coastal city of Ketchikan to its airport on sparsely populated Gravina Island and diverted the money to Louisiana.

But Biden andObama and 80 of their colleagues rejected the measure, an amendment to a massive 2005 transportation bill that funded thousands of projects across the country.

“That is probably the most disturbing element of this and the campaigning on the Bridge to Nowhere,” said Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation, a taxpayer watchdog group. “Because, yes, they had a chance to vote specifically against the Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska to redirect the money to people, to bridges and infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Katrina going in to New Orleans, and they chose not to.”

I can’t remember the last time CNN reported something unfavorable about Obama.

CNN asked Biden’s campaign whether it could ask the senator about his earmark requests and his votes on the Bridge to Nowhere.

In response, a staffer e-mailed, “You’ve interviewed Gov. Palin re: her completely made up position on the Bridge to Nowhere right?”

Can you believe the arrogance of these jerks?

    • McHope

If they had any sense at all, they’d realize that if they scrutinized Obama as they have Palin or McCain their ratings would go through the roof and would go a long way to repair some of the media’s credibility.

“Maneuver”. Good choice of words. Although I prefer “ploy” myself.

Exactly as he did with his selection of the woefully unqualified Ms. Sarah Palin. If you’re thinking “country first”, you don’t select a hockey mom to stand in for you if you keel over in the middle of an international crisis.

Let’s have a MSM day….I say…tomorrow…we blog on ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS…pay back from all the trolls visiting th NQ site……

  • incredulous

You’ve got your history of the 2008 Georgian conflict turned around backwards. Georgia invaded South Ossetia and killed several thousand people, including UN-authorized Russian peacekeepers, remember? A day later Russian troops pushed them back out, and then crossed into Georgia and kicked their butts.

No doubt you got the republican version of events from a McCain speech.

    • WMCB

South Ossetia is part of Georgia, idiot. Georgia no more “invaded” south ossetia than the United States “invaded” the south during the US civil war.

Russia had absolutely no right to interfere in that, and cross the border into south ossetia. None.

      • incredulous

You obviously don’t know squat about the history of South Ossetia, the ethnicity of the people, what country they prefer to be associated with, or the history of Georgian aggression that led the UN to station Russian peacekeepers there.

Much, I assume, like Sarah Palin.

        • McHope

Don’t forget Barack Hussein Obama. ;)

        • WMCB

Actually, I know quite a bit. And there are serious problems inside Georgia with South Ossetia, and Georgia has not handled them well. The UN was right to try to help.

It doesn’t however, give another country the right to militarily invade and insert themselves into that.

        • WMCB

Oh, and you obviously enjoy taking a superior attitude and assuming that everyone who simply disagrees with you must be an ill-informed yokel, as you sneer from your ivory tower.

Much, I assume, like Barack Obama.

It is what will lose him this election.

          • tampagurl

Is there any surprise here that”incredulous” would side with the Russians.

I’m sure Herr Obama secretly does too.

        • Jillie

so, if mexico decides to send troops into texas because it doesn’t like the way the united states treats hispanics, that would be fine with you.

          sounds reasonable.

    • Ms. Misdemeanor

Well the Russians have had shit for logistics and signals since the 70s.

With observers and intelligence, the Georgians probably knew where the Russians were going, 3 weeks before the fact.

Alas the Georgians were overly exuberant.

I imagine they’ll play the game much more professionally next time around.

      • tampagurl

Georgia should have gotten the clue when Russia started to hand out Russian passports to the people of South Ossetia.

  • nicole

Obama looks like a complete loser. Does he actually think that with all of this mess happening with the economy that we care more to look at him recite his lines, I mean talk, about foreign policy? I know he’s been studying hard all week long in a resort in Florida. He’s been studying harder for this debate than he did for the Bar.

Obama and the Democrats have some damn nerve to try to turn McCain’s decision to actually do his job and put the American people before his campaign as something negative. Sure, McCain knows that people with a brain will only respect him more for his choice to do so which will hopefully result in positive poll numbers. Obama’s just upset that he didn’t think of the idea first. He didn’t want to look like he was following anybody’s lead on the decision-making. I hope this backfires on his ass.

    • Brendy

nicole – “recite his lines”; I LOVE THAT line and that is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH! LOL! He’s afraid he’s going to have to ‘re-memorize’ his answers to the questions I’m sure he already has access to, if he has to reschedule his ‘recital’ (sp?)!

    Matthew.

You are on FIRE tonight. You are provoking a lot of expansive thought and discussion. I love it.

    May I share something?

It was reported that the Obama campaign sent a bogus “joint statement” that Gretta read on TV tonight.

The statement was more than just bogus. There never was an agreement my McCain to issue one. While we were watching cable news and reading blogs McCain was on network news clearing thing up.

McCain, appearing live on “The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric,” challenged Obama’s claims that he supported a joint statement.

“This is not the time for statements. … I think the American people expect more of us. And I would hope that we would respond that way,” he said.

“We discussed that we do agree, and I’d be glad to — to join in a common press release or statement, but now is not the time for statements. Time is now to act,” he added.

I wonder if Katie had another 1929 TV moments and thought: “Huh!?”

    • Zelda Crunch

The statement was more than just bogus.

      OMG. Oh shit.

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I missed that about Couric. That’s quite a lie on Obama’s part! I’ve seen the ‘joint’ statement listed many places–wonder what will be made of this, especially the signing-statement-like comments added by Obama that I heard in one report.

Do you a link on this?

      And, thanks on the comments!
      Matthew

    • Mr. Natural

but now is not the time for statements. Time is now to act,”

Obama’s reflexive response is never anything but more hot air.

      What a putz.

Someone here said The Economist was a good source of news. I have my doubts now.

    http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2008/09/whos_first.cfm

I THINK my colleague in Washington has it right when he says John McCain is “suspending his campaign in order to help his campaign.”

(No mention of who this colleague is.)

Mr McCain’s response was the campaign suspension gimmick-a pretty obvious attempt at one-upmanship in the game of who can look more presidential. ut suggesting a complete change of course and calling the debate to a halt doesn’t make Mr McCain look like a president; it makes him look like a drama queen. Presidents have to handle multiple crises at once; they do not get to call timeout when it suits them. George Bush cannot ask al-Qaeda to just cool it for a few months until the economy rights itself. Over the past week Mr McCain has veered wildly, from assuring voters our economy remained fundamentally strong to demanding Christopher Cox’s head on a platter. This just seems like one more desperate hurl at the dartboard.

You just don’t hurl shit at McCain IMHO. This whole screed seems poisoned. FWIW the comments to this ‘article’ are a lot better tempered and more temperate.

I think this a good idea that will benefit the electors.

This is a clever gambit by McCain, and in my opinion, an equally clever response by Obama.

Ultimately, these are empty gestures, because neither is on the Senate Banking Committee, which is where this bill is going to be hammered out. But it’s fun to talk about.

At least the commenters are civil. But The Economist as a source of unslanted news? Uh – never.

A little off topic but saw this on another site

A founding member of the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois met in New York City tonight with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jodie Evans, who co-hosted Obama’s first major fundraiser in Hollywood in February 2007 just after Obama announced his candidacy and is a top fundraiser and donor to Obama’s campaign, led a delegation of leftist anti-American groups that held a private meeting near the United Nations. The stated purpose of the meeting was to “serve as an opening for diplomatic resolution” to prevent war between Iran and the United States.

The government of Iran is listed as a state sponsor of terrorism by the State Department and is strongly believed to be developing nuclear weapons.

BO must have the questions for the debate, he is way to eager. He knows he sucks at debates, he doesn’t want to do town hall meetings with McCain. Something is not right. They should change the topic of the debate to economy to throw him off.

    • Zelda Crunch

Exactly my thoughts. A theory is he still fears it but once McCain bowed out he lost nothing by pretending to like it.

      Paragraph 11

    • Docelder

Communist dictators prefer the peasants to be unarmed. The right to keep arms has kept us free this long. When we lose that, we will lose not only that freedom, but more likely freedom itself. Watch the Pelosicrats, watch them closely, their man pulled a “coup” of the democratic party. The republican party currently stands between the Pelosicrat party and the middle class as we know it. If Obama wins this election, it will mark the beginning of the end of the middle class in this country.

      • tampagurl

If Obama wins this election, it will mark the beginning of the end of the middle class in this country.

Sad but true. I don’t own a gun but I will fight to maintain the right for those that do.

    • Zelda Crunch

There are too many gun killings in the US. It’s really atrocious. Take away your right to kill? I give a shit.

      • Docelder

Well, remember when the gun was called the “peacemaker”. It was in a time of lawlessness. So, since we are not there anymore… is it the laws that keep us safe?.. or is it the guns that keep us safe? Ask the police… they have the law on their side… and a gun on the other side.

      • tampagurl

Criminals would find away to get guns even if you made them illegal. Drugs are illegal and it doesn’t seem to stop drug dealers. Guns don’t kill, people kill.

And this little gem from Jim Ryan at Just One Minute.

By withdrawing into inaction, McCain leaves Obama with two intolerable options: follow McCain the leader or be left standing there with his dick in his hand.

    It’s a Zen thing.

    http://powerandcontrol.blogspot.com/2008/09/just-weird.html

    • cynical

The third option is for Obama to show up for the debate as planned. I suppose he could answer all the questions put to him, and then the camera could cut to John’s empty podium…

McCain seems to really want to be associated with the Bush Bail-Out Plan (aka the Paulson Plan). A $700 billion blank check, to buy bad paper from Wall Street on behalf of the hapless taxpayers.

I’m sure that’s going to play well with the voters.

Apparently congressional reps are hearing from their constituents in record numbers today. People are overwhelmingly negative about the bail-out plan.

      • Dan

I really hope that’s precisely what happens. The image of Obama on stage by himself will remind voters that while Obama was more interested in advancing his own political career, John McCain was in Washington doing the job the citizens of Arizona elected him to do.

That will, in fact, play very well with voters.

        • http://powerandcontrol.blogspot.com M. Simon

If the credit markets dry up the whole economy could go belly up.

That is how the Great Depression started. Helped along by higher taxes and trade restrictions.

Higher taxes and trade restrictions: the Obama plan. So think of it this way: Obama has a plan to make a bad situation worse.

          • cynical

We’ve got an 8-year republican administration that’s doubled our debt to $10 trillion. Their 2009 budget already promises a $482 billion deficit. Now they’re looking to beg, borrow or steal another $700 billion, in order free up credit and make more borrowing possible for millions of people who are already carrying historically high personal debt loads.

Add to the mix a republican presidential candidate who plans enormous additional tax cuts for the wealthy, further reducing revenues, while continuing a $12 billion a month occupation of Iraq and simultaneously increasing military spending.

Welcome to the terminal phase of Reaganomics.

        • Seattle Moss

I doubt that will happen Dan
You never give an opponent a platform. Carter learned that in 1980 when he refused to debate Anderson and Reagan.
The next two days will be about saving the country. Obama will try to get in some points but McCain has the upper hand. They will either have it completed together by Friday and have the debate or postpone it till next Thursday.
You know Obama is good at changing his mind.

        • IndianaDem

It’s about advancing the alternative policies of the democratic party all the way to the White House. Democrats consider that to be of great importance. The current financial crisis demonstrates exactly how important and urgent change is. Give republican policies another 4 years and the economy will be in ruins.

      • Zelda Crunch

A $700 billion blank check, to buy bad paper from Wall Street on behalf of the hapless taxpayers.

      • andySF

What part of this problem do you not understand?

People don’t want any bailout or just as it is?

Here is my reply to your previous post ion the questioning the necessity of the bailout,

What’s wrong with the so call high information Obot?

The tanking of AIG send a shock wave to the world’s financial market that’s make investor panic and gave green light to speculators. The govt was going to let small firms fold without lifting a finger, but this is too much a risk to ignore.

Short sell and sell off is running other financial company that’s in good shape to the ground, risk a lot of them going belly up. It’s never the rich who will suffer in a bad market because they generally only invest no more than 50% of their asset in the market. It’s the average American’s retirement fund and 401K that will take the biggest hit, since they don’t generally have other savings.

What’s worst is the fact that those money leaving the market will go to oil, gold and other commodity speculation(people have to invest it somewhere). Didn’t you see the oil price up 16% in just one day? That’s inflation for you.

The tanking of financial company around the globe will dry up credit for companies big and small(as most corporation need credit for their operation) when the number of banks drop. There you will see record number of company out of business. And those able to get credit will be paying high interest. That translate to Huge job lost. It’s also worst for the housing market and more foreclosure as a result. The govt will also pay more interest on it’s debt and that means high debt.

High inflation, high interest, high unemployment and govt in default is very likely if the world financial market don’t regain it’s confidence. It’s those who live pay check to pay check that will hurt the most. Great depression is possible.

The reason this is needed to be done soon is the fact that the short selling of stock will resume soon and the investor are losing confident. If this last a couple weeks longer, you can relive the great depression again(unemployment, interest and inflation all in the high teens).

Now, does it make sense for everyone in the congress to haul ass back to DC to make it happen?

BTW, don’t bring up the part of not going back a week ago, because it was possible that a [plan was going to work out. The congress now is stalling, and the standard barer in both party should get their butt there to make a deal work, period.

I am sure people are very interested in 0bama to talk to himself(all those who drunk the koll-aid).

  • mackeral

I think John McCain has seriously miscalculated here. His responses to questions about this crisis over the last couple of weeks have been incoherent and inconsistent, and his poll numbers have been dropping like a rock as a result. Just yesterday he admitted that he hadn’t even read the Administration’s proposal — the three and a half page proposal. He hasn’t contacted Dodd, he hasn’t been in the loop on this issue at all.

Obama actually has been… you know… doing something.

But now John McCain is going to ride into Washington and solve the problem?

The Republicans may need him to herd cats, but that’s about the only useful thing he might be able to do. It is much more likely that he will just wind up getting in the way.

Meanwhile, Palin showed America how spectacularly unprepared she is for the office she is seeking with a pitiful performance during her interview with Couric. The reason the McCain campaign has kept her cloistered has become pretty clear — she’s not ready. Not even close.

So let’s see… McCain wants to cancel Friday’s debate… and then reschedule on the night the VP debate was supposed to occur…. leaving the VP debate to perhaps be rescheduled at some later time (or not)?

Are people really falling for this?

There’s nothing to “fall” for. It’s simply a case of the leader of one of the nation’s two political parties doing what is right. The nation is facing a financial calamity unless decisive action is taken soon. But while the action must be decisive, it must also be prudent as well. As such, it requires the presence of all of the nation’s leading political figures so that they can agree on a course of action. That’s their job, not running for president.

I can assure you that Sarah Palin isn’t afraid to debate Joe Biden. My 10-year old niece wouldn’t be afraid to debate Joe Biden. The guy is as dumb as a tree stump.

      she’s not ready

Don’t agree at all. She’s not used to the sharp wit of the DC crowd but she’s already more popular than Obama – and OK that ain’t saying much as there’s a rat in our neighborhood that’s more popular than Obama. But still all. You of all people shouldn’t come using McCain’s ad themes – ‘not ready’. If you’re really worried about ‘not ready’ you should try to convince your Obama to drop out now.

If Obama drops out now he may be able to salvage his political career. Otherwise he’ll end up sharing a jail cell with his buddy Rezko.

Breaking: now CNN are making fun of Obama. He’s basically flip-flopping on the whole campaign or not thing. It’s making him look utterly ridiculous – again.

What a jerk he is. He’s not ready. No way. He can’t even complete a sentence without a teleprompter and half a dozen ‘ums’ and ‘uhs’. Brilliant? Yeah right. Gifted? Tell me another joke. Loser? Yes, you bet.

Go tell him, dude. Call him up and tell him. ‘Senator Obama, I don’t think you’re ready. Not for much of anything. Except a prison cell. Won’t you please step down now FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY?’

Try it. Call him up. He might listen to you. Do something patriotic.

      • mackeral

Ok thanks. I’ll get right on that.

And I get that you don’t like Obama’s speaking style. All those ‘uhs’ and pauses make you think he isn’t intelligent. I don’t agree – I think the guy is very smart, and answers questions thoughtfully. So we’ll have disagree about that I guess.

John McCain also has that ability… but he’s been very cagey lately, and has stuck to his talking points so rigidly that he no longer seems natural at all… and that’s a shame.

Palin sounds like shes reading mental note cards.

        • Zelda Crunch

I think the guy is very smart

The only possible way you can think that is if you’re not particularly smart yourself. Shoe seems to fit.

Here’s your missing apostrophe: ‘. I guess I was right in the above.

And no, she’s not reading cards – but she is being coached very carefully as this dirty DC game – and in particular the slime politics of Obama – are nothing to play around with.

You fuckwads always compare your PRESIDENTIAL candidate with a VP candidate. That as good as you can do? You’ve already conceded the real presidential candidates (Hillary, John) are out of your league?

Oh, and to be fair, I think I mentioned Obama, McCain, and Palin. But I did leave out Biden… who is a gaffe machine. So there you go.

Joe Biden got into a shout down with David Axelrod over returning to Washington to take part in the ongoing debate over the $700,000,000,000 bail out.

He told David that he was the elected Senator from Delaware and he was going to Washington to take part in the most important economic issue of this generation.

He told David that it would not look good for Obama If He, Joe Biden returned to Washington With McCain and Obama did not.

At one point he was heard to say in a low but agitated tone, “It’s not about politics,, it’s about leadership.”

    • howdyya’ll

what is the link for this?

      • William L. Donlon

        howdyya;ll:

It’s not important how I know, Just that I know.

There is a growing rift between the Biden Team and the Obama campaign.

The Obama people have clearly won over the Biden people in a way they never did over the Hillary people.

They miss few opportunities to rub it in, like FDR went on T.V. in 1929.

Biden people see that as a reasonable and harmless gaff.

Biden people look at the Obama people as “Arrogant Ameteures who make huge mistakes.

Attacking Palin instead of ignoring her was seen by Biden as a big mistake as did the Clintons.

They feel that McCain is out playing Obama on the economy, an issue which will determine the election and one the Democrats should own.

Biden people feel the McCain is constantly eating Obama”s lunch.

In Short. there is growing disrespect for each other.

At the end of the day Obama was “Schooled” by Biden, McCain and Bush and is returning to Washington.

It’s the Economic Dec, 7th, 9/11 and “All Hands On Deck”

Good for, Joe. I like Biden, always have. Do you have a link on this report, William? Who referenced, sourced the comments? I’d like to read the source material myself.

An if it’s accurate? Joey Biden gets a thumbs up from me. He’s being wasted on this ticket.

      • Zelda Crunch

I do not like Joe. Every time I hear his name I sort of assume his perennial hangover. ;)

      • Docelder

Delaware makes me think of seedy credit card advertisements for some reason.

Honestly I really don’t care for any debates, Obama did not want to debate Hillary, he did not want town hall meetings with Mc Cain and all of you Obama supporters were quiet happy with that.

Now one debate McCain is asking to put off there is a big cry about oh we must hear Obama, hear what more uhh ah uhhh, am sure he is going to have a few of those in there.

Is there any debate that Obama was outstanding he bombed all, he is not a debater yes he can give a well written speech but debating nope he fails big time, so am 100% sure am not missing anything if it does not happen

    • Zelda Crunch

Obama’s like that episode of Wonder Years where Kevin’s rock group don’t know a single song but the police stop them from playing so they look the heroes.

Is there any debate that Obama was outstanding

Yes. The Britney Spears Styrofoam Greek Column Debate. Actually that wasn’t a debate but Obama doesn’t know it and don’t tell him.

    • Docelder

Exactly, he was running from Hillary on debates, and from the town hall meetings. Makes you wonder doesn’t it? Maybe Obama thinks he has some insider knowledge. He hasn’t gotten any smarter. Maybe the thing is rigged? Maybe Alelrod already has the questions and has prepared Obama’s answers and they have already been transcribed into the teleprompter?

  • Illinois_gal

Looks like Obama will do as much for America as he has done for Illinois.

    No Obama!!

  • Carol

Senator Obama has been working all week with leaders in Congress, Secretary Paulsen, and Chairman Bernanke to improve this proposal, and he has said that he will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution.

How in the world could Obama have been working all week w/Congress, Sec. Paulsen and Chairman Bernanke when Sec. Paulsen and Chairman Bernanke have been in front of Congress in DC explaining the whys and wherefores of this mess and The Messiah is in Florida cramming for the debate?

He has no more been in contact with the Secretary and Chairman than I have. He probably has been getting his talking points from Nancy Pelosi.

    What a fraud!

    • tampagurl

For sure, I didn’t believe him when he said he called McCain first and didn’t reach him.

He knew McCain wouldn’t get into the childish game of no you didn’t, yes I did. Obama= liar

  • MrMike

Anybody hear anything about the V P debates being canceled? It’s the big thing over at Kos along with the usual Palin bashing. Also MyDD has a story up that McCain didn’t return to Washington but instead was doing a taped interview with Katie Couric. Apparently he canceled on Letterman and that hack went ballistic with Keith Oberman aiding and abetting.

  • MrMike

Have the V P debates been canceled?

  • Im Hopen

    PRESENT!
