My Questions for Obama and McCain

I have a few questions for our presidential candidates. Although I don’t really expect thorough answers, I’d like to put both men on notice that this continuing junk about pigs, pseudo-racism, and hope/changeism is a waste of time we can ill afford.

What would I to scream to our Presidential candidates if I had the chance?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(squiggles meant to convey that I’m now in dreamland)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here’s my first question:

How will you move US energy policy to adapt to a world where oil is scarcer and the competition for it fiercer? In other words, how will you deal with the probability of “peak oil?”

Our entire infrastructure is built around oil – interstate highway system, trucking goods across the country, suburbs, exurbs, NIMBY protests to creating local plants, geopolitical positioning of US troops and huge outlays of money borrowed from other places to pay for it all. If worldwide production of oil has peaked or will soon, then the US can either fight for access or adapt. Quite frankly, I’d rather adapt because adapting involves innovation, and the US badly needs to make stuff again.

Read the rest ->
Which brings me to question #2:

What will you do to move the US back into position as a country that makes things or, at least, is more self-sufficient than we are now?

Nothing against imports, but I don’t think the US should be completely dependent on imports for our everyday needs. Anyone tried buying shoes made in the US or toys lately? Harder than you might expect. Sure, you can find some US made shoes and toys, but they’ll be at the higher end of the price range.

During the last few years, most of the money the US generates has come from financial instruments. Not goods. We make more money from shuffling paper around than making things. Sounds good if the money is sloshing around, but the recent mortgage meltdown shows how dangerous it can be to rely on what is, essentially, buying and selling IOUs. And if our economy tanks, who will buy that paper anyway? It’s like a giant Ponzi scheme. As long as new money comes in, then people higher up can bank it. But you have to keep hustling new money. And Ponzi schemes inevitably end badly, with people on the bottom getting screwed and people on the top walking off with lots of cash.

I’d rather see us make things, innovate and make a “made in the US” label proof positive of quality. Yeah, hokey. But how can we survive if we don’t actually make things anymore? We can’t all be hedge fund executives or marketing analysts or distribution specialists or day-traders. What we really need right now are people to develop the next generation energy source, overhaul our physical infrastructure and make low to moderate cost shoes, clothes toys and other basic stuff of life.

Number 3:

Our politics stink and we’ve got a nepotism problem. We’re verging on becoming a DINO (democracy in name only), where only the connected gain power and power is the raison d’etre for both parties – not some long lost “values.” Anyone noticed that there are lots of second or even third generation families taking up seats in Congress? Is that bad? Not necessarily. But I don’t think it’s healthy either. Entrenched political families create and maintain ties to all sorts of groups over long periods of time. While voters may think sending the “grandson of so-and-so” to the Senate or House shortcuts the process of a politician finding his feet, it is a double-edged sword. The person who already has ties to Washington often does not have quite so firm a connection to the “home folks,” creating competing loyalties or interests. Why, for example, would it be a good thing to see a fourth generation Bush in Washington? Or, why would it be a good thing to see fourth generation Kennedy for that matter?

You know, I don’t like seeing movies with the children of stars either. Given that acting is remarkably lucrative after a point, why are the children of established stars given a boost over those trying to break in the industry? Yeah, I know – marketing. But I think it’s a cheat. You cannot convince me all those offspring are deserving, whether in politics or Hollywood. It’s often just nepotism.

Neoptism is a very bad way to allocate prestigious positions, lucrative jobs or prized spots in ivy league schools. It’s just another way to tip the scales in favor of the favored and waste potential talent. And our political parties now are simply the structures used to hand out the spoils.

With a country of 300 million people, just another political dynasty representative is the best we can do? And now that we have well-connected representatives – what do we get? Remember when Republicans wanted smaller government and lower taxes? Remember when Democrats stood for blue collar citizens who simply wanted a fair shake from the system? Republicans have given us a hugely bloated government now with inequitable income distribution and Democrats now think “blue collar” means “low information” racists. Yeah! What a pack of losers, except that their dysfunction shows “party values” are meaningless. Anyone voting strictly by party is a sucker. Haven’t you noticed how many representatives and senators become at least millionaires during their terms in office? Why is that?

Speaking of wasted talent – number 4:

What would you do if I told you that the US wastes around 31% of its human capital? Surprised? Well, women make up approximately 51% of the population but only show up in 20% or so of high paying jobs. That’s probably optimistic too. While more women than men are graduating from universities and post-graduate schools, they still are typically underemployed and/or underpaid. That’s a stupid waste of a resource.

And lest we skirmish in the never-ending mommy wars, here is an interesting anecdote. The women most likely to stay at home with children these days are middle class women. Why? Well, the women I talk with tell me it’s an economic decision as well as a family one. Quite frankly, middle class women – particularly professional women – don’t often make enough money to cover daycare, deal with daycare pickup / dropoff requirements (many charge by the minute if you are late picking up a child. Understandable. But try explaining THAT to an employer who wants you to stay for a late meeting) and school schedules that seem to have more and more teacher work days every year.

Women making more money may feel, probably correctly, that if they jump off the work track they will lose time, money and position, so they may stay at work. Poorer women simply don’t often have a choice and must work. Heaven knows how they patch together daycare and pay for it.

So, middle class women opt to stay at home partially because the pay just isn’t good enough to justify all the trouble to work. Yeah, nice problem to have, except that group includes teachers, nurses, non-profit managers, just to name a few. These aren’t typically your “rich people” jobs. Most women I talk with don’t want more money to stay in the work force. They want some job flexibility in how they work so that they don’t have to lose nearly all they make to childcare. Part time, flex time, job sharing – women pine for choices that allow them to be economically productive and still care for their families. Current US norms simply waste all that talent. Stupid.

Here’s the kicker though. Dealing with any of these questions requires leadership. A President needs to say “Moving the US from dependence on oil will be my priority for the next four years and I’m starting tomorrow with a “Manhattan project for energy.” Or some such.

Or how about “I will speak to the American people about what industries we have and what we need to re-create in an address to the nation on March 1 2009.”

Or how about “From now on, all candidates for national office will be required to present to would-be constituents basic financial, familial and all previous experience. While in office, all office-holders shall maintain appointment logs, votes cast and all press releases as well as donations and events attended in an easily accessible format that constituents can regularly check. And donations to campaigns must not only include money, but any connections the donor has to the candidate. Yeah, that’ll happen.

There are other issues; these are just the ones I’m thinking of today. My thoughts here are no doubt naive, need refinement and may not ever be possible. But I’m tired of the status quo and eating what I’ve been fed. While our loser Congress plays “who’s worse” about our economic problems, the dollar sinks against nearly every other currency and soon won’t be the currency of choice in oil trades or investments. We’ll owe more than we can ever repay and will repay what we can with wildly inflated dollars, ticking off our creditors even more.

While our political parties waste valuable female talent and rely on so-and-so’s grandson’s friend’s brother for the next open Congressional seat, our country doesn’t make full use of the bulk of its professional graduates. How stupid is that when we need more innovation and creativity than ever?

And we’ll end up needing $22.50 for a tube of toothpaste. Or it will be only $.49, but no one will have a job.

But hey, let’s just wear “Sarah Palin is a c–t” shirts and talk about her “trashy” daughter. Let’s “hope” for “change” or talk about pigs with lipstick. Let’s point fingers at each other and call each other racist because you’re black and vote for Obama or white and vote for McCain. It’s not as if we’ll sink together, after all.

And yeah, I do think one candidate is more qualified to serve, but I wish both would at least address these questions. It might make me feel less fatalistic. It might also help us find our way. But that’s just me.

    A GAME CHANGER, VIDEO>>> MUST WATCH >>>>>

    An important video to watch!

    http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/5411

    Barack Obama & Raila Odinga

The Video that could cost Obama the election

    • Shiloh

Agreed, this is a very powerful video. Not for us but we need to get it distributed to swing voters and soft Obama voters.

    • Elle

What an outrage and undeniable by BO as captured on this video.
Not one more..he was just someone in my neighborhood. The picture of Obamas support of Odinga coupled with the fact that our tax money was used by Bo to help his campain that took with it such violence.
This video should be his downfall. It must be spread and made public everywhere.

  • SJ

Obama where is your birth certificate, look here is mine I will tender it for public viewing in order to wash away all doubts as to who is legible or not to run for President.

This is what McCain should do right out of the box, shock treatment 101, that would quiet Obama for the dam night

  • Tversky

I’ve got a much more shallow comment/question for Obama:

“Why do you keep claiming you’ll give 95% of Americans a tax cut? Be honest: You’re reinstating the welfare state. You’re no Bill Clinton. You’re another Jimmy Carter.”

If I were McCain I’d bring up the name Jimmy Carter over and over again to scare the daylights out of Reagan Democrats. The 1976 election was similar to this one in that Ford, like McCain, suffered because of the unpopularity of the sitting Republican president. Just like now, Americans wanted a “Change.” It didn’t matter to them that they barely knew Carter. It was enough that he wasn’t a Republican. McCain needs to remind voters how THAT little experiment worked out.

    • Ivory Bill Woodpecker

More precisely, Ford lost because of the Watergate scandal. If Obama wins, it will be because the rotten economy, the endless wars, and the other crimes and follies of the Busheviks functioned as the equivalent of the Watergate scandal. The majority, if Obama wins, will not have voted for Obama, or even against McCain, so much as against Dubya Bush and Darth Cheney.

If Obama wins, he won’t be able to fix the economy, and the real, unelected, government won’t let him end the wars even if he wants to do that. Hence, many of the swing voters who go with him this time will be disenchanted with him by the 2010 and 2012 elections, especially with the Oborg punks strutting around like little tin gods all the while.

      Backlash, anyone? :)

      • NoTrollZone

Even more specifically, I’d say Ford lost because he pardoned Nixon. That same Nixon that I would vote for before I would vote for Obama. I don’t even care that Nixon’s dead. I would still vote for him over Obama. I would vote for my chair over Obama. My sofa over Obama. My Wheaties over Obama.

  • Shiloh

Who does Obama think he is kidding with the tax talk? He wants to end the Bush tax cuts which will mean a huge tax increase for everyone. Then he talks about what happens “on top of that.” So he will cut your taxes a little, right after he raises them a hell of a lot.

    • Tversky

I definitely think McCain could take him down on taxes if he’d just do it. Obama acts confident but it’s clear to me he’s clueless on economics.

McCain should talk about how important it is to NOT increase the capital gains tax right now (which Obama proposes). Not just because we’re about to go into a recession, but because of the specific nature of the global financial meltdown. Then McCain should explain how his capital gains tax cut would HELP the economy.

The only thing that concerns me is that McCain (God love him) is almost as clueless about the economy as Obama. The difference is McCain has the wisdom to know his own faults and the humility to admit them. Not true for Obama.

      • lark

By now Obama is not clueless on anything.

        • NoTrollZone

surely there’s a typo in your statement. Allow me to fix it for you:

By now Obama is clueless on everything.

          - you’re welcome.

  • SJ

I will bet anything this debate is going to be a snoozer, boring and dull, McCain camp is already saying McCain does not want to go negative, no even with 527 ads, Palin they have her in a box so she is quiet, so McCain may as well roll over and give up.

Tomorrow the media will say Obama was President like, calm and cool, and Mc Cain was beaten down and defeated. Makes no sense talking about the economy because they will say McCain’s plan sucks, no sense going on the attack because they will say its too negative, so just give up what is the use, no matter what McCain says tonight the talking point are in Obama has won the debate.

    • David

the media is doing their best for their candidate, you saw it happen to Hillary and now McCain is in their sights. Disgraceful and disgusting. No matter what he says or does he gets blasted by the MSM……damned if you do damned if you dont.

McCain needs to talk about the economy, it is the only thing on peoples minds today. And how BO’s economic plans(redistribution) will hurt everyone.

Better hope the whitey tape turns up, and even that may not help now.

Wont stop me from voting McCain though, so I can laugh at the peeps who voted Obama as this country disintegrates.

      • Tversky

It is a total re-run of what happened to Hillary. Frankly, I can’t understand how any Hillary supporter could possibly believe what the MSM says about Palin and McCain without independently researching it themselves. I know a few that admit the MSM beat up on Hillary unfairly but for some reason they believe everything the MSM says about Palin and McCain. *sigh*
        It’s depressing.

    • Firefly

Doing what the 0bamamedia says you “should” and “shouldn’t” do is trying to appease your abuser – it won’t matter what he says or does, it’ll be “the wrong thing.” And, as a former prisoner of war, McCain should know that better than anyone.

McCain is a prisoner of institutional bias and the only thing he can do is come out with guns blazing. If he’s refusing to do that, then I’m completely freaking out.

Beating my head against the wall now…

    • lark

I mostly agree because I don’t think also that McCain can do what he needs to do. He needs to stop explaining his plan, 1. because he has explained it during his campaign stumps.

He needs to to three things.

One. He needs to begin by going to Joe the Plumber statements and mock and deride BO on ‘spread the wealth.’ That needs to be the first thing.

Then mock and deride Obama’s 15 tax cuts and 10 new government programs. Mock and deride his government directed health care plan. Mock and deride his big government agenda and implant firmly in peoples mind that BO will be raising taxes substantially in order to pay for Pelozi’s 300 billion proposed incentive package. That needs to be second.

Then mock and deride his judgment on Ayers, Wright, Odinga, Al Mansur, etc.

Then mock and deride his tax refunds by stating that it will act as a magnet to attract illegal aliens and that blacks, youth and women will loose jobs to an larger influx of illegal aliens.

Then he needs to explain why his health care credits work and how it will prevent illegal aliens from getting free medical care.

Then he needs to explain how his Pakistan policy is simply a disaster.

Finish with a patriotic call for fighting for America and to keep America the way we know it.

  • NCgirl

Excellent LisaB! I especially like question #2. When I was a child (I’m 49) it seemed that the U.S. made just about everything we needed. I only remember seeing “made in Taiwan” on some of the cheap stuff that you bought at the dime store. Now, we pretty much make nothng and buy everything from China. When you are dependent on anyone for anything they essentially own you. They call the shots. We need manufacturing to come back in a big way. The state I live in was at one time a big textile/clothing manufacturing state. Women held a lot of those jobs, too. Not anymore. America needs to be self-sufficient again, in all things.

  • Firefly

(I put this at the bottom of the last thread, but I think it belongs here)

What I’d like to hear McCain say tonight:

Senator 0bama thinks his CHARACTER is none of your business – this person who wants to be YOUR president. His JUDGMENT is none of your business either. Because when he’s asked about his CHARACTER or his JUDGMENT he calls it a DISTRACTION. In other words, it’s NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, America.

Senator 0bama, why haven’t you released your college records?

Why have you released only a small, abbreviated version of your medical records?

Senator 0bama, what are you hiding?

Do you know what the Constitution of the United States says? It says the president of the United States MUST BE a natural-born citizen. Yet (and this information has so far been carefully hidden from the American people) you have REFUSED to even produce a valid birth certificate! Most Americans don’t know this, but there is a lawsuit pending because you have refused to prove you were born here – you could have gotten rid of this lawsuit in one minute by simply showing your valid birth certificate. Yet you refuse. Americans have a right to know why you’re hiding it. Americans have a right to know – are you a natural-born citizen of the United States? Yes? Then prove it. WHERE IS YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE? What are you hiding? And what else are you hiding from the American people you think you should lead?

    • jbjd

But he cannot say this in this way. Rather, lead the conversation – if the moderators don’t – to the anger in the field. Then JMc can say, sure people are angry, they say things like (and then raise all the issues). He can remind everyone, he tried to assuage this anger at his rally; then he should turn attention to BO. ‘But you could help calm people down a lot just by releasing your birth certificate; or telling the truth about A.C.O.R.N. (and then hold up a picture of the two ads on BO’s web site; and run the video of that A.C.O.R.N. convention when he says they will help shape his administration, etc.).

      You get my point.

      • Firefly

Oh, I think he sure as hell CAN do it that way. This is the last dance, baby – do or die – put up or shut up – end of the line!

McCain comes out like that and maybe he can even shock barky enough to get thrown completely off his game – on his way to a meltdown.

    • Dawnelle

      Oooooooooo good one!!!

  • McTampaBayacuda

Obama…What gives you the “audacity” to take more than 50% in taxes from any American and redistribute it to another?

    • cynic

What gave the republicans the audacity to run up a 5 trillion dollar debt in my name over a mere 8 years?

I didn’t authorize that. They should be required by law to raise taxes when they want to spend more money. That way we would immediately know what they’re up to, and could raise hell when we aren’t willing to foot the bill for it.

      • Ferd McBerfle

So we should replace one spendthrift (Shrub) with another (Oblockhead)? That makes a whole lot of sense. Besides–this isn’t about Bush. Try to stay on topic.

        • Tversky

Exactly. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

It’s sad that some folks are so blindly partisan they can’t when their party has gone astray.

George Soro’s Democratic Party is not MY Democratic Party. It puts party before principle.

      • McHope

So how do you feel about the $300 billion more Pelosi wants right now?
        Thats Pelosi with a D.
And the $845 billion Obama wants to send to Africa?
That’s Barack Obama with a D (that stands for S).
You will get your wish for higher taxes without a doubt.

        Btw,
McCain has promised to put the budget online, to be transparent.Gov Palin has already done this.

Obama won’t even let you see his medical records.

        • McTampaBayacuda

Obots, give Obama a free pass McHope. Obama will bring a once great country to it’s knees.

If he wins it’s back to the Carter years we go!

  • Thinker

    Obama:

“Why do you think it’s okay for a future Commander-in-Chief of the United States military to become friends with an American terrorist?

Why would a US soldier respect you? You want them to protect American buildings from being bombed by foreigners, but give a free pass to Americans that bomb our buildings?”

    AYERS MATTERS!!

I’m so sick and tired of people saying they are “scared” of John McCain and Palin, but think Obama’s friendship with Ayers is no big deal.

How many Americans do you know that hangs around in the living room of terrorists?

    • McTampaBayacuda

Yes, Ayers matters and so does Rezko, Right, ACORN,Soros and all the other criminals Obama associates with!!!He is not presidential material.

  • Dr. Kate

    Excellent, Lisa B

For them both: I would also ask him directly:

What do you think “leadership in a time of crisis” means? Can you point to an experience and your response?

I have already voted McCain/Palin; this debate is not the end for McCain. You know, like HRC, he is fighting against all the odds-the media, the bots, the democratic congress…at least he has most of his party behind him, which obama does not.

I’d like to ask Obama what he thinks the root of the financial crisis is.

  • trails

    Lisa,

Thank you for your post. I’m a little down about our political environment (still for Mac, though) and the state of our nation, too. I think this election more than any other in my memory has been hateful, divisive, and depressing. Late drinking urbanites consider rural residents scum, and feel no shame in saying so out loud, even to the point of accusing dads of sleeping with their daughters. We’ve seen young men trashing women and the elderly for months — or worse.

I’m beginning to think there is no us in the United States of America anymore. We’re just a collection of haves and have nots, young and old, male and female, black and whites, who have no common ground between us. Alas, I fear the term, “My fellow Americans,” is without meaning today.

    • WasLNbutNoBamaBotsKeepStealingMyName

Yes, young men (and some young and no so young women!) are trashing women because we are only “good for one thing” and when we move beyond our reproductive years, we are not even good for that! What have we come to, our proud, great country…

      we are disgraced.

  • John Smith

You could ask Obama anything and he will just start talking about how he will cut 95% of peoples taxes and give everybody health care.

McCain mad a mistake saying “he will whip Oabama’s you know what” it puts him on the spot and no matter what happens the MSM will say that he did not deliver.

Related to Ray’s comment, I read earlier today that Hillary Clinton had also filed charges against those involved in the caucus fraud of the primaries.
My question is, if that were investigated and a ruling made in favor of Sen Clinton, how would that effect this race?

      • Firefly

I can’t remember where I read it, but I got the impression that Hillary provided the US Attorney (or whoever it was) with the evidence she had of caucus fraud – and that all of her documentation will be added to all the rest of the evidence they have for the larger prosecution of ACORN.

        I could be wrong, though…

    Question for Senator Obama:

“Many Democrats made an issue over Cindy McCain not releasing her tax returns, although legally she did not have to. The position of the Democrats was that if she did not release the records she was obviously hiding something. Eventually Mrs. McCain did release her tax returns. So Senator Obama, will you pledge here and now to release your school records from your time at Columbia University? Although legally you don’t have to, many Americans nevertheless believe you are hiding something.”

Wow, what a great debate question this would be!

  • Mercedes

What I would like to ask each of the candidates is: Do US/Great Britain possess advanced aerospace technology that explains the numerous sightings of huge, silent, triangle-shaped aerial objects reported from around the world?

The answer to that question just about has to be yes.

    Follow-up questions:

How was this technology developed and what is its technical basis?

What corporate/governmental entities control this technology?

What raw materials are required for this technology?

Where are those materials found worldwide?

Why can’t this technology be adapted to domestic/commercial use?

What is your position regarding space exploration and NASA?

These questions may seem off-the-wall. But Senator McCain, as far as I can tell, has been considered an ally, through the years, by persons looking for answers to these questions. But now those same persons seem to be echoing Obama’s “Change” mantra in a nice, neutral non-profit way.

It is quite possible that neither candidate knows the answer to these questions, but I would at least like to see the expressions on their faces and hear their stuttering, stammering replies. And, it is not as if these questions are unrelated to our current situation.

There is life beyond Wall Street.

    • anon

If the truthful answer wasn’t a yes, we’d be left with a serious question most of us aren’t ready to hear our leaders talk about.

    A Question for Obama:

Will you promise to not pardon Tony Rezko, nor commute his sentence?

  • McTampaBayacuda

Obama…What would you do first if the United States is attacked by terrorist?

  • Monet

    My questions:

For Senator Obama: If I don’t have $3k now to buy a basic health insurance policy for 2009, just where am I going to get the $3k to buy into your federal employee plans? If a person can find $2,500 in their budget, they can have health care right now. 47 million can’t. So how are you going to help them by offering one more plan they can’t afford?

For Senator Obama: What are you going to cut to bring down the deficit? I heard you say in the same breath that there are programs that aren’t working that need to be cut and programs that are working that are underfunded. So if we’re cutting programs and taking that funding the programs you like and believe are underfunded – just where are we saving any money to pay off our debts?

For Senator Obama: If you increase taxes on Exxon-Mobil, just who do you think is going to pay those taxes? The shareholders of Exxon-Mobil or the consumer at the gas pump?

For Senator McCain: You already have the conservative, religious base of the Republican party. They like Governor Palin, they’re willing to put up with you in hopes you don’t finish the term out or she runs in four years. So why do you insist on catering to them when asked about questions like abortion instead of going after the independent moderate vote that you don’t have???

For Senator McCain: Why didn’t you finish your statement on the t-shirts? Millions of Americans don’t know about those disgusting t-shirts. Now was the time to tell them about the crass, disrespectful youth who are backing Senator Obama.
