I agree with Noonan. Palin has a real gift for speaking. This is the kind of talk people can relate to.

Did you watch and of the follow-up discussions, which channels, and what did you think about their coverage?

The same feeling I had after Palin’s convention acceptance speech is the same exact feeling I have now. She captured America in this debate the same way she did in her first real national speech. I expect the polls to go up and the race will be tied up statistically.

*On Dick Morris: the hell with him, even if he makes a fair point on the debate. That ass took yet another swipe at Hillary while praising Palin.

PBS: Her words weren’t what you are used to from a candidate, but the public may like it (elitist drivel)

NBC: Williams and Brokaw: She rocked

ABC: She did very well, but gave the wrong name of the US general for Afghanistan.

Everybody had kind words for her, even the elitists who want to be snobs. They know people will like this, and they can’t be on the wrong side of that opinion.

CBS and CNN supposedly have polls showing people felt Biden won debate. Luntz’ FOX poll has overwhelming Palin victory.

CNN was really dissapointing. They always have to put a condition on McCain/Palin and a create a context favorable to Obama. It doesn’t help when they have people like Roland Martin giving debate analysis. It was terrible. MSNBC gave more fair coverage with Pat Buchanan and Roger Simon. Olbermann actually had Hawaii Republican Governor praising Palin.

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

It appears the Obama networks are really downplaying her performance. What a surprise. Poor Keith asked what you should do if someone doesn’t directly answer the question. I thought he was banned from debate coverage. Also, I am learning to ignore the polls. I voted over and over in the CNN poll. How could anyone trust that? Do you think CNN will ever put a disclaimer on Roland Martin? He’s worse than Brazille in his biases and push for Obama. His shared Chicago ties with Rev. Meeks and others should put his very role on air under scrutiny.

We Hillary Diehards had a debate-watching party and we expecting Sarah to not do too well based on how the media has been presenting her. I was suspicious since the teleprompter malfunctioned during her Convention speech, and her speech far surpassed Obama’s with teleprompter. She has convictions and is a real person. She has a record of accomplishment, which is more than just voting on a bill. For that reason, I didn’t think she’d botch the debate if she could help it.

And then the MSM trashed Hillary right and left, but have we heard about Obama’s interview with the Des Moines Register, the one in which he cited his lawyerly mind as the rationale for giving THE SPEECH at the anti-war rally when he was a state senator–but his reasoning involved the Colin Powell U.N. presentation, which occurred four months AFTER the speech, which was not mentioned in the press or recorded. Axelrod re-enacted it with audience when it appeared politically expedient to do so. I wonder if the speech was re-written as well.

We were very very impressed. Sarah Palin is a natural politician. She’s smart, energetic, honest, and stole the show. I agree with the comment I read that she field-dressed Biden like a moose.

What size of town and media coverage area for your ad? What make-up of voters? Very importantly, who are your undecideds or leaners that might be swayed by your ad? No sense writing an ad that preaches to the choir.

The media from what I saw after the debate were doing what they do. They were favorable towards Sarah on FOX, and were ripping her on MSNBC and CNN. I could only stand to watch a bit over on MSNBC, Keith came on there and 1 sec in was tearing Sarah up on everything she said! No credit to her for her performance or holding her own against a veteran of politics, NADA!

And what world is Chris Matthews living in? First it was a tingle up his leg, then tonight he was wondering what was Sarah trying to convey with all that “constant winking” she was doing to us (the audience) HELLO Chris! She winked ONCE, at her Father, in the audience NOT AT YOU!

Too simplistic and somewhat incorrect. The goal of extending housing opportunities to people who might not otherwise qualify for a home loan is a respectable and important goal. If the only problem was that some folks got in over their heads, fine, pick up the tab for the effort.

But that turns out to not be the problem. When companies were allowed to set up unrealistic interest rates and then sold the mortgages to companies that raded them like stocks it magnified the risk made to get people into homes.

Finally, Congress then balked at any changes. I watched a whole series of clips lately with members of Congress berating any suggestion there might be a problem and that changes might be needed.

Maybe I’m be too simplistic as well, but I think the goals were valid and needed but Congress failed to manage the risk and how these risky mortgages were traded.

Roland Martin is just AWFUL. There is no denying that Palin did a terrific job. Her performance gives me new hope.

Wow, what debate was Chris Matthews watching? I don’t know about the other networks– I watched it all on C-Span as I did the Pres debate. Pleasantly devoid of any and all punditry

I’m not sure if the others show it split screen like they do, for almost the whole time. During the Pres debate, Obama was sneering smirking muttering jumping to interrupt all through whatever McCain was saying. And during this one… I’m not sure what was going on. Every 15 seconds Biden is mugging for the camera or something. It was weird, like he was in a big photo-op when he wasn’t speaking.

In fairness, Bosniac, much as it made me giggle, is a real term… but I don’t think it came off well. Everyone who doesn’t get it probably thinks it’s a gaffe, and for those who do, it just sounds pretentious like Obama and his “Pakistan”.

For the first time in my adult life I could even overlook the word nucular.

Well, my best thinking is that Sarah won 60% vs. 40% Joe Biden. Joe WAS coherent and no gaffes.

But, I was very happy that our real lady Sarah did very well tonight! I am very biased for the McCain/Palin ticket, but I indeed was happy w/ Gov. Palin. Way to go!

I don’t think you’re being too simplistic.

In fact, I was under the impression that this all got started because banks/lenders often discriminated against minorities based on race and not necessarily income. There were always cases where whites with similar income and credit got mortgages and blacks didn’t.

How it turned into a situation where people were able to get mortgages when realistically they would never be able to pay them, I’ll never understand.

The idea/goal should be a level playing field. And remember, the buyers are not profiting, they are being exploited for profit.

I thought Biden did well too. I’d give the debate to him on content, but Palin has undone the damage of earlier televised interviews. They probably both consider the evening successful.

I breeze by the Repub blogs lately (yep, I know, what the hell has happened) and they were ready to take her down if she didn’t deliver. They are not as partisan as I thought back when I was a Dem partisan.

Something I saw on CNN Post-debate. Soledad O’brien was hosting a post-debate focus group and held a raised-hand poll of who won. First for Biden, after which she commented “there was an overwhelming majority.” When asked for Palin, she commented there were a “handfull.” However, when I paused and couned the votes, out of the 32 people there, 13 raised hands for Biden, while there are clearly 15 for Palin with 4 not voting. An overwhelming victory, indeed. Have it on my DVR, will try to up a copy to the net.

Obviously libs are rattled when they are lying while the truth is directly visible to the viewing public.

A conflict of interest is a conflict of interest. I know ethics and the law doesn’t matter to Obama supporters but America is still a land of law, and some still have ethics in this country.

Of course, when you support Obama, who takes money from foreign contributors, Wall Street executives and have supporters like Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Castro, etc., what’s a little conflict of interest.

Did anyone catch when Biden was chuckling and signaling to someone in the crowd? It was while Sarah was speaking.

Obama is the joke-no actually his supporters are the joke, he’s the Joker, so his supporters should go on The Daily Show.

Biden has no passion or excitement for Obama. Also, he looked ridiculous spouting Obama talking points on Iraq when he voted for the war.

Palin showed genuine excitement and belief in John McCain.

I just got home I watched at my daughters house. I am so proud of her, she was the Sarah from the convention. The way Biden looked at her you could tell he couldn’t help but like her too. Such a refreshing change of pace. She was very respectful. I think Biden also did a good job, better than Obama did, but I did catch a few gaffes from him. I admit it I shed a tear when he was talking about his sons. I know how hard it is to sit in a hospital not knowing from day to day if your child is going to make it. I also know how hard it is to loose a child. I thought the moderator did an excellent job. She was very professional.I am going to send her an apology, I owe her one.

You may wish to check out the This American Life episode about the mortgage crisis, the Giant Pool of Money. Its thesis is that because of an expanded pool of money chasing investment in American mortgage-backed securities, there was immense pressure to give out mortgages at nearly any cost. Everyone was making money on the scheme until it all collapsed in and they weren’t any more.

This was a fairly recent phenomenon that occurred with the rise of the Chinese and Indian economy who added their new economic muscle to the worldwide Pool of Money chasing investments.

Nowhere is the Community Reinvestment Act or minority homeowners mentioned.

I thought Sarah Palin was terrific. She is one of us and she understands our problems. When you consider that Pelosi allowed this credit crisis to fester in order to have it as a debate issue close to the election — they are tone deaf in Washington when it comes to issues that matter to us. Sarah Palin hears us.

I think the national polls should start to tighten. However, we still have a long way to go.

We need an October Surprise though. If it’s coming, it needs to be now. There really aren’t any “natural” game changers left. The next 2 debates will be too heavily rehearsed to be of any value.

I agree with whoframedrudy, we were quick to criticize, as the Obots do without justification, so we need to extend an apology to Ifill for assuming she would exhibit bias. I was one who emailed the station voicing my objection to have her moderate. She really showed fairness. No matter why she did is unimportant at this point. It was very refreshing,especially during this long election process, to observe a moderator and/or reporter giving respectful unbias reporting and/or questioning of the candidates no matter who they support.

I watched the debate on PBS. After it was over, my initial thought was that Palin won because, as I just saw on the Peggy Noonan video above, Palin controlled the debate by putting Joe Biden on the defensive. Do I think that Palin is more versed in policy than Biden? Probably not, but that doesn’t make a difference to me because it’s not all about being a policy wonk. Palin obviously has the ability to connect with people, and her speaking style did exactly that. I was anxious to watch the debate, not because I thought Sarah would perform badly, but because I wanted to see her perform in the manner that I expected. She actually exceeded my expectation since I never anticipated that she would actually control a good 3/4′s of the debate.

I forgot to write that both David Brooks and Mark Shields stated that she did well. I believe that David Brooks was impressed with Palin’s debating capabilities, while Mark Shields was probably impressed with the fact that Sarah Palin did not implode, and that she actually exceeded his own expectations. If I remember correctly, they were not sure how her performance would actually play to the American public, though.

I recall a comment somewhere on this blog in the past week that talked about AA women not liking Sarah because she was too perfect. I don’t understand this, because she’s not. She says “nukular”, she has a pregnant unmarried teenage daughter, she’s made a few enemies in her small town just like most of us have when people have disagreed with us, she apparently went through 5 colleges in 6 years before graduating. And so on. Sarah Palin seems to be the kind of person who takes life as it comes and makes the absolute best of it that she can with her god-given abilities and personal characteristics. Isn’t that what most of us try to do? Take imperfect circumstances and do the best with them that we can?

About the most I can say is that I can understand it if people with my kind of luck (over the years friends have laughed at some of my incredible misfortunes) resent her for having better luck, being at the right place at the right time, etc. But what I can’t understand is why the same people don’t resent Obama just as much for exactly the same reason.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

Yes, the $250,000 is for couples – so, if one of you owns a business that makes $150,000/yr and the other earns $100,000, Obama’s going to raise your taxes and give them to, among others, the 40% who pay no taxes at all. It’s called income redistribution. Of course, you may have to lay off a worker or two, and then that worker can live off of his one-time gift from the Obama adminstration. For the most part that memo is very admiring of Obama so the excerpts of your comment are sort of the negatives but there is plenty in there for O to use to his benefit (since it is an ambassador leak probably not). McC ain campaign has an ad out today attacking Biden’s lies. What Biden did in that debate is give McCain Palin a field full of fodder for attacking the O/B ticket for lies. I’m really disgusted with the American male mindset. Other countries have women heads-of-state, countries where women don’t enjoy the freedoms that they do here and still so many American males simply can’t disonnect their hormones when dealing with women who are working in a professional capacity.

There are certainly more than enough women who want to be ogled and appreciated for their physical beauty, but there are, believe it or not guys, women who are not in that mindset. We will never get a woman POTUS as long as a substantial number of men show their contempt for women in this manner. In fact, it may be a way of keeping us down.

I respect countries that have had a woman as their leader. They seem to deal with her only on that level instead of picking her apart on how she looks.

I watched the split screen on C-Span, too. Biden looked a lot like GWB while Palin was speaking with the mugging to someone in the audience, and the “watch this drive” cockiness. He also sighed a lot. So, it’s slanted for Matthews to pick out a wink from Palin while ignoring Biden’s mannerisms.

Biden’s moment of getting choked up seemed fake to me, but the double standard applied to women and men on this is sexist. If Palin had “teared up,” at any point in this debate the media would have covered it nonstop for days.

I thought Biden was condescending when he stepped over Palin’s answer about global warming. Her answer was that no matter what you believed about its cause, it was real and needed to be addressed. He was arrogant with his “how can you address the issue if you don’t know the causes.” She sounded more knowledgeable than him because she acknowledged the sunspot cycle issue in her answer.

All in all, when I listen to Biden’s glibness and reflect on his long record of “service,” all I can think of is rubber chicken dinner speeches. Maybe it’s just me.

You are right to add ‘chuckle’ after “palin did great”. Come on, everyone knows that she’s a time bomb ready to explode which is why McCain never let’s her talk off script.

Gov. Palin came off well on the climate change portion. I could not help but think she knew more because of her experience and ability to see all sides of the issue.

To me the most poignant thing Palin said last night was about not wanting to have to tell our children that America used to be free; about safeguarding our freedom and passing it on to our children.

My greatest fear is the loss of our freedom and democracy if Obama is elected.

Palin said it indirectly last night; the Repubs are hinting at it in their ads. They know, but if the people who have the voice to reach millions of people don’t start shouting it loud and clear, they will be complicit in our loss of freedom.

If the danger Obama poses to freedom and democracy is shouted from the rooftops the MSM and his other supporters will scream racism. It is dangerous because it may turn more people to Obama.

I’ve heard Obama, Biden and his surrogates constantly say that he won’t raise taxes on “anyone making less than $250,000 per year”. This is quite different than counting the entire family’s income towards the $250,000. So according to his plan what’s the limit for an individual then? My husband and I are small business owners and we work long hours to earn extra money to save for our retirement and pay for college. We make too much to receive money from the government, have to pay for our own health care, and we usually can’t take many deductions at both the federal and state level because we’re above the income threshold. Upper Middle Class people in our situation get hit worse than many others — not only do we pay more taxes but we also lose the deductions others get. We are making sacrifices for our success because we’re motivated to try and achieve the American Dream. But if Obama plans to take our money and give it someone else then we’ll plan to decrease our business volume which will impact our employees as well. All candidates prep before debates. Then, they step onto the stage and convey to the public well-thought out,cogent,fluid and logically reasoned responses. They also analyze their opponent’s record and attempt to deliver clear, cohesive answers.

Key word being answer.Her handlers, apparently, didn’t explain to her what that word meant.

Finally, a viable candidate certainly does not study for two weeks just to be able to ‘pull off’ a half-assed performance to quiet those in her party who want her off the ticket.

That wasn’t a debate last nite. That was a woman fighting for her political future. And her performance was insulting to most Americans.

Palin didn’t tank so it’s a win for her. But she did not make the case that a McCain/Palin administration is a direct change from a Bush/Cheney one. Biden made the case for him and Obama. She also doesn’t know her running mate’s record very well. Biden knew it better than she did. Biden and Palin handled themselves like true professionals and both made no serious mistakes. However, there were no game changing moments for neither candidate and as much as you PUMAs and neocons want it to happen, don’t expect any real movement in the polls. Technically Biden won, but Palin was confident and poised and did not tank. She won but the immediate result is that McCain’s campaign is now off of life support for a few weeks. It’s up to McCain to bring it home and so far, he’s shown that he’s not quite up to the job.

Not that anyone wondered…but if you needed confirmation that the MSM is in the bag, bought and paid for by Oprah, Soros, etc. for Obama, then last night was the clincher.
