(Real) Democrats Are Taking to the Road for McCain & Open Thread

The following 15 states will decide this election: Washington state, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Maine, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. But we all know Ohio is the state where the outcome of this election will be determined.

Because this election will hinge on the results in Ohio, I ask everyone at No Quarter to consider participating in or contributing to an effort spearheaded by Real Democrats, a group of Democrats, Independents and Republicans who will visit Hillary Clinton supporters in Ohio before votes are cast in November. I quote their press release:

Real Democrats is organizing a bus tour through Ohio next weekend and they need your help!

WHAT are we doing?

Taking as many people as will join us to small HRC-lovin’ towns across Ohio to talk to people and hand-out Nobama flyers

Thursday, October 16th.
Participants will congregate in Columbus, OH—-

October 17th:
Bus will leave promptly at 8:30 am Friday, morning

October 17-19
We will stop all along the way at fall festivals, shopping centers and any place Ohioans congregate– and talk to people and pass out flyers.

We will travel throughout Ohio, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (we will return to Columbus by 5 pm). We will stay overnight at motels in target destinations and share rooms to control costs.

We need money for gas for the motor coach, signs for the bus and flyers.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is we contribute to the effort of Real Democrats. They need money for gas, and they need money for printing fliers. They also need volunteers, and they welcome anyone who is willing to ride in their caravan and canvass the many towns in Ohio that supported Hillary Clinton during the primary. The time is now to reach swing voters, and this can only be done with volunteers and with contributions.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the organizer of the Real Democrats’ effort, and I can vouch for its legitimacy and efficacy: they are organized; they are serious; they are motivated; and they promise to paper the state of Ohio with literature that will educate the voters on Obama and his record. Their caravan will also brandish large signs. Please either volunteer or contribute, for they will target the voters who will decide this election. And if we help them raise enough funds, they will storm Pennsylvania and Virginia before votes are cast in November.

    The PA polls assume that there will be a million more democrats (that is about 12%) then republicans voting. Now in 2006 the exit poll reported that 38% rep 43% dem 19% ind. That is a 5% advantage for democrats. But I believe that was more a vote against Bush and Republican congress then anything else. Bush is not running this time and the republicans are not in charge of congress. In 2004 it was much closer. It was 39% rep 41% dem 20% ind. I believe it will be the same this time around. If they keep advertising that BO is ahead by 12% point a lots of BO supporters will not vote. Most of his supporters are in the densely populated areas where you have to stand in line for hours to cast your vote. For some reason we are being expected to believe that all the registered voters really care about this election. One thing that has been certain in all the elections. Democrats out number republicans and they don’t turn out as the republicans do. So take all the polls with a grain of salt.

      I guess the idea is to discourage Republicans from sticking with it for the next 30 days.

        Republicans will vote no matter what. That is one of the requirements to be a republican. Unfortunately once can’t say that about democrats.

      They also aren’t telling you how many of those Democrats are Reagan Democrats, or Catholic, or Hunters, or Retirees (Allegheny Co. has the second largest elderly population next to Broward Co. Florida), or military or Nat’l Guard, or voted for Tom Ridge, or live in one of the most stable housing markets in the country (evidence that we didn’t buy in to the housing/mortgage scam as much as others did), or live in small towns, etc.
      We still haven’t forgotten about the “clinging to guns and religion” comment and even if we did, those who live in the Pittsburgh area received a great booklet today containing his quote and reminding us all how much Barack Obama really likes us.

      I have to tell you. I never thought I would be taking the leap I have been, but I am. Today I delivered some signs to folks. One that has a great spot in my neighborhood where he already had one sign. He told me to bring more tomorrow,(for backup) because (Obama) supporters keep taking his signs. That won’t be a problem, because I committed to go make calls here at the office tomorrow.lol Whodathunk? Donate, signs, now phone banking. LOL

        I got a call from the McCain/Palin volunteer roundup person tonight. I had registered online and have gone to the Republican headquarters as well. Anyhow he told me that attorneys were working around the clock, to prevent voter fraud. Of special concern is OHIO.

        The electronic voting machines here in Florida have a more secure keyed entry system then the Diebold machines and he seemed to think they were tamper proof, but that the GOP would stay on them. On Saturday I go again to the GOP headquarters and learn about poll watching.

        Hope everyone will do something, even if it is small. One email may go around the world and may be the one thing that changes it too.

    Got my fingers crossed and checkbook ready that you’re right, John. I’m convinced that Barack Obama and the current lineup in the Dem’s senior leadership will tip the country into a massive financial and political disaster.

    Right now, we don’t think it can get any worse. But it can. If there’s been any year when our votes count and stand to dramatically change our personal destiny, it’s this year. November 4th, 2008.

    I don’t say this lightly. I am a lifelong Democrat but I’m crossing party lines.

      Turnout is key in this election. So who ever thinks that her/his vote does not matter because they are in a blue state better think again. This election will be contested when JMac wins but does not win the popular vote. Although I think that would be poetic justice. So make sure you go out to vote even if you live in CA or NY. It is very important to win the popular vote as well.

    Well, John Smith, as a fellow Pennsylvanian, I hope you are right. I am dismayed that the polls in PA are trending Obama-ward. I just don’t see how that is possible. Sure, I thought he would take Philadelphia, but I didn’t think the margin there would be so huge, because the voting system is so disorganized, and the lines are always too long. However, in the Northeast, I know very few people who are actually planning to vote for Obama. Most of my aquaintances are either voting for McCain or writing Hillary in. Furthermore, I didn’t think Obama had a chance in hell in the western counties, which are very conservative. Meanwhile, Lady DeRothschild (spelling?) has just opened up an anti-Obama headquarters which will vigorously campaign against Obama in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. She is being joined by some very devoted Democrats.

    So, thanks for the pep talk. I hope you are right. I would be devastated if Obama took PA. I thought are citizens had more “common sense” than to vote for a snake-oil salesman.

        I doubt that McCain would adopt Hillary Clinton’s solution to the housing market without her stated permission.

        This is important on two counts. First, it should be a clear message that McCain and Hillary put their country first.

        Secondly, while Hillary cannot voice it directly, perhaps her choice is McCain and yes not stated so obviously.

        Obama LOST PA during the primary. Despite virtually every poll claiming he would win by the double digits. There’s been NO huge shift to Obama there since.

        And he’s not going to win PA in less than four weeks either.

      I’m also a Pennsylvanian and there is NO way that he is leading in this state by what the polls say – it is hogwash. The samples are WAY off from the electorate. We’re going to get through this and we’re going to beat Obama.

      BTW – I live in the Philly suburbs – the “battleground within the battleground” state and I have to tell you – when I drive around the lawn signs are split down the middle – half McCain/Palin and half Obama/Biden.

      I believe McCain can win – especially if Obama gets arrogant here and starts looking at VA and OH and forgets that he has to focus here.

      I worked for HRC in this state in the primaries – I knocked on doors – I know how many people LOVED Hillary.

      Also, Obama outspent HRC here 3-1 and she still beat him by 9%. Just work hard and believe that miracles can happen.

      Anne Marie – If you personally know those people who are writing in Hillary’s name, please try to convince them to vote a PROTEST VOTE AGAINST OBUMMER and VOTE FOR MCCAIN. This ONE very dangerous election just MAY change our lives, our way of living and our freedoms FOREVER; this election is TOO important to show your loyalty to Hillary by writing in her name – she won’t benefit from it anyway; WE ALL WILL LOSE if Obummer is elected.

    So when are you going to come to PA? Simple fact – it is almost impossible for Obama to win without winning PA – I agree completely with John Smith – the polls are ridiculous. The Survey USA Poll of PA had O up 15%, but guess what? There were 11% more Democrats in the poll than Republicans!!

    John’s right – PA is closer than people think – there are a lot of HRC’s PUMAs here. Also, I keep getting e-mails from some of HRC’s former supporters who have gone over to Obama and they are literally begging women to come and “talk” with some of the Democratic higher-ups about why they “need” to support O.

    Long and short – PUMAs are strong here and we need to organize for McCain.Palin – especially, now that McCain is supporting Hillary’s home mortgage plan and Obama is against it!

    I’m in Florida and if there is anything like this going on here someone let me know!

    I went to our local McCain office yesterday (never thought I would step foot in a Republican campaign office!) and picked up Democrats for McCain bumper stickers. Also got Jewish Americans for McCain (half of us are Jewish-Christians, don’t ask). My car is stickered up!!! And I hate bumper stickers.

      Here is another Florida Democrat for McCain. My hubby hates bumpers stickers too, but he put his another Democrat for McCain on his back window of his new truck :)

      Do like I did and walk in to a GOP headquarters and ask what you can do. Here in my town the teenagers are organizing a neighborhood grid to get out the votes.

    I have to think these polls are getting most of their results in urban areas, not the rural or even suburban areas. I live in the suburbs, and I don’t see any Obama signs, just McCain/Palin. If I drove 20 minutes across town, it would be a different demographic mix altogether. I don’t personally know anyone voting for BO.

    I wish I were closer and could get off from work, but I will contribute. Thanks for all who give their time and money for such an effort. If it’s needed in Florida, I’ll be there.

    I really think it’s fantastic if Obama fans think they have it in the bag and McCain voters are worried. How many people have I seen on blogs who have said “i’ll vote third party unless I see that Obama’s got a chance. Only then will I vote for McCain.” I think that extra sense of urgency is great.

    I also believe that the “bradley effect” is very real. I saw someone explain on another post that the “Bradley effect” is not racist voters but people who didn’t want to admit that they were not for Obama, not because they are racist, but because they didn’t want to APPEAR to be racist. I can really relate to that. I am most definitely not racist but I have not admitted to any of my’bot friends that I, a lifelong Democrat, am voting McCain. Everyone I know considers the label “racist” as one of the worst insults you can call someone. The “Bradley Effect” will account for a larger percentage of pro-McCain votes than they think.

I met with a group of middle class democrats today, and they said, almost to a man. that they had no intention of voting for Barky, They said they’d look at Green party or whomever, to avoid voting for someone they felt was deceptive or misleading in this campaign. Truthfully, their message was country over party.

        in this particular election year, with all the voter fraud going on (and more anticipated as we approach election day) it might not be in the best interest for voters to support a third party candidate on the presidential level HOWEVER…and this is a BIG HOWEVER…
        There is NOTHING IN THE WORLD STOPPING US from STRONGLY supporting third party candidates on the state and local levels.

        In my opinion, we desperately need a strong third party in this country. My greatest fear is that IF Sen Obama wins the presidency, based upon how he and his campaign have managed his campaign(s), he may crush any attempts for third parties to build up strength in the USA -short of a revolution.

        That is another reason why I oppose Sen Obama’s candidacy.

    i am in central pa. I do not see alot of poeple voting obama around here.
    Everyone in my family is voting J-mac/Palin
    I also agree that an 11% advantage in dems is unlikely.
    It also should be remembered SUSA had a NC poll with mccain up 20 points a couple weeks ago.
    PA will go red. Rendell himself said obama could not win. He will win Philly and some surrounding counties sure. But i predict the T-section will turnout in larger numbers than ever before. Us bitter hicks look at obamunist as the anti-christ.
    Also, i would not let ACORN discourage anyone. They say they have registered 1.3 million. I am pretty sure that includes fraudulent registrations that were thrown out. It is probably less than half of that. And probably half of those will vote.
    Young kids will do as they do every election. I would guess obamunist does the same as kerry. Maybe a bit better.
    Republicans will come out in droves. Not to mention alot of independants were pubs who got sick of bush and the way republicans lost their way.
    The Mavericks will win indy’s i am betting by a comfortable margin.
    Also, keep in mind operation chaos. I do not think it is a huge factor. But i bet it is close to 5% if dems nationwide. Add in the bradley effect and there is -11% for barry obamunist

    Mac’s mortgage plan is based on Hillary’s and he needs to get that out there more.

    Today’s msm practically says the fight is over and Barky has won. The only good I see coming from that is maybe some of his supporters won’t feel as compelled to get out of bed on election day.

      I’m with you!! McCain needs us. I’m doing what I can here in the Philly burbs…making calls, talking to friends, striking up conversations at the grocery store…I every once in a while put on my Hillary button and wear it when I am out doing errands and it always starts up a conversation (people ask: “she’s not still on the ballot, is she?”) – which then gives me an opening to tell them that no, and since she’s not – I’m voting for McCain/Palin!

      Obama was stupid for rejecting the housing proposal of Hillary’s! When it came out a few weeks ago as an op-ed under her name – I e-mailed to everyone I knew saying “I wish she were still running!” And then yesterday, McCain surprised me and embraced the idea! Good for him.

      Oh and by the way, I’m with Camille Paglia on Sarah Palin – “she is no dummy!” (She’s not HRC, but I like her – and women will not have equal rights until women of EVERY ideological inclination and EVERY socio-economic status level are in public office!!

      I would like to make phone calls but my concern is, will my number show up on caller id or would someone be able to do *69 ( or whatever code) and find out where the call came from? How does it work?

    Regarding the polls– I tell very few people I’m not voting Obama–it’s just too controversial here in Northern CA. I have a Nader sticker next to my PUMA sticker because I’m afraid my car would be vandalized if I put on a Dem for McCain. But my husband and I will both vote Repub for the first time in our lives.

    And one more thing about the polls–I am signed up to do on-line Zogby polling. He sent me tons of polls during 2004 and 2006. I still got polled during the primaries except after June when I said I was a Dem who had voted for Kerry and was voting McCain–that happened twice and I’ve never been polled since then about politics. They don’t want to know about the Hillary PUMAS.

      My mom is in SF – and she is voting against BOTH Obama and Pelosi – for McCain and Cindy Sheehan. She told me she can’t wait until election day – but she also told me that it is really hard for her to talk to anyone because of how much O is “loved” there. I do think it is going to be closer than many think…wait and see…oh and then by the way, be prepared to be called “racist” just because you’re not a socialist like Barry!

        I’m in SF and I’ve been calling into talk radio here as a Democrat for McCain. I tell them the only two things I like about Obama are: 1) he’s a person of color and 2) he says he’ll raise taxes. I do that to prove my Dem credentials.

        Then I go into why I think Obama is wrong at this time. I usually talk about his reticence, we need a president who takes action, FDR took action and tried things until something works. Also, on foreign policy, Obama’s reticence will be bad. Kruschev DID test Kennedy with the Cuban Missile Crisis because he perceived Kennedy as weak.

        I just feel like I have to be vocal. I’ve been a little vocal at work but that is hard because my boss’ boss is totally for Obama. I said if Obama wins, people will be happy for about 6 months, that’s it. Then reality will set in. I say he reminds me of George W. Bush. If I turn a few votes, it will have been worth it.

      I’m a PA PUMA who lurks here regularly and I am solidly behind McCain/Palin.

      I live in a racially mixed neighborhood and prior to the PA primary, the Ogotohell yard signs clearly outnumbered the HRC signs. However, HRC won PA by double-digits.

      Now, hardly anyone is putting up signs for either candidate. I know that I fear vandalism/retaliation if I make my preference known publicly. As a result, no yard sign or bumper sticker for me. I hope that the lack of visible support for either candidate means that my neighbors will be voting for McCain as well, and they are keeping their intentions private.

      Also, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your posts. You always seem to have something interesting and valuable to say.

    I live in NYC and usually there are signs and bumper stickers attesting to support for some candidate. Not this time. No Obama, but also no McCain. Very interesting.

      My in-laws have the same observation down in Florida. Not many McCain or Obama lawn signs in Orlando, Daytona Beach, Tampa, and Panhandle area, compared to 2004. They said back in 2004, there were Bush/Cheney and Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers and yard signs everywhere!

      Yes, but I know people who work in NY city government offices and they tell me that they get pro-Obama campaign emails and “calls to action” from their colleagues sent to their government e-mail addresses AND that their supervisors constantly ridicule McCain and Palin in front of the entire office staffs. It’s disgusting — this, along with the 2 remarks above about not being able to be visibly pro-McCain/Palin in California are signs of a very un-American oppression. Instead of the government stifling freedom of expression, “mass public opinion” and fear of physical retribution are putting a lid on our 1st Amendment rights….. Sad days in this country when people don’t feel free to express basic political opinions in public. Along with a whole list of other reasons, this particular reason is motivation enough to vote McCain/Palin – as an expression of defiance against fear.

      Same here in my part of Florida. One Obama sign and one another Democrat for McCain. Except for my own signs.

      The sign I put up at my office building went away in about 10 hours. At my rural property that one still stands.

    I don’t care who Obama associates with. What i care about is if he’s honest about those relationships, and he has not been about any of them. He was far closer to Ayers than he’s admitting now, and the obfuscation is very worrisome. What would he do as president? Spin, lie, obfuscate? Didn’t we just get that with Bush?

    Remember, Clinton won the major states like Pennsylvaina, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, etc all with working class voters who have been called names, accused of racism and insulted by BO. All of these tactics will not work, fake polls will not work, it only revs us up more to go to that booth and rid the country of this socialist, anti-American fraud. Get involved, put up signs, talk to people, pass out homemade pamphlets, I’m doing this in Virginia and I don’t care what they call me. Palin’s coming Monday and I’m getting my signs ready for the rally.

    I am also questioning the validity of the polls. They were wrong many times during the primary season, and I think they are wrong again. They are trying to drive a certain narrative. I live in the Monterey, California area, and I have not seen that many Obama bumper stickers or yard signs. Four years ago, the Kerry signs were everywhere. I am starting to see more McCain signs in the area too. I think many people are keeping it to themselves, that they are not voting BO because they want to avoid conflict. I really think that McCain is going to win, and win big. JMO and gut feeling.

    Where I live there are NO Obama signs to be seen, anywhere. There’s a few McCain signs. It is a RED state through and through. It is a joy to be so Obama free.

    Most of the comments go along these lines:

    “I just can’t vote for Obama”

    “Obama is the antichrist.”

    ” That MFer is an effing thug.”

    i’m quoting from another blog, one of the best statements of the economic crisis, obama’s false accusation that it is all W’s fault and mccain’s failure to clarify. someone needs to get these words into mccain’s mouth for the next month and for the next debate:

    “Obama continued to lie about what brought about this financial crisis. The wheels did not magically start to come off the day George W. Bush sat down in the Oval Office chair, and the party-line votes regarding Fannie and Freddie put the Democrats on the side against regulation of those institutions. Even Bill Clinton has debunked this line. That John McCain didn’t even bother to set the record straight on this is a huge missed opportunity, moreso because it was a carbon copy of Obama’s line in the first debate.”

    I wanted to put a McCain/Palin sign on my front lawn but was leaving for an extended period of time and was actually afraid that some obamabot would go on a rampage and destroy my home. Others could feel the same intimidation. There is a feeling of fear and violence associated with the obama army.

    I’m in the San Jose/Sunnyvale area. San Jose Mercury News said you find Obama stickers on cars parked at Whole Earth Foods a lot. My family reports seeing McCain/Palin bumper stickers on some cars here. This is an area that went for Hillary. Northern CA is liberal democrat.

    I believe McCain’s system is the same as Hillary’s. You call an 800# that shows up on the receiver’s caller i.d. so they don’t even know from which state you are calling.

    I LOVED calling for Hillary and I will call for McCain. The great thing about calling from home is that you can squeeze in an hour or half hour whenever you have the time.

    Tzada—- The investigator/writer will be in Hannity Fox tv next Monday. the radio interview yesterday from London he stated that he was able to snick out of Kenya some original documents given to him by Odingas political supporters after finding out of his intent to promote the Sharia law. He also said that he has e-mails from “THAT ONE”=OB campaing HQ giving Odinga campaining instructions and some other info after talking to few reporters from BBC in London.

    I am loving the massive teamwork and effort coming together on this blog to defeat Nobama. I live in California, which went for HRC, as they should have. There are McCain Palin signs all over San Diego and Santa Barbara (my hometown). There are also Obama signs all over LA and San Fran, so the state will likely go blue. I find it affrontive that the media continues to lump Democrats into one large group, when we are very divided. But if you’re a Democrat that moved to McCain, you’re invisible! How can these polls be ‘representative’ when a whole, significantly sized segment is not even on the radar? The media keeps painting up Republicans voting Obama, but not PUMA.

    THAT’S how we know we can’t trust them. We’re invisible to them, they don’t want to see us. But that means we can operate under their radar as well – and we should use that.

    I’d love to see a Dewey Truman moment – when the newspapers reported Dewey defeated Truman by a landslide…and Truman had actually won.

    Headline: “Obama wins in landslide”. When it’s McCain that will actually win!
