T.R. was a true progressive, holding to the philosophy was that while aggressive capitalism is basically a positive system, completely unbridled capitalism will eventually destroy the positive results of the free economy in the society it supports. The checks and balances of a progressive system prevent that, just as they prevent social interference from denaturing the positive results of capitalism and overruling the sovereign rights of the individual. Our federalist system is just such a progressive system—not a perfect one, but it works. It’s futile to debate the differences between fascism and socialism because, regardless of the intent of those who promulgate these systems, they are two sides of the same centralist coin. I’ve heard it said that the Nazis were fascists who went so far to the right that they ended up on the left, while Soviets were socialists who went so far to the left that they ended up on the right—and vice-versa, left and right. The truth is that the leaders of such movements were centralists who first subjugated the people and the economy to the state, then became the state themselves. Such states always devolve into totalitarian forms, dictatorships or oligarchies in which, “some animals are more equal that other animals.” This is known as “statism,” and it is neither progressive nor fair. It doesn’t matter whether the modern “progressives” are, at base, good-intentioned but deluded in their thinking, or actually fascist or socialist—the end result of any form of centralism is always the same. It’s all about the control of the many by the few.
