McCain Releases Letter To Obama

John McCain has claimed he is a reformer, and has the record to back it up. Obama has claimed to be a reformer, and to have worked with John McCain on campaign finance reform. His record does not back him up. But, don’t take my word for it, take Senator McCain’s:

McCain Releases Letter to Obama
February 6, 2006
Washington D.C. – Today, Senator McCain sent the following letter to Senator Obama regarding ongoing Congressional efforts towards bipartisan lobbying reform. The following is the text from that letter:

February 6, 2006

The Honorable Barack Obama

United States Senate

SH-713

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Obama:

I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere.

When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable.

Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble.

Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.

As you know, the Majority Leader has asked Chairman Collins to hold hearings and mark up a bill for floor consideration in early March. I fully support such timely action and I am confident that, together with Senator Lieberman, the Committee on Governmental Affairs will report out a meaningful, bipartisan bill.

You commented in your letter about my “interest in creating a task force to further study” this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate.

Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate’s return in January.

Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that any lobbying reform proposal be bipartisan. The bill Senators Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson and I have introduced is evidence of that commitment as is my insistence that members of both parties be included in meetings to develop the legislation that will ultimately be considered on the Senate floor.

As I explained in a recent letter to Senator Reid, and have publicly said many times, the American people do not see this as just a Republican problem or just a Democratic problem. They see it as yet another run-of-the-mill Washington scandal, and they expect it will generate just another round of partisan gamesmanship and posturing. Senator Lieberman and I, and many other members of this body, hope to exceed the public’s low expectations. We view this as an opportunity to bring transparency and accountability to the Congress, and, most importantly, to show the public that both parties will work together to address our failings.

As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.

Sincerely,

John McCain

United States Senate

I think that pretty much says it all, don’t you?

The MSM won’t. If they didnt didn’t cover it in two years they won’t now. The MSM with the exception of FOX wants to elect Obama.

  • imustprotest

Yes, I read this a long time ago. If MSM reports this I would be shocked. McCain needs to pull it out in the debate.

  • DJ

This is why I can trust McCain.

  • hootnannie

Obama tells people whatever they want to hear and then flip-flops. This is a perfect example and should frighten anyone thinking of voting for the bamboozler.

Has anyone stopped to consider that it’s not that necessarily that Obama does better as the economy tanks but that the stock market has been tanking since Obama pulled ahead in the polls.

This is the letter FROM Obama that triggered this response:

    February 2, 2006

    The Honorable John McCain
    United States Senate
    241 Russell Senate Office Building
    Washington, DC 20510

    Dear John:

Thank you for inviting me to participate in the meeting yesterday to discuss lobbying and ethics reform proposals currently before the Senate. I appreciate your willingness to reach out to me and several other Senate Democrats to discuss what should be done to restore public confidence in the way that Congress conducts its business. The discussion clearly underscored the difficult challenge facing Congress.

You and many in the Democratic Caucus have played a major role in reform efforts in the Senate. In fact, the Indian Affairs Committee hearings you led were instrumental in promoting public awareness of the culture of corruption that has permeated the nation’s capital.

As you know, Senator Harry Reid and others in the Democratic Caucus have taken an important step by introducing S. 2180, the Honest Leadership Act, which imposes many of the same disclosure requirements for lobbyists that you have proposed, while also strengthening enforcement, eliminating “pay to play” schemes, and imposing more restrictive rules on meals, gifts, and travel that Members and their staff can receive from special interests that advocate before Congress. This bill, which now has the support of 40 members of the Democratic Caucus, represents a significant step in addressing many of the worst aspects of corruption that have come to light as a result of the Justice Department investigation of Jack Abramoff.

I know you have expressed an interest in creating a task force to further study and discuss these matters, but I and others in the Democratic Caucus believe the more effective and timely course is to allow the committees of jurisdiction to roll up their sleeves and get to work on writing ethics and lobbying reform legislation that a majority of the Senate can support. Committee consideration of these matters through the normal course will ensure that these issues are discussed in a public forum and that those within Congress, as well as those on the outside, can express their views, ensuring a thorough review of this matter.

Given the state of affairs in Washington, we have a historic opportunity to make fundamental changes in the way our government operates so that the actions we take as public officials are responsive and transparent to the American people. Thank you again for your interest in this important matter.

    Sincerely,

    Barack Obama
    United States Senator

  • roger_fromNJ

    Wow, McCain’s response was righteous!

  • LookingForwardTo2012

From Freshman Senator in Illinois 2004 to Freshman Senator in Washington 2006 to wannabe President in 2008. He is a bored flip-flopper, at best…I shudder to think what he is, at worst.

John McCain is a stand-up man who has the very best interest of America at heart.

It will be a shameful day for our country if he is not our next President.

  • savage

and I ask you, Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy, why did you leave Obama’s letter out of the equation?

context is important, don’t you agree?

  • Ellen D.

“THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST?”!!! That sounds like some kind of brush-off you give an annoying constituent, not the way you speak to a senior senator. Obama has always been so full of himself.

This is Obama’s reply to McCain Feb 6th Letter:

    February 6, 2006

    The Honorable John McCain
    United States Senate
    241 Russell Senate Office Building
    Washington, DC 20510

    Dear John:

During my short time in the U.S. Senate, one of the aspects about this institution that I have come to value most is the collegiality and the willingness to put aside partisan differences to work on issues that help the American people. It was in this spirit that I approached you to work on ethics reform, and it was in this spirit that I agreed to attend your bipartisan meeting last week. I appreciated then – and still do appreciate – your willingness to reach out to me and several other Democrats.

For this reason, I am puzzled by your response to my recent letter. Last Wednesday morning, you called to invite me to your meeting that afternoon. I changed my schedule so I could attend the meeting. Afterwards, you thanked me several times for attending the meeting, and we left pledging to work together.

As you will recall, I told everyone present at the meeting that my caucus insisted that the consideration of any ethics reform proposal go through the regular committee process. You didn’t indicate any opposition to this position at the time, and I wrote the letter to reiterate this point, as well as the fact that I thought S. 2180 should be the basis for a bipartisan solution.

I confess that I have no idea what has prompted your response. But let me assure you that I am not interested in typical partisan rhetoric or posturing. The fact that you have now questioned my sincerity and my desire to put aside politics for the public interest is regrettable but does not in any way diminish my deep respect for you nor my willingness to find a bipartisan solution to this problem.

    Sincerely,

    Barack Obama
    United States Senator

To me, this exchange is a CLEAR example of how unwilling McCain is to “work across the isle.”

    it’s really sad.

yeah, Obama never wants to hold hearing and hold folks accountable.
He has a comittee that he never hled ONE meeting.

Instead of writing random law, you question and interview and hold poeple accountable to get the best results.

I love McCain’s tone. Once again, Obama was in it for the glory and not for the finished product.

And once again, McCain shows willingness to work across the aisle, in this case with our Dem senator Nelson.

The Bill that Obama was favoring not a Bi-Partisan effort but instead a Democratic Bill done entirely by the DEMS. If you ever want anything to pass the Sernate you need at least 60 votes, that means it has to be a Bipartisan Bill and has to get votes from both sides.

  • TexasBuckeye

Context is important. In what context did Obama associate with Ayers? In what context did Reverend Wright serve as Obama’s spiritual advisor and mentor? In what context did the money exchange hands between Rezko and Obama?

Unfortunately, there is no context with which to justify Obama’s “talk-to-the-hand” attitude toward McCain.

    “you guys”

what do you mean by “you guys”? are you a republican? is this a republican site?

savage…are you not comprehending the substance of all 3 open letters?

uhbama backed off by siding with HARRY REID’S idea of ‘reform’, instead of McCain’s.

uhbama insinuated that he now decided against creating a special committee to look at corruption because it would be wasting time.

My God…what’s you reading comprehension level?

uhbama is a slimy worm..reading these clearly shows that, and highlighting pretty words doesn’t mean a damn thing, when you read them in CONTEXT as you capitalized earlier for us.

  • http://www.TheOtherDemocrats.com FloridaEx-Dem

Yup. Obama was grandstanding for personal attention for a purely Dem effort rather than working across the aisle in a bipartisan project.

I have to admit, I’m really sick of Obama’s grandstanding and arrogance. AND flip flopping – tho it’s not a part of this thread, this is something I just read. He can’t even remember what he said before and he’s too arrogant to even consider that there are things like TAPE and ARCHIVES of all his grandiose statements. He’s no better than Bush. Actually, he IS the next Bush. 4 more years – of Bush in a left-leaning empty suit. Gag.

    Obama Rejects Own Mortgage Idea
    By Mark Impomeni
    Oct 8th 2008 8:00PM

During last night’s second presidential debate, Sen. John McCain made some news by proposing a federal bailout of home mortgages in an effort to help “stabilize home values.” The plan, which McCain admitted would be “expensive” would allow the U.S. Treasury to buy distressed mortgages directly from the holders and renegotiate a new fixed-rate loan at the home’s current market-adjusted value. The idea is to help struggling homeowners stay in their houses while at the same time boosting confidence in the real estate markets, which McCain said was at the root of the economic crisis.

Sen. Barack Obama did not initially react to McCain’s bold stroke, but today, his campaign rejected the idea out of hand. Obama economic adviser Jason Furman said that the plan was simply too expensive. “John McCain’s plan to overpay for bad mortgages by handing taxpayer dollars over to big financial institutions is erratic policy-making at its worst, and its not the change we need to strengthen our economy, create new jobs and keep Americans in their homes. The biggest beneficiaries of this plan will be the same financial institutions that got us into this mess, some of whom even committed fraud.” That’s a pretty strong condemnation of the McCain plan. The trouble for Obama, however, is that he was advocating much the same idea just two weeks ago.

On September 24th, at the height of the financial crisis, Sen. Obama said that the very mortgage bailout plan McCain embraced at the debate last night was worthy of consideration.

We should consider giving the government the authority to purchase mortgages directly instead of simply purchasing mortgage-backed securities.

[I would] encourage Treasury to study the option of buying individual mortgages like we did successfully in the 1930s.”
On home mortgages, Obama was for buying them before he was against it.

My God you are dense. Nothing in Obama’s letter describes what his version of ethics is nor does it honestly permit the discussion of any of those issues.
“Committee consideration of these matters through the normal course will ensure that these issues are discussed in a public forum and that those within Congress, as well as those on the outside, can express their views, ensuring a thorough review of this matter.”
This means, you ignorant doof, that ethics decisions which might be view negatively by the Republicans, say something like a Congressman being influenced by his lover who directly benefitted financially from their tryst, will suddenly become issues of sexual choice rather than conspiracy to commit fraud.
Fox in charge of the henhouse doesn’t cover it. Expect the newly ousted Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick to be pardoned and appointed Attorney General. There’s ethics for you.
Toss in pardons for Dorhn and Ayers for anything they ever did, a couple more for anyone rounded up in Chicago by Fitzpatrick, anybody whoever stole from a mortgage deal, and placing ACORN in charge of all the kids he’ll take from their parents because they couldn’t afford health care.
Smoke and Mirrors don’t work on everyone, asshole.

OK – so there’s this letter from Obama (I honestly had not seen it before, to tell you the truth), but I don’t see how it is all that relevant to Obama’s PRIVATE assurances on which he reneged. And for which he later took credit, I might add. Even though he did NOTHING.

So, yes – context is important. As Hank pointed out, this was to be a BIpartisan effort, and one on which Obama said he would work. And didn’t. And wants credit for anyway. Like just abt everything else he does (not do – like come up with his own policy statements, or being on the Banking Committee, etc., etc., etc.).

Was watching the Tee-vee last night and on CBS, they detailed the proposed plans by both candidates. Both would add to the deficit and Obama’s was far, far more.

Obama has never really been a leader. He’s never shown up and never done a real job in his life (‘cept when he was a community organizer with ACORN lo those many years ago). He clearly couldn’t balance a budget if he had to. He couldn’t even buy his own house without his crooked buddy Rezko engineering it for him. He would have never been on those boards, controlling all that giveaway dough without his buddy Ayers putting him in the right place. Nice how the Freddy/Fanny people gave him all those contributions for him to turn a blind eye to their crooked crap and nice how he used one of their execs to help him find just the right VP.

So, undecidedvoter, don’t shovel your crap our way. You weren’t the least bit undecided as clearly indicated by your snide little parting shot. At least McCain has enough money that he doesn’t have to steal and hang with crooks and terrorists in order to make his fortune, like your boy Obama does.

McCain voted for FISA on the cloture vote (where neither Clinton nor BHO voted) and was instrumental in supporting its telecom immunity clause. McCain did not vote on the final FISA vote, BHO voted for, Clinton voted against.

Did YOU read the bill and the proposed amendments?

McCain took OBJECTION to the added amendment that:

    1) eliminating “pay to play” schemes, and

    2) imposing more restrictive rules on meals, gifts, and travel that Members and their staff can receive from special interests that advocate before Congress.

Why does McCain have a problem with that?

” People on your side are just too damn dumb to understand what history has to say about it.”

    just more insults. thanks.

The reason that the markets are crashing is that socialist/economist groups are meeting all over the place in Washington and everywhere and are mostly saying that they are planning to do it all over again. People are saying that the government is going to give borrowers a break but then borrowers themselves will not be qualified by being able to prove ability to pay. Again. I mean people are saying that the CRA rules need to remain intact. That poor people need to be given loans.

Then Obama yesterday said that health care in America is a right.

So now anyone with any common sense can see that American have two new Constitutional rights coming up. One the right to be treated for their illnesses regardless of their ability to pay and the right to buy a home regardless of their ability to pay.

    Hank4818,
Sen Obama’s comments in the letter (IF it is an authentic letter cant say either way)

    Excerpt:

“I know you have expressed an interest in creating a task force to further study and discuss these matters, but I and others in the Democratic Caucus believe the more effective and timely course is to allow the committees of jurisdiction to roll up their sleeves and get to work on writing ethics and lobbying reform legislation that a majority of the Senate can support.

Committee consideration of these matters through the normal course will ensure that these issues are discussed in a public forum and that those within Congress, as well as those on the outside, can express their views, ensuring a thorough review of this matter.”

This comment reminds me of the cspan coverage of the Fannie Mae Freddie Mac fiasco where legislators tried to promote more oversight and The Dems were STRONGLY against it. we saw how that turned out.

    http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=themouthpeace&feature=iv&annotation_id=event_525530

Sen Obama’s letter (if it is authentic) indicates:

“As you know, Senator Harry Reid and others in the Democratic Caucus have taken an important step by introducing S. This bill, which now has the support of 40 members of the Democratic Caucus, represents a significant step in addressing many of the worst aspects of corruption that have come to light as a result of the Justice Department investigation of Jack Abramoff.”

Gee…in light of all the bundling and $ 200 Plus million in unaccounted foreign contributions (from foreign lobbyists perhaps?) Sen Obama has received…I understand how Sen Obama may have been paving the way back in 2006 so he could benefit WHEN..not if…but WHEN he was going to run for pres in 2008.

See how Sen Obama receives lobbyists” money- he hides it well.

    http://www.cjr.org/campaign_desk/obamas_lobbyist_line.php

“A “more complicated truth” on campaign contributions” , by Trudy Lieberman 2/15/08 , Columbia Journalism Review. Article describes how Sen Obama was able to receive “cloaked” lobbyist money. The lobbyists contributed to funds being collected by their industry or company “so $ was lumped together under a different category-. This is why people need to ask the tough questions. Check out the author”s credentials.

I understand how Sen Obama and the Dems would not want Sen McCain to interfer with any bipartisan oversight into lobbyists contribution reforms.

With such lax vetting of foreign contributions, the Obama campaign may have indirectly contributed to questionable fundraising by foreigners.

Biden and Obama are saying in their speeches that progress is measured by the ability of people to enter and acquire middle class status. That they will do whatever needs to be done so their listeners become middle class earners. It almost also sound like it is a right for Americans to be middle class earners. So Biden and Obama are advocating three new Constitutional rights.

    1. The right to be treated for illnesses.

    2. The right to purchase a home regardless of ability to pay.

    3. The right to have the ability to pay for a home.

Hugo Chavez, can you please come to America, with your Bolivarian aura and show Biden and Obama how to invoke a Constitutional Assembly and scrap our present Constitution and write a new one with these new American Constitutional rights.

Please provide alink to your source of information regarding what objections Sen McCain had to the bill.

was there anything else attached to that bill-perhaps some porkbarrel project ?

From what I have learned about how washington operates, legislators have some funny reasons sometimes for passing or rejecting a bill- and-quite often the reason they reach decision may have little to do with the purpose of the bill (the bill’s title)

If Obama gets electected(ACORN STEALS this thing)I will watch America’s collapse from afar and spend rest of my days surfing, smoking and sipping cold ones.

Here’s to hoping that will not be necessary just yet!

  • jbjd

    You don’t get it.

Republican Senator John McCain brought together both Republicans and Democrats, including freshman Senator Barack Obama, to review various reform proposals before the Senate, including S2180, introduced by Harry Reid and the Democratic Caucus; and explore best ways to consolidate their work to produce a comprehensive bill containing real ethics reform, with a goal to obtaining sponsors for the bill from both sides of the aisle. BO agreed to participate in this bipartisan effort and attended one meeting. Afterward, he informed Senator McCain that he had changed his mind. Now, he wanted McCain to agree to support – that is, vote for – S2180, the bill drafted by Harry Reid.

Having done no other work on bi-partisan ethics reform in the Senate except attending JMc’s meeting on the subject, BO could nonetheless now honestly claim he had worked on bipartisan legislation on ethics reform in the U.S. Senate. And John McCain knew this; and knew he’d been had.

Two years later, in response to a question at Saddleback, BO would indeed claim as evidence of his bi-partisanship, the fact he had worked with JMc on an ethics reform bill.

Once is sufficient for posting this letter, savage. Really.

The fact that Obama continues to call Senator McCain by his first name, like he did in the debates, is very telling. There is a certain decorum that is maintained by US Senators, which Obama is not maintaining. For a jr. senator to consistently address a senior senator by his first name when the senior senator consistently uses the more formal approach is a breach of that decorum. Obama seems to think he is above all of that.

You have made your point, savage. I think we all got it. Thanks.

Ethics Law Isn’t Without Its Loopholes

    By ROBERT PEAR

    Published: April 20, 2008

“The optimistically named Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 was supposed to prevent lobbyists from securing undue influence by taking members of Congress to intimate dinners at fancy restaurants.”

Perhaps only a few senators -including McCain- had the guts to oppose it because they saw that the bill had ‘no teeth’ ie it was so weak that loopholes around it had already been built into it.

Sen Obama has a record of supporting bills that are in effect ‘toothless tigers’. They give off the appearance of being something that they are not. That helps explain why people who should be opposing some of Obama’s bills are strongly supporting them instead. they know the ‘back door’ Obama has given them. They know there are loopholes so its in their benefit to support a weaker bill.

Ask yourself…WHY did those senators support the bill?

Learn more about Obama’s legislative record please. If you are going to tell me how someone voted- you had better be prepared to tell me why he/she voted that way. Its got to be in the records. Since you brought it up- you have to explain to me why Sen McCain AND why Sen Obama voted the way they did on this bill.

Look at Obama’s legislative record and you will understand what I am talking about…

I agree. This will be another one of Obama’s “they’re gonna tell ya’” speeches to try to deflect whatever is coming. I suspect a leak to Obama’s camp has caused this, allowing him a chance to respond beforehand, thus negating the impact.
whatever is coming should, (are you Republicans listening?) be released before the Obama speech. Even an hour or two earlier will probably work as long as it is BEFORE.

Two ideologies are facing off here. The other side thinks they are righting wrongs and doing for the little guy but the truth is that no little guy ever was happy under Marxism.

A factor of freedom is that some will take advantage of it to screw over others and get rich unfairly. What this new breed of Marxism is doing is essentially partnering up with the fat cats to devour that which exists between them. Us.
ACORN’s extortion of FannieFreddie exemplifies this.
Obama, no differently than any other lying despot, is saying the exact opposite of what he intends in the hope that cowards and fools will outnumber the sane and the wise.

This is one of the best written articles about Obama and his record of working across the isle during the primaries.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/29/AR2008022902784_pf.html

This is what I posted way back then…

    Mr. Ignatius,

I just read your article and it echoed some of my reasoning when I cast my votes for Hillary in the Texas primary and the caucus.

I think Obama has a bright future in politics, but I believe he is premature in running for president now. The points you made in your article are so compelling and if people are paying attention, they will see it for themselves. I hope that more thoughtful discussion of these concerns will continue in the press. They certainly are being discussed in my home and with my friends here in Texas. There are too many uncertainties about him to vote on his inspiring speeches.

I like Obama’s message and the interest and energy he has brought to the primaries. I wonder… if he lost his bid for the nomination, would he will be just as passionate supporting Hillary who is fighting for the same causes he says are his? How committed is he to the changes we need if he is not the man in charge? I think the nation needs more time finding out who this man is before they will elect him president. Some people say only he can beat McCain, but today, Obama does not have my vote in that contest for several reasons.

Hillary may not be perfect, but I know her and love her as a candidate warts and all. I know that she is committed to change. It is still a man’s world in too many ways, I believe that is one of the reasons she gets bad press, she is persistent in making her point and winning, she IS a fighter. Even today, many men ( and some women too) do not like that in a woman.

If the US really wants to be the standard bearer in the world for leadership in human rights and democratic principles, then what better message can we send the world that our citizens are committed to those ideals than to put a highly qualified woman in the White House? With support from brilliant people like Obama and his camp it can happen. What hope can that accomplishment send to women across the globe that are still oppressed and marginalized? That is a dream that I would vote for.

Anyway, thanks for a great article. I appreciate it when I see my thoughts and feelings expressed so well in the press. I hope you appreciate my feedback and a little extra information on what one Texas primary voter is thinking today.

At least McCain’s kids rallied around their dad in his illness.

Unlike Obama who didn’t visit his mother on her death bed but feels free to use her as an example of the evils of health insurance companies.

As a Harvard trained lawyer he could have scared the company into paying with 2 or 3 calls.

McCain doesn’t dare confront Obama in public on any of the trumped up “issues” McCain and Palin are playing, because McCain can’t control his temper. If he goes down that road face-to-face, Obama will respond with calm, calculated rebuttals, and McCain will blow a fuse on national television. That would be the end of any hope of a republican win next month.

All Obama would have to do to provoke an explosion would be to confront John McCain with the deplorable tone of the campaign he’s been running, and remind him that he said he was going to run an honorable campaign, focusing on the issues.

McCain’s temper is his Achilles’ heel. McCain knows it. Unfortunately for McCain, his opponents know it too.
