Open Thread on House Vote * Obama Is KneeEyeball-Deep in This Housing Crisis

UPDATE at 1:44 p.m. ET: A friend tells me that House Republicans are on CNN complaining that it was Nancy Pelosi, and her highly partisan speech right before the vote, that doomed the measure. One thing is sure clear: Nancy Pelosi was unable to deliver enough Democratic votes (the Democrats had 94 nay votes). (Or was that on purpose?)

UPDATE at 1:25 pm ET: I just tried to access the House’s Web site to see how my representative voted, and it has crashed too. Not only could I not get to my own rep’s page, but the home page for the entire House is down. (I’ve been scanning news front pages — from the New York Times to CNBC. Wild times.)

UPDATE: CNN sent this breaking news report: “Dow industrials fall more than 600 on fears bailout package vote will fail.” (Fox News just reported it’s down 538.) So far the vote is trending NAY, and the Dow is clearly reflecting that!

OPEN THREAD – the HOUSE VOTE IS ABOUT TO START as I publish this . But do take note of the screenshot of an important op-ed in today’s New York Post by Stanley Kurtz, the National Review writer who accessed the Annenberg Challenge papers that revealed the extent of the relationship between Barack Obama and former Weatherman William (Bill) Ayers. (Steve Diamond’s articles tell you much more about the Annenberg story.)

kurtz.jpg

Update on Threads: I erred on the timing of NancyA’s post, and have pulled it for a short while. It’s coming back up soon. My apologies to all, especially Nancy.

Our writers Uppity Woman, Eastan McNeal, NancyA, and Larry Johnson have done great work on Obama’s connections to Acorn.

NancyA and others are working on stories that analyze Kurtz’s op-ed. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, we’ll track the voting and reactions.

That mutt just wandered into my yard and the kids started feeding it. I’m not sure at what point it became my dog.

boy do you have that right…I fell for it for more years than I care to admit.

Here is a piece to read about CBS interview.

CBS News Erases Moderate Quotes from Palin Transcript

Here are the missing pieces of the transcript:

(2:58) Couric: What, specifically, in your view, could be done to convince the new government in Pakistan to take a harder, tougher line against terrorists in that country?

Palin: At a time when new leadership comes in, that is the opportunity to forge better, tighter, more productive relationships and that’s what we’ll take advantage of with new leadership in the US and in Pakistan. And I’m sure that President Zardari, too, will agree with us as we commit to the support that Pakistan needs, that other nations in the region need, in order to win this war on terrorism. (3:32)

(5:39) Couric: But what lessons do you think you have learned as you’ve watched this unfold in terms of implementing the democracy and the challenges inherent in that goal?

Palin: Well, one is that America cannot be counted on to do this solely, to be the savior of every other nation, but we need friends and we need allies and we need this nation-building effort and we need to forge new alliances, and that is what a new election will provide opportunity to do.

Couric: What happened if the goal of democracy, Governor Palin, doesn’t produce the desired outcome, for example in Gaza, the US pushed hard for elections and Hamas won.

Palin: Especially in that region, though, we have got to protect those and support those who do seek democracy and do seek protections for the people who live there. And you know, we’re seeing today, in the last couple of days here in New York, a speaker, a President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, who would come on our soil and express such disdain for one of our closest allies and friends—Israel—and we’re hearing the evil that he speaks. And if hearing him doesn’t allow Americans to commit more solidly to protecting the friends and allies that we need, expecially there in the Mideast, then nothing will.

If Americans are not waking up to understand what it is that he represents, then nothing is going to wake us up and we will be lulled into some kind of false sense of security that perhaps Americans were a part of before 9/11.(7:25)

So, let me get this straight. The majority of low income people are minorities. They are the ones that got bad loans. Obama helped them get into this mess. And 95% of them are voting for Obama. Hmmm…

The rest of us are just going to have to make sure we do all we can to get McCain into office because these people obviously don’t know any better. Talk about being bamboozled and hoodwinked!

The Democratic party was founded on the principles of helping low income people to rise above that status. But it was based on work, education and responsibility. The Dem party no longer works on those principles. Their tactics enable poor people to stay poor and perhaps that is how they want it. People who are oppressed tend to be a little more desperate to believe anything they hear.

Obama should be utterly ashamed of himself but we all know he isn’t. He has been hanging around unsavory people his entire life. So he will just learn the good old fashioned American way when he gets taken to the woodshed starting…..ummm, that would be today!

  • Objective analysis

The Dems are trying to cover this up. The House does not need to pass this bill at all.

    PUMA 2008!

  • Paul3triple

    The race resets Oct. 1st.
I predict they start getting real tough on bam-bam.
The thing is, they want them with a false sense of confidence, kind of like after the convention. You cannot release the missiles to early or he has a shot at recovering. Like Rev. Wright. That is but an afterthought to some.(he will play a starring role in upcoming ads).
Sarah Palin will be unleashed after the debate on thursday I predict and she will take the spotlight completely away.
They want to be sure she is ready for the debate, afterwards they will let her loose and let sarah be sarah.
They have a plan. They will lambaste him so hard Obama will not be able to get up in time. There is still a huge amount of undecided voters. Those voters will break McCain just like they ALWAYS broke for clinton.

You guys lose faith to quick. If you learned anything from the primary is thould be to turn off the news and man the phones. Forget about the pundits. If we want Obama to lose it is our duty as a democratic nation to ensure his defeat by hard work and getting the truth out.
I suggest we start linking anti-obama sites at all of the popular political sites and start e-mailing your list of friends with the real deal on this clown. Also, get your boots on the ground and get out the vote.
Anyone voting for a third party should seriously rethink that. For one they 3rd party candidates will lose. We need to get McCain every vote we can get or obama will win.

I know one thing, on the 5th if the unthinkable happens i will be at my local gunshop purchasing a nice Semi-auto and alot of ammo.
But if we all work hard to defeat obama that will not be necessary, so lets get it done.

  • mcpalin hill

Do not worry about the polls because the media wants to depress the vote. But the one thing they are not taking into consideration is the enormous anger by the American people at the media and the Democrats September Surprise. Rush just said — he thinks that there will be a huge landslide for McCain because the people resent the socialist takeover by the Dems. He can’t wait until September 5th to watch the media flipping out — saying how did they get this so wrong.

  • Shiloh

If you have to wonder whether it’s a campaign ploy, it’s a campaign ploy. I disagree though, that people will be duped by the msm. There’s a lot of time between now and the election, we aren’t even a month out yet. Political scientists say that presidential elections with the fast news cycle are won and lost in the last two weeks, or even the last few days.

  • wodiej

uhmm, I don’t get it. Why are these news people who are in the tank for Obama purposely asking Governor Sarah Palin difficult questions that highlight her high intelligence while they ask dumb down questions to Obama to highlight that is all he is capable of answering? haha, They are like mutants, devouring themselves.

  • Soldier of Christ

Good- article- it is too bad that most americans are told that it is the Bush adminstration that sold them the bag of bad goods. I just wrote England- feel free to fill their email with letters: The article was pushed by the minions of Obama. I guess they are telling the English that they won already. My letter was brief and simple to them:

First, let me say with great respect that you need to change your comment:
    __________________________________________
(Taking Colorado, as Mr Obama’s team are very confident of doing, would put him over the top. Even winning the smaller state of Nevada, with its five electoral votes, would be enough to guarantee a 269-269 tie with Mr McCain. If that happens, the US constitution would hand the decision over to the Democrat dominated US House of Representatives, which would presumably come down in Mr Obama’s favor. )
    _____________________________________________________

As for the one sided story of the Presidential race, of course, Obama’s pundits will say anything to confuse England, the beautiful land that the Republicans love and the liberals wouldn’t care less about. I am not republican, but, a centrist- and I can tell you that the “grassroots of values” are very strong in America. And, they will never allow a socialist to take over our country. What you are receiving are the politics warfare misconstruing polls of the DEMON-crats that are determined to make our country be without G-d the Almighty and without values. The polls that are spread to your country concerning Obama is based on 800 to 2000 people on a daily base. These Gallup polls mostly are coming out of gallup.com, who strive in promoting Muslim books to the public. Both of the other pollster used in our country are also involved with owners that are from the middle eastern decent. American are aware of the importance of our Motherland England and how they see us, and if you keep reporting idiotic’s articles such as the one stated today without checking the facts, first, I say you too have given up your country to the vile liberals who are intended to make sure we forget who Yeshua was and died for. I would also like for you to be aware that in Nov 2004- the electro map favored Kerry over 12% with thousands of new voters and youth gathered to beat President Bush. I guess we all know who won? I voted for Kerry and didn’t realized the strength of our USA grassroots- don’t make the same mistake in your reporting. Be fair and balance. Amen. G-d bless the Queen and G-d bless America.

Anybody wants to contact this newspaper:
    telegraphenquiries@telegraph.co.uk
Please show them the unity of the grassroots.

No, the people you are talking about have been living in homes way over their heads and paying mortgages (or not paying) that wouldn’t even cover rent. They made no down payments and even if they lose the home they just walk away. Note that these are the people the democrats want to further subsidize by keeping them in those homes.

  • benny

thats wise, Paul. Make 100% sure that you do that. IF obama comes to power, all bets are off. IF that happens, be prepared for the worst, cos you never know what might happen. ofcourse, we believe it’ll be business as usual, but this guys thinking and methodology disturbs me. so IF the unthinkable happens, keep yourself armed and ready. better safe than sorry.

and when she gives a good answer they don’t air it.

What do each of these three Palin answers have in common? They portray her as a foreign policy moderate who seeks multilateral coalitions with allies and who advocates for human rights, caring about better lives for Middle Easterners.

Interestingly, ABC News also edited out the same kind of moderate, multilateralist comment in order to more effectively promote the misinformation that Palin was advocating a new, warmongering approach to Russia.

Katie Couric clearly hasn’t learned much from the previous CBS News scandal, Rathergate.

Actually, the majority of poor people in this country are white re. population demographics. -There are way more whites than nonwhites. Women alone with children as a result of choice, death, divorce often end up in poverty. The majority of women who have used programs that comprise “welfare” are white and they use them in the way intended. However, nonwhites receive the lion’s share of social benefits and a reverse discrimination has been going on for years. Can you imagine being a poor white family and complaining you have been barred from public housing? You got it. Race baiting has silenced many from speaking up. To what agency would they register their complaint ? What advocacy organization exists to help poor white people? All of you folks falling out of the white middle class need to listen up. This is a topic you haven’t had to think about. BTW whites were underrepresented in the group getting the sucker loans. I guess this one time it paid to be ignored.

No. I am happy that the bill did not pass as written. We don’t need a bill to pass before 2 p.m. because of a Jewish holiday. Please. That’s not a good reason to have to pass this bill this way because of a Jewish holiday.

Now go back to the drawing board, and gives us a bill that allows housing prices to float freely while the financial markets are shored up and assisted in any way they need it. But the housing market needs to float freely. Period.

The government cannot purchase these mortgages for a profit, and second holding them until a profit, and simply stymieing the housing market against the middle class of this country. Who owns this country? The government thinks they own it.

  • Diana L. C.

It if loses, it gives McCain a better shot at stating HIS case and bringing down O’s Pelosi’s and Dean’s gangs. I hope it gives him more of a chance to publicize who is knee deep in this corruption.

  • Linda C.

I really wish people would stop blaming those ne’er do well folks for this entire mess. There have been ads everywhere..no credit, bad credit, little or no down payment. This was advertised and pushed. The people making the original loan knew most of these folks couldn’t pay. However, it wasn’t their problem since they just sold the loan to someone else for a nice profit. Why should they care that some poor slob was going to be homeless and someone else was going to be left holding the bill. They were laughing while putting money in their pockets calling everyone else “suckers”. Wasn’t it hurry up and buy a house now while the interest rates were low, terms were easy, because if you don’t buy now…you won’t ever be able to with how the prices were going up. This was the biggest pyramid scheme going.

If you look at the rate of foreclosures in this country..we must be full of ne’er do wells. Inflation, job loss, price of utilities, loss of benefits and hour reductions, medical bills are piling up on the average American. These were people who were paying their mortgage and the economy is catching up with them. Then we have the reservists who are loosing their homes while they are fighting overseas.

  • ford

How did they come up with the 700billion???

I think there must be a pile of lies in the bill, because D’s and R’s voted this down…

the bill must be packed with unnecessary items to have gone down..Voting “no” on this had to be tough on the people who did it, and the rejection is bipartisan.

Leisa, Obama and his crowd aren’t liberals and they don’t call themselves liberals. In fact they run like crazy from the word “liberal.”

They call themselves progressives, although I like Joe Cannon’s abbreviation better. He calls ‘em progs.

In any case, Obama is no real progressive, either, and he’s got a D after his name only because he’s a Chicago politician, and the Chicago Machine is (nominally) Democrat.

Obama is in fact leaning more and more Neocon, and is backed by the same Wall Street/Big Oil boys and MSM that stole the 2000 election for Obama’s twin-by-different-parents GeeDubya Bush.

Central Banks created this Fraud when Rockefeller, JP Morgan, Rothschild and other Barrons pulled all assets out in 1929 and fraudulently created a panic by false story publications in major outlets.

Over 5,000 independent banks failed and the Central Banking System was formed, without Congressional Oversight.

It’s been a fraud for decades.

The best reality would be to see these giant monstrosities be dispersed amongst many, more manageable bank tiers that interoperate and have strict standards, in which the Congress and White House do their jobs and maintain their watchdog status.

Buuuut – statistically it is the black population that gets on welfare and stays there. The actual numbers stay much higher for blacks and overall, blacks are the perpetual welfare recipients. The most number of children born into poverty and single parent homes – 70% of black children are born into single parent households – BY CHOICE – goes to the black population.

So it’s all the white’s fault argument doesn’t hold water.

For all the Republicans out there: this is the Free Market in living color. It leads to Depressions. The same circumstances caused the last Great Depression. ANd if you think you won’t be paying taxes, think again. The people in this country who have jobs are the only source of income. The Treasury is empty. We owe China to date 500 billion dollars. Do you think your Free Market Republicans in Congress are going to pay it? Or Bush? Or Cheney? Or Chris Dodd? Or Barney Frank? Or maybe you thought Obama was going to assume the national debt.

Pelosi had said that Congress needed to pass the bill, even though it was an outgrowth of the “failed economic policies” of the last eight years.

“When was the last time someone asked you for $700 billion?” she asked. “It is a number that is staggering, but tells us only the costs of the Bush administration’s failed economic policies — policies built on budgetary recklessness, on an anything goes mentality, with no regulation, no supervision, and no discipline in the system.”

    Where is the outrage?
The fact that investors bought these bundled mortgages, and therefore assumed the risk.
They bet wrong! It’s called capitalism! Some win and some lose.
The biggest problem is that Frank and his ilk thought the dream of homeownership was not due to those who saved a 10-20% down payment over years and bought a house they could afford. But was the due of almost anyone who would knowingly take out a no-doc loan. Well guess what, if you bought more house than you could afford, I have no sympathy for you. And if you bought securitized collaterallized mortgage obligations containing a pool of high risk (i.e higher rate, more profitable loans) and they are not performing, too bad.
That is what very few people get. The bad CMOs are the ones that are causing this crisis. And they were underwritten by FNMA and FHLMC. Investors bought these loans because of the higher rate of returns. And now we’re supposed to bail these investors out?
    I say no.

The McCain campaign needs to send crew with her whenever she does an interview, and then post the video and full transcript on their website. They aren’t editing these interviews to make her look hawkish, they are trying to make her look clueless. If you only watched the Gibson and Couric interviews, it would be easy to believe that she’s an inexperienced idiot. I find that portrayal hard to believe, given her success and popularity as Governor of Alaska. She sure looked a lot different in the sit-down with Hannity. I hope that their cut and paste propaganda tactics have succeeded in lowering expectations enough that she looks like a genius compared to Joe Biden.

Every thousand dollars I had when Bush took office is now worth $690. If McCain is elected, continuing tax cuts and federal deficits will likely drop the value of the dollar even further. This becomes reality for the average citizen when his or her bank fails, or there’s no gasoline at the gas station or groceries in the grocery store even if he or she has cash in hand.

Who’s to step in and provide immediate money to break the gridlock, if not the government?

I saw on a news program that said that when Barry did his interview with O’Reilly, his camp made FOX sign a contract that agreed not to edit his answers. McCain’s camp didn’t do it with Palin for the ABC interview. You’d think they’d get a clue and start asking for the same thing with Couric. They are making her inept in these interviews. Journalism is dead.

  • 30yrdem-not any more

if it all fails money won’t be worth anything anyway.

  • Leisa

Yes, I agree that Obama is a brown Bush… I have frequently said, “Show me the Democrat!” when it comes to Obama.

The media that is trashing Palin has been called “liberal”, however. They ruin the term for me.

I prefer to say I am open minded at this point, I do not want to box myself in with any ideology. Independence is liberating and refreshing.

    wodiej,

Today on the Tom Hartman radio show a caller called in complaining how ‘racist’ this whole mortgage news reporting has become because -accoridng to the caller-people are blaming African Americans for this mess and in reality it is white people who got more of these give a way loans.

Tom Hartman agreed with the caller about the racism going on and proceeded to rattle off some statistic about what % white people took out these mortgages versus african americans-without saying where the figure was from.

I could not believe what I was hearing.

NOWHERE…NOWHERE have I seen or read any articles blaming African Americans for this mortgage mess.

Hartman-who I used to listen to all the time -supported this race baiting tactic instead of stepping in as a voice of reason.

EVERY single report that I have been exposed to lays the blame on the wheelers and dealers behind the scenes who helped to lay the groundwork for this mortgage nightmare.

Is this the new ‘race baiting’ rumor that Sen obama’s campaign will now push out to the people?

WHY DIDNT TOM HARTMAN SAY ANYTHING TO THIS CALLER?

IS THIS WHAT HE BELIEVES TOO? Why is he allowing himself to be used as a pawn?

Take a look at how ‘good’ Sen Obama has been to his contstituents back home in Chicago.

I agree wodiej. I too have no idea why so many African Americans (and others too for that matter) are supporting Sen Obama without examining his legislative record.

Learn about the real Sen Obama and what he has accomplished in Chicago

Read the article I posted above earlier on this thread regarding analysis of Sen Obama’s legislative record.

Mother Jones, “ I am Barack Obama” by Mark Winston Griffith 3/17/08

“And on the question of a federal response to subprime lending abuses and foreclosure, an issue I’ve been passionate about since my days running a financial cooperative in Bedford-Stuyvesant, I’m convinced that extensive regulation and government intervention is the only way to curb predatory lending and prevent massive foreclosures. Obama, on the other hand, relies far more on the market correcting itself. Max Fraser recently wrote in The Nation that “As he has done on domestic issues like healthcare, job creation and energy policy, Obama is staking out a position to the right of not only populist Edwards but Clinton as well” writes Griffith

Now the democrats will get to see how dirty he is and boot his a$$ out to save their own a$$e$. They have no choice but to go with Clinton as nominee since she has been out campaigning and visible all along. This way she could get rid of Barfy, she didn’t have to campaign too hard for too long against her buddy John and now they will have a month of a hard fought campaign and the best person will win fair and square.

That is my happy place for the rest of the day. Barfy is gone!

  • cynic

He’s not going to freeze military spending, of course. Nor pull out of a $10 billion a month occupation of Iraq. Nor ask the Iraqis to foot part of the bill with their own $79 billion oil revenue surplus.

He will give people earning $2.7 million a year on up yearly tax cuts averaging $269,364, while decreasing tax cuts to the middle and working classes. Maybe he can also cut corporate taxes and capital gains taxes. Hell, some republicans are proposing a temporary total removal of capital gains taxes as a response to the current crisis.

Right, and so many folks who are living in houses with mortgages fully or nearly paid (and with no intention of selling those houses) will tend to question any bailout that they perceive will help others more than themselves. Can’t argue with human nature, I suppose. It’s hard to determine which analysis makes more sense; which recommended remedy will work best; how blame and accountability can be effectievely and temporarily separated from the proposed solution, and whether that temporary separation is warranted.

The problem is Tek, the economic hard times are coming whether this Bail-Out Bill passed or not. The lie to the American voter/taxpayer was that this Bail-out (by the taxpayers) of Wall Street speculators could save us any economic downturn and keep the good times rolling. The truth was it was too late for that – greed and unethical speculative banking/lending practices had already done the system in. This Bill was an effort to keep that hard news from the American voter for just a littttlllle looonger. (after election) It’s better we all go into this election with our eyes wide open.

  • Above My Pay Grade

I agree that the “ne’er do wells” should not bear the full blame or even most of it.

However, they should not be treated as victims of this mess. Most of them, either made a profit, or lost nothing, except a house they “bought” with OPM and no downpayment of their own.

The real victims are hardworking middle class folks, particularly minorities, with good credit, steady jobs and a downpayment, who were either priced out of the housing market by the “ne’er do wells” and their junk mortgages, or who ended up paying way too much for their homes because of them.

All this sub-prime monopoly money flooding the market, raised housing costs for honest, hardworking, responsible Americans, with 80/20 30-year fixed rate mortgages. Now many of the honest, hardworking people with good credit have seen their paid-in equity (downpayment) largely, if not entirely wiped out.

well … only on paper so far. Apple will come back. I didn’t buy it at its high. AIG? Only time will tell. I didn’t buy it any where near it’s high. If it can find a buyer for some of its assets, I can recoup some of it. Thank GOD I don’t have to sell this week, but like Uppity says, it’s one of those things. I didn’t lose anything in the S&L mess and I didn’t buy a house on a stupid mortgage, so it could always be worse. There is something there … of course, there’s still tomorrow to face :)

I blame anyone profitting from this fraud.
That’s pretty much all of the b@st@rds.

    They ought to all fry.
I don’t think it’s a ploy: we really are sickeningly overleveraged and their stock is fancy tp. But it sure as f#ck is their fault. This is being rushed so Bushie can pardon all his friends on the way out the door in case they can’t get the congress to sign off on that immunity deal.

I vote for captalism, free market over socialiasm and nationalism anyday.

  • Larry James Gianakos

    Inevitably, history does repeat itself.

A government caring little if anything about the most intense issues facing America’s once vibrant middle class–to wit, unmanagable home mortgages, huge credit card debt, and a moribund health care system–and caring everything about wall street entrepreneurs facing their own deserved collapse from their own unbridled greed–is in its death throes.

The bailout was to secure Wall Street, not Main Street, and in the era of George Walker Bush, those streets do not run parallel.

Millions of Clinton voters like myself (eighteen million strong this year–officially, more than any other primary presidential candidate in United States history) have understood for some time that the Clinton White House years will likely stand as America’s last Golden Age.

Assuming that Senator Obama wins this election by default, as seems now likely (although it is surprising that a Democratic candidate can be maintaining little more than a five point national lead when America is teeter-tottering close to total collapse), is he, as his adherents have long maintained, up to the task of fixing the mess?

Like millions of my fellow Clintonites, I truly believe that the nation can only be rendered whole again if the Clintons are to return to power. Hillary Clinton’s great crowd-pleasing comment in the Los Angeles debate said it all, then, and that comment is particularly apropos now: “It took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush, and it will likely take another Clinton to clean up after the second Bush!”

My prayers are now that a President Obama swallows deeply his pride and appoints Bill and Hillary to the tasks of restoring both the nation’s economic health and its foreign policy standing. Give Hillary the position of “Economic and Health Care Czar” and appoint Bill to serve as a foreign policy secretary plenipotentiary.

Perhaps the nation still has a chance: a glimmer of hope made possible by the leaders of what is surely now America’s last Golden Age.

McCain blames Obama for bailout defeat
By POLITICO STAFF | 9/29/08 3:31 PM EDT
    Text Size:

Shortly after the bailout vote, a statement from the campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) blamed the loss on “the Democratic leadership: Senators [Barack] Obama and [Harry] Reid, Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi and others.

“Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families,” said the statement, released in the name of senior policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin.

Here is the text of the statement:

“From the minute John McCain suspended his campaign and arrived in Washington to address this crisis, he was attacked by the Democratic leadership: Senators Obama and Reid, Speaker Pelosi and others. Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families.

“Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill.

“Just before the vote, when the outcome was still in doubt, Speaker Pelosi gave a strongly worded partisan speech and poisoned the outcome.

“This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country.” — McCain-Palin senior policy adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin

Before McCain Came To Washington, Senate Democrats Called On McCain For Leadership In Economic Crisis

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): “We Need The Republican Nominee For President To Let Us Know Where He Stands And What We Should Do.” Reid: “We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.” (Sen. Harry Reid, Press Conference, Washington, D.C., 9/23/08)

ABC News: White House Has Been Told By Democrats “That There Is No Deal If McCain Doesn’t Go Along.” “A Democratic leadership source says that White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten has been told that Democratic votes will not be there if McCain votes no — that there is no deal if McCain doesn’t go along.” (George Stephanopoulos, “McCain; Holds Key To Administration’s Bailout Passage On Capitol Hill,” ABC News, 9/23/08)

Roll Call: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Told The White House That Senator John McCain Was Crucial To Any Bailout Deal. “Fearing a political backlash against Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has told the White House that it must serve up support from Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) if it hopes to ensure bipartisan backing for a massive economic bailout package by week’s end.” (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, “Reid Seeks McCain Pledge,” Roll Call, 9/24/08)

    • Roll Call: “McCain Holds The Key To … A Bipartisan Vote, According To Reid …” “McCain holds the key to such a bipartisan vote, according to Reid, because Republicans are likely to defer to his position on a bill that holds political peril. McCain on Tuesday night joined Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) in lending qualified support for the $700 billion package, but it remains unclear whether his backing is strong enough and timely enough to persuade the Congressional rank and file.” (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, “Reid Seeks McCain Pledge,” Roll Call, 9/24/08)

    • Senator Reid Told Secretary Paulson That Senator McCain Was Necessary For Any Agreement. “According to a Democratic aide familiar with the discussions, Reid told Paulson this week that ‘if McCain didn’t come out for this thing and come out for it quickly, it was going to begin bleeding Republican votes.’ Democrats ‘have a very real concern that opposition [from McCain] is going to drive away potential Republican votes,’ this aide said.” (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, “Reid Seeks McCain Pledge,” Roll Call, 9/24/08)

After John McCain Returned To Washington, Democrats Attacked Him Instead Of Accepting His Help

The Wall Street Journal: Democrats “Dismissed” McCain’s Return To Washington “As Political Gimmickry.” “Republican Sen. John McCain said he would suspend campaigning to help tackle a $700 billion bailout proposal and called on Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama to postpone their debate Friday, as the roiling U.S. financial crisis took center stage in the presidential campaign. Democrats dismissed the moves as political gimmickry …” (Laura Meckler, Elizabeth Holmes and Christopher Cooper, “Financial Crisis Upends Campaign,” The Wall Street Journal, 9/25/08)

“In Interviews After The Meeting, Obama Pointed A Finger At His Rival For The Faltering Talks…” (Michael D. Shear and Jonathan Weisman, “Debate Still In Limbo As Democrats Blame McCain For Interrupting Process,” The Washington Post, 9/26/08)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) Said It “Would Not Be Helpful” To Have McCain Return To Washington To Work On The Bailout Plan. “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in a statement that would be unlikely to go out without the Obama campaign’s approval, dismisses McCain’s suspension: ‘This is a critical time for our country. While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. … But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them.’” (Ben Smith, “Reid: McCain Return ‘Would Not Be Helpful,’” The Politico’s “Ben Smith’s Blog,” http://www.politico.com, 9/24/08)

    • Reid: “We Need Leadership; Not A Campaign Photo Op.” (Ben Smith, “Reid: McCain Return ‘Would Not Be Helpful,’” The Politico’s “Ben Smith’s Blog,” http://www.politico.com, 9/24/08)

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Said She Didn’t Want McCain’s Help With The Bailout Bill. “John McCain called Speaker Nancy Pelosi this afternoon to deliver the news as well, saying he was coming back to help with the bailout bill. Pelosi’s response: We got it covered senator. ‘We are making progress,’ Pelosi told McCain, according to a Democratic aide familiar with the conversation. ‘Thanks but no thanks, Senator McCain.’” (Martin Kady II, “McCain Also Called Pelosi,” The Politico’s “The Crypt” Blog, http://www.politico.com, 9/24/08)

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) Said The White House Meeting “Looked Like A Rescue Plan For John McCain.” “‘What this looked like to me was a rescue plan for John McCain for two hours,’ said an angry Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), who had all but declared the deal done earlier in the day. ‘To be distracted for two to three hours for political theater doesn’t help.’” (Michael D. Shear and Jonathan Weisman, “Debate Still In Limbo As Democrats Blame McCain For Interrupting Process,” The Washington Post, 9/26/08)

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Said McCain Should “Get Out Of Town.” “During a speech on the Senate floor this morning, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) urged President Bush to ‘respectfully tell Sen. McCain to get out of town. He’s not helping.’ … He added, ‘When you inject presidential politics into some of the most difficult negotiations under normal circumstances, it is fraught with difficulty. Before McCain made his announcement, we were making great progress. Now after his announcement, we are behind the 8 ball. We have to put things back together again.’” (Mark Murray, “Schumer: McCain Is ‘Not Helping,’” MSNBC’s “First Read” Blog, firstread.msnbc.msn.com, 9/26/08)

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO): “Frankly We Had A Deal Until John McCain Came To Town To Play Politics.” (MSNBC’s “MSNBC Live,” 9/26/08)

“[House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney] Frank Also Blamed McCain For Making A Dramatic Announcement To Suspend His Campaign And Return To Washington For The Talks, Saying That Threw Off The Balance Of The Negotiations.” (Alison Vekshin and James Rowley, “House Republicans Undercut Bush On Rescue, Slow Talks,” Bloomberg News, 9/26/08)

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) Said “Injecting Presidential Politics In This Critical Issue Would Not Be Helpful.” “We are making progress and injecting presidential politics in this critical issue would not be helpful to quickly producing the best proposal for the American people. Senator McCain sounds like a man in a 100 yard race who is 50 yards out, 25 yards behind and wants to suspend the race. … Senator Obama called Senator McCain this morning to ask him to join in a joint statement of principles on a response to the financial crisis. It would be helpful for Mr. McCain to follow Mr. Obama’s lead.” (Rep. Steny Hoyer, “Hoyer Statement On McCain’s Announcement To Suspend Campaign, Delay Debate,” Press Release, 9/24/08)

    • Hoyer Critcized McCain For Calling To Postpone The Debate. Hoyer: “With the election only a few weeks away, the American people deserve to hear from the presidential candidates on a variety of issues. The best forum for this type of discourse is a debate and the campaigns owe it to the American public to proceed as planned.” (Rep. Steny Hoyer, “Hoyer Statement On McCain’s Announcement To Suspend Campaign, Delay Debate,” Press Release, 9/24/08)

Speaker Pelosi’s Partisan Speech From Well Of House

Speaker Pelosi’s Partisan Speech From The Well Of The House Of Representatives Attacking Republicans Turned Off Potential Republican Votes. “Opponents said part of the reason for the opposition from Republicans was what they termed a partisan speech by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said one GOP source. ‘Pelosi’s partisan speech has caused our members to go berserk and may cost us any remaining chance to pass the bill,’ the source said. Pelosi had said that Congress needed to pass the bill, even though it was an outgrowth of the ‘failed economic policies’ of the last eight years. ‘When was the last time someone asked you for $700 billion?’ she asked. ‘It is a number that is staggering, but tells us only the costs of the Bush administration’s failed economic policies — policies built on budgetary recklessness, on an anything goes mentality, with no regulation, no supervision, and no discipline in the system.’” (“House Defeats Wall Street Bailout Bill,” FoxNews.com, 9/29/08)

When John McCain Returned To Washington, There Was No Deal In Place

Fox News’ Carl Cameron Said “There Wasn’t A Deal” When John McCain Arrived. Fox News’ Jon Scott: “Give us your assessment of the statement that Harry Reid made a little bit earlier during that news conference. He didn’t use John McCain’s name, but he said things were proceeding along ‘swimmingly,’ essentially. And then he said a certain person came to Washington and then wheels fell off. Is that an accurate description of what happened?” Fox News’ Carl Cameron: “No. There wasn’t a deal. You first have to accept a predicate that there was an arrangement agreed to by all the necessary lawmakers and authorities — that was essentially a piece of paper and a proposal that had been discussed and agreed to buy one senate committee — that’s not the same as a deal. A deal in budget parlance and bailout parlance requires the White House, the regulators, the House and Senate Republicans and Democrats. And because House Republicans were not given an adequate seat at the table, Republicans had great misgivings about this — the American people have great misgivings about this — I mean 60% and more in many polls say that the public just doesn’t like this.” (Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” 9/26/08)

    • Cameron: “So McCain’s role in this was to bring about progress for a deal, which as of this hour has not yet existed. They are getting closer, they say, but because there was a commerce committee deal does not constitute finality, that was McCain’s point — and he has been making it since Monday. And Harry Reid saying that we shouldn’t inject Presidential politics into this and then immediately turning to John McCain raises some questions.” (Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” 9/26/08)

    • Click Here To Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpThx-tZPGc

Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT): “There never was a deal yesterday. That was a big lie. There was kind of a framework that a few people agreed on, but you make a deal by the negotiations that Senator McCain helped bring about which are happening right now.” (MSNBC’s “News Live,” 9/26/08)

The dropping value of the dollar has affected me. The fact that I get only slightly over 2% annual interest on money I’ve loaned to my bank affects me. The specter of bank failure costs me peace of mind, when I’m fully aware of how much the FDIC insurance fund actually has at its disposal. I also worry about my mother, who depends on money my father carefully invested. Even with very safe investments, she’s lost a bundle this year. I think no matter how careful and responsible we’ve been, we’re all at risk. Having something simply means you have something more to lose.

I’m socially liberal but financially conservative. It’s a weird situation. Neither republicans nor democrats are truly financially conservative these day, no matter what they claim. We probably need a third party, with a platform based on fiscal common sense. I’m not sure there would be enough people left with common sense to get them elected, however.

People with that sort of income already control around 71% of the total wealth of the nation. Why aren’t they investing some of that?

The point being, it’s the consumption of working and middle class people that actually drives the economy. They earn the money and buy the stuff and produce the goods and services that keep the wheels of the economy turning. The wealthy go along for the ride. If you want a health economy, you need a financially healthy working and middle class.

You’re right, while Bush was busy getting rid of Clinton’s surplus Soertoro/Obama was swimming in the Rezko – Ayers political pool and that doesn’t make his hands any cleaner than Bush’s.

As for Senator Clinton, she gave a very good plan when she spoke before the Senate about a week before it all hit the fan; however, media was too busy chasing Soertoro/Obama’s campaign to handle little mundane stuff like an economic meltdown. Why isn’t she out there? Because Soertoro/Obama waved his hand and the Democratic party banished her.

I found a great article regarding ACORN.

    http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/opinion/s_590330.html ROOTS OF ROTTEN MORTGAGES

The roots of today’s mortgage-based financial crisis can be traced back to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), which Jimmy Carter signed in 1977. Seeking to address complaints from anti-poverty activists and housing advocates about banks allegedly discriminating against minority borrowers and “redlining” inner-city neighborhoods, the CRA decreed that banks had “an affirmative obligation” to meet the credit needs of victims of discrimination in borrowing.

To add a government stick to the process, the CRA decreed that federal banking regulators would consider how well banks were doing in meeting the goal of more multiculturalism in loaning when considering requests by banks to open new branches or to merge.

A good “CRA rating” was earned by way of increasing loans in poor neighborhoods. Conversely, lenders with low ratings could be fined.

The Fed, for instance, warned banks that failure to comply with government guidelines regarding the delivery of “equal credit” could subject them to “civil liability for actual or punitive damages in individual or class actions, with liability for punitive damages being as much as $10,000 in individual actions and the lesser of $500,000 or 1 percent of the creditor’s net worth in class actions.”

However well-intentioned in terms of delivering “economic justice,” this push for more government-directed social engineering produced a widespread weakening of long-established industry standards for credit worthiness.

Led by Congressional Democrats, this policy of replacing private and decentralized decision-making with a system of centrally-delivered rewards and punishments was basically a one-party effort. Republicans, it seems, were more aware of the unintended consequences that flow from government interference in the market.

As Investor’s Business Daily recently put it, succinctly and correctly: “Over the past 30 years, Democrats, along with a handful of Republicans, have demonized lenders as racist and passed regulation after regulation pressuring them to make more loans to unqualified borrowers in the name of diversity.”

The march toward the eventual financial meltdown picked up speed during the Clinton administration via an increased lowering of loan standards in order to expand minority borrowing.

The result was widely praised. “It’s one of the hidden success stories of the Clinton era,” wrote Ronald Brownstein in May 1999 in the Los Angeles Times. “In the great housing boom of the 1990s, black and Latino homeownership has surged to the highest level ever recorded. The number of African-Americans owning their own homes is now increasing nearly three times as fast as the number of whites; the number of Latino homeowners is growing nearly five times as fast as that of whites.”

In 2000, Howard Husock reported in City Journal that the “Clinton Treasury Department’s 1995 regulations made getting a satisfactory CRA rating much harder. There would be no more A’s for effort. Only results — specific loans, specific levels of service — would count.”

The “specific levels of service” referred to how well banks were responding to complaints, including complaints from advocacy groups that were in the business of complaining.

“By intervening — even just threatening to intervene — in the CRA review process, left-wing nonprofit groups have been able to gain control over eye-popping pools of bank capital, which they in turn parcel out to individual low-income mortgage seekers,” reported Husock. “A radical group called ACORN Housing has a $760 million commitment from The Bank of New York.”

In addition to setting the stage for giving money for mortgage payouts to ACORN and other lending amateurs, CRA authorized those organizations to collect fees from the banks for their “marketing” of loans.

“The Senate Banking Committee has estimated that, as a result of CRA, $9.5 billion so far has gone to pay for services and salaries of the nonprofit groups involved,” reported Husock.

There’s big money, in short, in “nonprofit” activism — and upward mobility. A guy carries a sign advocating “Change” in front of a bank and the government turns him into a salaried protester, credit analyst and dispenser of mortgage money.

“The changes came as radical ‘housing rights’ groups led by ACORN lobbied for such loans,” reports Investor’s Business Daily, regarding the Clinton era. “ACORN at the time was represented by a young public-interest lawyer in Chicago by the name of Barack Obama.”

via Corrente – Kucinich on Obama and the absence of foreclosure remedies in today’s bill:

“AMY GOODMAN: Congressman Kucinich, can you explain how it is that the Democrats are in charge, yet the Democrats back down on their demand to give bankruptcy judges authority to alter the terms of mortgages for homeowners facing foreclosure, that Democrats also failed in their attempt to steer a portion of any government profits from the package to affordable housing programs?

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: Well, I mean, those are two of the most glaring deficiencies in this bill. And I would maintain there was never any intention to—you know, well, many members of Congress had the intention of helping people who were in foreclosure. You know, this—Wall Street doesn’t want to do that. Wall Street wants to grab whatever change they can and equity that’s left in these properties. So—

AMY GOODMAN: Right, but the Democrats are in charge of this.

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: Right. You know, I’ll tell you something that we were told in our caucus. We were told that our presidential candidate, when the negotiations started at the White House, said that he didn’t want this in this bill. Now, that’s what we were told.

AMY GOODMAN: You were told that Barack Obama did not want this in the bill?

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: That he didn’t want the bankruptcy provisions in the bill. Now, you know, that’s what we were told. And I don’t understand why he would say that, if he did say that. And I think that there is a—the fact that we didn’t put bankruptcy provisions in, that actually we removed any hope for judges to do any loan modifications or any forbearance. There’s no moratorium on mortgage foreclosures in here. So, who’s getting—who’s really getting helped by this bill? This is a bailout, pure and simple, of Wall Street interests who have been involved in speculation. ”

Yes, and Couric asked the questions. If she felt her journalistic integrity was being undermined with bias she had the same two choices we all have; speak up or keep silent. The fact that we haven’t heard her speaking against the interview censorship says where she stands. And she has financial security so the sacrifice for principles would be relatively painless.

Susan IMHO this whole thing is being played by Pelosi, Reid, and Obama. No way are they going to allow Hillary’s HLOC to be included in any discussions; it might distract from Obama as leader of the democratic party. As for your comment about saw it coming and doing nothing, you are somewhat correct in that they all saw it coming, however, you are incorrect that no one did anything: (1) in 2005 or 2006 Sen. McCain put forth or co-sponsored a bill asking for more regulation of Freddie and Fannie (where were all the democrats who this coming in regard to that bill?), and (2) there is a report out that Pres. Bush has asked for more oversight of Freddie and Fannie some, I believe, 17 times since Jan. 1, 2008. Again where were all those democrats, who are the majority in both houses, in responding to those requests? Don’t know as I could be considered as having Hillary as my hero, but as a registered republican who has certainly not been enthralled with the Bush years, I did think she was the best presidential candidate running this year. So now with a choice between experienced and nonexperienced, competent and incompetent, and a known entity and an unknown entity, I will have to go with the experenced, competent, and known entity of Sen. McCain. Again not one of my heroes, but I do know he has and will work across party lines and that he will always put our country first.

IF Pelosi REALLY wanted the bill to pass, and IF this bill was as important and necessary as she claimed, and if this was REALLY a crisis, she had enough votes with the Democrats alone to pass it. If Americans end of being hurt by this she then has to explain why – when she had the number needed to pass – she did not do it. I guess there is just no more party discipline.

I guess she can only enforce party discipline only when it comes to getting Obama the nomination.

I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, and I dont think we share many ideas.

Right now your cash position is strong, the times should favor you unless you allow the windbags in congress to stick you with the bill.

If you want a better return on your investments, you will need to assume more risk. Banks arent going to give you a big return to have your deposit sit in a checking account.

Higher cap gains taxes make investing less attractive. Investment fuels business, and business is what generates cash on which the world runs. You know, that stuff in your wallet that you feel is shrinking at 31% annually due to, I guess, inflation? Or did you mean vs the Euro or Canadian Dollar? Or is it taxation? I am just not sure.

I am sorry you are unhappy about the situation, nobody really is, but your arguments dont make sense.

We would probably return to a barter system. The last time it was in use (1980s I think) it worked well until the IRS got involved. But with people receiving no income from jobs there would be a demand for trading services. I’m still working on this screenplay. I’m pouring buckets of sweat into it before I find that life imitates art once again.

    Act one
The roosting Reagan chickens doo-doo all over the white stone of our nations capital. Our great leader, this time not distracted by My Pet Goat, conceives of a reenactment of his greatest triumph, the Hijacking of the 9/11 Tragedy. Accordingly he sends his two greatest financial wizards of the federal government to in to scare the bejeasus out of the lawmakers and panic them like a flock of quail pursued by Ole’ Shep.

The sky is falling!!! An accommodating Congress starts the rubber-stamp process but pauses when the will of the people starts expressing itself in a blizzard of withering emails, telephone calls and telegram. Screw the chickenshit, they say, something else is rotten in Denmark. This scene ends with our fearless leader pacing the parapets of the castle in fear of the forest moving in on him: He is hated amongst his fellow man, treated as a cipher by Congress and is going to bequeath his legacy to a Negro. Mother will not be pleased by that last part, no, no, no, not pleased at all.

    Act two
In the early light of dawn the plot is hatched. Loyal McCain and the loyal Republican yeomen (trans. ex-Delay yes-men) will trod the boards in an effort to stem Birnam wood from engulfing stately Dunsinane. The good cop – bad cop stick is chosen so first the yeoman must stage an uprising against the great leader upon which Dudley McCain will ride in and doright by quelling the rebellion and bringing the wayward yeoman back into the fold.
Scenes two and three involve fabricating the trajectory of the plot and characters following a riff on the classic motif of boy meets girl; boy loses girl; boy wins girl. Thusly the great leader doth address the clueless masses that disaster is indeed at hand (it’s a wonder the idiot didn’t spark a run on the banks) and Loyal McCain charges the yeomen only to be driven back. “Once more into the breach dear firends, once more or close the wall up with our Republican dead…………..stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood”. , twice into the breach, “half a league half a league, half a league onward….……..

Act three (a work in progress)
Loyal McCain, thrown from his stallion and faced with a forest of pikes at his throat, warbles gallant and patriotic platitudes to divert the otherwise loyal yeomen from their dastardly ways. The silver-tongued McCain sways the reluctant yeomen to rally to the great leader once again. There is not a dry eye in the house. CNN and FOX run graphics of McCain staring off into the sunset in a pose suitable for MT. Rushmore.

    The fix is in.

Well, as Pelosi and other Dem’s were pushing the bailout bill, of course, they preferred the first one that redicted money to ACORN and no doubt anothe reason they wanted McCain to just sign off on it and not come in to DC and stop the taking advantage for their friends they were doing against the tax payers, but that got stopped, so they settled for this. To fill in the blanks later and sstill protect their buddies with their big pay and bonuses.

Thankfully enough said NO WAY, NO HOW, No BAILOUT Pelosi and Reid!

This is what my Congressman Udall just sent out. He is a Democrat, of course, so he tried to be kind for Dem’s, but when you read what Nancy, Frank, Dodd, and Reid were pushing, I just want to vote them all out.

    “Madam Speaker,

For eight years, the Bush Administration and its allies in Congress have allowed Wall Street to gamble with America’s economy, and the results have been devastating for Main Street. The Administration consistently ignored the experts and failed to adequately oversee America’s financial markets. Administration officials were warned that Wall Street’s risky investments, combined with the mortgage industry’s irresponsible practices, could produce a perfect storm that would threaten Americans’ homes, jobs and life savings. Yet they did nothing.

When Wall Street’s dangerous behavior began to undermine America’s economy, the Bush Administration proposed a bailout that would have given the Treasury unprecedented power to spend taxpayer money without adequate oversight or an actual plan for fixing the systemic problems that led America to this crisis. At the time, I spoke out against the Bush bailout and called for a better proposal, one that would protect taxpayers, help homeowners and benefit Main Street, not just Wall Street. More importantly, I demanded that any plan to shore up America’s financial markets include reasonable rules to ensure that Wall Street does not continue to gamble with our future.

We could have, and we should have, taken the time to do this right. Four hundred of the country’s top economists, including three Nobel laureates, asked Congress to take more time to improve this proposal. With a plan this far-reaching and complex, we had a responsibility to produce the best possible piece of legislation. The bill we are voting on today falls short. Instead of reforming Wall Street, we are using taxpayer dollars to insulate financial firms from the consequences of their own actions. The American taxpayer is on the hook for $700 billion to cover Wall Street’s mistakes, and that is not right. Even worse, Wall Street is not being forced to change its behavior. This can only encourage more irresponsibility.

At the same time, the provisions that limit executive compensation in this bill are weak, meaning that corporate executives who ran their companies into the ground could still walk away with millions in taxpayer-funded compensation in the forms of golden parachutes or other lavish benefits packages. Again, this sends exactly the wrong message to Wall Street. This legislation may still use taxpayer dollars to reward executives who have failed their companies and subsequently hurt the American economy.

In addition, at a time when America’s middle class is severely stretched to make ends meet, this $700 billion bailout not only seeks to rescue our own financial institutions, it also spends our taxpayer dollars to bail out foreign companies. We must protect American taxpayers before we seek to rescue foreign companies while their governments do nothing.

Finally, this legislation does too little to help responsible homeowners. As a result, tens of thousands of families could lose their homes. More importantly, families who had nothing to do with failed mortgages could lose billions in assets as foreclosures continue to drive down property values.

I believe strongly that Washington must act to protect Main Street from the crisis on Wall Street. I supported an economic stimulus plan that puts working families before corporate CEOs by creating jobs, protecting children’s access to healthcare and ensuring that struggling families do not go hungry. I have consistently supported strong action to protect middle class New Mexicans. But I could not vote to give Wall Street $700 billion of taxpayer money without solving the underlying problems with our economy.

I will continue working with my colleagues to reform America’s financial markets, so Wall Street is not allowed to make the same mistakes over and over again. I will also continue fighting to support middle class New Mexico families that find themselves struggling in an economy devastated by the irresponsible acts of others. They are the true victims of the Bush Administration’s malign neglect of our economy. We must do what’s right for them.

    Thank you, Madam Speaker.”

A great day for America. 228 Congressmen actually listened to their constituents rather than their so-called leaders (the engineers of their gravy trains would be more accurate).

I’m a homeowner and have a very successful business. Stupid – well – spending my time arguing with you might be evidence for that, I’ll admit.

I’m one of those ‘ideologues’ you’ve heard about. See, I’d rather lose everything and start all over than have the government spend one penny of taxpayer money on a bailout. Your REALLY are stupid…you are a homeowner? guess what, it could very well happen that your home is worthless or taken away from you. You have a business? All your own capital or need loans from banks? What would happen if that dries up?

We need to send this plan to our Congressmen that I received from a friend today and tell them this is a plan we can approve:

    T. J . Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic

This idea sounds just crazy enough to possibly work, so naturally it won’t be given serious consideration. How great is our bureaucracy!!

    Hi Pals,

I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free.

So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.

That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in thei r pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads

Put away money for college – it’ll be there

Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car – create jobs

Invest in the market – capital drives growth

Pay for your parent’s medical insurance – health care improves

Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean – or else

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!

As for AIG – liquidate it. Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t.

Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.”

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom?

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion

We Deserve It Dividend more than do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC

And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh…I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

    Kindest personal regards,

    Birk

    T. J . Birkenme ier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic

PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it’s either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!!

  • http://noquarters foxyladi14

agreed you do not give an alcoholic a drink;you do not loan money to someone that cannot pay you back
its just plain old common sense..

  • Don’t Panic

    Yes, but…

Whose money was the Bush administration spending when it doubled the national debt to almost 10 trillion dollars over a mere 8 years?

If we had used the same $558 billion we have thusfar spent on the invasion and occupation of Iraq to replace imported oil with alternative energy instead, how much stronger and how much more prosperous would our nation be today?

Instead we’ve squandered the money, set ourselves up to spend trillions more on imported oil, and funded our enemies in the process.

Imported oil currently sucks $700 billion per year directly out of the U.S. economy. Add to that the indirect cost of military spending required to protect our foreign suppliers.

I’d gladly spend our tax dollars to fix that, because the payoff would be both enormous and permanent.

Yep, they’re saying percentage wise, it only ranks fifth.

    *thinking*

Was money that can vanished in the blink of an eye actually something real to begin with?

Maybe the drop is a measure of how much real wealth has been stolen and replaced with faery gold…

“I’m a homeowner and have a very successful business.”

I do so admire your head for business.

We have a bridge out here for sale. We just gave it a fresh coat of orange paint. People love it so much that they pay you six bucks just to drive across.

Our representatives from Nigeria will be in touch with you to close the sale.

    SHE IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS.

    “Useless” is actually too kind.

Blaming everything on Bush, is like so, oh, 2006! They were voted in to do something, it’s been two years, and all they’re doing is BLAMING BUSH. I’d ground my kids for life if they’d done anything like this!

Anyone who seriously believes that putting our country into further debt can somehow save us, is the one with his/her head in the sand. Go read a history book and save the sarcasm for people who are intimidated by it.

    Susan

Why don’t you quite blowing bubbles, sweetie?!
HIllary was the first over the moronic display of limp-macho-misogynists running against her, to propose her wise SOLUTIONS for this mess. Incidentally, Susan dearie, if you bothered reading Hillary’s proposal re Home Onwership Loan Corporation a year ago and then read last Thursday’s WASHINGPOST where no less an economist guru than dear Kenneth GALBRAITH, you’ll see that GALBRAITH IN FACT AGREES WITH HILLARY’S CONCEPT OF THE HOLCorp!

So snap out of your dumb typical OBAMYOPIA, sweets that lead you to your current Hillary-hatred dyspespia–and go back to Chicago’s political sewers where your Empty Suit got his training from REzko and Emil Jones, Ayres and hte rest of the thugs….and go talk to Sen. ALICE PALMER for references. That was his mentor, poo poo, and she was an AA (like you) and Bobo Hussein STOLE her election like he did steal the nomination from HIllary!

Then, honeypoop, go watch your beloved moron’s starring role in this youtube mega-hit:

‘OBAMA GIVES HILLARY THE FINGER” — Where your marvelously juvenile, dumber-than-Bush candidate and Odinga’s couz flip-offs, and dusts her off and scrapes her off….
Hell…it’ll make your miserable day, poopie!

    That was not sarcasm.

I am mocking you, True Believer.

You know, I was encouraged to buy a house myself. I was told it would be easy, no money down and mortgage assured although my credit wasn’t great.I didn’t go for it. Why? I knew I couldn’t afford it. I couldn’t maintain it.Many people I know did it. They thought their homes were going to be ATM machines and bragged as houses on their block sold for more and more. They bought bigger and more homes and condos. They bought new cars. They stood in line for $600 I-phones. It was obvious that this couldn’t last and the people were counting on wealth that was on paper only. Do we really want to bail out these people too? Not me, sorry. If you bought a home within your means and didn’t run up big credit card debt because you planned to sell your house one day at an enormous profit, you deserve any help that the gov’t can provide, otherwise, you are getting what you deserve. Money does not grow on trees. Its alkways been upside down to me that fatcats who sit behind a desk make alot more money than those who sweat and work hard for a living.

Hey Genius, $85 Billion distributed to 200 million workers is $425.00 each, not $425,000 each.

Are you using the same calculator Obama uses for his tax and spend plans?

Barack Hussein Obama could not be in Washington because no telepromters were there
