Open Thread * Senate Debate

The U.S. Senate is debating the measure to be voted upon tonight. Watch C-Span2 or listen/watch online. I just checked C-Span1, which was airing an earlier press conference with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. (OPEN THREAD)

TO ALL FAITHFUL NQ’ers, WHENEVER YOU SEE A NEW POST AND YOU GET THERE FIRST, PLEASE POST THE MESSAGE ABOVE. ITS MOST EFFECTIVE WHEN ITS THE FIRST POST. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS OUR GREAT COUNTRY.

      • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

This is really unnecessary, distracting, and redundant. If you really have something to say, why don’t you say, substantiate it. Throwing out a “Boycott this… or that” is like signing a petition, a general waste of time. Posting twise, is spam.

Anyway, if you start down the road of boycotting, where do you start or stop. I suspect that based on your apparent concerns you’d end up boycotting everything, including Mom, Apple Pie, and the American flag.

        • tillthen

You just don’t get it, you pompous poster. What happened when Blacks boycoitted? They got a lot of attention and changes. What is your problem? Are you a slow reader? If my posts bother you then why can’t you just scroll over them. Something inherent is wrong here. Are you a troll, a poseur? Take note of the people below who responded positively to my boycott posts.

I get it, You’re too lofty for this sort of thing. ..but you do have me wondering about where this boycotting could lead…a slippery slope indeed. Get fucking real.

          • Aleph

I agree that boycotting is a good idea. In fact the bottom line is always money. I have stopped watching almost every channel except PBS and if O-blahma wins I am turning the cable off altogether.

            • karen for Clinton – 2012

PBS has to go too. Read about Gwen Ifill the unbiased koolaid drinker moderator they chose to interrogate Palin and prop up pillows for Biden.

Tonight the pressure is on the moderator AND the candidates. Also see who funds PBS and why they are in the tank for ob.

The country is uninformed and that is entirely the mass mainstream media fault.

Let the good times roll, we are bringing in the FBI to ensure the heads will roll.—Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)

Too bad this is likely more words than action.

    • http://www.theindependentview.com Matthew Weaver

Show much for Mikulski’s high talk, she was followed by Mr. Corruption himself, Sen. Chris Dodd.

      Pathetic.

I’m saving my energies for tomorrow nights debate.

I can’t take the Senate bloviating (sp) today.
It was a LONG weekend with those fools. Everyone keeps waiting for the END!

Didn’t they say it would all come crashing down by Monday?

Maybe we’re all just ghosts and don’t know it. (snide chuckle)

bygones – have fun! (NOT) ;-)

    be back after the show

ps. Obama you lost a vote today. My daughter was too lazy to get her voter I.D. switched from FLA to NC and when I found the card and asked her she said, “I’m not gonna vote, it’s too late anyway”

HA! Some commitment huh? She never really was a fan just wanted to support Democratic Principals. (which have gone out the door)

I always said MOST people need a REASON to vote FOR someone not against someone. (of all those I know)

    non politician types

Bambi is no longer the SAVIOR so apparently NOT worth voting FOR any longer! YAY!

Now I hope Sarah does a SPLENDID job tomorrow so I have a reason to vote FOR them as well as a reason to vote AGAINST Bambi

    excellent

    • Judy L. NC

      LOL!

    • csuzeq

I am getting frustrated by the polls and the voter fraud, but then when I really stop and think about it, Barky just cannot win. No matter what. Even with this crisis, no one I know will go to Barfy over McCain. The few I knew who were voting for Barfy anyway, still will. I just can’t see how it helps Barky really. I would think it would be the opposite. When we are afraid, we won’t take more risk, right? Are there really nincumpoops who will say Oh, the economy is in the toilet, let’s go with the new guy? Let’s go with the guy who is not gonna raise my taxes (or so the lie goes)when he needs to somehow come up with this 700 Billion dollars? I just don’t believe that. I have more faith in Americans than that. Aren’t most Americans smarter than that?

Ok, so question. Let’s reenforce truth here. Can anyone tell me one person they know who is going with Obama because of the crisis?

Me=0 votes for Barfy added to the 3 I know
me and my circle=48 votes McCain

  • tillthen

Sorry if I offended the Weaver, but isn’t one of the objectives to shake the MSM up and hurt them where it hurts most. Take note, I haven’t posted twise, I have posted more than thrise, and by the way fuck you. I will keep posting this and maybe something will happen… and fuck you again.

    • OhioMary

Tillthen – I try not to purchase anything GE now either since I have learned they own MSNBC (or MSNBO) and provided products to IRAN.

      • tillthen

Thank you so much, OhioMary!! Now if you can foil those ‘bots in Ohio who are canvassing votes illegally, you hero status will be enormous.

        • Diana

For Christmas I am getting a new Washer and Dryer, Refrigerator and a Dishwasher. The ones I’ve had, I’ve had for years and I want new ones. I will avoid all GE products.

          • tillthen

            Thank you, Diana.

  • wac for hillary

I called my Senators today to let them know I didn’t support the $700B giveaway and that they should look at Rep. DeFazio’s No Bailouts Act. The people answering the phones sounded a touch weary. I sincerely hope people were giving them an earful, and I hope the message was being relayed to the Senators–not that it will do any good with my spineless weasels.

    • typewriterstreaming

The No Bailout Bill seemed outstanding. This is sickeing. No hearings, no nothing. Was this new version of the bill posted somewhere, cause I can’t find it. thanks.

  • ford

I am supporting the boycott of GE…

by the way I’ve never driven into an EXXon since the Valdez accident in Alaska..

it is my personal belief that women can hold a grudge much longer than men..what say you??

    I can hold a grudge..and I will.

The NEW Demokratic Party is not mine.

BO will never get my vote and I do talk up all his terrible policy with people who ask.

I do not however, get in people’s faces..if they ask me I give them a little straight talk., and then I always end with google it, and decide for yourself.

BO is a horrid choice for this country.

I am rooting for Palin tomorrow , but I do feel the McCain Camp let her down not vetting the Ifill Bias…bad .

The Mac Camp needs to clean up their act.

Just because you have the Whitey Tape doesn’t mean BO can’t win…

    • tillthen

Thank you so much Ford for supporting the boycott.

    • Kara

I promise you this Gwen Awful thing is NOT A SURPRISE to anyone – especially the McCain people. They’ve set Awful up and it’s working beautifully in the McCain campaign’s favor. REALLY.

  • MessyMarcy

it is my personal belief that women can hold a grudge much longer than men..what say you??

Damn straight, we can, Ford! And I make most of the purchasing decisions in our household. I’m still so pissed over the Anita Hill thing I do not buy Purina petfood because of Danforth’s connection to the company. And I can’t wait to vote against Joe Biden partly because of his cowardly, spineless performance in that farce. And neither do I buy Exxon and will not buy GE stuff in the future.

I have come to the conclusion that they are using the news outlets as a sort of loss-leader propaganda department. They’re willing to lose a few viewers in order to still get the lies and crap out to the ones who are still believing them. That just leaves our vote at the election and our votes at the cash register to get their attention. When and where will it end? When they stop trying to shove people like Obama and Bush down our throats.

  • Urban Hillbilly

Since this is an open thread, a few thoughts on Sarah Palin.

Palin got knocked off balance. She can fight back. Fair minded Americans will forgive her, because they can imagine how tough it is to be thrown into a “spotlight” of that magnitude. Americans are generous in spirit and are forgiving.

“Howard Wolfson would have Hillary on the cover of Cat Fancy”
–is one of the most memorable quotes, I remember from the democratic primaries. Other Clinton strategists opposed his idea, thus limiting Hillary’s exposure, when, in the end, her personality won people over in droves.

Wolfson’s strategy should be applied to Palin immediately. McCain strategists should have her lined up every day to talk to radio talk show personalities, Greta Van Susteran, etc.

THERE SHOULD NOT BE A DAY GO BY THAT I DO NOT HEAR SARAH PALIN’S VOICE!

She connects with people which helps that ticket. Once that happens with the electorate, the left wing derision will be meaningless and just plain mean spirited.

  • Lindsy

THe MSM will never put anything positive about Gov. Palin out there. If you hear her voice at all over the next 34 days (outside the debate) it will be gaffes or negatively spun.

Secondly, McCain has just lost this election by supporting this bailout. It’s ridden with earmarks- the Dems will use this against him.

    • Diana

They’re all supporting it. Obama, Clinton, Biden, and McCain. Palin will be the only one with clean hands. She can pull an Obama and say at a time when it was political risky I did not support the bailout. Back in 2008 I stood my ground against it. ;)

      • MessyMarcy

Way to find that silver lining! This has not affected my decision to vote McCain/Palin, but I am disappointed. If ever we needed some fiscally responsible leadership, it is now; and in my opinion Big John didn’t come through.

    • canucklehead

sarah’s choking having to defend Mr. Reach-across-the-aisle, I’m just pretending to be a republican ‘cuz the Democrats didn’t want me McCain.

  • beebop

How far up Chris Dodd’s ass is Jack Reed?

Can’t buy a car? Sorry. Drive the old one. I do. GM feeling the pinch? Design cars that people want to buy. They do it at Toyota. Sorry.

Can’t buy a house? Sorry. Live where you currently are. I do.

What is happening now is not the fault of Bush alone. Please. CHRIS DODD knew and let it happen. Excessive compensation for people who do their jobs is one thing. Using Welfare as income on a mortgage application, something else all together.

And. He brings up HEALTH CARE? What happened to its a “non-starter?”

    Jack Reed is a moron.

Gwen Ifill taking a page from Obama~Shame on all us racists saying she is in the tank for Obama. If she were white writing a book about a white politician you wouldn’t assume that. ;)

(I most certainly would too Gwen, unless I heard them publicly speaking negatively about that politician. The only one you reacted negative too is Sarah.)

    VP debate moderator’s impartiality questioned
    Oct 1, 5:12 PM (ET)
    By DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK (AP) – PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, moderator of the upcoming vice presidential debate, dismissed conservative questions about her impartiality because she is writing a book that includes material on Barack Obama.

Ifill said Wednesday that she hasn’t even written her chapter on Obama for the book “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama,” which is to be published by Doubleday on Jan. 20, 2009, the day a new president is inaugurated.

“I’ve got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I’m not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation,” Ifill said. “The proof is in the pudding. They can watch the debate tomorrow night and make their own decisions about whether or not I’ve done my job.”

The day before the Joe Biden-Sarah Palin debate, columnist Michelle Malkin wrote in the New York Post about Ifill’s book, saying “she’s so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.”

In its online description of the book, Doubleday says that Ifill “surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.”

The McCain campaign found out about Ifill’s book in the last day or so, a spokesman said.

Ifill said Obama’s story, which she has yet to write, is only a small part of the book, which discusses how politics in the black community have changed since the civil rights era. Among those subjects is Colin Powell, secretary of state in the Bush administration.

The host of PBS’”Washington Week” and senior correspondent on “The NewsHour” said she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about the book. The commission had no immediate comment when contacted by The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for John McCain’s campaign did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages.

Ifill’s resume includes jobs at The New York Times, the Washington Post and NBC News. She moderated the 2004 vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards.

She said it was the publisher, not herself, who set the Inauguration Day release date. It will be released then whether Obama wins or loses.

Although Malkin raised the topic of Ifill’s impartiality the day before the debate, the PBS journalist said that Time magazine noted she was writing a book in August, and that it has been available for pre-sale on Amazon.com. The book also is mentioned in a Sept. 4 interview she gave the Washington Post.

Ifill questions why people assume that her book will be favorable toward Obama.

“Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?” said Ifill, who is black. Asked if there were racial motives at play, she said, “I don’t know what it is. I find it curious.”

  • Soundtrack for the Drama Taking Place in the Senate and Media

All day the media and now Senators are telling us to get over it. They are characterizing our opposition to the bailout as petty anger, and get on board to support the bailout because not doing so will hurt all of us, Wall Street and Main Street. It was like everyone in the Senate had channeled Bono.

The predictions of apocalyptic doom continued. They acknowledge greed and government failures helped produce this crisis, but promise that more money and more government will solve it…they think.

  • galsforhill

    talk about pork-
they just added another 150 billion to the senate bill.

    • Lou Filliger

The most amazing (and offensive) comment I heard was Senator Feinstein, who stated that of the 91,000 e-mails and phone calls her office received this week, 85,000 were strongly opposed to the bailout. She then proceeded to say that we were “confused” by the original Paulson Proposal and didn’t realize that what they were now voting on was completely different, and that for our own good, she was voting FOR the bill.

Best speech of the day (and yes, I listened to them all) goes to Jim De Mint of South Carolina, who actually had the effrontery to use the forbidden word “Socialism” in our hallowed halls. I think he even mentioned the Constitution! You’d forget we even had a Constitution if you listened to the rest of these idiots.

The politicians who vote YES today are going to regret it for the rest of their lives.

      • canucklehead

Obama, Biden, and Mccain all voted Aye. Can we just vote for Sarah Palin for POTUS?

  • hilldemgoneindie

let the senators pass it. i suspect the house will shitcan it. there’s more at stake, i believe, for reps than for senators – there always is, esp. since too many reps are up for reelection AND every two years. six years is a long time for the public to hold a grudge – two years, not so much. after the public gets a load of the load of crap the senate passes, the reps will be knocking each other down to vote no. just my lil’ ol’ opinion – i could be wrong.

    • Lou Filliger

You wouldn’t be giving me false hope now, wouldja?

      Sure hope you’re right, though.

That explains why the Senate was in such a hurry to go first. So they can vote YES and act like they’re doing something all noble, and then have the House save them.

Of course their speeches are liberally sprinkled with self-congratulation at what difficult decisions they’re making, and how they are thinking about the American people (gag, puke, kutz, hurl)

  • Andy

Can anyone confirm that there is no portion of the bill

  • Visiting Supporter

I’m ill. They’re GIVING people who made the bad decision to take a mortgage on a home they could not afford, MONEY.

    I quote from Sec 110 HR 1424:
    (2) MODIFICATIONS.—In the case of a residential mortgage loan, modifications made under paragraph (1) may include—
    1 A) reduction in interest rates;
2 B) reduction of loan principal; and
    3 C) other similar modifications.

REDUCTION OF LOAN PRINCIPAL!?!!!! Giving them a break on interest rates was bad enough… but… A gift because someone was less responsible than I was and bought a house they could not afford while I rent and save up my down payment?

I want to scream. I will not vote for anyone who votes for that legislation. McCain, Obama… that means you two, too. Now I don’t know WHAT I will do for the GE.

Go, Sen. Cantwell! (My senator, who voted against.)
