Open Thread – Let ‘Er Rip

… but DO read this essay today by David Brooks in the New York Times. It’s a profoundly moving, intimate portrait of John McCain: “Thinking About McCain.”

Stay tuned for Uppity Woman’s story going up in a few minutes, and a lot more — from Reverend Amy, NancyA, and others!

One section of Brooks’s essay today:

I think first of the personal qualities. He was an unfailingly candid man. When other politicians described a meeting, they always ended up the heroes of the story. But McCain would always describe the meeting straight, emphasizing his own failings with more vigor than his accomplishments.

He is, for a politician, a humble man. The most important legacy of his prisoner-of-war days is that he witnessed others behaving more heroically than he did. This experience has given him a basic honesty when appraising himself.

His mood darkened as the Iraq war deteriorated, but his accomplishments mounted. I don’t think any senator had as impressive a few years as McCain did during this span of time.

He lobbied relentlessly for a change of strategy in Iraq, holding off the tide that would have had us accept defeat and leave Iraq to its genocide. He negotiated a complicated immigration bill with Ted Kennedy. He helped organize the Gang of 14 and helped save the Senate from polarized Armageddon over judicial nominations.

He voted against opportunist bills like the pork-laden energy package and the prescription drug plan. He led a crusade against Jack Abramoff and the sleaze-meisters in his own party and exposed corrupt Pentagon contracts.

I could fill this column with his accomplishments during this period, and not even mention the insights. At a defense conference in Munich, I saw him diagnose and confront Russian hegemony. Week after week, I saw him dissent from G.O.P. colleagues as their party lost its way.

Some people who cover the campaign seem to have no knowledge of anything but the campaign, but I can’t get these events — which were real and required the constant application of judgment, honor and courage — out of my head. …

Hope you’ll read it all. And Memeorandum.com has links to several blog commentaries on Brooks’s essay.

I see this every four years, believe me. Only the Clintons could overcome the repubs. I am reminded of Dukakis, Gore (not convincing), Kerry. Till election day, we were so sure that we would win. But in the end, it was a nightmare. Obama will face the same fate. He just doesn’t know it as yet. And after it happens, we democrats will be sad but we will re-create the democratic party. with centrists like hillary clinton. In the past, do you really know how rosy the polls looked till election day? the democrats took it for granted that they have won, according to the polls. Its the same scenario all over again.

    • bert

I won’t be sad if Obama loses, benny. I will be grateful Americans are so level headed.

      • Duras

And I will despair that Americans could so easily been taken in by an act of smoke and mirrors.

  • Duras

I am just literally aghast that the Democrats would have the audacity to try and give ACORN the responsibility for up to $120 billion in taxpayer money.

I hope McCain is on his game tonight and absolutely rips Barack a new a**hole. Most people out there in America are against a bailout. Once they understand the Democrats’ central role in creating this mess and hear how McCain tried to stop the runaway train in 2005 while Obama was raking in campaign contrubutions from Wall Street and looking the other way, I hope and pray that enough of them will come to realize just what a disaster a Barack Obama presidency would be.

NancyA, Uppity Woman, Eastan and Larry Johnson have all written great investigative pieces on Acorn — for months and months and months — here.

Then there are all the articles that Truthteller, Larry, Bud White, Medusa, and I have written about Obama’s horrendously crooked dealings with all the Chicago machine fat cats who made millions off cozy deals in public housing. Which he favored PRIVATIZING. Aaarghhh .. i meant to write that up today. Must do that. I’m going to add an update to this story.

    • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

The ACORN thing really freaks me out. I did not realize how completely corrupt the Democrats have become. I am voting third party downticket, maybe even a few Republican women (if available) in support of Sarah Palin and all women who feminists think aren’t “real” women.

I think there are more shenanigans than what we know now…below are excerpts from

        Is the U.S. Economy Safe?

What Banks And The Government Are Not Telling Us About 2009—The Next Shoes You Hear Drop May Be Very Loud Ones
        James Quinn August 4th 2008

What is the truth? The truth is deception. After reading the above quotes, it should be clear that politicians and government bureaucrats are lying to the public when they say that everything is all right. They do not know. Our economy and banking system is so complex and intertwined that no one knows where the next shoe will drop. Therefore, it is in our best interest to cut through all the crap and examine the facts with a skeptical eye.

Is an FDIC Bailout in Our Future?

During the S&L crisis in the early 1990s, 1,500 banks failed. So far, seven banks have failed in 2008, the largest being IndyMac. The FDIC has about $53 billion in funds to handle future bank failures. The IndyMac failure is expected to use $4 to $8 billion of those funds. Average Americans will lose $500 million in uninsured deposits in this failure. The FDIC says that they have 90 banks on their “watch list.” They do not reveal the banks on the list, so little old ladies with their life savings in local banks will be surprised when they go belly up. Based on the fact that IndyMac was not on their “watch list.” I wouldn’t put too much faith in their analysis.

Some 8,500 banks operate in the U.S. Based on an independent analysis by Chris Whalen from Institutional Risk Analytics, 8 percent of all banks, or around 700 banks have been identified as “troubled.” This is quite a divergence from the FDIC estimate. Should you believe a governmental agency that wants the public to remain in the dark to avoid bank runs, or an independent analysis based upon balance sheet analysis? The implications of 700 institutions failing are huge.

U.S. banks hold roughly $6.84 trillion in bank deposits. Almost $2.6 trillion of these deposits are uninsured. There is only $274 billion of the $6.84 trillion as cash on hand at banks. This means that $6.5 trillion has been loaned to consumers, businesses, developers, etc. The FDIC has $53 billion to cover $6.84 trillion of deposits. Does that give you a warm feeling?

This is a must read article. James Quinn has some great insights and more articles here. The fact that he wrote this in August gives me goosebumps.

I recommend The Cutting Edge News as a more balanced source of information on a variety of topics that are important to us. The traditional MSM outlets have sold out to corporate America and have become propagandists.

        • bert

I have heard that the Democrats want to bailout the car industry, too, and that it will be inserted in the October budget bill to be voted on next month. If true, would this be a way to get MI votes for the one?

          • Duras

Creeping socialism at work. The Dems would like nothing more than to turn the United States into the kind of cradle-to-grave welfare state that stagnated western Europe for so long.

    • Liz B

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if McCain just stood there and looked Obama in the eye and said it all to the American people, just totally spilled the beans on BO, we know it is never going to be revealed in the MSM about the contributions, and his ties to Wall St.
I would just love to see him tell Obama to stop lying.

    • Kal

No, I think its either 20% of recovery on the $700 billion, or 20% on the gain over the original $700 billion — neither of which is anywhere near $120 billion.

But don’t get me wrong; even 1 red cent would be way too much for that outfit.

I am stunned by this, and really glad that McC blew the lid off of it.

    A repeat, just for fun.

Two McCains tonight at the debate. One McCain covered in black skin and the other in white skin. But other than that Oblahblah has probably already completed his transformation in a full fledge McCain.

There is nothing that McCain has done or believed that Obama already has not done or believed before McCain believed it. And he will make it clear tonight and take away any confusion.

It is silly if you are confused since Oblahblah has already said what he is going to say repeatedly.

So what will be the difference between the two McCains?

Easy. One of the McCains after saying what McCain believe then he will proceed to also contradict what McCain believes. That you can call the McCain to the right and also to the left of the issue. That McCain you do not want to vote for. Vote for the McCain that says what he believes only once and is assertive and sure of his answers.

I believe this quality was the at the root of McCain’s comment about not knowing much about the economy (paraphrase). He made that remark during the primary season, with the specter of the big swinging (economic) dick, Mitt Romney – looming large. As McCain has demonstrated, he knows what’s good for the average taxpayer, and that’s all WE need to know!

Why the NBC/WSJ poll is bogus
Daily Kos: Why the NBC/WSJ poll is bogus

Exactly…all that money could be used to shore up Medicare or even help pay down the national debt…or build levees, or roads…or improve air traffic control…the list goes on and on…

But, going to “advocacy” groups?? Support of ommunity work should alloted be part of the normal process of legislation and be transparent…not groups that have problems with illegal activities and go way beyond “advocacy.”

But when do we get real oversight? I keep thinking of Rezko doing nothing for those old buildings and the tenants trying to live inside….and Obama keeping silent…

    • tzada

Add to it the Global Poverty Bill that obama co sponsored. that gives the UN rights of the US and gives them $845 BILLION which translates into $1.5 TRILLION if we have to finance it. Maybe Obama and Bush buddies the Saudis will loan it eh? Wonder how much of a finders fee they will kick back to Obama?
It has passed the Senate already. Any doubt Barack won’t sign that into law?

    • Annie Oakley

Someone said that $700B would fund every infrastructure project in the country. But the economic recovery they’re talking about never includes us.

I called my senator’s office, and they are very nice but very “duh.” I tried to explain it like this: The Republicans do something for the rich while letting the middle class continue to slowly sink. The Democrats always respond only to the “poor people” need help. So they institute some way to send some taxes to the poor, and they never get that it still doesn’t help the middle class! The Republicans worry about the rich. The Dems increase their take allegedly for fighting poverty, but it’s still just a net drain on average people. Seriously, why can’t the dems get this?

  • Sue

    I love John McCain.

Yes, if there was one thing in this country that needs to be torn down and rebuilt it is health care. • Karma

Kinda laughing at the thought…so I have to ask.

Did they know that ticker info is 15 minutes old?

Or did they at least have current info?

        • Duras

The American consumer most definitely bears a huge portion of the blame for this mess. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there …. maybe even millions …. who took out mortgages on homes at low teaser rates that they knew damn well they couldn’t afford to service when those rates re-set in a few years. But hey, all their friends were making bundles of money in real estate, and they wanted in on the action too. Besides, in three years the house would be worth more than they paid for it and rates would be lower, so they could just re-finance anyway, right? Or if worse comes to worse, flip the house and make a nice profit.

I’m sorry if this comes across as insensitive, but these people deserve to lose their asses.

    • lark

I concur with the rest of you and that’s why I don’t play. You can’t play unless you play full time and then there is a learning curve that extends for quite a while. If you try to multi-task you’ll pay.

Will GOP use a Guiliani-like mob ties such as used by his protege, ex-NYPD commissioner who got indicted and may serve up to 140 years of jail time? Or solicit Gotti, Jr. who is indicted for conspiracy and murder charges?

Will DEMs use an OJ Simpson-like black convict with jail time?

Given this information, do we have to worry about our personal safety too? For example, will our car be tampered with? Are we safe sleeping in the middle of the night in the privacy of our home as our habits and plans are well known in advanced due to bugging devices?

    Obama might keep Paulson

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said Sunday that if he’s elected, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson would be “involved” in the new administration’s transition – a very unusual move when the White House changes parties.

Paulson, 62, is the wealthy former chairman and chief executive of the investment bank Goldman Sachs, and is widely respected on Wall Street.

Obama’s announcement can be expected to reassure the business community, which initially had been worried about Obama’s plans to raise the tax on capital gains. But he has now said he would raise it much less than some had feared.

Obama has also indicated he might retain Defense Secretary Robert Gates as part of an effort to send a bipartisan signal at the start of his presidency

Thank you for linking to Brooks’ article. It has saddened me that I cannot vote Democrat this year for President. I was thinking of voting “present”; but the more I though about it, I realy, really, really did not want O and the DNC to be rewarded for their betrayal of the democratic process–you know, the idea that the majority should win–so I have been preparing myself to vote McCain. I’ve watched him during the election, and my opinion is teh same as Brooks’ in that regard. I would really like him to present himself more in terms of an overarching philosophy of government. I have found him personable and humble. I was first made to feel favorable toward him when Hillary mentioned, while she was still in the primary, that she could work with McCain if he won and she did not win the primary (which we know she did win but which the O claims as having won).

It’s a nice piece and I feel better about voting for him, when my concerns now are really for the down-ticket Dems in my state, whom I really admire. I am so afraid that the O’s candidacy is hurting them here.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who posted something positive about McCain today. I have been so depressed/frustrated in the last couple of weeks about this constant pounding the press, the Obama campaign, and other Republicans have poured on such a great man. McCain has to defend himself against everyone. The American people always talk about change, clean government, and sticking up for the little guy, but the polling shows that they really seem to like lip service and non-action. They like these crooked politicians with their shallow statements and general consensus on both sides of the aisle. I guess society in general doesn’t really want change and clean government, just keep the status quo. I am happy to say that I will proudly vote for McCain and go to bed that night with a clear conscience. If Obama gets elected and the same old dirty congress gets even more so, it will be the fault of the wishy-washy American public and they will get exactly what they deserve.Except for me and you guys and the wonderful David Brooks.

Come an work for America. You will be glad you did.

      Don’t be depressed!

The good guy is going to win this time around! You can count on it!

  • Jackarooty

Has anyone seen that awful 527 ad about McCain’s melanoma? Several doctors are interviewed about it being the worst form of skin cancer and imply how risky it would be for McCain to be elected.
I have only seen it aired on MSNBC. Yesterday there was an article in the NYT about it and guess who is the chairman of the PAC that put the ad up? Howard Dean’s brother.

I’ve had it and will be voting Republican up and down ticket. Can’t believe the Senate passed the Global Poverty Tax sponsored by Barky like someone mentioned above. Hopefully it won’t pass entirely through and get signed into law.

I’m so frustrated and fed up with our elected officials and their addition to OPM (as so aptly stated by Sarah Palin in her Sean Hannity interview). OPM = Other People’s Money. Many of us are so busy working our fingers to the bone that we just don’t have the time to effectively watch dog these crooks who are supposed to be working for us and our country.

Quick go to this blog on the dismal ratings of the new TV season. It made my day. Lots of people angry at the networks, media and celebrities voicing their opinions. Also, 0bama supporters calling people ugly names, the usual stuff. Here’s a comment that made me LMAO:

“you wanna see a funny new sitcom?

    just add a laugh track

to a harry reid press conference.”

    Priceless!

Brooks is coming back to earth now?
He has really liked the new kid on the block as well, but now to be on the safe side, he throws a bone to John.
He waited until the very end and then said that Hillary was beautiful in her concession speech.
With the polls staying close, some may be worried that the new President may view them as an enemy!
McCain may be more magnanimous than me…I would not trust them!
