Breaking: “Paulson Pleaded for McCain to Save Bailout”

Via Memeorandum, and from Newsbusters.org’s Mark Finkelstein:

So much for a "stunt."

John McCain got involved in the bailout negotiations after Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told Sen. Lindsey Graham yesterday that the bailout plan would fail unless McCain came in and brought balky Republicans aboard. That’s what Bob Schieffer reported on this morning’s Early Show. Schieffer’s account stands in stark contrast with the allegation by Dems like Barney Frank and their MSM cohorts that McCain’s moves of yesterday were nothing more than a political "stunt."

Here was Schieffer speaking with the Early Show’s Maggie Rodriguez at 7:05 AM EDT today:

BOB SCHIEFFER: I am told, Maggie, that the way McCain got involved in this in the first place, the Treasury Secretary was briefing Republicans in the House yesterday, the Republican conference, asked how many were ready to support the bailout plan. Only four of them held up their hands. Paulson then called, according to my sources, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is very close to John McCain, and told him: you’ve got to get the people in the McCain campaign, you’ve got to convince John McCain to give these Republicans some political cover. If you don’t do that, this whole bailout plan is going to fail. So that’s how, McCain, apparently, became involved.

Continued Schieffer . . .

SCHIEFFER: He has gotten what he wants, he’s going to have this meeting, kind of a summit today with the president and Barack Obama. …

Read all.

    ahhhh
all that work cultivating the stunt thing for nothing.
    poor bots.

    • http://budwhite.wordpress.com/ Bud White

Yes, people in Washington actually like McCain. I don’t think the same is true of Obama.

      • http://JohnMcCain.com Chockablock “Hillawee can you change my diapy pwease?” Opampers

Mac is the go to guy. Hillary would be the go to gal if those assholes in the DNC did not rig the primary and shaft her and the nation.

        • Ani

          Correct.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/PaulFVillarreal Paul F. Villarreal

Obama is falling apart on the bailout/econ issue. This is reflected in today’s Gallup, and it is obviously showing up in his camp’s internal polls as well, which is why he’s doing all the interviews today, trying to save his bony behind from plummeting further in the polls.

If you haven’t heard, Obama is going berserk over the new NRA ads, one in particular.

            http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Obama_seeks_to_take_down_NRA_ad.html?showall

Here is the ad, ‘Hunter,’ that Team Obama is getting all crazy about:

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_nrSR5N7wI

As most recall, Team Obama tried this tactic over the American Issues Project William Ayers ad, this one:

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXXr9oLd9S4

Impact that Team Obama’s threats had: Zero.

Number of stations that took down the ad, or cut its run short: Zero.

Expect the same thing here with the NRA spot. All that Obama’s kvetching will do, once again, is make sure more people see the ad. The spot is running, I believe, in both PA and OH, ‘Bitter Clinger’ land.

Please pass this ad along, share it with everyone you know. People need to see this stuff.

            • http://JohnMcCain.com Chockablock “Hillawee can you change my diapy pwease?” Opampers

LMAO at that NRA ad. I can see why Opampers has his diaper ruffled.

Oh it’s definitely not true of Obama.

    • Kal

Can somebody explain what, if any, relationship there is between that dinner at the Hyatt for A-jad tonight, Valerie Jarrett, and BO?

      • 30yrdem-not any more

I read where code pink was meeting with A-jad and they bundled money for Obama…

        • Kal

          Who is code pink?

        • http://investigatebarackobama.wordpress.com/about/ kat in your hat

code pink? I only know of Jodie Evans meeting with Chavez.

      • http://investigatebarackobama.wordpress.com/about/ kat in your hat

Dunno. I know Penny Pritzker is the heiress of Hyatt Hotels and she is Obama’s campaign finance chair.

        • TeakWoodKite

And just so it’s clear the Iranian president had a talky with some wonderful Americans at her grand Hyatt in NY.

They will rent to anyone it seems. Even people who want Israel annihilated.

        • tzada

          Scrambling for money? ;)
Am pretty sure Valerie Jarrett is an Iranian, who Obama keeps pretty much hidden. Why?

Penny Pritzker was part of the Superior Bank that failed. Many think that bank failure and it’s predatory lending has lead to todays problems. It cost tax payers 1 billion dollars. Bear Sterns got involved and that mess cost taxpayers 30 Million. Nice people Bamino hangs with.

WASHINGTON—Barack Obama campaign finance chair Penny Pritzker and Democratic National Committee finance chair Phil Murphy have a message for some 45 high end slackers part of the National Finance Committee: make the 1,000 calls they all collectively promised to make or they will find someone who will. That’s in a memo just sent to Obama’s best fund-raisers. Pritzker and Murphy are also hunting for hot prospects, asking each NFC member to come up with 25 names. The duo is offering to “research their giving history” to give them some good intelligence before they make the contact.

          Here’s the memo

Subject: Call-a-thon Update / Next Phase from Penny Pritzker & Phil Murphy

The call-a-thon has produced great results but we still have more work to do.
Thank you to those who have taken the time and effort to make these calls. It
is paying off tremendously. We know this is not easy work.

          http://blogs.suntimes.com/cgi-bin/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=25&search=pritzker

      • Zelda Crunch

Hyatt == Pritzker sisters. They also work for and invest in MoveOn and Obama. They’re behind the sub-prime meltdown. They still owe something like half a billion dollars to the SEC after the latter busted them. I know the Pritzkers have invested at least $5 million in MoveOn. They’ve worked with Soros on that. One of them is Obama’s campaign finance manager. ;)

    • No way No Mccain

No it is a stunt pure and simple and you will see it in Nov. McCain is losing and desperate. Too bad so freakin sad.

[ADMINISTRATOR: YOU'RE NOW ON MODERATION FOR SPAMMING THE COMMENT THREADS.]

      • Obama: An Ego you can Believe in!

        hee hee…no-good little o-bot spammer.

    • SFhillary

You are all painfully deluded. You have no idea what a disaster just occurred today in Washington. McCain’s paracute into DC just torched the bailout agreement that everyone had reached. He just blew the deal. Watch the stock market collapse tomorrow so McCain can posture and pretend he has anything constructive to say. In another thread people asked me why I was so pissed. I’ll tell you why: because I know what the fuck is going on. I can’t say my real name for reasons that would be obvious if I said my real name, but let me tell you guys something: your boy Mccain is an ignorant fucking asshole and EVERYBODY in Washington D.C. knows it. He is, almost without question, the most despised Senator, even by many members of his own party. He is NOTORIOUS for his stupidity (he managed to graduate at the very bottom of his Naval Academy class) and lack of interest in any legislation. He has run the most appallingly dishonest campaign in recent history — just today he got busted for having his own campaign secretly paying off Rick Davis’ lobbying firm for the Fannie Mae. HIS OWN CAMPAIGN.

Now this bailout. If you believe the hype, it really has to get done to stave off true economic catastrophe. And from everything I am hearing from my friends in D.C., it was pretty much a done deal until McCain flung himself into the middle of things and all of a sudden there’s another deal on the table, the House Republicans don’t like the deal they just spent the entire week negotiating, the President is doing whatever the McCain campaign tells him to do, Obama is just trying not to cause trouble in his own right (because, as always, he is being responsible and knows that it’s guys like Barney Frank who are really doing the heavy lifting here), and the whole thing is teetering on the verge of true disaster.

All because John McCain slipped in the polls and needed a way to posture as a leader. Which he fucking isn’t. God in Heaven. What a dickhead.

If I were a Democratic Congressman today, I would walk away from the table, buy property in Costa Rica and just give up. It’s patently obvious that the Republicans couldn’t give a shit about reaching a deal — they just want to find a way to spin it to blame everything on Bush and the Democrats and try to help McCain get elected. I’ve never seen a more irresponsible group of assholes in my entire life.

I don’t blame you PUMAs, not really. You don’t have a clue. You read a press release specifically written to favor McCain and probably honestly think it has something to do with reality.

I have been saying for weeks here that the Republicans would just steal your economic future. I had no idea it would happen this quickly, but here it is in front of you. I’ll say it once more: if McCain is elected, this country is finished. I’m rich enough to just buy property up in Vancouver or something, but anyone who isn’t is really, really screwed. The GOP, given another run at things, will just loot what’s left and then fly overseas. This is going to be a very, very sad place a decade from now if we don’t turn things around. And ONLY DEMOCRATS will be able to turn things around. And don’t kid yourselves that we can hold out for Hillary. We can’t. What’s happening in D.C. right now — the most appalling spectacle I have ever witnessed in over twenty years of covering national politics — makes that painfully clear. Either Obama and the Democrats win this thing, or this country is toast.

Most of you will not take this seriously. I hope you’ll remember it in the future, though. At any rate, I’m finished with this site, for real this time. Life is too short and I need to start really working harder for the Obama campaign. Good luck to you all. Seriously. I hope your families survive what’s coming. It won’t be pretty, especially if the GOP pulls off the scam that I see coming now.

P.S. Please watch Sarah Palin’s Couric interview and ask yourself if she really is capable of leading this country.

      • meileen

I’d like my eggs over medium with that toast.

        • SFhillary

LOL. Wait till you see what food inflation looks like when the dollar crashes next year. You won’t be able to afford eggs.

          You think I’m kidding.

          • Ferd McBerfle

            You think I’m kidding.

Actually, I think you’re an insufferable idiot who lives in a basement with only a monitor for a friend. I think I hear your Mother calling you. Don’t ket the door hit you on the wway out, toodles.

            • SFhillary

Okay. I’ll come back on Election Day to say hi to everyone. I’m fairly confident I’ll be here to taunt you with Obama’s big victory. But if McCain’s jackassery actually saves the day, I’ll come back to offer my congratulations while I make plans to leave the country.

As for all of you over the past couple months who’ve referred to me, like the guy does above, as an unemployed kid: wrong. I am a married 46-year-old male with a young daughter and a very, very successful career in the media. Yes, I’m a Democrat. Yes, I love the Clintons and would have gladly worked for HRC had she won. Yes, I think you are all a bunch of deluded fools for hating Obama so much and (especially) for supporting this ass clown Republican candidate. And I beg you to do some more reading. The GOP will fuck you over in a heartbeat if you give them any more power. They will steal trillions of dollars, leave future budgets in hopeless deficit, then flee the country.

Don’t believe me? Go read about how Dick Cheney just moved Halliburton’s legal base of operations to Dubai. It has already begun.

Don’t believe me? Go read about how the Pentagon just moved a full Army unit into permanent basing within the United States, for the first time in about 130 years, in order to deal with “civil unrest.”

The downfall is coming. And all you fools who are busy trying to get John McCain elected are helping it happen.

Oh well, whatever, that’s the great wheel of history. See you all on the evening of November 4th. If you want to know what’s happening, check in with fivethirtyeight.com once a day. Nate Silver is the single best writer on this election if you really want to know the truth.

              • Duras

Somehow I doubt we’ll see you here on Nov. 5th.

The inconvenient fact is that most of the 10%-15% of the population that is still “undecided” are lower middle-class and middle-class whites … the same demographic group that voted for Hillary Clinton 2-to-1 in the primaries. And those were only Democrats.

I trust that you’re at least intelligent enough to figure out what this means for the general election. That’s precisely why the Dems have been squawking about “racism” so much lately. Their internal polling is telling them what’s ultimately going to happen.

Sorry, troll. But do be sure and stop by on Nov. 5th, OK?

                • SFhillary

I’ll be here on November 4th, win or less. That’s a promise. I thought you guys would like the latest reporting on what your hero did today:

KATIE COURIC: And, Bob, I understand that John McCain actually floated an alternative plan. What can you tell us about that?

BOB ORR We’re told at the White House Senator McCain offered an alternative plan that would include fewer regulations and more corporate tax breaks for businesses, kind of a private solution. But we’re also told those ideas angered and surprised Democrats like banking chairman Chris Dodd who now says he thinks the White House summit was more of a political stunt for McCain.

Nice! Just what we need — more of the same. Happy voting, you ignorant tools of the thieves who are stealing your children’s income right out from under your dumbass noses.

Unbelievable. More deregulation and lower corporate taxes — that’s the John McCain plan. And you morons are voting for him.

                • SFhillary

BTW: when you want to know whose internal polling is predicting disaster, look to see which candidate is trying to shake things up, change the dynamic however he can, even if it means taking huge what-have-we-got-to-lose risks, like, say, “suspend his campaign,” suggest postponing debates, try to torch a bipartisan emergency banking system bailout so there’s an even greater emergency. Everything John McCain has done for the past 48 hours since the latest round of polling showed him clearly behind in the national numbers and falling out of reach in one swing state after another.

It is McCain whose internal polling led him to push the panic button this week. That is blindingly obvious to anyone with an IQ over around 90.

And you will get what you deserve, call it karma, call it reaping what you sow, just know it is a law of physics, that says what evver you do to someone else, will come back to kick the crap out of you, and when it does you enemies will feel bad for you. Trust that, you silly, silly ,little person. The first thing obama will do is to turn on you. you know why? Cause you don’t like rules, and with people like obama, rules are important, they keep you in your place. You won’t be rubbing anything very long. See i know how to follow rules, I might not like em but i’ll do it. Just like I don’t like Republicans but since you nix the next best thing, i will do what i have to do to make the best of it. But not you. you think you can break those rules, and force what you want on other people. LOL, people like obama use that same arrogence, to screw you, just like someone is doing it to him. This is what people like Aryers love, bloated, spoiled americans who will sell their freedom for beads why cause they don’t think it can be taken away. Freedom is not your birthright and you are not entitled, it is an inheritance, that people worked hard for, and you have about as much respect for it as Paris Hilton does hers. Don’t be shocked when you are in prison breaking out in hives cause you never thought, obama would screw you over. any one that will have wright as a pastor does not like you. People like freedom fighter see you as a means to an end. And unfortunately for him Obama doesn’t give rat ass about him either. Stupid, stupid little kids ready to chuck everything for hope.

Sigh. It is the Republicans who loot America and the Democrats who clean up after them. It has been that way for over a generation now and it is still that way today. This notion of yours that Hillary would have been great but Obama would be a disaster is — I don’t know how to even describe it. It will be deeply, world-historically tragic if enough of you manage to tip states like Pennsylvania, which is unlikely but perhaps still possible.

dear politics are no ones friends but their own. they have all screwed america, if you knew that one thing, you might actually have a chance. Politicians are preditors they are looking for their next meal, but like some preditors like dogs and cats, they can be useful. But never for get what they are. And just like different dogs are breed for different thing, differnet politics are the same same way. I have dachshunds, they are hounds, but because they are bred to think for themselves they are stubborn as hell. YOu have to make hem work for you. Not you for them. Grown ups understand that.

“It is the Republicans who loot America and the Democrats who clean up after them.”

You know, I’ve always believed that, too, at least until this election, which has been a real eye-opener. This mortgage meltdown is a prime example. It turns out that the Republicans have been trying to reform Fannie and Freddie since at least 2001, and it’s been the Democrats who have stood in their way. Why? It appears that an awful lot of money from Freddie and Fannie has crossed their palms, with most of it going to Chris Dodd and Barack Obama. So just who, exactly, is looting the country?

                • Jules

People like you are called “name droppers.” You know, people who hint that they know powerful people, sometimes they’ll say a name outright but othertimes it’s just a “hush, hush, I’d say the name of this most famous powerful person I know but cannot go against my confidentiality.” At which point those of us with good BS detectors just roll our eyes and stop listening to whatever the poser has to say.

You totally lost your credibility by making out like you were some rich powerful insider after all the juvenile crap you’ve posted here for eons.

SFhillary, it’s funny. You think McCain pulled a stunt, but you can’t see that the dems came out earlier in the day to say “everything is fine!” as a stunt? They lied, just so it looked like they didn’t need McCain and Obama to be in town.

That didn’t work, so then they started screaming and pouting during the negotiations (just to then blame McCain). You REALLY think that the democrats wouldn’t pull a stunt? Just republicans??

    This was on this morning

What is up with this site a post will be there you comment and it says the page you are looking for blah blah…
Happened to me two times today same post…

It is about race and voting skin color basically…

    my comment was…
I think Obama getting 95% or more of the black vote should make up for the people not voting for him because of skin color…anyway the blacks are the ones who are being racist…not whites..Obama has his share of the white vote…look at other elections…Does Obama expect all of the white vote? give me a break..he is such a whiner and has the media doing his dirty work… he is just so repulsive..

I won’t try to comment when I see it again.

  • http://panmetron.blogspot.com PanMetron

Can you imagine anyone, in the administration or in either house of Congress, thinking “If only Barack Obama were here we could get through this legislative logjam”?1?

Of course not! Because Obama is no legislator. He’s no leader of any substance, he is a walking talking publicity stunt. The only time Democrats will call on him is when they need promotional value or fundraising buzz.

McCain on the other hand has real legislative clout and policy leverage. That doesn’t mean he’s a miracle-worker – he never claimed to be – but it means he knows how to roll up his sleeves and govern. And more importantly, his colleagues know that about him.

    • 30yrdem-not any more

  • MaggiefromMichigan

And now there’s this from ABC News. In the article Barney Frank blames McCain. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=5884701&page=1
Frankly it’s always bothered me that these jokers who run for office get to keep their day jobs and our taxpayer money for their salaries when they’re not even working.
It seems odd that Obama isn’t rolling up his sleeves and getting back to work if this is such a huge crisis that will send us into financial despair if it’s not solved IMMEDIATELY.
Oh yes I’m very po’ed about this fiasco as an honest taxpayer who’s played by the rules and payed taxes up the wazoo. Enough already.

Barney frank is a scumball from beneath the earth.

    • Leisa

Oh course it is McCain’s fault… the democrats do not want him leaving this as a winner. They are putting partisan politics before country.

I am personally glad that they are not rushing to an agreement. That bailout is way too much money to hand over without oversight.

I think that Frank, Dodd, and Schummer should stay out of this negotiation, I do not trust them at all…

      • Zelda Crunch

They are putting partisan politics before country.

        Yes.

That bailout is way too much money to hand over without oversight.

I don’t think that matters. You’ll get that back anyway. I think what McCain and Hillary want is more than an injection – they want regulation to stop it from happening again. But the Dems don’t want to think that far because they’ll lose votes from their constituencies. That’s how the whole thing started.

I think that Frank, Dodd, and Schummer should stay out of this negotiation, I do not trust them at all…

I don’t know anyone who trusts them.

if McCain has any ideas he should contribute.

That just means Oblahblah needs a new set of ideas, which he will take from anyone including his opponent. I’ve never seen a candidate who has so little to offer of his own.

          He’s a parasitic sponge.

  • Crystal

So… Obama was in contact with Paulson all week long, but when Paulson needed help, he reached out for McCain. Wow

  • Shiloh

Let me get this straight: The media is going to act as announcer and call the plays for a contest in Washington where the opponents have to wheel and deal across the aisle – and it’s John McCain vs Barack Obama? I laugh my ass off! If McCain somehow engineered this showdown at bitter creek then he is a freaking genius because he is playing entirely in the element where he is king and where Obama never developed the chits to play. Yeah he has the announcer on his side, but the game is out there on the field.

  • wodiej

great post….more stupidity from the Democrats. Reid wants McCain there, then he says they don’t need him and then we find out that Paulson asked McCain to be there to get Repub’s on board. What a bunch of fucking MORONS…..

    • jd4hill

      Agreed.

What I finds hilarious are the trolls who are out in force telling us we are wrong and deluded and losing and so forth.

My response to them is: Congratulations on your ‘winning’ candidate. If he is going to win in such a landsllide and McCain is “desperate” as they claim, I wonder why they would waste precious time here spamming the comments and coming up with bizarre arguments. They should just pop a cold one, put their feet up and watch the show.

I personally do not have time to chase after ‘losers.’ I would turn my attention to more useful pursuits. Their presence here is verification that Obama is in trouble.

It is obvious Obama will not get one vote with their tactics. So why bother? Curiouser and
      curiouser.

      • Carolyn Mann

I keep wondering why the trolls come to sites like this at all. Obviously, no one here is buying what they’re selling. It’s a waste of their time and ours. Curiouser, for sure.

    • Zelda Crunch

Getting elected doesn’t mean they’re actually good at anything. Very few are good. Hillary, McCain… The rest are parasitic trash.

  • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

So, I’m listen to Obama say he is talking with and almost saying he’s negotiating the $700B deal. Only grudgingly does he accept that McCain might have role. Missed the quote but it is very condescending.

    • Crystal

I thought his “cameras change things” comments was especially telling. It’s like he’s offended that there is attention being placed on this issue. Does he think everything should be done behind closed doors?

      • Leisa

Yeah, he will have a transparent administration alright. :/

        • http://investigatebarackobama.wordpress.com/about/ kat in your hat

Ya, and you just KNOW the media wouldn’t let Obama get away with anything.

Man, if Obama became president, he could sell our entire country for cash and the media still would not report it.

          • Zelda Crunch

Do you think there will be a whistle blower in the media soon? For example someone from MSNBC that Fox can lure over? That would be a real sensation.

      • I Like Middleclassness

        You know what I’m wondering?

How has this deviation from his preparation for debate thrown Soebama off his game?

He was probably rolling right along, memorizing, sewing notes into the inside of his suit sleeve, and then BANG all of a sudden he had to actually do a job that involved something other than running for POTUS.

I do not think he will be able to recover from this break in his debate prep. If he had ONE core principle he could articulate in public and still get elected, it would not be a problem.

  • kcfromtx

They call McCain because he is the real post partisan candidate with a history of working to get the job done no matter which party get the credit.

    • Skiron

Yeah… that would be the McCain of 2000 you’re thinking of there. The McCain of 2008 is as partisan as they come.

      • Ferd McBerfle

Doesn’t that constant echo in your skull ever bother you? Just asking.

      • Zelda Crunch

BO: yeah, I might go back to Florida for debate prep, and then I definitely going to Ole Miss, but you call me if you need me. …Wait a minute on second thought I’m in Washington so I might stay…we’ll see.

  • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

AND, Obama is still pushing the debate.

I am surprised that Brit Hume didn’t question his statements–maybe in shock that he even had Obama on as he did say something like that at the beginning.

Anyway, wasn’t the report last night about the “joint statement” corrected that Obama campaign sent it out without the approval of McCain. That it was NOT a joint statement?

    • Zelda Crunch

Yeah he’s pushing because McCain is in DC effectively acting as the prez Obama can never be. If Obama could have pulled a stunt he would have done it – but he’d be a total flop in DC so they must have nixed the idea. Obama wants McCain out of DC because McCain is racking up incredible brownie points and GE votes.

  • 30yrdem-not any more

I am watching CBC to see Palin, Obama and McCain were on…when she ask BO if he felt it was worth his time to be on Washington now he said he (my version)he liked using phones and staying up on things that way that it was just a photo op.

Bogus Poll Intended to Boost Obama

The recent Washington Post-ABC poll is a textbook example of how partisan media outlets manipulate “news.”

As we enter into the final month of the election, we will be bombarded with all sorts of information intended to sway our votes. We will, of course, be inundated with television commercials, direct mail pieces, radio ads, and automated phone calls. But we will also be subjected to numerous polls, many of which will be just as partisan as the political propaganda the candidates are relying upon.

Dems are playing politics, it was Harry Reid who for 2 days begged mac to come back and build consensus. Then he comes back and dumb old harry shoots off his lips contradicting himself.
Yesterday 4 republicans were for the deal. McCain is there to be sure the right deal goes through.
This is bordering on socialism and the public is pissed off about this. Democrats are trying to load the bail with giveaways for their goons and were not having it.

We need something for sure, but McCain and the pubs want safeguards for us taxpayers and not just hand over 700 billion. I gaurantee a deal is reached tommorow.
To say they had a deal is just a lie or you believe the lies Barney Frank(the guy who is a HUGE factor in creating this mess) and harry reid say and thought you were telling the truth.

McCain represents leadership. I know it angers you to see that. Especially when the dem running is a complete weasel”call me, if you need me”
THen Bush called his bluff and he ran to his beck and call. Bush runs obama, how does that make you feel? Obama got played on this whole issue. McCain showed he was a man of action while obama was whining about sitting in Fla on vacation for debate prep.
Oh, and there will be a debate tomorrow. McCain is just knowcking Hussien off his square and preventing his prep.

Obama has had to cancel his plans to go back to practice for the debate tonight.

As per Fox News, Obama will have to show up for work this week-end even though he thinks he should debate McCain. Bush is planning for work on the financial crisis to last all week-end.

    Wow! Obama working?

  • 30yrdem-not any more

I am watching Lou Dobbs CNN…saying they have very different positions…some house rep. won’t back it..

  • lark

I think the press, CNN and MSNBC are going to be happy now and they will push to demoralize McCain. The chaos in the economy is looming and they are euphoric that they going to get many more viewers and their salaries are going to be raised substantially.

  • just me

If he had waited a while and did some real work and built up some experience he would not have to cram so much but we know hes greedy wants it all
    NOW NOW NOW…

he should step down he is not fit to lead.

  • James

Obama was on Fox with Brit Hume and he argued that presidential candidates are not needed in this crisis, that they must spend their time making their cases to the American people. He essentially admitted he’s more worried about his campaign than this crisis. It’s why McCain is up in the polls. Does Obama forget that he’s still a US senator?

    • Duras

Let me get this straight: The two leaders of the two major political parties in the country aren’t needed in Washington right now?

Jeez, what a putz. God help us if the charlatin actually gets elected.

      • Crystal

They aren’t needed when Obama think he might have to take a serious stance on something and have the whole world know he’s a liar WHEN he flip-flops.

I heard a Repub today, don’t know if he was a Rep. or Sen., say that if you eliminate the cap gains tax and the repatriation tax for a couple or 3 years, money would flow back into the markets and you wouldn’t need such a humongous gov bailout. Sounded like a good idea.

    • 30yrdem-not any more

Did you happen to see the little guy Denis K. say McCain did the right thing…he is a dem..said he has been on that floor and he didn’t see an agreement being reached (more or less)

  • S. Markom

Why does Obama desperately want this debate Friday night and no later?

Obama knows this will be his weakest moment. He also knows that all the news Saturday and Sunday morning will be dominated by the financial crisis and coverage of the debate will be minimized and relegated to the back pages.

He won’t have that same opportunity if the debate is delayed.

    • James

And also of course, he wants time to cram for the debate like a geography exam and doesn’t want to waste time in Washington, you know, actually doing his job. He looked so out of place at the White House meeting. Even Bush looked competent compared to him (can’t believe I used ‘Bush’ and ‘competent’ in the same sentence).

    • NoBO

The way things are looking at the moment, with no agreement in sight, it’s harder than ever to tell if McCain will go to the debate or not. He puts country first. What if it were to be delayed just 24 hrs.?

      • S. Markom

Unless they can come to an agreement tomorrow, McCain will not be at the debate.

The fact is that this bail out deal does not at all have significant support by the electorate.

The only people upset with the possibility of a postponement of this debate are the Obama campaign and his media enablers.

If McCain feels forced to go to Mississippi then he will explain to the 60 million watching WHY he stopped his campaign and the importance of what he is doing.

    • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

“Why does Obama desperately want this debate Friday night and no later?”

Beats me, I always thought he was a lousy debater.

My only explaination is that McCain’s record on backing the Reagan-style economic measures gives him an advantage.

He could fuck it up, he could come out of it looking like he has beams of sunshine coming out of his ass.

All we have to do is wait.

      • csuzeq

Is the telepromter only booted for the one night? After that they can’t get it again?

Why does he want to debate?

I used to enjoy the debates and was looking forward to watching Barfy bury himself again, but honestly I do not need a debate. I won’t be voting BHO. I should probably just take a nap until 11/4!

Fox is reporting that Reid completely lost it in the meeting, while earlier in the day claiming all was resolved.

To me it sounds like the Dems thought they had Reps over a barrel and the Reps said no.

‘Cover’ might be a perfect description, since Bush has indicated they are willing to work on oversight, CEO pay, etc.

So McCain showing up in town stole the issue from the Dems and Reid snapped.

Great move by the Maverick. He is not allowing the Dems to steal McCain’s 2005 Freddie and Fannie warning.

While he was going bi-partisan this morning with Bill. Imagine if there was McCain-Clinton solution for this mess?

One of Brit’s panel just suggested McCain-Frank, but would he really do it this election year? He seemed too partisan on all the news segments I’ve seen recently.

    • S. Markom

While he was going bi-partisan this morning with Bill. Imagine if there was McCain-Clinton solution for this mess?

Given Bill Clinton’s support of McCain going back to DC you could be correct, because there is a huge opening for Hillary.

Barney Frank and Chuck Schumer are deperate to resolve this because they were instrumental in causing this. So it would be a bailout for them, politically.

I think Democrats are now reaping the very poor leaderhip of Pelosi and of Reid.

      • lark

That would do it. That would do it. A McCain / Clinton solution. I bet that’s what’s going to happen.

        • S. Markom

Hillary is the real Democratic Party leader (not Obama) and she has the ability to reign together a bipartisan agreement with McCain will have a more difficult time doing the same on his side.

  • S. Markom

Obama is showing that he is nothing more than a wind-up toy for Democrats with the sole purpose of getting himself elected. The grown ups will do all the heavy lifting for him.

Obama is upset because McCain was asked to return to DC by Paulsen and by Reid to help negotiate this. Obama is unnecessary.

Obama should also listen to his financial guru, Warren Buffet, who said that these negotiations going into the weekend were critical to our financial health.

    • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

“he is nothing more than a wind-up toy for Democrats with the sole purpose of getting himself elected”

Isn’t that what candidates do? Do the elected thing, I mean.

      • S. Markom

See that is exactly what Obama is – a professional candidate.

While McCain understands that he does have a real job being a Senator. That’s something Obama has not quite got a handle on yet or maybe he doesn’t care.

        • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

So by comparison McCain is an amateur candidate, a guy who has run two House and four Senate campaigns?

I’m sorry, this does fall dangerously close to tweaking the lemming but you guys are just SO COOL when you get panicky.

          • S. Markom

A professional candidate is someone who is good at only one thing. Just like a professional you-know-what.

Obama was in unfamiliar territory today – trying to do his job – but really did not know what to do and was told by Reid to just sit there and don’t say anything.

McCain is a very good candidate but understands that he has a real job as Senator which is not just a title as Obama believes.

            • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

I’ve seen me a professional “what you know” and maybe even a professional “know you what” but I just can’t place those “you know whats”.

  • WMCB

Investments would increase 15% automatically if the tax was lifted.
There are certainly ways to work around this without such a huge bailout. I want an agreement to go through but i am not totally sold on the 700 billion.
There could be a different way.
McCain and pubs are worried about the taxpayer. That is the main issue holding this up. Dems want more cash pumped in the bill. Repubs want better protection for taxpayers. Dems must have thought they were going to get a trillion dollar bill of waste passed, but the GOP said no deal.
I agree. I think this should be WORKED on. Not just thrown together as fast as possible.
I am also not to keen on my tax dollars being given to poeple defaulting on their mortage. For one, i am paying off a house and the government is not going to help me. Pollster says election could end in landslide

The presidential election might be a tight race now, but one of the country’s top pollsters thinks the race will end in an electoral landslide.

John Zogby, president of Zogby International, told a group of businesspeople today that it’s up to Democratic Sen. Barack Obama to convince voters to go with him. If he’s not successful, the country will likely vote for “a comfortable old shoe”, that being Republican Sen. John McCain.

What do you think of this idea:

I’m against the $85 BILLION bailout of AIG. Instead, I’m in favor of giving
$85,000,000,000 to America in a ‘We Deserve It’ dividend. To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bona fide U.S. citizens, aged 18+.

Our population is about 301 million counting every man, woman and child. So, 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up. Now, divide 200 million, 18+ adults into $85 billon – that equals $425,000.00 each!
Yes, my plan is to give that $425,000 to every adult as a ‘We Deserve It’ dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So, let’s assume a tax rate of 30%. Everyone would pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25.5 billion right back to Uncle Sam! It also means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in
their pocket. A husband and wife would have $595,000.00!

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00?
    * Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved
    * Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads
    * Put away money for college – it’ll really be there
    * Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs
    * Buy a new car – create jobs
    * Invest in the market – capital drives growth
    * Pay for your parent’s medical insurance – health care improves
    * Enable Deadbeat Parents to come clean – or else

Remember this is for every adult U.S. citizen, 18 and older (including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehmann Brothers and every other company that is cutting back) and of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it! Instead of trickling out a puny $1,000.00 (‘Republican vote buy’) economic incentive.

If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U.S. citizen!!

As for AIG – liquidate it.
    * Sell off its parts.
    * Let American General go back to being American General.
    * Sell off the real estate.
    * Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

We deserve the money and AIG doesn’t. Sure it’s a crazy idea, but can you imagine the coast-to-coast block party?!

How do you spell Economic Boom? W-e D-e-s-e-r-v-e I-t d-i-v-i-d-e-n-d! I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion ‘WeDeserve It’ dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington, D.C..

And remember, the plan only really costs $59.5 billion because
$25.5 billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Sound like a joke? Really? Why?

So a third party told Schieffer that Paulson had contacted McCain’s lap dog and asked him to convince McCain to play Lone Ranger.

Since the deal fell apart reportedly due to the conservative Republicans hedging at the price tag, four possibilities are immediately apparent.

    1. It is all not true, that bullshit and gossip pass for mainstream news nowadays. Well that’s no surprise (psst…. Elvis is dead too).
    2. McCain’s lap dog told Paulson to fuck off.
    3. Graham did carry Paulson’s water and McCain was ineffective with the conservative Republicans who despise him.
    4. Clinton did it.

I’m torn between one and three.

Let us now retire for a remedial class in DUH!

    • S. Markom

It was Paulsen and Harry Reid who wanted McCain back in camp to try and bring together conservative Republicans with the more moderate ones.

The problem is that the GOP group have a point which is confirmed by polls. The elite may feel the world will cave in unless taxpayers pony up the cash to bail out these wall street firms and their overpaid executives – but main street is against it.

What will happen is that McCain will hammer out a negotiated settlement and as suggested here with possibly Hillary Clinton.

All this is making Obama look like a rookie and incapable of running a government. He’s the college freshman pledging a fratenity and told not to speak up when grownups are in the room.

      • http://www.despair.com/changewinds.html Smilin’ Jim

“What will happen is that McCain will hammer out a negotiated settlement and as suggested here with possibly Hillary Clinton.”

        Ahem…….

The problem is with the House Republicans.

Clinton and McCain are in the Senate.

Conservative Republicans view Hillary Clinton as the Antichrist. Accordingly, Clinton has light years less cachet with Republican troglodytes than does McCain whom they hate with a purple passion.

        Alternative 1
Accommodate the Republican deal-breakers in the House in October. Roll over and crush the shit out of them with the Democrat majority in February. Hells bells, crush the bastards now.

        Alternative 2
Let this thing fester with the deal slowly, slowly twisting in the wind all the while pointing to the Republican deal-breakers as the bastards that are going to lead to the repossession of your new 40-inch LCD HDTV. This is the tactic employed in 1932 even without HDTV.

We all know how that ended.

  • WildChild

The first good news I’ve heard all week. I was channel surfing and stopped on CNN. It seems that the people of Montana are a bit peeved that we are going to bail out the money men on Wall Street. One guy even said that they keep hearing from congress how we have do to of the bail out because the banks are too big to fail, gut it was thew congress that deregulated the industry in the first place and allowed the companies to get too big….to fail.

Bye bye Reagan revolution. See ya you “free” market crazy people. You’re dead. All that’s left is the hot and dirty part of digging the hole. By the way, what would you like on your tombstone. LOL and don’t even be thinking about pepperoni.

  • beachnan

Kudos to McCain for putting country first and party second. The current situation really showcases the two candidates, one candidate is willing to roll up his sleeves and get to work and LEAD, and the other candidate leaves it up to others to do all the work, and then expects to walk in and take credit for all their hard work. BO is not a leader. I am also curious why BO is so determined to have this debate on Friday. I saw on another blog, where someone was floating the idea that BO had been given the questions, and was practicing the answers. It does make sense, considering BO has been avoiding all debates and townhalls for weeks now. I don’t know if it’s true, but is seems plausible.

    • cynical

If you call politically exploiting a situation that’s a possible fabrication of the Bush administration “leading”, I suppose that makes John McCain a leader.

You don’t think it’s odd that this crisis suddenly appeared a few weeks before the presidential election?

Paulson, Bernanke, and Cox–the three guys doing their best to terrify Congress into giving the Bush administration a $700 billion blank check by Friday–are all Bush appointees, aren’t they?

McCain to the rescue! Of course, he hasn’t actually stated whether he’ll push or oppose the bail-out package, has he? It all depends on which he thinks the wind is blowing.

I want to hear what Sarah has to say. I’m sure she’s got a good grasp of the entire situation.

  • beachnan

Kind of like bobo. He’s waiting for everyone else to take action, and if the public likes it, he of course led the charge, if the public doesn’t like it, he had nothing to do with it. If you can’t see that bobo has no leadership skills, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Name anything, that bobo has ever had the lead on, that was successful. Please do not try and cite the primary season, as everyone knows that corrupt Chicago style politics were used in the caucuses, and he had to be dragged across the finish line by the DNC leaders, and the superdelegates. At least Sarah Palin has executive experience, first as a mayor, then as a govenor. Bobo could only dream of having that kind of experience.

    • cynical

There’s a difference between calm, thoughtful, carefully measured leadership and grandstanding. Obama didn’t feel a need to insert himself politically into the middle of delicate bi-partisan deliberations, or to put his campaign on hold and fly back to Washington to bounce around the corridors and look for photo ops. Nor did he go off half-cocked the day an apparent crisis surfaced, and announce that he’d immediately fire the head of the SEC–one of the persons who might be central to clearly defining the problem–before he had a clue about the complexities of what was actually going on.

  • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

I’d love to see Paulson saying something like, “Yes, my secretary spoke with Obama, passed along my greetings, but that’s it. As you’ve already heard, I’ve been working with McCain to get a deal done and didn’t have time for pleasantries with Sen. Obama. No disrespect intended, of course.
