Former Member Advocates Reform of Acorn

I looked up the group’s Web site: “SpeakingTruth2Power.org.” It is decidedly progressive in its politics, but does call on Acorn to reform itself:

ACORN has led the fight for social justice in communities across America. Unfortunately, a few cynical executives at the top of ACORN have denied the same social justice to ACORN’s hardworking organizers. …

The reform movement is demanding an astonishing array of reforms from ACORN — from treating “Hispanic and African-American organizers with respect” (Acorn executives don’t currently treat minority employees respectfully) to forcing organizers to work “54-80 hours a week” to busting “union drives by ACORN organizers” and hiding its executives’ embezzlement, and more. The list is shocking:

  • ACORN management runs the organization’s agenda and members are told what to do — We demand that ACORN become a true member-run organization!
  • ACORN activists fight for Living Wages but management refuses to pay a Living Wage and forces organizers to work 54-80 hours a week — We demand a 40-hour work week and a Living Wage!
  • ACORN organizers are fighting for 7 days of mandatory paid sick leave for the rest of workers — but ACORN management only gives us 5 days!
  • ACORN’s membership is a beautiful rainbow of diversity, but ACORN management discriminates against minority Organizers – We demand management treat Hispanic and African-American organizers with respect!
  • ACORN management pays organizers less than a Living Wage while it hid $1 million embezzlement — We demand that ACORN management stops getting rich while we starve!
  • ACORN management says it supports unions but busts union drives by ACORN organizers — We demand the right to organize!

At No Quarter, we’ve published numerous stories on Acorn, including revelations that Barack Obama worked for Acorn in 1992 as part of “Project Vote,” that he served as their attorney, that he has funneled government and foundation monies to the group, and much more.

It’s clear that Barack Obama hasn’t the requisite experience to be president, having solely used his seat in the U.S. Senate as a launching pad for his presidential run.

It is also clear that Barack Obama needs to do the hard work of cleaning up the far-left organizations that he has blatantly exploited to win his runs for office, including this current race.

  • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

I worked for one of the state PIRGs right after college, and let me tell you, those community organizing jobs are real crappy. Low pay, bad working conditions, and there you are out canvassing for “the people.” They take advantage of college students and the young and idealistic. Hypocrites, that’s what they are. I didn’t even last there a month.

  • bemused

The IRS should definitely jump on them about the overtime. They can’t ask that many hours and they can’t in any justify not paying time and a half. All those ACORN workers have a year (? guessing, I admit I threw out the papers) to file a complaint with the Dept. of Labor for their back overtime. A bunch of those would be a big scandal, not to mention expense for ACORN.

  • IndyPUMA

I’ve been MIA for a bit. Had to take a break from politics as I was burning out. My g/f got me back into browsing this site, hcf, td and obamacrimes again.

As much as I love all of your work, I am very concerned.

ACORN, BC, FEC Violations, Whitey Tape etc etc etc. These are important issues, but nothing is being done about it. Sure, Berg has initiated a lawsuit, but not much else is being reported beyond our comfortable echo chambers.

I just don’t get it. There are people that have better reach to the highter echelons of our government, yet nothing is done.

You would think that matters of the constitution, lawas and rights of voters would be important enough that some RNC officials would hold a full court announcement wrt to these allegations and demand corrective action. But nothing is done.

The election is so close. The Berg lawsuit won’t be finalized before then. All of BO’s associations and his work with ACORN will be put aside. Nothing will be done.

All lil’ citizens have to sit back and take it in the *ss while some of the most basic rights, such as voting in a fair elections are spat upon. Still nothing is done.

It looks like Obama will be the next POTUS.

His campaign and the dems have set a very very dangerous precidence moving forward wrt elections.

I’m just so annoyed, anxious, defeated right now. Yes, change may come, but at what expense?

    What can us peons do?

Obama must be stopped and we can’t let Chicago politics infiltrate the all of government.

  • Zeke

I sincerely hope that Mr. Hall remains safe. The extreme measures ACORN operatives have already pulled and the amounts of money involved could make it dangerous for him.
The unfolding of ACORN’s crimes and the election itself are in a race. If ACORN falls first, I think Obama would face insurmountable accumulations of guilt by association. If the election comes first, the evidence will still come out but how will the government deal with the result?
Obama will still be shown to be involved in ACORN and its involvement in the Mortgage Crisis but if it comes after the election, things will get very interesting very fast…

  • Shiloh

With that kind of attitude you should have stayed gone. You are wrong all around. All the issues will come up and in the right time and in the right way. The Berg case will come to fruition before the election – the courts don’t dare risk looking political by pushing it back. Obama is not going to win.

  • Ali

This is so funny and sad. I’ve longed worked in education and the nonprofit sector. We were always talking a good talk about the rights and the work conditions of our students and clients – but we were treated like shit. And yes, I worked 60 – 70 hour work weeks, thus making my hourly wage barely above minimum wage. Gee, glad I got that master’s degree… Anyways, I’m glad progressives are speaking up about this!

    SusanUnPc,
    Thank goodness for ACORN whistleblowers.

Here is an interesting debate dealing with ACORN :

    http://www.democracynow.org/2008/10/15/acorn

Good look into some of the claims against ACORN & ACORN rebuttals.

McCain Campaign Accuses Community Organizing Mainstay ACORN of Fraud in Successful Mass Voter Registration Drive

    EXCERPT:
“With Election Day approaching, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), finds itself in the cross hairs. Over the past year and a half, ACORN has helped 1.3 million mostly young, mostly poor people register to vote. Then, last week, ACORN was thrust into the national spotlight when the McCain campaign accused it of engaging in fraudulent voter registration on a massive scale. We host a debate between ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis and Cleta Mitchell, a Republican attorney specializing in election law. “

Off Topic, I found this on Hillbuzz, and it ticked me off so I just copied and pasted it. This man is going to far. and i am sick and tired of him. He has taken away god knows how many peoples rights away through his voter frauding memo, and now he is telling the press what to say about John McCain before the debate. This is some crap. and have these people no shame. Sad pathetic, sorry excuses of journalists and commentators. Never has the first amendment been so totally wasted on a silly group of people.

The Obama campaign issues talking point to the media telling them what they want the media to say, leading up to the debate and then after the debate, as if the debate wasn’t going to occur at all.

These talking point are what Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Anderson Cooper, Campbell Brown, and others will be following, verbatim, tonight, tomorrow, and for the rest of the week.

Coming directly from the Obama campaign.

Here’s what Obama has instructed the media to say for him:

    Talking Points

    · This is John McCain’s last chance to turn this race around and somehow convince the American people that his erratic response to this economic crisis doesn’t disqualify him from being President.

    · Just this weekend the weekend, John McCain vowed to “whip Obama’s you-know-what” at the debate, and he’s indicated that he’ll be bringing up Bill Ayers to try to distract voters.

    · So we know that Senator McCain will come ready to attack Barack Obama and bring his dishonorable campaign tactics to the debate stage.

Obama continues to lead on the economic crisis with a rescue plan for Main Street.

    * Over the course of the campaign, Barack Obama has laid out a set of policies that will grow our middle class and strengthen our economy.

    * But he knows we face an immediate economic emergency that requires urgent action — on top of the plans he’s already laid out — to help workers and families and communities struggling right now.

    * That’s why Barack Obama is introducing a comprehensive four-part Rescue Plan for the Middle Class — to immediately to stabilize our financial system, provide relief to families and communities, and help struggling homeowners.

    * This is a plan that can and should be implemented immediately.

    * Obama has shown steady leadership during this crisis and offered concrete solutions to move the country forward and his Rescue Plan for the Middle Class builds on the plans to strengthen the economy and rebuild the middle class that he’s laid out over the course of this campaign.

    * Already in this campaign, he’s unveiled plans to give 95 percent of workers and their families a tax cut, eliminate income taxes for seniors making under $50,000, bring down the cost of health care for families and businesses; and create millions of new jobs by investing in the renewable energy sources.

    * John McCain has been erratic and unsteady since this crisis began — staggering from position to position and trying to change the subject away from the economy by launching false character attacks.

  • Shiloh

The polls are tightening. If they were unbiased, they would show McCain tied or slightly ahead right now. As the day grows near, voters begin more and more to think about character, who the person really is, and who they want in their living rooms the next four years. All not good for Obama. He is coming across more fake, more phony and packaged with his strings pulled behind the scenes, every day.

I think it is playing out according to plan. Obama can’t close the deal, his screeches of desperation and racism will grow louder. America has flirted with Obama but is about to break up and marry McCain.

    Keep the faith.
You can do a lot by forwarding some of these articles, You Tube videos etc… to your list including familym friends, neighbors, acquaintances.
Include a line or two as to why you will NOT be voting for Sen Obama for president.

Post comments on other blogs & try to back up your comments with links to sources so people can check facts out for themselves. Time is running out.

Regarding this effort to oppose Sen Obama’s election- IF…IF we have to go down-we will go down fighting to the end to expose the truth
And most importantly- to get OUT THE VOTES.

    P.S
I don’t plan on our losing this battle. Too much at stake.

Its a sad state of affairs. Is there any organisation that isnt partisan? The polarisation of american society seems to be complete. either you are left-wing or right-wing. all say that they want to improve american society as a whole, but they fully endorse their own wingnut propaganda. Its pathetic. no long-term vision at all.

To all Acorn that have gone astrayed with the Messiah. Do you feel cheated, overtime not given, abused? Well….children there is hope for you. Go to your state’s example: Floria Commission Department of Labor/Human Relations- the name is different in the other states and they will get your overtime-assign an attorney- get IRS involved and YES…you will end up with 25,000 dollars or more in your pocket. The only thing is that you will have to renounce Obama………yes…..inorder to get your lawsuit against Acorn….are you willing? If not…..continue to work for nothing!

    BREAKING!!!
OBAMA CAMPAIGN ISSUES TALKING POINTS TO MEDIA AHEAD OF DEBATE
    Wed Oct 15 2008 11:13:03 ET

The Obama campaign issued a set of debate ‘talking points’ to media on Wednesday morning, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.

Press Secretary Sean Smith issued the directive in an email from Pennsylvania, 12 hours before the debate.

The memo oddly mirrors much of the main press analysis and theme of the current campaign:

    http://www.drudgereport.com/flashotp.htm

  • standard

Democrats are so dumb that they can’t even remind the public
that Republicans wanted to put their social security in the stock market.

  • IndyPUMA

I do have a little faith, but i’ve been here and there in the trenches with you all from the beginning. From the Punjab comment last summer, to the bus loads of people coming into Iowa from Illinois to flood precincts during the primaries etc etc.

I’ve posted here and there, sent emails everywhere. Joined in the PUMA PAC actions and others, helped script videos….

But, man… if he get’s elected, then he assumes the rights of executive privelage. He gains so much intel and other items once he became the nominee, so BOs resources aren’t lacking either.

It surely is an uphill battle.

We need more lawsuits wrt to BO’s citizenship to pop up. Seems like folks in PA and WA are a bit more aware… it’s a shame that it would take a court.

FEC violations… why aren’t they acting in an expeditious manner. Why is the ACORN link to BO being ignored by the masses.

Sorry to sound defeated, but other than my short hiatus, it’s been a LONG Journey.

    I feel burned out.

But, we can only watch and see what happens.

Barack Obama has lots of dollars to waste to fool people to vote for him. It was reported this morning’s news the huge difference of money spent between Obama & McCain.Millions are spent by Obama to make him look qualified to be the POTUS, while McCain relies on the people’s wisdom to elect him, the most qualified to be the POTUS.
Can voters’ wisdom be “bought” by false TV ads authorized by Obama?
Not me ! I own my vote!
Not the ACORN volunteers/workers abused by their superiors. They own their votes! To attain your goals for reforms, vote

Checks and balances are important for any govt. IF obama becomes pres, and with pelosi and reid in his pocket, do you really understand what power he’ll have? and with his style of management? expect the polarisation to increase (repubs and dems), new racial tensions, an increasingly depressed economy, bowing to the economic might of russia, china. about the middle east and israel, the less said, the better. no, its too dangerous.

IndyPUMA: and what kind of change will it be when it comes? That’s the bit that alarms me.

Watched the FRONTLINE program last night on Obama/McCain. Obama hates the Clintons because when Obama tried to take Bobby Rush’s seat (longtime incumbent) Bill Clinton endorsed Rush and campaigned for him. So that’s the kind of guy Obama is. He tried to unseat an incumbent, the prez helped incumbent (totally expected) and now Obama hates Clinton because he lost one.

My b/f is one of those blue collar guys.

His thing was believing the propaganda coming from the union. This was becoming a real sticking point in our relationship, he seemed to want to bang the n0bama drum. Then I had the brainstorm to break it down for him in terms he would CONCRETELY apprehend.

This is the way I presented it:

“You know those transport aircraft you build at Boeing, you spend all day helping to make them safe to carry our troops over to Iraq? And some of those troops may not come home…Did you know n0bama gets campaign funding from the Middle East?”

He immediately started backtracking, saying he was never for n0bama. I think there’s a way to shine the light of truth for these people, unfortunately I can’t be there to talk to every single one of them.

The two of you may not want to hear this either, but those people you describe, if in fact they exist, are not undecided voters- they are Obama supporters. It is not a revelation to find out Obama supporters are willing to overlook anything-ANYthing to follow their Messiah.

    Duras,
You make some valid points and there is not a voter around who would argue with the unpopularity of Bush, but it may be a big mistake thinking that in a post 9/11 environment people simply don’t care about a candidate who has not proven his allegiance to this country by a long shot.

People are not as dumb as you assume. Congress has a 9% approval rating. If, in fact, people were unaware that the Congress is separate from Bush and is controlled by the alternate party, they would have the SAME approval rating.
Therefore you must assume that people being polled have LESS approval for the Dems in Congress than they do the Republican Bush.
Get over ‘the economy is the ONLY issue so punish Republicans’ Barry talking point.
People can consider more than one issue at a time.

  • Pyromancer76

All of us Americans know IT’S NOT OVER BY A LONG SHOT. (How’s that for Palin-ese.) If the financial crisis is blamed only on the Republicans, then Obama would be so far ahead Mccain would be seeing only dust. The few truthful polls, with a reasonable balance between Dems, Repubs, and Indies, have the outcome of the election, if it were held today, VERY CLOSE.

Furthermore, just the desire to see the end of eight years of a Republican presidency and the hope that Democrats could begin to restore some of the successes of President Clinton also should bring about a huge majority for Obama. But guess what, you trolls and the faint-hearted, it ain’t happnin’. The only politicians with a lower rating than Bush are our present Democratic-majority-pathetic-ones in the House and Senate. Pelosie and Reid alone are enough to lose Obama 20 points. As long as fraudulent registrations can be sorted out, Obama will lose by something close to a landslide.

Obama is unqualified and untested in any theater except community organizing and non-profit gifting according to communist principles (Alinsky/Ayers/Black Liberationists). He has abrogated the Logan Act in Iraq and Kenya at the very least; he has hidden most of the records of his life; he has absolutely no qualifications to be Commander In Chief; and he has lied umpteen times since at least January. With this amazing negative record, does anyone in their right mind believe that the majority of Americans — when they are standing by themselves in the voting booth — will make any mark except for McCain-Palin. Never, never, never. Yes, we still have to work our hearts out; nevertheless Obama loses.

And by the way, see the article about Iranian attempts to corner the market on natural gas, OPEC-like — I think in IBD Editorials. Sarah Palin has made certain that the U.S. is fully protected from enemies like Iran. Americans know where to place their hope.

But those two cases have not completed the process. That’s the problem with focus groups also. All in all the science or psychology of focus groups is not longer scientific any more. Yes, society maintains all of these instruments alive and well because too much economic interest, specially academic interests rest on them. But social interactions in 2008 with the internet as fast as it is has broken the reliability and validity of these instruments. They don’t measure what they think they are measuring. For example.

Today the stock market dropped 750 points. Those two cases would not mean anything anymore. The data is old, too old, is simply archival notes.

  • Newly Independent

Yes, the spot worked. Yes, they believed the charges against Obama. Yes, they actually think he’s too liberal, consorts with bad people and WON’T BE A GOOD PRESIDENT…but they STILL don’t give a f***. They said right out, “He won’t do anything better than McCain” but they’re STILL voting for Obama.</blockquote>

    I don’t trust that letter.

Some of the highlighted bold remarks above looks strangely similar to a post that I saw here at NQ the other day. The poster stated that he/she spoke with his/her AA friends about Obama the other day& that they basically said the same thing above.

This “letter” looks like a patchwork of NQ posts bundled with pro-Obama MSM “talking points” (ie: “The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000″ and “54 year-old white male, voted Kerry ‘04, Bush ‘00, Dole ‘96, hunter, NASCAR fan…hard for Obama”)

This “email” looks suspect. If is is a fake, then I don’t know what the writer hopes to accomplish by circulating it. It certainly won’t keep Republicans, Independents & Democrats from voting for McCain en masse on Election Day. If this email is legitimate, the same applies. It won’t change anything.

Someone should make a You tube video of this ‘taling points’ memo and write articles about this.

    This is DISGUSTING.

Talking Point memo for a presidential debate?

Is our msm so dumbed down that they need this for a debate coverage?

I CHALLENGE, I DARE, the msm to broadcast or write articles about tonight’s debate- W I T H O U T- using the same language that the Obama campaign memo counts.

I hope someone analyzes transcripts and compares word for word- how many articles, broadcasts will contain the exact same language as the Obama memo.

And then…do a YOU TUBE video showing how dumbed down and lazy and in the tank our msm has been during this campaign.

Another good article about how the face of America will completely revamp with an Obama presidency.

As with much of what Obama utters, the details , the nuance and often chunks of information are obliterated.

“Change” is a word much like “space”. It does not connote parameters involving volume, speed, direction, impact , timing and most importantly those with whom it will be associated with. Either those that will generate it nor those that will receive it.

Clever, but Americans ultimately will be neither fooled nor coerced.

    From 2004:

The Real ACORN: Anti-Employee, Anti-Union, Big Business

Despite its ardent public support of higher wages and union membership for all workers, ACORN has made repeated attempts to block the unionization of its own workforce while paying below-minimum-wage salaries to its employees. In addition to the extensive union-busting detailed by the NLRB (see Appendix A), ACORN unsuccessfully sued the state of California to be exempted from the minimum wage. In its appeal of that suit, ACORN argued that the reduction in the number of employees resulting from the minimum wage would violate its First Amendment rights. ACORN’s claims were labeled “absurd” by the presiding judge.

ACORN’s argument was deemed “absurd” by the judge. Sounds like they hired Obama as their lawyer again.
