That's what is interesting. He is a popular Senator there. He must be doing something else right.

Your cartoon certainly highlights a big difference between Obama and McCain on how they would be likely to approach spending the public's money if they becom president. I thought a legitimate use of earmarks was to provide for essential services in a state that aren't covered elsewhere in the federal budget. Certainly, the urgent need for special project funds are likely to differ from state to state. Obviously, the use of earmarks can be abused and frequently are. Perhaps this is why McCain is rigidly opposed to using them. On the other hand, since most all states have earmarked funds, does it raise a question whether Arizona is getting shortchanged when McCain has never requested any? However, if that were the case, wouldn't we be hearing a lot of complaints from his constituents? As for Obama's earmarked funds, a close look should be made as to which funds served urgent and legitimate needs in his state and which were clearly pork.

Pat your artistic talent is amazing to me.

This is a very good concise explanation you have given as well.

I think the Earmark drawing is so outstanding especially since it is so easily for anyone to understand.

If .... you support John McCain I would suggest sending this to his campaign because it would make a really , really good ad.

Americans think Dems can get them out of any economic trouble but I think they pretty much are getting the message we need to tighten our belts and at least be more selective in our wants.

That is why this drawing would I beleive be most helpful to McCain right now.

For all the voters who pay little to no attention to politics and issues I think this WOULD get their attention.

Anyway , Well done as usual Pat. Thank you for your hard work and dilegence.

Interesting cartoon and article. They simplify an important subject. Who and how many people really have someone’s ear, and what is a politician’s attitude about our money? I know that in the total budget earmarks are not a big number or carry much weight, and yet neither is the weight of the last straw that breaks the camel's back. The problem that I have with earmarks is that politicians use our money to buy favor with their constituents. If McCain could get repeatedly re-elected without asking for earmarks, then what does that say about the others? What does that say about how politicians who ask for earmarks value our hard earned tax dollars? If politicians really care about Middle Americans then why do they waste even one of our dollars on project that does not somehow benefit the entire country?

Then weren't the Republicans lied too also?

Obama has also voted for those same Iraq spending bills since taking office.

Pat, Love the cartoon and the point you're trying to get across. The electorate is zoned out. We've been hearing campaign speeches and promises for far too long. I think just as many are tuning out as are just now tuning in!

Do lists of the earmarks exist? Do we know where they went, and who was involved? Who or what reaped the benefits of all these millions in just three years? This is what we need to get before voters in black and white and in simple form.

Why does nothing stick to the Slippery One?

that is true Perry but doesn't it BUG you that they were so friggen naive???

I'm not even in Congress and I would know not to believe them.

Plus I've not heard ONE of them admit they were STUPID to believe anything GW or Prick Cheney EVER said!!!

They just keep blaming the other guy.
NO one has taken ANY responsibility for all of this.
GW should be the one to START
Prick should be next and he should do time for shooting someone in the face (like any OTHER American would)
Gonzalez should do time
Powell should be shunned into obscurity for his fraudulent performance (to the WORLD) on wmds
I could go ON with the list but I'm sick just remembering their names

blech

oh and PELOSI needs to be replaced (good luck Casey's Mom) she is such a loon

No, earmarks are just plain undemocratic. There is a well-known budgetary process that ought to require that all $ spent by the federal government go through the same open, public, debated, etc. process re budgetary allocations.

And then there ought to be full accountability and evaluation afterward, not just ad hoc studies by the GOA whenever a specific issue gets hot or special inquiries are made.

The US government is not actually a democratic process, for those who care.

(I do. I lost faith with watergate, and this series of national elections has utterly failed to restore it.)

I thought I heard McC say that BO's earmarks averaged out to $1 million per day in the Senate -- don't know if that means per day since sworn in, or per day in actual attendance in the Senate, or per day the Senate was in session -- but however you cut it, it's a pretty big number.

Way bigger than 0.

Yes, another excellent cartoon. It would be interesting to know how many of them resulted in Michelle or the girls getting big raises or other types of repayment for the pork.
